September in Amsterdam: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

Dennis Fischer Photography / Getty Images

September is a wonderful time to visit Amsterdam , as you will experience fairly mild weather along with the perks of the shoulder season. Crowds thin out, and airfare , hotels, and other travel costs are usually much lower in comparison with summer rates. Since the weather is generally favorable, albeit slightly rainy, there are many festivals and events held during September that showcase the local cultural scene, from theater to wine.

Amsterdam Weather in September

Fall weather, as a rule, is iffy in the Netherlands, and while there can be days or even weeks of pristine weather, there may also be endless spells of rain. September, however, tends to be one of the milder months, rolling off of the summer highs.

  • Average high: 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius)
  • Average low: 51 degrees Fahrenheit (10.5 degrees Celsius)

The average precipitation is usually around 2.9 inches (75 millimeters) over the course of the month, which is similar to other months in Amsterdam.

What to Pack

Amsterdam weather skews cooler in September, so layers are key. Bring a light jacket around with you during the day in case it gets cold, but wear something light and breezy underneath, in case it gets warm. You might want to wear a sweater underneath that light jacket at night when the temperatures drop. Pants or jeans are appropriate legwear, while you might want to wear tights with dresses. Skip the sandals and go for sneakers, flats, or boots on your feet. Rain is likely at some point during your trip, so it is wise to pack a raincoat or a small collapsible umbrella to keep on you as you tour the city.

September Events in Amsterdam

September is a prime month for festivals and events in Amsterdam.

  • Nederlands Theater Festival: As the annual cultural season draws to a close, the best Dutch theater performances of the season are reprised at this festival, making it easy for travelers to see some of the most popular shows.
  • Amsterdam Fringe Festival : Over several days, this less conservative cousin of the Nederlands Theater Festival presents numerous dance and theater performances with “no limits." It is the yearly event for Dutch independent theater and a must for travelers who love the obscure.
  • Draaiorgelfestival (Barrel Organ Festival): Love them or hate them, barrel organs or draaiorgels are a classic Dutch tradition, and Dam Square fills with musicians each year at this annual festival.
  • Open Monumentendag (Open Monument Day): Each year during the second weekend in September, visitors flock to gaze at over 4,000 Dutch monuments and buildings. The public is invited to explore their historic premises, free of charge, during the gathering.
  • Amsterdam City Swim: This charity event sees 2,500 swimmers brave the chilly waters of Amsterdam's canals each September, swimming a 1.2-mile course through the city center. Proceeds from the swimmers' fundraising efforts benefit ALS research.
  • Amsterdam Wine Festival: Held each spring and fall, the Amsterdam Wine Festival has tastings and pairings galore, plus non-wine-related activities like DJ nights and other concerts. For the fall edition, the festival celebrates the harvest season of wines from the northern hemisphere.

September Travel Tips

  • You won’t have the city to yourself in September, as the visiting crowds haven't disappeared entirely. You should still allow extra time for traveling and making reservations, and ordering tickets in advance will help you to avoid long lines, especially at top attractions like the Anne Frank House.
  • The weather will likely be more favorable in early September rather than in late September, but the crowds will also be larger in the first half of the month.
  • Expect larger crowds during Open Monument Day, Amsterdam City Swim, and Amsterdam Wine Festival—rates might go up at hotels, too, so be sure to book well in advance.
  • While Open Monument Day means you can see great sites for free, there will also be longer lines than usual.
  • Though October is typically peak fall foliage in Amsterdam, you might get lucky to see the golden leaves changing at the end of September. Amsterdam is quite a green city; you can peep the leaves along the canals as well as in the many city parks.

When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

Feb 28, 2024 • 4 min read

There's no bad time of the year to visit Amsterdam but the festive season has a wonderful atmosphere © Lorado / Getty Images

With cobblestone lanes wrapped around arched bridges and canals,  Amsterdam makes for a charming vacation at any time of year.

All the romantic scenery, coupled with mild weather, makes it hard to decide when you should go. Every travel season in Amsterdam has pros and cons, whether it's sniffing fields of fresh tulips or waiting in a queue to catch a glimpse of a Rembrandt. Here’s all the insider info you need to help you decide the best time to visit Amsterdam.

Amsterdam architecture with rows of tulips in the foreground

March to May is the best time to see the tulips

Tulips bloom in March and bring ecstatic vibes. Despite this, the weather can be unreliable – waterproof clothes are a must. The three-day techno and house festival DGTL takes place over Easter, christening the season for open-air dancing.

Longer days, higher temperatures, fewer crowds, and full blooms – April is an Amsterdammer’s favorite month for good reason. King’s Day , the biggest street party of the year, is an extravaganza of orange outfits, flea market shopping and beer. This is also prime time for visiting flower markets like the famous Bloemenmarkt , which explodes with fresh-cut stems and kaleidoscopic petals.

Terraces and cobblestone streets get busier in May. This month, you can enjoy mild weather and observe the last tulips bloom.

During National Mill Day in the second week of May, you can peek clamber around inside windmills and watermills (look for the ones with a blue pennant). Accommodation and flight prices start to creep up during April and May but still aren't at the peak summer level yet.

June to September is best for great weather and festivals

With warm weather, lots of daylight and amazing outdoor events, summer is one of the best times to visit Amsterdam. Open-air events are in full swing come June, such as the performing arts extravaganza at the Holland Festival and the calmer but no less beautiful  Open Garden Days .

Take advantage of the longest days of the year in July and swap packed museums for bike rides and sunset drinks on tiny canal-side terraces.

Open-air electronic music festivals are popular with the locals and draw international crowds, most notably the techno-heavy Awakenings Festival (in July) and the progressive- and percussive-minded Dekmantel (in early August in 2024).

This is the peak season for Amsterdam, so queues for attractions and prices for accommodation are at their highest.

Book seats at your must-eat restaurants at least two weeks before travel, and time slots at popular sights like the Anne Frank Huis and Van Gogh Museum at least six weeks prior.

Amsterdam’s temperatures are a bit milder than other European capitals in August, and the city experiences few summer closures in comparison. Pride Festival  also comes to the city in August, bringing a party atmosphere to the streets.

September is one of the best months to visit Amsterdam. Summer is essentially over, but the good weather tends to linger for a few weeks yet. There are many good festivals on the go, such as  Amsterdam International Fashion Week  and  Jordaan Festival , with the bonus of fewer crowds.

Packing tip: Pack layers of clothing – Dutch weather is notoriously fickle, and there can be chilly spells even in summer. A light jacket and small umbrella will mean you're prepared for the weather but won't stand out like a tourist.

October to February is best for budget travelers

Wallet-friendly accommodations make the low season a great time to travel. You won’t freeze thanks to mild temperatures – usually around 37°F (3°C) – although expect some gray and dreary conditions.

October in Amsterdam is a whole cozy mood. Warm, autumn colors erupt across the city’s parks and gardens. Low-season prices start to kick in, and queues begin to dwindle.

Shorter waits for restaurant tables and emptier museums make up for the lack of events – and sunlight – in November. In November's second half, the festive season begins with St. Nicholas’s arrival by boat ( Sinterklaas Intocht ).

December is a magical time in Amsterdam, even if snow is usually nonexistent or turns to slush shortly after arriving. Ice-skating rinks are popular hangouts, and the city goes a-twinkle with fairy lights in the run up to Christmas.

January might be cold and dark, but museum queues are sparse, and downtown areas actually have elbow room. On the third Saturday in January, the Dutch celebrate Tulpendag , a kickoff celebration preluding tulip season with thousands-strong tulip displays along the Dam.

Typically, February – right before tulip season – is the cheapest time of year to visit Amsterdam. With some luck, canals might freeze over and fill up with ice skaters – thinning out the already-low traffic in Amsterdam's incredible museums even more. After marveling at Dutch Golden Age paintings or bundling up for a canal cruise, bruin cafés (brown cafes) are the perfect way to warm up with hearty food and cozy candlelight. Amsterdam celebrates Chinese New Year (falling between January 21 and February 20) with a parade from the Kuan Yin Shrine Buddhist temple in Chinatown to Dam Square.

September in Amsterdam – Events, weather, and travel tips

visit amsterdam in september

September events in Amsterdam

Open Monumentendag (Open Monument Day)/Heritage Days – This national event takes place on the second weekend in September and provides citizens and visitors a chance to see inside historic monuments and buildings to promote understanding of earlier generations. The movement was started in 1987 and now around 50 countries participate in their own versions. Many buildings in Amsterdam will participate, and the best way to get more information is get a free magazine from the VVV tourist office any time after mid August. Or you can see what’s up on the official Open Monumentendag site . The 2009 dates are September 12 and 13.

Jordaan Festival – The Jordaan neighborhood is probably the trendiest in Amsterdam as it’s gone from working-class slum to filled with art galleries and urban professionals in the past few decades. On the third weekend in September the neighborhood celebrates itself with a festival, and while it should be interesting to outsiders this is really more of a local and traditional party than like the frequent carnivals that are in Dam Square. The 2009 dates are September 18-20 and more information for Dutch speakers can be found on the official festival site .

September weather in Amsterdam

As mentioned, the weather in Amsterdam tends to be quite mild all summer, and by September it’s usually on the cool side. The highest temperature ever recorded in September is 83°F/28°C and the daily peak will almost always be fairly close to the 64°F/17°C
 average.

Avg. high 64°F/17°C
 Avg. low 51°F/10°C
 Avg. precipitation 3.2 inches/ 8 cm

You can expect fairly frequent drizzle, but rarely major rainstorms. You’ll get a lot of gray days with occasional sprinkles, so you’ll want a jacket with you, but it shouldn’t get cold enough for a heavy coat even by the end of the month.

Getting here

Prices for flights to Amsterdam generally go down by the second week in September, and often fare sales from North America begin for flights starting on the first, so especially if you avoid the first weekend in the month you should save some money compared to the insanity of summer fares. The same is true for flights from within Europe, although the difference might be less dramatic.

Where to stay

September is still considered high season in Amsterdam hotels , although many who book through computer reservation systems do lower their prices a bit this month as opposed to places that stay on a strict calendar. The hostels in Amsterdam tend to stay close to the same price all year, outside of the winter months anyway, so you won’t be getting a bargain this month, but it should be easier to book a bed at your first choice.

With that out of the way, let’s star exploring the top attractions in Amsterdam:

1. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not

Typical visit time: 1 – 1.5 hours Entrance fee: € 18.00

Ripleys

When I was first looking at the best things to do in Amsterdam in September, this popped into my search completely by chance. Then, when I saw the black hole simulation , I was completely stunned and SO excited! I never ever knew that such a thing even existed. And, as I am a bit of a nerd, it was really amazing for me that the black hole simulation was actually in a place I’d be going to pretty soon!

The best part is that no video or photo can ever recreate the sensation you get while you’re inside, it was honestly better than my wildest dreams. Before we entered the corridor, we saw people holding to the railing for their life, and we laughed. BUT THEN.

Once you enter this amazing Amsterdam sight, you will most certainly hold on to the railing too. It’s actually a super clever optical illusion, and while the walls are moving, after a few seconds you start feeling as if the walls are still but YOU are the one who’s moving . And THEN the fun begins! I actually went in and out a few times, since I enjoyed it immensely, but I did get a bit dizzy.

Things to do in Amsterdam in September

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not is definitely one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in September – Ripley was a travel junkie like me , and went around to world to collect the weirdest and most curious things around the world. A lot of these are replicas and statues, of course (you can see the tallest and the heaviest men in the world!), but you’ll still be saying “WOW” on every corner of this Amsterdam museum. AND they’ve made awesome selfie spot signs for photos!

Ripleys Things to do in Amsterdam in September

If you’re looking for accessible places to visit in the city, here’s an amazing guide to visiting Amsterdam for disabled travelers (and everyone else!).

2. Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam

Typical visit time: 1.5-2 hours Entrance fee: € 18.00

Van Gogh Museum

I am honestly having a hard time deciding whether this is my favorite thing to do in Amsterdam or not, as I am a huge fan of Van Gogh (but all the other sights and experiences in Amsterdam were just fantastic!).

For me, it was a dream coming true visiting the Van Gogh Museum! I haven’t majored in art history and in fact, don’t know much about art, but Van Gogh’s work has a very special place in my heart. I have first seen some of his work in person in the National Gallery in London, but I couldn’t even imagine a whole museum with his art.

The first time I actually learned a bit more about his life was in an episode of Doctor Who (have you seen it? If so, check out these 7 Nerdy Things To Do In London !). In fact, this is what actually got me so fascinated about his life and art – unlike other famous artists (like Rembrandt), he was not recognized at all during his lifetime and was struggling paying his bills. This is why his brother, Theo, helped him out almost constantly, and they often exchanged letters.

Van Gogh was struggling with mental illness, but this didn’t stop him from working on some of the most exhilarating paintings in the world. He recognized that he was ill and he even admitted himself into a mental institution for a while. But he never stopped painting and he never gave up on his dream! This is what I think inspires me the most – his tenacity and his love for nature’s beauty.

There was one amazing thing I learned while in the museum that almost brought me to tears (YES, get the audio guide , it’s fantastic!). Do you know his infamous Almond Blossom painting? He actually painted this as a present when his brother, Theo, became a father to a wonderful baby boy! Theo loved Van Gogh so much that he named his son after him – Vincent . And namely that Vincent was the one that created this very museum in Amsterdam!

Visiting the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – A Tip

The lines to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam are quite long, sometimes people wait in the lines for 4 hours! That’s absolutely insane. This is why I highly recommend getting a skip-the-line ticket beforehand and get an allocated hour for your visit. You will most likely still have to wait in a skip-the-line line , but don’t worry, it won’t be more than 15-20 minutes tops.

3. Heineken Experience in Amsterdam

Typical visit time: 2 hours Entrance fee: €18.00

Heineken Experience

The Heineken Experience is just as fun as it sounds! You might find yourself wondering before you visit – “So what is it? Is it a museum? Is it a roller coaster? Is it a factory?” Well, there is no right answer there, but I can assure you – hips might lie, but the lines in front of the Heineken Experience definitely don’t .

As the city is constantly flooded with tourists, you will really see that the best Amsterdam attractions all have huge lines in front of them. This is why I’ll reiterate again the importance of getting a skip-the-line ticket for the Heineken Experience as well!

If you are at least a bit curious about why the Heineken Experience is one of the best things to do in Amsterdam in September, check out my post about the Heineken experience and A’DAM Lookout and discover some great Amsterdam travel tips!

If you just love beer too much and would like to try as much Dutch beer as you can – there is an awesome Beer Tasting Trip !

4. A’DAM Lookout

Typical visit time: 1 hour Entrance Fee: starting from €12.50

Adam Lookout Things to do in Amsterdam in September

The A’DAM Lookout was not just one of the best things to do in Amsterdam for me – it was one of my favorite experiences in the city! I thoroughly enjoyed their attention to detail, which not that many attractions around the world can brag about.

There are a few things you will enjoy when visiting this sight, and it’s not just the view! Firstly, when you are invited in the building, you will have a mini photo-session which can make you look like a total daredevil! Next, when you step inside the elevator , it is absolutely like stepping into another world, it was SO amazing! The view from the top, of course, is absolutely stunning.

Last but not least, for the true daredevils, you can enjoy the highest Over-The-Edge swing in Europe! This is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience and one of the most thrilling things to do in Amsterdam in September and as a whole.

If you’d like to save over 40% of Amsterdam museum ticket fees, book this option .

5. Rijksmuseum

Typical visit time: 1.5-2 hours Entrance fee: €17.50

Rijksmuseum

Are you an art lover? If you’ve enjoyed the Van Gogh Museum, you must include the Rijksmuseum in your list with best things to do in Amsterdam in September!

I know it looks super hard to pronounce, which was the reason I kept calling it “The R museum” or something like that before we visited. BUT if you keep the “museum” part out of the word, the first “Rijks” is pronounced “Raiks” . See, simple 🙂

The museum holds numerous world-famous works of art, and the famous “The Night Watch” by Rembrandt! The famous painter’s use of light and shade creates an incredible depth of this painting. Moreover, seeing the huge canvas of “The Night Watch” is a very powerful experience which will leave you breathless.

P.S. Nope, Rembrandt did not paint John Snow here, nor the wights and white walkers 😀

The Rijksmuseum is pretty large, so you would certainly need a couple of hours to see everything. We mainly stuck to the paintings and the model ships , which were incredibly intricate and beautiful! This gorgeous building is not all about its outside looks, it definitely has a lot to offer inside, so don’t miss it when visiting the to best things to do in Amsterdam in September. Get your skip-the-line ticket here !

6. Vondelpark in Amsterdam in September

Vondelpark Things to do in Amsterdam in September

Amsterdam has a few parks, but Vondelpark is quite enjoyable on a sunny afternoon! Laying in the grass, taking a walk around the park or just enjoying the sun is what will make you fall in love with this thing to do in Amsterdam in September.

Vondelpark

Don’t miss the awesome hot dogs ! If you’d like to explore the whole park quickly and find all the hidden gems of Vondelpark, you can always rent a bike to help you out. Thus, you’ll truly feel like the Dutch! But be careful when walking around the park (and Amsterdam, for that matter), as the cyclists  can be quite dangerous for pedestrians 😀

7. Rembrandt House Museum

Typical visit time: 1 hour Entrance fee: €12.50

Rembrandt House Things to do in Amsterdam in September

Rembrandt’s main home is a great sight you can enjoy when spending 3 days in Amsterdam in September. A lot of the elements you’ll see in the house are actually authentic ones from the 17th century (so be careful and don’t touch anything you’re not allowed to!). Walking around Rembrandt’s house, you will experience a unique atmosphere that will convince you why this is one of the top things to do in Amsterdam.

Moreover, this is a place where many contemporary artists can showcase their work inspired by Rembrandt. One of the things that Rembrandt was most famous about was his use of light. His “special light” has become so iconic, that there is a very popular portrait lighting set up that is called “ Rembrandt lighting” ! He used to draw on a special time of the day and positioned all of his subjects at a specific angle to the daylight – 45 degrees to the side and 45 degrees up. This creates a distinct shadow cast by the nose, so the darker side of the face has only a triangle of light, called “ Rembrandt  triangle” 🙂

8. Anne Frank House

Typical visit time: 45 min – 1 hour Entrance fee: €12.50

This experience is completely different from all the other top things to do in Amsterdam in September. While the majority of the previous things I showed you were fun and cheerful (well, I guess apart from the Van Gogh museum), this is quite the opposite. For those of you that don’t know much about Anne Frank – she was a Jewish girl who was hiding from the Nazis during World War II. She, together with 7 other people, was hiding in that house for 2 years, until they were found and sent to Auschwitz.

Her diary is kept in the house (currently a facsimile as they are renovating the museum). The “Secret Annexe” as she called it became world-famous and it was published by the only survivor of the 8 people who were hiding in the house. Anne wanted to be a writer or a journalist and her writing style suggests that she could have been very successful at either.

While the Anne Frank House doesn’t offer guided tours included in the ticket, you can pick up an audio guide. However, bear in mind that visiting this museum can have an emotional impact on you and other people. This is why no photos are allowed inside the museum.

If you want to fully experience the museum, you can book a 2-hour private tour of the house (entrance included!) and the neighborhood when you follow this link .

9. Canal Cruise!

Typical visit time: 30 min – 45 min Entrance fee: from €12.50

Canal Cruise Things to do in Amsterdam in September

A canal cruise is an absolute must and it should be on in your list of best things to do in Amsterdam in September! If you’ve been there and you missed this experience, you should go back and fix this terrible error 😀 It is so much fun! A canal cruise is a great way to explore Amsterdam. A guide will tell you all about the major landmarks and important sights around the city canals, and if you’re very lucky, you’ll have a very funny guide as we did 😀

There is also a great option for an evening Amsterdam canal cruise , which will definitely put you in a romantic mood! Book your ticket here .

10. Museum of Prostitution in Amsterdam

Typical visit time: 30 min – 45 min Entrance fee: €14.50 (online)

Museum of Prostitution Things to do in Amsterdam in September

The Museum of Prostitution was quite interesting despite our low expectations about it. One of the best things about similar museums in Amsterdam is that they are open until pretty late (this particular one is open until 00:00 every day!). Thus, it certainly made my list of top things to do in Amsterdam in September. Inside the museum, you can step into the life of a prostitute. There is even a small cinema-like saloon where you can see a video of a typical tourist’s day in Amsterdam. The video was quite interesting, as it also showed something very common in Amsterdam – taking a bike out of the canal!

Yearly, between 6,000 and 10,000 bikes are taken out of canals. These are so many, that the locals joke that the Amsterdam canals are made up of 1 meter of mud, 1 meter of water and 1 meter of bikes 😀

Anyhow, there was also a short video about a typical day of a prostitute in the Red Lights District. It’s quite interesting to see how an absolutely normal-looking girl transforms itself into an unrecognizable and gorgeous preacher of love-making. If you get the audio guide in the Museum in Prostitution, you’ll find it quite funny – a working girl from the Red Lights District describes some of her experiences. Some stories are funny, but some are terrifying!

Inside the museum, you’ll also be able to see a typical room of a prostitute , and you can also stand on a chair overlooking the street and get a sense of the feeling inside the Red Lights’ windows . What amazed and surprised me was that the Museum of Prostitution in Amsterdam has a tribute to victims of sex trafficking , which is incredibly important in order to raise awareness. There is also a wall where you can share (or just read) some dirty little secrets ! It’s quite fun! So after I’ve given you a taste of Amsterdam’s nightlife and shown you why this is one of the top things to do in Amsterdam in September, let’s dig into the nightlife even more!

If you’d like to combine seeing the Museum of Prostitution and a canal cruise, book it here !

11. Nightlife

If you’re partying type, you can get an I Amsterdam card   that would give you discounts and free entrance not just to museums, but also to some of Amsterdam’s nightclubs! I would also recommend being on the lookout for night events and parties. There is  always something good going down in the city at night. Here are the top nightclubs I’d recommend:

This is an absolutely smashing club – it has very large halls and you can dance away your evening to the newest trendy techno music.

AIR Amsterdam

In the mood for Tiësto? This is absolutely the right spot! The club has a stunning LED wall, plays great house music and you can even be at a world-famous DJ event if you’re lucky!

This is one of the largest and most famous clubs in the city and definitely one of the very top things to do in Amsterdam in September! The music varies, but it’s mostly house and pop, which for me is the perfect mix for a nightlife experience.

X< I Amsterdam Sign – no longer there 🙁

Rijksmuseum

They say that you can’t go to Rome and not see the Pope . Well, in the past, you couldn’t go to Amsterdam and not see the “I Amsterdam” sign! It was usually super crowded around it, so it was hard taking a photo of you with the sign. However, one of my friends said that if you visited veeery early morning (meaning after a late night out), you could totally get a good shot. That is, if you’re sober enough of course 🙂

Please bear in mind that due to these crowds, the city council has decided to remove the I Amsterdam sign!

I got this beautiful shot at sunset after a rainy September morning . The reflections were just gorgeous! So if you’d like to take a great shot of Rijksmuseum behind it, take advantage of a sunny afternoon! If there was no rain in the morning, you can always bring a bottle of water and make your own photography pond 😀 Now, how’s that for an Amsterdam travel tip? 😀

Bonus: Zaanse Schans Half-Day Trip From Amsterdam

visit amsterdam in september

Zaanse Schans is an absolutely lovely little village that is very close to Amsterdam itself. Upon seeing photos of it online, I immediately knew that this was one of my top things to do in Amsterdam in September. It has everything you can ask for from a Dutch village – the traditional windmills, lovely wooden houses and the yummiest of cheeses! If you’re curious to see even more, see my input on why it’s so worth going from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans as a perfect day trip <3

I love Amsterdam and have been there for the second time last Summer, when we mostly focused on visiting other cities. But even so, a cruise on the canals is mandatory and also just wandering around on the streets can make a day perfect since I love LOVE their architecture! That’s a great list you came up with!

Ahh I absolutely agree! <3 We did wander for a bit, there are so many hidden gems to discover besides the obvious <3

' src=

So many awesome ideas here! We managed to hit most of the things on your list on our own trip, but I totally regret not having time to take a day trip outside of Amsterdam to see the windmills. Next time! 🙂

Sidenote: I completely agree with you about the hot dogs in Vondelpark! They are so good! Especially with the little crunchy fries on top of them. 🙂

Yummm, absolutely, the hot dogs are a must 😀 And there is always something we’ve missed, we didn’t manage to see the tulips, as we were there in the fall. But hey, all the more reason to go back hehe! Thank you so much, Sarah! <3

' src=

I think if I went on the Over The Edge Swing I would immediately have to go to the Heineken brewery to calm my nerves!

This is a great post and perfectly timed as we’re headed to Amsterdam later this summer

Amsterdam is so stunning, isn’t it? This is my home and my favorite place on Earth ♥ I walk everyday through these streets and I just can’t get tired of it. LOVE your photos, by the way! You had such beautiful days here. I haven’t been to the Prostitution Museum, though. But you just gave a very good idea 🙂

Aww!!! I think this is the ultimate dream – recognition from a local hehe 🙂 Thank you for your lovely comment, made my day!! I absolutely enjoyed Amsterdam and I am SURELY coming back, perhaps in the spring of 2019! There is so much more to explore <3

' src=

My husband takes a business trip to The Netherlands almost yearly, and I’ve been with him twice, so I’ve been lucky to see a few of these things while I was there! I also love the Van Gogh museum – it made me a Van Gogh fan! If you’re ever in Eindhoven, you’ll have to check out the Van Gogh bike path that is illuminated at night – it’s gorgeous!!! I’ve never been to Ripley’s because I know it’s in other cities and never felt the draw, but now that I know he was a traveler, maybe I’ll check it out sometime.

Ahh I didn’t know that about Eindhoven!! Will totally visit next time, thank you for the AWESOME tip, Hilary!! <3 And Ripley's in Amsterdam was pretty amazing, I think you will enjoy it indeed! 🙂

' src=

Haha, loved that you learned more about Van Gogh on Dr. Who (one of my favorite shows). And they say the telly is all trash! But I so want to see the Van Gogh museum so it’s nice to hear it was worth it and not a let down. And that black hole experience, I would have to try that as well. Guess I’m a bit of a nerd as well 🙂

Aww SO GLAD to meet a yellow Whovian!! <3 The Van Gogh museum was indeed worth it and one of the main reasons I decided to book my ticket there! 🙂

' src=

Man, I really want to visit Amsterdam. We landed once at the airport and changed planes, but I don’t think that really counts. LOL! Of course, reading the Diary of Anne Frank means that I would have to visit the Anne Frank house, but I have to admit the Prostitution Museum intrigued me.

Haha well next time you can just book a long layover and go explore the city 😛 The Prostitution Museum was indeed a hidden gem that I really enjoyed!

' src=

This is so useful! We are heading to Amsterdam at the end of the month and will only have one full day to explore, but we will definitely be checking out some of the places on this list 🙂

Ah, you can see a lot in 1 day too! There’s definitely a lot of places to choose, and those skip-the-line tickets will be immensely useful 🙂

' src=

Excellent timing – I’m visiting Amsterdam in the next few weeks! This has opened my eyes to a few places that I hadn’t considered; thank you for sharing!

Aww honey!! I’m so glad, you’ll love Amsterdam! <3

' src=

hahahha so they cooked you? 😀

Haha I was the dessert!! 😀

' src=

I really enjoyed Amsterdam when I visited and loved the Heineken Experience, which is interesting because I actually don’t like beer! We missed out on so much due to heavy snow but, when I go back, I’ll bookmark this post for a guide of what I need to do!

Keeley x http://www.phatcupcake.com

Hehe I did enjoy the Heineken Experience as well!! It’s definitely not just for beer lovers 🙂 And yes, you should absolutely revisit, there is so much to see <3 Thank you, Keeley!

' src=

Wonderful and detailed account! Will be so handy when I visit Amsterdam this fall!

Thank you so much!! We did visit in the fall too and it was absolutely lovely. Amsterdam is definitely not just a spring destination!

' src=

Thank you for sharing detailed information on Amsterdam as it is on my Bucket list, now it is very easy to plan the trip to Amsterdam.

Thank you so much!! I am so glad you’ve found my post useful, hope you make it to Amsterdam soon enough 🙂

' src=

Thanks for the tip about the hotdogs! My hotel is near the park and I think I’ve just figured out my lunch plans!!!

Ahh I am still drooling over them!!! We were also near the park, so yeah, the perfect lunch! :))

' src=

I am going to Amsterdam for one day and we are going to try to squeeze in the Anne Frank House, Heineken experience, and a canal cruise!

Ahh one day only 🙈 Try to book Heineken and Anne Frank in advance!! Lovely choices, otherwise! ☺️

Best Things to do in Amsterdam in September

Dreaming of a trip to Amsterdam later this year? We’re not surprised. If there’s one city that should be on your radar as soon as the world gets moving again, it’s the Dutch capital. September in Amsterdam is always buzzing with activities, festivals and an electric atmosphere. When planning your trip to experience Amsterdam’s canalside bars, crazy museums and coffeeshops, you’ll want to know what events are on while you’re there. Read on to find out the best events and things to do in Amsterdam in September 2020.

Looking for the best hostels in Amsterdam? Check out the Flying Pigs

Make the most of canalside bars

Septembers in Amsterdam are usually still lovely and warm from the summer, and what’s a warm sunny day without an al fresco drink? Amsterdam’s bar scene is pretty different from most other European cities - they’re all cool and quirky, but the best are the canalside bars that serve up local beers and good food. Roest, Hannekes Boom, Pllek and Waterkant are a few of the best that are always filled with young Dutch locals and expats drinking and soaking up the epic atmosphere.

Cycle to the windmills

You’re not planning to go to Amsterdam without hiring a bike, are you? If you do and you’re in the city for enough days, use one of those days to venture out of the city to see some of the world’s most famous windmills. They’re a pretty spectacular sight. Zaanse Schans are some of the most well-known near Amsterdam, with windmills you’ll be able to head inside and have a look around. It’s an hour bike ride, but time flies when the sun’s shining and you’re in Amsterdam.

Open Monuments Day

On the weekend of 12th and 13th September, a number of Amsterdam’s most historic monuments will be open for the public to visit for free for Heritage Day 2020. For the culture vultures and history buffs out there, this is the weekend you’ll want to visit. Thousands of monuments (we’re talking around 5,000 here) will be opened up to encourage locals and visitors to the city to delve deeper into the history of the Netherlands, and many of them will even host guided tours and on-site activities to draw you in. You’ll be able to see which monuments are taking part by the ‘Open Monumentendag’ flag flying outside.

Vondelpark Festival

Every summer from June through to September, Vondelpark’s Open Air Theatre puts on a packed-out programme of music, comedy, theatre, dance and cabaret performances. It’s not open for too long in September, so check out what’s on when you’re in Amsterdam. Wanna know the best part? All these open-air shows are put on for free. Just give a voluntary donation towards the production then sit back and enjoy.

Chill out in Vondelpark

Vondelpark is huge, and the Open Air Theatre only takes up a small portion of it meaning there’s plenty of room to pull up a blanket, lay back and soak up the atmosphere. On any slightly warm day, Vondelpark is the place to be with locals and expats hanging out with beers and playing games. If you feel like skipping out on museums for an afternoon, chilling out in Vondelpark is a big part of the Dutch way of life! So it technically still counts as taking in the culture anyway…

Make sure you check out the rules on barbecuing in Amsterdam’s parks before you light up or you could be landed with a hefty fine. There are a number of parks that do allow you to set up a barbecue as long as you follow the rules, however Vondelpark is not one of these. Some great parks where you are allowed are Westerpark, Eendrachtspark, Bretten and Oeverlanden just to name a few. So pop into your nearest Albert Heijn for burgers, buns and beer and soak up the last of the summer.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival

From 3rd until 13th September, Amsterdam Fringe Festival will be taking over more than 30 different venues across the city. Each artist has been selected for their unique creativity, as Fringe celebrates talented young artists who think outside the box. Around 50% of performances are suitable for non-Dutch speakers with English as well as ‘no language, no problem’ shows stated clearly on the website. Keep up to date via their website with which artists will be performing when and where.

Amsterdam City Swim

For the 8th year running, Amsterdam will see thousands of people dive into the city’s canals to swim the pretty intense 2,000 metre route to raise money for motor neurone disease. Even if you’re not taking part, if you’re in Amsterdam for this iconic event on Sunday 6th September then make time to check out the course and cheer the swimmers through the city centre soon after midday.

Unseen Art Fair and Photography Festival

Art and photography lovers from all over visit this exhibition every year to see the latest established and up-and-coming talent in the world of photography. In galleries across Amsterdam, work from 300 national and international photographers will be showcased from 18th until 20th September 2020. Expect a full line-up of lectures, exhibitions, events and of course the Book Market.

Visit the markets

Make the most of the days it’s not raining in Amsterdam and visit the city’s open air markets. There are some really great flea markets and food markets around the city. Albert Cuyp Market is the most famous over in De Pijp, where you can buy jewellery, clothes, fresh fruit and veg as well as pick up one of the best stroopwafels in Amsterdam. Noordermarkt is all about premium quality food, you’ll be able to pick up some great vintage bargains from Waterlooplein, and IJ Hallen Flea Market is set inside a converted shipping warehouse where you can get some awesome cheap second-hand clothes. Then there’s Bloemenmarkt - the world’s first and only ‘floating’ flower market.

Best Time to Visit Amsterdam: Month-by-Month Guide

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on May 29, 2024

Renowned for its countless canals , charming historic buildings and lively cultural scene, the Netherlands’ capital of Amsterdam is a very popular destination. While you can appreciate its architecture and ambience at any time, there are better months than others to visit weatherwise.

Spring through autumn is when most people visit as the city is warmer and the sun is out. Massive celebrations like King’s Day and Pride also attract huge numbers, as do its Christmas markets and Keukenhof’s colourful tulips.

Here we’ll break down month-by-month what to expect from Amsterdam in terms of climate, crowds and cultural events. This will give you a better idea of when to plan your trip to the ‘Venice of the North’.

What’s the Weather Like in Amsterdam?

Wet, grey and chilly for much of the year, Amsterdam has an oceanic climate that is heavily influenced by the nearby North Sea. While the summer months are the warmest, it is still worth layering up as the capital’s weather is notoriously unpredictable.

As it lies below sea level, rain, mist and fog often occur with the city’s numerous canals also creating a chill as the wind blows off their surface. Nighttime temperatures rarely fall below freezing though, even in wintertime, as it is surrounded by three large bodies of water.

Averages of 21°C (70°F) can be expected in summer with that dropping to around 5 or 6°C (41 to 44°F) in winter. As each month sees roughly 13 to 20 days with at least some rain, it’s a good idea to pack an umbrella whenever you visit!

Best months to visit Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Art, history and nightlife can be enjoyed at any time here and people head to Amsterdam year-round, regardless of the weather. The only quieter (and cheaper) months are January through March when the dreary days and colder temperatures put visitors off.

Spring sees numbers shoot up as the blooming flowers make both Keukenhof and its flower markets so colourful to explore. With exciting events like King’s Day and the Holland Festival being held, the scenic streets remain packed until summer – the city’s absolute peak season.

As there are slightly smaller crowds and temperatures are still mild, September and October are great times to visit. December also attracts tons of visitors, despite the cold, dark days, thanks to its magical Christmas markets and massive New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Amsterdam in January

Amsterdam Winter

After the Christmas and New Year’s festivities are over, most people stay away as the city is usually very cold, dreary and wet in January. The Amsterdam Light Festival does brighten up its short, dark days, as does National Tulip Day.

While prices are cheaper and there are no lines at the museums, the low temperatures make walking and biking less pleasant. As clear skies and sunshine only rarely appear, you’ll need to wrap up warmly. Snow sometimes falls but not regularly and doesn’t remain for long.

Amsterdam in February

Amsterdam Ice Skating

February is also the low season as temperatures stay at around 5°C (41°F) and there are no major events to entice visitors to town. There are a couple more hours of daylight, however, and much less rain falls. Hotel prices are cheaper so it can be a good time to pick up deals.

Besides celebrating Chinese New Year in its Chinatown area, you may be able to skate on its canals if they freeze over. Once a common occurrence, conditions are now only cold enough every few years.

Amsterdam in March

Amsterdam Museum

While March is only a few degrees warmer, tourists start to return once the world-renowned Keukenhof Gardens open again. Until the middle of the month though, prices remain low and the city is quieter.

Although there is a bit more sun and a couple more hours of daylight, you’ll need to pack an umbrella as it rains at least a bit for 18 days on average. Ambling about its pretty tulip fields in March is a treat as there are not yet too many people around. At the same time, its Tulip Festival means there are lots of lovely displays dotted all around town.

Amsterdam in April

Kings Day

As Keukenhof’s blooming flowers look even more beautiful in April, tourist numbers shoot up along with hotel prices. The colourful King’s Day celebrations – the country’s biggest party – also attract millions to the capital. Although everything is way more expensive around this time, the countless concerts and endless orange-coated crowds really are unforgettable!

Average temperatures of 12°C (53°F) coupled with 14 hours of daylight also mean you can stay outdoors for longer. Renting a bike is a good idea as both its cherry blossoms and the verdant greens of its surrounding countryside look magnificent. The weather is also drier so you shouldn’t get wet so often. Plenty of people also take cruises along its canals.

Amsterdam in May

Amsterdam Tulips

Just a week on from King’s Day is yet another big event in Amsterdam and the Netherlands: Liberation Day. The warmer, sunnier weather means numerous music concerts and festivals are held all around town. The city’s hotels and restaurants remain quite full with prices being higher as a result.

Up until the middle of the month, you can still visit Keukenhof to see the delightful tulips. Its relatively dry weather and average temperatures of 16°C (61°F) are also perfect for ambling about the center or biking and boating along its canals. Along with April, it is considered one of the best – but busiest – months to visit Amsterdam.

Amsterdam in June

Amsterdam Walking

The city’s packed schedule of events doesn’t let up in June as this is when the month-long Holland Festival takes place. Besides enjoying all the concerts, plays and dance performances, there are lots of other interesting events to catch in Vondelpark.

With so much going on, you can really fill up the long, sunny days with fun things to do. The capital has a lovely, lively feel yet isn’t as heaving as the months both before and after it. As temperatures average 19°C (66°F), many people picnic in the parks or visit the gorgeous gardens of canal houses during its Open Garden Days.

Amsterdam in July

Pride Festival

As people have summer holidays, the sun is shining and the weather is warmest, July is one of the most popular months to explore Amsterdam . Although there is slightly less daylight and sunshine than in June, averages of 21°C (70°F) are great for spending a lot of time outside.

Besides sunbathing in the parks and taking sightseeing cruises along the canals, visitors can party it up at the week-long Pride festival. Due to all the crowds, prices rise with long queues forming at all the main attractions and museums.

Amsterdam in August

Amsterdam Summer

August is peak season in Amsterdam when the restaurants and bars are packed and accommodation prices are at their highest. Countless huge events like Pride, De Parade and the Grachtenfestival draw even more people to the city. Due to this, you’ll have to book your hotels and tickets to the Anne Frank House in advance.

While it is one of the best months to visit weatherwise, the constant crowds in the streets, squares and tourist sights can get a bit tiring. In recent years, regular heat waves have also made walking more taxing as temperatures of over 30°C (86°F) are more common. It still rains around 14 days though on average!

Amsterdam in September

amsterdam terrace

Although the weather is a bit more unpredictable, September is still a popular month to visit Amsterdam. While it rains more, there is a decent amount of sunshine and daylight with temperatures remaining relatively warm at around 18°C (64°F).

Once kids head back to school, prices fall and there are fewer crowds at all its attractions. As such, this is the ideal time to visit the Alkmaar and Gouda cheese markets with fewer people around. You can also try out top dining establishments as part of National Restaurant Week or enjoy exciting performances at both its fun Jordaan and Fringe festivals.

Amsterdam in October

Amsterdam Autumn

Darker, wetter and colder, October is when autumn really sets in! While you’ll need to layer up and take an umbrella around, the glittering golden colors of its trees create some lovely photo opportunities alongside the canals. If you don’t mind averages of 14°C (57°F), cycling about its countryside can also be very nice due to all the attractive autumnal foliage.

As the skies are mostly grey though and there are fewer crowds, spending time indoors at cosy cafes or the many museums, is a great way to spend the day. Apart from the marathon, there is also the massive Amsterdam Dance Event to attend.

Amsterdam in November

Amsterdam Rain

With 20 days of rain on average and just a couple of hours of faint sun, November is one of the least popular months to visit Amsterdam. As the city is quite dark and dreary, wandering around is definitely a lot less pleasant. You’ll want to spend most of your time indoors and wrap up warm when outside.

Hotel prices are much cheaper, however, and there are no queues at its main attractions and museums. Sinterklaas does pay a visit to the city though and its Christmas lights create an even more magical atmosphere about its already scenic streets and canals.

Amsterdam in December

Amsterdam Christmas

December again sees crowds return to Amsterdam for its amazing Light Festival, Christmas markets and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Prices rise with all its hotels and restaurants filling up. The days are much shorter with around 8 hours of daylight as temperatures drop to just 6°C (43°F).

Despite this, there is a very festive feel about the city as locals decorate their front windows and lights brighten up all its squares. There are also ice skating rinks for you to shoot about and plenty of gluhwein and oliebollen to enjoy at the Christmas markets. Although it seldom falls, snow makes for a very memorable winter in Amsterdam.

  • When to Visit Amsterdam (and Which Dates to Avoid)

Just like many European capitals, Amsterdam has a bustling tourism industry. The city’s charming look, rich history, and unique “recreational” activities are a magnet for visitors everywhere.

Whether you’re planning to visit tulip season, or are just looking for the best deals, here are some tips on when to visit Amsterdam.

When to visit Amsterdam for the best weather and tourist activities

Northern Europe is known to be wet, grey and a bit chilly eight months out of the year. This includes Amsterdam, but our winds keep the weather interesting and unpredictable. Bottom line: Always come prepared with layers and a light rain jacket.

Tulip season runs from about mid March to early May , and marks the beginning of tourist season. April is an ideal time: flowers, medium tourist traffic, and a high chance of good weather. However, make sure to scoot out by Queen’s Day weekend if you want to avoid large crowds and a spike in hotel prices.

The weather during the summer is a mixed bag. Short spurts of heavy rain mix with heat, humidity and sunshine. Locals feel it’s their duty to enjoy as many outdoor days as possible, meaning the city is alive, outside. The parks, beaches, canals and cafes are brimming with relaxing Amsterdammers basking in the sun. It’s a great time for long bicycle rides along Holland’s green countryside, camping in the sand dunes, and the overall attitude in the Netherlands is very “vay-cay”.

But summer is peak tourist season in this tiny Dutch capital. By the end of May , be ready to wait in long lines for top attractions, shuffle about in a congested downtown, and pay too much for too little with accommodation. (Of course, we can still help you find a budget hotel , even during the summer!)

Still, if you’ve covered the basics in Amsterdam before, then summer could prove easy going.

Best season for low rates, more locals, and fewer tourists

Spring and summer might be delightful, but they're not easy on the wallet. True budget travelers know that the city is more easily afforded, and experienced more like a local, during the "off season."

My personal pick for an Amsterdam trip would be fall, from late September to late October . As the days grown shorter, autumn leaves drift silently, streets become peaceful, and even the canals calm down. Prices, tourism, and temps have dropped, and it’s the best time to experience cozy cafes, free museums, and small, local happenings.

It’s also the time of hearty local and seasonal cuisines like stamppot and pea soup. Bok bier , a seasonal autumn ale that local brewers pride themselves in creating, also hits the spot. Nightlife and entertainment is generally still alive, pulling in the local and international city dwellers instead of the tourists.

Airfares are at their absolute lowest in November and February , because the weather is dismal and dreary. Still, this city was built for making the most out of a crabby climate, and snowy nights blanket the city with an extra romantic charm. Temperatures stay bearable for outdoor strolls until around November, when the coldest months set in until late February .

But these are the cheapest times to hit Amsterdam. This includes sleeping, as the city's hotel rates drop noticeably during the winter.

If canals freeze over it will happen in early February , and locals will be gliding on ice skates all over the country. The sun is more frequent now, but a harsh cold still lives. (Pack sweaters.) Again, if you’re a returning visitor to Amsterdam, and like the indoors, winter could be your prime time.

Dates to avoid

If you'd rather avoid crowds and high prices on airfare and hotels, you're best off avoiding Amsterdam during a few key dates. Of course, these can be amazing experiences, as well. Just know that you won't be alone!

Queen’s Day and Liberation Day (late April-early May)

The last weekend of April to first weekend of May, and the dates in between, encompass the biggest party week in Amsterdam, celebrating her majesty on Queen’s Day, and the end of WWII on Liberation Day (not to mention a whole lot of soccer tournaments).

Festivals are inescapable, the city is covered with Dutch orange paraphernalia, and the streets are buzzing with activity. Locals seem to leave the hooplah for the 3 million+ who flock in from out of town. Prices soar. Still, it's a hands down fun time and memorable cultural experience!

During the month of August, Amsterdam is just too crammed with tourists and impossible to find deals. Guided tours fill the downtown with swells of crowds, and getting around comfortably is nearly impossible by foot, bike, and tram. You’ll spend ages waiting to see Anne Frank Huis and the Van Gogh museum , while all the good local bars and restaurants will be closed, as the Dutch take August off... all of it.

Unless you love dodging fireworks and paying up the wazoo for a night out, skip Amsterdam for New Years. It’s cold, it’s disorganized, and it’s full of people lighting off anything and everything that sparks and flies. Clubs double their prices, so why pay a lot for staying inside a venue that looks similar to all the others?

A big group of friends could do the trick, but be sure to plan you special night months in advance.

The Best Times to Visit Amsterdam For Great Weather, Smaller Crowds, and Tulips

A local weighs in on when to book an Amsterdam adventure.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

visit amsterdam in september

Amsterdam may be famous for its enchanting canals, but the vibrant cultural hub has far more to offer travelers than scenic waterways. This popular destination is home to world-class museums, a spate of superb restaurants, and incredible cycling paths. And while a city with so much happening doesn’t really have an off-peak period (unlike seasonal European destinations like Positano or the South of France ), you will definitely notice that certain windows of time are more bustling than others.

With the help of Unwana van der Werk, guest relations manager at Conservatorium Amsterdam , we've broken down the best times to visit the capital for great weather, fewer crowds, colorful flowers, and more.

·  High Season:  April to September   ·  Shoulder Season: October to December and March ·  Low Season: January and February

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Best Times to Visit Amsterdam for Smaller Crowds

“November and February are relaxed months in the Netherlands — and that’s very true of Amsterdam,” explains van der Werk. Foodies, art lovers, and history buffs who don’t mind rolling the dice on the weather will find that tickets are readily available to various attractions these months. You can also expect short queues and smaller crowds at museums. That means you'll get to see priceless masterpieces at the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum up close. It’s also much easier to secure a last-minute restaurant reservation or snag a table at a buzzy bar.

neirfy/Getty Images

Best Times to Visit Amsterdam for Good Weather

The city is at its most vibrant from June to September, when the weather is amazing and daylight hours stretch into evening. That also makes it the perfect time of year to enjoy outdoor activities. Take a scenic boat tour along the canals, or cycle on idyllic and sunny brick roads. Or, check out abundant colorful blooms in the countryside. Several flower shows, parades, music festivals, and cultural events take place during the summer, too.

Michela Sieman/Travel +Leisure

Best Times to Visit Amsterdam for Lower Prices

Like most destinations, demand drives price in Amsterdam. Rates soar in the busy summer months; on the flip side, the slower months of November and February are when you might save a few bucks, according to van der Werk.

George Pachantouris/Getty Images

Best Times to Visit Amsterdam for Flowers

The legendary blooms of the Netherlands begin to show themselves in early April, and they mesmerize bud chasers in May, too. “You can explore the largest flower gardens in the world, with tulips of every color, or celebrate King’s Day with the locals (an orange outfit would be necessary to join the festivities),” says van der Werk of this season. “This is the prettiest time to do a bike tour through the city center or countryside.”

Nisangha/Getty Images

Worst Time to Visit Amsterdam

Again, Amsterdam doesn’t have a true off-season, but there are certainly times when the grey skies and cold temperatures change the vibe of the city. January and February tend to be quite cold and dreary, so you're unlikely to see people lingering at outdoor cafes. The locals never stop biking around, though, and the grey skies make for moody selfies. Plus, a lack of lines at many cultural attractions and lower rates are something to think about.

Best Times To Visit Amsterdam

The best time to visit Amsterdam is between April and May or September and November – right before or directly after the summertime high tourist season. You'll contend with fewer tourists, you'll enjoy somewhat mild temperatures (the city's weather is notoriously finicky), and you'll also experience Amsterdam as the locals do – at its laid-back best. But if it's a deal you're after – and you don't mind temperatures in the 30 to 40-degree range – you should plan a winter vacation; you'll find lower hotel rates and depleted crowds at the city's top sites. No matter what time of year you plan to visit, you'll find the city offers a jampacked social calendar (it hosts more than 300 festivals a year).

11 Things to Do in Amsterdam in September

Streets of Amsterdam | ©Matheus Frade

September is a changing month. In the first days of the month the good weather is still present but as it progresses it gives way to the arrival of cold and with it the city is cleared of tourists. Taking advantage of the last days of sunshine and pleasant temperatures, in September outdoor events are held and many of the museums and monuments open their doors in a special way.

The eleventh month of the year in is marked by the festival of open monuments, the theater festival and art galleries among many other things that I invite you to discover below:

1. On the worst weather days, take shelter in its museums

The weather in Amsterdam in September is quite changeable so bad weather can make an appearance especially at the end of the month. For these days there is nothing better than taking shelter and visiting the **city'**s museums . Amsterdam is home to more than 50 museums of various kinds and some of them are known worldwide.

As a must are the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam , the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum . These three are also together where the famous museum market is held. Well known and frequented by locals, it takes place in September and is composed of numerous stalls selling textiles, jewelry, and very particular stationery.

Another must-see museum on your trip to Amsterdam is the Anne Frank House Museum . And if you want to escape from the more typical, I recommend:

  • The Dutch Resistance Museum in Amsterdam , where you will delve into Dutch life during the period of World War II.
  • The Upside Down Museum in Amsterdam , the largest European museum dedicated to Instagram.
  • The Ripley Museum in Amsterdam , which has a world's outstanding collection of natural, scientific, artistic and human oddities.
  • The Modern Contemporary Museum in the capital of the Netherlands, also known as the Amsterdam Snot .
  • The Amsterdam Diamond Museum , which has one of the most important jewelry collections in Europe.
  • The Amsterdam Jewish Museum , where you will explore the history of the Jewish community in Holland.

2. Enjoy a cruise in Amsterdam

If you want to take the best pictures of your trip, you have to book a canal cruise in Amsterdam in September, you won't be disappointed! With the characteristic light of this time of the year, you will get pictures that will have nothing to envy to the most beautiful postcards.

On this tour, which lasts about an hour , you will get to know these canals, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO . In addition, you will see some of the most characteristic sites of the city:

  • Magere Brug : a double bascule bridge of Dutch architecture, typical of the 17th century.
  • Anne Frank House : the place where Anne Frank lived during World War II.
  • The rich Golden Curve : a curved stretch of the Herengracht canal, which is surrounded by spectacular buildings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
  • The popular Red Light District .

In addition, you won't miss any detail of the architecture and history along the tour thanks to the audio guide - don't hesitate! The experience will not disappoint you.

Book a canal cruise in Amsterdam

3. Contemplate Amsterdam from its viewpoints

Since in September we have the last days of the year completely clear is a good time to see the city of Amsterdam from above. There are many viewpoints for this, but I recommend two that are also free.

  • The first, and considered the one with the best views, is the National Library. It is the largest public library in the country and from the terrace of its cafes on the top floor we get the best views of Amsterdam.
  • The other best option is the terrace of the Museum of Science and Technology NEMO, with free access and with chairs and benches to enjoy the panoramic view in a relaxed way. To not miss this experience, do not hesitate to book your ticket for the NEMO science museum in Amsterdam .

Book your ticket for the NEMO Science Museum Amsterdam

4. Discover Bruges with a tour from Amsterdam

September, especially in the beginning and middle of the month when the weather is still good, is an ideal time to make an excursion to Bruges and discover this beautiful city characterized by its canals and declared World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2000.

Together with a professional guide , you will discover this city known under the nickname of "Venice of the North" and you will contemplate some of its main points of interest and most characteristic enclaves such as:

  • The Plaza Mayor.
  • The Hospital of San Juan.
  • The Belfort bell tower.
  • The Burg Square.
  • The Church of Our Lady.
  • The Rosary Pier.
  • Minnewater Park.

A 12-hour tour, which includes round-trip transportation , where you will also enjoy a chocolate tasting . Remember: Belgium is the land of chocolate.

Book a tour to Bruges

5. Take advantage of the last days of good weather to stroll through its parks

The last redoubts of summer and good weather are experienced in the first days of September. It is the ideal time to stroll and enjoy the many green spaces of Amsterdam. In July and August the parks are full to overflowing, but in September you can enjoy them with more tranquility and even with pleasant temperatures .

The best known is the Vondelpark that offers pleasant walks, lawns for picnics, theaters and outdoor concerts that only take place in summer. Other parks in the city are the Rembrandtpark, the Oosterpark or the Museumplein.

Book a bike tour in Amsterdam

6. Enjoy the weekend of the open monuments

The main event of the Dutch city in September happens on the second weekend of the month and it is the Open Monument Weekend. During this time buildings and monuments that are inaccessible during the rest of the year open their doors . This holiday is celebrated all over the country but Amsterdam is where you can enjoy the most because of its high number of buildings and landmarks.

Several private palaces with their spectacular gardens on the banks of the canals, castles and old factories are some examples of the places of interest that can be visited this weekend.

In addition to seeing the inside of some buildings that are not usually open to the public, there are exclusive events and tours that can only be done on these dates. If your visit to Amsterdam coincides with this weekend do not miss the opportunity to learn the secrets of the city.

7. Visit the flower market at the perfect time

The flower market is one of Amsterdam's must-see sights . Since 1862 this market has been a favorite for Amsterdammers to buy the flowers and plants so typical of the country . In fact, one of the best souvenirs and gifts you can buy in Amsterdam is a tulip bulb. Just in September begins the planting season of this plant and therefore the market is filled with endless varieties of tulips.

If you want one of these flowers as a souvenir or gift it is the perfect time to buy them and plant them to bloom in spring as recommended by experts in the field. Visiting the flower market is a feast for the eyes and nose.

Book a guided tour of Amsterdam

8. Go to the theater and enjoy street culture

Going to the theater in Amsterdam is a tip I can give you all year round, but especially in the month of September. In this month the Dutch theater festival is celebrated and the city is filled with performing arts shows in the many theaters of Amsterdam. This theater festival also takes to the streets and some squares such as Amstelveld square offer free dance, music and theatrical performances.

At the same time, other festivals are held in September, such as the festival of the Strip or the Klassiek op het Amstelveld. Both are free and open-air and present a program full of music, especially classical, with established and emerging artists, bands, choirs and orchestras that enliven the streets and squares of Amsterdam.

9. Enjoy sightseeing and sports in September in Amsterdam

September is also a month of sporting events. Two of the most important in the city take place in this month. The first one is the Amsterdam City Swim . A swimming race that brings together some 3,000 swimmers who participate to raise funds for associations for those affected by neurological diseases. The race takes place in the central canals of Amsterdam and it is always a spectacle to watch the swimmers go through the canals that are usually only used by boats.

Running enthusiasts also have their event. The Dam tot Damloop race brings together some 35,000 runners who follow a winding 16-kilometer route from Amsterdam to the center of Zaandam. If you can't just watch it from the sidelines, you can join in and combine tourism with sport.

10. Take a tour of the city's art galleries

Amsterdam is full of art galleries . Many of them are free to visit and September is one of the best times to do so. Thanks to another festival (Amsterdam is the capital of festivals for a reason) known as the Unseen Amsterdam, a festival of contemporary photography, the art galleries are filled with exhibitions.

It is an attraction for many international photographers and is used to make talks and photography days around the city. If you are a lover of photography Amsterdam gives you in September its best face. One of the most original plans you can do in Amsterdam .

11. Photograph the sunset and night on the bridge of 15 bridges

Thanks to the clear skies on some days and its sunsets, the month of September is one of the most recommended for spectacular photographs in the beautiful canals of the city. The most recommended spot to get one of the most characteristic and beautiful pictures of Amsterdam is at the corner of Reguliersgracht and Herengracht streets .

At this point is the bridge of the 15 bridges. Climbing the Reguliersgracht bridge we have several arched bridges in three different directions for a total of 15 bridges. The sunset gives us a spectacular photo from this point and at night they are also illuminated to offer us the ideal photograph.

Temperatures in Amsterdam in September

If there is a word that defines the weather in Amsterdam in September , it is changeable . In this transitional month between summer and autumn there are sunny, clear days and cooler, windy, cloudy days. Maximum temperatures are lower than in July and August and average around 20 degrees Celsius . Minimum temperatures drop as the days go by and approach 10 degrees .

Rainfall is still a common occurrence in Amsterdam and it is not uncommon for 30% of the days to be rainy. However, September is generally a good month to visit the city of canals considering that the cold weather arrives later and stays well into spring.

Book the Amsterdam City Sightseeing bus tour

The tourist flow in Amsterdam in September

Note that September is still considered a high season month but the difference compared to June, July and August is remarkable. The tourist flow drops a lot in this month partly because of the drop in temperatures and partly because the summer vacations are over for many people, so it is an ideal month to enjoy all there is to see and do in Amsterdam .

Although the number of tourists drops, you can still find queues at Amsterdam' s best museums and most popular monuments, as well as difficulties in finding accommodation especially during the first fortnight. But these problems are much less common than in the peak summer months.

Amsterdam prices in September

As for the prices, they go down as the demand of tourists goes down and the month progresses . In the first days of the month the demand is still high so they are maintained, but as we go deeper we notice a drop in the rate of hotels, accommodation and flights. Of course prices are still far from their minimum which occurs in the winter months when the temperature drops almost as much as the influx of tourists.

What to pack for a visit to Amsterdam in September

Since September is a month of changeable weather we have to be well prepared and put in our suitcase clothes for different scenarios. Here is what you should not miss in your luggage if you travel to Amsterdam in September:

  • Light clothing and even shorts and summer T-shirts because, especially if you travel at the beginning of the month, there are still days of good temperature.
  • Jackets and warmer clothes are always a must.
  • Comfortable shoes for long days of walking through the streets of Amsterdam. If it is waterproof better in case it rains.
  • It is very likely to rain, but in these cases the umbrella is not the best as it is usually very windy in Amsterdam. The most advisable is the raincoat .
