What To Expect From Ultimate World Cruise

Get ready to visit all seven continents, 65 countries, over 150 ports of call, and 11 world wonders..

By Robert Schrader | Published on October 18, 2023

1. Are You The Ideal World Cruise Traveler?

Looking at Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise℠ itinerary, you might be surprised by the sheer volume of bucket-list sites, even if you consider yourself a seasoned traveler. The great explorers of history spent this long — the full cruise lasts 274 days — on a single sailing across the sea, never mind going to all corners of the globe.

Your epic journey around the world, of course, is sure to come with plenty of new-to-you destinations. From world wonders such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Wall of China to sun-dappled islands from French Polynesia to Greece, the array and diversity of horizons you sail to is unparalleled. This isn't a cruise — it's the  cruise to top all other cruises.

2. Do You Want To Minimize Flights?

Taj Mahal Entrance, Cochin, India

3. Is This Trip Too Good To Be True?

It might sound unbelievable that you'll be able to spread your arms out under Argentina's Christ the Redeemer statue and sip cocktails beneath the Sydney Opera House on the same sailing, but on this epic journey around the world, you can. The key to making the most of each port is to pace yourself — this is a long trip, in the best way possible.

Some stops along the Ultimate World Cruise℠ will invite more hiking and exploration (Jordan's ruins of Petra, for example), while the colorful waterfronts of European idylls like Bergen, Norway, are better for sitting down for a meal or drink. What makes this vacation unique is the luxury of time and space, which allow you to truly relax and explore many sides of yourself. You might consider yourself a total beach bum as you reach the sandy shores of Oahu but feel like a history buff as you take in the Taj Mahal. You might feel like an explorer as you explore the ruins of Chichén Itzá in Mexico on foot, then opt to take a camel when you reach the Pyramids of Giza.

4. How Much Does It Cost?

As you can imagine, this once-in-a-lifetime epic journey around the world is highly customizable. The ticket price for the 274-night journey ranges from $59,999 per person for an interior stateroom to $117,599 for a junior suite on the 2,476-passenger Serenade of the Seas® .

You might think that if you travel the world for almost a year, you'll need to bring your whole home with you, but this isn't necessarily the case. In fact, you'll want to err on the side of bringing less rather than more. You'll have laundry services (among other complimentary treats)  included in your fare, and can buy almost anything you need at ports. Focus on bringing a basic wardrobe built for laying in different climates, and any special items you know you can't easily buy, as well as medications and other need-to-haves. You won't want forget to pack bathing suits for Mexico, for example, or a coat for colder destinations.

So, is this the best way to travel the world? That's somewhat a matter of personal preference. Sailing the world with many of the same passengers offers an unprecendented bonding experience with like-minded travelers. The guests and crew become very much like a family on a world cruise, which can be a real joy to watch unfold — especially if you follow cruise etiquette and are considerate of others during the voyage. And the itinerary of the Ultimate World Cruise℠ 2023 is so extensive it's almost impossible to imagine. Certainly, if you love cruising and want to see much of the world as possible in one fell swoop, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to check many travel icons off your bucket list.

Go to the Kukulcan Pyramid at the Chichen Itza in Mexico

5. Do You Really Set Sail For ... Everywhere?

It's important to note that you can opt for the whole cruise, or stay onboard for however long you want. Each of four Ultimate World Cruise℠ segments — Americas, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Med and Europe & Beyond — can be booked a la carte, with business class airfare between your home and wherever you start and end included in the price. Or, pick one of the 17 sailings (ranging from nine to 29 nights) that make up the cruise and visit the sites that are most exciting to you.

Then again, if you can find the time, it's tempting to complete most of your bucket list in a single, epic trip when you circumnavigate the globe onboard a cruise ship. The iconic world wonders you'll see are only the beginning on this epic adventure.

Insider Today

Royal Caribbean is launching a 274-night cruise around the world to set sail in 2023.

Prices start at $61,000 per person.

In a press release on Wednesday, the cruise line said it was "the longest and most comprehensive world cruise out there."

The company said the Ultimate World Cruise, set to depart from Miami, would visit more than 150 destinations in 65 countries on all seven continents.

Royal Caribbean said stops would include Casablanca in Morocco; the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; Antarctica; Brazil, where passengers can see the Christ the Redeemer statue on New Year's Eve; and Beijing.

The cruise starts at $61,000 per person

The inaugural cruise is scheduled to depart from Miami on December 10, 2023, and return on September 10, 2024.

Passengers would travel on the Serenade of the Seas , which has 13 decks and a mini-golf course, an arcade, a rock-climbing wall, a pool, a theater, and a spa. The ship can accommodate almost 2,500 passengers and more than 800 crew members, Royal Caribbean said.

Prices start at $61,000 for a person in an interior stateroom, rising to $65,000 for an oceanview stateroom and $79,000 for a balcony stateroom. A stay in a junior suite starts at $112,000 per person.

Royal Caribbean said passengers would get a 10% discount if they pay in full by January 6, 2023.

The pandemic ground world travel to a halt last year, and cruise lines' revenue plummeted . Carnival Cruises said in June 2020 that it would sell six cruise ships after posting a $4.4 billion loss.

With the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, the industry has rebounded .

"Now more than ever, people have resolved to travel the world and make up for lost time," Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, said in the press release.

The Ultimate World Cruise is split into four legs: the Americas and Antarctica, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and northern Europe. Passengers can book them individually rather than opting for the full nine-month trip.

Bookings opened on Wednesday for Royal Caribbean's loyalty-program members at the diamond level or above and will open on October 27 for all other passengers, the company said.

Royal Caribbean said it would announce prices for the four individual legs of the trip when bookings for them open in December.

  • The Ultimate World Cruise offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the world.
  • Accommodation prices start at $59,999 per person, making the nine-month trip extremely costly.

There are cruises to suit any type of traveler , but not just any would-be passenger would take the opportunity to spend nine months on a cruise. Between the sky-high cost and the idea of being away from home for such an extended period, Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise isn't for everybody — but that doesn't mean we're not fascinated by it!

Royal Caribbean Unveils Their Icon Of The Seas Cruise Ship

Those brave (and well-to-do) enough to embark on such an adventure may have the best stories to tell after their voyage ends. After all, going on the Ultimate World Cruise is the opportunity of a lifetime. Here's what we know so far about Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise, now that it's underway.

The Ultimate World Cruise: A Nine-Month Cruise Around the World

The ultimate world cruise lasts 274 days and visits 65 countries.

Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise, which started its journey on December 10, 2023, will visit all seven continents and offer those on board the chance to visit 65 countries. The cruise should last until September 10, 2024.

The cruise doesn't force passengers to commit to the entire nine-month voyage. Instead, they can pick one (or all) of the four segments the cruise includes, each in a different region of the world. The first one takes travelers to North and South America, lasting 67 days. The second leg of the journey includes the Pacific, with stop-overs in Japan, Australia, China, and New Zealand.

Each Royal Caribbean Ship Offers Passengers Something Different

From there the cruise heads to the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Finally, the last segment lets tourists enjoy Europe for 63 days, with stops and excursions in Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden.

The Ultimate World Cruise showcases Serenade of the Seas, a Radiance-class cruise ship that can hold 2,466 passengers. Serenade of the Seas has five types of accommodations that start at an eye-watering $59,999 per person for the entire trip.

How Much Does The Ultimate World Cruise Cost?

  • Interior Stateroom: from $59,999 per person
  • Ocean View Stateroom: from $64,999 per person
  • Balcony Stateroom: from $82,949 per person
  • Junior Suites: from $117,599 per person
  • Royal Suite: $760,000 per person

The Pros Of Spending Nine Months On Serenade Of The Seas

How top-tier membership makes the voyage a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Newlyweds, those approaching retirement, and travelers who want to mark anniversaries and milestones are likely to get the most out of the Ultimate World Cruise. They can enjoy a milestone on a trip that has them visit places that would be otherwise prohibitively expensive to explore on their own.

Other pros include having the highest tier of membership on Royal Caribbean cruise lines. Pinnacle members, as they are known, get the chance to access different luxury excursions and town halls that regular members or travelers do not on the Ultimate World Cruise. This comes as an addition to other freebies and perks they receive on the cruise.

Everything You Need To Know About CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's Bahamas Island

Finally, the biggest pro of taking a cruise that takes tourists all over the world is the exposure they gain to different cultures. There is no denying that a voyage with this scope is likely to change lives and enrich the experience and memories of all who embark on this ship.

The Four Legs Of The Ultimate World Cruise

  • The Ultimate Americas Cruise: 64 nights and 36 destinations
  • The Ultimate Asia Pacific Cruise: 84 nights and 40 destinations
  • The Ultimate Middle East & Med Cruise: 63 nights and 44 destinations
  • Ultimate Europe & Beyond: 63 nights and 40 destinations

The Cons Of Spending Nine Months At Sea

There aren't many cons to the ultimate world cruise.

Other than maybe getting too much of a good thing in the form of eating cruise-ship food for nine months, there aren't many cons to this trip. Getting to explore the world from the luxury of a $60,000 room is a dream come true for many, and having to hit the gym — which can be done on the ship — somewhat harder than normally isn't much of a deterrent.

Other possible cons include finding someone to house-sit for such an extended duration and being able to work remotely. Not every job accepts a nine-month holiday, so not having an employer who's willing to work with the different schedules passengers need while on this cruise is a potential con.

It's also not the best arrangement for families with school-age children, of course; the Serenade of the Seas is, however, one of the best Royal Caribbean cruise ships for adults .

The Ultimate Voyage: How Much Does A World Cruise ACTUALLY Cost

Embarking on a world cruise is akin to stepping into a realm of unparalleled adventure and luxury, often considered the zenith of seafaring voyages.

These grand expeditions, while not always encircling the globe completely, offer an extensive journey through multiple continents, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in a tapestry of global cultures and breathtaking vistas—all from the comfort of a floating haven.

However, the allure of navigating the world’s waters from port to exotic port does come with a notable price tag.

As we delve into the world of these majestic journeys, we’ll uncover what it truly costs to set sail on such a dream voyage and the myriad of options available for those yearning to turn this dream into their reality.

Table of Contents

How Much Does A World Cruise Cost?

The cost of a world cruise varies significantly depending on the cruise line, length of the journey, and the type of accommodations chosen. Prices can start from around $14,719 and soar up to $105,500 per person, based on double occupancy, excluding taxes and port fees .

This wide range reflects the diverse range of itineraries, services, and levels of luxury available to travelers seeking to circumnavigate the globe by sea.

Factors Affecting Price

The cost of a world cruise is influenced by several key factors, each contributing to the overall pricing structure and offering potential passengers a range of choices to suit their budget and preferences.

Duration is a primary factor; longer cruises, often extending up to six months or more, naturally incur a higher cost due to the extended provision of accommodation, meals, and onboard amenities.

The length of the journey directly correlates with the price, as a more extended cruise offers a more comprehensive exploration of the world but requires a greater financial commitment.

Another critical factor is the choice of cruise line and the type of stateroom selected. Luxury cruise lines, known for their exceptional service, exquisite dining options, and spacious accommodations, command higher prices.

Within each cruise, the selection of staterooms—from interior cabins to lavish suites with ocean views or balconies—also plays a significant role in pricing.

Suites, offering enhanced comfort and amenities, are priced at the premium end of the spectrum.

Additionally, what’s included in the cruise fare varies by company; some cruises are more inclusive, covering extras like shore excursions, Wi-Fi, drinks, and specialty dining, which can offer added value and affect the overall cost perception.

The itinerary itself, including the number and type of ports visited, can also impact the cost. Cruises that include more exclusive or remote destinations often have a higher price due to the logistical costs associated with such ports.

Moreover, the timing of the cruise—whether it falls in peak travel seasons or off-peak times—can influence pricing, with peak season voyages typically being more expensive.

Together, these factors combine to shape the cost of a world cruise, offering a spectrum of pricing that accommodates a range of travel budgets and preferences, making the dream of circumnavigating the globe accessible to a diverse array of travelers.

How Long Does A World Cruise Take?

The duration of a world cruise can vary widely, typically ranging from about 100 to 180 days, although some exceptional itineraries extend even longer. These extensive voyages are designed to offer an in-depth exploration of multiple continents and oceans, visiting dozens of ports across the globe.

The specific length of a world cruise depends on the cruise line, the itinerary’s complexity, and the number of destinations included, allowing travelers to experience a comprehensive journey around the world.

What Is The Best World Cruise?

The “best” around-the-world cruise is subjective and depends on individual preferences, including the level of luxury, range of destinations, and onboard amenities desired. Some travelers might prefer the comprehensive itineraries and inclusive luxuries offered by lines like Regent Seven Seas or Silversea, known for their ultra-luxury experiences.

Others may opt for cruises offered by Viking or Oceania, which are celebrated for their cultural enrichment and extensive port visits.

Ultimately, the best cruise is one that aligns with your travel style, budget, and the regions of the world you’re most eager to explore.

How many countries does a world cruise visit?

The number of countries a world cruise visits can vary significantly depending on the itinerary and the cruise line. Typically, a world cruise can cover anywhere from 20 to 40 or more countries, offering a wide array of cultural experiences, landscapes, and climates.

These itineraries are meticulously planned to include a mix of popular destinations and hidden gems across different continents, providing an extensive exploration of the globe.

The exact number of countries visited allows passengers to immerse themselves in a diverse range of cultures and environments, making each world cruise a unique and enriching experience.

Can you book segments of a world cruise or do you have to do the whole thing?

Yes, you can book segments of a world cruise instead of committing to the entire journey. Many cruise lines offer this flexibility, allowing passengers to experience a portion of the cruise that interests them the most, both in terms of destinations and duration.

These segments can range from a few weeks to over a month, providing a taste of the world cruise experience without the extensive time and financial commitment of the full voyage.

This option caters to travelers with limited time or those who wish to focus on specific regions, making world cruising accessible to a broader audience.

Viking Neptune

Can you get off a cruise to tour for a few days and rejoin the ship in its next port?

Yes, it’s possible to disembark from a cruise ship to explore a destination for a few days and then rejoin the ship at its next port of call. This arrangement, often referred to as a “port visit” or “shore excursion,” requires careful planning and coordination with the cruise line.

Passengers must inform the cruise line of their plans in advance and ensure they meet the ship at the agreed-upon time and location.

It’s also important to be aware of any visa requirements or travel restrictions for the destinations you plan to visit. While not all cruise lines may offer this flexibility, many do accommodate such requests to enhance the passenger experience.

What To Consider Before Going On A World Cruise?

Embarking on a world cruise is a significant investment, not just financially but also in terms of time and preparation. Before setting sail on this monumental journey, several factors require careful consideration to ensure the experience aligns with your expectations and desires.

One of the foremost considerations is the itinerary. A world cruise offers an opportunity to explore numerous countries and cultures, so it’s essential to choose a voyage that visits destinations you’re genuinely interested in.

You’ll want to consider the duration of the cruise and how it fits with your lifestyle and commitments, as these journeys can last several months. Budget plays a critical role in planning for a world cruise.

Beyond the initial cost of the cruise, which can vary widely based on the cruise line and type of accommodation, potential travelers should account for additional expenses such as shore excursions, onboard spending, and travel insurance.

Some cruises are more inclusive, covering gratuities, drinks, and even flights, which can provide better value.

Evaluating what’s included in the fare versus what will be paid out of pocket can help in selecting a cruise that matches your financial comfort level.

Another vital aspect to ponder is the living conditions aboard the ship. The size and type of your stateroom, the amenities offered onboard, and the ship’s overall environment will significantly impact your daily life during the cruise.

For such an extended period at sea, comfort, and personal space become paramount. Therefore, deciding whether to splurge on a larger room with a view or balcony might enhance your experience. Additionally, understanding the ship’s facilities, dining options, and entertainment can help set the right expectations.

Lastly, consider the social and physical aspects of a world cruise. The demographic of fellow passengers, the opportunity for social interaction, and the type of activities and excursions offered should align with your social preferences and physical capabilities.

Furthermore, staying healthy and active is crucial, so investigate the ship’s medical facilities and wellness options, including fitness centers, pools, and recreational activities.

By thoroughly considering these elements, travelers can embark on a world cruise that not only meets but exceeds their dream vacation criteria, ensuring an unforgettable global adventure.

Enter the cruise ship final boss. We're talking a nine month long cruise ship holiday taking you across the entire planet. And the price of such a holiday is going to leave you wide eyed.

Alright, we know that cruises aren't for everybody. Some love nothing more than lying on the beach or a city break.

But millions head to the open waters every year, so there's clearly a demand for it. And for many, it'll allow them to do the likes of a city break and beach trip through day trip excursions, meaning all boxes are left ticked.

There's also very particular kinds of cruise holidays , including those of the spicy variety where couples share sexual partners .

That's not officially on the cards with this one, though.

Enter Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise on board the 22-year-old Serenade of the Seas.

Officially the world's longest cruise, it'll take passengers around the world and to more than 60 countries for a grand total of 274 days.

Where does it take you?

There's a whole lot of options when it comes to the cruise, with it ranging from spending just nine days on board right up to the entire nine months, which includes travelling to see all eight wonders of the world .

We're talking The Great Pyramid of Giza and Rome's Colosseum all the way over to Machu Picchu in Peru.

But how much is it going to cost you to take the nine month trip?

Well, it's not cheap at all. But it does come with a lot of added extras included such as Wi-Fi , business class plane travel to get to the departure destination, and premium alcoholic drinks packages .

Laundry is also included which is a necessity when you're there for nine months, with it done for you by staff. Your tips to the staff are also included in the total price.

"Considering all that’s included in your 274-night Ultimate World Cruise fare, you’ll enjoy an incredible value," Royal Caribbean states.

"No matter which stateroom you choose, your fare includes Ultimate World Cruise complimentary amenities like business class airfare, pre-cruise hotel and gala, Deluxe Beverage Package, gratuities, VOOM internet package, wash and fold laundry service, and more."

On board the Serenade of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

There are four cabin options to pick from on the Ultimate World Cruise.

The cheapest is the Interior Stateroom, which starts at a whopping $59,999 (£47,176). And that's per person, not per cabin. You get a 10% discount ($6,000 discount) if you pay-in-full,

An Ocean View Stateroom that costs from £64,999 (£51,108) per person; a Balcony Stateroom is $82,949 (£65,221) a person; and the Junior Suites start from $117,599 (£92,466) a person.

There are also other premium suites on board but for those, you have to call the cruise line directly for pricing.

The costs don't stop there. Taxes, fees, and port expenses of $4,667 (£3,669) a person will be added on top of the cabin.

The world cruise has gone viral on TikTok , with many giving their two cents over the holiday.

One said: "If money was no object, I absolutely would take this trip."

Another wrote: "This will become a boomer cruise."

And a third posted: "Think about how much money you would save from not buying gas and groceries, as well as other expenses."

A fourth echoed this, saying: "That's not bad considering. Rent, food, gas, etc and you get to travel the world while you do it? If you work remote this might be worth it."

For $61,000, you can take Royal Caribbean’s 274-night cruise around the world

The Ultimate World Cruise will visit more than 150 destinations

ultimate world cruise price

Cruise-lovers yearning to return to the open seas, this news is for you: Royal Caribbean International announced its inaugural 274-day Ultimate World Cruise will set sail in 2023.

The more than 150-destination itinerary aboard the Serenade of the Seas starts in Miami and includes visits to every continent, 65 countries and 11 world wonders . It will cost you $61,000 for an interior state room, all the way up to $112,000 for a junior suite.

The cruise will sail from Dec. 10, 2023, to Sept. 10, 2024. Bookings can be made by phone now.

The journey includes opportunities to see just about every iconic tourist draw on the planet. Mount Fuji, the Taj Mahal, the Great Barrier Reef, Chichen Itza, Machu Picchu, the Blue Lagoon and the Great Wall of China. If you can think of it, it’s probably on the list.

The star of the show are obviously the ports of call, but what about the ship you will be living on for 274 nights? According to Cruise Critic , Serenade of the Seas is a midsize vessel that can carry 2,100-passengers and nearly 900 crew members.

Peak Caribbean cruise season is coming. Here’s what to know before getting on board.

The ship’s website promises a lot to do, which is important considering world cruise guests will be spending a lot of time on board.

Many amenities are ones you may expect, such as a theater, a spa and a fitness center. Then there are the ones you might not, including mini golf, rock climbing and singalong parties. There’s a nightclub where guests can go to “dance, chill or be noticed,” a card room and a game show. Travelers can attend guest lectures and take classes on cupcake-making, scrapbooking, dancing, sushi and foreign languages, among others.

On Royal Caribbean’s Facebook post announcing the world cruise , fans celebrated the news but lamented the cost.

“Lord, let me run grab a lottery ticket real quick!” Rebecca Taylor Little commented.

“Sounds absolutely wonderful! It breaks my heart that I’ll probably never be able to experience it,” Trisha O’Neill commented. “Why are all the cool itineraries reserved for only the rich?”

Covid will find its way onto cruises. The critical thing is what happens next.

A number of companies have reintroduced world cruises after a pandemic hiatus, and they, too, are not cheap.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 143-night world cruise, priced from $78,000 to $209,000, departs on Jan. 7, 2023. Oceania Cruises’ 2023 “Around The World In 180 Days” voyage sold out in a single day when bookings (starting at $41,600) went live on Jan. 27, 2021. Silversea also sold out its 2023 world cruise in a day , with fares ranging from $74,000 to $278,000 per person.

As the cruise industry recovers from billions of dollars in losses, most are operating with new covid protocols in place to avoid onboard outbreaks. On Royal Caribbean cruises leaving from the U.S. and various other international ports, all passengers 12 and older must be vaccinated . All passengers must present negative tests before boarding and can expect indoor mask mandates

While the delta variant surge appeared to impact cruise sales over the summer, it seems customers don’t need much convincing to sign up for sailings again. Carnival announced last month that the company’s “cumulative advanced bookings for the second half of 2022 are ahead of a very strong 2019.” Data from Expedia Group’s Expedia Cruises 2021 Virtual Conference comparing the first quarters of 2021 to 2019 shows the average length of cruise bookings has increased, as has the average spend per cabin.

“People love cruising and people are tired of boredom,” Vicky Freed, Royal Caribbean International’s senior vice president of sales, trade support and service, told The Washington Post in August. “People are saying ‘I want to go out’ and they’re spending more on vacations now because they have vacation dollars saved up from 2020 and possibly 2021.”

More cruise news

Living at sea: Travelers on a 9-month world cruise are going viral on social media. For some travelers, not even nine months was enough time on a ship; they sold cars, moved out of their homes and prepared to set sail for three years . That plan fell apart, but a 3.5-year version is waiting in the wings.

Passengers beware: It’s not all buffets and dance contests. Crime data reported by cruise lines show that the number of sex crimes has increased compared to previous years. And though man-overboard cases are rare, they are usually deadly .

The more you know: If you’re cruise-curious, here are six tips from a newcomer. Remember that in most cases, extra fees and add-ons will increase the seemingly cheap price of a sailing. And if you happen to get sick , know what to expect on board.

Royal Caribbean made a big splash with the recent announcement of its first-ever world cruise, a 274-night mega-sailing visiting 65 countries and 150 destinations on all seven continents.

The ‘Ultimate World Cruise’ on Serenade of the Seas was announced October 20. The 2,476-passenger ship will sail round-trip from Miami, departing December 10, 2023 and returning September 10, 2024.

serenade of the seas exterior

It’s two years away, and you might think Royal Caribbean figured it needed some lead-time to sell a cruise with fares starting at $60,000 and ranging up into the hundreds of thousands.

But that’s not what happened, as Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley excitedly explained during last week’s quarterly results call with financial analysts.

“I have to jump in, Jamie. Jamie, I have to jump in,” Bayley said, interrupting a question from an analyst. “We launched the World Cruise with Royal Caribbean International literally about 10 days ago and we only made it available to 16 million loyalty members. And within seven days, we were 70 percent booked.”

The average price of a balcony room for the cruise is $75,000, Bayley said, and the Royal Suite, the top accommodation on Serenade , went for $760,000. Bookings included nonrefundable deposits.

‘Even we were taken aback by the unbelievable response of our loyalty members,” Bayley said, adding that the success is indicative of the overall pent-up demand for cruising after the long pandemic pause.

When announcing the ambitious nine-month voyage, which includes 57 places Royal Caribbean has never before visited, Bayley called it “the world cruise of world cruises.”

“Now more than ever, people have resolved to travel the world and make up for lost time. To travelers asking themselves where they should go next, we say everywhere,” Bayley said.

For those interested in a piece of the remaining real estate on Serenade of the Seas for its ‘Ultimate World Cruise,’ there’s a choice of booking the full trip or one or more of four segments:

  • ‘Round the Horn: Americas and Antarctica Expedition’ — December 10, 2023 to February 11, 2024
  • ‘Wonders of Asia and the Pacific Expedition’ — February 11 to May 9, 2024
  • ‘Middle East Treasures and Marvels of the Med Expedition’ — May 9 to July 10, 2024
  • ‘Capitals of Culture’ — July 10 to September 10, 2024

It’s a spectacular itinerary, no doubt about it. How many trips can you take that will bring you to Machu Picchu, the Great Barrier Reef, Iguazu Falls, the Great Pyramid of Giza, Petra, the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, and the Colosseum all in one?  And you’ll only have to unpack once!

A Deep Dive Into the 9-Month Ultimate World Cruise

Royal caribbean's nine-month-long ultimate world cruise was making waves on tiktok even before the fantasy sprung a few leaks. everything rocking the boat aboard the serenade of the seas :.

If you don't fear cabin fever, perhaps nine months at sea is for you.

But if even the very idea of a 274-night cruise has you reaching for Dramamine, you can always just stay on land and scroll TikTok .

Because much like Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour, you can see a  lot of what's happening aboard Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise  without shelling out five figures for a plum seat, in this case thanks to some of the younger-than-average cruisers making good use of the free Wi-Fi.

Well, free with the entry-level $53,999 price for passage aboard the  Symphony of the Seas , which will reportedly  carry 27,000 guests in total over the four legs of the trip, while more than 600 were booked for the entire itinerary.

And, naturally, many people are just making TikToks  about  the cruise , hoping for some  Below Deck -meets- Love Boat -style intrigue, with maybe a little  Triangle of Sadness  thrown in for schadenfreude.

"Imagine eating unlimited cruise food for nine months, like what that's going to do to your body," TikToker Grassmoons pondered on Dec. 14. "I just worry people aren't going to pace themselves and it's going to be really hard on their bodies."

Nevertheless, her post was captioned, "You best believe if I had $60k id be on that ship."

Meanwhile, content creator Marc Sebastian  predicted "mutiny" in a Dec. 20 TikTok : "There's going to be blood. Someone is going overboard. I want to watch. Bravo, where are you? I need eyes. We're witnessing Fyre Festival, Alabama Rush and no one is rushing there."

Within two weeks after the ship's departure from Miami on Dec. 10, TikToks tagged #UltimateWorld Cruise had been watched more than 54.8 million times, according to NBC News . That number had grown to more than 150 million by the time the clock struck 2024.

And Sebastian, 33, ended up going aboard for an 18-day stretch in January courtesy of Simon & Schuster's Atria Books, which enlisted him to host a virtual book club. His trip included a choppy ride through the Drake Passage (" Drake 's best work since hotline bling," he captioned a post ), the body of water between South America's Cape Horn and Antarctica's South Shetland Islands.

Trending Stories

Model trish goff's son nyima ward dead at 27, tom cruise & katie holmes' daughter suri reveals her college plans, billy ray cyrus shares message to miley cyrus amid alleged family rift.

He also made oodles of TikToks , poking his phone into every nook and cranny of the ship and documenting his experience on, as he cheekily put it, "this floating retirement home with a Cheesecake Factory attached."

The admitted cruise skeptic told NPR before he disembarked, "I really did think at the very beginning that I was going to find a lot of interpersonal drama within the people. But unfortunately, they're all so nice —crazy!—and they are all really kind. There's a really amazing sense of community."

And while the cruise has been going viral since it was first announced in 2021, it made more unfortunate headlines following the death of a passenger this month .

The person's identity was not released, Royal Caribbean telling E! News in a Feb. 14 statement, "We are actively providing support and assistance to the guest's loved ones at this time" and would not be sharing further details "out of the privacy of the guest and their family."

According to People , another passenger said in a since-deleted Feb. 11 TikTok that the deceased was an "elderly lady" who'd passed away the previous night.

But since the Ultimate World Cruise has another seven months to go, we may as well dock and unpack what's been happening onboard right here:

Where Does the Ultimate World Cruise Go?

The 274-night Ultimate World Cruise is scheduled to visit more than 150 ports of call in 65 countries on all seven continents, according to Royal Caribbean .

The first leg, the Ultimate Americas, ran from Dec. 10 until Feb. 11 and took passengers around North America, South America, the Caribbean and Antarctica. World wonders on the to-see list included the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro and Machu Pichu.

Leg two, Ultimate Asia Pacific, sails around Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and India—encompassing sites like the Great Barrier Reef, the Great Wall and the Taj Mahal—through May 9.

The third quarter, Ultimate Middle East and Med, goes till July 10 (and there will be pyramids), while the final leg—Ultimate Europe and Beyond—concludes Sept. 10, also known as the day people disembark, kiss the ground and cry, "Land!!!"

Aside from the whole nine months, or the duration of an entire leg, travelers had the option to book a nine-to-28-night voyage.

How Much Does the Ultimate World Cruise Cost?

What price paradise?

Individual passage for the entire thing starts at $53,999 (minus taxes and fees but including roundtrip business-class airfare and gratuities) for an Interior Stateroom and can run up to $105,839 for a Junior Suite. There's also a price-upon-request tier for "other suite categories."

A "deluxe beverage package," wash-and-fold laundry service and Wi-Fi are among the included amenities.

Meet the Boat

Royal Caribbean enlisted the Radiance-class  Serenade of the Seas , which holds 2,490 guests and 891 crew, for the Ultimate World Cruise experience. Built in Germany, she made her maiden voyage in 2003.

The ship boasts 12 passenger decks and nine passenger elevators (six of them glass), multiple pools (including a rain-or-shine option under a retractable glass roof), a fitness center, a spa, mini-golf, rock climbing, restaurants, bars and lounges, shops, an arcade, movies, live entertainment and a nightclub, plus all sorts of classes and activities.

And, according to content creator Marc Sebastien , who spent 18 nights aboard during the first leg of the journey, the ship's godmother—"Did you guys know that ships have godmothers?"—is Whoopi Goldberg .

He showed a photo of the entertainer with a plaque apparently designating her as such in a Jan. 22 TikTok . But he had thoughts, adding, "As an EGOT winner...I just don't feel like this is the right ship for you."

Who Is On the Ultimate World Cruise?

"We are thrilled to be hosting a range of guests from young solo travelers, to couples and families," Dave Humpreys , director of sales at Royal Caribbean International AUNZ, told news.com.au . "We have an impressive number of Gen-Z and millennial cruisers, with a significant number of guests between the ages of 18 to 30 joining us on various legs of this cruise."

But it  is still a cruise.

"I would say the majority, like the overwhelming majority of passengers, are retirees [or seniors]," 29-year-old  Alé Kenney , who will be celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with husband Andrew Kenney during the voyage, told TODAY.com  in December.

The young couple, who are among the many TikTok enthusiasts aboard, explained that they decided to go for it after Alé's father died of cancer at 57.

"We were like, 'Well, we can do it. We don't have a mortgage right now. We don't have kids yet,'" Andrew said. "We're just in a season of life where we could actually take nine months off and see the world."

Brandee Lake , 46, and sister Shannon , 42, are sharing a state room while on the trip with their retired parents. "We definitely are the youngest Black people on the boat," Brandee told TODAY.com . Shannon added, "I think that's why my TikTok skyrocketed so fast, because I was the first Black person that people were seeing post that was actually on the ship."

Angie Linderman , another young cruiser, said she had tested positive for the BRCA2 gene , which is linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, so there was no time like the present.

"Retirement age is not a guarantee," she explained. "And so [I'm putting] an emphasis on just doing all of the things I can do now while I'm healthy, while I'm able, instead of putting them off in hopes that I can do them later, when in reality that may not happen."

What Happens if There's a Medical Emergency?

News of a passenger death aboard the Ultimate World Cruise in February understandably caused concern among landlubbers seeing the headlines, visions of Agatha Christie mysteries dancing through their heads.

While the cruise line didn't release any details, citing the family's privacy, a content creator on the trip posted (then deleted) a TikTok in which she said the deceased was an "elderly lady."

A 2018 study from the Cruise Lines International Association stated that 50 percent of cruise ship passengers on average were over the age of 50 and almost a third of that group were older than 70. According to the Maritime Injury Guide , which noted that cruise ships tend to carry between 3,000 and 5,000 passengers, it's estimated that around 200 people die on a cruise every year.

Royal Caribbean explained in its FAQ section that medical staff is booked according to how many people are onboard, and on the Ultimate World Cruise they expected to have two or three doctors, three to five nurses and a medical secretary. (No dentists, but cruise staff will help guests find one in port.)

Listed onboard equipment and facilities includes cardiac monitors, automated external defibrillators, ventilators, x-ray machines and processors, laboratory equipment, a selection of acute care medications, a regular pharmacy and a variety of minor surgical and orthopedic supplies.

What's the onboard drama factor so far?

Speaking from the ship, passenger Brandee told  TODAY  in an interview that aired Dec. 27 that after initially being mistaken for a member of the staff—"Apparently it seemed far fetched to some that a Black woman (and family) could be a guest on the once in a lifetime experience," she captioned a TikTok about the encounter—the cruise's hotel director made sure to greet her personally at dinner to find out if all was well.

Otherwise, Brandee added, "everything has been great" and the passengers were turning into "one growing family."

She has continued to post near-daily TikToks, breaking down the at-times complicated logistics and rules regarding cruise lingo such as "independent journeys." She recently reassured concerned commenters who were aghast that she had to run it by the cruise line when she wanted to do her own thing while in Los Angeles that it was a customs issue—though she admittedly LOL'd when asked to "blink twice" if she needed help.

But as of February, nothing too wild had been reported during what looked like the colder portion of the trip.

And yet those creative TikTokers still managed to crank out content, showing off how they'd decorated their state rooms , reviewing the food,  making a farce out of trying to get a towel to stay on a lounge chair when its windy and  showing off icebergs (from a safe distance) en route to Antarctica.

Still, maybe whimsysoul's Ultimate World Cruise Bingo game—"lost passport chaos," "COVID outbreak," "staff dates passenger," etc.—will pick up once the weather gets warmer.

Bumps in the Road, er, Water

It hasn't been smooth sailing  all the way. The very first scheduled port—Devil's Island (off the coast of French Guiana in South America)—was scrapped due to bad weather, as seen in TikToks compiled by TODAY .

Then, there was a flood up on deck 12 caused by a storm (though, good news for everyone, it appeared to be rain water and not anything... murkier ).

And after all that sailing  toward Antarctica, the passengers weren't able to actually set foot on the icy continent. But it looked really beautiful.

10 Around-the-world Cruises for the Trip of a Lifetime

These world cruises offer the ultimate itineraries.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

ultimate world cruise price

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Record breaker: Luxury ship’s epic world cruise features sky-high price

D emand is strong for long cruises and if a mere 30 days isn’t enough to blow your kids’ inheritance, you can always sail around the world.

Regent Seven Seas is set to break a record on pricing with its all-inclusive, 140-night World of Splendor cruise departing Miami in January 2027 on Seven Seas Splendor. If you travel in the top Regent Suite, the journey will cost a cool $2.5 million for two.

The suite has 413 square metres of unrestrained luxury with a lounge, dining room, two bedrooms, marble-clad bathrooms and its own sauna and steam room.

You’ll sail 35,668 well-pampered nautical miles to 71 ports in 40 countries across six continents. And with 14,000 bottles of champagne and 68 kilos of caviar on board, indulgence will never run dry.

If you don’t have that kind of spare cash, budget-end ships sail world cruises, too. Royal Caribbean’s first-ever world cruise – a whopping 274 nights on Serenade of the Seas – set off for the round-trip from Miami in December 2023 and went viral on TikTok (#ultimateworldcruise) as passengers shared their experiences.

Serenade has already visited South America, the Pacific, Australia and Asia and is today docked in Cape Town before heading towards Europe. While $59,999 a person twin share for an inside cabin might seem like a lot, you might consider $218 a day to see the world is actually quite a bargain.

Royal Caribbean’s jaunt is a genuine around-the-world cruise, since it returns to Miami, its point of departure. The term “world cruise” more often designates a long cruise that visits three or more continents over several months, but doesn’t often circumnavigate the globe.

Silversea’s 140-day The Curious and the Sea cruise, for example, sails between Lisbon and Fort Lauderdale, and Viking’s 121-day Viking World Journeys sails between Los Angeles and London. Both depart in January 2026.

Even Oceania’s Around the World in 180 Days cruise, currently sailing, doesn’t quite live up to its name, since it starts in Los Angeles and finishes in New York. But let’s not quibble. Oceania says a fifth of its world cruise guests opted to add further sections on either side, bumping their journey up to 218 days.

You could argue that world cruises are really just individual shorter cruises packaged together, and you’d be right. All are also sold as individual sections and only a minority of passengers last the entire lap.

Boasting rights apart, the enticement is that world cruises typically have many more inclusions compared with shorter segments, such as business-class airfares, on-board credit, shore excursions, gratuities and laundry service.

World cruises are increasingly popular, thanks to cashed-up retirees, revenge travel following the COVID years and the growing number of digital nomads taking advantage of much-improved ship connectivity.

Oceania’s 2023 around-the-world journey sold out in a single day. Azamara’s world cruise this year also sold out, prompting additional world cruises in 2025 and 2026. And in 2026, Cunard is sending two of its ships on world cruises.

Tempted? Book well ahead as cruise enthusiasts set their sights on ever-grander journeys.

What’s the difference in river cruising in America, Europe and Asia?

Distances between river ports are short in Europe and you’ll have every opportunity to spend most days, and sometimes evenings, off the ship. The equivalent of an ocean cruise’s day at sea is rare except on the Lower Danube. European riverbanks are crammed with old towns and great cities, cathedrals and castles. Don’t expect dramatic landscapes except in spurts, such as the Rhine Gorges in Germany, or Djerdap Gorge (Iron Gate) in Serbia-Romania. You will however be enveloped in loveliness much of the time.

In America and Asia, distances are greater, so you’ll do more night sailing and spend more time on board. River ships aren’t constrained by Europe’s narrow locks and low medieval bridges, so are often larger with roomier cabins.

As most American river cruises operate in the Midwest, often low-lying landscapes aren’t dramatic, but the Snake-Columbia River in the north-west has epic semi-desert and gorge scenery.

Asia has some grand scenery, too, such as the Yangtze Three Gorges in China and stretches of rivers in India near the Himalayas. But Asia particularly stands out for the spectacle of passing local life: ferries, sampans, devotees at prayer, school children waving from bridges, and farmers busy in fields.
