Caution when booking far in advance

As a warning to others: At least three months ago I booked a 15 day round trip of Spain with Gate 1. Two weeks ago I was called and notified that the trip was cancelled due to not enough participants and was offered the same tour a week later. I was unable to do that as I had already bought flight tickets for the tour booked. Their attitude simply was sorry, there was nothing that they could do. I asked about some sort of credit for future trips due to this inconvenience and was told that the fine print stated that they could cancel tours up to sixty days out without and further actions. I also pointed out that I considered it odd that they had these tours booked a week apart given that they are two week tours, pointing out that I wondered if this was a ploy to make sure that one of them went---no comment. So, bottom line is that I was out of luck. As an aside, I also booked another tour for September. In this tour I have already been notified that there has been one hotel change (an obvious downgrade) and that one of the places on the itinerary won't be visited because they're closed that day. Really, they didn't know that? Felt people should know downfalls of working with this company.

We booked a trip to France and made 100% percent of the payment upfront. It has been more than 3 weeks and Gate1 is yet to confirm our trip. Gate1 says it has a problem with one hotel accomodation. If it is not available, Gate1 will return the money. But, until the trip is confirmed, we are unable to book our flights because we will lose a lot of money on flight tickets if trip is not confirmed. Gate1 says it will hold the money and confirm the tour only a day before. Gate1 will not allow us to cancel the trip at this time even though they have not confirmed our tour and will not confirm until the day of tour.. Gate1 behaves like a 3rd rate tour operator trying to bilk customers

We have been traveling with Gate 1 since 2014 and have been very satisfied. We booked a trip with them last month. We are unvaccinated and we’re thinking that things would slowly return to normal. And after reading Gate 1’s website statement: “ we require all travelers to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 prior to starting their trip. This requirement will remain in place until guidance changes from health organizations and governments. The second part is the key statement: “this requirement will remain in place until guidance changes from health organizations and governments”. Yesterday, March 13th, several European nations dropped their vaccination requirement for entry, but in my conversation with Gate 1 today, I was told that the vaccination requirement was a Gate 1 requirement. Something here smells really bad. Is Gate 1 discriminating against the unvaccinated?

1. I was charged $400 single supplements fees for a 7 day/5 nights hotel stay. The $400 fees supposed to gave me 1 double room for single use for 5 nights. The first 2 nights in Amsterdam, Hotel Leonard Boutiques city center, I was put in a single room for 2 nights. I compared my room with the single room posted at hotel websites. They were identical. Gate 1 Travel refused to refund me 2 nights of supplements. 2. I prepaid both hotel transfers. My inbound flight back to California was very early in the morning. In order to catch the boarding time of 8 am comfortably I requested to have hotel transfer at 4:00am. It took one hour driving from hotel to airport. The tour manager refused to reschedule from 5 am which he had scheduled to 4am. I had to call taxi and Gate 1 refused to reimburse me the taxi fare. 3. The day before departure We paid €32 to have Covid Rapid Antigen Test done at 8 am in hotel lobby. By 8:30 pm we had not received the QR code. We tried to locate the tour manager, we couldn’t fine him. We reached out hotel desk for further assistance. Hotel clerk had advised that the tour manager had (1) no hotel room (2) no email address on file (3) the cellphone number he posted on the bulletin board was non-working number, a fake number (4) he was no where to be found!

We just finished our 13 days tour to Israel and Jordan with Gate 1! it was AMAZING! We spent six days with Tsidki Yona in Israel. From Tel-Aviv, Caesarea, Upper Galilee, Golan Heights, Beit She’an, Jerusalem New City, Bethlehem, Masada to the Dead Sea. Tsidki was a great guide. His knowledge of history, geography, bible stories and the culture of the region enriched our experience of being there, by giving a context to the many places we visited that would have been missing without having him with us. His open, fun and kind personality made it easy to ask questions and always get more information back than we bargained for! not only exceptional in his knowledge of the history of Israel and its neighbors, including all the diverse cultures and political challenges, but he is also undeniably passionate about what he does. This was a really special experience for a non-Christian in the Holy Land! Following Israel, we spent six AWESOME days touring Jordan. The sites we visited were spectacular, the site of Jesus’s baptism by John the Baptist in Bethany, Petra, Kerak Castle, Little Petra, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Wadi Rum jeep Safari, to camel caravan expedition and Amman. Omar Bani Hani from Gate 1 was our OUTSTANDING guide as we traveled throughout Jordan. He felt like a member of the family to me, only one with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history, culture, politics, and geography of Jordan and surrounding countries. He was patient with our group of 27 and was able to instantly pivot our scheduled site visits to accommodate the inclement weather in the itinerary hence optimized our visit remarkably! His constant smile and humor brightened our trip every day. Omar was also a "one stop shop" from handling visa to Covid tests. He did it all seamlessly. Omar made our trip informative, safe, worry-free, and most of all enjoyable. He is an ASSET to Gate 1. We would definitely recommend Gate 1 for anyone traveling to Jordan. The hotels accommodation were all fine exceptions were the hotel in Tel Aviv (the hotel Metropolitan) and in Tiberias (Restal Hotel). both were in a great location but desperately needing renovations. All other accommodations: Holiday Inn Dead Sea, Old Village Hotel in Petra and Movenpick hotel in Amman are solid four star hotels. Last but not least, we made lifelong friends during this tour. It was a fabulous trip! it would earn five stars if not for the two hotel accommodations that were not at par with the tour.

If you ever thought about going to see Victoria Falls and go on safaris in southern Africa this is the time to go. Tours are just starting back up after COVID and tour sizes are smaller, which means more personal time with the guides and tour manager. We just returned from a 14 day (we added a day) trip to South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. We started in Johannesburg and went to Soweto and learned about Nelson Mandela and how Apartheid ended. We then traveled by air to Zambia, where we took a Sundowner cruise on the beautiful Zambezi River where we saw hippos, crocodiles, and other wildlife. Next day, we visited Victoria Falls on both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides of the Falls. It is impossible to capture in words how beautiful, majestic, and powerful the Falls are. They are so massive it is almost unbelievable. As an extra, my wife and I took a helicopter ride over the Falls, while a friend we made on the tour went horse back riding. Our accommodations in Livingstone were superb! We then went to Chobe National Park in Botswanan where we took a river boat ride and saw buffalo, hippos, impala, and elephants. The next morning we enjoyed a fantastic safari game drive through the national park. Our next major stop was to the Okavango Delta for game drives to see other animals. On this trip we saw individual and a journey of giraffes, lions, elephants, ostrich, antelope, zebra, hyena, impala, warthogs, and a large variety of birds. This time we stayed in permanent tents. What a fun adventure. These tents are like hotel rooms. They have indoor toilets and outside showers with plenty of warm water. They also had the most comfortable beds! From there, on to the beautiful and lively Cape Town, where we took a tram up Table Mountain, walk through the vibrant V & A shopping and entertainment center, spent a day visiting three wineries (on a double decker train), and spent a day traveling down the western coast where we saw South African penguins and took a Funicular to the old lighthouse perched up on a mountain. We are avid travelers, but this trip through Gate1 was truly one of the best adventures that we have been on. Our Tour Manager was Desire Pringle and we couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us. She is extremely knowledgeable about all of the areas that we travel to, the historic sites in each place, and wild game that we saw. She was extremely professional and friendly. She truly cared about our enjoyment and in getting a quality experience at every destination on the tour. She does an incredible job and should be requested if you take this tour.

Not worth it!

My husband and I have taken many trips with Gate 1 but something with the company has changed and I do not recommend travelling with them now. We travelled on their Japan, Then and Now Discovery trip in March and there were so many problems–some with the itinerary and some with the Tour Manager. Many of the activities were unnecessary or badly timed. I never got to see the “NOW” in Tokyo or any other city. Plenty of “Then” as we constantly travelled outside the cities to see gardens that weren’t blooming or another shrine that was never explained why it was important. The food on the trip was terrible, whether it was a group dinner or a food court in a train station. Some of the hotel rooms were so small there was no room to open a suitcase. It was a Discovery trip but nothing was special about it. It was a lot of money for what we got and we will not with travel with Gate 1 again.

RUDE service

This company has absolutely the most rude customer service. I'm a travel agent, asking basic clarifying questions regarding airfare and prices, and I was yelled out and treated very rudely two days in a row. They must hate their jobs. Unbelievable. Do not use this company! So many other professional travel companies to use!

We've had our guide yell at us and…

We've had our guide yell at us and other guests for little things like beings 4 minutes late one time over several days of being on time as expected, sitting somewhere other than the "assigned seating" even when there were vacant spaces, and for "just standing there" when out on a group outing (I guess we were supposed to interact more when he was watching us?). Our guide appears to be a tired and lonely old man that may need this position to support himself, as he wears the same outfit for the entire week so far & has no luggage. He rambles endlessly the entire duration of the ride in the tour bus about politics and religion with occasional spurts of local scenery, too late to get a photo of the attraction. I'd consider another Gate 1 travel but only after being able to review the ambassador of the trip. As for this trip, Serge was an absolute failure!

Tour guide can make or break a vacation.

Hawai'i 9-day tour 02/14/2024 thru 02/21/204 was busy and organized perfectly. Tours were organized and efficient. The preset hotels Queen Kapiolani and King Kamehameha were clean and well maintained. Due to the Lahaina devastation, which was hard to view, our hotel upgrade was amazing and impressive on Maui. Charles "Kaleo" Degala, the singing tour guide, made the trip. His love of his home, knowledge of the islands and respect for the culture of Aloha made you feel as if you were family not just a guest. Guides like him are a rare gift for a traveler.

Best trip ever!

I’ve traveled quite a bit and this trip to Costa Rica with Gate1 has been so far the best! This is the first time I book with them. It is very well organized, Gerardo, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and fun to travel with. The stay in Tortuguero was a great experience I will never forget. The Hot Springs was a beautiful place. The hotels that were chosen for us were terrific. The restaurants we were taken were fabulous. I will definitely book more trips with Gate1 without a doubt.

After reading all the negative reviews…

After reading all the negative reviews I decide to not go ahead and confirm the Baltic trip I had hoped to do with Gate 1 Travel. No way do I want to get stuck someplace with no help from the tour company. Glad I decided to read reviews before clicking the "Book" button.

Never had a problem

I was very surprised to see all the negative feedback. It is true that the Tour Manager makes all the difference on these kind of tours and ours have always been exceptional. We have done Italy, Spain, and SE Asia and have loved everyone of them. We are not old and feeble so maybe that has something to do with it because Gate1 does make sure you see everything on the itinerary and you get your monies worth, which what we like. Our last tour manager was Tim for the SE Asia trip and she was amazing, in fact we are still in touch because we have become friends. From our view they keep getting better and better and we would recommend Gate1 highly. PS ask for TIM if you go to SE Asia won't be disappointed.

Everything went exactly as we had hoped. Very smooth and easy flights and hotel check ins. Hotels were all very nice and met our expectations. All interactions I had with Gate 1 were very quick and helpful.

Gate 1 great but their trip insurance provider is worthless

Great company with well-organized tours but the insurance company they route all Travel Insurance through—Arch Insurance—has terrible reviews and does everything to avoid paying claims. I had a trip scheduled to Mexico in March 2024–and paid for. I had to cancel my Gate 1 trip because I was hospitalized for 11 days after I flew a long airplane flight from Ireland. At the time I booked the Gate 1 trip I was well. I suffered from acute pulmonary embolisms from the long flight. Arch insurance only paid out $300 on my well documented claim. I am a retired lawyer and know how to fill out and document claims. Their denial was flagrant. Getting only $300 back made it a complete waste of time to file the claim. If 11 days with acute pulmonary embolisms preventing me from future plane trips is not justification, what is? Never ever accept Arch. Find another provider.

Essential Portugal and Spain

Our experience was terrific! We were greeted at the airport by the tour manager Alex and taken to the hotel. Everything was so organized with time between tours for lunch or shopping. The hotels were nice too. We felt safe and cared for at all times. The tour guides were fantastic in each city giving us plenty of history without being boring. The bus driver Marco was excellent making sure our things were secured at all time. We will definitely use this tour company again.

Poor customer service leading to loss of ticket value

No possible to reach the travel agents on phone. Hence, communication to the Gate1 travel agents is possible via emails only. By 3pm UK time on 18 Feb, I confirmed my request to change my flight, from 19Feb at 1:45am to another day. But no response has been received, although my response was within 30-40min since the agent's reply time.. I appreciate this was on Sunday, but a clear statement on working hours and limitation from the beginning would be helpful. It seems the value of the ticket is lost which is very unpleasant. This could be easily avoided if there was an opportunity to call to agree the change and pay the diff in tariff.

Gate1 are uncaring ……After doing around 8 tours with Gate1 I…

After doing around 8 tours with Gate1 I unfortunately had to cancel over a month before we were commencing our tour due to having to have emergency surgery. I thought Gate1 might be understanding and give us a full refund or at least credit towards another trip. They would only refund half our money and yes that was in the cancellation policy but having been such a long term repeat customer who had recommended them to many, I was under the delusion they may have some understanding of my situation and refund the full amount or at least give credit towards my next trip. I am six months post surgery now and have booked this years tour with another company. Will never book with Gate1 again.

The 8 day Tour of Spain was well organized, good hotel rooms and services . Our tour guide Rosemary capably led some great tours. We took a two hours in Alhambra which for me was the highlight of this tour. The only issue for me was that the return flights were far too long. Madrid,Amsterdam,JFK and then to Toronto. I will consider future tours with Gate1

Very disappointed with Gate 1

Very disappointed with Gate 1. We’re scheduled to tour Egypt in November. However, due to the the conflict that’s happening now with Israel in Palastine/Gaza and the West Bank, we are justifiably concerned about our safety. Our trip is fully paid, but we had humbly requested to reschedule for a later date to travel (Not asking for a refund) just to reschedule. Unfortunately for us Gate1 outright denied our request disregarding our concerns. The Arch insurance that’s offered through Gate1 essentially only covers Gate1.

Travel Protection is a scam, thru Gate 1.…

Booked Christmas market trip for early Dec. Bought ‘Travel Protection’ that Gate 1 promotes. My travel partner needed a heart operation. Had to cancel trip. We’ve waited two months after providing info requested with letter from surgeon. Today they say coverage denied because she had defib prior. Of course the Protection was stated as covering pre-existing conditions!!!!!! Total rip-off. Deceptive scam artists. VERY disgusted!!!

Cancel for any reason doesn't really work.

We bought the cancel for any reason policy. We cancelled because we had to travel from NC to PA for my best friend's funeral. We were supposed to travel in October of 2023. So now we get a partial credit and a very small refund. Doesn't really do us any good because now it costs almost double for the same trip and we can't afford that. So we are basically out $1800 that we paid.

Great Company that delivers

After reading some of the negative reviews on Gate1 Travel, I decided to write. I’m a Canadian and have travelled with several other tour operators to dozens of countries and to all continents over the years and kept coming back to Gate 1. This company is of high standing, very professional with excellent customer service. I choose not to major on the nitty-gritty imperfections if any but focus on the important things that allows the tour to run smoothly like tour Manager top-notch communication skills, a good sense of humor, punctuality, and impeccable time management, contingency plans if a situation comes up and to arrange all travel related needs and wants from start to finish. I have travelled Gate 1 Classic (38 persons max) and small group discovery (22 persons max). The small group is well worth the extra money, hands down. We arrived home this week from Peru with the Amazon extension and will give it 5 stars. We had 4 internal flights and never had to worry about hauling our luggage. Checked luggage are always handled by Gate1, from hotel to airport (s) and then to final hotel room destination. This is a great benefit which I love. When possible, our tour Manager will have our boarding passes ready for airline check in ahead of time and our hotels check in process is a breeze. This can be a nightmare with some other tour operators (speaking from experience- yikes!). Another bonus, Gate 1 offers is great hotel accommodations in key locations where we can walk to restaurants/stores/attractions etc. Believe me, this can be a great benefit. It’s a treat after some long “tour and site seeing days” to come back to quality and nicer accommodations which is why my husband and I usually book pre and post stays at Gate 1 prices offered.

We truly appreciate your business and grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us. We hope to see you soon on another Gate 1 trip!

Thereza, our tour guide in Europe

Thereza, our tour guide on Gate One's trip from Mainz, Germany to Venice, Austria November 2023 was extremely accommodating. She was punctual while caring for specific needs of some 40 people for 10 days. She was very knowledgeable of the 5 countries that we toured and surprised us continually with gifts; nice hotels; meals and even music that we all sang along with as we traveled. She was fun and we'd recommend her highly for a trip with Gate One travels in your future!!!

Worst customer service

Worst customer service. I had booked a trip to Greece. I called them about my plane itinerary. No answer after being on hold for hours together. I emailed them, but no response whatsoever. I will never ever book anything with these people. Stay away from 'GATE1 TRAVEL". I 100% agree with majority negative reviews on this website. Please do yourself a favor and save yourself from tremendous future headache by not using this lousy travel company.

Dear Yash, We are sorry to learn of the delay in responding you your phone call. We were experiencing an increase in call volume related to our most recent promotion. We do value our customers and make every effort to answer calls as quickly as possible. Please be assured we will respond to your email, you may also request a call back using the call back feature. Thank you for your understanding.

Good experience with tour company

A tour by Gate 1 Travel called Discover Northern France that was booked for March 2024 was cancelled because of a lack of enough reservations to make this tour viable. A Customer Resolution Specialist for Gate 1, Donna Young, notified me that I could get a refund, Gate 1 travel credit, or book this tour later in the year at no additional cost. I chose to book this tour later in the year. Donna did an excellent job of offering me alternative dates and I chose a date in the fall 2024. I wish to thank Gate 1 for the options offered to me and to Donna for the superb job in booking an alternative tour date.

This Iconic London Neighborhood Has a New Chic Hotel — and It's Surrounded by Royal Parks, World-famous Museums, and Gorgeous Galleries

Filled with lush greenery, reclaimed wood, and other sustainable touches, 1 Hotel Mayfair is the brand's first foray into Europe.

Food and Drink

Activities and experiences, accessibility and sustainability, family-friendly offerings, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Mikkel Vang/Courtesy of 1 Hotel Mayfair

At 1 Hotel Mayfair you don’t check in to a hotel: You enter a world of consciously sourced furniture, calm, mindful spaces, and reused plastic art installations, all creatively re-conceptualized into an oasis mother nature would be proud of.

While this retreat offers filtered water stations in every room, a restaurant that boasts a chef with a Michelin-starred pedigree, and a location to die for, it’s little things like the efficient irrigation nourishing the living walls and the state-of-the-art clean energy systems that will keep you returning. It’s the journey of sustainability and the hotel's dedication to living well that ultimately invites you in. (And with more than 1,300 plants dotted throughout, your green-fingered alter ego will be itching for a look inside.)

Jon Day/Courtesy of 1 Hotel Mayfair

Step off London’s bustling Berkeley Street and into a reception entrance where you are immediately shielded under a living, breathing chandelier — or rather, a sprawling dome canopy of rainforest moss. Almost impossible to miss, this installation by Patrick Nadeau welcomes you in from the city to "reset" in nature and is a stunning indicator of things to come.

“This is evocative of the 1 Hotel Mayfair message,” explains Micheal Blin, director of sales, as he walks us towards a 200-year-old oak tree, a naturally fallen, locally sourced tree that's been given a second life as a stunning bark-fronted reception desk. Between the chandelier and the check-in desk, I realize this is the most nature-inspired hotel I’ve ever entered.

Blin tells us about the 1 Hotel motto: "One world, one planet, and one hotel." I take this opportunity to ask about the large sculpture hanging proudly on the coffee shop wall, a vivid centerpiece that has repeatedly caught my attention since my arrival. I knew it had to be meaningful, and I was right: It reflects our solar system and the global concerns surrounding climate change and ocean pollution.

Blin explains that artist Steve McPherson created this work from unaltered marine plastics he collected from the U.K.’s North Kent beaches. I take a moment to consider washed-up waste as art, and at that moment, I’m reminded of the beauty we can find in repurposed objects.

It soon became apparent that our stay here would entail plenty of carefully curated moments inviting us to connect with and reflect on our planet. Read on for our full review of the 1 Hotel Mayfair.

When you enter the Skyline One-Bedroom Suite, you are immediately wrapped in its serenity.

The 430-square-foot suite is lit by natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows with only a hint of the city beyond. The suite effortlessly moves you from the entrance area with handcrafted furniture to cozy corner seating and a private skyline view of Mayfair. Living walls reminiscent of carpeted forests surround the custom-designed filtered water station, with deep timber hues enhancing the biophilic design. Your fingers are drawn to brush along every surface, called by the tactile nature of the materials.

The contemporary, organic design continues with earthy tones leading into a large freestanding bath and spacious walk-in rain shower, complete with a large slate vanity. The level of care and attention is evident, from the wooden disk room keys to the seeded note paper, which can be taken home and planted. (This is also one of the quietest city suites I’ve ever experienced, with city noise entirely absorbed by your little sanctuary.)

There are 181 rooms, all equipped with a filtered water tap, Nespresso machine, and sustainably sourced bedding. The most luxurious offering is the three-bedroom Green Park Penthouse (Mayfair’s largest). This luxury 2,900-square-foot space includes panoramic views of Green Park and beyond. Like the suites, double-height floor-to-ceiling windows flood the open-plan living and entertainment area with natural light. A two-sided fireplace provides the centerpiece, surrounded by a tree stump bar and raw timber dining table. The whole area is wrapped in your own private terrace, a bird's eye view to watch the world go by. The suite is completed with a walk-in, sunken tiger stone bathtub (with more skyline views), a double-headed rain shower, and two personal saunas for ultimate relaxation. It's truly the height of mindful, organic luxury.

The Dovetale restaurant and terrace, led by celebrated chef Tom Sellers, whose London restaurant Story earned its second Michelin star in 2021, offers a twist on European classics and spotlights seasonal, locally sourced, organic ingredients. Produce is selected from the finest regional partners, including local darlings, seafood purveyor The Sea, The Sea, and well-regarded butcher HG Walter. With such excellent raw ingredients, the expectations are high, and Dovetale does not disappoint.

The hotel’s green design philosophy permeates every detail. Lush tropical plants and rattan screens give an almost alfresco, Hemingway-esque feel, while softwood beams channel Scandinavia, coupled with mid-century chairs and velvet cushioning in calming olive greens. Light floods in from skylights like a rainforest canopy, and there is no better setting for an energizing breakfast.

At night, the copper-topped fire, soft lighting, and discreet booth seating create a deeper, more intimate atmosphere to spotlight the culinary experience. We had the pleasure of sampling the Valentine's Day menu, opening with Billecart-Salmon Brut NV Champagne and Carlingford oysters, followed by a buttery, decadent Cornish crab linguine, so heavenly light it felt almost sinless.

The Dovetale is famed for its nostalgic Knickerbocker Glory ice cream trolley, which offers a selection of flavors — from raspberry ripple to birthday cake — and rich sauces, including spiced rum and a variety of toppings from marshmallows to candied pecans. We just about squeezed in a bespoke Valentine's edition, The Lovebocker.

Dover Yard is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner aperitif, post-dinner nightcap, or anything in between, offering classic and signature cocktails made from responsibly sourced and repurposed ingredients. The natural and tactile materials create a sophisticated, organic inner-city refuge with a Yorkshire stone fireplace and tree-trunk tabletops.

The menu features the signature Rookie Bramble, which embodies the sustainable ethos, using lemon sour mash house-made from leftover lemons in Sellers' kitchen. For those preferring a more traditional tipple, the wine list offers an ample selection of 14 wines by the glass and beer by the bottle from locally sourced producers Toast and Hepworth.

It will come as no surprise to learn that your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being is at the center of things to do when staying at 1 Hotel.  A schedule of botanical, sustainable, nature-driven "happenings" is released each month to help you reset and unwind. From a tree tapestry tour to sound healing, social hour to terrarium Tuesdays — there’s an eclectic mix of experiences to keep you engaged and connected. "We'd rather focus on something people can learn,'' Blin explained, “our experiences are unique to our location, building, and sustainability ethos."

For the simple joy of running, 1 Mayfair Running Club hit the parks every Friday afternoon. Even better, some fitness classes, such as yoga and breathwork, are complimentary, so be sure to check what's available with your concierge.

In partnership with external health providers, 1 Hotel prioritizes your personal well-being. Residents staying at the hotel are invited to take full advantage of the Bamford Wellness Spa and 24-hour gym. For one-on-one training, you can access sessions with some of London's best personal trainers. But, if you get the chance, enquire about training with Shona Vertue, a renowned international leader in fitness and yoga. Fitness enthusiasts, you do not want to miss out on this collaboration — I did, and I’m still crying about it.

Saying all that, if you'd prefer to take it easy, schedule a sauna blanket; they're specially designed to bring comfort to you, and you don't even have to leave your room.

A flagship hotel for sustainable hospitality, 1 Hotel Mayfair is leading the way in London as one of the first to unite luxury with ethical and responsible practices. Answering the call to action to protect our planet, the hotel is on a mission to offset its carbon emissions by investing vast amounts in materials that give back.

"We believe people thrive better when they are surrounded by organic materials. Natural spaces and clean air build you up for success," Blin told us. "In the design, we want to ensure that natural plants are the roots of the design; they’re the DNA of the hotel.”

Through waste management tracking and monthly reports, 90 percent of waste is sorted, weighed, and diverted. This urban oasis uses 50 percent less energy to light up its room than the standard hotel and uses regenerative practices to ensure a zero-waste dinner and cocktail offering.

Each floor is fully accessible with its own bathroom and wide entryways. There are nine accessible rooms for wheelchair access and comfortable, spacious use throughout.

One of the perks of choosing 1 Hotel Mayfair is the hotel's global partnership with Audi. On a first-reserved basis, guests can hop into the hotel's official electric vehicle and travel in style — and sustainably — to Buckingham Palace, the West End, or any other desired landmark.  It's complimentary and bookable via the concierge.

We didn't stay with kids or pets, but I had it under good authority that both were welcome and encouraged. With interconnecting rooms, free ice cream in the restaurant for youngsters, and fun tents available for hire, bringing signature home comforts to you is all part of the experience.

The hotel is set in the heart of Mayfair, a district known universally for being the most expensive property on the Monopoly board. Surrounded by the West End, flagship stores, and fine dining, it's easily one of the world's most desirable postcodes.

Guests can take advantage of the major perks situated on their doorstep. For starters, Berkeley Square is an energized hub close by, with Piccadilly Circus, New Bond Street, and Knightsbridge only a 10-minute walk away. Both Harrods and St James's are in easy walking distance, and for something a bit out of the ordinary, head to Mercato Mayfair, a restored Grade I listed church, perched on North Audley Street. Here, you’ll be greeted with gentle jazz, floral smells, and a two-tier food hall that serves up sustainable, authentic food from around the world. On entrance, look up — light plays beautifully through the stained glass windows, casting shadows that rest peacefully around the stone arches.

When your itinerary calls for activities further afield, hop on London's underground. The Green Park tube station will connect you to most places and cannot be more conveniently located - it’s less than a minute's walk away.

Rooms start around $550 per night, with unique packages and seasonal offers available throughout the year. Extras such as daily breakfast and in-room credit can be claimed when booking via the website.  We stayed in a Skyline One-Bedroom Suite, which included a dedicated service team, hotel credit, and daily breakfast. Our room was spacious, with a separate living room and rain shower. Our suite was around $1,800 per night for our February stay; however, there are often 20 percent off offers with pay-later options.

The Mirage, Vegas' first true 'megaresort,' to close permanently after 34 years

T he Las Vegas Strip hotel that ushered in the era of megaresorts is closing permanently on July 17. The Mirage is slated to become the Hard Rock Las Vegas when it reopens after extensive renovations.

At the time of its opening in November 1989, the $630 million construction cost was one of the highest in history for any hotel, and its 3,000-plus rooms made it one of the largest on Earth.

The hotel was a veritable zoo with tigers, lagoons, waterfalls and aquariums. Outside, a giant piña colada-scented volcano erupted every 15 minutes. In the first few hours of opening day, 120,000 people poured through the doors, forcing the Mirage to restrict visitors because “guests could hardly move about the property,” the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

The resort was a huge gamble for developer Steve Wynn, with many industry insiders at the time predicting his ambitious project would flop. It didn’t. Instead, its success encouraged a boom of similarly gargantuan resorts like Luxor, Excalibur, the Bellagio and Mandalay Bay, among others, in the 1990s. It was also home to one of Vegas’ most legendary acts: Siegfried and Roy, who performed there from the early 1990s until Roy Horn was injured by a tiger during a performance in 2003.

In 2022, Hard Rock International purchased the Mirage for $1 billion. Part of the new plan involves adding a guitar-shaped hotel tower on the footprint of the Mirage’s iconic volcano. The new Hard Rock hotel is expected to open in May 2027.

“Over the next two months we will bid farewell to this iconic and historic property and then we will commence an incredible transformation,” the hotel said in a statement .

CNN reports that 3,000 Mirage employees will be laid off in July. The Culinary Workers Union, which represents 1,700 Mirage employees, said in a statement that laid-off workers will receive “either a service recognition bonus of $2,000 for every year of service, plus 6 months of pension and health benefits or a lesser amount while maintaining seniority rights for the duration of the property’s closure and 36-months of recall rights.”

Best Hotel In Chicago: JW Marriott, Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons Or Park Hyatt

1. Best Location: JW Marriott Vs. Ritz Carlton Vs. Four Seasons Vs. Park Hyatt

2. style & character, 4. club lounge, 6. conclusion.

Can’t decide where to stay in Chicago? We help you decide between the JW Marriott Vs. Ritz Carlton Vs. Four Seasons Vs. Park Hyatt for your next stay in the windy city!

The Four Seasons Hotel Chicago enjoys a prime location in the heart of Chicago’s bustling Magnificent Mile, renowned for its upscale shopping, dining, and cultural attractions. The hotel is situated along Michigan Avenue and offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and easy access to iconic landmarks such as Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The Magnificent Mile is also home to an array of high-end boutiques, department stores, art galleries, and restaurants, making it a vibrant and dynamic area for both tourists and locals alike.

The Ritz-Carlton Chicago is located in the upscale Gold Coast neighborhood, just steps away from the Magnificent Mile. Nestled along Michigan Avenue and Water Tower Place, the hotel offers a more tranquil and refined atmosphere than the Magnificent Mile’s bustling energy. Guests staying at The Ritz-Carlton Chicago can easily access nearby attractions such as the John Hancock Center, Oak Street Beach, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Gold Coast neighborhood is known for its historic architecture, tree-lined streets, and exclusive boutiques, creating an elegant and sophisticated ambiance.

JW Marriott Chicago is situated in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant downtown and is a huge and fairly impersonal hotel. This JW Marriott offers easy access to the city’s iconic landmarks, including Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Magnificent Mile shopping district. It’s an ideal location for both business and leisure travelers looking to explore the city’s attractions and cultural offerings.

Park Hyatt Chicago is nestled in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. Park Hyatt Chicago offers a prime location for shopping enthusiasts and cultural explorers. Guests can stroll along Michigan Avenue, shop at luxury boutiques, visit museums and galleries, and dine at world-class restaurants, all within walking distance of the hotel.

Ultimately, the best location for you depends on your preferences and what you plan to do during your stay in Chicago. We like the locations of the Four Seasons and Park Hyatt in Chicago best as they are central to the magnificent mile.

Ritz-Carlton Vs Four Seasons. Which Is Best?

Ritz-Carlton Vs Four Seasons. Which Is Best?

Recommended Post In "Tips"

Which is best, Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons? While the choice between these two hotel brands varies between individual hotels, Four Seasons hotels are generally more service-oriented and individual. Ritz-Carlton has adopted a more generic mentality in its service and decor to fit the Marriott brand. That said, both portfolios have exceptional properties, so let's break the comparison down into the different parts of the hotel to compare the two brands. Four Seasons offers a variety of styles across their hotels according to the destination and the property itself.

The Four Seasons exudes a contemporary elegance by blending modern sophistication with subtle hints of local charm. Its design highlights sleek lines, neutral color schemes, and luxurious materials like marble and fine wood, creating a serene and stylish ambiance.

Renowned for its personalized approach, The Four Seasons ensures that every guest feels individually attended to. Meticulous attention to detail reflects a fusion of professionalism and warmth, while the hotel’s amenities, including top-tier dining and spa facilities, are meticulously designed to offer a seamless and indulgent experience, seamlessly merging comfort with contemporary luxury.

In contrast, The Ritz-Carlton Chicago embraces a classic and grandiose style, evoking a timeless sense of luxury and refined elegance. Rich fabrics, ornate chandeliers, and sophisticated color schemes featuring deep hues and gold accents create a luxurious ambiance.

The service at The Ritz-Carlton reflects a more formal and stately approach, rooted in a heritage of luxury hospitality that prioritizes discretion and excellence. Its amenities, including the lavish spa and gourmet restaurants, are meticulously crafted to provide a sumptuous and majestic experience, ensuring that every aspect of a guest’s stay exudes an aura of exclusivity and grandeur.

The Park Hyatt is a beautiful boutique property in Chicago. Its rooms are modern and stylish, and the hotel feels very luxurious. We love this hotel, and it comes in a close second behind the Four Seasons Chicago, in our opinion.

The JW Marriott Chicago has 610 well-appointed guest rooms, including 30 spacious suites. JW Marriott Chicago’s guest rooms are inspired by the iconic Pullman luxury rail car with concepts that transport guests to a bygone era. Sleep in comfort with a king or two queen beds accompanied by an in-room refrigerator, coffee/tea maker and safe coupled with double-paned windows for a peaceful night’s sleep. To be honest, the rooms at the JW Marriott are fairly uninspiring, although they have decent-sized windows (not floor to ceiling though) which let in lots of light. Of these four hotels, the JW Marriott has my least favorite rooms.

The Park Hyatt Chicago is fairly boutique in size, with just 146 reimagined guestrooms and 36 suites, offering a residential oasis in the heart of downtown Chicago’s Gold Coast. Located on Michigan Avenue, our hotel offers sweeping views of Lake Michigan and Chicago Avenue through expansive triple-pane windows and spa-inspired bathrooms featuring dual vanities and lavish Le Labo® amenities. These rooms are modern and bright, with wooden floors and cappuccino or late coloured rugs. These and the Four Seasons rooms are our favorite rooms in Chicago.

The Four Seasons has an excellent spa, fitness center, and indoor pool. The Park Hyatt also has an excellent spa, gym, and lap pool with great views across Chicago. The JW Marriott has a pool, but it does not have nice windows with views, so is not a great pool. It also has fitness and spa facilities. The Ritz-Carlton Chicago has a gym and a spa but no pool. The Four Seasons and the Park Hyatt are the ones to pick if you want a gorgeous pool.

The rooms at the Four Seasons Chicago epitomize modern luxury, focusing on contemporary design and understated elegance. Each room features ahetic, minimalist aest with a neutral color palette complemented by high-end materials like marble and fine wood. Large windows provide abundant natural light and stunning views of the city or Lake Michigan, creating a serene and airy atmosphere.

The rooms have state-of-the-art technology, including flat-screen televisions, high-speed internet, and user-friendly climate control systems. Plush bedding, spacious bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, and thoughtful amenities like Nespresso machines and premium toiletries ensure a comfortable and indulgent stay. The overall vibe is one of sleek sophistication, perfect for travelers who appreciate modern comfort and refined simplicity.

The rooms at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago embody a classic and opulent style, blending traditional elegance with luxurious comfort. The décor features rich fabrics, deep colors, and ornate furnishings that exude a sense of timeless grandeur. Large, plush beds with high-thread-count linens, expansive marble bathrooms with soaking tubs and separate showers, and spacious layouts provide a sense of indulgent luxury.

Many rooms offer sweeping views of the city or the lake, framed by elegant drapery and detailed woodwork. Modern amenities are seamlessly integrated into the classic design, with advanced technology for entertainment and comfort discreetly incorporated. The ambiance is one of refined sophistication, appealing to guests who prefer a more traditional and lavish setting that emphasizes grandeur and classic charm.

Best Executive Or Club Lounges In Chicago Hotels

Best Executive Or Club Lounges In Chicago Hotels

This article outlines the hotels in Chicago that offer guests club or executive lounges. By reviewing each club or executive lounges, I conclude which hotel has the best club lounge in Chicago. When deciding which hotel to choose for your stay in a city like Chicago, it is sensible to consider the added extras provided by a hotel club lounge. Offerings usually include complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the day, breakfast in the morning, and evening cocktails with canapés. Annoyingly, in Chicago, very few club lounges offer free alcoholic drinks.

The Ritz-Carlton has a decent-sized but exclusive executive club lounge. This is one of the best club lounges in Chicago and is decorated in blue and brown hues. The food and beverage offering is exceptional and has five offerings each day.

The JW Marriott has a small club lounge, which is nice but not as impressive as the club lounge at the Ritz-Carlton. In this lounge, you can enjoy a breakfast spread and delight in delectable snacks and beverages throughout your stay. Treat your taste buds on weekday evenings to sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and desserts. You’ll also have exclusive access to a sophisticated private workspace where you can work in comfort and privacy.

The Four Seasons and Park Hyatt hotels do not have club lounges.

Usually, the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott are less expensive than the Four Seasons and the Park Hyatt, although if you book their club rooms, the Ritz-Carlton is more expensive. Overall, the JW Marriott is usually the cheapest of these four hotels.

Book any of these three hotels via our luxury travel concierge to get a better deal. You will get free breakfast along with priority room upgrades and hotel credit if you book with us.

We love the modern and minimalist style of the Four Seasons and Park Hyatt. These are both hotels that will make you feel special, and both have great wellness facilities and pools. However, if you’re looking for more traditional decor and a great club lounge, pick the Ritz-Carlton. The JW Marriott is our least favorite of these hotels as its rooms are generic and dingy, and its pool is not great. It does have a club lounge but it is not particularly special and overall this hotel is large and impersonal.

All aboard the Red Caboose Motel and Restaurant

Localish logo

RONKS, Pennsylvania -- At the Red Caboose Motel and Restaurant, guests can experience a motel stay in an old-fashioned caboose.

There are 48 rooms on-site within 19 cabooses that have been renovated into suites that can accommodate up to six people.

The motel's story began in 1969, when founder Donald M. Denlinger placed a bet on 19 cabooses from the Pennsylvania Railroad.

After unexpectedly winning the bet, he found a place for each train car right by the historic Strasburg Rail Road.

The Red Caboose Motel grand opening was a year later and it is still considered one of the most unique tourist attractions in both Lancaster County and the United States.

In 2016, the motel was bought by Todd and Tyler Prickett alongside their wives Debra and Katheirne, to continue the legacy of this iconic concept.

There are also dining options at the Casey Jones Restaurant which is open to guests as well as the public.

The restaurant allows you to eat in a real train car, adding to the unique experience throughout the property.
