A flurry of rockets will launch from Florida's Space Coast this year. How to watch Friday

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the location of rocket launches this year.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. − Two more rocket launches are on the horizon again this week in Florida.

On Friday, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying Starlink internet satellites will launch just before 6:45 p.m. You can watch live coverage starting 90 minutes before liftoff at  floridatoday.com/space .

On Saturday, Boeing's Starliner will depart with NASA astronauts bound for the International Space Station. The launch is currently slated for 12:25 p.m., and backup opportunities exist on Sunday. Should Starliner not be able to launch this weekend, additional opportunities exist on Wednesday and Thursday. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams  have been in health quarantine preparing for the flight.

Forty rockets have launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center so far this year, putting Florida’s Space Coast on track to break last year’s freshly established annual record of 72 orbital rocket launches.

Most of the rockets are SpaceX, and the rest are NASA and United Launch Alliance, an aerospace and defense company.

As more SpaceX rockets take off from Florida this year, and at a faster pace, the launches have interrupted some events. In March, live coverage of a New York Mets spring training game was momentarily disrupted when announcers were awed by the sight of  a SpaceX rocket thundering over  the Florida ballpark.

What is Starlink?

More than 70 countries can now access Starlink high-speed internet service, and the constellation of the network's satellites in low-Earth orbit continues to grow.

The low-cost, high-speed internet allows people to connect online in RVs or campers in remote places, and from boats in the ocean, according to the company's website.

A Starlink satellite can last for approximately five years, according to NasaSpaceFlights.com , and SpaceX has been launching them since 2019.

Where to watch rocket launches this year

This Friday and Saturday, depending on cloud cover and the weather, all of Brevard County and the Space Coast should get a great view of the rocket liftoffs once again. Here are some of the top viewing spots we recommend:

Pretty much anywhere  in Brevard, you'll get a view of the rocket  launch. The best view to watch a rocket launch from the Space Coast is along the beach. However, visibility will depend on weather conditions and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches.

If you are viewing the launch along the Indian River in Titusville from Space View Park or Parrish Park, look east directly across the river.

If you are farther south along the Indian River, look northeast.

Playalinda Beach or Canaveral National Seashore is the closest spot to view liftoff because it is almost parallel to Launch Pad 39A. On the beach, look south along the coastline, (you can even see the pad from some spots).

Some hotspots to check out:

  • Jetty Park Beach and Pier , 400 Jetty Park Road,  Port Canaveral . Note, there's a charge to park.
  • Playalinda Beach , 1000 Playalinda Beach Road, Canaveral National Seashore. Note, there's a charge to park, and access to Canaveral National Seashore isn't always granted depending on capacity and time of day.

The Melbourne Rebels will not continue in 2025 after Rugby Australia rejected a bit to keep them alive

After months of uncertainty the final call has been made on the debt-riddled Melbourne Rebels with their future decided with a stern message about how poorly the club was run.

Melbourne Rebels officials declared it was a “sad day” and a court battle looms after Rugby Australia rejected an application from a consortium seeking to take over the embattled club choosing instead to shut it down after 14 seasons.

The news was delivered to staff and players on Thursday morning, as the club prepares for a first ever Super Rugby finals appearance and RA chair Daniel Herbert said those upset member of the Rebels board, including some who were part of the resurrection consortium, had “let rugby stakeholders down in Victoria” through poor financial management of the club.

“And while this is not a crack at people individually, they are people who love rugby, we are now six years away from when Rugby Australia paid $13.8 million towards Rebels debts back in 2017 and gave an additional $6 million of funding,” Herbert said as the lack of financial viability of the consortium’s proposal, and a lack of detail, was revealed as the key reasons for RA’s decision to shutter the club.

“There’s been tens of millions of dollars that has been spent on this franchise over and above other Super Rugby clubs, and (now it’s) to be $23 million in debt again.

“I think they have let rugby stakeholders down in Victoria and rugby stakeholders more broadly.”

The Rebels were placed in administration in January this year with debts owed to creditors exceeding $23 million and any rescue plans were abandoned with players contracted beyond this season to have their deals paid out, with clubs in Japan, Europe and even the NRL set to pounced on the likes of superstar Taniela Tupou.

RA boss Phil Waugh said the consortium led by business heavyweight Leigh Clifford who put forward a plan to fund the club until 2030 failed to provide any substantial detail, with Herbert calling it “embryonic” and “very underdeveloped”.

“I was very clear when the Rebels went into voluntary administration that we would make a decision as quickly as we could with all the appropriate information,” Waugh said

“We received that information last week and had a presentation this week and we then analysed all of the information and we made the decision as quickly as we could to give certainty to players and staff.

“RA does not take this decision lightly, however it must act in the best interests of the game and its stakeholders, and to provide certainty for the Rebels’ players and staff, and all Super Rugby clubs in planning for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.

“Given the lack of detail made available to RA, the lack of transparency and the significant doubts over the Consortium’s proposed financial model, RA has determined that there is an unacceptable level of risk associated with entering into a Participation Agreement with this Consortium for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.”

Waugh, said they remained committed to having a strong rugby presence in Victoria and would now focus on “supporting the impacted staff and players at the Rebels”.

“It has been a testament to the players, coaches, team management and support staff that they have managed to deliver such a competitive season on the field in extremely difficult circumstances – and we are looking forward to seeing the team fighting in the Finals for the first time ever,” Waugh said.

“I want to thank the Rugby community for its patience and ongoing support of the code. Rugby Australia’s focus right now is on supporting the impacted staff and players at the Rebels.”

The man behind the failed consortium, Leigh Clifford, suggested there could yet be a court battle to resolve the matter.

“The Melbourne Rebels never want to go to court, but Rugby Australia’s actions to turn their backs and not negotiate on a common sense $18 million rescue plan has left the Club no choice,” he said.

All club staff, including coach Kevin Foote, will be without a job when the Rebels’ season ends, which is likely to be in two games time, pending what would be considered a miraculous finals wins given the situation now facing players.

RA and the Rugby Union Players Association (RUPA) still discussing options for player movement within Australian rugby.

But players who were contracted to the Rebels through to the end of 2025, including the likes of Wallabies star Tupou, have the option of playing overseas with their contracts now void.

The Rebels will play their final regular season game against the Fijian Drua on Saturday in Fiji having already secured a maiden finals spot despite the tumultuous events of 2024. .

After months of uncertainty the final call has been made on the debt-riddled Melbourne Rebels with their future decided.

Regardless of where the Reds and the Waratahs are placed on the ladder, whenever they meet, it’s the ‘most important game in the calendar for Australian rugby’, according to Queensland coach Les Kiss.

When Maurice Longbottom steps foot on the field at the Paris Olympics, his boots will tell the story of his journey from feeling shame about his heritage, to proudly displaying it to the world.

A woman who won a free Virgin Voyages cruise said she would have to spend $8,000 on flights to claim the prize

  • An Australian woman who won a cruise said she would have to pay thousands of dollars to redeem it.
  • Her Virgin Voyages cruise was canceled due to Red Sea tensions, forcing her to rebook.
  • The cruise line offered Europe or Caribbean trips, but she said flights were too expensive.

Insider Today

An Australian woman who won a Virgin Voyages cruise said she and her partner would have to pay a combined $8,000 for flights due to a change in the ship's itinerary.

The woman, who spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) under the pseudonym Morgan, said the flights to the cruise ports are more expensive than the value of the adults-only cruise .

Morgan said she was traveling on a Virgin Airlines flight from Melbourne to her home in Tasmania in November when the passengers on board were told they had won a cruise.

In a video shared to Virgin Voyages' Instagram account in November, a flight attendant FaceTimed with Virgin founder Richard Branson to announce the prize.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Virgin Australia (@virginaustralia)

"I am pleased to gift each adult on board a free Virgin Voyages cruise," Branson said.

The video showed passengers excitedly cheering as flight attendants handed out cruise vouchers.

It is not known if this video is from the same flight that Morgan was on.

Morgan's voucher was for a twin-share cruise out of Australia or New Zealand on the cruise line's newest ship, Resilient Lady , which debuted in May 2023, as shown in a photo of the voucher published by ABC.

Morgan said she was initially "thrilled" as she and her partner used the twin-share voucher to book a cruise out of Brisbane. However, in February, the cruise line announced its upcoming Australia voyages were canceled due to tensions in the Red Sea, according to ABC and The Independent .

As a result, Morgan was told her only option was to redeem her voucher for a Europe or Caribbean voyage — which could cost thousands in flights.

Virgin Voyages has various Caribbean itineraries sailing out of San Juan and Miami, with ports in Tortola, Basseterre, St. John's, Fort-de-France, Castries, Kingstown, and Philipsburg.

Related stories

Morgan said two return flights from her home to the Caribbean would cost $8,000, which is more than the $7,000 value on the cruise voucher.

"When I clarified this with Virgin's PR team they stopped responding," she said.

ABC did not provide the dates and details of the flights Morgan referred to.

According to return flights on Skyscanner viewed by Business Insider, travel from Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, to San Juan can take up to 46 hours across multiple flights.

Prices for return flights varied throughout 2024 and 2025, with the most expensive being just over $2,500.

Virgin Voyages' Europe cruises have itineraries in Ireland, Scotland, and the Mediterranean. Similarly, travel from Hobart to Portsmouth, a cruise port in England, can take up to 44 hours across multiple flights.

BI viewed return flights from Hobart to Portsmouth as costing more than $1,200 on multiple dates throughout 2024.

"We were genuinely shocked, we thought Virgin would provide us with an alternative prize like a flight credit… or they would allow us to rebook on a later season," Morgan said.

"They sort of gave up on us … like 'you're a bit of a problem now,'" she said.

The cruise line's brand could be at risk, says marketing expert

"We apologise to our winners who can no longer redeem their prize due to the cancellation of Virgin Voyages' Australian and New Zealand cruises amid the conflict in the Red Sea," a spokesperson for Virgin Australia Group said in a statement obtained by BI.

They added that "safety is always our number-one priority" and that Virgin Voyages had offered all impacted guests complimentary cruises on its other international sailings.

Balkrushna Potdar, a marketing lecturer at the University of Tasmania, told ABC that Morgan's story could potentially damage Virgin Voyages' brand. The company could gain a reputation for using untrustworthy marketing tactics, Potdar said.

Potdar said the company could make things right by "covering the cost of flights to Europe or the Caribbean."

Virgin Voyages has been widely celebrated for its child-free cruises, which cater to millennial travelers . The company's first ship, Scarlet Lady, set sail in 2021 after being delayed due to the pandemic.

In September 2023, Virgin Voyages announced it had secured $550 million in funding managed by the Private Equity Group of Ares Management.

The funding will be used to enable the cruise line to support the brand's "rapid expansion into international markets, with a relentless focus on creating an outstanding and innovative customer experience," according to a press release.
