A Complete Guide to Torna Fort Trek

Torna Fort is the highest hill-fort in the Pune District. Situated at an altitude of 4,603 ft from sea level, it stands out among other forts in the western ghats of Maharashtra.

Because of the massive size of the fort, it is also called Prachandagad. This name is derived from Marathi which means Prachanda – massive and gad – a fort.

Torna fort was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 when he was 16 years old. This is where the core of the Maratha empire was built. It has a great history as it has gone under many rulers.

In the 17th Century, the Mughal empire shortly gained control of the fort after Shivaji’s son Sambhaji got killed. The fort was renamed later by Aurangazeb (6th Mughal Emperor) as  Futulgaib  in recognition of the difficult battle of the Torna fort between Mughals and Marathas.

Trek to the Torna fort unfolds many exciting things. You trek along the beautiful flower beds, on the top, there are temples, water cisterns, Balekilla, 2 magnificent Machis, Zunjar Machi, and Budhla Machi, and a ridge connecting to Rajgad fort.

As stated by James Douglas “If Sinhagad is a Lion’s cave then Torna is an eagle’s nest, this fort truly stands for what his words.

The initial trail from the police station has a tar road. Continue on the same road until you reach a small bridge. After 5 minutes of a walk from here, you see a trail on your left moving towards the direction of the fort. This is where the actual trek begins.

| Note:  If you follow the cement road on your right, it directly takes you to the plateau where one can park the two-wheeler. This is recommended only if you are trekking in summer. The trekking trail from starting point to the plateau is a beautiful trail with many colorful flowers and small water streams. One has to trek through this setting.

There are few historical places that are in ruins to see on this machi.

As you enter the Budhla machi through Konkan Darwaja you see Hattimaal buruj.

You descend down to the Hattimaal Buruj. There are rock-cut steps and railings are given for trekkers’ safety. This is one of the toughest sections. Negotiate it carefully.

Pro Tip: If you are trekking in monsoon season, Carry 30 to 40 ft rope along with you. This would help you negotiate the above-mentioned section.

This Radtondi Buruj has Chor Darwaja(Opening of Radtondi side) that leads to the Ridge of Torna-Rajgad fort. This section is very steep and a metal ladder is kept to descend down. This is also one of the toughest sections to negotiate. You proceed further only if you are going to cover Rajgad fort.

Pro Tip: The Ridge walk to the Rajgad fort is very beautiful. We recommend you to do both Torna and  Rajgad  together.

The right trail from the pinnacle takes you to the end of the Budhla machi. The end of Budhla machi is called as Cheetah Darwaja. You get one of the best views from that end.

Spend some time enjoying nature. Spot some of the famous forts like Rajgad, Raigad, Lingana and many more from there. It is always fun to identify peaks and forts if you are in a group of friends!

The descent is the same as you climbed up. From Budhla Machi get back to Mengai Devi temple. You can rest here for a while. From there follow the trail towards Kothi Darwaja, and to Velhe village.

➤ How To Get Fit For Torna Fort Trek

The Torna Fort trek is classified as a  Moderate  grade trek. From the base, you will gain approximately 2,500 feet in altitude in a day.

The high altitude gain and the rolling ascents and descents can be demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a moderate grade trek:

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks.

➤ Cardiovascular Endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace every day in the following manner –

  • Target completing a jog of 5 km in 40 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by running 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce another day of running in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you run in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 35 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 18 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 25 km in one hour.

➤ Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength:

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set.

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

➤ Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however-light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here’s a video you can use to work out indoors.

Torna Fort In Pune Is A Great Option For Trekking Enthusiasts

Photo of Aashish Chawla

“If Sinhgad is a cave then Torna is eagle’s nest"

This statement by James Douglas was the start point which set the ball rolling and propelled me for the trek to Torna Fort .

Torna was the first fort won by Shivaji at the age of only 16 years ! ( I am wondering what I was doing when I was 16 ..Most probably must be chasing girls in college!) I think seeing this huge fort must have prompted Shivaji to name it Prachandgad.(The Huge One)

Another very noteworthy thing about this fort is that it is one of the highest Fort (1405mts) in Pune District.

Most trekkers like to do Rajgad- Torna or Torna –Rajgad trek. This involves crossing few mountains and walk of 5-6 hours of ridge walking. However due to constraint of time we undertook to trek to Torna.

As Torna fort is near from Pune, so my daughter and me took a night train Pune – Veraval Express and Sachin ,Mayur ,Dolly were to join us from Pune, we were to catch this train from Vasai . As I have never taken any train from Vasai station, so was unaware as to on which platform the train was suppose to come and this resulted in lots of commotion for us , so much so that Akshita and me were running and climbing stairs from one platform to another , My daughter shouted aloud and said “Dad !! Saara trek idhar hi karaa doge kya !! “ I smiled and said “beta yeah toh thoda sa stretching chalu hai, before the actual climb” hearing this my daughter had a weird looks on her face which I deduced could be like Go to hell !!! . At last our train arrived and we managed to easily get into our compartment akhir mai reservation lekar ja raha tha, But what is this meri seat per yeah kon so raha hai, I tapped on the shoulder of the guy and said bhai sahib yeah mera seat hai” he rubs his eyes and say sab seat khali hai aap samne wali seat per chale jao .

I was like flabbergasted and wondered Kya Such me yaar in our country sab log yeah seriously sochte hai ,jo tera hai woh mera hai aur jo mera hai sirf mera hai.

Anyways I finally was able to get my encroached seat back. The guy was grumbling arre itna bhi kya seat Ka 4 ghate ka safar hai baad me ghar per sona hi toh hai.I turned around and said oye boss pehli baat mai ghar nahi jar aha aur doosri baat sona toh door mujhe agle din pahad chadna hai. The guy must have thought that I am crazy…per who kya jane hamare shauq(hobbies).

It was 4.45am when we reached Pune. As our bus to base village Velhe leaves from Swargate ST Stand so I took a bus from pune station to Swargate. Swargate is quite popular so one can find numerous mode of transport. It is hardly 15-20 minutes drive from Pune station. But problem yeh thi ke swargate itna popular hai ki bus me baithne ko jagah hi nahi thi . Fully packed and I must be standing on my toes like a balle dancer, meri daughter lucky thi I don’t know how she can get that bechara expression on her face and people offer her seat. Poor me mai standing hi travel kiya ….imagine yeh haal hai subhah 5.00am ko !!!

I was given to understand that there was 6.30 am bus from Swargate to Velhe (Velhe is the Base village for Torna Trek) So I went to the Enquiry counter, It is another mad house bas woh bunda jo counter ke peeche tha mere ko get lost nahi bola…simply said aapka bus toh Gaya , I said lekin abhi to 5.35 hai bus 6.30 ki hai na, he said toh aap 9 no platform per jao woh aayegi, Crazy yaar however no bus turned up till 7.oclock. Upon looking at the time table at the ST stand the first bus timing was given 8 am. Full chaos. Per hum trekker multiple option lekar chalte hai , yes ,Another way to travel is that we catch the bus which goes upto Bhor or towards Satara . In this case we get down at Cheladi/Nasarapur Phata.(Distance from pune to Nasarapur Phata is around 30 kms). From this Phata we get sharing Jeep which takes you to Velhe Village(31kms). We took the 7.30 Bhor Village bus and followed the above mentioned route.

In the bus we met a group who were going to Raireshwer so I asked Mayur and Dolly bolo Raireshwer chalna hai, and they were like" sirji maaff karo" Let me tell you we wanderers never have fixed destinations atleast for me I never know where I will end up therefore it has become a practice for me to inform my wife where I am when I reach the base village.(Its easy to report pati kahan se lapata hua tha)

It was almost 9.30 when we reached Velhe Village .Velhe is a small Town which has quite a few hotels where you can have Maharashtrian delicacies viz Poha,Misal, Wadapau etc.. Nowadays due to large trekker traffic Velhe has a lodging and boarding facility too !Our Trek starts just from the Velhe village itself ,one has to come upto the Police station of Velhe village just next to that there is a cemented road trail, you start walking on that for hardly 200 mtrs and take a right and you can see the trail in front of you , passing through the village within 5 minutes walk you come across a small man made waterfall.

Waterfall dekh kar Mandakini itni excited nahi hoti hogi jitna hum trekker ho jate hai. Cameras came out of the bags , posers like us jumped into the waterfall and bas photo…photo aur photo. From here we kept walking along the trail and then you see the stream on your right side this same stream falls over that man made waterfall.Jiske neeche hum log pose mar mar ker photo le rahe the.

As we cross this stream we can see the trail in front of us going up the mountain. We start the climb from here ,just ahead we see a large rusted signboard giving details of the torna fort. If one stops here and look around him he will find himself watching at the numerous water falls all across various mountains, The stream below at the foothill looking serene and magical, with lush green carpet running parallel to it. The trail going uphill is quite prominent still one has to be careful to avoid some overlapping foot trails which could lead you into the forest nearby. As we were doing this trek in the Monsoon so walking through the fields and climbing the initial portion was murky and muddy affair especially with lose red soil, making it very difficult to climb, many people were slipping and gripping at bush or stone to avoid slips. This climb some people may find stiff but once we cover this climb of say 1 hour session we reach a traverse section. This portion is easy consisting of flat to gentle climb of ½ hour till you reach the ridge section. Walking on the ridge is one of the highpoint of this trek. We see Lovely valley on both sides , If you are facing towards the Torna Fort on your left we can see beautiful series of mountains with clouds hanging over them,Numerous Waterfalls and on your right side in the backdrop we can see Panshet dam backwater engulfed by the mist. It’s a sight to behold. As they say Boss Break toh banta hai ..well this point is such point where you must sit for a while because by sitting here you will experience sheer heavenly delight, Let me tell you it is not the end of goodies here because the icing on the cake is in form of Vagabond Breeze that blows over this ridge, Mind you its so fierce that it can sweep you off the ground literally. One has to hold hands to withstand the impact of this wind.( My suggestion is become a child and enjoy been superman in this Wind).Moving from the Ridge, the climb gets little tougher because of the two Rock patch. This is about one hour climb from the ridge to the Top. Though there is railing along the rock patch section yet one has to be very careful while climbing during monsoon holding grip on this rocky patch becomes tricky. Getting down from this portion while coming back was indeed very difficult for many people. After climbing the first rock patch and further climb of 15 minutes we come across a waterfall, atleast more than 50 feet in height, Do drench yourself under it because the waterfall is again one of the highlight of this trek. Once you are done with the water therapy be ready to encounter the second and the last rock patch.

It’s a medium level rock patch with stone stairs, few of the steps have broken hence the climb becomes tough especially during rainy season. Here again there is iron railing which provides support. Once we complete this section we enter the fort through Bini Darwaja, a little walk further we see large water tank and just behind that is Menghai Goddess temple. On the right side of the temple is Budhala Machi and on the left side of the temple if you walk further you reach Konkan Darwaja. It is so called because from here the route opens to Konkan Plateau. Further as one walks on the Torna Top plateau you come across the famous majestic Zunjar Machi. Reaching to the furthest end requires good amount of skill as there is a rocky patch to overcome. Here I would like to bring to the attention of the the readers that if you do Torna Trek in Monsoon exploring the Torna Top is literally not possible due to excessive misty condition leading to very low visibility. Generally one day trek is not sufficient to cover the entire Fort(after all it is Prachandgad..The large fort).

Points to be noted: 1.If you want to enjoy all round beauty of sahyadri Trek then do it in monsoon .Advantage: Lush greenery, Misty condition, .Less Fatique while climbing2. Disadvantage of doing in monsoon: Nothing is visble on the Top,so you are not able to explore, getting down is hell of a problem because stone stairs and rocky section is quite slippery and the last portion of Descent is through muddy patch so you keep slipping and falling.3.Winter is a good Time to trek here.4.If trekking in non monsoon season then carry atleast 3 ltrs of water because there is no water source on Top.5, Jeep from Velhe to Cheladi is easily available but From Cheladi/Nasarpur phata to Pune getting transport can be difficult.6. it is better to hire pvt vehicle till the base village.(this is more relevant to Mumbai people )

We were to catch this train from Vasai, As I have never taken any train from Vasai station so was unaware as to on which platform the train was suppose to come and this resulted in lots of commotion for us , so much so that Akshita and me were running and climbing stairs from one platform to another , My daughter shouted aloud and said “Dad !! Torna Fort Trek

Torna Fort Trek

Torna Fort is the highest hill-fort in the Pune District. Situated at an altitude of 4,603 ft from sea level, it stands out among other forts in the western ghats of Maharashtra.

Because of the massive size of the fort, it is also called Prachandagad. This name is derived from Marathi which means Prachanda – massive and gad – a fort.

The best season to do this trek is from September to February. The beauty of the Sahyadris is best seen only after the monsoon season and up to summer.

Torna fort: maharashtra's treasured heritage and trekking paradise.

Torna Fort, also known as Prachandagad, stands majestically in the Sahyadri mountain range, approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Pune, Maharashtra, India. With a rich history dating back to the 13th century, this formidable fortress holds a significant place in Maharashtra’s heritage.

Historical Significance

Originally built by the Shaiva Panth, a religious sect, the Fort witnessed several battles and changing rulers over the centuries. It gained prominence under the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who captured it in 1646, marking the beginning of its association with the Maratha empire. Torna played a crucial role as the first fort captured by Shivaji Maharaj, symbolizing the dawn of Maratha sovereignty.

Adventure Amid Nature’s Bounty

Visiting the Fort offers not just a glimpse into its historical significance but also a thrilling adventure amid nature’s bounty. The trek to Torna Fort is renowned among outdoor enthusiasts for its challenging yet rewarding experience. As you ascend through rugged terrain and lush forests, each step echoes with tales of valor and conquest, making the journey more immersive.

Breathtaking Panoramic Views

Upon reaching the summit, travelers are greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Sahyadri hills and the lush greenery below. The fort’s architectural marvels, such as bastions, gates, and temples, stand as a testament to its erstwhile grandeur. Exploring the intricacies of its design and layout offers a deeper understanding of medieval military architecture and engineering.

Open-Air Museum

For history enthusiasts, Torna Fort serves as an open-air museum, where every stone narrates a story of bygone eras. Ruins of residential quarters, granaries, and water tanks provide insights into the daily life within the fort. The significance of Torna in the Maratha empire’s expansion and defense strategies adds layers of historical intrigue to the site.

Torna Fort - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024) - Tripadvisor

Torna Fort Trek – One Of The Best Places To Visit Near Pune

India is known for its rich culture, diversity and magnificent heritage. If you are someone who is smitten with mountains and loves trekking, the Himalayan ranges are an obvious first choice owing to its majesty and spiritual significance.

But, it’s not all.

The Sahyadri ranges in the Western Ghats of India  is also a hiker’s dream in the monsoons.

I got a chance to backpack in western India last year, and out of all experiences, the Torna Fort trekking in Pune has resulted to be one of the best places to visit in Maharashtra during monsoon.

Pune during the monsoon – A delight

In my time in the city, I could see that the city took on an altogether enchanting face during the monsoons as opposed to the summers. The monsoons start somewhere in between June of every year and are the best time to explore the Sahyadri ranges by hiking.

The dry trees and bushes turn to lush greens, the waterfalls flow with waters again, and most importantly you are treated with the cool winds and rains in place of the scorching sun.

Why are Pune treks popular?

Pune is situated on a plateau and the Sahyadri ranges in the Western Ghats are all within an hours drive from Pune City. The reason Pune has a lot of trekking options is that there are forts. Forts that have been built by King Shivaji , who was one of the most prominent rulers of the Maratha empire.

There are a lot of forts in Pune that he has built during his tenure for safety, to protect himself and his kingdom from the invaders by residing in a place that’s not easily accessible. And since these forts exist, we have a way up the hill, to the fort and enjoy the beauty of the Sahyadri ranges.

In this post, I will be sharing my experiences about the Torna Fort, which is one of my favorite places to visit in Pune till now.

Trek to Torna Fort – Part 1, July 2017

It was in July 2017 that we decided to hike up Torna Fort (aka. Prachandagad) , and sadly we could not complete the entire hike. We had to return midway through it. But having hiked up challenging treks before this and never giving up, this came as a surprise even for us.

Curious to find out why? Read on.

We started early in the morning, and we had reached a village where we parked our vehicles and started hiking. There was a small hike and up onwards that there were roads that took us to another hill’s base. It was when we realized that we could have brought our vehicles till there.

We started trekking up a hill from where the actual trek was supposed to start.

The Beauty of Torna Fort

It was raining throughout the duration of the trek. Sometimes a light drizzle with a pleasant breeze, and sometimes heavy downpours. When it was a light drizzle, we could feel suffocation inside the rainwear and since the breeze was very cool and soothing outside, we ultimately decided to enjoy the breeze, even if it meant getting drenched once in a while.

trek to torna fort

By the time we reached the top of the hill, we saw a vast stretch of mountains all around us, and a long trail through another two hills, onwards and upwards to the Fort. And the best part of it all was, there were waterfalls wherever you turn! Such a sight it is to behold.

trek to torna fort

And as if this was not enough, the leaves on the mountains were fluttering with the breeze. The outer side of the leaves had a dark green shade and the inner side, light green. With all the wind, these leaves were flipping colors from green to white, and from a distance, it felt like patches of mountains switching colors. It was something that you could stand and watch all day long. So much beauty!

But we had to reach the fort, as it was supposedly one of the best places to visit near Pune. So, we proceeded on.

Battling the winds and rain

And then, the actual story started. The wilderness. The unexpected.

As we started to walk onto the next hill, we were greeted by winds that hit us with great force.  We were not able to stand without holding on to each other, and at some point, we had to sit down to make sure we don’t get blown away! It was one of the few times I wished I was bulky! In addition to this, there were rains. Rains hitting directly at your skin from the clouds right above. We were literally amongst the clouds and the rain comes at such force that it feels like needles piercing your skin. Battling both was a life-or-death moment.

One of the friends who came with us tried to go a little ahead of all of us onto the next hill but had to return because we couldn’t sustain the force of the winds and rains. So we decided that we will come back for you next year, mentally prepared for this wild experience.

Honestly, it was truly wild. The winds could have taken us any moment, it was such a battle. Nonetheless, I totally love moments like this, moments that are not ordinary, moments that awake the wilder spirit in you.

Trek to Torna Fort – Part 2, July 2018

The next year, we decided to go for it again. In fact, we had decided to go at exactly the same month of the year to make sure it would be as wild as the last time.

Was it? Let’s find out.

Same fort in Pune, different year

We planned a hike again, with many more people this time, who got inspired after hearing our experiences.

This time, there were a lot of people, so we crossed the two hills ahead hand-in-hand and then had to climb up to the fort. The path from there had steps and rails on both sides so it was safe but not easy. It would be a Moderate – High level of difficulty.

Waterfalls near Torna Fort

On the way to the Fort, we stumbled upon a waterfall, which we did not mind getting drenched in, though it left us shivering in the cold.

trek to torna fort

We then reached The Torna Fort.

Getting to Torna Fort, one of the best places to visit near Pune

It was when I realized the summit that I realized that it was indeed a safe place to reside. Given the difficulty of the hike, thinking about the construction of the fort left us even more surprised.

trek to torna fort

You could also camp there overnight if you wish, and there aren’t tent options there so you might want to carry one along.

We had some snacks and hot drinks atop and then started our way back down. I was ahead of most of the group and I got to witness something I had not seen till then.

Reverse waterfalls!

trek to torna fort

The waterfalls are supposed to flow down, and here they were again making their way up because of the winds. Truly magical, I must say. It was quite cloudy, so I could see the reverse waterfalls only now and then.

The rest of the trek was easy, we made our way down and then onto our homes but Torna is one place that would stay with me forever.

Some of the other wonderful forts near Pune are the Rajmachi fort, the Raigad fort, the Visapur fort, the Tikona fort, etc.

Do let me know your experience of trekking in the Pune monsoons, or if you get a chance to visit this one or any of the other forts in Maharashtra, I would highly recommend it!
