Are You Trying to Determine the Ideal RV Length?

When you poll the internet, you will be told that the ideal length is whatever works for you. While that may be true, it’s an unsatisfying answer. If you get beyond those responses, you find that most consider 32 to 33 feet to be the ideal.

You can see evidence of this in the average lengths of the largest RV classes on the market: Class As and 5th Wheels. There are quite a few owners that start with a small trailer , upgrade to a super-large unit, and then downgrade to a 32 footer. 

Why Do RV So Many Owners Prefer 32-Feet Long RVs?

National Park RV Length Limitations

The 40+ monster motorhomes are amazing, but a lot of national parks do not have the capability of hosting them. If you have a small trailer, you can fit in almost anywhere.

A 32-footer won’t have this problem for the most part. It can comfortably fit into 81 percent of the national parks.

This chart shows the percentage of national parks that are capable of hosting the listed RV lengths.

Please note that there are often other RV parks near the national parks. A lot of them can provide accommodations for the larger RVs. We do not have exact data for those parks, so you will need to perform additional research for exact numbers.

The Longer the RV the More Dangerous and Inaccessible the Road

When you drive an RV around 40 feet long, small gusts of winds can leave you white-knuckling the steering wheel. The RVs with an average length will still deal with this, but it will be a more subdued experience.

There are also several national parks with roads that are too narrow, dangerous, or otherwise inaccessible to a longer RV. One example is the Sequoia National Park with a maximum length of 22 feet. The road is simply too dangerous for anything longer than that. 

Long RVs Require Special Licensing

Around 36-feet in length, the Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of RVs start to meet and exceed the 26,000 pounds mark. States often require drivers of vehicles that meet or exceed this weight to have a commercial driver’s license. Depending on the state, the 26,000 pounds can be the combined weight of the RV and its TOAD. 

Oftentimes, longer RVs have significant towing capacities. If you plan on towing a substantial weight, you might need the commercial driver’s license. The exact details vary widely from state-to-state, so you will want to look up your local ordinances for the specific details.

While getting a license is by no means a deal-breaker, it is an added annoyance that limits who can and cannot drive the RV. It can cause issues if you need another driver in a pinch and nobody has the required commercial driver’s license.

Why Is The Average RV Height 10 Feet or Less?

Nearly everybody loves the tall and arched ceilings of some of the larger units. If that’s true, why aren’t more RVs manufactured with the average 11-foot ceilings that trailers use? Better yet, why not make them extra tall like some of the 12-foot models?

One reason, which we already discussed, is the wind. Longer and tall units will catch more of the wind and the less stable it will be. While you probably aren’t going to flip over, the countersteering will be a pain. It’s not something that you will want to deal with every time you travel the open plains.

Low Clearance Bridges, Tunnels, Etc.

The main reason is that you start running into clearance issues. If you are not careful, you will quite literally run into them. For the most part, this won’t be an issue. Cities often build these types of low-clearance structures at about 11 to 13 feet, and they like to stick closer to 13 feet. Here is a PDF that lists most of the United States’ low-clearance structures. It was put together by coach-net, and it is really useful.

While you can fit through most of these low-clearance obstructions, it’s nice to have the extra foot of clearance. It can get pretty tense when it comes down to inches of clearance. The average of 10 feet is definitely better.

RV GPS Systems Are Important For the Bigger Than Average RVs

If you prefer a taller than average unit, you might want to consider picking up a GPS unit. Many of the modern RVs come with integrated GPS systems. If you are purchasing an older one, you might not be so lucky. RV GPS systems are different from a GPS system for a regular car. RVs and semi-truck drivers use navigation systems that allow the owner to input the specification of their vehicle.

If the vehicle cannot drive through a road or a low a low-clearance structure is going to get in the way, the GPS will pick an alternative route to get around it. This is invaluable for preventing an unwanted shave from the roof of your RV .

Why Is The Average RV Width 8 1/2 Feet?

Wide RVs in Narrow Lanes

This is rather obvious, so we won’t expound on it too much. Street sizes vary from location to location. They are designed with cars primarily in mind, and cars have a very narrow 6.5 feet body. Inner-city lanes, on average, are typically 10 to 12 feet wide, and highway roads are roughly 12-feet wide. 

These numbers can fluctuate, and wider RVs have a difficult time dealing with the narrower roads. A 9-feet wide RV just doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room on a 10-feet wide lane. In reality, you have even less space when you add the width of the mirrors into the mix.

State Permits For Wide Vehicles

Keeping RVs at an average of 8 ½ has limited paperwork and the associated costs for RV owners. Depending upon the state, wide-bodied RVs might require a special permit. Here are some examples that we’ve come across, but there are definitely some more to find. Check your local DMV for more information.

• Arizona, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia
• Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Washington D.C., and more

How Do You Measure An RV?

For the most part, this is a pretty straightforward task, so I won’t complicate it. When measuring an RV, you don’t measure all of the components installed onto the body. Mirrors, ladders, and sometimes AC units aren’t included. The AC units are measured for knowing your clearance rather than the height of the RV. Some manufacturers list it and some don’t.

When measuring the length of the RV, you measure from the side of the unit. Without bending the measuring tape, hold each end from one bumper to the other bumper. If there is an attached ladder, do not include it in the measurement.

When measuring the height, you aren’t measuring the body. You are measuring from the edge of the roof to the ground.

You are measuring the body. The mirrors are not included in this measurement

Trailer Owners

If you are measuring a trailer, you don’t include the measurement of the tongue. 

Conclusion On RV Lengths, Widths & Heights

For some people, a 40-feet long Class A monster is the only way to go. For others, they prefer something on the smaller side. Finding the average RV length, width, and height is a great way to begin the search. However, you shouldn’t hesitate to go outside if an RV has your attention. We’re all unique, and that’s reflected in our choices. Choose what fits you.

Just in the last decade, I have owned, rented, and sold a number of travel trailers. I have my own share of experience with the different lengths and sizes of RVs. In this article, we get into the different travel trailer sizes and include a travel trailer size chart for you.

What size travel trailer should you buy?

Generally speaking, the ideal travel trailer length for a family of 4 is 25-30 feet long. With a 27-foot travel trailer, you can likely park in your driveway, camp at 93% of national parks, and still have room to sleep 4-6 people comfortably.

Generally, for convenience, longer travel trailers are the best choices for a family with at least 4 members or more. However, there are roads and campsites that have limits on the lengths that they can accommodate.

I have personally experienced the benefits and drawbacks of traveling in different lengths of trailers. So I made this article in the hopes of helping you determine which is the best length for a travel trailer for you. It can also serve as a guide so you can rule out the other sizes that you know won’t work for you.

No matter how long your trailer is you need to see behind you. Campsites can be tight and have obstacles (like kids). A  wireless backup camera  makes life so much easier .. and safer. Best Size Travel Trailer by Length

Some will say that anything above 30 feet is too long for a travel trailer. But the truth is that the answer to whether a travel trailer is too long lies on your tow vehicle.

As a rule of thumb, the longest trailer that your tow vehicle can pull is the one that does not exceed 75% of the maximum loaded weight of your vehicle.

I put together this travel trailer size chart to help you see the length, weight, and accommodations for travel trailers. This is based on reviewing hundreds of RVs and my own experience.

A big consideration is the number of people in your family. How long does it have to be for you and your family to live in it comfortably?

Travel Trailer Length Based on Camping Preference

Some people report that a travel trailer that is more than 35 feet is a problem when they are looking for a campground to set up base on. Many of the available campgrounds, especially national parks, only have limited and small space.

However, if you own a bigger rig, finding the right campground is possible if you are willing to stay in the vicinity of the sites.

The question will lie in your preferences. Do you plan to camp in National Forests or dispersed campgrounds? If so, then having a long rig will seldom be a problem for you as these campgrounds usually can accommodate longer rigs.

If you prefer to camp in National Parks or small private campgrounds then this might prove to be a slight problem as these campgrounds usually have limits on how long of a rig they can serve.

Pro Tip: Make sure to look into the campgrounds that you plan to stay at. When you are thinking about tight spaces or bumpy roads take into account eh turning radius and hinge point of the trailer.

How to Measure the Length of the Travel Trailer

The length of the travel trailer that your manufacturer specified is the box of the trailer and considered your trailer length. State-run campgrounds and some private ones usually base their site length upon the length of the travel unit itself.

Most often than not, there will be a separate parking space for your tow vehicle.

I own a 35-feet travel trailer. It is specified by the manufacturer as 35-feet. When I call to reserve a campsite, I ask for 35 feet or longer.

However, when going through roads that have length restrictions, you have to make sure to measure the whole length with your tow vehicle.

For example, in Independence Pass near Aspen, Colorado, RVs more than 35 feet in length are prohibited to pass. We have a 35 feet trailer but our total length from the bumper from the front of the truck to the bumper at the back of the trailer is 59 feet. (We know this because we were measured when we took the ferry from Seattle. )

Does Travel Trailer Length Include the Tongue and Hitch?

The trailer length and the manufacture description do not include the tongue and the hitch. The length is only the inside box of the trailer.

If you want to know exactly how long your trailer will be you need to include The rear bumper, any accessories like a bike rack, and the front tongue and hitch. The rear bumper generally adds 6 to 12 inches. The front tongue and hitch add 2 to 3 feet to the length.

So for example my 35-foot travel trailer is 38 feet bumper to hitch. It’s even longer when the  bike rack is on the back . When towing it with a truck it is 59 feet bumper-to-bumper.

How Does Length of the Trailer Affect Towing

A longer trailer will move differently behind the truck than a shorter trailer. Both the length and weight of the trailer affect the amount of weight on the tongue and swaying the backend. Most experts agree that a longer trailer is actually easier to tow because it will have a slower delay.

Weight distribution and sway bar will help you tow a trailer. This is the set that I use which is easily installed and works great.  Check the price on Amazon.

However, the total radius with a longer trailer will be longer. Therefore your turns will be much wider. In addition, you only to watch the inside corner very carefully for obstacles.

What Are the Disadvantages of a Longer Trailer?

The longer your trailer is, the more difficult it is to look for camps to stay in. Generally, state parks commonly have a length restriction of 35 to 45 feet. However, when your rig is 41 feet or above, you have to expect that you will only be accommodated by less than 10% of the campsites. On the other hand, 98% of campsites can accommodate trailers that are 19 feet and less.

Another disadvantage of a longer travel trailer is the total weight. Once you get up to 30 or more feet and 7 to 8,000 pounds you will need a 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck to tow it.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that you’re towing capacity will be reduced by up to 20% at altitude and over the mountain passes 

A longer trailer has more tail drag in the back end. You will need to be driving on relatively flat roads.  So you will be limited to maintained roads and campgrounds.  You will not be able to off-road or boondock much.

What are the Advantages of a Longer Travel Trailer

A bigger, longer-length travel trailer has many advantages.  A longer camper has more room inside giving you more space to move around.  You will also have more privacy.  My trailer with 35 feet length actually has 2 separate bedrooms with doors.

Another advantage is the convenience of the space.  A smaller camper will need to be spending time changing the inside back-and-forth between living quarters and sleeping quarters. Our first Trailer was a 20-foot long vintage camper with no slide-outs. Every night and every morning we had to transform it back into a table put the bunks away and make the bed back into a couch just to have breakfast.

A longer travel trailer can carry more weight. Once you have a camper you will want to load it up with all your favorite camping gear. You would be surprised how much your toys end up weighing.

In addition, if you are Boondocking he will be also be carrying a full tank of water to your campsite.

A larger trailer also responds to movement when towing more slowly than a short trailer. Some people even say driving a longer trailer is easier than a shorter one. The hinge point at the back of the tow vehicle and the distance to the back end of the trailer is longer. The physics determines how quickly the very back of the trailer responds to small adjustments in the front.

Summing up the Ideal Length of a Travel Trailer

The best length for your travel trailer will depend on the needs of your family. If you are traveling long-term and want more space and amenities similar to an apartment, you will require a bigger camper. If you are planning on shorter trips to national parks and sightseeing, a shorter travel trailer will likely work for you.

Before buying a camper I always suggest that you try renting at least one similar to what you’re thinking of buying. Travel trailers are difficult to rent from national companies. However, you can rent from a private owner on  Outdoorsy  or  RVezy .

To rent a camper similar to the one you’re thinking of buying simply go to the  Outdoorsy  or  RVezy  website. Once you’re on the website choose the destinations that you would like to pick up the travel trailer. Then from the options choose the number of people that should sleep and your ideal length.

Why You Need to Know Travel Trailer Measurements

Knowing how travel trailers are measured is helpful whether you’re looking to buy or rent an RV. Can that trailer fit into a campsite you want to book? Will it squeeze into your RV storage area? To find out, you need to review how your travel trailer length, width, and height is measured by the RV manufacturer, dealer, or private party RV seller.

How Long is a Travel Trailer?

To understand the measurement specifications of a travel trailer you first need to know how travel trailer length is measured.

• Some measure travel trailer length by starting at the ball mount and going all the way to the back bumper. 
• But other times, only the inside living space is measured. For example, according to the RVIA, the advertised travel trailer length should only include the usable “floor plan” length. In other words, the tongue or rear bumper should not be included in the final measurement. So keep in mind that a trailer described as 20 feet in length might be 23-24 feet overall when you factor in bumper and tongue length too.

When talking to an RV salesperson or private party RV seller, it’s important for you to ask how their travel trailer brands are measured.

How Wide is a Travel Trailer

The width measurement for travel trailers varies greatly, depending on the model and make of each RV. However, most travel trailers do not exceed 8-feet 6-inches in order to comply with the majority of state highway laws.

How Tall is a Travel Trailer?

Travel trailer manufacturers build RVs to be no more than 13-feet, 6-inches tall. This RV height complies with the typical height of highway overpasses in the USA. But it’s still important to know your travel trailer height. This number can mean the difference between a low bridge collision and getting to your campsite safely.

Just like travel trailer width, the average height of travel trailers differs greatly depending on the model. However, most are usually 11 feet tall.

Keep in mind that the roof-mounted A/C unit adds another foot or so. Since manufacturers may or may not include the A/C unit in their travel trailer height measurements, the best way to measure travel trailer height is to do it yourself with a surveyor’s tape measure. Stand on the roof and have a friend on the ground to catch the end. Now you have your measurement.

What About Campsite Measurements?

Want to book a campsite for your travel trailer? When the campground gives you the parking area length, they are providing the length of usable space available from trailer tongue to rear bumper. Do not exceed it or you may be asked to move or leave if the campground is fully booked.

What is the Best Trailer length at US national parks?

The best trailer length at national parks differs by location. Most US national park campgrounds were built before the 1980s. The majority of campsites do not accommodate modern RVs built since that era. Your best bet for national park RV camping is to choose an RV smaller than 30-feet long. ATV Trailer Sizes

ATV trailers can be a trailer that is made specifically to haul ATVs or it can be a landscape/utility style trailer that is more of a multi-purpose trailer:

• 5’ X 8’ — The smallest ATV trailer is one of the most popular, allowing you to haul 1 ATV at a time.
• 12’ & 14’ Single Axle Utility/Landscape Style Trailers — Another common size, this single axle trailer lets you haul up to 2 ATVs at once, depending on the size of your individual ATVs. These 12’ and 14’ single axle trailers usually have a 6’4” deck width but wider widths are also available. Some of these trailers have removable front side loading ramps to load your first ATV sideways.
• 16’ & 18’ Tandem Axle Landscape Trailers — This tandem axle trailer is another popular size for hauling multiple ATVs and is rated for a heavier weight. These tandem axle trailers are also available with front side unloading ramps. These tandem axle landscape/utility trailers can have a deck width of 76” to 82”.
• Side Loading Deckover ATV Trailers — These trailers are usually made of aluminum but some manufacturers offer this style trailer in steel as well. These trailers will have removable side ramps and ATVs can be loaded from either the side or the rear on most models.

Open Landscaping Trailer Sizes

The backbone of a landscaping company, these trailers are most often used to haul large mowers as well as other supplemental equipment.

• 6’4” X 12’ — This single axle trailer can usually carry 2 zero turn mowers (depending on their sizes) as well as other handheld equipment. The lower price point makes this option attractive. Also becoming popular is the 6’4” X 14’ version of this single axle landscape trailer.
• 16’, 18’ and 20’ Open Trailer Tandem Axle Landscape Trailer — These tandem axle trailers can carry more weight and have the deck room for 3+ mowers, which makes this an ideal trailer for a company with large crews that handle large commercial properties and residential properties as well. These trailers are available in both 7,000# GVWR and also 9,990# GVWR.

Dump Trailer Sizes

Dump trailers are an integral part to many types of businesses. They are available in multiple sizes from 5’ X 8’ single axle models in either 2,990# GVWR or 5,000# GVWR all the way up to 20’ Gooseneck models with a 24,000# GVWR and everything in between! Most of the dump trailer sizes are available with ramps so your dump trailer can pull double duty for you. In addition to hauling dirt, and more, you can also load your skid steer or tractor on your dump trailer with ramps.

• 6’ X 12’ — This trailer’s dimensions tend to be big enough for most personal and commercial applications, which is why it’s such a good buy. The 6’ X 12’ dump trailer set up with ramps and combo or 3 way gate is the most popular dump trailer model.
• 14’ — The 14’ dump trailer is another very popular model. The 14’ dump trailer will be considered a heavy duty model and will most likely be equipped with either dual cylinders or a scissor hoist. These heavy duty models usually have a bed width of close to 7’. Upgrading to this popular size tandem axle dump trailer not only increases the amount of product you can haul or the size of the machine you can haul, but it also increases the weight you carry.

Deckover Trailer Sizes

The most popular size of a deckover trailer is the 20’ model. However, longer deck lengths are available. A deckover trailer is just that — the deck of the trailer sits over top of the wheels. So this model would not have fenders and would allow full width to haul wider machines, pallets of product, and more. The deckover trailer is available in a couple of different configurations:

• Deckover with an All Flat Deck — On this model, the whole deck of the trailer would be flat. It would not have a beavertail and also would not have ramps. This model would be ideal to haul lumber, pipe and skids that would be loaded from the side of the trailer by a forklift.
• Deckover with a Fixed Beavertail — This model would have a portion of the deck that was flat and then a fixed beavertail with ramps. For instance, a 20’ deckover in this model would have a 16’ flat deck, plus a 4’ beavertail with stand up ladder ramps to load equipment such as tractors and skid steers on it.
• Deckover with an Adjustable Beavertail — This model would be equipped with a flat deck plus a beavertail but the beavertail on this model is adjustable. So, when the adjustable beavertail is up, the whole deck of the trailer would be flat. When the adjustable beavertail is down, ramps slide out and you can load a piece of equipment like a skid steer or tractor on it. This model is available in 7,000# GVWR, 9,990# GVWR, and all the way up to 18,400# GVWR. Heavy duty deckover trailers are also available to haul larger pieces of equipment such as pavers. Skid Steer/Equipment Trailer Sizes

These low-profile equipment trailers are used to haul skid steers and other types of construction equipment. These heavy-duty trailers do an important job for countless construction companies. In addition to hauling your skid loaders and tractors, these types of trailers can also haul material such as lumber, pallets, and more.

• 16’ and 18’ — These are the most popular sizes in Skid Steer/Equipment trailers but they are also available in longer lengths as well. These types of trailers are available in 9,990# GVWR, 12,000# GVWR and all the way up to 18,400# GVWR.

RV Confidential #11: Short Wheelbases and Accidents go hand in hand!

I’ve been complaining about short wheelbases for so long that I’ve almost gotten to a point of acceptance that no one’s listening—so why talk too much? And, of course, for a consumer advocate that must never happen. But thanks to social media, I’ve been shaken wide awake by the terrific amount of photos of RV accidents being displayed. Luckily for me, many photos show the wheels so that I can readily estimate the wheelbase.

Now in the photos I’m showing you, (all of which come from the internet) you’ll see that motor homes and travel trailers are not generally sturdily built. They simply don’t like to flip, hit a tree, or be crashed into. So, since they aren’t built for accidents, the best way to avoid an accident is to pick one and drive one like you don’t want to be involved in an accident. (As my grandson tells me, you need to drive a motor home like you’d ride a motorcycle.)

The real world tells us that most motor homes are heavy. They can weigh many tons. If you flip one on its roof, it’ll usually squash. Because I have been called by attorneys to inspect many motor homes that have been squashed and have come apart, I’ve accepted this structural weakness as a fact. Having been schooled in mechanics and the laws of nature called physics, it’s easy for me to picture the scenario of a short-wheelbase motor home being flipped over by the wind or other factors with specific results. As pictured in these photos, the results are often disastrous.

To get the wheelbase-to-length ratio of a motor home, simply divide the wheelbase by the length of the vehicle. According to RVCG, under 51% is extremely dangerous; 51% to 54% is dangerous under many road condition and not adequate for general safety; 55% to 56% is marginal; 57% and over is usually steady on the road under most conditions. The higher the wheelbase-to-length ratio the safer it gets. (This subject will be coming up again when we discuss the relationship between tag axles and wheelbase.)

Travel trailers aren’t as easy to tow as salesmen tell you they are. If you don’t hitch and balance them right, they’ll flip and take you and your towing vehicle with them. Fifth-wheel travel trailers are much more forgiving of low BOB (back-of-ball) ratios than conventional travel trailers (ball hitched). But even with fifth wheels, a low BOB ratio (called wheelbase by some manufacturers) can always be a problem on wet or slippery roads—as shown in the fifth-wheel accident photo. The statistics are clear: Almost all travel trailer accidents on America’s roadways are with conventional travel trailers; and most of those have low back-of ball ratios.

Life is too precious to get sloppy.

What You Need to Know About Heartland RV

Heartland was founded in 2003 and began production a year later, releasing its first RV, the Landmark fifth wheel, in 2004. Founded by industry veterans led by former Damon CEO Brian Brady, Heartland quickly introduced new features and designs with its earliest models, such as unobstructed pass-through storage. So, it’s no surprise they garnered interest from a wide audience of RVers. 

In total, Heartland manages twenty-one unique brands across these three RV types, which positions them to meet RVers’ needs in a wide range of sizes, styles, and price points. 

Several of their current brands are based on new or unaddressed consumer demand, including lightweight towables like the Sundance and North Trail or the large Cyclone toy haulers. 

Favorite Heartland Features

Each brand and floorplan offers unique features and amenities worth comparing and contrasting to other models. But here are some of our favorite Heartland RV design features.

Heartland RV made a great first impression by introducing the first “Texas-sized” unobstructed pass-through storage on their Landmark fifth wheels in 2004. They’ve continued that theme by introducing “Super King Kong” size storage in certain travel trailers, which provides a whopping 67.5 feet of cubic storage. 

Described as “fifth-wheel-sized storage in a travel trailer,” this expands your storage possibilities on lighter-weight travel trailers like the North Trail Ultra Lite and Mallard. Heartland also includes a patented Super Store-More basement storage with three-sided access that boasts 30% more storage. 

Across the full Heartland RV lineup, you’ll see unique variations on standard RV floorplans that may surprise you. This is a competitive advantage: 

RVers want the known benefits of certain floorplans like the two bedroom fifth wheel or rear kitchen fifth wheel, but with exciting adaptations — like on the new Corterra 3.7 fifth wheel . This floorplan is familiar yet new, with opposing sofas in the living area, one in a smaller slide-out, and an auxiliary middle room to be used as an office or entertainment center.

My Heartland RV App

Heartland’s recent introduction of the My Heartland RV app gives owners an interesting tool to better care for their RV. This mobile resource provides helpful checklists and reminders about routine maintenance and allows owners to track part orders, warranty expiration dates, and more. In addition, the app includes lots of how-to content for first-time RVers. 

RV manufacturers must address several factors to ensure a good customer experience. RV quality and selection are important, but the best manufacturers offer solutions for the full ownership lifecycle. Heartland has done that, at least partly, with their app. While some users have had issues initially connecting to the app, users are happy with the resource once they are able to access the functionality and content. 

Heartland Travel Trailers

Originally a fifth wheel and toy hauler manufacturer, Heartland began producing travel trailers in 2007 to offer lighter-weight, more fuel-friendly RVs at a more affordable cost. Now, Heartland manufactures well over 100 unique travel trailer models. Its travel trailers often include innovative floorplans and significant storage options—trademarks of Heartland RV. 

Let’s look at three of Heartland’s most popular travel trailer lines: a stick-and-tin, a laminate, and a unique and recent adaptation with the Eddie Bauer line, including laminate and stick-and-tin options. 

• Length: 22’5-¾” to 37’5-½” 
• UVW: 3,880-8,480 pounds
• Sleeps: 3-8

Heartland Pioneer is a stick-and-tin travel trailer brand that offers 17 floorplans. Surprisingly, their smallest unit is able to sleep up to eight, which showcases this brand’s versatility. 

We like Pioneer’s EZ Camp Setup standard package, which includes an outside hot and cold shower, LP quick connect, and TV prep, so you’re ready to facilitate a great outdoor experience and the standard indoor RV amenities you expect. 

The QB300 is one of our favorite Pioneer floorplans. It features a bunk room with a cool work table and an impressive primary bedroom. 

• Length: 21’9.5” to 39’5”
• UVW: 4,340-8,290 pounds
• Sleeps: 3-9+

Mallards are distinct—you recognize their aerodynamic shape almost anywhere. While compact, they offer tall 80” ceilings that contribute to their recognizeability. These laminate travel trailers feature standard “EZ Sweep” slide-out floors and the all-new “Master Chef” kitchen with infinity-edge countertops and stainless steel undermount sinks. Mallard travel trailers also include the Super King Kong pass-through storage compartments. 

Eddie Bauer

• Length: 26’2-⅛” to 38’5-¼”
• UVW: 4,240-8,824 pounds

In 2023, Camping World announced a collaboration with Eddie Bauer and Heartland RV to produce Eddie Bauer-branded towables. In 2024, Heartland became the sole manufacturer of Eddie Bauer towables and expanded its offering. 

Heartland currently builds three Eddie Bauer travel trailer lines: Eddie Bauer Aluminum, Eddie Bauer Laminated, and Eddie Bauer Signature, with a total of 15 models. You will see iconic Eddie Bauer branding alongside Heartland features and designs. These RVs merge exciting floorplans with affordable luxury features that are welcomed in the travel trailer space. 

Among Heartland’s offerings, they include an impressive lineup of travel trailers, and their other brands are certainly worth exploring to discover more models and options. 

• North Trail Ultra-Lite
• Mallard Pathfinder
• Sundance Ultra-Lite
• Trail Runner

Heartland Fifth Wheels

Heartland RV first exclusively manufactured fifth wheel RVs, and this segment still includes many of their most popular and well-known models. Selection won’t be a problem, nor will customization. 

Certain Heartland fifth wheel brands offer standard features across their models. Others, like Big Country , offer more customization, letting you choose your desired options and features. As always, big basement storage remains a significant benefit to all Heartland fifth wheels. 

Starting with Landmark, their first fifth wheel brand, and ending with Corterra, their most recent, we’ll get a good look at how Heartland’s fifth wheels have evolved and maintained consistency. 

• Length: 43’1” to 43’10”
• UVW: 15,657-16,098 pounds
• Sleeps: 3-4

In addition to being their first RV, the Landmark remains Heartland’s most luxurious fifth wheel to date. Landmark now includes three models: Chesapeake, Tucson, and Scottsdale. Each offers luxury features while maintaining a lighter weight and increased durability. Choose from a rear kitchen, rear living, and front kitchen floorplans.  

• Length: 36’5” to 44’3”
• UVW: 12,995-14,460 pounds
• Sleeps: 3-6

A favorite among full-time campers, the five Bighorn fifth wheel models offer a wonderful balance of luxury and functionality. While not quite in the same category as Landmark, Bighorn still qualifies as a luxury fifth wheel. 

Enjoy oversized basement compartments, Azdel-laminated sidewall construction, and extra-large panoramic windows. You should also check out the Bighorn bathrooms, which feature marble-style showers, solid-surface counters, large sinks, and faucets. These are truly residential, and, perhaps interestingly, four of the five are rear living floorplans.

• Length: 34’9-½” to 41’9-½”
• UVW: 10,450-12,823 pounds

Travel Trailer Specs

• Length: 26’11” to 34’11”
• UVW: 5,246-7,566 pounds
• Sleeps: 5-9+

Introduced in 2024, the Corterra lineup includes four travel trailers and three fifth wheels. Its fifth wheel floorplans include a rear living model, a rear kitchen, and a lofted double bedroom option. The Corterra 5th wheels also include some of Heartland’s newest innovations, including their new TRIO A/C system to increase airflow. These campers offer residential appliances, Azdel walls, an aerodynamic front cap, and luxury design features RVers will love.

Heartland Toy Haulers

Heartland toy haulers are an industry mainstay. These include some of their longest RVs with large garages that push the boundaries of what’s possible with a toy hauler. But it’s not all battleships and monster garages. They also include some lighter-weight, more nimble travel trailer toy haulers that are more affordable, too. 

Let’s explore a classic—the Cyclone—and their most recent toy hauler brand—Torque. 

Cyclone 

• Length: 42’10-½” to 47’4-¾”
• UVW: 14,582-17,134 pounds
• Sleeps: 7-8

Cyclone was Heartland’s first toy hauler and remains one of their most well-known and popular brands. These are large, to say the least. The largest garage on the Cyclone is 17’9”, while the smallest is 13’. Enjoy patio-capable ramps and spacious luxury bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas. Cyclones are great for those with big toys and big ambitions for full-timing adventures. 

• Length: 36’2.375” to 46’9”  
• UVW: 11,479-15,017 pounds
• Sleeps: 5-8
• Length: 29’11” to 38’9”
• UVW: 7,225-10,010 pounds

Torque is Heartland’s newest toy hauler brand. It includes travel trailer and fifth wheel versions, with 14 floorplans in total. Several Torque toy haulers incorporate an open concept that merges the garage with the living area. Torque includes some of Heartland’s newest innovations, including the TRIO A/C system. Be sure to check out the outdoor “Grill and Go” kitchens, which include three-burner pull-out stoves in some models.

Who Owns Heartland RV? 

Heartland RV is a subsidiary of Thor Industries, one of the “Big Three” RV manufacturers. Thor acquired Heartland in 2010. The company maintains its headquarters, manufacturing plants, and parts and service facilities in and around Elkhart, Indiana. 

Who Makes Heartland RVs?

While a subsidiary of Thor, Heartland is an independent manufacturer and maintains multiple facilities. Is Heartland A Good RV Brand?

Heartland has maintained a dynamic production approach over the years, introducing new facilities, technology, and RV updates to better serve its customers. We like Heartland’s approach and believe they offer customers quality RVs with exciting new adaptations. Among other strengths, we expect Heartland will continue to refine its production processes to offer affordable, quality RVs that new and veteran RVers will enjoy. 

Given Heartland’s size, scope, and inclusion of more budget-friendly RVs, it has received criticism over the years from select customers who were unhappy due to construction issues or problems with their RV, service, or warranty. Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

Ventje turns VW’s ID Buzz into a very charming camper

V olkswagen’s ID Buzz now has a custom camper build-out that’s just as clever and charming as the electric microbus. It’s called eVentje, and it’s now available for general sale in Europe.

Designed and sold by Ventje , a small but rapidly growing company based in the Netherlands, the eVentje conversion is as good as it gets until VW finally releases a California edition of the ID Buzz — which is still a few years away at least. That long delay since European sales began in 2022 has made room for a burgeoning aftermarket for ID Buzz camper products, including the excellent and relatively inexpensive Ququq camping box I previously reviewed.

I first tested a Ventje camper built on top of a VW Transporter T5 cargo van in 2022, before living and working from an ID Buzz for a few weeks in 2023. In 2024, I finally got to test the union of the two for a weekend. And let me tell you, this is definitely a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The ID Buzz has always been a showstopper when driving past onlookers — now, the show continues when the doors open to reveal that wonderfully adaptive Ventje interior.

The overall design of the Ventje camper still relies on more than 100 magnets to keep all those wooden surfaces aligned and locked in place. There’s still a kitchen accessible from inside and out, a pop-top tent, and a multipurpose interior that converts from a lounge to a bed to a luxurious outside furniture set in minutes. Only now, things have been refined throughout with one big addition: a folding table and hidden stools to create an outside bar. Swoon .

The kitchen has seen several improvements that provide more adaptable prep surfaces — always a challenge in a small space — and smarter use of storage. Ventje also moved to not one but two induction cooktops thanks to the inclusion of a 2200W inverter and 2160Wh leisure battery that charges from the VW’s driving battery, a 350-watt solar panel, and a mini shore-power outlet located on the lower backside of the van.

There’s even a bar.

Ventje also makes it easier to keep all your own gear powered with eight USB sockets (4x USB-A, 4x USB-C), a 12V car jack, 3x wireless charging surfaces, and 3x 230V AC sockets for anyone looking to take advantage of their company’s hybrid office policy. There are also more lighting options including dimmable LED light strips and a closable sunroof in the pop-top tent.

VW’s poorly designed software still frustrates the otherwise exceptional driving experience, which remains rattle-free even with all of Ventje’s customizations. One would expect VW to eventually enable a camping mode on the ID Buzz, a feature already found on its existing California series campers. That would make heating and cooling the ID Buzz more intuitive when parked and allow owners to more easily disable the interior motion alarm when locking all the doors at night.

The eVentje can sleep four but is currently highway legal for only two people. It’s built around the regular-wheelbase ID Buzz, not the long-wheelbase model coming to Europe and the US (finally!) later this year . Nevertheless, my wife and I didn’t want for more space, even with the dog coming along on the trip.

The eVentje, like the ID Buzz, isn’t cheap, and soon, in Europe, it will have to compete with VW’s new PHEV “T7” California camper going on sale in June for what’s probably about the same price. But that model lacks the retrofuturistic appeal of the all-electric ID Buzz, and its interior is arguably less flexible — and definitely less fun — than Ventje’s warm custom design.

The modified eVentje ID Buzz starts at €95,000 (about $103,000) in Europe. An order placed today will ship in nine months to customers in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Ventje says that it’s also planning to expand to the UK and US in time.

Importantly, Ventje is doing what VW hasn’t since first teasing the ID Buzz all the way back in 2017 : deliver a worthy all-electric successor to the iconic Type 2 camper.
