A Weekend in Mumbles

A Weekend in Mumbles

Let us take you on a weekend trip to Mumbles. In our 3-day itinerary, you’ll have the chance to explore some of Swansea Bay’s most stunning natural landscapes and experience the coastal village of Mumbles. From coastal walks to castles, pub lunches to night time gin bars, there’s no shortage of things to see and do on a weekend in Mumbles.

Nestled on the southern coast of Wales, is the quaint coastal village of Mumbles. The area is home to picturesque beaches, breathtaking coastal walks, and its very own castle. Mumbles and the Gower Peninsula offers stunning scenery, friendly locals, and plenty to do, whether you’re a nature lover or a city dweller.

Pack your bags, grab your walking boots, and join us for a weekend adventure in Swansea Bay!

Day 1: Arrive in Swansea Bay and Head to Mumbles

Travel to Swansea Bay: Swansea Bay is accessible by public transport and by car. With direct trains running from London Paddington to Swansea, you can reach the city in approximately 3 hours. Swansea Bay and the cute village of Mumbles are accessible in a short, 20-minute bus ride from Swansea city centre.

Lunch at The Green Room: On your first day, after arriving at Swansea train station, head over to The Green Room Bar and Kitchen in Swansea’s new COPR Bay area for lunch. They source their produce locally and aim to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible. There are good vegetarian and vegan options. Their tomato and basil soup of the day was delicious and Luke chowed down on a cracking pesto tofu on sourdough.

Arrive in Mumbles: After lunch, hop on the number 2 or 2C bus along Swansea Bay to reach Mumbles. This cosy village has bucket loads of character and charm, and is quite a contrast to Swansea city’s industrial, urban landscape.

travel house mumbles swansea

Check-in at The Oyster House: For your accommodation, we highly recommend The Oyster House in Mumbles. This boutique hotel, restaurant and bar is located on the seafront and the rooms have stunning views across Swansea Bay and Mumbles. The tastefully decorated rooms include plush, comfortable beds, rainmaker showers and sliding doors opening out to sea views. Even better, there’s no road between you and the sea! We loved our stay here and the friendly staff took great care of us.

A Weekend in Mumbles - The Oyster House

Walk Along the Promenade and Feast on Pub Grub at The Oyster House: Work up an appetite with a walk in the fresh air along the beautiful promenade which leads to Mumbles’ Victorian pier and lighthouse. It’s about an hour walk to the end and back, so perfect for a pre-dinner jaunt. Come back and snuggle into a nook at The Oyster House for an evening meal there.

Day 2: Explore Rhossili Beach and the Gower Peninsula

On your second day, take a bus from Swansea Bus Station to Rhossili on the Gower Peninsula, which is the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This was our favourite activity of our weekend in Swansea Bay. It is honestly unmissable if you’re in this beautiful corner of South Wales!

Hike Worms Head: Spend the morning hiking across the causeway to Worms Head, a long stretch of headland accessible only during low tide. It’s about a 2-hour hike/scramble across a rocky causeway which is exposed when the tide is out. As you approach, there’s a sign signalling the times between which it’s safe to head out.

Once we reached the headland, we were excited to see seals lounging and swimming off the coast. We joined a few other hikers to quietly watch them from the clifftop. Then it was on to the awesome Devil’s Bridge. Its angular opening in the rock is really unique and we’ve not seen a rock formation like it anywhere else.

A Weekend in Mumbles - Worms Head and Devils Bridge

Lunch at The Lookout Cafe: After the hike, head to the warm and welcoming The Lookout for a hot Gower coffee or Welsh Brew Tea and a chunky roast veggie sandwich. The rosy-cheeked women serving coffee and food are amongst some of the nicest you’ll meet. We snuck a few freshly made Welsh cakes for a snack on the beach later too.

A Weekend in Mumbles - Rhossili Bay Lunch

Explore Rhossili Bay: Spend the afternoon exploring Rhossili Bay, which has been voted one of Britain’s Best Beaches for four years running and we can see why. The views from the cliff tops above are stunning and its breadth is majestic. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see wild Welsh ponies up on the cliffs too.

travel house mumbles swansea

Take the path down onto the beach for a meandering walk across the sand. You’ll also see the historic Helvetia shipwreck from 1887 lodged in the sand. The Gower Peninsula was a smuggling hotspot during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the area has many shipwrecks from unlucky vessels caught on stormy seas.

A Weekend in Mumbles - Rhossili Bay Beach

Fill Your Boots with Pasta and Ice Cream: In the evening, head over Verdi’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlour in Mumbles , for big plates of pasta and ice cream sundaes. This is a real family joint with plenty of holidaying and local families filling up on carbs and sweet treats.

Day 3: Discover Oystermouth Castle and the Gower Coast Path

Browse Local Shops in Mumbles: On your final day, take some time to explore Mumbles itself. We had a slow breakfast and enjoyed some local coffee, before we had a browse of the lovely Gower Gallery which is stocked with local arts and crafts inspired by the seascape. The Lovespoon Gallery on the high street has a huge collection of love spoon designs from Wales’ best carvers. Have you heard of love spoons before? Their Welsh gifts given as tokens of love and affection – how sweet is that!

Visit Oystermouth Castle: Built atop a limestone crag, Oystermouth castle sits majestically on a hill overlooking Mumbles and – you guessed it – has the best views over the village and the bay. Take the opportunity to join a guided tour of the castle and learn about its history. Originally built in the 12th century, there’s quite a lot to tell. Our castle guide, Haydn, had some fantastic ghost stories and theories about the castle’s origins and residents over the years. The castle is open from April through to October with special events throughout the year.

A Weekend in Mumbles - Oystermouth Castle

Pub Lunch: Mumbles is home to a handful of pubs making it a perfect spot for a pub lunch. The Dark Horse in Mumbles is an independent bar and kitchen. They use locally sourced ingredients and offer a good brunch and lunch menu, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Walk the Gower Coast Path: In the afternoon, take a walk along the Gower Coast Path , part of the Wales Coast Path network. From Mumbles, follow the promenade path to the end. Curve round the hill where the lighthouse is into Bracelet Bay. From here, continue on to Limeslade Bay for ice cream (run and raisin all the way) and then to Langland Bay. For the energetic hiker, carry further on to Caswell Bay.

We headed round to Langland Bay where the heavens opened. We took shelter under a green and white beach hut and watched the surfers in the bay bobbing on the swell. Come summer, the bay makes for a great picnic spot (there are not many cafes in the area). The route from Mumbles to Langland Bay and back took us around 2 hours including a 20-minute stop in Langland.

travel house mumbles swansea

Hit the Rooftop Gin Bar: Not to be missed in Mumbles is the ultra fun rooftop Gin and Juice . By day, it’s a brunch spot with fantastic views over the bay from an enclosed glass-windowed terrace. By night, it really comes alive as a loud, lively, low-lit bar where you’ll find all of the cool cats. We feasted on a dinner of freshly baked bread and garlic butter, olives, roasted cauliflower and a veggie burger with chips. It was the best meal of our trip!

For drinks, the real highlight is an extensive gin menu that any aficionado would be impressed by. There’s a section dedicated to Welsh gin and we sampled the local Gower gin, which was delicious. I highly recommend the GŴYR Rhosili gin which comes packed with lemon wedges. Beware: a tentative warning about the GWYR Rhosili ‘Dragon Strength’ gin which packs a punch at 60%. This bar is the perfect finish to a weekend in Swansea Bay.

Fantastic sights and things to do in Mumbles

With a colourful history ranging from a battled-over castle through to the legendary ‘Mumbles Mile’, Mumbles today is all about good coffee, independent shops, and classic piers-and-promenade seaside fun. Also lots of ice cream!

Mumbles, known also as ‘The Mumbles’, is the gateway to the Gower Peninsula, home to the singer Bonnie Tyler and – when she’s back in her beloved Wales – Catherine Zeta Jones and family.

Where is Mumbles?

Mumbles is located right on Swansea Bay , and marks the start of the Gower Peninsula, the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty . Mumbles is the perfect launchpad to explore the beaches of the Gower, with or without a car. To do it on foot, start at beautiful Bracelet Bay , and then take the Wales Coast Path through stunning scenery to surf hotspots Rotherslade Beach and Langland Bay . From either, it’s an approximately 20-minute walk back into the village.

Mumbles, Swansea, West Wales

Is there a Mumbles castle?

Slap bang in the centre of Mumbles is Oystermouth Castle , standing high on a hill and affording some of the best views out to Swansea Bay from its wall walk. Visit and explore the castle’s fascinating history, from its 12th century origins through to ownership by Queen Alina de Breos, after her release from a spell in the Tower of London. The chapel she created was recently unveiled to visitors, thanks to a major refurbishment. The castle grounds are the perfect picnic spot; pick up goodies from nearby deli Olives & Oils . In summer the grounds play host to the annual music and food extravaganza Mumbles Fest

Things to do in Mumbles

Mumbles pier.

Mumbles Pier , which opened in 1898, was designed as a Victorian pleasure pier. The pursuit of pleasure continues as its chief purpose, but with a more modern twist – Beach Hut Cafe , is a bright, airy café offering everything from full breakfasts to vegan fish and chips, an amusement arcade and games room, plus regular gigs and kids’ discos. Steps leading down from the Pier take you to a little sandy beach , which is a rockpooling haven at low tide. When the tide is low – if you check it isn’t coming in for a good while – you can walk across the beach to the two islands that give Mumbles its name. Apparently these looked (to someone! ) like a pair of breasts, or ‘mamelles’ in French, hence ‘Mumbles’.

Mumbles Pier, Swansea, West Wales

Mumbles lighthouse

The further island is home to iconic Mumbles Lighthouse , which features in many a Mumbles postcard and Instagram post. The view of the lighthouse from Bracelet Bay is particularly pretty, and if you’re peckish you can take it all in from The Lighthouse , an eatery that’s fab for families or romantic as a date spot.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Lighthouse (@thelighthouse_swansea)

The promenade and Swansea Bay Rider Land Train

The Promenade is where much of the Mumbles fun takes place. The Prom can be enjoyed on foot, by bike – Santander cycles are available for hire – or on the Swansea Bay Rider Land Train . The 72-seater train runs between Blackpill Lido and Southend Gardens : kids can hop off for a swim at one end (the water depth reaches the average adult’s shins) and, at the other, there’s a playground, crazy golf, and the eateries of the Oyster Wharf development. Gin & Juice is guaranteed to please cocktail aficionados and wow with its sweeping rooftop views, while chilled Croeso Lounge is a family fave. Located in Southend Gardens is the award-winning Gower Seafood Hut , ideal for a takeaway plate of chilli prawns or local cockles, washed down with a beer from nearby Ty Cwrw . Since the land train is hop-on/hop-off, it’s thoroughly recommended you hop off for an ice cream at Ripples , alternatively just a short walk along the Prom from Mumbles village. Owner Dennis Dwyer makes all his ice cream super-fresh, with scoops like mango sorbet and pistachio among the best this side of Italy. The views across the bay cannot be beaten. Alternatively, there's the ever popular, and also delicious, Joe’s Ice Cream Parlour .

Eating and drinking in Mumbles

Ice creams aside, Mumbles ticks a number of foodie boxes for such a small place. Newton Road is the main street that cuts a right angle up from the Prom, and where much of the eating and shopping action happens. Relatively new here is Fika , which offers gourmet bagels alongside carefully chosen wines, expertly mixed cocktails and coffee served in the prettiest pink cups. Also new and very popular is Fat Cow , a burger restaurant with jazzy art on the walls provided by the nearby Bull Jam Gallery. Just off Newton Road is trendy little Boo’s Kitchen , perfect for veggie and plant-based brunches and lunches. Just down from Boo’s is the small but perfectly formed coffee shop Microlot , almost just a hole in the wall but with a couple of indoor and outdoor perches from which to watch the world go by. Coffee is excellent, and replicated in its big brother branch, Mumbles Coffee shop , which nestles in the arcade off Newton Road offering coffee, chai and cake to be enjoyed on cosy sofas or carried off from a takeaway hatch.

The legendary ‘Mumbles Mile’ used to be a lively pub crawl that drew in crowds from near and far to try and drink a pint in the many welcoming drinking spots that used to populate the village. While the Mumbles Mile is a thing of the past now, there are still some excellent pubs and bars. Gin & Juice and Cru 42 are popular bars, while the Pilot and the Park Inn are cosy, more traditional places to sink into a pint.

Shopping in Mumbles

Stick on Newton Road for a host of independent shops and boutiques, as well as a plethora of charity shops for lovers of pre-loved. The top of the road is home to indie bookshop Cover to Cover . Next door but one is the Oyster Gallery , for coastal-themed homewares, gifts and artwork. Over the road is newcomer  Adelanté , which sells unique womenswear, fun kids’ accessories and vintage homewares and clothing. Closeout is a surfers’ and skateboarders’ paradise, with lots of eco-friendly brands and gorgeous swimwear.

At the Western edge of Swansea Bay lies the fishing village of Mumbles - the twinkling diamond of Swansea! A wonderful combination of historic buildings and modern design create a unique destination where the charming buildings of the village’s long history and the modern developments of restaurants, bars and boutique shops seem to blend together perfectly.

A RICH HISTORY  Perched above the village is Oystermouth Castle; a Norman military stronghold that still attracts thousands each year thanks to the plays and fairs held in its grounds. It has recently been renovated to include a visitor centre and glass viewing floor for people to explore the inner walls and the castle’s secrets. In more recent times, the Mumbles Pier was once the end destination for the local tram, and while the tram has long since closed, the tramway has become a walking and cycle path that leads you out to the Pier.  The RNLI have a state of the art facility at the pier and with cafés, bars, restaurants and a number of beaches, it is well worth visiting and be sure to walk out to the end.

SHOP ‘TILL YOU DROP With independent, boutique stores dotted through the streets of Mumbles and along the promenade, shopaholics will be spoilt for choice. Men’s tailors, women’s couture, leisure wear… you name it, Mumbles has it, and you can easily spend a day window shopping if nothing else! FOOD AND DRINK Tracing it’s roots back hundreds of years (perhaps longer) as a fishing village, it’s no wonder that some of the finest seafood restaurants are located in Mumbles. Alongside the fish restaurants are numerous bars and eateries serving a range of dishes to suit all palates and budgets and with a thriving microbrewery sector, many bars brew or distil their own drinks to offer a truly unique drinking and dining experience. As venues such as Castellamare, La Parilla, Bistro Pierre and many others are situated on the waterfront, you can enjoy good food and drink whilst watching the boats bobbing up and down on the bay. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Whether you are taking the children to the penny slots on the pier, enjoying the delicious homemade ice-creams on sale at Joe’s, Fortes and Verdi’s or watching the little ones explore the castle; Mumbles is geared up for young families and will not disappoint. For couples, a stroll along the promenade followed by a glass of fizz and a romantic meal for two at one of the many restaurants as the moon rises over the bay is a sure way to create memories that you will both remember forever. For groups and more mature visitors, there is enough to do for everyone to have a good time from playing golf at one of the many local courses, watching sport at the local rugby, football and cricket clubs or simply taking advantage of the location.
