Things to Do

Watchtower sightings, organized tours, where to camp, where to stay nearby, how to get there, accessibility, tips for your visit, sundarban national park (west bengal).

Sundarbans National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is best known for its magnificent tangle of mangrove trees, encompassing the largest mangrove forest in the world. The park spans 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles) at the mouth of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers, which separates the countries of India and Bangladesh and borders the Bay of Bengal. Approximately 35 percent of the park lies in India, and the remainder is located in Bangladesh. On the Indian side, 102 islands are located within Sundarbans, and just over half of them are inhabited.

The word "sundarban" means "beautiful forest" in the local Bengali dialect. This swampy forest provides a home to a rare breed of Royal Bengal Tigers know to be strong swimmers. Long stretches of nylon net fencing have been installed on forest boundaries to prevent the tigers from venturing into the villages, as it's the only place in the world where tigers still hunt humans for food. Don't go expecting to see one though, as the native tigers usually remain hidden within the park's tiger reserve, a core zone where commercial and tourist activities are prohibited. Along the outskirts, in the Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary, however, visitors can expect sightings of various reptiles, monkeys, wild boar, rare birds, and deer.

The real enjoyment of visiting Sundarbans National Park comes from appreciating its pristine, natural beauty. Sadly, some people are disappointed by their visit, usually because they go with high expectations of spotting tigers. Wildlife spotting is hampered by the fact that you cannot explore the national park on foot or by vehicle. There are no jeep safaris and boats cannot touch down anywhere along the river banks inside the national park.

Instead, take time to wander through enchanted villages, discover the local way of life, and take part in cultural performances. You can even sample honey collected by local villagers in the Sundarbans region.

Tourists can also visit the game watchtowers, the most popular of which—due to their proximity—are Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, and Dobanki. Or, spend the day cruising the waterways by boat on a wager-guided safari, in search of monkeys, crocodiles, water monitor lizards, wild boar, otter, spotted deer, and birds.

Watchtowers located throughout the park provide a way for visitors to safely view wildlife. Three easily accessible towers offer DIY, hassle-free nature viewing for independent travelers. Sajnekhali is a favorite watchtower of birdwatchers, Sudhanyakhali offers you a decent chance of seeing tigers and spotted deer, and Dobanki has a 20-foot-high enclosed canopy for panoramic views of the park and its wildlife.

Other remote watchtowers require a full day of travel by boat to get to, but the reward for the journey is a pristine natural experience, free of crowds. Burir Dabri watchtower is located on the Raimangal River. It's notably picturesque and has a canopy walk over the mangroves that leads to a viewpoint. The ruins of a 400-year-old temple can be found at Netidhopani watchtower. Visitor numbers are limited here and special permits are required. Bonnie Camp is the highest watchtower in Sundarbans, at 50 feet tall. This scenic watchtower takes about six hours to reach from Sajnekhali, yet a rest house provides an overnight stay. Jhingekhali is located on the easternmost fringe of Sundarbans National Park and is often overlooked for its extreme remoteness. Still, this watchtower offers you the best chance of seeing a tiger, as well as several species of rare birds.

There are various ways to go about visiting Sundarbans National Park, and for those who find independent travel to be logistically complicated, an organized tour provides a good option. Organized tours offer a predefined itinerary, including day tours, overnight tours, or multiple-day tours, with accommodations included. Guided tours typically include safari-style boat trips on the waterways to visit watchtowers and villages. And, most tours originate from Kolkata and drop you back off in the same location.

Before embarking on an organized tour, keep in mind a few considerations, like flexibility and privacy. Boat trips organized by hotels and tour operators will usually book a full group of people. Depending on the group's demographics, this could mean a noisy and boisterous experience that spoils the serenity of your visit. Additionally, the bigger boats are not suitable for the narrow waterways, where you're more likely to spot the park's wildlife. If this is a concern, it may be best to make independent arrangements and hire a private guide.

Due to the wildness of this national park, primitive camping is not permitted on the grounds and many of the regional "jungle camps" do not offer tented options either. The one exception is Sunderban Tiger Camp , an eco-resort that offers glamping in canvas-covered huts. Each hut is 261 square feet and can accommodate up to four people on twin beds with Wellness Health Rest mattresses. Each hut has a western-style toilet, cold showers, and a hot water geyser option. Purified water, free Wi-Fi, and a wake-up service are complimentary with your stay.

Given the ecological sensitivity of the Sundarbans area, most accommodations are simple, rather than luxurious, with an eco-friendly focus and a village feel. Power is limited (many hotels run on either solar or electricity produced by a generator), and the bathwater is not always hot. You can also book a houseboat for a completely different experience.

  • United 21 Resort-Sunderban : United 21 offers 18 deluxe, standard, or triple-bedded rooms set in a serene jungle atmosphere. All rooms come complete with air conditioning and modern amenities. An on-site restaurant provides a sampling of several Indian cuisines and jungle safaris can be organized upon request.
  • Sunderban Mangrove Retreat : Located in the Jamespore village on Satjalia island, this serene eco-friendly stay sits on the bank of the river. Choose from one of four air-conditioned executive rooms, eight air-conditioned, double-bedded cottages, or ten non-air-conditioned huts. This pristine property has four on-site ponds for fishing, and the restaurant provides local cuisine, including a catch of the day like crabs, prawns, and a wide variety of fish. The Mangrove Retreat also has two motor-driven boats that you can book for a wildlife water cruise.
  • Sundarban Houseboat : Book a one-night, two-night, or three-night stay, complete with a tour, on a Sundarban houseboat. Rooms on the boat come complete with air-conditioning, LED televisions, attached bathrooms, and freshly-cooked, exotic meals. Multi-day tours include island hopping and visiting remote villages, cruising the mangrove forest, and stopping at the watchtowers.

Sundarbans National Park can only be accessed by boat, as the main entrance is on Sajnekhali Island, where all entry fees are paid. It's located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal , where Netaji Subhash International Airport at Dumdum is situated.

Unfortunately, independent travel to the park is quite laborious. It's best to go either by boat, car, or bus, as the train—a local train that does not take reservations—may be very crowded. You can drive from Kolkata to Godkhali, Sonakhali, Namkhana, Canning, Raidighi, and Najat. Once you arrive, take a ferry or hire a boat to Sajnekhali.

Public buses depart hourly (starting at 6.30 a.m.) from Kolkata to Sonakhali on a three-hour ride. From Sonakhali, take an auto-rickshaw to Godhkali, the gateway village to Sundarbans, and then another boat to Sajnekhali.

Because Sundarbans National Park is remote in nature and surrounded by water, handicapped individuals must book an outfitter who offers special services that cater to their needs. One such option is Rudra Nature’s Sprout Boat. Nature's Sprout offers packages for "differently-abled" individuals that journey only to accessible destinations, while catering to the medical needs of its travelers. They also provide doctors and emergency equipment, should something go array.

  • Foreigners need a permit and a valid passport to enter Sundarbans National Park. A permit can be obtained from the forest department at Sajnekhali or at the West Bengal Tourism Office in Kolkata. If you travel with a tour company, they will make these arrangements for you.
  • There's a boat entry fee for all park zones, and it's compulsory to hire one guide per boat.
  • Pack warm clothes if you're visiting from November to February, as the weather is cool and dry.
  • During the summer (March through June) expect hot and humid weather, and July through September brings rains along with the monsoon season.
  • All plastic is banned in this region, although this rule has been difficult to enforce. Leave plastic water bottles and bags at home, and don't litter.
  • Make sure to carry plenty of cash, as there are no ATMs in the park.
  • Watchtowers are enclosed by fences and are often full of loud, boisterous tourists.
  • Most people spend at least one night at Sundarbans. By staying longer, however, you'll be able to visit more areas, walk or cycle around the villages, go bird watching, and see cultural performances.

Welcome to Sunderban National Park

In Sundarban National Park in West Bengal, the tiger makes his round with an unmatched stealth and grace. The air feels wet and damp, while the silence is interrupted by the melodious singing of birds and roar of motor boats. Inside these world’s largest mangrove forests, creeks and tributaries form an intricate system of networks. Sometimes, they meet each other, and at others, wander off elsewhere. Tourists out on a boat ride are given their money’s worth while crossing them. Even though you are unaware, the big cat and saltwater crocodile observe you at all times, watching every step you make. However, sometimes, look up, as there is action on the trees too. A variety of birds, from brahminy kite to whistling teals, call this their home, and declare that from time to time with a loud cry, song or chirp. More... -->

The Sunderban National Park is many things at once, a biosphere reserve, national park and tiger reserve, such is the richness of this mangrove ecosystem. What we commonly call Sunderbans is actually a large delta spread across 40,000 sq. km between India and Bangladesh! Just to give you an idea of how vast it really is, consider this. It stretches from River Hooghly in West Bengal, India, all the way to River Baleswar in Bangladesh. In this UNESCO World Heritage Site (it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987), the mangrove trees stand lazily on the mudflats, which are visible during low tides, and submerged in height tide. Its name means “beautiful forests” in the local language, and it is not hard to figure why. Another reasons are the Sundari trees, which are dominant in this mangrove area. Their uniqueness lies in their roots which shoot upwards for respiration, particularly during waterlogging during monsoons.

A Short History of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve

The history of Sunderbans can be traced as far back as 200-300 AD. It is believed that the forests of Sunderbans were leased to the nearby residents during the Mughal period, who built settlements in them. In the coming years, however, those settlements were attacked by the Portuguese and salt smugglers in the 17th century. All that remains today are their ruins, most of which can be traced at a place called Netidhopani.

It was in 1875 under the Forest Act, 1865 (Act VIII of 1865) that a large part of these forests were declared as “reserved”. Post-independence, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1977 and established as a national park on 4th May, 1984. In the year 1978, Sundarbans were declared a national park, and in 1973, they were declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger.

When to Visit Sunderban Park?

The best time to visit Sunderbans is between November to March. The weather is quite pleasant during this time and creates the perfect conditions for tiger sighting and other wildlife. You can also visit it in the summer season, or the months from April to July. Remember though, that it can get very hot during this time, with the average temperature being 43°C. A lot of tourists find the heat quite difficult to deal with, but shouldn’t pose a problem for you if you are okay with it. Monsoons are not a good time to visit Sundarbans, as most of the areas are flooded and taking a boat ride would be quite unfeasible.

Geography of Sundarban Forest

Among other things, it is the unique geography of Sunderbans which endears it to the tourists. It is a part of the world’s largest delta and home to the largest mangrove forests. In its brackish waters, mudflats and trees, reside an incredible variety of flora and fauna. It is these, along with the vegetation, that makes this place what it is, a mystery which unfolds itself with every single visit. The vast Sunderbans also houses within it rivers, islands and villages.

Flora: Inside the dense forests of Sunderbans National Park reside a rich variety of flora. The 64 plant species which are found however, have learned to survive in brackish waters and saline inundation. Some of the common species of plants which are found include Sundari tree, Golpati, Champa, Dhundul, Genwa and Hatal. It is estimated that there are about 78 species of mangroves in these forests. They are extremely important because of the important role they play in the survival of marine organisms. From a distance, these halophytes exude an aura of mystery, who knows what the darkness within has to offer.

Fauna: Wildlife tourism is a major factor behind tourists visiting Sunderbans, and rightly so. After all, you’ve heard that it is home to a rich variety of wildlife, with the Royal Bengal Tigers enjoying a large presence. Nothing makes the tourists more excited than a tiger sighting. While that majestic cat certainly deserves all the attention and spotlight, there are other kinds of birds and wildlife animals who call these mangrove forests their home.

Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, other animals found in these areas are fishing cats, macaques, leopard cats, Indian grey mongoose, wild boar, flying fox, pangolin, and Indian grey mongoose. The chital deer and rhesus monkey are common sightings.

Sundarban is also famous for its marine life, and is quite rich in it. A crocodile seated leisurely on a mudflat, basking in the afternoon sun, draws an array of reactions from onlookers. Other than the saltwater crocodile, other kinds of aqua life include red fiddler crabs and hermit crabs. While many people may not be aware of it, but Sundarban National Park is home to a large number of reptiles. Some of the more famous ones are water monitor, king cobra and rock python.

A species of river turtles called Batagur Baska (which are classified as endangered by the IUCN) are found on the Mechau Beach. They are identified by their small head, a snout which always goes upwards and an olive brown colored carapace. The barking deer also deserves a special mention, as it is found at a place called Haliday Island.

Rivers: The Sundarbans delta is formed by the coming together of three rivers, Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Besides these three main rivers, there are three other rivers which form an intriguing network of channels.

Islands: There are a number of islands dotting this region, and some of them are attractions in themselves. The most famous of them are Kalash, Henry and Netidhopani.

Villages: A number of villages lie in close proximity to Sunderbans National Park like Pakhiralay, Dayapur, Bali and Sajnekhali. Village walks are popular among tourists because they offer a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the villagers. While visiting one of these villages, you can also observe the traditional method of honey collection.

Safari Timing

Sunderbans National Park offers only boat safari to the visitors. Jeep safaris are not conducted here. The safari timing is from 8:30 AM in the morning till 4:00 PM in the evening. The entry of boats after 6:30 PM is prohibited. Although the park remains open throughout the year, however, winter season is the best time to visit it.

This route is thought to be concealed within the forest, covered in dirt and trash. This watchtower, which can accommodate 20 people at once and has a sweet water pond close by, is an interesting place to explore in Sundarban.

Jharkhali Watch Tower ( Tiger Project )

It is simple to reach Jharkhali from Kolkata, a well-known Sundarbans village close to Basanti town, using the Basanti highway.

In addition, there is a watchtower, a butterfly garden, a children’s garden, and a mini zoo. During a day trip by car, families can take advantage of interesting picnic locations along the rivers. Additionally, inexpensive small launches are offered for quick joy rides inside the Sundarbans.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

The Sundarbans Reserve Forest (SRF), located in the south-west of Bangladesh between the river Baleswar in the East and the Harinbanga in the West, adjoining to the Bay of Bengal, is the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world. Lying between latitude 21° 27′ 30″ and 22° 30′ 00″ North and longitude 89° 02′ 00″ and 90° 00′ 00″ East and with a total area of 10,000 km 2 , 60% of the property lies in Bangladesh and the rest in India. The land area, including exposed sandbars, occupies 414,259 ha (70%) with water bodies covering 187,413 ha (30%).

The three wildlife sanctuaries in the south cover an area of 139,700 ha and are considered core breeding areas for a number of endangered species. Situated in a unique bioclimatic zone within a typical geographical situation in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal, it is a landmark of ancient heritage of mythological and historical events. Bestowed with magnificent scenic beauty and natural resources, it is internationally recognized for its high biodiversity of mangrove flora and fauna both on land and water.

The immense tidal mangrove forests of Bangladeshs’ Sundarbans Forest Reserve, is in reality a mosaic of islands of different shapes and sizes, perennially washed by brackish water shrilling in and around the endless and mind-boggling labyrinths of water channels. The site supports exceptional biodiversity in its terrestrial, aquatic and marine habitats; ranging from micro to macro flora and fauna. The Sundarbans is of universal importance for globally endangered species including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Ganges and Irawadi dolphins, estuarine crocodiles and the critically endangered endemic river terrapin (Batagur baska).  It is the only mangrove habitat in the world for Panthera tigris tigris species.

Criterion (ix): The Sundarbans provides a significant example of on-going ecological processes as it represents the process of delta formation and the subsequent colonization of the newly formed deltaic islands and associated mangrove communities. These processes include monsoon rains, flooding, delta formation, tidal influence and plant colonization. As part of the world’s largest delta, formed from sediments deposited by three great rivers; the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna, and covering the Bengal Basin, the land has been moulded by tidal action, resulting in a distinctive physiology.

Criterion (x): One of the largest remaining areas of mangroves in the world, the Sundarbans supports an exceptional level of biodiversity in both the terrestrial and marine environments, including significant populations of globally endangered cat species, such as the Royal Bengal Tiger. Population censuses of Royal Bengal Tigers estimate a population of between 400 to 450 individuals, a higher density than any other population of tigers in the world.

The property is the only remaining habitat in the lower Bengal Basin for a wide variety of faunal species. Its exceptional biodiversity is expressed in a wide range of flora; 334 plant species belonging to 245 genera and 75 families, 165 algae and 13 orchid species. It is also rich in fauna with 693 species of wildlife which includes; 49 mammals, 59 reptiles, 8 amphibians, 210 white fishes, 24 shrimps, 14 crabs and 43 mollusks species. The varied and colourful bird-life found along the waterways of the property is one of its greatest attractions, including 315 species of waterfowl, raptors and forest birds including nine species of kingfisher and the magnificent white-bellied sea eagle.

The Sundarbans is the biggest delta, back water and tidal phenomenon of the region and thus provides diverse habitats for several hundreds of aquatic, terrestrial and amphibian species. The property is of sufficient size to adequately represent its considerably high floral and faunal diversity with all key values included within the boundaries. The site includes the entire landscape of mangrove habitats with an adequate surrounding area of aquatic (both marine and freshwater) and terrestrial habitats, and thus all the areas essential for the long term conservation of the Sundarbans and its rich and distinct biodiversity

The World Heritage property is comprised of three wildlife sanctuaries which form the core breeding area of a number of species of endangered wildlife. Areas of unique natural beauty, ethno botanical interest, special marine faunal interest, rivers, creeks, islands, swamps, estuaries, mud flats, and tidal flats are also included in the property. The boundaries of the property protect all major mangrove vegetation types, areas of high floral and faunal values and important bird areas. The integrity of the property is further enhanced by terrestrial and aquatic buffer zones that surround, but are not part of the inscribed property.

Natural calamities such as cyclones, have always posed threats on the values of the property and along with saline water intrusion and siltation, remain potential threats to the attributes. Cyclones and tidal waves cause some damage to the forest along the sea-land interface and have previoulsy caused occasional considerable mortality among some species of fauna such as the spotted deer. Over exploitation of both timber resources and fauna, illegal hanting and trapping, and agricultural encroachment also pose serious threats to the values of the property and its overall integrity.

Protection and management requirements

The property is composed of three wildlife sanctuaries and has a history of effective national legal protection for its land, forest and aquatic environment since the early 19th century. All three wildlife sanctuaries were established in 1977 under the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment) Act, 1974, having first been gazetted as forest reserves in 1878. Along with the Forest Act, 1927, the Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment) Act 1974, control activities such as entry, movement, fishing, hunting and extraction of forest produces. A number of field stations established within Sundarbans West assist in providing facilities for management staff. There are no recognised local rights within the reserved forest with entry and collection of forest products subject to permits issued by the Forest Department.

The property is currently well managed and regularly monitored by established management norms, regular staff and individual administrative units. The key objective of management is to manage the property to retain the biodiversity, aesthetic values and integrity. A delicate balance is needed to maintain and facilitate the ecological process of the property on a sustainable basis. Another key management priority is the maintenance of ongoing ecological and hydrological process which could otherwise be threatened by ongoing developmental activities outside the property. Subject to a series of successively more comprehensive management plans since its declaration as reserved forest, a focus point of many of these plans is the management of tigers, together with other widlife, as an integral part of forest management that ensures the sustainable harvesting of forest products while maintaining the coastal zone in a way that meets the needs of the local human population. The working plans for the Sundarbans demonstrate a progressive increase in the understanding of the management requirements and the complexity of prescriptions made to meet them.

Considerable research has been conducted on the Sundarbans wildlife and ecosystem. International input and assistance from WWF and the National Zoological Park, the Smithsonian Institution as well as other organisations has assisted with the development of working plans for the property, focusing on conservation and management of wildlife.

The Sundarbans provides sustainable livelihoods for millions of people in the vicinity of the site and acts as a shelter belt to protect the people from storms, cyclones, tidal surges, sea water seepage and intrusion. The area provides livelihood in certain seasons for large numbers of people living in small villages surrounding the property, working variously as wood-cutters, fisherman, honey gatherers, leaves and grass gatherers.

Tourism numbers remain relatively low due to the difficult access, arranging transport and a lack of facilities including suitable accommodation. Mass tourism and its impacts are unlikely to affect the values of the property. While the legal protection afforded the property prohibit a number of activities within the boundaries illegal hunting, timber extraction and agricultural encroachment pose potential threats to the values of the property. Storms, cyclones and tidal surges up to 7.5 m high, while features of the areas, also pose a potential threat with possible increased frequency as a result of climate change.

Explore the world's largest mangrove forest

Get off the beaten path in the Bangladeshi Sundarbans.

From above, the Sundarbans mangrove forest is an impressive labyrinth of colors and textures. The clear blues of the Bay of Bengal run into the murky waters of criss-crossing river systems lined by emerald foliage.

“Drifting down the river for a few days is like escaping into a different world,” says Sabine Roers, founder of Chili Reisen travel company.

The lush expanse, which straddles India and Bangladesh , is steeped in myth. Throughout history, locals have worshipped the goddess Bonbibi , or “lady of the forest.” According to one version of the story, Bonbibi was the daughter of a Sufi fakir, brought from Saudi Arabia to the jungles of South Asia. There, she was chosen by God to battle the creature Dokkhin Rai, who took the form of a tiger and preyed on locals. Instead of killing Dokkhin Rai, Bonbibi made a bargain that he could not attack anyone who worshipped her.

Today, some locals still pray to Bonbibi for protection before venturing into the forest.

In addition to the Bengal tiger —the only one of its species adapted to a mangrove environment—the forest has a wide array of wildlife, including rare species like the Indian python and Irrawaddy dolphins. Because of its wildlife and unique ecosystem, the Sundarbans was inscribed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

The animals’ habitat is under threat, however. Rising sea levels are swallowing the forest, and increasing water salinity is damaging plant and marine life—this has a domino effect on larger animals. Under the strain of land loss, people are also encroaching on the animals’ habitat, tearing down trees to make space for farmland, and poaching. A 2004 census estimated around 440 tigers in the Sundarbans, and the population has steadily declined. More recent surveys estimate around 106 tigers in the Bangladeshi region.

Conservationists, along with the government, are working to preserve the Sundarbans and its wildlife. “We must do everything possible to save the remaining population and help people and tigers to coexist,” says Raquibul Amin, Bangladesh country director for the International Union for Conservation of Nature . “The Bengal tiger is the national icon of Bangladesh.”

How to get there

The forest is accessible from Bangladesh and India. Visiting from the Bangladeshi side is more difficult, but rewarding, offering remote areas to explore. Many visitors fly to Jessore and take one of the airline buses to Khulna, a thriving town that sits above the entrance to the Sundarbans. Trains and overnight buses also run from Dhaka to Khulna. In India, tours leave from Kolkata.

How to visit

“Overnight trips offer the chance to get off the beaten track and enjoy the calm of the Sundarbans,” says Didarul Absar, founder of Bangladesh Eco Tours .

Several overnight tours and day trips into the Sundarbans operate out of Kolkata. Khulna has fewer options, but the number of operators is steadily increasing. Most all-inclusive tours take guests out on well-kitted out boats, walks through the forest, and early morning excursions to spot wildlife. Tourists can also visit as part of larger tours around Bangladesh, with transport arranged from Dhaka.

Day trips are available from Kolkata, India, and Mongla, Bangladesh, a small town downriver from Khulna—these are popular with local Bangladeshi tourists. Absar emphasizes the importance ethical tourism in the Sundarbans to protect the fragile ecosystem and support local communities. Travelers should use local tour operators who employ local people. They should also respect the wildlife and the environment: don’t litter, be mindful of noise pollution, and don’t disturb the animals.

The best time to go is during drier, cooler winter months from October to February. After February, temperatures heat up. Some locals prefer to visit between June and August, when monsoon rains awaken the luscious forest, but many tour operators do not operate in this season because of the risk of flooding and cyclones.

"Home of the Bengal Tigers"

Sundarbans tourism.

Known for hosting the biggest mangrove forests in the world, Sundarbans National Park is located around 110 Km south of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. It is also a Tiger Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve famous for being the home of the Royal Bengal tigers, among others, including roaring rivers and beautiful estuaries. Sundarbans National Park is a part of the Sundarban delta, which extends into Bangladesh. It is a UNESCO world heritage site with a large variety of birds and animal species, including reptiles such as salt-water crocodiles.

Shared between India and Bangladesh, the Sundarbans meaning beautiful forest, was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1984. This area has a quiet charm that amazes visitors with the simplicity and uniqueness of its ecological balance despite offering habitat to some of the most dynamic and awe-inspiring flora and fauna. These forests are, in fact, the last remaining stands of the mighty jungles which once covered the Gangetic plains. Since 1966, the Sundarbans have been a wildlife sanctuary, and it is estimated that there are over 400 Royal Bengal Tigers residing in it. This forest has the largest number of Sundari trees. Sundarbans epitomize wilderness with its meandering rivers, springs, creeks and estuaries. It was a declared Tiger Reserve, home to the Royal Bengal Tiger - an almost extinct species that swim in the saline water and are often called man-eaters. Other endangered species in the Bioreserve are Batagur baska, King Crabs, Olive Ridley and Turtles. You can also find jungle fowls, giant lizards, spotted deer, wild boar, and crocodiles in these forests. The Siberian ducks are another famous attraction here. Besides this, there are over 64 varieties of Mangroves such as Goran, Genwa, Dhundal, Garjan, Kankra, Sundari and Passur. Make sure to visit the Nilkamalor Hiron Point and Katka viewpoints, which offer fantastic views of animals in the wilderness. Also, enjoy the mudflats called Chargheri Char, where you can enjoy coastal trekking.
