With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It covers an area of 32, 87,263 sq. km, extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. As the 7th largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity.

Fringed by the Great Himalayas in the north, it stretches southwards and at the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. As you travel the expanse of the country, you are greeted by diverse nuances of cuisines, faiths, arts, crafts, music, nature, lands, tribes, history and adventure sports. India has a mesmeric conflation of the old and the new. As the bustling old bazaars rub shoulders with swanky shopping malls, and majestic monuments accompany luxurious heritage hotels, the quintessential traveller can get the best of both worlds. Head to the mountains, enjoy a beach retreat or cruise through the golden Thar, India has options galore for all.

Top Places to Visit in London

There is a multitude of things to do and see in London. Here are the attractions that you will find on your London itinerary:

The Tower of London and Tower Bridge

The beautiful London Tower has performed many varied roles throughout the years, every one of which is equally eccentric. This majestic World Heritage site is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Great Britain that offers hours of curiosity for tourists to take in and marvel at the many tales this place played a premise to.

The 17th-century Kings Line with impressive displays of royal arms and armour is located inside the great White Tower constructed in 1078 by William the Conqueror. At Veena World, we offer great discounts on London tourist packages so that you can plan your trip to London at an affordable price.

The British Museum

There are more than 13 million ancient world artefacts within the British Museum that showcase one of the world's finest antiquity collections. It's difficult to know where to begin as there are plenty of invaluable items from Syria, Babylon, China, Europe, and many more places. But most people go first into the most famous artefacts in the museum: the controversial Parthenon Elgin Marbles, Rosetta Stone, Ramses II, Egyptian tombs, and Roman silver, known as Mildenhall Treasure, a stunning 4th-century collection.

A large on-site library with an exhaustive range of volumes on ancient, historical, and art history, as well as games and souvenirs for children, is available in one of the shops which offer antiques and jewellery. Make sure to keep this one on your list during your London tour package from India.

The London Eye

The London Eye is a large Ferris wheel in London, located on the South Bank of the Thames.  It is widely considered the Millennium Wheel. Your London itinerary must include this place. It was created in 2000 to celebrate the millennium in London and is also the biggest observer wheel in Europe.

The London Eye offers tourists a magnificent lookout of the top of the town through a private glass capsule. The London Eye also provides a 4D experience where guests can have multi-sensory elements such as sweat, bubbles, and wind.

The Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museums, (aka the V&A), belong to a collection of the Natural History and Science Museums in South Kensington. The exhibitions feature pottery and glass, textiles and costumes, silver and jewellery, ironwork, sculpture, prints, and photographs, and are categorized into four main categories: Artwork, metalwork, earthenware, and word & image. A definite inclusion within your London package from Mumbai, this large museum cannot be visited in one visit; decide in advance which sections you wish to see most.

Westminster Abbey

Located on the edge of many famous sights of London such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Palace, Abbey is one of the best churches worldwide and sees a cumulative footfall of over a million tourists from all over the world. That’s one big reason to include Westminster Abbey in your itinerary for vacation packages to London. It has existed since the year 960 after Christ. The church of St. Peter's at Westminster is formally referred to as the dean and chapter of the town. This area saw over sixteen royal weddings and was a tomb of notable people throughout history.

Hyde Park is the largest open space in London that covers a surface area of 350 acres and has been a tourist destination since 1635. The Serpentine, a man-made lake of the 18th century that’s famous for boating and bathing, is one of the centrepieces of the park. Another standout in Hyde Park is Apsley House, the first Duke of Wellington's previous house, and was bought in Waterloo following his historic victory. Make sure to add this one to your London travel package.

St. Paul Cathedral

St Paul's Cathedral stands on the site of a Romanesque temple – the largest and most famous churches in London – certainly one of the most magnificent cathedrals in the world. The earlier church was destroyed in the 1666 Grand Fire, and the reconstruction was constructed by Sir Christopher Wren. Veena World offers exciting budget-friendly vacation packages to London. 29 Must-Try Indian Restaurants in London, From Michelin Stars to Street Food Essentials

By Sarah James

29 MustTry Indian Restaurants in London From Michelin Stars to Street Food Essentials

Indian restaurants in London are stealing the culinary spotlight like never before, with delectable restaurants highlighting Indian cuisine sprawling the capital. The spice route is hotter than ever, thanks to new openings introducing regional variations and fresh takes on traditional recipes. From Michelin-starred celeb favorites to no-frills restaurants ideal for midweek comfort food, these are the most delicious Indian restaurants in London to tuck in for lunch or supper.

What area of London has the best Indian food?

It might seem surprising, but our expert food editors have coined Mayfair and Soho as the hottest locations for London's best Indian restaurants. These two neighborhoods boast everything from Gymkhana , a Michelin-starred fine dining experience, to Kricket , a creative take on Indian cooking combining Mumbai and London's flavors. So whether you're in town for a few days or a local Londoner looking for Indian food, you can't go wrong with these spots.

The Tamil Prince

The Tamil Prince, Islington

At the Tamil Prince , food is served tapas style as it's ready, fresh from the small kitchen which is visible through a large glass window from the dining room. Okra fries and onion bhajis kick things off, dipped in the fiery mint chutney—hold off if spice doesn’t agree with you. Paneer masala is an explosion in the mouth, with tender chunks of Indian cheese smothered in the rich sauce. Pile it on heaps of sweet coconut pilau rice and you may wonder if you’ve moved straight onto dessert (no complaints here). The hefty cocktail list does a good job of extending sittings. Drinks are the domain of Bar Termini alumni Simone Pugi; make sure to try the signature Prince cocktail, made with cardamom rum, rose water, and lime, topped with a branded, edible rice paper circle. — Connor Sturges

Bibi, Mayfair

In the heart of Mayfair, BiBi ’s ethos is inspired by traditional Indian cuisine and the personal memories and family history of esteemed chef, Chet Sharma. Opulent decor—think red-tiled kitchens, dark wooden countertops, chequerboard flooring, and paisley-patterned chairs—make the space a worthy opponent of the glamorous haunts nearby. The menu, which is designed for sharing, consists of three sections with seven or eight small plates each. Order the oysters—lightly poached in lime, coconut, and fermented chili—for a zingy start, or the Orkney scallops for a creamier, more textured take on ceviche. From the main courses, go for the creamy, nutty buffalo-milk braised paneer, and the khatti meethi cod for sweet-and-sour style, melt-in-your-mouth fish. — Olivia Morelli

Gymkhana, Mayfair

Gymkhana has an excellent reputation for fancy fare that leaves you feeling truly satisfied. Taking inspiration from the old gymkhana clubs of India, the polished dark timber and rich printed fabric transports you away from central London in an instant. The tasting menu is a gorgeous treat but will require an empty stomach—portions are generous and full of flavor, from the cull yaw mutton samosa to start and the cardamom kheer to the mango sorbet pudding. As with many memorable restaurants, it’s the service that really sets Gymkhana apart from its competitors, so don’t be shy when it comes to asking for advice on what to order. — Abigail Malbon

Pali Hill, Fitzrovia

Named after one of Mumbai’s oldest neighborhoods, Pali Hill delves into some of the finest flavor-packed regional dishes from every corner of the country. Sit on the side-street terrace or cozy up among colorful cushions in the Art Deco-inspired interior, admiring the specially commissioned Indian artworks adorning the walls. Kick things off with a boozy lassi—a refreshing drink of yogurt, honey, and fresh mango blended with a shot of rum—and a papadi chat, topped with spiced yogurt, red and yellow tomato, pomegranate, mint, and tamarind chutney.

Move on to the main event of big plates, tandoor, and grills, all cooked following house recipes that use traditional techniques. The sea bass steamed in banana leaf with raw mango, mint, coriander and lime is the star of the show, paired perfectly with the seasonal grilled asparagus with pahadi bhaang jeera (hempseed) chutney and a glass of the Grüner Veltliner. Finish with the mango cheesecake or the passionfruit gola—shaved ice with a sweet burst—which is perfect for cleansing the palate. — Cordelia Aspinall

Trishna, Marylebone

Aloo tokri chaat is a well-known street-food staple in India: deep-fried potatoes are topped with spices, yogurt, tamarind sauce, mint, and pomegranate—a treat that's sweet, sour, tangy, crunchy, and spicy all at the same time. The Sethi siblings, who own Michelin-starred Trishna in the heart of Marylebone, know a good thing when they taste it, which is why they start their menu off with this popular roadside snack. What follows is an exploration of the country’s coast—moving from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu—with a strong focus on vegetables and seafood that makes for a welcome change from the more common meat-heavy northern dishes found across London.

Try the Gujarat Cosmo made with a home-brewed rose-petal tea or a gin and tonic garnished to perfection. Then embark on a voyage across southern India, opting for the Taste of Trishna’s Koliwada with intricately decorated small plates that blend smoke and spice in impressive dishes such as stuffed soft-shell crab. Delicious curries include the Iyengar Aubergine Varuval made with coconut, dry red chili, shallots, and curry leaf, and the Makai Saag, a creamed spinach and sweetcorn, which is served with lentil dal and truffled mushroom pilau. — Emma Russell

Amaya

Amaya, Knightsbridge

If there are any preconceptions of a curry house, consider them banished at Amaya 's door. This is a slick, Michelin-star dining experience from Camellia Punjabi with dimmed lighting illuminating hardwood tables and terracotta statues. At the back is its open kitchen—the first in London—a glowing, surprisingly small, streamlined operation, backlit with shelves of flavored oils and broken into sections depending on whether a dish is flame-grilled, cooked in traditional tandoor clay oven pots, or freshly picked out of the fridge-cold herb garden. Everything is cooked to order so don’t expect any heavy, mulled flavors; think more elegantly spiced Indian tapas.

There's an emphasis on seafood, so expect a healthy offering of dishes such as rock oyster bhajitas, griddled king scallops, and tandoori wild prawns, as well as chargrilled sea bass and ginger and lime crab. Some of the highlights are in the unexpected, such as the crispy cabbage and noodle salad. On top of all of that, there’s also a seriously considered wine list, and an inventive cocktail menu—the mirchi martini is a true treat.

Gunpowder—a tiny homey restaurant run by Harneet and Devina Baweja—has been serving Indian small plates in Spitalfields...

Gunpowder, various locations

Gunpowder —a tiny, homey restaurant run by Harneet and Devina Baweja—has been serving Indian small plates in Spitalfields since 2015. New this year is their second spot, a much bigger restaurant, in a development that has views of Tower Bridge. The best bit? The new space means you can finally book for large groups. Other than the size, the two joints are satisfyingly similar—though this one swaps the original’s brick-and-wood aesthetic with polished concrete interiors, zinc surfaces, and terracotta tones. Plus, they both dish up the very popular spice-encrusted Kashmiri lamb chops and spicy venison with a vermicelli doughnut.

Also delicious is the succulent Chettinad pulled duck. But it's one of the simplest plates on the menu that is our favorite: the signature aloo chaat, a mound of potatoes piled with yogurt and spiced-tamarind-and-date chutney. It's the perfect complement to the rest of the sharing plates. You won’t find naan on the menu at Gunpowder and you might not even need to order rice, but we find it hard to believe there's anyone that won't be won over by this inventive and flavor-packed menu. — Tabitha Joyce

Kutir, Chelsea

Set in a townhouse across the road from the Saatchi Gallery, chef Rohit Ghai and front-of-house Abhishake Sangwan's Kutir takes its theme from hunting expeditions in the Indian countryside. You ring the bell before being guided into a dining space of pistachio-green walls with mirrors and prints of elephants and tigers—the nature theme extends to vibrant bird-print panels on the bar and flower-branch lights and hypnotic tree wallpaper elsewhere.

For the full showcase of Ghai's skills, the Signature Expedition (one of three tasting menus) is packed with satisfyingly rich meat dishes and just-right spicy seafood— standouts among them are the crunchy prawn masala and velvety coconut sea bass with mussels. And when you feel certain you cannot fit in dessert, a tempting Valrhona-chocolate and banana square appears. — Katharina Hahn

Tamarind, Mayfair

Tamarind ’s been a steadfast fixture on London ’s Indian fine-dining scene for 24 years: old-school, elegant, and the first restaurant of its kind to win a Michelin star . The menu focuses on small plates and light tandoor grills—start with plump scallops swimming in a red lentil and curry sauce, meaty coconut and chili sea bass, or sensational lamb cutlets sealed with a gently spiced pistachio crumb. The chicken biryani with a pastry lid that’s ceremoniously cracked open at the table is always a good choice, as are the tender lamb osso bucco and a Keralan prawn curry mopped up with slithers of fluffy garlic naan and dollops of hot-pink raita.

There’s plenty for vegetarians too, or those who fancy something a bit healthier and fresher (making this a popular lunchtime spot). Try the brightly colored kale and papaya salads, and—a must-order—caramelized Brussels sprouts in a chestnut and mustard-seed sauce. — Teddy Wolstenholme

Soho Wala, Soho

Before you’ve even had time to order a gin and tonic at Soho Wala , fresh, miniature poppadoms with parmesan appear on your table alongside a bus-shaped napkin holder with the rather unexpected—but charming—message printed along the side: “For use in any kind of crisis." The only crisis is how quickly the poppadoms vanish, but you’ll soon forget when fragrant plates start to arrive.

Head chef Rajesh Parmar produces good, easy-to-order food that is comforting to its core and confidently fuss-free. The kali daal has an earthy texture with a good kick of heat that will bring a flush to your cheeks and comes with discs of light, buttery choor choor naan to scoop it up (those napkins come in handy). The bhelpuri, meanwhile—puffed rice and vegetables topped with pomegranate seeds, crunchy gram flour sev, and tamarind sauce—displays Parmar’s aptitude at balancing flavors and textures from Northern India (bhelpuri is often associated with Mumbai ). — Anna Prendergast

Kahani, Chelsea

Kahani , which means 'story' in Urdu, is the first restaurant from chef Peter Joseph, who had been at Michelin-starred Tamarind for 14 years. Its elegant location, just off Sloane Street, has been reflected in the interiors: velvet chairs, low lighting, and marble tables. Joseph serves up traditional Indian dishes using seasonal, British ingredients with a little influence from Spanish tapas culture. Menu highlights include the soft-shell crab with Mangalorean spices, smoked Malabar prawns with turmeric, and coconut and—the chef’s personal favorite—marinated tandoori broccoli, served on an artistic splatter of honey and crumbled poppadoms.

For those who have a sweet tooth, the medley of kulfis is a must—an Indian take on ice cream, in which eggs are replaced with evaporated milk to get a softer, creamier taste. And do try the special JCB No. 47 Brut from Mahārāshtra, an Indian sparkling wine named in honor of the country’s independence from Britain in 1947. — Luzrezia Worthington

Theres something pleasingly jewelbox about the interior of Sohos Tamarind Kitchen with its dark wood panels bluestriped...

Tamarind Kitchen, Soho

There’s something pleasingly jewel-box about the interior of Soho ’s Tamarind Kitchen (the little sister to Michelin-starred Tamarind) with its dark wood panels, blue-striped banquettes, and pomegranate-red walls hung with shiny brass plates. A new menu focuses on three grills—the tandoor, hot griddle, and charcoal—and all the wonderful things you can flame on them (ask the brilliant manager Arvind Chavhan for his recommendations).

Order small plates of smoked spicy chicken tikka, watercress seekh filed with onion raita, super-tasty chargrilled seabass with coconut and chili, meaty (and yet meat-free) lotus-root kebab, and tangerine-bright Kerala prawn curry as good as any you’ll taste in Fort Cochin. Accompanying it all are rotis hot off the heat with a trio of chutneys: tomato, fiery aubergine, and peach. And to finish, go for a rich and sticky gulab jamun with ginger kulfi and a colorful tropical trifle with pistachio sponge and mango jelly. — Gráinne McBride

Dishoom, Soho

First things first: expect a queue at Dishoom . And if you can stick it out, you'll be met with a bustling space styled on a Bombay café complete with spinning ceiling fans and vintage magazine prints on the walls. Opt for the lamb biriani, the bhel (puffed rice with a tangy tamarind chutney), and the black dal. But, best of all, we like Dishoom at breakfast (which is much easier, reservation-wise) because the sticky char-striped streaky bacon naan is excellent. If you're really hungry, go for The Big Bombay which comes with peppery Shropshire pork sausages, masala baked beans, grilled field mushrooms, and homemade buns.

Dishoom has multiplied since it arrived in Covent Garden in 2010, but it's doing so at a steady rate with five restaurants in London and one in Edinburgh . While this joint off Soho 's Carnaby Street is our favorite, the Shoreditch courtyard is particularly lovely too. Plus, one of the latest Indian restaurants in London to open its doors is Dishoom's newest outpost in Canary Wharf. — Tabitha Joyce

Brigadiers, The City

Unlike its neighbors, Brigadiers is not a chain but it is from the same team behind Gymkhana in Mayfair so you know you're in excellent hands. Unlike its fine-dining sibling, this City spot is themed as an Indian gastropub. Settle down in a booth (in a room without a screen) because their barbecue take on Indian fare is sizzling. Small-plate starters include skewers of Afghani lamb, smoked aubergine rotis, and the must-order chili chicken lettuce cups. Even the pappadums are amazing, with four different recipes on display.

Mains include plates of perfectly-grilled meats, from guinea fowl reshmi kebabs to tandoori lamb. Almost everything packs a fiery punch so order plenty of the sesame and cucumber raita to pile on everything. In addition to the two main dining rooms, there are a handful of private rooms making this a great spot for a party. — Tabitha Joyce

Benares London

Benares, Mayfair

This is one of the stalwarts of upscale Indian cooking in London. Benares ' first gained a star under Atul Kochhar in 2007 and it’s been impressing diners with its generous servings of traditional-meets-modern dishes ever since. Now under the leadership of Exec Chef Sameer Taneja, it's a great place if you're looking to make an evening out of your meal. Kick off with a Passion Fruit Chutney Martini in the red-and-black bar. Mini poppadoms arrive at your table in the low-lit mirrored dining room, waiting to be slathered in apricot, gooseberry, and pickled-carrot dips.

Next up is a delicious Samosa Ragda Tartlet—crushed warm potato on Carom seed Tartlet. The scallops are a standout starter, baked in a coconut curry to keep in the flavor. For mains, there’s smoked chili marinated tandoori lamb cutlets with a spiced spinach purée and a hearty dish of roasted duck with crispy semolina bread. Keep it light (sort of) for dessert, with tangy mango and raspberry kulfi and rose bhapa doi (baked yogurt) with hibiscus-tea jelly. — Gráinne McBride

Darjeeling Express, Soho

Owner Asma Khan is a self-taught cook and previously a much-loved supper-club host. The open-plan kitchen inside Darjeeling Express , her first restaurant, is run by a team of women who, similarly, have no formal training—they cook from the heart, showcasing Khan's passion for traditional North Indian, Bengali, and Hyderabadi dishes. Aromatic mutton kebabs are stuffed with hung yogurt and fresh mint, while a slow-cooked Bengali-style goat curry is strewn with spice-soaked potatoes. The restaurant's steel-blue walls display a storyboard of pictures from Khan's childhood and the slatted wood benches, concrete tables, and Victorian tile patches are inspired by her childhood home. This is a personal project from an exceptional chef.

Jikoni, Marylebone

A homely spot with a menu that draws upon East Africa and the Middle East as well as Asia, Jikoni has the look of an arty aunt's house with its mix of Indian printed tablecloths, wicker chairs, and mismatched china. Sit back, get cozy, and enjoy reinvented brunch classics such as tamarind and pineapple glazed bacon with fenugreek waffles and fennel slaw, or poached egg and chili pickled cauliflower on caramelized pineapple piña colada pancakes. Also worth ordering are the lobster khichdee with a spicy moolie broth and coconut chutney, a green bean and cashew nut thoran, and the Pondicherry prawn puffs. To finish, indulge in childhood treats including peanut brittle and a light banana cake with miso butterscotch. — Amandip Uppal

Kricket, Soho

This incredible restaurant began as a pop-up in a 20-foot shipping container in Brixton. It wasn't long before all of London wanted a chair at chef Will Bowlby's mini kitchen table. Less than two years later, Kricket opened its first bricks-and-mortar restaurant in Soho. The design is a modern memoir to Mumbai , with bare walls, rough plastering, and large communal tables in a dimly lit basement.

The menu brings together the tastes of Mumbai and London, with British ingredients used to make the most of authentic flavors, aromas, and spices, inspired by Bowlby's first-hand experience of working in India's largest city. Guests are smitten with dishes such as crispy samphire pakoras, Keralan fried chicken, curry-leaf mayonnaise, pickled mouli, and tandoori monkfish. But if you order just one thing, make it the roast pumpkin plopped in a sweet spicy makhani sauce. It's worth noting that parties of four can book—useful in Soho. — Amandip Uppal

Bombay Bustle, Mayfair

From the brains behind Jamavar, Bombay Bustle is an exciting Maddox Street opening. Interiors are inspired by the bustling streets, and famed railways with booth seating that mirrors an old first-class railway coach and station-style signage to differentiate between the bar (the spot is so buzzy that you could happily just visit for drinks) and dining areas.

Come for the collection of gin cocktails, but stay for the small plates—favorites include the green chili and red onion bahji fritters, and the trio of spicy duck dosas. Then, there’s a tandoor menu featuring chaat masala chicken, as well as a tasty Cornwall lamb chop. For those who prefer curry, the Keralan fish is made with coconut milk and tamarind; and the paneer butter masala comes with charred cottage cheese, peppers, fresh tomatoes, and fenugreek. — Tabitha Joyce

Tandoor Chop House, Charing Cross

This is where a classic Brit chop house meets a traditional smoky North Indian eatery. The interiors of Tandoor Chop House are stripped-back but offset by a stunning mosaic-tiled floor and three large brass tandoor ovens. Order from the select cuts of meat, including a moist masala-boti-rubbed rib-eye, Amritsari lamb chops, and fiery black-pepper chicken tikka, as well as a classic British masala chicken in a marinade of hung curd, fresh, garlic, ginger, chili, and smoky spices. As an alternative to meat, there's also a whole tandoor-roasted cauliflower and delicious fish specials to choose from. The simple butter naans are pillowy soft, but the bone-marrow butter naan is the one to try. Be sure to end your meal with the sweet brûlée made from barbecue pineapple and chai. — Amandip Uppal

Cinnamon Bazaar, Covent Garden

A familiar face in the national media, Vivek Singh is a master of high-end feasting and is constantly exposing us to new tastes. Cinnamon Bazaar is his fourth restaurant (The Cinnamon Club is probably his best-known) and draws inspiration and interpretation from the colors, food, and energetic atmosphere of India's old spice markets. Interior doors are parrot-green and a statement ceiling is hung with baskets and panels of hot-pink silk draped to create an awning. While you're perusing the menu, order a Bazaar Old Fashioned cocktail made with Indian scotch, coconut sugar, and burnt cinnamon. Main courses include Indo-Chinese chicken wings with burnt chiles and double-cooked pork belly with curried yogurt, barley, pomegranate, and broccoli-smoked raita.

The best bit about the Cinnamon Bazaar is its roaming chaat cart, which allows guests a chance to pick ingredients and spices to create their own bespoke chaat, a crispy-crunchy-spicy-tangy Indian street food. — Amandip Uppal

Chourangi indian restaurant

Chourangi, Marble Arch

Named after a neighborhood in the vibrant city of Calcutta, Chourangi is fairly new to the beating heart of London’s food scene. Situated in Marble Arch, the menu is a contemporary fusion of European, Mogul, and Chinese flavors adapted from Bengal's rich 300-year-old history. Starters include prawn cutlet, a dish commonly enjoyed in Kolkata by local children as an after-school snack, and lotus stem potato chaat, a palette cleanser of sweet potato, pomegranate seeds, and crispy lotus stem on a bed of fresh yogurt.

The main dishes are large and best-enjoyed family-style, spanning steamed basmati rice and freshly made in-house Calcutta naan, alongside the tiger prawn malai curry (which is served in a coconut), and daak bungalow chicken curry. For dessert, the saffron pistachio kulfi is a must—vaguely resembling marzipan, this creamy ice lolly is a fun way to wind down the evening. — Megan Wilkes

Jamavar, Mayfair

Named after a type of intricate and vibrant 16th-century Kashmiri shawl, Jamavar is a stunning restaurant in the heart of Mayfair with a menu created by chef Surender Mohan that celebrates his love of authentic dishes from both the palatial north and coastal south. On the list are a wide range of specialties from all over India, but it's the exquisite seafood menu that really stands out. Try the wonderful soft scallops which are served with crispy puffed rice, or the delicate stone-bass tikka, which is soaked in milk and whole spices before being roasted in the tandoor and served with avocado chutney. — Amandip Uppal

Café Spice Namasté, Whitechapel

Jovial TV chef Cyrus Todiwala is the godfather of contemporary Parsi cooking, famous for bringing his unique Persian-Indian style to the London food scene. A short stroll from the Tower of London, Café Spice Namasté is housed in a Grade II-listed former magistrates court, with large stained-glass windows providing a gentle grandeur. The menu is packed with knowledge and some seriously unusual ingredients: this is the place to try rare meat dishes such as ostrich bhuna. But also come for the goat curry, which is wonderfully deep and meaty, or the Goan prawns that come in a thick, rich sauce. — Amandip Uppal

Lamb Biryani Green Chicken Curry

Chutney Mary, St James's

A stone’s throw from The Ritz, Chutney Mary offers its well-heeled clients the perfect venue for a Gourmet Indian dining experience. Located in St James’s and complete with a resident doorman, diners can begin their evening sipping a chutney Bloody Mary with a side of perfectly placed poppadoms, sweet and spicy chutneys, and deliciously crispy kale in the Pukka Bar cocktail.

The main dining room, where Indian design meets old-school glamor, offers intricately presented dishes from every region. Small plates not to miss include the spicy corn ribs, slivers of corn on the cob marinated in exquisitely zesty Bombay street masala spices, tandoori artichokes, and the melt-in-your-mouth scallops in Mangalorean sauce. Main courses include the tandoori wild Madagascan prawns from the Indian barbeque menu or the slow-cooked tawa beef flank with bone marrow curry. And if you still have the space left, the srikhand eton mess will ensure the (very attentive) waiters will have to carry you out at the end of the night. — Jessica Rach

Veeraswamy, Regent Street

Once frequented by Mahatma Gandhi and Charlie Chaplin, the Michelin-starred Veeraswamy is the UK's oldest Indian restaurant. It was founded 91 years ago by a retired Indian Army officer and his princess wife, and the menu features royal favorites from several regions of India. In keeping with its Roaring Twenties history, the Maharajah-style interiors have a timeless sophistication—twinkly chandeliers and candlesticks, fretwork screens, and hand-woven carpets—as does the menu. Try the subtly sweet coconut and sour tamarind flavors of the Malabar lobster curry, or the intense lamb shanks slow-cooked in bone-marrow sauce. Other favorites include a rich chicken makhani in a caramelized onion and tomato Delhi sauce, and the signature prawn curry.

The Punjab, Covent Garden

This fourth-generation, family-owned restaurant in the heart of Covent Garden has its feet firmly on the ground. Specializing in no-nonsense northern Indian cuisine, the menu at Grandad's Kali Daal is comfortingly old-school with favorites such as a tarka dhal bursting with smoky garlic, fried onions, cumin, red chili, and ghee. The vegetarian mattar paneer is creamy and fresh, while the distinct Achari lamb and chicken dishes are perfectly pickled in traditional Punjabi spices. The chicken tikka is particularly delicious with a soft, coconut-stuffed peshwari naan. But Grandad's Kali Daal, a take on a classic black daal, is the stand-out dish. — Amandip Uppal

Motu Indian Kitchen

This is not just any takeaway, this is indulgent Indian from the crew behind Hoppers and Gymkhana. With shiny kitchens across London, Motu Indian Kitchen uses the same suppliers and spice mixes as the Michelin-starred Gymkhana. The name Motu comes from the affectionate Hindi term for “fat man,” and the menu includes feast boxes, as well as dishes like slow-cooked dal, chicken korma with rosewater and cashew, and a mixed platter of tandoor-grilled meats. Go for the mustard seed and curry leaf-laced prawn masala with a spicy potato-stuffed aloo kulcha naan. — Amandip Uppal

Kanishka indian restaurant

Kanishka by Atul Kochhar, Mayfair

In the heart of Mayfair, Kanishka 's opulent, contemporary interiors are synonymous with the food that follows. Perfectly presented plates packed with color and flavor capture the essence of the cuisine and culture across the seven sister states in the northeast of India.

The crab bonda is an exquisite example of fusion and balance. Sharp and spicy kimchi and chili-tamarind chutney cut through the sweetness of the crab fritter—the lasting impression is that these opposites complement each other. For those wishing to be a little less adventurous but still wanting to explore the coalescence of flavors, Atul’s Chicken Tikka Pie will hit the spot, even more so when paired with a lightly spiced cocktail. Many of those who have grown up in Indian households will know that we often measure success in the kitchen by two factors: how perfectly round your rotlis are and an emptied bowl of daal. If you try anything at Kanishka, make it the daal. Rich, creamy buttery, and simple—it's the star of the show. — Nitish Mandalia

Places to visit in London

Once in London, travel by public transport to cover the sightseeing hotspots. London is home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a number of fascinating tourist attractions. Here are just a few suggestions on the places to visit in London during your trip.

This is possibly the most widely recognized clock face in the world. The Big Ben is the nickname given to the bell in the Elizabeth Tower of Westminster, one of the most iconic sights associated with London. The clock is known to have survived even bombing during World War II, and has featured in numerous international as well as Bollywood movies. The Big Ben is currently undergoing renovations, and is scheduled to open to the public again sometime in 2020. A photo stop at the Big Ben is an essential part of any London sightseeing tour.

Buckingham Palace

The official London residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning British monarch, Buckingham Palace is one of the few remaining working royal palaces in the world. If you are planning to travel on your London holiday package between July and October, you may even have an opportunity to visit the Palace on one of the official tours. The Palace with its sumptuous State Rooms is one of the most spectacular places to see in London. It houses a magnificent display of art, Sevres porcelain, and one of the world’s largest collections of clocks. The Gardens of the Buckingham Palace are also worth a visit during your London sightseeing.

Coca Cola London Eye

Amongst the new London attractions, this riverside observation wheel on the Southbank of the River Thames is one of the most popular places to visit in London. A ride on the London Eye gives the visitor a panoramic view of various London tourist places along the river. The view is particularly spectacular around sunset when the light is golden. To avoid having to stand in a long queue, we recommend that visitors prebook this attraction and have it included in their London packages.

Tower of London

This oldest of London attractions is of special importance to the history buffs. This 900-year old building beside the River Thames has served variously as a royal palace, a prison, a treasury house and a place for executions. You can walk through perfectly preserved royal bedchambers, marvel at the Crown Jewels, and gaze at the spot where famous executions like those of Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More and Cromwell were carried out.

Windsor Castle

This 11 th century castle is the country estate of the British monarch and the largest and oldest occupied castle anywhere in the world. The best way to explore this historic place is to take the free guided tour of the Castle Precincts, which is led by a Warden and will give you insights into the history of the castle. Afterwards, use the multimedia guide included with your ticket to explore the Castle at your own place. An excursion to Windsor Castle is one of the best things to do in London on a free day. Ans. You will find several kinds of London tour packages with varying durations and rates. For instance, you can choose a 3 nights and 4 days trip to London at ₹ 78,156 per person, if you are intent on exploring only the UK capital. For example, you can book an 8 nights and 9 days package at ₹ 2,93,640 per person that covers London, Glasgow, Manchester and Lancaster. There are options available to suit every budget.

Ques. How many days are enough for London?

Ans. London tour packages have varying durations, depending on the attractions and activities that you wish to cover during your stay. Most experts recommend staying in London for a minimum of 4-5 days. This will give you sufficient time to take in the spectacular monuments and historical sites along with enjoying a bit of shopping and nightlife. London is a massive city and hence you will have to focus more on Central London, which contains most tourist attractions such as the London Eye, Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral and more. You’ll also find plenty of shopping, dining and nightlife destinations here. You shouldn’t miss out on the Thames River cruise, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park and the iconic British Museum too.

Ques. How much is the UK visa fee?

Ans. Worried about applicable visa charges while booking your London tour package? You need not be! There are several kinds of visas available with varying charges. The standard visitor visa applies for the UK, Jersey, Isle of Man and Guernsey, with a charge of USD 129. Visas for longer tenures up to two years can cost nearly USD 485.

Ques. Can I use my Indian SIM in London?

Ans. Whenever you’re planning to book a London tour package, make sure you know about the network and connectivity aspects. You can use your Indian SIM in London, subject to the following aspects: Your Indian SIM card should stay unlocked. Contact your Indian carrier for this purpose. The Indian SIM card should have compatibility with networks in the UK. Also verify this aspect with your service provider to know whether they already have an agreement with any network in the UK. Alternatively, you can buy a UK SIM card from any local provider, choosing from options like pre-paid, pay-as-you-go or post-paid, based on your usage needs. Follow the instructions given by the service provider in the UK to active your UK SIM card in your mobile phone. You will have to update the settings on your mobile phone in most cases.

Ques. Which are the best months to visit London?

Ans. While London is mostly regarded as a year-round destination for work and leisure, most people prefer booking London tour packages for the peak season between June and August. The weather stays delightfully warm at this time, while the city comes alive with multiple events alongside. The off-season is between the months of November and February which witness wet and chilly winters.

Ques. What to wear during a London trip?

Ans. While checking out London tour packages online, make sure to create a list of essentials including clothing for your trip. London is a relaxed and liberal city without any dress codes. However, you should carry clothing in accordance with the season. Irrespective of the time of year, you should always have comfortable walking shoes along with jeans, a jacket, rain jacket or raincoat, umbrella and some layers along with sunglasses. Layering up with comfortable tees/tops and light woollen is highly recommended on your trip.

This Is What It’s Like To Be Indian In London

Jetset Times

The Indian community is part of the colorful, multicultural society which cities such as London take great pride and celebration in.

When traveling it’s hard not to find yourself enraptured by the world we live in. Each of the world’s locales has a unique character; every country, city, or other landmark is like no other. That being said, none of them exist in a vacuum. And with each year that passes the world seems to grow smaller and smaller. People can go and live anywhere they want, provided they have the money to do so. As a result many find themselves in places radically different than where they were born. In a previous article I examined what it’s like to be African-American in Japan, however there are countless other examples of travelers, expats, and immigrants finding a new home in a country with a very different culture than theirs. Some immerse themselves in the culture of their new homes—while others bring their culture with them. And some, such as the UK’s Indian Diaspora, do both.

India’s modern history is closely tied to that of the United Kingdom. In the 19 th century the British Empire ruled over the entire subcontinent; it was not until 1947 that India gained its independence from the crown. In the seven decades since then the two countries have taken different paths, but they maintain very close relations. Many Indians have immigrated to the United Kingdom, and today British Indians are the country’s largest ethnic minority. They have had a tremendous effect on the culture of the United Kingdom, as well as the character of its major cities. London and Leicester in particular are home to large communities of South Asian people.

Mandavi Kaushik

Mandavi Kaushik is but one of many immigrants who enjoys life in the United Kingdom. “It’s just such a beautiful place,” she says. “There’s so much to see and do there. You could go shopping, visit a museum, or even just explore and take in the scenery.” She came to the United Kingdom fourteen years ago; nowadays she runs a popular fashion and lifestyle blog called The Red Notebook . Like many British Indians she resides in London, a city with a large population of immigrants from South Asia. Most of London’s Indian community resides on the western end of the city, with the district of Southall being known as “Little India.” As a very cosmopolitan and diverse place, London has many opportunities available for people coming to live and work there. It also acts as a gateway to Europe – though Mandavi notes that Brexit might complicate things.

Despite successfully integrating into British society, immigrants from India maintain much of their cultural identity. The children of immigrants also carry on their cultural legacy, and many – such as blogger Victoria Das – consider themselves more Indian than British. On her blog London Ki Ladki she closely follows South Asian fashion and culture, as well as the latest Bollywood movies. “My background heavily influences my side-line hustle in blogging,” she says. “The blog is my outlet to share my passion for South East Asian culture and share knowledge about what is going on in events, London dining, Bollywood and the UK’s fashion scene with others.” Victoria sees life is London as liberating, and notes that while both she and her friends’ parents tend to be more conservative, being raised in Britain has given her own generation a more liberal outlook on life.

Victoria Das

British Indians have had a profound influence on British culture as a whole. Both Mandavi and Victoria mention that Indian holidays have become big community events. Diwali –  the Festival of Lights –  is held every autumn in Trafalgar Square; the city’s mayor is always involved in the festivities. Holi and Eid are also widely celebrated. Indian food has also become very popular, with chicken tikka masala becoming one of the country’s most popular dishes. The exact origin of the recipe is unknown, but it was either created in India or developed in the United Kingdom by Bangladeshi and Indian-born chefs. Many popular British movies such as Bend it Like Beckham and Slumdog Millionaire were created by Indian directors, while movies and music from Bollywood are increasingly popular. “The Indian diaspora is making a huge mark in the creative/media scene,” Victoria observes. “For a creative like myself who works in marketing it’s exciting to see this shift.” But perhaps the single largest influence India has had on British culture is the United Kingdom’s love of tea. During the 18 th and 19 th centuries Indian tea made its way to Britain, becoming a major cultural touchstone in the process. Were it not for India, it’s very likely there would be no “tea-time.” While India has made quite a mark on the United Kingdom, their cultural exchange goes both ways: the game of cricket is huge in India, to the point that Mandavi jokingly compares it to a religion.

Despite all that Indian immigrants have achieved in the United Kingdom, Mandavi does note that there are still some undercurrents of racism and xenophobia. The situation has only worsened with the increase of racial tension that has spread across Europe, as well as the success of Brexit. “The mood is definitively different after Brexit,” she says. “There’s a lot of uncertainty among minorities here as to what comes next.” Mandavi describes it as a “closing down” of the country, preventing people outside the United Kingdom from being able to chip in. Despite everything she remains optimistic, hoping that everything will work out in the future.

No matter what happens, there’s one thing that remains obvious to me: the world will keep shrinking. People will keep traveling to and fro, experiencing new places as they do. If there’s one thing that stood out to me during my examination of travelers, expats, and immigrants in countries populated by different cultures or ethnicities it’s this: despite some racism and xenophobia, overall they are treated with respect. Despite the dark shadow the United Kingdom once cast over India, today Indian born immigrants, expats, and travelers are accepted. As Victoria says, “The Indian community is part of the colorful, multicultural society which cities such as London take great pride and celebration in.” To me, it’s a sign that although we still have much to do, we can take comfort in the fact that quite a lot of progress has been made. And while borders may close, we will always be united in the experiences we share with one another.

The Best Indian Restaurants in London

Dishes with a sense of place, regional specialities, and more

Share All sharing options for: The Best Indian Restaurants in London

London has a thrilling and rapidly evolving Indian restaurant scene — but many visitors play safe and only stick to the places they know: Dishoom, Veeraswamy, and Gymkhana — an exquisite venue that’s been left off this list simply because it’s so widely visited.

Most restaurants serve a generic menu of chaats, what can be loosely termed as ‘Punjabi’ food, South Indian dosas, and Indian-Chinese dishes because that’s what the majority of diners want and expect. However, the best way to enjoy an Indian restaurant is with a sense of adventure. Always make a point of finding out which region’s food it specialises in, where the chefs and owners are from, and what their signature dishes are. Give the familiar fare a miss and try something new — there’s much more to Indian food than curries.

These are London’s most exciting Indian restaurants right now, in which chicken tikka may be replaced with chingri macher, and samosas swapped with sabudana vada.

Note: It was important to get to grips with the exciting and constantly evolving Indian dining scene, to take its current temperature, and find answers to questions such as: are Southall and Wembley the best places to eat Indian; and why are Modern Indian venues opening at such a rapid rate? The formulation of this guide has taken over 18 months, with visits and re-visits to around 150 restaurants.

This final part is about the best of the best regional and Modern Indian chosen from all five instalments: food is essentially the starting point, but service, ambience and overall experience have also been taken into account.

Check out London’s best North Indian , Western Indian , Eastern Indian , Southern Indian , and Modern Indian restaurants, too.

This smart two-floor Southall venue is all clean lines and glossy surfaces. It’s been around for four decades — opened by the then 16- and 17-year-old siblings, Sanjeev and Sanjay Anand, whose grandfather Bishan Das Anand founded the well-regarded Brilliant Hotel in Nairobi. Madhu’s was their father Jagdish Kumar’s nickname; and in the early days, their mother Krishna Kumari was the head chef. Kenyan influences abound in dishes such as yoghurt-marinated baby poussin, and tender lamb ribs laminated with chilli and lemon. Fresh coriander-flecked pakoras in fennel-flavoured yoghurt kadhi, slender aubergines on a stem with baby potatoes, and butter chicken made to an old family recipe are among the most popular dishes. Cauliflower with fenugreek leaves is as good as what might be found in a Punjabi home kitchen; and dal makhani quietly trumps flashier versions found elsewhere. Don’t miss Punjabi samosas made with beautifully flaky ‘khasta’ pastry.

London’s Best North Indian Restaurants

Supperclub host and in-demand caterer Pritha Mukherjee, who once ran Kolkata Kitchen from her flat in north-west London, opened this hidden gem in Harrow almost a year ago. Named after the Bengali word for poppy seeds, it’s a smart place with beautifully folded white napkins and framed photos of Kolkata city scenes. There’s nuanced home-cooking to be found here: eggs cuddled under a thick duvet of white poppy seed paste; slow-cooked mutton kosha; raw green jackfruit with raisins and spices; and delicate rohu fish curry. Also not to be missed are toasted cashew-studded beetroot chops served with a zig-zag of aam kasundi made from raw green mangoes and mustard paste; Bengali aloo dum with pillowy discs of green pea kochuri; and cholar (chana) dal with coconut pieces, as sweet and as complex in its simplicity as the sentiments evoked by a Rabindranath Tagore tale.

Shree Krishna Vada Pav

This simple Maharashtrian vegetarian snack bar has expanded into a chain across west and north London — but the original in Hounslow is by far the best. Yes, the vada pav is very good, cushioned into lively red chilli, coconut, and garlic chutney-smeared, correctly trashy white bread rolls — but misal pav that’s the main draw. One of the most famous Maharashtrian dishes with countless regional variations, it’s rarely found elsewhere in London. Here, the sprouted bean stew comes in a vibrant red chilli rassa (gravy) fragrant with goda masala (black spice mix), topped with farsan (thick sev) and more of those bread rolls. Other classics include ‘coriander sticks’ or kothimbir vadi made from masses of fresh coriander and chickpea flour, sabudana vada (tapioca and potato patties), sabudana khichdi (similar, but in the form of a scramble), and poha (rice flakes with potatoes). To drink, there’s ‘cutting chai’ — Mumbai’s famous ‘half cup of tea’.

Asher's Africana Restaurant Wembley

This simple, neat vegetarian café in Wembley is owned by a Gujarati family from Africa — though there are few African influences on the cooking; the food being exactly like a grandma’s kitchen in Gujarat. The thalis — which is what everyone comes here for — include vegetable shaaks such as aubergine and spinach, or cauliflower with peas and potatoes; sweet-sour Gujarati dal or kadhi; assorted flatbreads, and rustic items like khichdi and bajri rotla (pearl millet flatbreads). Everything is demurely spiced and understated, nourishing and comforting. Every single dish is continually cooked from scratch by a team of older Gujarati women; and their warm and generous hospitality and delicious food attracts hordes of bachelors, students, and elderly people hankering after a taste of home. This is the sort of old-school fare that’s disappearing from the homes of Gujaratis, both in the U.K. and India.

Ex-Gymkhana chefs Nand Kishor and Sanjay Gour’s cosy, contemporary, colourful North Indian in Epsom is extraordinarily popular, and it’s easy to see why: the reassuringly short menu is filled with very well-executed dishes such as guinea fowl and chicken seekh kabab with apple murabba, and lamb chops enlivened by kasundi mustard relish. Streaked with green, spinach, potato, and onion pakoras don’t just look pretty, they’re freshly fried and not the hard, overcooked ‘double fried’ lumps found in inferior places. There’s more greenery in fragrant vegetable biryani, generously packed with asparagus, peas and Jerusalem artichokes — a combination that works surprisingly well, especially with the crunch of plentiful fried onions.

Most Londoners mispronounce the name of this popular London-origin mini-chain as ‘say-gaar’ — in fact, it’s ‘saa-gar’, which means ocean. It’s one of the few South Indian restaurants to showcase the simple vegetarian food of Udupi in Karnatka, centred on fresh vegetables, beans, and grains. The elegantly austere Hammersmith branch is the original and by far the best. Opt for the generous Udupi thali, which comes with various dals and lentil broths, and a regularly-changing selection of vegetables that may include crushed potatoes with a tempering of urad lentils and curry leaves, a side vegetable that might include shredded white cabbage with carrots, or ivy gourd or swede, and chayote cooked in a mellow yoghurt and coconut gravy fired up with green chillies. The flavours are gentle and nuanced, in keeping with the confidently understated look and mood of the place.

One of London’s best-known Indian chefs Rohit Ghai opened this impressive venue at the end of 2018, replacing was once another famous Modern Indian: Vineet Bhatia’s Rasoi (and later VBL). Alluding to themes of countryside, wildlife, and game hunting, Kutir means ‘a small cottage with thatched roof in the middle of a forest’ — a description somewhat at odds with the chintzy townhouse location in Chelsea, its elaborately printed wallpaper, heavy gilded mirrors, and artfully painted tiles. Any presuppositions are turned on their head when Gujarati dhokla arrive with apple slices and an entourage of salad leaves, a combination that works magnificently; and deep, dark venison cooked in mustard oil is paired with a decoratively scrunched-up paratha. Kashmiri lamb rogan josh, with an intriguing back note of stone flower spice, is served with Bihari-style mashed purple potato chokha; and jackfruit kofta startles with a tomato-onion sauce of a breathtaking depth of flavour.

The Best Modern Indian Restaurants in London

Understated in its elegance, this cosy two-room Modern Indian in Marylebone is owned by the same team as Brigadiers (and the temporarily closed Gymkhana): the renowned JKS restaurant group helmed by siblings Jyotin, Karam, and Sunaina Sethi. Here there are contemporary interpretations of coastal cuisines — including speciality dishes of the fishing communities — from India’s western coast that stretches from Maharashtra and Goa down to Karnataka and Kerala. This includes Karnataka-style aubergines and lemon rice laced with fresh coconut, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dried red chillies, raw green mangoes, tamarind, and chana dal (used as a spice). Despite not being connected to the famous fish restaurant of the same name in Mumbai, seafood is very much a speciality here — the highlight being seafood paniyaram: mini muffin-like rice and split urad lentil ‘pancake’ puffs, studded with prawns and scallops, offset by the mild sweetness of accompanying crab chutney.

The Cinnamon Club

Iqbal Wahhab launched this upscale Indian in 2001, but it wasn’t long before he parted company; and now it’s very much executive chef Vivek Singh’s baby. It’s located in a magnificent Grade II listed building of the former Westminster Library, a large space with two bars set over two floors. The book-lined dining room has a cinematic feel, with bright white walls, bright white tablecloths and bright lights. The former gentlemen’s club décor, beloved of the MPs who regularly dine here, has given way to lighter space that makes diners feel like they’re in a movie. ‘Bombay-style vegetables’ with truffled pao and jerusalem artichoke crisps is essentially pao bhaji with a culinary college education. The restaurant is famous for game and fish dishes, such as lobster with kokum dip and dried shrimp chutney; and tandoori venison loin with fenugreek and robust black stone flower reduction. The spicing is spirited, and the sheer variety of speciality ingredients and techniques is dazzling.

The Best Places to Eat in Westminster

Probably the best place to eat and drink in the City’s renowned Bloomberg Arcade, this smart sports bar is inspired by Indian army mess bars popular with military regiments — but also has the good looks, shiny surfaces, and sturdy furniture of classic British gentlemen’s clubs. Like other Indian pubs and bars, the emphasis is on kababs, chops, chaats, sandwiches, and barbecue dishes that are handy to pick up and eat while eyes are focused on the screen. Glazed puff pastries filled with gorgeously spiced guinea fowl come with fragrant green chutney for dipping; and a chaat of lotus root slices and puffed lotus seeds balances the tangy with the savoury. Mashed aubergines with toasted sweetcorn on miniature Rajasthani chickpea flour flatbreads have a deep smokiness that doesn’t overpower the spicing; and lamb kababs are juicy and properly charred on all sides. This is superlative snacking.

The Ultimate Brunch Restaurants in London

Udaya Kerala Restaurant

Located parallel to the main drag of the High Street in East Ham, this Kerala restaurant is superior to even the best South Indian restaurants in the area. It’s a neat, cosy place festooned with ornaments and paintings, including a striking nettipattam: a decorative shield used as an adornment for the trunks of elephants. Chicken 65 (with or without bone, a dish which originated in Chennai) and gobi 65, delicately spiced with cardamom and black pepper, are some of the tastiest versions found in London. Seafood is very much a strong point here, with lively spicing found in crab fry and squid curry. Fresh spices flown in from Kerala perk up a complex black chickpea curry, eaten with mashed cassava root that should be rolled into balls with fingers. Egg roast features whole, shallow-fried boiled eggs in a pool of thick gravy studded with dried red chillies, with crunchy cabbage thoran making an excellent foil. Don’t miss the lacy doilies of appams, spongy in the middle and crisp around the edges — better here than other restaurants in the area.

Hyderabadi Spice

One of the very few venues in London to showcase the exquisitely complex cuisine of Hyderabad, this small, modest-looking East Ham café attracts large family crowds, so be prepared to wait. There are many classics from the region, such as nizami gosht, kuska bagara, and haleem — but the one thing everyone comes here for is the generously portioned, excellent-value biryani. It more than lives up to expectations: cooked dum style, but served without the theatrics of a pastry lid, the golden grains of rice are generously studded with beautifully spiced lamb, chicken, seafood, whole boiled eggs, or vegetables, then topped with a tangle of crisp caramelised onions. This is also one of the few places to find khubani ka meetha, a classic pudding of stewed dried apricots and apricot kernels steeped (here very deeply) in cream; and ‘Irani chai’, a strong, slow-brewed Persian tea made with reduced milk solids ubiquitous in Hyderabad, but not widely available in London.

70 Days from India to London? This Ultimate Road Trip Snakes 12,000 Miles

Within a week of Adventures Overland announcing on its Instagram page that it was launching a bus service from the Indian capital New Delhi to London—a distance of 4,168 miles—the company was inundated with thousands of inquiries about it, despite the $20,185 fare.

"Our website has been visited over 150 million times and 25,000 people have already downloaded the brochure and registered their details since we announced the service," said Tushar Agarwal, co-founder of the company that offers self-drive expeditions and specializes in road trips. It's based in Gurugram, one of New Delhi's satellite cities.

Adventures Overland 2

Agarwal and his partner Sanjay Madan announced the bus service to London on August 15, India's 74th Independence Day. The duo hold a Guinness World Record for driving the longest distance in a single country (Australia) in 2013, and are familiar with the Delhi to London overland journey.

They conducted three previous road trips with self-driven car convoys on the same route, once in each of the last three years.

"In 2017, we undertook our first road trip to London , with a convoy of 13 cars and 27 people," says Agarwal who did his first solo London-to-Delhi trip in 2010. "It was a big success."

"At that time there were a lot of queries from people who wanted to do the trip but did not want to drive. That is when we started thinking about the bus service. But it took a pandemic and months of forced pause to make it a reality."

The bus service will be a first of sorts for Agrawal and Madan, who will be using a vehicle of their own to ferry the passengers, instead of simply facilitating the travel and escorting a convoy of cars owned by their clients.

Adventures Overland 3

"The bus is being customized to add all the necessities, comforts, and luxuries like high-speed wi-fi, powerful air-conditioning [and] beverages on board to make the journey comfortable," said Agarwal. "Every single route in each country has been vetted to ensure that the journey is seamless. We take charge of documentation, paperwork, visas, and permits to ensure that the entire focus of participants is on experiencing the journey."

The "hop-on-hop-off" Bus to London will have to take a circuitous route through 18 countries and travel approximately 12,427 miles over 70 days just to avoid going through Pakistan, with whom India has ongoing cross-border tensions.

The route will pass through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, and Belgium before reaching London.

Road to London

Cutting through Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, instead, would have shaved off 5,000 miles from the trip.

For Agarwal and Madan, however, a few extra miles are nothing when it comes to the safety that they believe this route offers. And they are hopeful that the recent skirmishes with China don't toss a spanner into the works.

"India has very strong trade relations with China and we are talking to each other to resolve the issue, so I don't think that the situation will escalate enough to affect the trip," said Agarwal. "If it does, we will comply with the government's directives."

Those who have taken similar trips with Adventure Overland vouch for the experience.

Pardeep Gupta, 67, an entrepreneur from Chandigarh in northern India took the Road to London drive with Adventure Overland in 2018.

Adventures Overland

"I decided to take my hardy Toyota Innova Crysta (a hatchback multi-purpose vehicle) because I reckoned that I would have no problems finding a repair garage if I had a snag," said Gupta. "Thankfully, such a situation didn't arise."

Gupta is a motorsports enthusiast who has taken part in car rallies like the Raid de Himalaya and Desert Storm multiple times.

"The trip was hassle-free other than a 10-hour wait in China where our documents were checked by seven agents," said Gupta. "All our visa formalities, permits, hotel stays, and local guides were arranged by Adventure Overland so all I had to do was drive and enjoy the experience."

For many, the Bus to London may seem like the last word in exotica, but for H Kishie Singh, columnist and author of the book "Good Motoring", the trip does not seem quite as exciting as the London-to-Delhi one he took in 1975.

"Travelling in a bus with 20 other Indians, which will in all likelihood include squalling babies and old people, does not sound like my idea of a good time," said Singh. "However, the old silk route that they intend to follow is spectacular and one should go on the trip just for the scenery if not the company."

Road to London 2

On Singh's Overland journey, he and a friend traveled over three months through countries along the route taken by Alexander, the ancient Macedonian general. They set out in Singh's blue Toyota Corolla sedan that was fondly named Bucephalus after Alexander's horse.

"After zig-zagging through Greece, we went to Turkey because I was determined to see the land of Rumi (poet) and the whirling dervishes," said Singh. "Then we drove through Iran. Those were the days when the Shah was still in power and the economy was booming. It was a modern, vibrant country."

The next leg of his journey led him through Afghanistan—to Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat—places steeped in history that he vividly remembers.

In Pakistan—India had just fought a war with its neighbor—Singh's passport was checked 32 times.

"But the people were very nice to me," he said.

22 things you need to know before visiting India

India is a feast for the senses and we've got everything you need to know before you visit © Andrii Lutsyk / Ascent Xmedia / Getty Images

India is a place that overwhelms your senses in the best possible way – nowhere else delivers quite the same barrage of sights, sounds and sensations as this continent-sized country at the heart of Asia.

It would take a lifetime to see all of India , let alone understand every nuance and facet of this nation of 1.4 billion inhabitants. But with a little preparation, you can learn to navigate the richness of this country, from its snow-capped peaks and velvety beaches to its historic temples and luxuriant palaces.

We've collated the top things you need to know about visiting India, but the journey begins before you leave home. Apply for your Indian visa online for a smooth arrival on the subcontinent. Read on for 22 more insider tips that will help make your vacation unforgettable.

1. Plan your trip around the seasons

India has a reputation for being hot and humid, but with beaches, mountains, hills, coastlines and plains all jammed into a relatively small geographical area, the climate is quite diverse. The southwest monsoon brings rainy weather to most of the country from June to September, but this is the best time of year to visit the high-altitude deserts of Ladakh , although depending on the route you take, you risk encountering landslides and floods.

In the far south, there’s also a milder rainy season from October to December. The ideal weather window for travel is from October to May, though temperatures and humidity climb to agonizing levels from March onwards in the run-up to the monsoon. If you find yourself in India in the spring, head to the Himalayan foothills for milder temperatures and good trekking conditions.

2. Get your jabs before you travel

There is no official requirement for vaccinations to enter India (although yellow fever vaccination is needed if you are traveling from a country where the disease is endemic).

That said, it is important that you contact a health professional at least eight weeks before you travel to ensure your jabs are up to date. Vaccinations for diphtheria and tetanus, hepatitis A and B, polio and typhoid are usually recommended, on top of childhood vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella.

Vaccinations worth considering for longer trips include Japanese B encephalitis, meningitis and rabies. Monkeys, dogs and cats can all carry the rabies parasite, and infection is fatal if untreated.

3. Take malaria precautions

Depending on where in India you are traveling to, you may want to speak to your healthcare provider about taking a course of anti-malarial tablets. For instance, northeastern and eastern parts of India, as well as the city of Mangalore, have a higher malaria risk.

Always take precautions to avoid mosquito bites – this will also help you avoid dengue fever, a viral infection that is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans. Sleeping under a mosquito net, wearing long sleeves and trousers in light colors, and using a repellent and/or a plug-in mosquito killer with a high concentration of DEET (diethyltoluamide) is advisable.

4. Get insured

Travel insurance is essential for India. Depending on where you travel to, you may find public hospitals are poorly equipped. Additionally, most private clinics and hospitals require payment ahead of treatment. Make sure you are covered for emergency evacuation and also for any adventure activities you plan to get involved in.

If you’re unlucky enough to be a victim of crime, contact the local police station or dial 100 or 112, the national emergency number. You’ll need to get the police to file a report (a “FIR" – First Information Report) to make a claim on your travel insurance.

5. Book ahead for busy times and festivals

India can get very busy from November to February, so affordable accommodation is usually swamped in peak season. It’s a good idea to book ahead, either directly with the venues or via booking aggregator sites such as Agoda and MakeMyTrip .

Also, book train tickets in advance where possible , particularly for popular routes. Tickets can be booked (with a fair amount of hassle) via the government booking site IRCTC or more easily through local booking sites such as 12Go or Cleartrip .

6. Plan your comms before you travel

Many things in India (including train bookings or ordering food online) get easier if you have a local SIM card. Bring an unlocked phone from home (or pick one up locally) and get a phone shop to sign you up for a local pay-as-you-go SIM package on arrival. You’ll need to bring passport photos and photocopies of your passport ID pages to complete the application.

7. Check your lunar calendars

While India officially follows the Gregorian calendar, the major festivals for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam and several other religions follow lunar calendars and fall on different dates from year to year. Always check festival dates before you book your trip (bearing in mind these dates are subject to change); the Indian government maintains a useful online list of public holidays .

8. Learn local etiquette

English is the  lingua franca in most metropolitan areas in India, and you’ll get away with polite hellos, goodbyes and thank yous in smaller towns too. However, if you’re traveling in northern India, you can say "namaste" (I bow to you) with your hands together in a prayer-like gesture in front of your chest. Similarly, when meeting Muslims in north India, you can say "salaam alaikum" (peace be with you) – the correct response is "alaikum salaam." Most of the time, it’s the effort that’s welcomed over pronunciation, so don’t be shy!

Shaking hands is a standard business greeting between men, but outside metropolitan regions, men and women rarely shake. Only ever use your right hand. The same rule applies when passing things to people – including money.

If you get invited to someone’s home, bring a small gift (flowers or sweets are always a safe bet) and remove your shoes before entering. It’s polite to eat and drink what you are offered, even if you don’t really fancy it.

9. Dress modestly

Depending on where in India you are, modesty is taken seriously – especially for women. Travelers of any gender will have an easier time if they wear loose-fitting clothing that covers their legs and arms. Swimwear is only appropriate for the beach – although it is not uncommon to see locals swim fully clothed. To fit in, consider investing in a kurta pyjama (a traditional garment resembling a long shirt and loose trousers for men) or a salwar kameez (a long shirt, loose trousers and scarf for women).

10. What to eat and how to eat it

Many religions in India have their own dietary rules. Muslims avoid pork, many Hindus avoid beef, and some Hindus and Buddhists are vegetarian or vegan. Many Jains are vegetarians who avoid some vegetables (most notably onions, garlic and potatoes) and who try to avoid causing harm to all living creatures. These rules mean vegan and vegetarian food is often easy to find in India.

Eating with your hands is the norm in many restaurants, particularly in parts of southern India. Take your cue from other patrons in the restaurant, and remember to eat with your right hand. Mix rice and curry into balls with your fingers and push it into your mouth with your thumb. Some thalis (plate meals consisting of multiple dishes served in tandem) are served not on a plate but on a washed and flash-heated banana leaf.

11. Haggling is not a game of life and death

Haggling for a fair price when buying things – in street stalls and open-air markets – is a way of life in India. Although it can sometimes be a frustrating experience, losing your temper is extremely bad form – if you can’t agree on a price with the vendor that you are both happy with, politely decline and shop somewhere else.

The rules of the game are as follows. The vendor will quote you a price that is more than the item is worth, then you’ll come back with a counter-offer, working up from there until you reach a mutually agreeable figure.

The “walking away” trick may bring a few last-minute adjustments, but before long, you’ll reach a threshold that the vendor won’t go below. Throwing in extra items may bring a discount on the overall cost. Many travelers prefer not to haggle in places where the money goes directly to artisans.

12. Respect etiquette at religious sites

Religion is taken very seriously in India, so it pays to know the rules and expectations for visits to temples, mosques, monasteries, gurdwaras (Sikh shrines), synagogues and churches. Always check if you are allowed to enter – some temples and mosques are closed to people who don’t follow the faith. Mosques may also be closed to visitors during prayers or on Fridays.

If asked to do so, remove your shoes before entering any religious building, and be prepared to cover your head with a scarf or shawl. Generally, always cover your legs and arms (a sarong can be handy as an emergency cover-all). Some temples also ban leather goods, and many religious sites do not allow photography.

Avoid pointing the soles of your feet towards a person or deity – this is considered disrespectful. The same goes for touching any person or effigy on the head. It is conventional to walk around Buddhist and Hindu shrines in a clockwise direction, in a ceremonial circuit known as a parikrama .

Making an offering or leaving a donation is often expected – locals always offer something, but be wary of people waving receipts showing huge donations. Giving something is appropriate, but don’t feel pressured into leaving large sums.

13. Giving alms is common but up to you

The giving of alms has a long history in India, and foreigners can expect to be approached regularly with requests for money. Whether you give or not is a personal choice, but many Indians give on a daily basis, particularly when visiting temples and mosques. Be aware that some requests for money will be scams, and you may be able to do more good by giving your time or cash to charity or aid organizations you’ve taken time to research, rather than handing out cash.

14. Respect local social attitudes

India has complex social rules about respect for elders. Depending on where you are traveling to, older people are often greeted with the honorific “auntie” or “uncle,” and the ending ji may also be added to someone’s name as a sign of respect.

Outside bigger cities, India can be quite conservative when it comes to interactions between unmarried men and women. Also, most parts of India are conservative when it comes to same-sex relationships. Whatever your sexuality, it’s best to avoid public displays of affection.

15. Street harassment is unfortunately common

Although harassment can happen anywhere, parts of India are constantly in the news owing to a lack of women’s safety. Beyond long, unwelcome stares and persistent attempts to start a conversation, more serious assaults are also a risk. Groping is common in crowds (particularly during festivals).

Exercise caution like you would anywhere else, and remain alert. Never get into a taxi or auto rickshaw containing anyone other than the driver, and avoid walking alone in quiet areas, particularly at night. Decline offers of food or drinks from strangers.

If traveling by public transport as a woman, it's best to seek out train carriages and designated seating reserved for women. Wearing a wedding ring (even if not married) and using dark sunglasses and headphones can buy you some privacy on public transport. If you are being hassled, drawing loud attention to the intrusion may encourage others to come to your aid.

16. Keep track of security situations in India

India has seen deadly attacks by separatist and Marxist groups and Kashmiri insurgents. Monitor the local news and be alert for suspicious behavior, particularly around major tourist sites. Always check the security situation before traveling to Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley in case of flare-ups of unrest. Strikes, demonstrations and protests are also best avoided, as violence is a risk. It goes without saying but in the event of trouble, obey local curfews and stay inside – your hotel is probably the safest place to be.

A man sits on the side of a red rock mountain in the Indian Himalayas

17. Take the altitude seriously when hiking

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a risk when traveling above 2500m (8202ft), which covers most of the Indian Himalayas . AMS can be fatal, so always ascend slowly and take rest days to allow your body to acclimate to significant elevation changes. If you begin to feel ill while hiking in the mountains, stop, and if your symptoms don’t improve, descend immediately.

18. Familiarize yourself with local rules and regulations

India has a few laws and regulations that visitors might be unfamiliar with. For instance, taking photographs of bridges, the periphery of military camps and border crossings – or flying drones over them – is considered a serious security issue.

When traveling by plane internally in India, you may be asked to surrender batteries from devices in your cabin bags. Smoking is banned in most public places, and a few states also have bans on the consumption of beef – killing or injuring a cow in a road accident, even accidentally, can lead to violent reprisals.

To avoid sticky situations, take the time to research where you’re going, and talk to staff at your hotel or hostel or your B&B host for advice on things to be aware of.

19. Steer clear of drugs

India may have a reputation amongst travelers as a place to push boundaries, but its drug laws are strict. Possessing even small amounts of drugs for personal use can lead to a prison sentence.

Some religious groups are permitted to consume marijuana for ceremonial purposes, but that often doesn’t extend to tourists. You can, however, find bhaang – a marijuana mixture made with the leaves (rather than the bud) of the cannabis plant – at government-approved bhaang shops.

20. Avoid the tap water

The tap water in India is not potable. Drinking or brushing your teeth with it can be a fast track to stomach troubles – the most common illness tourists experience in India. Stick to purified or bottled water (or even better, purify your own to avoid contributing to India’s plastic waste mountain).

The water rule extends to ice (be wary of ice in drinks and ice cream) and to uncooked foods, particularly salads and dishes such as coriander chutneys, which may have been washed with contaminated water. When eating fruit, stick to things you can peel or wash thoroughly yourself, and be cautious of freshly prepared juices. Hot drinks are generally fine, so drink your fill of chai (milky tea, often spiced and sweet).

21. Watch local news to keep track of natural disasters

Some geographical areas in India are prone to natural disasters, and the risk is higher in certain seasons. Hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, for instance, often see flash flooding and landslides during the monsoon. Be alert to signs of natural disasters and keep an eye on the local news so you know which areas to avoid. Follow the Indian Meteorological Department’s website as well as their social media handle for timely updates.

If you are caught up in a natural disaster, follow the advice of emergency workers and try to leave the area quickly.

22. Spot the scams

India has a reputation for scams designed to separate tourists from their money, and touts and confidence tricksters can often be found where tourists gather. Get tourist information and make bookings at official offices, rather than “tourist offices” you have been led to by people offering unsolicited help.

If anyone steers you to a hotel, shop or other establishment without you asking, they may be angling for a commission, which will be added to the price you pay. Be dubious of claims that the place you want to go is “closed” – always check yourself to be sure.

Exercise common sense and be wary of deals that sound too good to be true – for example, the gem scam, where travelers are tricked into buying worthless gems to “sell at a profit back home.”

Want to travel to India without leaving London? I went on the perfect walking tour for you

Rushing through London, it’s easy to take the capital’s great variety for granted.

But even if I wasn’t on a walking tour that’s just paused, Shri Sanatan Mandir Hindu temple on Ealing Road would have stopped me in my tracks.

It glows with self-possession in the November sunlight; 9,700 square metres of Gujarati carved limestone. While we’re gazing up at the temple, our guide Vaishali Patel is watching us with delight.

“I love seeing everyone’s eyes light up when they see the temple,” she tells me afterwards. “And the look of their faces eating paan.” (We’ll get to that).

Vaishali designed her ‘Immersive Indian Community Tour of North London’ following training from Women in Travel, a UK-based social enterprise that connects women from diverse, underserved communities with fulfilling jobs in tourism. Another graduate of their tour guiding academy is sharing the Ethiopian flavours of Shepherds Bush, on tours available through Intrepid Travel.

For other Londoners, these tours offer an authentic way to appreciate the multiculturalism of home. And a sustainable way to get a taste of another country without the cost and air miles.

What does the Indian tour of London involve?

Ealing Road is a well-known commercial street among London’s Indian population, and the obvious choice for an immersive tour.

“This street has it all. It’s very sensory, you can smell incense sticks, the food, see the colours of the clothes, the fake gold,” says Vaishali, who grew up in neighbouring Harrow. Her parents are from the west Indian state of Gujarat , and as a child would take her to Ealing Road to shop for vegetables. “Everything here is catered for the Indian Gujarati lifestyle,” she says.

London is huge, and it takes me around an hour to arrive at Alperton on the Piccadilly Line from my area of North London. It beats the roughly 8 hours it would take to fly to Ahmedabad, while still giving a sense of journeying. And, after meeting Vaishali and our small group, the Hindu temple is the perfect place to start.

“I invite you to take part in a meditative journey,” she says before we step inside, activating an attention to detail that makes the rest of the morning so rewarding.

Walking silently around the paths inside the temple - with its 41 statues of deities also carved in Gujarat - I’m struck by how old and grounded it feels for a building completed in 2010. Perhaps some of that weightiness comes from its significance to the community; Vaishali says she is more spiritual than religious, but the temple makes her feel rooted.

She weaves personal experiences and family anecdotes into her cultural narration. Like her mum’s older aunts, who decades ago decided to don the traditional white saris of widows in order to travel India and its temples with greater independence.

What Indian foods can you eat on Ealing Road?

Our next stop is definitely the one that has lingered most with me taste-wise: a paan shop.

This snack, or mouth sweetener, is made using a colourful assortment of ingredients: desiccated coconut, nutmeg, coriander, candied fruit, fennel seeds (giving it a medicinal flavour) and more, all wrapped in a betel leaf. Some varieties include tobacco, and are chewed and spat out - as faint pink marks on the pavement show, despite the shop sign prohibiting this.

Sweet-toothed travellers will be thrilled by a stop at a traditional sweet shop too. My favourite was barfi - a dense hit of sugar and condensed milk - westernised with a layer of chocolate.

A trip to a sari shop is a different kind of treat for the eyes, and a chance to hear more about the life and times of Ealing Road from a lovely, family-run business, who arrived in London in the 1970s from India via Nairobi.

A couple of stops later, and you’ll have rebuilt your appetite for a restaurant lunch of delicious Gujarati street food and mango lassis.

A walking tour from a walking tour lover

This immersive experience is made by Vaishali - it simply wouldn’t be the same without her. She’s not only part of the community, but a natural storyteller and travel lover, who says she always takes walking tours when abroad to get off the beaten track.

Amid a 20 year-long career in marketing, a desire to spread her wings has taken her on solo travel adventures all over the world, from Brazil to New Zealand. She loves how expansive it feels, meeting people and gaining self-knowledge; “people reflect back to you parts of you that you didn’t see yourself,” she says.

Vaishali’s passion for solo travel and desire to embolden other women has just led to her publishing a book, ‘Solo Explorers’, born of conversations with 30 other female travellers.

“I had no idea how much other cultures will be interested in something we take for granted,” she says of Ealing Road. “But there’s actually wow moments for other cultures.”

“This is very real. It’s not staged; you’re stepping into the daily lives of shop owners, businesses and people.” The tours take place on Saturday mornings because it gets too busy in the afternoons.

They cost £65 (€76) per person, and can be booked through Women in Travel’s website shop.

A percentage of the proceeds from each tour goes back into supporting the social enterprise’s mission to provide women - many of whom are refugees or survivors of domestic abuse, human trafficking or homelessness - with the opportunity to fulfil their economic and individual potential through employability and entrepreneurship.
