Chatting With Hardwell About His Long Awaited REBELS NEVER DIE Album, Tour, New Sound, And More

Dance music pioneer and former 2 x World No.1 DJ  Hardwell  returned this year to make history with undoubtedly the most anticipated return of 2022. Revealing a new sound, alongside announcing a 24-date world tour supporting his new artist album,  Rebels Never Die ,  Hardwell  used his headline slot at Ultra earlier this year to mark a new era in his career. This momentous occasion during Ultra not only served as Hardwell’s first show back but a chance for him to ignite the attention of fans worldwide. Since then, the legend has traveled and continues to travel the world to spread the new madness. Hardwell’s new 14-track solo album, released on his label Revealed Recordings, represents a critical point in the musical shift for one of electronic music’s biggest-known stars.

On this occasion, we had a chat with the one and only Hardwell to learn more about this incredible moment in his career and more.

Hardwell, so cool to have you here with us today! How is everything in your life going right now?

Thanks for having me and for the support with everything so far. Life feels good right now. I’m super happy with where I am at with my music and the balance I have in my life at this moment in time, just feels good. So yeah, I’m very happy.

You just dropped your so long-awaited album, REBELS NEVER DIE, how does it feel?

So yeah, my 2 nd studio album REBELS NEVER DIE is officially out. It’s only been a few years, but it’s also been hectic of a journey to this point. Making that decision to step back from touring and focus on myself was a bold moment in my life, but it’s also important to me that I continue to push myself. This album is a big reflection of that decision because it’s me taking a new step forward, making a statement. So now the whole album is here and fans can experience it in full makes me really happy.

Must say that it is incredible, tell us, how did you find this new sound of yours?

Thank you, that means a lot to me to hear that. So, a while after my announcement of taking some time off I just started listening to lots of music, and especially stuff from my early teenager years. I started to reconnect with all this music that got me into dance music in the first place. From here I got inspired to strip all the layers back and go back to being me. That’s where the sound for REBELS NEVER DIE came from.

This year you traveled and continue to travel the world showing off this new Hardwell to the world! How is that going?

The tour has been going great! So far we’ve taken the REBELS NEVER DIE stage to shows at Ultra Europe, Untold, Ushuaia Ibiza, and Tomorrowland. The support from the fans along this journey has been magical and every show so far has felt like a dream of emotions, I’ve loved it. Being away all that time was hard because I love DJing, I love that connection with the fans, it’s an impossible experience to truly summarize in words, but it feels so good to be back.

hardwell rebels never die tour dates

All your fans, including us, waited so much for your return! How did the crowds react when they got to see you live again?

I must thank all the fans, including yourself, for the warmth and support behind me and this new direction. Its nerve-wracking coming back with a new sound and stage show, because I see it from the fans perspective, they want to hear the well-known songs, but I have to say the fans have been nothing but amazing. We’ve grown together as a community and to be able to share these magical moments on the dancefloor is an incredible feeling.

How would you describe the 2022 summer for yourself in four words?

Ahh, this is difficult to answer because this summer has been such a rollercoaster of emotions for me. Not only because of coming back after these past few years. Reinventing myself as an artist and getting a chance to test the waters with all this new music, playing big festivals and shows like Ushuaia Ibiza again, and reconnecting with the fans after all this time. Especially after all the lockdowns. So, to give it to you in a short form, “Happy To Be Back”.

What does a day in the studio look like for you? Making such iconic music takes a lot of inspiration I’d imagine, and was wondering how you do it!

I spend a lot of time in the studio, even after my sabbatical from touring I spent a lot of my time in the studio working on new music. My studio is in my house so I’m able to wake up, prepare myself for the day, and then get to work for will often be an extended session working on ideas or finishing up a track. I love it in my studio space, I feel happy there. But my approach varies so it’s not just the same process each day. I think this is a healthy way to go about studio work. I’m inspired by a lot of things in life and will use my experiences of touring, and memories of life as a way to be creative with what’s at the core of my music.

Where do you see the EDM scene going in the future? As it feels like it’s changing rapidly isn’t it?

Compared to our legacy genres like hip hop, rock, and pop, we’re still super young as a scene. Yet collectively as a scene, we have come so far. We’re seeing a real explosion of local scenes having a global presence and I think this is only going to make electronic dance music more interesting in the coming years.

Any message for all your fans?

I love you. Thank you and see you on the dancefloor very soon!

In Autumn 2018, after more than a decade of playing the biggest festivals on the planet, Hardwell announced he would be taking a sabbatical from touring. So his emphatic return on Sunday night, his first official show since his concert with the Metropole Orkest Symphony at the Ziggo Dome back in October 2018, was unsurprisingly a moment for the history books. Playing a surprise set on the main stage, closing out the festival’s weekend, the 150,000 capacity crowd excitedly greeted Hardwell’s return. Whilst online, his performance also broke Ultra’s numbers via the live stream, with fans tuning in from around the globe, all eager to watch Hardwell’s first official live set in some 3.5 years.

Hardwell, Ultra Music Festival

Hardwel l rocked the mainstage crowd at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami on Sunday (March 27) with a huge, pummeling and thoroughly dark new sound that featured a sleek space theme and sampled Metallica and Linkin Park.  It was a comeback performance that marked the Dutch producer’s first show after a four-year hiatus. Now, the producer born Robbert van de Corput is ready to take this new iteration of Hardwell on the road.

See latest videos, charts and news

On Monday (March 28), Hardwell announced a global tour that will run through festivals, clubs and arenas in the U.S., Europe and beyond for the rest of 2022. The first show of Hardwell’s boldly titled Rebels Never Die Tour will happen in late May in Jerusalem, Israel, with shows to follow at Ultra Europe, the first and third weekends of Tomorrowland, Romania’s Untold Festival and Ibiza mega-club Ushuaïa.

How Charli XCX's 'Against the Grain' Aesthetics Confound, Inspire & Create Copycats

The producer will return Stateside on Sept. 17 for a show at New York’s UBS Arena at Belmont Park, which holds roughly 18,500 attendees. The only other U.S. stop on the tour happens at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on Sept. 25. The tour will then roll to Asia for five shows this December.

Trending on Billboard

Hardwell was a major star of the EDM era, but in September of 2018 announced that he was deciding to “clear [his] schedule indefinitely” because the pressures of heavy touring had come to feel like “a never-ending rollercoaster ride.” His set Sunday night is not the first time an EDM star has used the Ultra mainstage to mount a comeback, with Swedish House Mafia’s 2018 reunion show serving as the launchpad for their extended comeback.

Songs on which Hardwell is credited as the lead artist have drawn 240.3 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data. He has four top 10s on  Billboard ’s Top Dance /Electronic albums chart and six entries on  Billboard ’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, with “Dare You” featuring  Matthew Koma  peaking at No. 16 in 2014.

See his complete tour schedule below. Tickets go on sale Tuesday (March 29) at 12 p.m. ET.

Hardwell Dives Into ‘REBELS NEVER DIE’ and the State of the Scene

Hannah Roberts

Hardwell played a jaw-dropping set to a sold-out crowd in San Francisco, and we caught up with the iconic artist before he took the stage.

After seeing Hardwell return to the spotlight this year at Ultra Music Festival after an almost four-year-long hiatus, any assumptions fans had were completely blown out of the water. Dropping a set stocked full of only new music, the world basked in the tunes he had worked on over the past few years. Hardwell is back, and he’s making a statement with his all-new sound, inspired by the music that he himself wants to hear on the dancefloor.

With his comeback performance and subsequent release of the REBELS NEVER DIE album, a world tour was also announced, and I knew I had to catch him at the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco; being the only U.S. tour stop on the West Coast, I prepared for a road trip that could not come soon enough. Hardwell proved the drive from San Diego worthwhile. You could feel the energy in the room pulsating when the lights went down, and the clock started ticking as “ BROKEN MIRROR ” opened up the show, followed up with “ INTO THE UNKNOWN .”

Hardwell did a phenomenal job of keeping the intensity high for the entirety of his two-and-a-half-hour set, playing releases like “ LASER ,” “ SELF DESTRUCT ,” “ PACMAN ,” “ GODD ,” “ REMINISCE ,” and “ DOPAMINE .” Catchy mashups were also sprinkled throughout his set as a surprise, like mixing “ REBELS NEVER DIE ” with Kx5’s “ Escape ” and “ I FEEL LIKE DANCING ” with David Guetta and Kid Cudi’s “ Memories .” Stirring up fond memories in fans’ hearts, Hardwell also performed a mashup of Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke, and Deborah Cox’s “ Leave The World Behind ” with “ Spaceman ” for a truly unbelievable moment.

The venue was the perfect location for his entrancing stage design, and the sound was bumping at solid levels throughout the night. It really was a nonstop party, with Hardwell hopping on the mic a few times throughout the night to hype up his die-hard fans and newcomers alike. Fans from all points of his career were surely satisfied during this show, with Hardwell performing a perfect mix of nostalgic big room beats and releases in his current, amplified REBELS NEVER DIE style. If you have the chance to see him at one of the remaining tour stops, do not miss that opportunity.

Prior to taking the stage in SF, we had the chance to chat with Hardwell and jumped at the opportunity. Listen to REBELS NEVER DIE on Spotify and read on for his thoughts on the scene today, tour life, his music production, and more!

Stream Hardwell – REBELS NEVER DIE on Spotify:

Thank you again for chatting with us today; it really does mean a lot! You’ve surely been on a whirlwind this year, from debuting the REBELS NEVER DIE album at Ultra Miami to embarking on your world tour shortly after. How has this return to this fast-paced tour life been overall? Are there any surprises that you’ve learned along the way this time?

I’m really happy to be back. I couldn’t wish for a better comeback than Ultra Miami, playing out new music, and currently, we’re doing the whole world tour. It’s going really well so far, almost every show is sold out. I think I learned a lot from my previous world tour. I’m not doing that many shows anymore as I did before just to make sure I’m not going to get burned out. I enjoy every single show, and I’m really happy to be back on stage with a new sound and everything. It’s going really well.

So great to hear! You stepped back from touring in 2018, and a lot has surely changed in the industry since then. What are some of the biggest changes and trends you’ve witnessed in the scene since returning to the spotlight?

Well, obviously, the whole COVID situation, in the beginning, was really bad for the scene. A lot of promoters lost a lot of money and a lot of cancellations for the shows. I think in the end, if you look back at the scene, a lot of things have changed for the better. A lot of people that were in this business with the wrong mentality, or just in this scene for making money and not caring about music, they all stopped. The scene’s purer now, more organic, which is a good thing.

When it comes to trends, I really feel that people are more open-minded. You can tell that some DJs are playing different styles than before, even including myself, and I think that’s a good thing. I think everybody was kind of stuck in the same big-room festival sound on the main stage, and now you can tell there’s much more appreciation for the underground, much more appreciation for the main stage. I think that’s the perfect blend. As long as the underground is popular, it pushes up the mainstage DJs and the other way around, so that balance is completely returned now.

Exactly. I was right there for your Ultra Miami comeback front and center, and it just blew my mind completely. What was going through your mind when stepping on that stage?

A lot. [Laughs] I was dead tired after the show. A lot of emotions, and I didn’t know what to expect. I knew that I was going to play only new music that people never heard before, so that really made me nervous. On the other hand, I trusted my gut feeling that I really wanted to do this and bring it this way. We worked so hard on this show, including the team, and I was just really proud of the moment to step back on stage. It was a surprise act, but when I saw all the Hardwell signs, I was like, “this is amazing.” [Laughs]

Hardwell at Ultra Music Festival 2022

REBELS NEVER DIE is a 180 from the music you were putting out in 2018. It’s aggressive, refreshing, fun, and exciting. Definitely what the scene needs right now. Was there anything or anyone in particular that you looked to when creating this new sound?

The inspiration I used for this album dates back to early trance. I used a lot of inspiration from guys like Ferry Corsten , Marco V , the early days of Tiesto , Armin van Buuren , and some new techno tracks that I really like. Even my oldest sound before I broke through, especially during those days when I was playing a lot of shows in Holland in 2007-2008, I already played more underground techno that kind of evolved into a more mainstage sound, which later on became big-room. I thought it was time to blend every Hardwell aspect that I’ve been through so far into one new genre. It’s basically what I’m playing right now, and that’s what the REBELS NEVER DIE album stands for.

You’ve recently said that you hate to be caught up in one particular genre, and you’re always trying to make new music that you want to play out. Are there any other sounds or styles that you’d like to experiment with as Hardwell or anything you’re working on now?

I’m always experimenting. I’m making a lot of different music besides my own; let’s call it EDM. I will always do that, not particularly as a Hardwell single, but just for me as a person. I like to be in the studio working on music. It can be a J Balvin kind of track, or it can be like a hardstyle track. I always like to experiment with different styles.

Hardwell in Ibiza 2022

You’ve also expressed that “MIND CONTROL” is your favorite song off REBELS NEVER DIE , with its melodic build-up. Are there any other tracks on the album that were a real challenge to produce or went through many versions before we heard the final product?

The track that stood out where I couldn’t finish it the way I wanted was “F*CKING SOCIETY.” It took me three years to finish the song. Even with such a simple hook melody, I couldn’t find the right chords in the break. The final version that’s on the album was version 72, no joke. It took me so long to nail the sound the way I wanted it to. I’m really happy, though. I’m happy with how it sounds, and it really works well live.

It really does. So, you’re set to play upcoming shows in cities across the world, from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Dubai, to name a few. What can fans expect from the remainder of your REBELS NEVER DIE tour stops?

The REBELS NEVER DIE show obviously incorporates all the music from the album. But in the meanwhile, since Ultra and now, I’ve produced a lot of new tracks and been working on new collaborations. We’re going to play a lot of new music as well, and you have the show itself. It’s a crazy show. It’s one big visual experience. We have a custom stage, and it looks amazing. It looks like a diamond. When you see the show tonight, I think you will love it.

I can’t wait; I’ve been waiting for months! [Hardwell Laughs] Last question. What is one piece of advice that you would give yourself when you were just starting out in your career?

Always follow your gut feelings and your heart, and don’t be distracted by what other people think or their opinions. Just follow your heart, and believe in believing in yourself. Just keep believing in yourself. It doesn’t matter if you’re a DJ, or in a different job, or in life itself. Just always believe in yourself, and just listen to your gut feelings – that is the most important thing.

Great advice for sure. Well, that’s all I have for you. Thank you!

HARDWELL RETURNS TO PORTUGAL WITH ‘REBELS NEVER DIE’ ALBUM WORLD TOUR

Hardwell  is now confirmed to play in Portugal, on November 23rd, at Altice Arena, in Lisbon, as part of his apotheotic solo return to worldwide stages in the  Rebels Never Die  tour.

Nearly ten years on from when he performed one of the most electrifying performances at perhaps one of the most influential electronic music events in history. Dance music pioneer and former 2 x World No.1 DJ  Hardwell  returned to the stage at  Ultra Music Festival  in March to make history with undoubtedly the most anticipated return show of 2022.

In Autumn 2018, after over a decade of playing the most significant festivals on the planet,  Hardwell  announced he would take a sabbatical from touring. So his emphatic return during Ultra Music Festival 2022, his first official show since his concert with the  Metropole Orkest Symphony  at the  Ziggo Dome  back in October 2018, was unsurprisingly a moment for the history books. Playing a surprise set on the main stage, closing out the festival's weekend, the 150,000-capacity crowd excitedly greeted  Hardwell's  return. Whilst online, his performance also broke Ultra's numbers via the live stream, with fans from around the globe eager to watch Hardwell's first official live set in some 3.5 years.

Revealing a new show and new sound,  Hardwell  used the initial performance of the  Rebels Never Die  tour to mark a new era in his career. His new 14-track solo album, released on his label  Revealed Recordings , represents a critical point in the musical shift for one of electronic music's biggest known stars.

The brand new  Rebels Never Die  world tour is a large-scale production concept that will give fans a unique multi-dimensional experience to witness Hardwell perform live back on stage. Throughout 2022, the  Rebels Never Die  album tour will see Hardwell on the road with already 25 dates booked on the biggest stages across  Europe, Asia, North  and  South America.

On  November 23rd , it will be  Hardwell's  Portuguese fans' turn to reconnect with one of the most iconic artists in the electronic music scene. With a powerful new show, Hardwell returns to the  Altice Arena  with one of the largest and most impressive dance music productions in the world right now.
