Where to buy Tom Cruise's iconic aviator sunglasses from Top Gun: Maverick

By Allie Johnson

What sunglasses does Tom Cruise wear in Top Gun: Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick," Tom Cruise's fighter pilot character wears Ray-Ban Aviator Classics (model 3025), also known as the Ray-Ban original. He wears gold frames with green lenses, an iconic color combination that has become known as "Top Gun sunglasses."

History of Top Gun and Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban Aviators were created in the 1930s as pilot sunglasses to help shield aviators' eyes from the glare of the sun above the clouds. Over the years, Ray-Ban Aviators became an American icon, often spotted on celebrities from Audrey Hepburn and James Dean to Michael Jackson and Madonna.

So Ray-Ban Aviators were a natural fit for a movie about fighter pilots. In the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun," Tom Cruise wore the same style of aviators that he wears in the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick." Thanks to the popularity of the original "Top Gun" movie, both sunglasses sales and interest in military aviation took off.

The movie "Top Gun" is based on the U.S. Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, also known as TOPGUN, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The school opened in California in 1969 to better train fighter pilots for combat in the Vietnam War. It became famous thanks to "Top Gun," and Ray-Ban Aviators also got their moment in the sun.

Tom Cruise, “Top Gun” and Ray-Ban

Before starring in "Top Gun," Tom Cruise already had ties with Ray-Ban. He wore a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in "Risky Business," the racy teen comedy that came out three years earlier in 1983.

In "Top Gun," Ray-Ban Aviators played a key part in Tom Cruise's style. His look was cool, tough and edgy. In addition to Cruise's Maverick, these other "Top Gun" characters also wore Ray-Ban Aviators:

"Top Gun sunglasses" — Ray-Ban Aviators with gold frames and green lenses.

Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer ( Ray-Ban Shooter 3138 )

Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards ( Ray-Ban Caravan 3136 )

Marcus "Sundown" Williams, played by Clarence Gilyard (Ray-Ban Aviator 3513)

Ron "Slider" Kerner, played by Rick Rossovich ( Ray-Ban Aviator 3025 )

Air Boss Johnson, played by Duke Stroud (Ray-Ban Outdoorsman 3030)

The original "Top Gun" movie sent sales of Ray-Ban Aviators soaring. The brand reportedly saw sales skyrocket by 40% after the movie’s release — higher than an F-14 fighter jet with Maverick in the cockpit.

Who is Tom Cruise's Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original 1986 movie "Top Gun," iconic American actor Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. So, who is Maverick? He's a fictional lieutenant and fighter pilot at the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school for pilots. He's brave, charismatic and cocky.

Maverick is known for doing daredevil stunts in the air, playing volleyball in his free time, and for wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses . In the 1986 movie, his wingman is Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, a fellow fighter pilot who also wears aviators .

In the new Top Gun movie, Maverick returns to the Top Gun school as a flight instructor, still sporting his iconic aviators and the same edgy style from the original "Top Gun" movie.

Tom Cruise sunglasses: Where to buy

The best place to buy Tom Cruise's "Top Gun" aviators is the Ray-Ban website . They offer a huge selection of aviators, including the style and color combination Tom Cruise wears in "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original .

The Aviator Classic sunglasses, sometimes known as "Tom Cruise aviators," come in 12 frame-and-lens combinations, including:

Gold frames with green lenses

Black frames with black lenses

Silver frames with gray mirror lenses

Gunmetal frames with green lenses

Gold frames with blue lenses

Gold frames with violet lenses

Ray-Ban also sells a variety of other styles of sunglasses, including the ones worn by other characters in "Top Gun: Maverick." For example, you can buy Ray-Ban Shooters or Ray-Ban Caravan Aviators.

If you normally wear glasses for vision correction, you can also get Ray-Ban prescription sunglasses . In fact, you can buy Ray-Ban Aviator Classics with prescription lenses.

The importance of UV protection and quality sunglasses

Wearing quality sunglasses is just as important for you as it is for a fighter pilot.

That's because the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can hurt your eyes and the surrounding skin, possibly leading to cataracts, eye growths and skin cancer around the eyes. Wearing a pair of quality sunglasses, even on cloudy days, can help keep your eyes healthy.

Choose sunglasses that offer 100% protection from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. To cut down on glare, look for sunglasses with polarized lenses . Much like the glare pilots face while in the cockpit, glare reflected off water and other surfaces can make it hard to see clearly.

If you want prescription sunglasses , ask your optician what lenses and lens coatings will work best for your needs. No matter what sunglasses you get, make sure they will protect your eyes anytime you're in the sun, whether you're flying, driving or just lounging by the pool.

According to American Optical, the design has been worn by actual U.S. military pilots since 1958. Cruise is seen here wearing the silver-framed version of the glasses.

American Optical Original Pilot

Original Pilot

Cruise’s previous Top Gun , which premiered 36 years ago this month (look at the actor and then let this fact sink in), led not only to a surge in military recruitment—at least according to Navy recruitment officials but also contributed to '80s aviation-style trends, including bomber jackets and, of course, aviator sunglasses. Ray-Ban's sales apparently jumped 40 percent after the film’s release. Bottom line: If you saw Top Gun in 1986, you either wanted to become a pilot or look like one.

Cruise has done both. He’s since retained a pilot’s license. For Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise even did his own flying, taking the camera into the cockpit and then up into the sky with him—no camera crew or stuntman required. (As producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Hollywood Reporter , “Every time you see [Cruise] flying, that’s [actually] him in that jet.”)

At the premiere, Cruise exchanged Maverick’s Ray-Ban sunglasses for American Optical’s Original Pilot pair, a slightly updated version of the classic look.

Pick up a pair for yourself before summer volleyball season.

Tom Cruise on the poster for 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Movie tickets aren’t the only thing that Tom Cruise can sell.

The actor’s latest blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick , isn’t just entertaining movie audiences around the globe this summer, it’s inspiring them to buy sunglasses as well, according to Bloomberg Newsweek . Sales of the classic Ray-Ban aviators that Cruise wears in the film have gone up since its release in late May.

It would seem that Paramount Pictures isn’t the only company benefiting from the sequel’s success at the box office. A representative for David Clulow, one of the UK’s biggest sunglass retailers, told the financial publication that the RB3025 Aviator has become one of its top-selling models this summer. This isn’t the first time Ray-Ban has seen a boost in sales of the model driven by the release of a Top Gun movie, points out GQ . In 1986, when the first installment in the franchise came out, sales of the brand’s aviators rose by nearly 40 percent in the seven months after the film’s release.

Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator

Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator

The $163 aviators don’t just look the part, either. They are the actual sunglasses that Cruise’s Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell wears in both movies. His Ray-Bans aren’t store bought, though. They were altered to fit him perfectly.

“Tom is a stickler,” Marlene Stewart, the movie’s costume designer, told The Daily Beast last month. “We had many, many fittings for the glasses. These are classic, Aviator Ray-Bans, and what I do and what costume designers do is you work with props, who is in charge of making the glasses. Altering them, customizing them. I’m in charge of the look, which includes the glasses, but I work in tandem with props, so that when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the Aviators were going to be on board. That was never a question.

Maverick’s Ray-Bans aren’t the only pair of Cruise-related shades you can buy right now. A few years back, Persol re-released the PO3225S sunglasses the actor wore in another of his classic ‘80s movies, Cocktail . Those glasses are still available to buy  for $395.

Tom Cruise is finally back and wearing his trademark Aviator sunglasses in the long-awaited and painfully long-overdue sequel to Top Gun – Top Gun: Maverick .

Tom Cruise’s original Top Gun Sunglasses became iconic in cinema with the 1986 film popularizing the Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses, turning the brand and its classic sunglasses style into something of a legend.

Ray-Ban’s Aviator sunglasses became synonymous with pilots and aviation in general and in fact, with movies & Tom Cruise too for some time. Tom Cruise will also be wearing Aviator style sunglasses in Mission: Impossible 7 next year too.

The iconic Aviator sunglasses style has never gone out of fashion and more than 35 years later, Tom Cruise’s character “Maverick” is still wearing the same style of sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick .

Miles Teller is also seen wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick . Miles Teller plays Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

Miles Teller’s character “Rooster” has opted for the Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan Sunglasses . These are an alternative variant of the classic Aviator shape. A little more square in design, these Aviator sunglasses may not be as iconic as the classic Aviator, but they are by no means any less cool. In fact, these could prove to become a future classic pair of sunglasses off the back of Top Gun: Maverick .

You can find these Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan sunglasses on Amazon.com here or Amazon.co.uk .

Glen Powell Sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarer - Glen Powell - Top Gun: Maverick Sunglasses

Apparently “Hangman” didn’t get the memo about Top Gun pilots wearing Aviator sunglasses. Thankfully though he’s saved the day by wearing these brilliant Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarer sunglasses in the film.

Slightly smaller than the classic Wayfarer sunglasses, these are more rounded off and a little less aggressive in design, but arguably more practical and no less awesome.

Prescription Eyeglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick also features some prescription eyewear too and it looks like they are keeping it faithful by sticking to Ray-Ban here too. We even see an optical version of the Aviator glasses, apparently worn in combat!

Top Gun Maverick - Prescription Glasses

Bashir Salahuddin plays WO-1 Bernie “Hondo” Coleman and wears an optical version of the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer – the Ray-Ban RX5184 New Wayfarer prescription glasses. These are a popular choice from Ray-Ban giving that classic Wayfarer shape but with clear lenses.

Lewis Pullman Wears Optical Ray-Ban Eyeglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Prescription Glasses in Top Gun Maverick

Lewis Pullman plays Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd in Top Gun: Maverick. Unlike most of the other Top Gun pilots, Floyd is seen wearing Ray-Ban RX6389 optical eyeglasses both on the ground and in the cockpit.

These are a large square style metal frame with clear or prescription lenses. They are not too dissimilar from a typical Aviator style.

Want to steal Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun’ look? You can.

Those of you who haven’t been living under a rock for the past two years have been patiently waiting for Tom Cruise and his signature aviators to return in one of the most highly-anticipated military movies in Hollywood history. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ promised all the chest-pounding action, clever one-liners, and heartwarming nostalgia America could handle, and it’s apparently delivering on that promise, with domestic sales at the box office surpassing $300 million .

It might be too late for us to earn our wings and pilot a F/A-18 Super Hornet against the future of aerial combat, but we can at least look the part. According to Marlene Stewart, the ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ costume designer, Cruise was intimately involved in ensuring the Ray-Ban RB3025 aviators that Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell wore during the course of the film were perfect, from frame and lens color pairings to precise sizing. It’s no surprise that a man who’s famous for doing his own death-defying stunts would demand absolute perfection in every detail of his character’s appearance, too.

Now, you can steal that look — the same one that made aviators famous in 1986 when the original ‘Top Gun’ first premiered  — with the real deal from Ray-Ban. Right now, the Ray-Bans donned by Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ can now be yours on Amazon . These premium shades are in sky-high demand, so just be thankful you can land a pair at all.

Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviators

Reviews photo

Feast your eyes on them, folks. The Ray-Ban RB3025 is the model of aviators made famous in ‘Top Gun’ and celebrated in ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ Feel free to mix and match frame and lens colors to match your personal style, or trust Tom Cruise’s taste and stick to the original gold over gray-green color scheme. Most people will prefer the 55-millimeter lenses, but oversized 58- and 62-millimeter lens widths are also available.

These aviators have a classic shape that’s been undeniably cool for generations. They’re as timeless as blue jeans and plain white tee-shirts. They’re as edgy as blacked-out Harleys and distorted electric guitars. And they look just as good in your dress uniform as they do during a pickup game of shirtless volleyball at the O-club. Will they ever go out of style? Maybe so, but not today.

Just Like in 1986, Sales of Aviator Sunglasses Are Up Because of Top Gun

Just Like in 1986 Sales of Aviator Sunglasses Are Up Because of 'Top Gun'

Top Gun: Maverick , the 2022 sequel to the 1986 blockbuster that literally sent Tom Cruise into the troposphere, is hitting all the megahit landmarks: grossing a stunning $1.2 billion globally, becoming Paramount’s biggest worldwide release ever, and…reigniting a fervent public interest in aviator sunglasses?

According to Bloomberg , UK sales of the classic Ray-Ban RB3025 aviators that Cruise’s Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell wears in the franchise are way up since the movie hit theaters—a repeat of the scenario that followed the premiere of the original Top Gun in 1986, which reportedly boosted sales of aviators nearly 40% in the seven months after its release.

And certainly, of all the covetable elements from Top Gun (flight suits, glistening abs, the ability to fly a plane), snagging a pair of shades similar, if not nearly identical, to ones that Maverick wears in the franchise is the most attainable. Nearly identical, that is, because Cruise’s personal pair are meticulously, and characteristically, custom.

“Tom is a stickler,” Maverick costume designer Marlene Stewart told The Daily Beast in June. “We had many, many fittings for the glasses. These are classic aviator Ray-Bans…when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the aviators were going to be on board. That was never a question.” (Cruise, who also produced the film, was a stickler about many other aspects of its production, from its intensive aerial stunts to its military accuracy .) The style has also been Cruise’s personal shades of choice for the last few decades. Just this past weekend, the actor met up with the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic team in Gloucestershire, England, and all of them wore—you guessed it—aviator sunglasses.

Midway through Top Gun: Maverick , in homage to the original Top Gun ’s famous volleyball scene, Tom Cruise and his young acolytes frolic on the beach, playing a game of shirtless touch football. Cruise is just as bare-chested as the rest, clad only in blue jeans and his character’s distinctive, Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses. Glistening in golden hour sunlight, Cruise is resplendent.

The Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses Tom Cruise wears in Top Gun: Maverick were custom-made to suit the star’s face perfectly, a testament to the actor’s famed attention to detail.

“Tom is a stickler,” Marlene Stewart, Maverick ’s costume designer, told The Daily Beast.

“It was really a matter of what size, and how customized was the color of the glass, and the shape. To talk about the scene on the beach, we had fittings with each character to see what’s gonna work for them, but we wanted to establish Tom’s first.”

The Aviators were established as iconic in the original Top Gun (1986). After the movie’s release, sales of Aviator sunglasses leapt by 40 percent; perhaps even more impressively, Aviators have continued to maintain double-digit growth in the following years . The film’s supporting cast members also each rock Ray-Bans that vary depending on the character, but each style works in harmony with the Aviators’ classic shape.

The sunglasses are just one sartorial echo of the original Top Gun . 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick finds Cruise reprising his now-classic 1980s role as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell; the original’s narrative is more or less adhered to—a ragtag band of hotshot pilots must work together to execute an extremely dangerous mission, led by Cruise, who’s aged into the role of teacher. The costumes have only gotten more vigilantly precise.

Cruise, his love interest, played by Jennifer Connelly, and every one of his airborne naval comrades dip in and out of frame like models in a Ralph Lauren ad; Maverick high tails it astride a motorcycle, his jacket billowing in the wind, but only so much.

As for the supporting characters, one standout is Miles Teller as the hotheaded rookie “Rooster.” Teller huffs and puffs through the film rocking a petulant mustache and a pair of Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan shades. Connelly, meanwhile sports the classic Aviators in a shade of golden brown .

The mercenary slickness of the film’s look and feel is no accident. Stewart has a long history in Hollywood; she’s got a particularly established track record when it comes to amplifying unique shades of cinematic masculinity.

One of her earliest collaborations was with Oliver Stone for the Jim Morrison biopic The Doors, and she went on to craft the terrifying T-1000’s look in Terminator 2: Judgement Day . (To my eye, there are more than a few similarities between Robert Patrick’s T-1000 and Cruise’s Maverick, even down to the two actors’ mesmerizing running styles .)

Maverick is also Stewart’s third collaboration with Tom Cruise. “Especially in Top Gun , [Cruise’s character] is very old school in a way, it’s like another period in time when people respected each other and yet they still had individuality and drive and ambition,” Stewart said.

“I had worked with Tony Scott; I did not do the first Top Gun , but I knew the people who worked on it,” Stewart said. “Back in those days, they used original pieces that were around, whether it be an original-issue flight suit or his jeans or his leather jacket.”

Cruise’s onscreen enthusiasm can border on hysterical, so it was essential that his performance in the original was helmed in by his character’s precise, utilitarian wardrobe. Mitchell appears onscreen looking every inch the US Naval Officer in his prime, clad in close-fitting flight suits, rugged bomber jackets, classic denim and, of course, instantly-iconic Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses.

For the new movie, to evoke these shades of nostalgia while ensuring that Cruise’s look was 100 percent contemporary, Stewart and her team went to extraordinary lengths to craft the perfect garments.

“We reproduced the original jacket to kind of change the shape of it, so it wasn’t really too much of that 1980s, oversized, shoulder pad look that was in the original,” Stewart said. “[Cruise’s] physical shape has changed a little bit and the times have changed a little bit. That was the biggest project on the movie. We had gathered almost 40 leather jackets from all over the world from vintage dealers that we Frankenstein-ed together. It had to have the original knit cut on the sleeves. It was maybe a five month process, the whole thing. We had to piece this whole thing together, it was like a Rubik’s Cube.”

While the other elements of Cruise’s wardrobe in the movie look perhaps more standardized and attainable, every single item was custom-made for the star from scratch, down to his white T-shirts and blue jeans, Stewart said. “I worked with a company called Vince that custom-made the jeans that had some stretch in them, that had a boot cut for his cowboy boots,” Stewart said. “We needed to have a higher rise in the back so that when he was riding the motorcycle they worked, and they made other jeans for the scene at the beach.”

“ Top Gun was my much older brother’s favorite movie growing up, so it became my favorite movie,” Yang-Yi Goh , GQ ’s Commerce Editor, said. “It’s so tight and compact, and every scene is so propulsive. When you’re a little kid, the action scenes and fighter jets are the coolest thing on earth, and it’s extremely quotable and quippy. And you have young Tom Cruise, the coolest person who ever existed, looking really cool. All these things left a deep imprint on my brain.”

Cruise’s Aviators in the Top Gun sequel function on a subconscious level: like the star wearing them, they’re a welcome reminder that despite the turmoil that currently defines American life, the classics are still firing on all cylinders. (Cruise has two indelible Ray-Ban moments. The first was Risky Business in 1983, when the actor cackled to high heaven wearing Wayfarers . Ray-Ban sold 200,000 pairs of the shades in 1982, and after the movie came out, Wayfarers sales jumped to 360,000.)

The fashions in the original Top Gun are “very classic and timeless on purpose,” Goh said. “When he’s not in a flight suit, Maverick basically just wears a tight white T-shirt and Levi’s, which is something you could have worn in 1955 or 2022 and looked perfectly normal and cool.”

“Out of all the actors that I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with many, Tom has given me 1,000 percent presence and time to do the job, and you see the results,” Stewart told The Daily Beast. “A lot of actors maybe are not so cognizant of spending that much time, but he is, and it’s really rare.”

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick Sunglasses

In the high-octane American action drama “Top Gun” from 1986 and its equally thrilling 2022 sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” Tom Cruise effortlessly slips into the role of the audacious Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, complete with the iconic Ray-Ban 3025 Aviator Classic sunglasses . These sunglasses, with their unmistakable teardrop shape, robust metal frame, and superior polarized lenses, transcend mere fashion accessories to become a symbol of Maverick’s daring spirit and unparalleled style. Following the debut of the original film, these Ray-Ban Aviators became a cultural phenomenon, driving up sales by an impressive 40% and earning the esteemed title of “Top Gun sunglasses.”

Maverick’s choice of eyewear has a storied heritage, dating back to their 1930s military inception, designed primarily to shield pilots’ eyes from the relentless glare of the sky. Marlene Stewart, the astute costume designer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” recognized the weighty significance of these sunglasses. She meticulously selected the perfect pair for Cruise, reflecting his well-known dedication to authenticity and detail. This rigorous selection process ensured that the Aviator Classics worn by Maverick were not just any sunglasses, but an integral facet of his character’s identity, emblematic of his tenacity and flair.

For those of you under the age of 30 you might not know that once upon a time, many many years ago, Tom Cruise was not yet a borderline crazy Hollywood ass but a cool, up and coming young heartthrob. Following on from cult favorites Taps and Risky Business, Cruise graduated to the big leagues with a feature length commercial for the Air Force, sunglasses and jumpsuits, Top Gun.

Top Gun was… well, it was awesome. Women loved it for the gung ho airmen in close-fitting flight suits. Men loved it for the high speed dog fights and endless, over the top machismo. In short, everyone loved Top Gun.

Looking back through the mists of time to the 1986 release of Top Gun there’s one thing that jumps out in my mind. The Top Gun sunglasses. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and many other cast members spent much of the movie in what could accurately be described as the coolest damned sunglasses ever to grace a face.

Naturally, in the years since the theatrical release of Top Gun there has been a steady, constant supply of guys who think to themselves as the credits roll ‘Damn, I need to get myself a pair of those sunglasses’. In the case of many movies it can often be almost impossible to find the details of costumes and accessories – costume designers usually aren’t eager to give away their secrets – but in the case of the Top Gun sunglasses it couldn’t be easier.

Maverick’s sunglasses, as worn throughout Top Gun, are an example of the timeless classic Ray Ban 3025 Aviators with gold frame.

I remember getting my first pair of Ray Ban Aviators just a couple of months following the release of Top Gun in 1986. A wealthy uncle who’d forgotten too many birthdays splashed out on a pair (the $100 price tag at the time was a little too steep for my 16 year old pocket). I remember the first time I went for a spin on my bike wearing the Aviator’s – my neighbour called out to me as I left the yard, ‘Hey, cool Top Gun sunglasses!’ Since then, even though Ray Ban Aviators have appeared in countless movies, TV shows and on the faces of friends, family, strangers and celebrities for decades, I’ve always thought of Aviators as ‘Top Gun Sunglasses’.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

In the highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Tom Cruise once again dons the iconic Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses that he wore in the original Top Gun film released in 1986. Known for his signature aviator shades, Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell continues to sport the timeless and stylish eyewear that has become synonymous with the Top Gun franchise.

The decision to have Cruise wear the same sunglasses in the sequel pays homage to the classic film and adds an element of nostalgia for fans of the original. The aviator style, with its distinctive tear-drop shape and metal frame, perfectly captures the essence of Maverick’s character as a daring and enigmatic naval aviator.

These Ray-Ban Aviators, specifically the model 3025 (Aviator Classic), have become an enduring symbol of coolness and have remained a popular choice among fashion-conscious individuals over the years. The popularity of these sunglasses soared after the release of the first Top Gun film, and they have since become synonymous with Maverick’s character and the Top Gun brand.

The Aviator sunglasses not only add to Maverick’s iconic image but also serve a practical purpose. As a naval aviator, Maverick needs reliable eye protection against the sun’s glare and other elements when flying at high altitudes. The Ray-Ban Aviators with polarized lenses provide the necessary protection while exuding a classic and effortlessly stylish look.

Tom Cruise’s association with the Aviator sunglasses has cemented their status as a timeless and fashionable eyewear choice. The fact that he continues to wear them in the sequel pays tribute to the enduring appeal of both the actor and the iconic eyewear.

The decision to maintain continuity in the character’s style from the original film reinforces the connection between the two movies and underscores the nostalgic appeal for fans. It allows longtime followers of the franchise to relive the excitement of the original while experiencing the new and thrilling story of Top Gun: Maverick.

With the release of Top Gun: Maverick, it is expected that the Ray-Ban Aviators will once again see a surge in popularity, as fans rush to emulate Maverick’s iconic look. Whether you’re a fan of the Top Gun series or simply appreciate classic and stylish eyewear, the Aviator sunglasses continue to be a timeless choice that captures the essence of Maverick’s legendary character.

Those are Randolph Enginerring Aviators. NOT Ray Ban.

I get it. This is a AM site but at least get your facts right.

James says:

Another commenter suggested that they are American Opticals, so there is certainly more than one opinion on that. And there is no official statement from the production about which sunglasses he actually wore.

I still strongly believe them to be Ray-Bans for two reasons:

1) Tom Cruise is known for wearing Ray-Bans in many of his movies.

2) Any trustworthy source that I can find describes them as Ray-Bans.

http://theweek.com/articles/469629/stories-behind-10-famous-product-placements

http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20150708-the-enduring-appeal-of-aviator-sunglasses

In any case, Ray-Ban 3025 Aviators are easy to find, of good quality, and very close to those used in Top Gun.

If anyone else has some thoughts on this matter, please add a comment below.

Paul Davies Aviation Historian/Pilot. says:

Confirmed by many sources, including Ray Ban themselves, and Baush and Lomb who made the originals in the USA. Model number is RB3025-L0205 in 58mm Gold Frame and G15 Dark Green Glass lenses. Even their competitor:Randolph Engineering confirm the Movie used Ray Bans but they supplied many other movies. The sequal due out as Top Gun Maverick but known as TOPGUN 2 shows him wearing Ray Bans. The confusion is due to different lighting showing the Gold lens frames looking silver and with the production company scratching off the white Ray Ban wording logo on the lens to avoid blatant advertising. Both Ray Ban and Top Gun PR confirm used Ray Bans for both films.

michla says:

In addition to this guys comment randolph ebginering glasses have straight low nose bar and maverick has curved ones like Ray ban

Top Gun was about Navy Pilots not Air Force. The Air Force never takes off and lands on a ship.

Jay Dreiling says:

To Jr. They are indeed RL Aviators 3025’s. You too should get your facts straight before you jump on someone else. …….Shmuck 🙂

Erich says:

6 year late reply but your correct. 😁

Pooks says:

There is very little knowledge on what sunglasses they used in the movie. But, for a movie to ‘make sense’ or be ‘realistic’ on what sunglasses pilots would wear.. it would be American Optical or Randolph Engineering.

I pick American Optical. American Optical was used and still used by NASA and our American Forces. Why? The materials used is better than RayBan. All materials used are military grade. Why would our forces use cheap materials? The RayBan Aviator is a replica of the originator and a replica is always made with cheap materials. It would only make sense that Americans at that time period would want to wear USA Made products. There’s a reason why these sunglasses were only made for the Armed Forces. They were just the best in quality. The only reason I didn’t pick Randolph is that American Optical is older and was widely used by our Forces. It was the first sunglasses to go to the Moon.

Lets ask Tom Cruise?

Thanks for your comment!

I still believe the Top Gun sunglasses to be Ray-Bans, though. Product placement was well used in the 80s, so their choice of brand probably had little to do with the American Forces and NASA. After all, it is said that the movie single-handedly increased the sales of Ray-Ban 3025 by 40%.

Oh, I wish Tom Cruise someday would drop a comment on this question.

Robert Williamson says:

He’s not correct but my guess is that he isn’t the sort of person that takes being corrected well.

Bausch & Lomb developed the first Aviator pilot’s glasses and eventually called them “Ray BAN” literally means that they were designed to ban the rays from pilots eyes.

Wikipedia agrees en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviator_sunglasses

There’s a good history here grailed.com/drycleanonly/aviator-sunglasses-top-gun-history

They were worn by the military in WW2 and by General Douglas Mcarthur. pinterest.co.uk/pin/782359766489192495/

I think he’s just read some advertising material for American Optical and bought it.

The original “Aviators” didn’t have tear drop lenses at all. Randolf Engineering has been supplying US military pilots with original Aviators since at least the 70’s. They’re designed with bayonet style temple frames to fit under flight helmet and combat gear. Robert Duval is wearing them for example in Apocalypse Now. But the model “Concorde” which is also made by Randolph Engineering is the modern version of what Ray Ban calls its 3025 “Aviators”. I own Randolph Engineering and Ray Ban sunglasses and both manufacturers are fantastic in my opinion

jesse. says:

I wanted the sunglasses that Jon Hamm wore on Mad Men, which are not Carvans like he is wearing in Top Gun (you can see the Ray Ban tagging) I bought the American Optics, because I bet that Don Draper wore the same sunglasses as astronauts.

I think the movie very clearly has a Ray Ban tie in.

MattyC says:

Pooks….obviously never has been in the military. Very little of any military equipment supplied is of highest standard. It’s of ‘best budget’. It’s why most of the guys in the Army buy their own boots – issued ones are shit. And the military doesn’t issue sunglasses (well Australian anyway).

Randolph Engineering is still under contract with the US Navy making sunglasses. Original “Aviators”, not the tear drop styled Ran Ban 3025’s seen in Top Gun.

Just found this post. They are definitely NOT AOs. The nose piece wire and top wire on the frame are too close together comparing your pics above with AOs website pics. The nose piece wire tends to favor Ray Bans. Ray Ban had a contract to supply the US military with pilot glasses until 1982 when RE took over and has had it since. It is possible that the sunglasses are cheap knockoffs since the “Ray Ban” printing is missing from the right lens although the costumer could have removed it. Other styles worn by other actors would also support Ray Bans as I remember seeing Cubmaster and Shooter styles worn by other “pilots”. And for “Pooks”… Ray Ban in ’85-’86 was owned by Bausch & Lomb and were US made.

bob lee swaggard says:

if they did use Ray-Ban glasses in top gun, they scrapped the white lettering off the right eye lens. But if you buy Ray-Ban sunglasses today they will not be like the glasses from the 1980s Bausch & Lomb sold the company to Luxottica in 1999.I have owned 5 Ray Bans that were made by Bausch & Lomb and 1 Luxottica pair. in my opinion the Bausch & Lomb glasses were heavier and better made then the Luxottica crap for sale today. my 5 Bausch & Lomb glasses i lost 3, 1 pair fell off the top shelf of my wall locker and hit the concrete lenses first and shattered the 2 lenses. my final Bausch & Lomb glasses were my first I ever owned handed down to me by my uncle he bought the outdoorsman II glasses in 1967 while in the Air Force so i put them away as soon as i learned i could buy my own glasses in the PX for about half the price people paid in the civilian world. When i lost my last pair of B&L glasses( i had those from 1996- 2009) i bought a pair to replace them not knowing of the Luxottica purchase of the company, i lost the Luxottica glasses in 2017, and rather then buy another poorly made glasses from Luxottica, i got out my 1967 glasses and bought a new old stock pair of lenses for the B&L frame that i still had kept away with my uncles old glasses. id rather buy a old pair of B&L glasses then buy a new Luxottica pair

Paul Davies says:

I purchased the original 1986 American B and L made glass etched lens, metal Gold frame ones also. The new ones are not of the same quality but still good. I am getting some eyewear retainer lanyards for mine after reading your message. The Outdoorman version had tight loops fitting around and under behind the ear to keep them on if you looked down. I always thought these were for when doing aerobatics! Cannot wait – although had to for two years of postponement of the film sequel: TopGun Maverick. Trailers are worth watching also. I was a regular pilot at the time of the original and return to flying next year so a full circle journey for Tom and I.

They are vintage Ray Ban made between 1960’s and 1970’s era by Baush and Lomb and made in the USA. Model number is RB3025-L0205 in 58mm Gold Frame and G15 Green lenses.

Correct. TopGun TopMan!

Cruseman says:

Definetly Ray-Ban 3025 in ancient B&L made in USA Times. Take a deep look at the short bottom nose bar piece – it’s typical curved Ray-Ban style. AO and Randolph are using linear bars.

Scott Thrower says:

Fantastic detailed page! (“He did it right …”)

Have you considered starting a post/thread about the sunglasses worn in the NEW Top Gun: Maverick movie being filmed ( for 2020 release ) ? Some set photos are already leaked! Would love to hear this group’s thoughts! Thanks

Thanks for your question.

Of course we need to address the new Top Gun: Maverick (2020) movie! It will probably not be a separate post, but an update to this one. I have only seen the picture from his Twitter account where he turns his head away. I think we need more for it to be relevant. You are always welcome to share your thoughts!

Tom Cruise is wearing his original, or newer version Ray Ban RB3025 Gold framed glasses in G15 Green-grey glass lenses. Original made in USA around 1980s, newer ones made in Italy and Worldwide under licence. Ray Ban will have publicity ready or already out as I write this in December 2020. Top Gun Maverick trailers confirm this also.

Sergio says:

I cannot say if those are Ray Ban or not, but I think they are. It would not make much sense to use the rest of aviator-kind models by Ray Ban for other characters (Shooter, Caravan, Outdoorsman…) and use other brand for the Aviator model.

Andrew says:

These are without doubt Ray Ban RB3025 L0205 in Gold Frame and Dark Green G15 lenses sans white Ray Ban Logo on right lens. FYI, if you want to remove that white Ray Ban logo from the lens you can easily do so by using a penny and carefully scratching it off. The penny is soft enough so it won’t scratch the glass lenses. This works on all other lenses made of glass without any flash or mirror coating. I did this on a pair of Ray Ban and Randolph Aviator sunglasses and in my opinion look way better without that logo there.

Some say Tom Cruise wore grey lens gold framed Ray Ban RB3025 but most of the stills show green light filtering when he is sideways frontal to camera. Yet glasses look very dark? Some say they used reflective mirror lenses but that does not seem right. All the evidence I could get points to you being right. These were original USA made B and L Ray Bans with Gold metal frames, Glass Dark green G15 Lenses and etched into the frames with the size, B and L USA and other detailing. The white “Ray Ban” was removed presumably to avoid claims of blatant advertising?

Kirsten says:

What about Charlotte Blackwood’s (Kelly McGillis) sunglasses?

Dakota says:

Hey i just need some advice, i’m 15 and i’m wondering if it is worth it to buy a pair of ray ban model 3025’s? Is there any other glasses that would be just as good for a lesser price?

Much appreciated Dakota L.

In this article in Inc. the CEO of Randolph Engineering specifically says that Tom Cruise’s sunglasses in Top Gun are Ray Ban…

GQ also describes them as Ray Ban RB3025…

Good man. I found all those and more confirming these were, in 1986 Ray Ban RB2025 Green G15 Lens, possibly Polarised? with Gold metal frames and the Ray Ban white painted logo removed to avoid claims of blatant advertising although much was done in PR between the film people and the Ray Ban company-then and since the owners changed from Baush and Lomb which, by 1985-86 were still made in the USA. Model number is RB3025-L0205 in 58mm Gold Frame and G15 Green (Glass) lenses. The new film: Top Gun Maverick/TOPGUN 2 shows him wearing the same pair or an up to date pair of RB3025 in Gold with green G15 AVIATOR tear drop Lenses. The Randolph Engineering company supplied glasses to many other movies however. Just waiting now to see the sountrack album. The Original TOPGUN Movie soundtrack when released went: “ballistic Mav!”.

Fred Romero says:

So… I guess a pair of (very similar) Bushnell aviator glasses won’t make the cut, huh? In another time and place (in the 70s & 80s) I was a Commercial rated pilot and Flight Instructor by day and a cop at night, and I wore my Bushnell glasses as part of the total image and they seemed to work just fine for both function and image. Upon reading this link I did a deep search in the garage and I found my old glasses… and after looking at them on me in the mirror I’m back baby, nothing cooler than an old pilot with strut and ‘tude!

Clover says:

What is the name of the sunglasses that are worn by Jennifer Connelly in Top Gun 2?

Hassan Razek says:

Hi there – the shades Miles Teller wore in the film, were they size 55mm or 58mm?

Tom Cruise’s Sunglasses in Top Gun Maverick are a Pilot Style Essential

Was there ever any doubt that Tom Cruise would once again wear a pair of classic aviators?

tom cruise maverick glasses

In Top Gun 2 Maverick, Tom Cruise finally revisits the much-loved role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchel. While Crusie is a little older and the CGI is a little flashier, one thing has stayed the same: the actor wears a pair of classic aviator sunglasses.

This is no surprise. The sunglasses were originally developed for pilots so it’s fitting that they would be the frame of choice for one of the movie world’s most famous aviators. Images of Cruise in his uniform with a pair of the shades in the original movie are iconic.

Check out Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator Sunglasses on Amazon

In the new movie, the sunglasses look set to play an equally crucial role. One of the most eye-catching scenes in the trailer is when Crusie is seen racing a plane on his motorbike with his sunglasses and stars and stripes-adorned pilot jacket glimmering in the sun. It’s a moment that shows aviators are the type of shades worn by men of action, those who are prone to jumping on a bike at a moment’s notice and chasing a plane down a runway.

What Sunglasses Does Tom Cruise Wear in Top Gun Maverick?

The sunglasses Tom Cruise wears in the movie look a lot like Ray-Ban Aviator Classics . These are, after all, the frame that was originally designed for U.S pilots way back in 1937. If you want to grab a pair you can check them out on Amazon by clicking the links below. We’ve linked to the pair with a classic gold frame and green lens, but other colors are available.

With many years passed since the original movie took over theatres, Top Gun: Maverick hit screens in May 2022 and has quickly become one of this year's most anticipated blockbusters. The much-awaited sequel not only boasts an all-new cast but also features some of Ray-Ban's signature styles throughout the film.

Top Gun group scene

Released 36 years after the original movie took the world by storm, the much-anticipated  Top Gun: Maverick  movie sequel hit cinemas in late May 2022 and has since sent movie fanatics and Top Gun fans abuzz. Action-packed and suspense-filled, the long-waited sequel stars Tom Cruise as Captian Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, sharing the screen with a star-studded cast that join Cruise in a mission to confront the ghosts of his past.

When most think of Top Gun, we think of Navy bases, Military uniforms and of course, Pilot sunglasses. Famously worn by Cruise in the original movie, the Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses have become synonymous with the blockbuster film with many fondly referring to the Ray-Ban style as an emblem of pop culture. It wouldn't be a Top Gun movie without Ray-Ban's sported by the cast; we've rounded up the Top Gun sunglasses we spotted throughout the film so you can steal their look.

As iconic as they come, US Naval Aviator and the protagonist of the film, Maverick, sports Ray-Ban's Aviator Classic sunglasses. In true pilot fashion, Maverick's sunglasses feature a classic gold metal frame with dark green lenses. Not just a purely cosmetic choice, the original Aviator was created using a green glass lens rather than a grey tint as this colour helped cut out blue light, a prominent lighting issue for pilots flying above the cloud line. Truly timeless and exceptionally well made, the Ray-Ban Aviator remains one of the brand's most popular styles with movie creds as a bonus.

The real-life TOPGUN advisors made cameos in ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

By Miguel Ortiz

Posted on Jan 6, 2024 8:36 PM PST

3 minute read

1986’s Top Gun was the highest-grossing film that year and cemented Tom Cruise’s Maverick into pop culture. Combine quotes like “Talk to me, Goose” and, “I feel the need, the need, for speed,” with aviator sunglasses and leather jackets and everyone knows exactly what you’re referencing. The 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick , picked up the torch from its predecessor and became the 12th-highest-grossing film of all time. Vital to the success of both movies were their respective Navy technical advisors. These real-life TOPGUN instructors even had cameos in the films they helped make.

Remember the “older guy” in the bar scene of Top Gun where Mav first meets Charlie? She shoots down Maverick and goes to sit with him, calling him “Perry.” His real-life name is much cooler: Viper. At least, that’s his callsign. Rear Admiral Pete “Viper” Pettigrew lent his callsign to Tom Skerrit’s character, Commander Mike Metcalf, in Top Gun . Beyond serving as the technical advisor on the film, Viper arguably made Top Gun what it is today.

During casting, producer Jerry Bruckheimer sent Tom Cruise a number of scripts and revisions to bring him on board. However, the young actor remained unconvinced. So, Bruckheimer called Viper and asked him to take Cruise up for an intense flight to convince him that a movie about fighter jets would be exciting. Cruise called his agent right after they landed and accepted the part. The rest is history.

A Stanford graduate, Viper earned his Wings of Gold in June 1966. Flying the F-4 Phantom II, he deployed with VF-151 aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVB-43) to Vietnam from April 1967 to February 1968. Viper served a second combat tour from July 1968 to February 1969. In early 1970, he joined the fledgling U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School and served as an instructor. Of course, the flyers called it TOPGUN. On May 6, 1972, while deployed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) he shot down a MiG-21 in his F-4J with an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile. Viper transferred to the Navy Reserve the next year and retired in 1998.

In Top Gun: Maverick , the sequel film’s technical advisor makes his cameo at the Hard Deck Bar. After Penny rings the bell to signal that Mav is buying everyone a round, an aviator approaches and tells him, “Much appreciated, pal.” That aviator is Captain Brian “Ferg” Ferguson. After attending TOPGUN’s Adversary Instructor Course, Ferg commanded VFC-13, one of the Navy Reserve’s adversary aircraft squadrons dedicated to providing the highest quality adversary training for Navy fleet squadrons and other units.

“Toward the end of my tour of duty as the Deputy Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve, the Chief of Staff for Commander, Naval Air Forces contacted me,” Ferg said in a Navy news story. “He said he thought I might be the right person for the role of advisor for  TOP GUN: Maverick .” Although Ferg initially declined, the Chief of Staff was persistent and Ferg’s wife convinced him to take the job. “She told me, ‘If they get it wrong and you had a chance to make it better that you didn’t take, you’ll be complaining about it for the rest of your life, and if they get it right, you’ll regret that you weren’t a part of it.'”

After graduating from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Ferg attended Navy OCS and commissioned in 1993. Like Viper, he deployed with VFA-151 aboard the USS Constellation (CV-64). During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Ferg flew numerous night combat missions in the F/A-18 Hornet. Working on Top Gun: Maverick , Ferg provided his expertise to Cruise, Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski. “I would work with them and the civilian aerial cinematographer to find a way to make [aerial scenes] work safely and still be spectacular,” he recalled. “I was also responsible for assisting with realism in the script, storyline and uniform accuracy, minus a few scenes that were filmed prior to my arrival.”

“You just can’t fake the results”: Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick Took Special Permission from the Navy to Make a $65 Million Death Machine More Hollywood-Worthy

B ringing back Tom Cruise in the iconic role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from the 1986 film, Top Gun: Maverick has become one of the biggest films in the action star’s esteemed career. The film garnered acclaim on multiple fronts, earning numerous accolades. However, its most notable feature was the breathtaking aerial sequences, which required monumental efforts from the filmmakers.

It involved organizing the navy equipment and aircraft, including a Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet. In addition to the logistics, they also had to install cameras in the jet plane cockpits to film the aerial sequences, a process that demanded special authorization from the Navy.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick Got Special Approvals For the Aerial Sequences

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise , Top Gun: Maverick employed extraordinary measures to capture its groundbreaking aerial sequences. As per Dan of Geek , Cruise, known for his dedication to action sequences, developed a training program for the film’s cast to prepare for filming in the F/A-18 Super Hornet, an aircraft valued at over $65 million.

The training was to adapt them to the intense gravitational forces of the aircraft, which could even cause unconsciousness. And to capture all these maneuvers, they had to get special permission from the Navy to install specifically built 6K IMAX-quality cameras inside the fighter jet cockpits.

“We spent a year working with the Navy to get approvals to put six of these IMAX-quality cameras inside the cockpit,” the filmmaker revealed. He also explained that two cameras were angled towards the actor and two faced forward along with two additional cameras that were mounted externally on the aircraft.

“Maybe I should have forgotten my entire friendship with George Lucas”: Steven Spielberg Regretted Turning Down 1 Tom Cruise Movie to Honor His Best Friend Instead

And their efforts actually paid off, creating a visually breathtaking portrayal of aerial combat. Talking about the efforts put into bringing the iconic and authentic sequences to life on the silver screen, he said, “You can feel the authenticity.”

“It was a tremendous amount of effort and work, but you just can’t fake the results,” he further stated. Cruise and Kosinski are expected to deliver such iconic sequences in the upcoming third installment as well, which is reportedly in development.

Joseph Kosinski Suggests a Potential Delay For Top Gun 3

Following his sequel, which earned over $1.4 billion at the box office and earned an Oscar for Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards, the studio has announced a third installment in the franchise. Joseph Kosinski is expected to return as the director of the film.

However, the filmmaker, who is currently busy with his upcoming film starring Brad Pitt, has suggested that the threequel could potentially face a delay. In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he shared that both he and Cruise are busy with their respective projects.

“We’ve all got very ambitious things ahead of ourselves,” the filmmaker shared, before adding, “Listen, it took 36 years for Maverick, it could take 36 for the next one. I don’t know.”

“The full-metal b**ch in Edge of Tomorrow”: The Movie That Made Tom Cruise Personally Recruit Emily Blunt for $370M Time Loop Flick That Could be Getting a Sequel

However, he also shared that he is determined to work on the third installment as long as he gets an exciting story for the movie. Top Gun 3 is expected to bring back Tom Cruise along with Miles Teller and Glen Powell from the 2022 Oscar-winning movie.

Why Top Gun: Maverick Recast Penny's Daughter

A 33-year-old godzilla movie easter egg perfectly explains why minus one's godzilla is a villain, bad boys 4 rotten tomatoes audience score breaks major franchise record.

  • Tom Cruise thought the original version of Maverick and Penny's sailing scene in Top Gun: Maverick was " boring ."
  • The scene was reshot on choppier waters to add drama and to more effectively establish Penny as a character.
  • It's unclear if Penny will return in Top Gun 3 to continue the romance storyline with Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick star Jennifer Connelly reveals the scene in the movie that had to be reshot because Tom Cruise deemed it " boring ." Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sequel to 1986's Top Gun sees Cruise return as hotshot pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, this time to train new pilots for a high-stakes mission. Although the Top Gun: Maverick reviews raved about the movie's intense aerial sequences, the romance between Maverick and Penny (Connelly) was a crucial part of the story that helped give Maverick more emotional depth.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair , Connelly reveals that Penny and Maverick's sailboat scene in Top Gun: Maverick wasn't originally working for Cruise .

According to Connelly, Cruise decided that the scene was lacking in excitement and that it could be reshot to more effectively establish Penny as a character. Check out Connelly's full comment below:

"Originally, we shot a sailing scene in San Diego. It was a beautiful, beautiful boat. We saw dolphins. It was great. We did the scene, we’re sitting out there, and Tom goes, ‘No, this is boring.’ I was like, ‘Oh.’ [Laughs] He was like, ‘It’s not fast enough. It’s not cool enough. It’s not fast enough. I want Penny to be really strong’ and he was right. "We went to San Francisco, where it’s super windy, and it was an entirely different experience. We’re like getting soaked, and the wind. It’s so much better. And, like I was saying, we don’t have that much time with those characters to establish who they are. So a gesture like that, okay she’s sailing a boat and it’s calm and lovely versus she’s sailing this boat, and it’s this really like high-octane adrenaline experience. I think it was a great choice."

Will Penny & Maverick's Romance Storyline Continue In Top Gun 3?

There are several directions the franchise could go in.

Top Gun: Maverick was a major success both critically and commercially in 2022. It's no surprise, then, that Top Gun 3 is confirmed to be in development, with both Kosinski and Cruise expected to return. It's been reported that both Miles Teller and Glen Powell are also being eyed to return as Rooster and Hangman, respectively.

Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed to Screen Rant that a strong story idea is in place for Top Gun 3 , but Cruise's busy schedule might mean the film doesn't happen anytime soon.

Unfortunately, it's unclear at this early stage in development whether any other members of the Top Gun: Maverick cast will return, and that includes Connelly. The first film ends with Maverick and Penny taking a ride in Maverick's P-51 Mustang, seemingly now as a couple, but a sequel may not continue this happy ending. To add drama and conflict to the story, it's likely that Maverick and Penny's relationship won't be smooth sailing if it does return to be a focus of the next movie .

Top Gun: Maverick initially cast somebody different to play Penny's daughter, Amelia, but the actress was replaced before filming began.

It's also possible, however, that Top Gun 3 won't include Penny at all. Maverick and Penny could still be happily together in the world of the film, but the story could instead focus on fleshing out other characters' relationships. Many questions remain about the future of the franchise, but Cruise was evidently interested in making Maverick and Penny's relationship as compelling as possible in Top Gun: Maverick .

The Real Reason Netflix’s New Hit Could Make Glen Powell a Star

The secret to being a leading man isn’t just being a ron. it’s being a gary..

The press has been attempting to crown Glen Powell the next big thing—Hollywood’s new leading man, the latest addition to the A-list—for years, but he’s never quite transcended That Guy status: that guy from Everybody Wants Some!! , that guy from Set It Up . In Top Gun: Maverick , he nearly out-Cruised Tom Cruise, emerging as the heir apparent to his cocky charm despite the fact that the movie was constructed to pass the torch to a different actor. And in return, he was gifted access to a private screening of a six-hour “film school” video in which Cruise himself explains the finer points of filmmaking, right down to how different kinds of cameras work. It’s not clear whether that video also included instructions on how to become a movie star, but Powell’s latest movie, Hit Man , shows that he’s learned one of the most important lessons of Cruise’s career: You have to make it look hard .

Powell has the kind of easy good looks that have kept him working steadily since his teens (he made his debut as “Long-Fingered Boy” in Spy Kids 3 ). But being good-looking isn’t a persona, the convergence of distinctive characteristics that separates a movie star from an Instagram influencer. Stars are beautiful (or, at worst, interesting-looking), but they aren’t just beautiful. In a world where people learn their angles before they learn to drive, mere prettiness is everywhere you look, and it takes more than a pleasing silhouette to hold our interest. You could hardly imagine a more hyperbolically shapely couple than Powell and Sydney Sweeney in Anyone but You , which overcame a slow start at the box office to become a global hit, and the first real proof of concept for his putative stardom. But the movie falls flat, because neither Powell nor Sweeney is allowed to be really vulnerable. They want each other, sure—who wouldn’t?—but they don’t need each other. The best romances have a hint of desperation to them, but desperation feels like weakness, and weakness is a quality too few would-be matinee idols are willing to allow themselves right now. It’s the romantic-comedy equivalent of the Fast and the Furious battles between jacked-up action figures whose contracts stipulate that they can never lose an onscreen fight . The most inspiring heroes are the ones who get knocked down and struggle back to their feet, not the ones who magically dodge every punch. (The John Wick movies know this in spades.)

Anyone but You tries to scuff up Powell’s Adonis aura, but even the moments that are meant to play as embarrassing, and thus humanizing, don’t land the way they should. When he’s forced to strip off his clothes to escape a venomous spider that’s slipped into his shorts, you don’t identify with his discomfort, you just marvel at his workout regimen. Hit Man , which Powell co-wrote with director Richard Linklater, tries something different: It just makes him look ordinary. As Gary Johnson, a psychology professor at a New Orleans college, he still looks like Glen Powell, but a version who doesn’t know that he’s Glen Powell. He’s got a pair of wire-rimmed glasses, two cats named Id and Ego, and an ex-wife who still thinks he’s a nice guy, just not a very passionate one. He may advise his students, quoting Nietzsche, to “live dangerously,” but he’s as safe, and as dull, as it gets.

On the side, though, he works as a technician for the police’s undercover unit, and is in charge of the recording equipment that catches people in the act of trying to hire their own assassins. One day, he’s forced to step into the leading role, passing himself off as a contract killer—and it turns out he’s good at it. His experience of studying human behavior, as well as the observational skills honed from a lifetime of sitting on the sidelines, gives him the ability to read each potential criminal and transform himself into whatever their idea of the perfect hit man might be. The series of disguises he adopts, from skeet-shooting good old boy to pasty British fop, form a great string of sight gags, but they’re also goofy as hell. Far from demonstrating Gary’s ability to vanish into every role, they come off like the world’s most cringe-inducing demo reel, or a failed audition for Saturday Night Live . But the cumulative effect is that we’re assured that Glen Powell isn’t afraid to look like a fool, and assured in our conviction that we want him to look like Glen Powell.

Eventually, Gary morphs into Ron, the suave, supremely confident hit man that Maddy (Adria Arjona) hires to kill her abusive ex-husband—or at least tries to until he talks her out of it. Maddy and Ron start up a relationship, but because he can’t be seen with her—undercover agents aren’t supposed to stop people from incriminating themselves, and they’re definitely not supposed to start dating them afterwards—that relationship is almost entirely sexual. She starts dressing up for him, as a sexy flight attendant warning him about the bumpy ride ahead, not realizing that he’s playing out her fantasies every minute they’re together. But, we start to think, maybe Gary was Ron all along, just waiting for an eruption of impulsive id to counteract his controlling ego. The transformation is subtle but definite, as if a switch has been flipped. During one of Gary’s classes, he lets enough Ron slip through for one of his students to wonder, “When did our teacher get hot?”

Naturally, we know that he was hot all along. But because Hit Man allows him to look un-hot, it’s like a secret between him and us, an intimate bond shared between the viewer and the viewed. It’s that feeling that makes an actor into an icon, and he’s finally found the right way to tap into it.
