Recent tour reviews

Very hard working band! Nearly 2 hours of non-stop high energy performance. Big Band sound, percussion excellent, amazing guitar riffs - however - I was expecting Susan as a singer and the performance was focused on Derek's, Susan's and other band members instrumental performance. I enjoyed the first couple of long riffs but it quickly became like eating too much of a good desert. As good as they are I almost left. The warm up was Los Lobos also with strong guitars so the evening was too much of excellent performances I wasn't there to experience.

Now Sac Memorial Auditorium. Recently remodeled a fine venue for many events. But if you're there for music the only acceptable seats are center floor. Sides and upper deck experience far too much sound distortion. I walked around [we were side upper deck] and differences were very clear. So be aware of discounted pricing for areas other than the floor.

Self indulgent and disinterested in their audience, this was one of the most disappointing gigs I've seen in a long time.

Never ending solo spots from all 12 musicians onstage, it seemed like a dull rehearsal room jam.

Bands can vary their setlists, but they are usually built on key songs that form the foundation to every show.

TTB don't care what the audience. As Derek Trucks will spend the whole show with his back to the audience, Susan Tedeschi tells the audience they won't be playing Midnight in Harlem as they played it the night before.

I waited years to see this band, and what a let down it was.

Moving up to arenas?

That's going to be painful.

I'll be washing my hair that night.

Paid $150 for this concert which was a lot. It was the worst concert have ever been to. My friend and I️ had to leave before it ended.

Love Susan Tedeschi vocal but she hardly sang. It was one long instrumental jam session after another. She had her back up vocals singing and a brass section that frankly did not vibe for me with this type of music . I️ love the blues. Derek was incredible on the guitar but like every song had a long guitar session session.

Most concerts are 70% about the music, lyric song and 30% instrumental. This was the opposite. Wow so dissappinted

Tedeschi Trucks Band have today announced their fifth and most ambitious recording project to date, with the upcoming release of the expansive   I Am The Moon .

The Grammy-winning 12-piece founded and fronted by the husband and wife team of guitarist Derek Trucks and singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi will present I Am The Moon across four albums comprising 24 original songs, each album with a companion film.

The titles are I. Crescent, II. Ascension, III. The Fall, and IV. Farewell , to be released in successive months beginning with I. Crescent on June 3, when it will be available digitally and on CD. All vinyl configurations, including individual LPs and the 4-LP I Am The Moon Deluxe Box will be available on September 9.

‘It Serve You Right To Suffer’: John Lee Hooker’s Repentant Blues

‘spoonful’: howlin’ wolf’s classic blues song, t-bone walker’s ‘complete imperial recordings’: the fountainhead of modern blues guitar.

I Am The Moon is inspired by a mythic Persian tale of star-crossed lovers, and emotionally driven by the isolation and disconnection of the pandemic era.Its two hours-plus of new music unfolds as a genre-defying tapestry that takes the band boldly into new creative territory. Watch a trailer here:

Tedeschi Trucks Band - I Am The Moon (Trailer)

Trucks says that the decision to sequence and release I Am The Moon in four distinct episodes arrived “when we started thinking of records we love.” In particular, he cites the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1967 LP Axis: Bold as Love . “It’s 36 minutes long. That’s the way to digest a record,” he reflects. I Am The Moon: The Film will therefore stand as immersive visual companions to each album, each one debuting three days before each audio release to give fans an early chance to digest each album in full, as a communal listening and viewing experience, via the TTB’s YouTube channel.

The films are directed by Alix Lambert and combine studio and performance footage with atmospheric photography and imagery to reflect the kaleidoscopic textures of the albums. The launch of the full project comes with the appearance of I Am The Moon: The Film – I. Crescent on Tuesday, May 31 at 6pm PST/9pm ET.

The ‘I Am The Moon’ schedule

After the first film and album, the release schedule features the film premiere of I Am The Moon: II. Ascension on June 28, with the album on July 1; I Am The Moon: III. The Fall (film premiere July 26, album release July 29; and I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell (film premiere August 23, album release August 26.

The concept behind the new project was suggested by band vocalist Mike Mattison in May 2020, two months after they were forced off the road by the pandemic. The 12th century poem Layla & Majnun by Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi inspired the title of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs , Eric Clapton ’s 1970 double LP with Derek and the Dominos that has been a major influence for TTB.

Ganjavi’s source material resonated very differently with Mattison and the rest of the band, as they found complex themes and storylines to inspire their creative process. The result was a new, modern interpretation of the 100-page poem, and a set of songs written collectively and collaboratively. By January 2021, they were recording at Tedeschi and Trucks’ home studio, Swamp Raga, in Jacksonville, FL. Derek produced the sessions and longtime studio engineer Bobby Tis oversaw recording and mixing.

‘Something bigger and thematic’

“It’s amazing,” says Trucks, “because we wrote most of this music in a pretty short time span. There are even chord changes that mirror other tunes on the albums – themes and variations, lyrical allusions, that pop back up. You always want to do something bigger and thematic. This is the first time it happened naturally.”

The limited-edition, I Am The Moon Deluxe Box Set , each individually-numbered, includes all four albums in the I Am The Moon series on 180 gram black vinyl, plus additional special items will be available on September 9, only via the TTB store and the Fantasy Records store .

Tedeschi Trucks Band begin a major North American tour on June 24, extending until September 3. Their month-long European itinerary starts on October 17 and includes three nights at the London Palladium, ending with three nights in Paris.

Pre-order  I Am The Moon . Limited bundles of all four album volumes are available exclusively via the uDiscover Music store .

Tedeschi Trucks Band Have Jams to Last All Summer

  • By David Browne

David Browne

Right out of the gate, the Tedeschi Trucks Band have always thought big. In 2010, the peak of an indelible pop era that brought us Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and so much more glorious pop, who else would launch a big-band ensemble, complete with a horn section, that blended soul, R&B, blues and Southern rock? The very idea seemed preposterous, especially economically. But the musical and real-life couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks went for it, and the hookup of Tedeschi’s reserved  but warm delivery (she sounds like she could have been Bonnie Raitt’s daughter) and Trucks’ Allmans-sharpened skills as a lead and slide guitarist was a natural.

On I Am the Moon, they ratchet up their ambitions several perilous notches. Rather than release a single album, they’ve spread their 24 new songs over four mini-albums. Part one, Episode 1. Crescent, has just landed, with parts two through four arriving between July 1 and August 26. If that weren’t crazy enough, the whole project is based on The Story of  Layla & Majnun , the writer Nizami’s 12 th century Persian poem about a separated couple that was described by Lord Byron as the “Romeo and Juliet of the East.” If the title sounds familiar, yes, it’s the same work that inspired Eric Clapton’s Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs milestone with his band Derek and the Dominos.   Layla & Majnun has already been the basis for an opera, a chamber music piece and a dance production. And did we mention that each of the Tedeschi Trucks Band mini-albums comes with an accompanying film? Who even dares to do anything like this anymore?

Over the years, the band has been hampered by somewhat less than inspired songwriting; their records were likable enough but rarely as energizing as their live shows. In that regard, the structure of I Am the Moon works in their favor: Shorter, more digestible and more compact records, with only a half-dozen tracks each, distill their essence in shorter bursts. Starting with “Hear My Dear,” whose lithe soul groove and title tip its hat to Marvin Gaye,  Episode  1. Crescent   one of the strongest pieces of music they’ve ever done. The stately folk of “I Am the Moon” and the swirly jam-soul of “Circles ‘Round the Sun” stay with you, and the 12-minute instrumental “Pasaquan” wails like a modern-day Allmans jam (not surprising given all the years Trucks logged in that band during its later years).

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Tedeschi, Trucks and their co-singing and co-writing band mates Mike Mattison and Gabe Dixon were also wise to avoid getting too specific with characters’ names and dialogues. Instead, the songs dwell on general themes of loneliness, isolation, despair and connection—which not only avoids concept-album bloat but makes the lyrics more universal and timelier. (In fact, the project began during lockdown, when Mattison proposed a reading group for the whole band, which began with Layla & Majnun .). Like Clapton’s Layla , I Am the Moon amounts to one long unrequited love song. But the songs, most sung and co-written by Tedeschi, bring a woman’s point of view to the saga, instead of the male-centric Clapton take (“How’s a girl supposed to love a man/When he’s playing with my emotions?/He’s flying home but he never lands”).

The mini-albums to come over the next two months are sprinkled with other gems: the tight soul-band strut “Playing with My Emotions,” the dreamy “All the Love,” and the acoustic-blues shuffle “So Long Savior.” On the third and fourth discs, the songs grow a bit more pedestrian, but absorbing each in small half-dozen doses like this still benefits what could have been a truly unwieldy undertaking. At a time when rock itself has become a niche genre,   I Am the Moon feels like nothing less than one of the last cracks at a major rock-album statement: the bookend of an era, but a fitting farewell.

Concert review: Tedeschi Trucks Band plays one of the best Vancouver shows of 2024 Back to video

Based on its show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Saturday night, there may not be a better purveyor of Southern rock ‘n’ soul on the circuit today.

The dozen-member dynamo left the sold-out crowd in utter ecstasy on the one Canadian date of the West Coast leg of its North American tour. (If you missed the Vancouver concert, there are still two nights in Seattle coming up. Toronto fans can catch the group on Aug. 15 . Truthfully, this is a group worth going the distance to see.)

Tedeschi Trucks was founded in 2010 when couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks decided to marry together their two bands after touring 2007 as the Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival.

The group has five full-length studio recordings and three live albums to its credit. Their 2011 debut, Revelator, won the 2012 Grammy for best blues album. But the only way to truly appreciate the unit’s fusing of the best elements rock, blues, swamp boogie and more is to experience it live.

The sound coming from the double drummers, three-piece horn section, trio of backup vocalists, organ and the twin guitar attack of the namesake founders was massive from the opening notes of Playing With My Emotions. The tidal wave of crazy groove the band rode in on had everyone on their feet as Trucks delivered the first of many incredible solos.

The nephew of the late Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks became an official member of the legendary Southern rockers in 1999, and his prodigious talents on his instrument also drive the more experimental Derek Trucks Band as well. His dexterous fingerpicking enables him to not only shred like a demon, but also to deliver heartfelt fluid rhythm playing in a jazzier vein. His slide work on his custom red Gibson SG has rightfully earned him global fame as a master.

Of course, the group has another phenomenal guitarist in its ranks as well.

Susan Tedeschi’s guitar work brings to mind the swinging, biting attack of blues greats such as Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland. Her wah-wah work on Ain’t That Something was a master class in how to use the often clunky pedal as a means of colouring the chords rather than full-on funking out. The group did plenty of that as well.

The sound doesn’t stop with the two guitar titans. Tedeschi is a brilliant belter in the tradition of Bonnie Raitt and Lou Ann Barton, who burns with emotion when she sings. Every member in the crew brings their best to the performance.

Singer Mike Mattison took the lead on his sweet ballad Emmeline, clearly demonstrating that any band would be glad to have him as their lead singer. Ditto keyboardist Gabe Dixon, singer Alecia Chakour and Mark Rivers who all also had their moments in the spotlight. The rhythm section of bassist Brandon Boone, drummer Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady never stopped swinging, and saxophonist Kebbi Williams, trumpeter Ephraim Owens and trombonist Elizabeth Lea blew some epic solos as well.

When they all went for broke on the boogie of Made Up Mind, the audience was brought to its feet screaming just because of how much energy was running through them. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre became a cathedral for the gospel-rocking congregation.

How the group would followup that experience in the second set was anyone’s guess. Kicking it off with a wicked take on Blind Willie McTell’s Statesboro Blues, which the Allman Brothers made famous on the Live at the Filmore album, made it seem like there hadn’t even been a break.

The group would go on to play a brilliant version of the Allman’s Dreams, a searing take on Aretha Franklin’s It Ain’t Fair and closed out the night with a Bayou-soaked version of Joe Cocker’s High Time We Went. Fans would have been happy to have the band play all night.

No one left early. Most woke up this morning with a perma grin pasted on their faces.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band has always been great live, but you probably needed to have some taste for their chosen genre. Last night, the band took it to a level that could make a non-blues rocker into a devout believer. It was that good.

Tedeschi Trucks Band Caps Pacific Northwest Run With Two Nights In Seattle [Photos/Audio]

tedeschi trucks band, tedeschi trucks band tour, tedeschi trucks band seattle, tedeschi trucks band 5/27/24, tedeschi trucks band 5/28/24, paramount theatre, derek trucks, susan tedeschi, jeff fielder,

After kicking off a fresh leg of the band’s ongoing Deuces Wild tour with two nights in Portland and a one-off up in Vancouver, B.C., Tedeschi Trucks Band landed in Seattle for two shows at Paramount Theatre on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday’s show fell on Memorial Day, so it felt more like a Sunday show. The band dug right in with “Don’t Let Me Slide” and followed it up with high-energy crowd favorites “Playing With My Emotions” and “Soul Sweet Song” before breaking into a crown jewel of the group’s impressive discography with the title track to 2022’s four-part audio-visual epic, I Am The Moon .

The first set finished with “Idle Wind”, which featured a double drums jam between Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell and Isaac Eady . The second set included a range of covers from The Wood Brothers ‘ “Smoke Ring Halo” and Bob Dylan ‘s “Down in the Flood”, which together opened the set, to The Allman Brothers Band ‘s “Stand Back” and Blind Joe Reynolds ‘ “Outside Woman Blues”, which led into an epic, set-closing “Bound for Glory”. Van Morrison ‘s “Caravan” and TTB fave “Made Up Mind” brought up the rear in the encore slot.

Night two at Paramount Theatre likewise featured a mix of classic covers, familiar TTB material, and some selections from I Am The Moon , but the show was not without surprises. For one, Susan Tedeschi sat in on Eady’s drum kit and played alongside Falcon during the second set-opening  I Am The Moon song “So Long Savior”, and the band was joined by guitarist Jeff Fielder for a pair of songs dedicated to late NBA star and music superfan Bill Walton , “Angel From Montgomery” and “Sugaree”, before closing the set with “I Want More” > “Beck’s Bolero”. An extended encore began with a potent pairing of “Swamp Raga” > “Midnight In Harlem”, followed by a cover of Joe Cocker ‘s “High Time We Went”, once again featuring Jeff Fielder.

Tedeschi Trucks Band’s  Deuces Wild  tour continues through the summer and into fall with dates around the U.S. and Canada featuring special guests  Little Feat , Margo Price ,  Joe Purdy , and  Greensky Bluegrass on select shows before concluding with two nights at The Capitol Theatre  in Port Chester, NY on October 8th and 9th. Click  here  for more details and visit the band’s  website  for tickets.

TTB also  just announced  it will begin streaming shows live via  nugs starting this week with the band’s upcoming two-night run at Berkeley, CA’s Greek Theatre  on May 31st and June 1st and posted live audio from 19 shows dating back to 2016.

Here’s How To Have A Euro Trip Without Ever Leaving Texas

tedeschi trucks european tour

This meme posted by @dontdallasmyaustin on Instagram gave us a bit of inspiration. We can’t visit Europe this summer, but we could perhaps visit some European cities in Texas. And we’re all very well aware that Texas is larger than many European countries.

tedeschi trucks european tour

You can have a Euro Trip by visiting these European cities in Texas!

Located in Ellis County, Italy, Texas was named after the country by a settler who had visited the European country. We couldn’t locate any other nods to its namesake while researching. However, we did discover that they list Dale Evans, wife of Roy Rogers, as a notable person on the town’s Wikipedia page (she was born in Uvalde though).

Located not quite as far from Austin, Florence is situated near Georgetown in Williamson County. However, according to the “Handbook of Texas Online” the origin of the town’s name is uncertain: it may have derived from Florence, Alabama, an early home of the first postmaster, or it may refer to Florence Brooks, the daughter of the town’s first merchant.

The Northeast Texas town follows the tradition of American cities named Paris by featuring a 65-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower in the town square. In 1998, presumably as a response to the 1993 construction of a 60-foot tower in Paris, Tennessee, the city placed a giant red cowboy hat atop its tower.

tedeschi trucks european tour

But if you really want to experience french life, head to Castroville , a quaint town with a French heritage unique to Texas. Nestled on the bank of the Medina River just 20 miles west of San Antonio, Castroville was founded in 1844 by Henri Castro, a French empresario and close associate of Sam Houston. Castro recruited many of the colonists for his new town from the Alsace region of northeastern France. Over the years, these settlers would build a community that more closely resembled a European village than a frontier town in Texas.

tedeschi trucks european tour

Located in Polk County, Moscow had approximately 170 residents as of the year 2000. We can’t imagine it’s grown much since. At one time, however, Moscow was a flourishing town with saloons, hotels, and mule-drawn street cars. The community was named for the city in Russia after postal authorities refused to accept the townspeople’s first choice, which was Greensboro. There was already a post office in the state with a similar name.

New Berlin is the County Seat of Guadalupe County. It was founded in 1868 by German immigrants who came to the area and was named after the German capital. As of 2010, the population was just over 500.

tedeschi trucks european tour

If you really want to visit a German inspired town, these next two are where you should go. Named after Prince Frederick of Prussia, Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 and is notable as the home of Texas German, a dialect spoken by the first generations of German settlers who initially refused to learn English. It is the sister city of Montabaur, Germany and is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Texas.

tedeschi trucks european tour

Fredericksburg shares many cultural characteristics with  New Braunfels , which was established by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels one year earlier. The seat of Comal County is well known throughout the state as it is home to Schlitterbahn, Gruene , the Guadalupe and Comal rivers, and Wurstfest, a German-style sausage festival held every November.

tedeschi trucks european tour

Vienna , Texas is a teeny tiny town in Lavaca County with a population one can assume is under 50 (it was 40 as of the year 2000). The city was founded in 1840 but it wasn’t until after the Civil War when German and Bohemian immigrants began to settled here. Most every structure in Vienna was washed away in a 1940 flood of the Navidad.

Just a short drive from both Dallas and Tyler, Athens is the “home of the hamburger.” The County Seat of Henderson County, Athens was established in April, 1846, four months after Texas was annexed by the United States. History claims that a man known as Uncle Fletcher Davis created the first hamburger in the late 1880s at a small café on the downtown square. According to legend, Uncle Fletch took his sandwich to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis where the sandwich was first introduced. The McDonald’s Hamburger University has given this historic evidence their stamp of approval and in 2006 a bill was introduced into the Texas Legislature to make Athens, Texas, “Original Home of the Hamburger.” Athens also claims to be the “Black Eyed Pea Capitol.”

United Kingdom

Located in Kimble County, London was established in the late 1870s or early 1880s by a horse trader and former Union Army officer. There’s also a town in Rusk County called New London . The 2015 historical novel “Out of Darkness” by Ashley Hope Pérez depicts New London in the 1930s.

Named after the city of Liverpool in England, there’s not much to see in Liverpool , Texas as it’s mostly just land.

The county seat of Hidalgo County, Edinburg is located in the Rio Grande Valley region. Originally named Chapin, it was renamed when Dennis Chapin was involved in the shooting death of Oscar J. Rountree at the Dan Breen Saloon in San Antonio. The community changed its name to “Edinburg” to honor John Young, a prominent businessman who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. No idea why the ‘h’ wasn’t included.

tedeschi trucks european tour

Dublin is the official Irish Capital of Texas as Governor Rick Perry signed a bill that designates that in 2005. The town is the former home of the world’s oldest  Dr Pepper  bottling plant. The plant was for many years the only U.S. source for Dr Pepper made with real cane sugar (from Texas-based Imperial Sugar). The Dublin Bottling Works no longer produced Dr. Pepper but it does continue to make various other sugar-sweetened soda products.

Netherlands

Nederland , Texas is a part of an area known as “the Golden Triangle,”which comprises Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. Nederland was founded in 1897 by Dutch settlers as a repayment for financial services of Dutch bankers who financed the Kansas City Southern railroad line that runs through the center of the city. The Dutch Windmill Museum is an authentic replica of a Dutch windmill. Built in 1969, it was created to honor the settlers from the Netherlands that founded Nederland. In present day, it makes for a lovely Instagram photo. The museum is located in Tex Ritter Park.

You can also go to Holland , Texas although it’s named after an early settler, not the European city.

Egypt is the oldest community in Wharton County. Originally called Mercer’s Crossing, people started referring to the area as Egypt after they began providing corn to others in the drought-stricken area. The name is actually a biblical reference.

tedeschi trucks european tour

New Sweden is located just five miles northeast of Manor in Travis County. The community was established in 1873 and the first pioneers of this settlement came from the historic Swedish province of Småland. The community is most known for its gorgeous New Sweden Lutheran Church.

European Texas Road Trip Map: Take A World Tour Without Leaving Texas

Texas is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. Being on the border to Mexico, the state welcomes in endless Mexican culture that we can see in almost any Texas city. However, there are entire local cities named after other cultures with hidden gems that will make you want to head out on a European Texas road trip ASAP. Pack your essentials and head out to visit all of the Europe-influenced towns across the state for an epic world tour.

Nederland, Texas

See on Instagram

Location: Jefferson County near Beaumont

Why You Need To Go: This land was settled by Dutch immigrants back in 1897 and has since been home to a bit of cultural history that you can explore. Checking out the Dutch Windmill Museum is a must when you're here.

Dublin, Texas

Location: Erath County near Dallas-Fort Worth

Why You Need To Go: Dublin has some Irish twists to it, making it a fun place to stop by for a drink. But when we say drink, we mean a tasty soda made with real cane sugar, since the town is the former home of the world's oldest Dr. Pepper bottling plant that is now a museum.

Paris, Texas

Location: Lamar County near Dallas-Forth Worth

Why You Need To Go: There isn't only one Paris that is home to an Eiffel Tower, this Texas version of the City of Love has its own country version of the tall landmark!

New London, Texas

Location: Rusk County near Tyler

Why You Need To Go: New London, once known as just London, is a tiny town just waiting to be explored. You can stop by one of the oldest dance halls in the state here.

Athens, Texas

Location: Henderson County near Dallas-Fort Worth

Why You Need To Go: Athens has a bigger population than some of the other cities on this map, giving it a populated city feel without losing its small-town charm. This city calls itself the "Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World," so you better try some if you stop by.

Florence, Texas

Location: Williamson County near Austin

Why You Need To Go: To get some delicious wine, of course! Texas' Florence is known for tasty wine coming from its Hill Country vineyards.

Naples, Texas

Location: Morris County near Texarkana

Why You Need To Go: The town of Naples isn't densely populated, giving visitors a fresh breath of air and some great views of nature. Don't miss out on their famous Watermelon Festival!

Geneva, Texas

Location: Sabine County near Nacogdoches

Why You Need To Go: This tiny town is considered to be the oldest "continuously occupied town in East Texas." The Sabine National Forest that surrounds it is home to some incredible nature and wildlife views, you'll have to stop by just to go for a lush green hike.

Italy, Texas

Location: Ellis County near Dallas-Fort Worth

Why You Need To Go: Despite their title of "Biggest Little Town in Texas", this tiny town is pretty small and adorable. The community doesn't hold many Italian roots, but it still is a notable spot to visit on your Texas World Tour.

Holland, Texas

Location: Bell County near Austin

Why You Need To Go: This small town is a part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metro area. You can stop by to see the beautiful Central Texas views or take part in their famous Holland Corn Festival.

New Sweden, Texas

Location: Travis County near Austin

Why You Need To Go: New Sweden's most notable feature is its 104-foot-tall spire from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, AKA the most photographed church in Texas.
