How to Get to TANGADAN FALLS, La Union + Sample Itinerary & Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

If you think La Union has nothing else to offer other than surfing, you’re gravely mistaken! Elyu has a diverse set of wonders kept in its nooks and crannies. But if you’re staying in Urbiztondo in San Juan, one attraction that you shouldn’t miss is Tangadan Falls !

La Union has over a dozen waterfalls spread throughout the province — from the mildly sloping Lang-ay Falls in Tubao up to the little-known Occalong Falls in Luna. But perhaps the most popular of these cascades is Tangadan Falls , tucked in the sleepy town of San Gabriel. Punctuating a portion of the Baroro River, this waterfall has two tiers, each with a natural pool at the base, surrounded by limestone cliffs and giant boulders.

Tangadan Falls

Tangadan Falls is located in Barangay Amontoc in the mountainous area of San Gabriel, La Union. So the first step is to get into La Union. This waterfall is too far for a day trip straight from Manila, so most travelers visit it as part of a greater La Union itinerary. They usually book a hotel or resort in either San Juan (particularly Urbiztondo Beach) or San Fernando City. From here, you can dedicate half a day to this waterfall.

Planning to visit Tangadan Falls soon? Here are some of the things to know before you go.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

How to Get to Tangadan Falls

1. board a bus to san fernando..

If you’re coming from Metro Manila, the only transit companies that we know carry passengers to La Union directly are PARTAS and VIRON Transport (as of May 2022). Both have terminals in Cubao . You can also find La Union-bound buses at Viron’s Sampaloc Terminal .

Board a bus to San Fernando City or San Juan, depending on where your accommodation is located. Most La Union buses terminate in San Fernando City.

Alternatively, if you’re staying elsewhere, you may catch a bus bound for Abra or Ilocos instead and alight in San Juan or another town in La Union. (Note that NOT ALL buses allow this, so it’s important to ask a staff member before booking a ticket.)

For the schedule, fare and other important reminders, we wrote a dedicated article here: MANILA TO LA UNION BUS TRAVEL INFORMATION! ✅

If you are bringing your own car, just use Google Maps or Waze, then search San Gabriel Municipal Hall.

2. Ride a tricycle or jeepney to San Gabriel Town Proper.

The travel time is about 45 minutes from San Fernando and about 30 minutes from San Juan. Jeepney fare is between P15 and P20 pesos.

La Union Tricycle

  • If you’re coming from San Fernando, head to Tanqui Transport Terminal to catch a jeepney.
  • If you’re coming from San Juan, go to People’s Park, located just across the San Juan Municipal Hall.

A more convenient (but more expensive) option: Hail a tricycle that will take you directly to San Gabriel Municipal Hall. Roundtrip fare starts at P500 if you’re solo, or more if you’re a group. (We paid P800 for a party of 3.) The driver can wait for you at the town proper and take you back to your hotel or resort after.

If you want to make the most of your day, arrange a combined Tangadan Falls + Northern Tour (which includes a visit to Immuki Island in Bacnotan and stone attractions in Luna). Tours like this range from P1800 to P2000.

3. Pay the entrance fee at the Municipal Treasury Office.

The tricycle will drop you off around San Gabriel Municipal Hall. It’s located beside the Police Station at the junction.

Tangadan Falls Entrance Fee

Pay the environmental fee/entrance fee at the Municipal Treasury Office. The fee is P30 per person.

“No Receipt, No Entry” rule is in effect. You may be asked to present the official receipt when at the site.

4. Hire a tour guide.

Yes, it’s required. A “No Tour Guide, No Entry” is in effect. You’ll find the tour guide station beside the police station.

Tangadan Falls Tour Guide Station

The tour guide fee is P500 per group. We weren’t able to catch how many members are allowed per group. But we were a party of three and we were considered just one group.

5. Ride a habal-habal or jeepney to the trailhead.

Choose between a habal-habal (motorcycle) and a jeep.

  • Habal-habal roundtrip fare is P400 per pax and P600 for two pax. A unit can accommodate up to 2 passengers. If time is an issue or if you’re visiting early in the morning, this is the mode of transpo for you.
  • Jeepney fare is P120-150 per person, depending on the total number of passengers per trip. But it might wait for more passengers before departing. If you are a big group and you are planning to rent a jeepney, it costs about P1,800 — good for up to 15 pax.

The travel time is 20-30 minutes.

6. Trek to the waterfall.

Tangadan Falls Trek

It’s a 15-20 minute hike down a mostly concrete staircase to the waterfall. But it still depends on your pace.

NOTE: The road leading to the trailhead is narrow and winding, and some parts are steep. It’s quite challenging if you are not familiar with the road.

Tangadan Falls Swimming

  • Swimming. Take a dip into the cold freshwater of the Baroro River. If you are not a confident swimmer, you can rent a life vest or just swim in the shallow parts. The mossy rocks are very slippery, so be careful.
  • Cliff Diving. If you are feeling adventurous, go cliff jumping! Check the drop point if there are swimmers below before taking the plunge. Note that the original cliff jumping point is closed due to safety reasons, but you can still jump from the lower protruding rock near the falls.
  • Snap away. Take lots of photos. This picturesque natural gem, with the surrounding limestone cliffs, makes for a stunning photo backdrop.

What are the travel requirements for La Union?

You’ll need a NAPANAM QR Code, among other requirements. The full list of requirements depends on your vaccination status and the alert level of the area where you’re coming from.

To explain it better, we created a separate article with more details here: LA UNION TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS for TOURISTS 2022

When is the best time to go?

If you want to avoid big crowds, visit on a weekday. If you can’t help visiting on a weekend or holiday, try to be there early in the morning (like we did).

Are walk-in visitors allowed?

Is there a parking lot.

There is also a parking space at the trailhead. We’re just not sure if they allow private cars to drive all the way here.

Do we really need to hire a tour guide?

Also, don’t forget the official receipt (OR) issued by the Municipal Treasury Office.

Where to eat?

There’s a snack and souvenir stall at the trailhead’s parking area (where the habal-habal and “monster” jeepneys park).

Is it senior- and kid-friendly?

But perhaps not for seniors and definitely not for those with mobility problems. The trek back to the jump-off point entails ascending trails and a long flight of concrete steps. Although there are rest stops, it might still be challenging for small kids, seniors, and those with mobility issues.

TANGADAN FALLS

Landscape photography of Tangadan Falls - San Gabriel, La Union

La Union has become one of the tourist spots Filipinos love to visit because of its vicinity from the metro and the developments that cater to a chill and vibrant lifestyle. Bars, restaurants, cafes, and BNBs sprouted in the area one by one throughout the years. La Union has become known for surfing and lively parties. Aside from these activities, travelers can go to one of the numerous waterfalls in La Union called Tangadan Falls.

Its name is derived from the Ilocano word “Tangad” which means “to look up” or “Tingala” in Tagalog. Looking up is what you will really do upon seeing this amazing waterfall. It is 40 feet high and has a strong current flowing to the pool below. What’s more amazing about this waterfall is that it is a 2-tier waterfall.

The right side of Tangadan Falls

Going to Tangadan, we chose the adventurous trail instead of riding a habal-habal or jeepney that goes near the falls. The scenery there was breathtaking even if it was an hour’s walk, the heat of the sun and the tiredness didn’t matter. There is also a point on the trail where we have to cross the Baroro River. We crossed the river via a concrete path. As we made our step forward, the cool water passed through our legs and feet. It was very refreshing. The rural view there is very calming.

The view from the adventurous trail going to Tangadan Falls

2-TIER WATERFALL

ChaseJase at Tangadan Falls

We arrived at Tangadan Falls and I was very amazed by its marvel. Huge amounts of water fell into the plunge pool. Behind the waterfall is a small space wherein you can sit there and feel the rushing downward flow of water. Huge crowds started to come and we were told that there was also a pool above. We were surprised that there is another pool on top of Tangadan Falls filled by a small waterfall. The top plunge pool is small compared to the one below but it also has a lesser crowd. We spent our time swimming there. What made it more exciting was that there is a huge boulder on the side wherein you could jump into the pool. Life vests can be rented so we didn’t worry too much.

The view of the plunge pool of Tangadan Falls from the top

Visiting Tangadan Falls is the kind of travel that I seek. An adventure to a tourist spot surrounded by nature and also with a kick of adrenaline. If you also seek this kind of travel, don’t forget to visit Tangadan Falls whenever you come to La Union.

Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel, La Union, Philippines: A Complete Guide

Last Updated on October 6, 2022 by Tina

While La Union is known for surfing, there are other things you can do in the province if you are not into this type of activity. La Union has plenty of waterfalls that you can visit, with Tangadan Falls as the most popular.

Tangadan Falls is located in the municipality of San Gabriel, La Union. It is around a 45-minutes drive from Brgy. Urbiztondo in San Juan to the drop-off point to the waterfalls. I’ve always wanted to visit Tangadan Falls even before the pandemic but never had the chance. I was finally able to visit it last February, and I didn’t have to go alone.

What to Expect in Tangadan Falls

Tangadan Falls is a two-tiered waterfall with the lower cascade as the main attraction. It is around 40 feet high and its catch basin is around 20 feet deep. You can do cliff jumping here. My sister said there used to be a bamboo raft that you can hire if you want to go close to the waterfalls. When I asked our guide about it, he said it got washed out during Typhoon Maring.

The upper cascade

All the people I know who have been to Tangadan and even the blogs that I’ve read say that you need to hike for around 45 minutes to get there. When we went there on February 8, we only walked for around 15 minutes from the parking lot. Going down to the waterfalls from the parking lot was relatively easy, but going back to the parking lot is super tiring. That’s because you need to climb up the stairs. The walk is actually just around 600 meters, but the elevation gain is more than 100 meters.

How to Get to Tangadan Falls

By public transport

Go to Tanqui Transport terminal in San Fernando and board the jeepney to San Gabriel or you can hire a tricycle although hiring a tricycle is more expensive. Alight at San Gabriel Municipal Hall and pay for the Environmental Fee. After paying, hire one of the guides waiting outside the municipal hall.

By private transport

Navigate your way to Tangadan Falls using Google Maps. But don’t go there directly. As mentioned above, you need to pay for Environmental Fee at the Municipal Hall of San Gabriel. You will pass by it on your way to Tangadan Falls.

Just to share, we didn’t know this information when we went to Tangadan. We passed by the Municipal Hall already. Along the way, a guy on a motorcycle stopped us and told us that we have to pay the Environmental Fee first. Also, a guide is required when visiting the waterfalls. The guy who stopped us happens to be a guide. I asked him if it was okay if I just give him the money for the Environmental Fee and he’ll be the one to go to the Municipal Hall and that we will just wait for him. We didn’t want to drive back anymore. He agreed, and he said our vaccination card is also needed for the registration.

No tour guide, no entry

When he came back, he gave us the receipt and my vaccination card. Then we followed him. The road to the drop-off point to the waterfalls is paved, but there are parts that are steep, and the last 850 meters are very steep. The guide told my cousin that our car may not be able to go up but when my cousin checked the road, he said that it can. And so he drove down to the parking lot. This is the reason why we only had to walk for less than 15 minutes to the waterfalls.

tangadan falls trek

Environmental Fee- Php 30 (~US$ 0.60) per person

Guide Fee- Php 500 (~US$ 10) per group, maximum of 7 pax

Parking fee- Php 20 (~US$ 0.40) for motorcycles and Php 50 (~US$ 1) for cars/vans

Some Tips When You Visit Tangadan Falls

  • There is no signal/reception for Smart and Talk and Text beyond the Municipal Hall up to Tangadan Falls.
  • There are no ATMs nearby so make sure you bring enough cash.
  • We were able to drive up to the farthest part where a car could reach. But if you are not used to driving on steep roads, I advise that you park near the waiting shed instead and walk for around 30 to 40 minutes. Also, the guide said the road is slippery when wet so it is harder to drive when it is raining/just rained.
  • If you are visiting at midday, bring sunblock to avoid getting sunburned. Best if you use a reef-safe sunblock like Magwai .
  • There are shower rooms and toilets near the waterfalls. It is free to use but my cousin said that it is not clean. There are shower rooms in the store 400m away from the waterfalls that you can use for a fee. We haven’t checked it but it must be clean because there is a fee to use it.
  • Even if you are not going to swim, bring a towel/hand towel because you will be perspiring on your way back to the parking lot.
  • You can bring snacks or lunch if you are planning to stay long but please don’t leave trash there.
  • There are stores near the waterfalls that sell snacks.
  • Our guide said the waterfalls get crowded on weekends so if you can, schedule your visit on a weekday. Especially now that the pandemic is not yet over.

There are life vests that you can rent, but I was not able to ask how much it costs.

Hi! What’s the best time to go there? What time did you reach the falls?😊 Your blog is so helpful, we’ll go at Tangadan on May 22. I already talked to Kuya Roel 🙂

We arrived there 10:30am. We left San Juan I think 8:30 or 9am. But we didn’t pass by the municipal hall to pay for the envi fee so we had to wait for Kuya Roel and waiting took maybe 30mins. Best time would be in the morning I think. The earlier the better, because it might rain in the afternoon.

Hi, thanks again for sharing your experience! I liked the straight-to-the-point and natural writing style, that is every bit informative.

Wanted to share another contact for an accredited tour guide we met, his name is Juan Andaya -0924580424.

Note that there are un-accredited and probably bogus tour guides, around 5km away from the municipal hall. They have signages too, but they may overcharge unknowing tourists, P500 per pax). Go straight to the municipal hall to register and pay the required environmental fee (P30 per pax). You’ll meet accredited guides there who charges the standard fee of P500 per group of 7.

Hi Lira! Thanks for the info. Will edit this post to include the info you shared once I have better internet connection.

Hi! We visited Tangadan Falls pre pandemic and there were jeepneys for rent (going to the falls jump off) around the municipal hall. Are they still available now?

Hi. I am not sure but maybe they are available again because there are a lot of tourists here again.

Hi! Thanks for the informative post. We’re a group of five. Kaya ba ng sedan or SUV going to Tangadan? Thanks in advance!

Hi. Yes, up to a certain point. I think it will be safer to ask your guide when you get there. They will tell you up to what part your vehicle can reach.

OK. But is a tour guide really required/mandatory? Sayang kasi yung P500 hehe. We can just ask around or use Waze perhaps?

I am not sure if they already changed the rules. But when we were there last year, it is mandatory to get a guide.

Tangadan Falls: The Majestic Cascade of San Gabriel, La Union

Tangadan Falls

The archipelago of 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines is blessed with unparalleled natural wonders that truly beckon. Visayas is known for its beautiful beaches. Mindanao to some of the country’s majestic waterfalls. The Northern Luzon province of La Union , on the other hand, is home to both – beautiful beaches and majestic waterfalls such as Tangadan Falls .

Tangadan Falls

Situated in the town of San Gabriel, Tangadan Falls is one of at least ten waterfalls in the town. The waterfall is a two-tier cascade along Baroro River with cold water emanating from the hinterland of the province adjacent to the Cordillera Mountain Range.

Tangadan Falls

The lower cascade of Tangadan Falls is its main icon. Towering at around 50 feet and width of about 100 feet, it has a deep natural catch basin perfect for quick dip.

The upper level has a smaller drop but bigger and deeper pool ideal for cliff jumping. Further upstream is Kapandagan Falls, an offbeat yet equally majestic waterfalls that requires at least an hour more of trekking.

With the town of San Gabriel just 20-minute ride from the surfing town of San Juan, Tangadan Falls is a perfect side trip after surfing the waves of La Union. Entrance fee is just P30 per person.

How to Get to Tangadan Falls

From Manila, catch a La Union , Ilocos or Abra bound bus (Partas Bus, Dominion Transit, Viron Transit, First North Luzon Transit or Fariñas Transit). Get off at People’s Park in San Juan. Travel time is about six hours and fare ranges from P410-P450. At People’s Park, transfer to a jeepney to San Gabriel, fare is P15 and travel time is around 20 minutes.

Your Guide to Hiking in the Philippines

Tangadan Falls

Tangadan Falls Travel Guide

Introduction.

Tangadan Falls is a hidden gem located in Barangay Amontoc, San Gabriel, La Union. It provides a relaxing view and a thrilling cliff diving experience for the tourist and adventure seeker. Tangadan Falls has a height of 15 meters or 50 feet. Because of its majestic two-tier cascading waterfalls, the clear and cold water, it’s become one of the must-visit destinations in the Philippines.

Although the La Union province is popular for its beautiful beaches and is widely known as the surfing capital of the Northern Philippines, Tangadan Falls for the past years becomes a great destination for local travelers who want to experience its cold water. Also, it becomes a favorite attraction for swimming, cliff diving, and cliff jumping. There’s actually a 15 to 20 feet high rocky spot where tourists can do cliff diving.

Tangadan Falls came from the Tagalog word “Tangad” which means “looking up”. If you are a nature lover and adventurous person you don’t want to miss swimming and looking up in these gorgeous falls. However getting there is not a walk in the park, tourists must hike for thirty minutes to one hour to reach the falls. The trail going there is along the picturesque Baroro River.

San Gabriel is a municipality in La Union that is thirty-five minutes away from San Juan and is divided into 15 barangay. One of them is Barangay Amontoc where the falls are exactly located. Although Tangadan Falls is situated in a not-well-known town, the locals there are naturally kindhearted, and considerate. They could be somebody we could go around in case of help, emergency and something unfavorable happen.

Also, the cold water at the falls originating from the remote areas of the province juxtaposed to the Cordillera Mountain Range. The waterfall is a two-tier cascade. The lower cascade of Tangadan Falls is its main highlight. It has a width of about 100 feet. On the other hand, the upper level has a smaller drop but has a deeper pool excellent for cliff jumping. Today, Tangadan Falls is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines.

Tangadan Falls

My trip to Tangadan Falls

In the past few days, I was searching for a La Union day tour because I’ve never been to the province of La Union. So when I found out that there was a day tour going to Tangadan Falls, I immediately contacted the organizer named Dhaize and she gave me the itinerary and the costs of the event. As a result, I joined the organized tour without hesitation.

The La Union day tour costs 999 pesos. However, the day tour is on Wednesday, November 29 so I filed my vacation leave on that day, knowing that the next other day is a regular holiday (Bonifacio Day) which I can rest. I considered this trip as my end-of-the-year trip. I arrived at our meet-up place in Mcdo Greenfield District, EDSA Shaw Boulevard at 10:45 pm. There are 26 people in the group for this event.

The tour is composed of 2 private vans with 13 people for each van. For this reason, we have enough space to relax and to sleep in the van comfortably. When everyone in the group has already arrived at the assembly place, our van Toyota Hiace commuter heads to La Union at 11:10 pm. I sleep in the van for two hours. We have a stopover at Leeza’s restaurant in Sison, Pangasinan around 3 am.

I ordered egg and rice for my early breakfast and since I was a solo joiner I ate alone at the table. It was early morning when our van arrived at La Union after six hours of land travel. Then we register, paid the monster jeep ride fee, and have a briefing of the trail going to Tangadan Falls. Then we boarded the monster jeep at 5:30 am.

monster jeep

This is the first time that I will experience the jeepney top load ride. Therefore I positioned myself on the roof of the monster jeep. I was so excited. First, it was a smooth ride on a paved road passing the simple towns and municipalities of La Union. However, in the middle of the trip, the ride became a thrilling adventure. Our group went on the road less traveled. The dangerous road has ups and downs. The ride in the monster jeep became so swift on a cemented road.

group picture at monster jeep ride

We have to bend down to avoid the direct hit of branches of the tree and the cable wire. Also, we need to stay grip at the handle in order for us to stay at the top and never fall on the ride.

We were shouting, joking, and laughing at each other as the ride went on. Nevertheless, we feel the joy of the extreme top load monster jeep ride. Smiling faces and happy hearts I’ve seen throughout the whole ride. Also, the mountain scenery is beautiful  It was such an amazing experience. All I can say is wow. It was an epic and unforgettable ride.

Going to the falls is already an electrifying experience. Our monster jeep ride adventure to Tangadan Falls was really worth it. I thought this was one of the ordinary jeepney rides but hell no, to my surprise it is an extreme ride to the max but special thanks to our driver, he was really great at driving the monster jeep. Therefore, I salute him.

Tangadan Falls trail

Then we reached the jump-off point of Tangadan Falls. Our local tour guide said to us that we need to hike for thirty minutes going to the falls because it’s the only way to go there. We walk slowly in the cemented pathway passing some local houses and dogs. We noticed that the locals are informative and very friendly.

taking pictures

Then the trail descends a little bit. It becomes a lush green with great rice fields, towering trees, and mountain views along the way. It is amazing scenery as we go down. We feel the fresh air and start the river crossing. When our group hears the rushing cold water of the falls along the river, we walk fast towards the falls. After thirty-three minutes of walking through the green vegetation and river basin, we finally see the falls.

taking picture at Tangadan Falls

As soon as I arrived at the falls, all I could say was a good morning, God is great. Tangadan Falls is truly a majestic place created by God. To wonder and to witness it with my own two eyes is truly delightful. It’s a good thing that I joined this awesome trip to see this marvelous sight. It’s not crowded there because we go on weekdays. For this reason, I’m so very happy. I’ve never seen such gorgeous and stunning falls like this before. I feel like I’m in a paradise setting.

The water in the falls is fresh and crystal clear blue. Therefore, I’m totally speechless and I’m very impressed by what I saw. I stayed in one spot for a longer period of time to behold its full beauty. It’s higher than it looks in the photo. In my opinion, Tangadan Falls should be included in everyone’s travel bucket list. It is a paradise place hidden in La Union province. This fall has the charm to attract many local and international tourists. It is so beautiful. I thank God for this gift of nature. Indeed, there are a lot of beautiful places in the Philippines.

Tangadan Falls

To be honest, my pictures don’t do justice to the beauty of this place. Also, there’s an area for cliff diving. Other members of the group swim and take a dip in the falls while others just savor and take pictures of the majestic Tangadan Falls. On the other hand, I noticed that there are some stores nearby where I can buy some food and cold drinks, so I take my late breakfast.

After eating, I noticed too that there’s a restroom nearby free of charge. Also, I haven’t seen any single trash in the area which is truly amazing. The place is so clean and well maintained.

Tangadan Falls

We stayed at Tangadan Falls for two hours. We saw a lot of tourists coming from other countries. It was an enjoyable moment to be there. On the other hand, our group needed to go on another side trip to La Union. As a result, we left Tangadan Falls at 10 am. Our group hiked up to the cemented stairs and slopes going back to the jump-off point. In my opinion, this is the hardest part of our adventure. It was quite a hike, but the view and experience were all worth it.

Ma-Cho Temple

We wash up and then our van heads to our next destination which is Ma-Cho Temple. Our group explored the temple and stayed there for nearly one hour. Then at 12 am we arrived at Baluarte Watch Tower. We snap pictures and we have our group pictures there. The view there is so lovely even though the sun was already high at that time. We can see endless bluish seas that are so mesmerizing for our eyes.

view of the West Philippine Sea

Then at 1:30 pm, we arrived at San Juan Beach Resort. We take pictures again at the stunning beach and other members swim again while others just have a great talk in the cottages. We stayed at the cottage near the beach for almost an hour. I love being there just relaxing and not worrying about anything. It was a great bonding experience and I love to visit this beautiful beach again.

San Juan Beach Resort

Then we depart from the paradise beach and then at 4 pm we arrived in Halo-halo de Iloko restaurant in San Fernando City for our afternoon snack. We ordered french fries and halo-halo to satisfy our cravings. Even though the price was a little bit cozy, it was a rewarding afternoon snack. The food and drinks are so delicious.

Halo-halo de Iloko

Then at 5:30 pm, we arrived at Poro Point Lighthouse. We took lovely pictures of the sunset and we have our group pictures there beside the famous lighthouse. After that our van left Poro Point Lighthouse and headed back to Manila. Without a doubt, I had a great time in La Union.

We have our late dinner on the way back. After almost seven hours of land travel, we finally reached Manila. We just got back to Manila and to our home safely and soundly. The trip is worth it. I thank God for keeping us safe and for the wonderful experience. Indeed, La Union was an absolutely amazing province that has a lot to offer. Also, I thank Dhaize for organizing this day tour event and to everyone for being part of this enjoyable year-end trip.

So far, I considered Tangadan Falls as the second-best waterfalls I’ve ever seen in the Philippines, next to Kaparkan Falls in Abra. I wish I can visit these falls again.

On the whole, my adventure to Tangadan Falls sums up with this beautiful quote “No road is long with good company”.

How to Get to Tangadan Falls

  • From Cubao, ride a Partas bus going to La Union. Alight at People’s Park in San Juan, La Union. The approximate travel time is 6 to 7 hours.
  • From People’s Park, ride a jeep going to San Gabriel and drop off at the Municipal Hall.
  • Register and secure a local guide. After that ride a tricycle going to Tangadan Falls jump-off point. Then hike for twenty to thirty minutes towards the falls.
  • Ride a bus from Cubao bus station bound to Vigan. Then drop off at San Juan, La Union.
  • From San Juan, ride a jeep going to San Gabriel.
  • From San Gabriel, ride a tricycle going to Tangadan Falls jump-off point. Then walk your way towards the falls.

Reminders and Tips:

  • Looking for adventure then Tangadan Falls is good for you. If you want to go swimming in the falls, for your own safety you can rent a life vest for 50 pesos each.
  • Bring enough water and food if you want to lessen your expense. There are mini-stores beside the falls but a little bit pricey. Restrooms are available nearby with a minimal fee.
  • It’s better to go on weekdays so you can avoid the large crowd.
  • Bring comfortable sandals and slippers.
  • You can rent and ride a bamboo raft boat to the base of the waterfall to enjoy the refreshingly cool water and to get a water massage from the falls. The Tangadan Falls is approximately 25 to 35 feet deep. Also, there are cottages to rent beside the falls.
  • Follow the Leave No Trace principle. Clean as you go. Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints. Please dispose of your trash in an appropriate manner.
  • Be cautious of your step while in the river basin as the rocks are slippery.
  • If you’re a group coming in at the falls, you can bargain the fare for a monster jeep ride.
  • Before proceeding to Tangadan Falls, visitors are advised to register and coordinate from the Municipal Hall or local government for safety purposes.
  • The top-load monster jeep ride is an exciting and scary experience for visitors. The ride to the falls is an adventure already.
  • Avoid swimming and cliff jumping on the falls during the rainy season to avoid any accidents. The river crossing is hard because the water current is strong. Prevention is better than cure. Tangadan Falls is only a perfect place during the summertime. Also, the falls are closed during the wet season.
  • Tangadan Falls accident happen when a visitor from San Fernando City drowned while doing a cliff dive in the falls in the year 2017. According to the companions of the victim, they were on a hiking adventure at the waterfalls when he suddenly jumped from a cliff diving spot. Upon landing in the deep water, he was swept away by the strong current and drowned. His relatives try to save him but it didn’t work well. Rescuers from San Gabriel and San Juan spent a day searching for his body and late afternoon when his dead body was found out from the water.
  • Hire a local tour guide if you want to do a DIY (Do it yourself) for your own safety.
  • If you are planning to bring a private vehicle, just leave it near the Barangay as the road is too dangerous and steep for private vehicles. Then ride a tricycle or a jeep going to the falls.
  • Last but not least, I highly propose getting a packaged tour when you plan to visit Tangadan Falls for comfort and amenity. Included in the La Union day tour package is round trip van transfer from Manila to La Union and vice versa, tour coordinator fee, monster jeep ride, drivers fee and meal, toll fee, parking fee, local guide fee, cottage, entrance fee for a beach resort and Tangadan Falls. On the other hand, excluded in the package tour is an entrance fee for Thunderbird Resort, personal meals, and restroom fees.

Notable fees:

  • The tour guide fee going to the falls is 500 pesos good for 5 people.
  • The entrance fee in Tangadan Falls is 30 pesos.
  • A monster jeep ride cost 150 pesos per head.
  • Life vest or life jackets rental cost 50 pesos.
  • Habal-habal ride cost 150 pesos per head.
  • The cottage rent is 50 pesos.
  • The bamboo raft cost 25 pesos.
  • The environmental fee is 30 pesos.

HOW TO GET TO TANGADAN FALLS IN LA UNION

by thepinay solobackpacker | Mar 7, 2017 | La Union , Philippines , Travel Guide | 0 comments

Imagine being conveyed to a different place in a nick of time? One time you’re in Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan, dappled with tourists learning how to surf, next thing you know, you are hiking a jungle-clad trail and river crossing to Tangadan Falls in the neighboring town of San Gabriel.  It is a popular waterfall in La Union, a perfect side trip when visiting San Juan.  I’ve  included the directions here on how to get to Tangadan Falls, including the estimated budget to help you plan your itinerary on your next trip to La Union.

TRAVEL BLOG CONTENTS

la union tangadan falls cover (1 of 1)

To get to Tangadan Falls in La Union, from Manila, take a bus bound for La Union  like Partas (Cubao & Pasay), Farinas (Cubao), Viron (Cubao and Sampaloc), Dominion (Cubao) and Philippine Rabbit (EDSA Balintawak and Manila).  Fare is roughly PHP 400 / USD 7.94, travel time is about 5-7 hours.  You may also ride a bus bound for Vigan and Laoag.  Get off at San Fernando or San Juan (Urbiztondo Beach) and ride a jeepney bound for San Gabriel.   Jeepney fare is PHP 19 / USD 0.38, travel time is about 25 minutes.  Tell the driver you are going to Tangadan Falls so he can drop you off at the tricycle lane.  Take a tricycle to Tangadan Falls jumping-off point.  Minimum fare is PHP 50 (PHP 25 per person).

la union tangadan falls 22 (1 of 1)

Pay the PHP 30 / USD 0.30 per person Tangadan Falls entrance fee.  Hire a guide to Tangadan Falls, this trail will require river trekking in Baroro River.  Guide fee is PHP 500 / USD 9.92 (good for 1-6 persons).  Trek is about 1 hour, it’s an easy trek and you will see a smaller falls that is perfect for cliff jumping before the main attraction – Tangadan Falls.  I encountered some kids and elderly doing the trek, but I won’t encourage it as the river crossing is slippery.  The river here is sprinkled with gigantic rocks so it’s quite dangerous if they slip.  There are life jackets for rent at PHP 50 / USD 0.99 in case you want to cliff jump or swim.

LA UNION TANGADAN FALLS 3 (1 of 1)

If you have a private vehicle, you can alight at the trailhead to Tangadan Falls beyond San Gabriel where you need to trek to the waterfalls for roughly 20 minutes.   Pay the PHP 30 / USD 0.30  per person Tangadan Falls entrance fee.  Hire a guide, fee is PHP 500, good for 1-3 persons.

If you are traveling with some friends, 3-4 people.  You can hire a tricycle at San Juan, La Union (near the tricycle lane at Mad Monkeys) for PHP 500 to take you directly to Tangadan Falls trailhead.  But you still need to pay the PHP 30 / USD 0.30 Tangadan Falls entrance fee and the PHP 500 / USD 9.92 guide fee.

TANGADAN FALLS TRIP BUDGET

la union tangadan falls 20 (1 of 1)

Here’ a sample list of expenses, trip budget for Tangadan Falls in La Union.  I was traveling with my good friend Marcos so we shared the cost of guide fee and tricycle fare.

If you are traveling alone, estimated cost is PHP 618 / USD 12.26 , but if you have a travel buddy, prepare around PHP 368 / USD 7.30 per person as you will most likely share on the guide fee.  Will write a detailed itinerary and travel guide about La Union soon.

Tangadan Falls (San Gabriel, La Union)

tangadan falls trek

Tangadan Falls is a hidden gem in San Gabriel La Union.  It passes through a really scenic trail that gives you variety of views.  It brings you to the cold water falls that’s perfect for a good swim.

#taleofthetrail.

tangadan falls trek

I’ve spent so many summer months in La Union when I was a kid.  Seeing Tangadan Falls was a great chance to explore the place once again. It’s also be great to explore a trail in a different locale from my usual trail runs. The drop off point was Barangay Duplas, Bagulin, San Gabriel, La Union. San Gabriel town is just a few kilometers away from San Fernando and San Juan town so you can make your way their via bus that passes through the town and get a tricycle heading to Duplas (Tangadan Dropoff Point).

The Route and Elevation

tangadan falls trek

The Route starts at Barangay Duplas and heads to a short ascent heading to the trail starting point. The trails goes on a steady ascent heading to Tangadan Falls passing through the Biroro River over the first kilometer. After the river, it shifts to fields and Forrest trails heading to Disuor Cliff at around 2.5 kilometers. It then goes through a mix of dirt roads and limestone formation heading to Tangadan Falls at around 4 kilometers. The route goes back to Duplas on a net descent on the way back.

Trekking Trangadan Falls

tangadan falls trek

We started our hike after lunch at 1 pm. The weather was a bit overcast but it still felt hot and humid. We started on a short paved uphill road from the drop off point to the trail entrance.  The trail heads on a short drop to enter the river area.

tangadan falls trek

Upon entering the river area, the trail shifts to single track trails on mixed limestone formations and partly paved road. The view of the Baroro River is really impressive. The river looks so clean and the limestone formations were impressive.

tangadan falls trek

The trail is a bit structured since it’s a local trail used by a lot heading to the falls. Of course, there were still some tough spots like climbing on big rocks and going through wooden rafts and river crossings. It’s not a technical trail but there are some points that you just have to be cautious.  There were also a lot of tourist visiting the falls that day.

tangadan falls trek

The first kilometer had us navigating the Baroro River.  It’s an open trail so hello Mr. Sun.  The river crossings had some stones where you can step from to avoid getting wet or not going too deep. Just take your time as wet stones are slippery.

tangadan falls trek

The trails slowly shift to the fields where you get to navigate through dirt tracks while slowly ascending to the upper part of the trails.   The field part can give you a view of the mountains on the side and the river below.

The fields slowly shifted to raw Forrest trails. It’s a bit covered on this stretch. It was way cooler because of the natural shade from trees, plant and bamboo shafts. It had us going up and down on uneven surfaces and the varying terrain.

tangadan falls trek

It was about a kilometer and a half of Forrest trails before heading to the next major stop which is Disuor. It’s a cliff with a small falls and is popular among cliff jumpers. We took a break here to watch the brave souls jumping over the cliff and into the waters.

tangadan falls trek

The limestone formation, the water and the brave souls really made this stop a good one. It also had a serene view save for a few screams from the jumper. It can also be an excellent place to just hangout. Find a stone corner, sit and just pass the time.

tangadan falls trek

We continued heading to Tangadan Falls. It’s just about 15 – 20 minutes away from here. We shifted back to the dirt tracks and this time it had a long stretch of bamboo shoots and rafts enveloping the trails. One of the things I love about this trail is that it gives you different views and surfaces of the trail.

tangadan falls trek

After a stretch of dirt tracks, we then descended the rivers once again. From a Forrest view, we’re back to being awed by the beauty of the river and the rock formations.

tangadan falls trek

We had to go through another river crossings which had wooden rafts in between. We were nearing the falls and it was nice to see the limestone formation. It was also a challenge going over several stones and rocks as you’ll need to be strategic on this.

tangadan falls trek

The route had us headed to several cottages. The place was impressive as you had a huge limestone surrounding the lower part of the falls. There was a lot of awesome viewpoints of Tangadan falls.

tangadan falls trek

We then headed towards the lower part of the falls for a swim. It was nice that we brought along our own life jacket as Tangadan Falls was really deep. The waters at the basin of the falls were also really cold so it was a perfect way to cool down on this warm weather.  They were renting out rafts that can bring you under the waterfalls for an hour.

tangadan falls trek

It was really cool to be at the bottom of the falls as the strong waters hits you from above with its cold drops. I slowly got more comfortable moving within the raft and eventually in the falls. I got pushed of the raft and into the waters and that’s when I started enjoying the waters.  After getting more comfortable with the waters, I was finally able to jump into the falls and swim back to the shore part and back.

tangadan falls trek

I really enjoyed the falls. Tangadan Falls was definitely one of the better ways to cool down. It attracted a mix of locals and tourist who also came to find the hidden gem in Tangadan.

tangadan falls trek

I then saw some people jumping from the top of Tangadan Falls. I got curious on the view from the top so I followed the road up. It was another majestic view from the top as from one end you see the higher part of the Baroro River and then you get to see the basin below surrounded by the limestone formations around it. It also turns up that there’s another access point from the top that’s nearer to the falls.

tangadan falls trek

We then headed back to the start area and we were able to go back faster. It was net downhill and it was also much cooler in the late afternoon. I also just used my flipflops going back since I was lazy to put back my shoes on. That’s how friendly the trails are, you can navigate it even just wearing regular slippers or flipflops. It was a beautiful trail that gave you different views to appreciate and explore.

Why Tangadan Falls is a must see from San Juan

by Kathy | Jan 28, 2017 | Asia , Destinations , Luzon , Philippines | 22 comments

tangadan falls trek

As I stood on the edge of the cliff looking down the 20 foot drop in front of me, my guide at my side told me where to stand. I stepped off the cliff top and plunged into the water, adrenaline seeped through my body as I hit the water. This was my experience in Tangadan Falls in the Philippines.

I am 40 minutes into my hike to the Tangadan Falls in the Philippines and this is the main cliff jumping spot. The most exciting part of the hike although it all was lovely.

Our day started in San Juan where we got a tricycle to San Gabriel the start of the trail. We managed to get the smallest, most broken down looking tricycle in the whole of San Juan; however it did get us safely to the start of the trek to Tangadan Falls. The ride took approx 45mins.

Tangadan Falls

We met Samuel, our guide for the hike, at the start of the trek. The guides wait here for tourists. I was told prior to going that you had to have a guide.  I would recommend one (see why in tips) but I doubt it is absolutely necessary.

Tangadan Falls

We hiked down a track, past fields of rice and other crops. A few buffalos lifted their heads to watch us as the morning clouds lifted in the valley. Silence lingered in the air.

Tangadan Falls

Soon enough, we got to the Baroro River which we followed up along its winding path with spectacular scenery around every turn. At two places we had to remove our shoes to walk through the water but with appropriately placed sitting rocks around to put your shoes on and off , this wasn’t a problem.

Tangadan Falls

It was 40 minutes before we reached the jump off points. Here there is an option to just swim, take the plunge at the 5, 10 and 20 foot cliff jumps or just to sit and soak up the atmosphere. The guide is important here to tell you where to jump and if it is safe to do so due to the amount of water in the river. I did the 10 and 20 foot jumps which were great fun. Lifejackets are also available to rent here for those who are not confident swimmers.

We soon dried off as we continued our hike through towering trees and limestone formations for another 20 mins to Tangadan Falls. Here you can buy snacks, sit in the shade and swim in the plunge pool.

Tangadan Falls are really scenic with a beautiful backdrop of the forest and mountains behind. The water was a little less clear than what I had seen on photos but it had rained heavily overnight.

Tangadan Falls

We had great fun swimming in the plunge pool, jumping off the rafts there and having a natural massage from the falls. A really pleasant way to spend a few hours on a lovely day.

Tangadan Falls

The hike back saw us stopping again at the cliff jumping stop to get a few last jumps in. It was a little busier here at this point so we soon headed back to our awaiting tricycle.

In no time at all we were back in San Juan after having to practically push our tricycle up a hill, leaving us with plenty of time to get a few hours of surfing in before the sunset. The next day I was nursing a few bruises from being bashed around in the tricycle so perhaps check the condition of the tricycle before hiring it.

What is your favourite waterfall trek? Have you been cliff jumping before? Please comment below especially if you’ve been to Tangadan Falls. Don’t forget to subscribe (It’s free!) to my blog for more  posts like this and interesting travel tips.

Tips when visiting tangadan falls.

1/ We looked at a few different options to get to Tangadan Falls. Hiring a Scooter is not particularly cost effective. The Scooter rental is out of the city and the cost of hiring and fuel would be more than the cost of the tricycle. Also the roads are not in the best condition.

2/ We paid P.500 between two for the Tricycle to Tangadan Falls. It’s normally approx P.600 however the discount may be due to the size of the tiny tricycle or because business might have been slow that morning due to the overnight rain.

3/ Why a guide? We were told you had to have a guide to go Tangadan Falls but this is not the case. However I would recommend you have a guide if you do not have a proper hiking map which shows the trail or if you want to go cliff jumping. The guide is important as he has years of experience knowing when and where it is safe to go cliff jumping. A slight mistake on your part could cost you your life or change your life forever. The cost of the guide was P500 between two people. For larger groups you would most likely get a better deal.

4/ It costs P30 to enter the area around Tangadan Falls for maintenance of the area.

5/ I wore hiking boots as it had rained heavily the night before but when it is dry, flip-flops and sandals may be best due to the river crossings.

6/ Don’t forget water, sunscreen and snacks although there are a few places to buy water and snacks along the way to Tangadan Falls and at the falls itself.

7/ It costs P20 to hire the bamboo raft to go under Tangadan Falls to get that natural massage.

8/ Looking for somewhere to stay. Check out Natures Healing Home near San Fernando who can arrange transport to and from the falls:

Lastly enjoy.

Hi Kathy, I have been hearing a lot about you here at Nature’s Healing Home. We just missed each other as I started volunteering here about a week ago. Having a blast and am reading your blog to find out where to go next. The falls look amazing – maybe this weekend! Echo is doing great, by the way. He is so playful. Here’s my blog: tflanagan.us/yearabroad. Posts coming soon about San Fernando.

Kathy

Hey Tim! So sad that we missed each other. I am so glad that Echo is doing well (for people reading this comment check out: http://walkaboutwanderer.com/why-i-stopped-travelling/ to find out who Echo is). I miss him so much. Make sure you do the cliff jump. It was so much fun. I hope that you will be taking a trip to Sagada and Banuae too. I have a guide to how to walk the rice terraces of Batad without a guide which might interest you 🙂

Isabel

After being pushed to the depths of a bungee in South Africa and taking over a good half hour to take the plunge into rockpools building up an audience in the meantime in the outback I can finally admit I don’t think adrenaline pumped activities are for me, no matter how hard I try. The massaging raft sounds delightful. Being one for solo travelling too however I do challenge myself to sometimes break free from this thinking in poorer countries and and support the locals. ‘Give to live’. Thinking a guide not a tour and using the opportunity to integrate with them making a richer experience.

There are smaller jums to do which might be perfect for you. I like supporting locals too. It is a great way to get to know the locals. Other ways are to volunteer. I had a lovely time in South Korea with a great friend recently where we volunteered making ribbons to remember those who lost their lives in the ferry disaster. We met so many lovely people.

Alex

I’m not to sure, but I think that you can even jump of the top of the waterfall. I saw it in a video. I guess it’s even higher when 20 ft. I would probably ask the guide before I would do it.

The current was pretty strong though. I’m not sure how safe that would be :-/

Katie

Just look at that waterfall! It is incredible!!!!! thank you so much for this guide – so helpful 🙂

Sounds of La Union: The Trek to Tangadan Falls

tangadan falls trek

My heart drums in my chest, each beat thundering a little louder than the last as the bike we are riding scoots around the highlands of San Gabriel. Now and then, it squeaks under our weight. More often, it whirs and purrs as it zips along the sloping terrains. The vehicle is not what you would categorize as a big bike; rather, it’s a slim motorcycle called habal habal that the tour guides back at the San Gabriel Municipal Hall claimed can seat two to three people. We are a group of three travelers—my girlfriend, my sister, and I—looking to visit the famed Tangadan Falls, and hiring a habal habal would cut down the trek time by 30 to 45 minutes. We decided to split up and hire two bikes with two tour guides. It didn’t seem crazy initially; that is, until we saw the terrain that lay ahead. The road rolls up and down before us and slithers through the forests of the mountain like a snake. When the road curves to a sharp turn, our driver blasts a honk reminiscent of the war horn the Black Brothers used in the Game of Thrones . This, of course, is to warn any vehicle ahead of oncoming riders. The rest of the ride is quite the view. Sometimes, bamboo houses and lush mountainsides stand erect on either side of the road. Other times, there’s nothing next to us but the sky ahead and a cascade of trees some fifteen to thirty feet below. It’s this nothingness that fills my head with paranoia. I am very good at paranoia, and the last time I braved a mountain (that isn’t on a bus bound for Baguio) was when I hiked as part of a camping class back in college. I remember thinking, this would be a terribly early way to die. Now, the only thing that distracts me from these thoughts is the roar of the wind in my ears. I start to get lost in the sensation of it—until we approach a sharp downward slope. The engine begins to drone steadily and I clutch on tight for balance. If you haven’t been to Tangadan Falls, you may (or may not) appreciate this little spoiler: the nearing end of the 20-minute ride is marked by a series of downward slopes and a rise in your heart rate. Some of the slopes are so steep, you’d think you signed up for a roller coaster ride. Sometimes I lose my balance, and when that happens, my butt thumps against the seat and a nervous laugh escapes from my mouth. My sister, who is seated in front of me, chuckles after; we have been trying to shut our mouths for the entire ride, partly determined not to show anxiety and partly immersed in the rush of it all. But by the end, we give in and giggle when the bike hurtles downwards. The engine slows down to a rumble as we near a small ground resembling a parking lot. I jump off of the bike. Nearby, coins rattle in the small stores selling boiled eggs, chips, bottled water and candies. Our main tour guide—I have lost his name in the quick exchanges of introduction back in the town proper—looks back at us. “Lalakarin na po natin mula dito.” He starts to lead us into a grove of trees, down a rocky path. The ground is a patchwork of large, smooth-surfaced rocks and an array of pebbles. But the path is relatively steep. Sometimes, I’m not sure if the crunch I am hearing is from the ground or from my knees. Along the way, I get wind of the sound of rushing water. Now, I’m the type of person who can’t make out what my girlfriend says even when she stands two feet next to me and has repeated the phrase three times, but the sound of roaring waterfalls was unmistakable amidst the soft whistle of the breeze through the trees. I quickly turn to my girlfriend and my sister. “Malapit na ba tayo?” As if they would know. My girlfriend is the one to answer. “Malapit na ba? Malayo pa ‘ata eh.” We fall back to silence, save for the whoops that I mutter as I make my way down the rocky path. Our tour guide looks back at us. “Malapit na po tayo!” “Kuya, mga ten minutes pa?” I ask. “Mga ganun po, pero sa ganyang bagal mga ten hours pa!” He hoots. We all cackle. Finally, the rocky path reassembles itself into a man-built stairway, and I knew we have arrived. Our tour guide tells us that this was the famous “200 steps,” which we all climb with relief. The cacophony of pounding waterfalls and clamoring tourists grows louder with each step.

tangadan falls trek

These are natural light leaks!

The Tangadan Falls is as majestic as it looks in pictures. The sun peeks from behind the trees above the falls, and if one squints one’s eyes just right, one can make out the small hint of a rainbow by the cascade of waters. I would say that it looks as accurate as an Instagram snap of it, but taking a dip in the basin at the bottom is an experience that can never be caught on camera. The water is pleasantly cool and light, it’s almost tempting to drift off to slumber right there. We decide to get back on the ground when more tourists start to pour in, perhaps after a 30-minute dip. The trek back up is so much easier, but also, more crowded. The 200-step stairway is now divided into lines of people departing and people arriving. The two lines are so close, people brush each other’s shoulders. Some of the seniors have plopped down on rocks for a quick break, thus halting the line. “Pasensya na kayo,” they offer, but the rest of us wave their apologies away, letting them take all the time they need. Warm chit-chat begins to fill the atmosphere, mostly among the resting seniors who make jokes in between gasps for air. They don’t know each other, but they’re on the same narrow path and have all come from the same tiring hike. We reach the parking lot in a matter of minutes. The ride back feels like something that I’ve done a hundred times before: wind snapping at my hair, horns blasting ahead, and the motor whirring beneath us. It is a tune that I would have loved to play back for hours, but quick as a heartbeat, the journey fades into the dull, flat sounds of the town. All good (and wild) songs come to an end, I suppose. But it’s nice to know that I can always go back to San Gabriel for an encore.

Tangadan Falls In San Gabriel, La Union: Rock Formations Up To 50 Feet High You Can Cliff Jump From

tangadan falls trek

Cliff jumping from 50-feet-high rock formations

The province of La Union is famous for its beaches, but there is so much more to the place than San Juan’s resort strip. To discover La Union’s natural wonders, try going off the beaten path. For adventure seekers, Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel, La Union is the perfect place to go.

Most tourists who come here are content with jumping from one of the 20-foot rock formations – no easy feat – or the much lower jumping spots around the waterfalls. However, experienced adventurers can tackle the highest point you can jump from here, at 50 feet.

Going to San Gabriel, La Union

Tangadan Falls - tricycle ride to San Gabriel

Because it is in the mountains of a rural town, there aren’t too many tourists that go to Tangadan Falls.

From the municipal hall of San Juan, La Union or any point along the National Highway in San Juan, you can ride a jeepney for P20 (~USD0.40) or a tricycle for P50 (~USD1) to San Gabriel. If you tell the driver that you’re going to Tangadan Falls, they will drop you off in an area where there are habal-habal or motorcycle taxis.

Getting to Tangadan Falls

Tangadan Falls - trek down to the falls

You can get to the attraction in 2 ways. The easiest and fastest option is a 30-minute habal-habal ride that will cost you P250 (~USD5.02) per motorbike. After this, you’ll still need to trek downhill for 10 minutes to the falls itself.

You can also opt to trek to Tangadan Falls for an hour to an hour and a half. For first-timers, hiring a tour guide is advised. Getting a guide usually costs P500 (~USD10.05) for a group of five. The trail is along the scenic Baroro River, so it’ll surely be worth your time and effort.

A thrilling experience for P30

Tangadan Falls - raft boat

Once you get to Tangadan Falls, everything should be a breeze. The entrance fee costs P30 (~USD0.60) per person. You can also rent a life vest for P50 (~USD1.00) each so you can cliff jump and swim safely.

Besides cliff-diving and swimming, you can ride a raft and get as close as you can to the foot of the falls. With the help of a guide, you can also climb the rock formations and find water reservoirs between the rocks that can act as your private pool.

Other sights besides Tangadan Falls

If you’re considering going to La Union, don’t be afraid to go beyond the usual vacation spots. The town of San Gabriel alone has plenty of other waterfalls so you can go waterfall-hopping. The best time to visit these falls is between November and April.

It may take a bit more time and effort to go off the beaten path, but the experiences you get and the sights you see are always worth it. Remember to put your safety first, though, and leave things like 50-feet plunges to the pros.

Things to do

Things to do | hike of the week: take a swim in the inviting backcountry pools at three sisters falls, the moderately challenging hike leads to three waterfalls at three sisters falls in the cleveland national forest.

Visitors enjoy the waterfalls and swimming pools at Three Sisters Falls.

Located in the Cleveland National Forest — west of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park — the roughly 4-mile out-and-back trek to the three waterfalls and their surrounding pools is one of the most popular hikes in the area. It’s not difficult to see why; the trail to the water follows a moderately challenging route that offers a great workout, while the waterfalls themselves make for a picturesque destination.

Perhaps most importantly, though, hikers can go for a swim, which is what drew me to this hike on a warm June morning.

The trail to Three Sister Falls and its trailhead have undergone major developments in recent years, including changes to the route to make it less strenuous.

In late May, Forest Service officials also announced a new name for the trailhead, Cha’chaany Hamuk, which translates roughly to “three sisters” in the Kumeyaay language. Plus, there is a new parking lot, restrooms and a helicopter landing area for fire and rescue crews.

Despite updates to the trail that make it more user-friendly, the hike to Three Sisters Falls can still be dangerous, especially in extremely hot weather conditions. It is nearly entirely exposed, so hikers should wear sun protection and bring at least half a liter of water per hour of moderate hiking.

To begin, park in the parking lot on Cedar Creek Road, located off Boulder Creek Road. The trailhead is located on the western side of the lot and marked with a sign.

The trail heads west along a mostly flat path before it begins to descend down the hillside. After about half a mile, hikers will reach a sign pointing to the waterfalls. Follow this as it heads south.

Around the 1-mile mark, hikers will navigate a small stream crossing before passing under a shaded section of the trail — a temporary yet welcome relief from the sun. Keep an eye out for poison oak, which lines parts of the trail here.

After hiking for about 1.5 miles, hikers will be able to see the Three Sisters Falls in the distance.

The trail gets a bit steeper closer to the water and hikers will need to step over bigger rocks, so use caution. Once at the water — at the 2-mile mark — the rock becomes slicker. Hikers will need to carefully walk to the pools and should assess their own ability before climbing too far up or down.

The pools can be crowded, especially on weekends, but I found a nice shaded place to set my backpack and boots before hopping in the water. It was, by my standards, freezing, yet invigorating. After my swim, I dried off quickly with the heat of the sun.

When you’re ready to leave, make your way back up the trail. This is where it gets more difficult as it’s a gradual climb to the top in direct sunlight, so take breaks as needed and keep drinking water.
