About Sunway Safaris

WELCOME TO SUNWAY SAFARIS   Looking for a quality small group safari vacation in Southern Africa at an affordable price, with knowledgeable guides and like minded travellers? Sunway has been creating memories for adventurous Africa travellers for more than 20 years. We specialise in value for money small group camping safaris and accommodated tours that include wildlife safaris, walking and trekking holidays, cultural tours, safari holidays and overland journeys. Please visit our African Destinations page for more information on the different countries we visit. You can book one of our regular, scheduled Southern African safari vacation packages as a couple, a family, friends or solo as a single traveller. Alternatively we can arrange a private group tour to suit your requirements.

Questions & Answers

What food can i expect while on safari.

Sunway will provide three scrumptious meals per day, unless specified in the itinerary [B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner], from lunch on the day of departure until breakfast on the last day of your tour. Good healthy meals make happy travelers. The tour leaders do all the shopping and meal planning for each group. He/she will always try to obtain fresh produce wherever possible. Each tour has 1 cool box / freezer for the meats and fresh produce only, and 1 cool box for drinks. We do cater for special dietary requirements. Please bring this to our attention at time of booking. A rough idea of what meals can be expected: Breakfast - Cereals and milk or bread/toast, jam and fruit with coffee and tea or the occasional cooked breakfast. Lunch - Cheese, cold meats, fish, fruit, pasta salads and bread or rolls. Dinner - Potjies (stews), braais (barbecue), stir fries, curries etc prepared on a wood fire or gas stove. On several nights we visit local restaurants, which because of individual tastes will be an own expense meal.

Do I need malaria tablets?

Yes, Malaria prophylaxes are required on all of the safaris that we offer. Some trips, like the South Africa Scenic or Rainbow Route, are only in a Malaria area for 5 days, while others, such as the Zambia, Malawi & Mozambique Trade Route, travel through malaria areas for all 21 days. Your tour leader will advise you when you enter a malaria area, and when you exit a malaria area. Do not be put off visiting Southern Africa because of malaria. Realistically most of Southern Africa is low risk area and if you use prophylaxis, use insect repellent and cover up at dusk with long shirt or trousers, the chances are very low that you would contract malaria. Of the thousands of clients that Sunway has carried since 1994 we know of only 1 case of a client contracting malaria, and only a handful of guides (and remember that the guides do not even use the tablets). Clients visiting Malawi and Mozambique should pay most attention to precautions as those two countries are warm and wetter, and therefore have higher incidence of malaria. Please contact your local physician for latest information on malaria prophylaxis and what type of prophylaxis will be best suited for the area that you are visiting. If you feel when you get home that you have flu like symptoms, headache, stiffness, nausea, fever, then it’s best to consult your doctor immediately. Remember that prophylaxis do mask the symptoms, so get checked out – and remember to tell your doctor that you’ve been to a malaria area. Malaria is easily treatable if detected early.

Are mosquito nets provided?

If you are joining a camping trip, the Sunway tents have mosquito netting on the windows and door. Mosquitoes spend the heat of the day in shaded areas, so please remember to keep the mosquito net on the door closed during the day too, so that mosquitoes do not enter your tent. At night, you can sleep with the tent window flaps open, and the door rolled up, but remember to keep the mosquito net zipped closed. This will keep out the little biting things (like mosquitos) and the big biting things (like lion and hyena Smile). On the accommodated safaris, if we visit a malaria area, or a place with mosquitoes, then the accommodation will have nets provided. In areas where there are low numbers of mosquitoes and/or no malaria, mosquito nets will not be provided. These include places such as Knysna, Hermanus, Cape Town, Swakopmund, Windhoek etc.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag and a towel?

If you are joining a camping trip, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag (and small camp pillow) and a towel. Should you not have, or do not want to buy a sleeping bag, you can rent a sleeping bag and camp pillow from the Sunway office for Euro 1 per sleeping bag per day on tour. Please book this at the time of booking. On the accommodated safaris, all bedding is provided, and you will not be required to bring a sleeping bag or pillow. When we do stay in areas where sleeping bags are required (such as the tented camp in the Okavango Delta) sleeping bags and pillows will be provided. At most accommodation establishments, towels will be provided, but it is always a good idea to bring a small travel towel for the beach or swimming pool.

Are there luggage restrictions?

Due to space and weight limitations within each safari vehicle, luggage should be kept to a maximum of 12kgs per person (excluding camera equipment / day bag). The bag should be of a soft sided duffel bag / back pack design – no hard cases or hard sided bags will be accepted. While many people feel that they will need their full quota of 20kgs, people quickly realise that they have packed far too much.

Can I use a credit card while on Safari?

Yes, Mastercard and Visa credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Southern Africa. American Express is not widely used in Southern Africa. You’ll be able to use credit card to pay for most restaurant meals, and at most formal shops (although there may be a time delay in the check out queue.) Optional activities in Cape Town, Swakopmund, Maun and Livingstone can also be paid by credit card. More specific details available in the downloadable Sunway general information dossier.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

Yes, all clients travelling on a Sunway safari are required to have their own comprehensive travel insurance. The travel insurances needs to cover lost luggage, missed flights and most importantly comprehensive medical cover in the un-likely event of you being injured while on safari. Please note that while most credit card companies offer travel insurance if you have bought your airline ticket on your credit card, we have found that cover is not sufficient for adventure travel in Africa. We strongly recommend you buy additional specific travel insurance. You need to buy this insurance in your home country, before you travel and your local Sunway travel agent can assist you with this.

What is the age limit?

The minimum age for our guests is 12 years old, although we do occasionally make exceptions depending on the specific itinerary, the group make-up and sometimes during our low season. Please note that a child of 12-17 years will only be accepted for travel with an accompanying adult. On some of our safaris we camp wild in remote areas and these campsites are not fenced, so it is possible for wild animals do enter the campsite. It is important that parents make sure that the children listen and follow the guide’s safety instructions. Parents are also required to supervise their children at all times so as not to affect the enjoyment of the tour for any other clients. We, as Sunway, do not believe that age should be a determining factor on the enjoyment of life! Therefore we do not have an upper age limit. But clients who are older than 65yrs are required to submit a doctor’s report stating that they are fit and healthy and that they will be able to undertake a safari that includes a moderate level of physical activity, some long driving days and some moderate day walks. This is not an onerus document, but rather an indication that the client is aware of the style of tour that they will be joining, and capable of participating in all activities on tour. We've found that we have many fit and healthy clients who are over 65 years of age, join Sunway trips, and put the younger clients to shame on the mountain walks!

In this 21-day trip, we've lassoed all the highlights of Namibia and Botswana together, from Namibia's famous Sossusvlei dunes to Botswana's epic game reserves. Soak up Victoria Falls before crossing into arid Namibia's Etosha National Park. Climb the Namib Desert dunes, then bush walk in Botswana with the San bushman. Dug-out canoes take you deep into the Okavango Delta, and a cruise caps things off in Chobe National Park

Day 1 - 2 LIVINGSTONE  [chalet Bx1--] [B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner] Tour departure meeting at 14:00pm. Victoria Falls is one of the natural wonders of the world and we take 2 days to explore this area. Adventure activities abound, including sunset cruises, white water rafting on the mighty Zambezi, or an 111m bungi jump (own expense).

Day 3 – 4 CAPRIVI  [chalets BLD] Crossing out of Zambia into the Caprivi strip, we spend two days travelling west through this game rich area. We’ll explore the Kwando River by boat and a game drive into the Mahango Game Reserve.

Day 5 RUNDU  [chalet BL-] After a morning enjoying the abundant birdlife that surrounds the camp, our road takes us along the Kavango River. Villages of grass huts and local wooden crafts and carvings a common sight. We stop for the night at our riverside lodge in Rundu and enjoy a spectacular sunset.

Day 6 - 8 ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK  [lodge BLD] We head deeper into Namibia to the Etosha National Park. The National Park surrounds the Etosha Pan, and is locally named “the great white place of dry water”. Waterholes surround the pan and attract game, Etosha is known for great sightings of elephant, antelope and lions. Our lodge lies on the boundary of the park and we spend our mornings and afternoons on game drives.

Day 9 BRANDBERG  [lodge BLD] Our journey covers some beautiful desert landscapes as we move south towards the Brandberg Mountain. German colonial influences are strong in the town of Swakopmund as reflected in the restaurant menus and the architecture.

Day 12 – 13 NAMIB DESERT  [permanent tent BLD] The lunar landscapes surround the town of Swakopmund and we visit these as we leave and head into the Namib Desert with its towering red sand dunes. We will walk to Sossusvlei, explore Sesriem Canyon and from the comfort of our lodge outside the national park watch a dramatic sunset over the desert.

sunways safaris

This tour departs at 14:00 from the lodge in Livingstone, Zambia. Most flights into LVI (and VFA) arrive midday. We recommend that you fly into Livingstone airport (LVI) in Zambia on the day the tour starts. Flying into Victoria Falls airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe will require an additional visa (the Uni-visa applies for most nationals from the EU).

The tour ends in Livingstone, Zambia at approximately 12:00 (noon) and we do a free of charge drop off at the Livingstone airport (LVI) so that you can arrange flights for the same day. Alternatively, you could fly out of Kasane Airport (BBK), Botswana. We can arrange a airport transfer at normal airport transfer rate. (If you are flying out of Victoria Falls VFA, Zimbabwe, we can arrange an airport transfer directly from Kasane to VFA, Zimbabwe - which would save you crossing into Zambia and then into Zimbabwe just to get to the VFA airport. This would be at the normal airport transfer rate.)

If you would like to book any pre-tour or post-tour accommodation, please indicate your required airport transfers and the number of nights required when you submit your enquiry below.

  • Responsible Tourism

The sausage tree is the traditional tree cut down to make the mokoro (dugouts) used in the Okavango Delta. But sadly these trees are disappearing from the region. Sunway has set up a project to encourage polers in the local community polers to buy fiberglass replica mokoros. These mokoros have a longer lifespan are more stable and are made with no effect on the environment.

Sponsorship for each mokoro is needed. This is something that is close to all of our hearts and we hope that it will be successful. If you would like to contribute, please talk to your guide

We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children).

If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc)

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT NAMIBIA

The Namib desert landscapes form a magnificent backdrop for a spectacular safari. Lying on the Tropic of Capricorn, and flanked by the cold Atlantic Ocean, Namibia has a desert climate for the most part and there can be large differences in day and night temperatures, low rainfall and overall low humidity.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BOTSWANA

In combination with Namibia, the Southern Circle safari visits neighbouring Botswana. This particularly flat country is land locked in central Southern Africa and shares a similar climate with Namibia, although slightly more rain and is technically semi-arid desert climate. In combination the follow applies:

June :– The nights are colder and can drop below 10°C/50°F. In desert areas, it can be freezing. Days are still pleasant around 20-24°C/68-75°F with clear blue skies.

July & August :– Winter morning game drives can be cold at an average minimum of 7°C/45°F, so dress in layers with a windproof jacket and beanie. The average daily temperature reaches 21-25°C/70-77°F but can fall to below freezing at night in the deserts and higher altitude areas.

September & October :– Spring is lovely. It isn't too hot, but the mornings are less chilly. The skies are clear and during October the green vegetation is fading as the heat builds up. October can be extremely hot.

Green season is from November to April : Photography is amazing at this time, with wonderful light,  dramatic lightning, and thunders storm cloud formations. Wildlife revels in the bounty of summer and life is good.

November :– By now it is hot, but with the humidity still low, it is pleasant. On average, the days are above 30°C/86°F, but it can be a lot higher in the desert.

December :– The first rains arrive and the temperature drops. The landscape changes after the first rains and everything comes to life. For the lucky you might experience the rare phenomenon of rain in the Namib Desert.

January & February :– Tends to be hot and humid with temperatures around 30-35°C/86-95°F and over 40°C/104°F in the desert. There may be downpours in the afternoon but not every day. Mornings are usually clear.

March & April :– Rainfall stops around April. It cools down and the nights start to get cold. Average day temperatures are around 25-30°C/77-86°F.

Dave & Chris - Sep22

We have just about recovered from our trip and we can honestly say it was absolutely everything we wanted it to be and more! Everything went very smoothly, Sunway Safaris could not be faulted and we have come away with some amazing memories and some new friends from all over Europe (not to mention nearly 3000 photographs!)

Ruth Law - 13Oct19

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? There was something special nearly every day, but for me the most thrilling experience was lying in the tent at night when we were camping in the Okavango Delta listening to elephants feeding round the campsite. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Be aware that this trip covers huge distances, so some days involve a lot of travelling. Also, don't underestimate the heat (40C plus). 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? Yes - I felt that Sunway Safaris made an effort to do the right thing. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? This was one of the best holidays I've been on. It was extremely well organised - not what I'd experienced elsewhere in Africa - and the guides were first-rate. They really went the extra mile to make sure that everybody had a good time. 5 *****

Anthony Stringer - 13Oct19

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? Every day was another adventure. We loved seeing all of the animals and birds and the landscapes were spectacular. Some of the places that we stayed at were fantastic, the tree house and desert venues were amazing. Taking the canoes through the Okavanga Delta was magical and camping in the wild with elephants visiting during the night to eat the surrounding trees and bushes was an experience never to be forgotten. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Read the itinerary carefully. We took the recommended amount of clothing and it really is all that you need. It can get really hot in the safari truck in the afternoon, the aircon worked fine in the morning but windows needed to be open during the afternoon heat. The roads vary in condition, some are good tarmac, some with huge potholes, some just dirt roads and some sand roads. You will be spending 21 days with a group of people you have not met before, be prepared to compromise. Set the ground rules early about where you will sit in the bus, we did a clockwise rotation so everyone sat in a different set of seats each day, saves arguments. Be prepared to help out with food preperation and clearing up, many hands make light work. Some days are very very long and hot, covering many many miles. Drink loads of water. Take snacks on the bus. 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? Definately, our guides were incredibly informative of the country, people, animals and we all learnt a huge amount about the way people and animals lived in the different countries we visited. They were welcomed wherever we went and had obviously built up a huge amount of respect and friendship with the different people we met. They were very respectful of the different tribes and their cultures and explained everything to us before we met people. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? We had a wonderful African Adventure and would give it 10/10 and more! Our guides Maxwell and Bryan were amazing and really made our holiday a fantastic experience. Every evening they advised us what we would be doing the next day. Their knowledge of the animals, birds, cultures, countries, history and more was fantastic. They were always the first up and the last to go to bed. They provided good, fresh and healthy meals. We felt completely safe every hour of the trip with them. Maxwell was an amazing driver and navigated the difficult roads in an expert and safe way. The places we visited and the people we met will remain in our memories forever. A wonderful experience. 5 *****

Chris Edwards - 13Oct19

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? It was not a holiday it was an adventure 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Remember Africa is not for sissies 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? It deffinitely puts first world problems into perspective and raised awareness 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? Fantastic. 5 *****

Jane McLaughlin - 06Oct19

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? Every part! The Victoria Falls (though they were dry on the Zambian side) . Staying in a lodge on the Zambezi river , the Etosha National Park, The Namib desert, camping in the Okavango Delta. Seeing the big African animals and birds in their natural environment. The guides were great, and the practical organisation for the most part went as planned. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Read the information on the Sunway safari website carefully. It is detailed, but spell out clearly that this is a long journey, (approx 3000 miles travelled). Some of the days in the truck are long and hot, so be prepared. Also be prepared to help out with preparing food, washing up, carrying shopping, camping equipment. Being involved with the group is part of the experience. 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? We had opportunities to buy crafts from local communities. In the towns there were shops selling crafts made by local village women groups. It was possible to barter in some places but as the cost of most things was negligible in reality, don't try too hard! Tourism does have an environmental impact, but for countries like Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, it is a vital part of their economy. Visiting wildlife national parks creates income for them to sustain the natural environment and protect declining species. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? As someone who had not visited sub-saharan Africa before, this 3 week trip was a wonderful experience. I saw and learnt such a lot. I highly recommend it. 5 *****

Valerie Balban - 29Sep19

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? Our great guides Farai and Kalunga. Being so close to the amazing wildlife. The very different landscapes we travelled through. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Be prepared to join in and although you get very hot and dusty - it is worth it. 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? I think it did - much of the accommodation was run by local people and we often had local guides. We were encouraged not to waste water, a very precious commodity and always to take our litter with us. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? The whole trip was great and the days very varied. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? 5 *****

Dear Sunway team, we have just arrived after a wonderful safari tour visiting Zambia, Namibia and Botwana for three weeks, ending at the 19th of October in Livingstone. Now I regret that I didn't take more time to fill out the form to evaluate the journey. So here are two more aspects concerning the safari: 1. The planning of this tour has been excellent. The ballance of game drives, changing scenery and meeting people has been superb. 2. The guiding team (Kalunga and Farei) have done a great job. At every moment they have been friendly, helpful, full of informations about the land, its history, people and the wildlife. They both have been professionals and friends at the same moment. And they work together like a dream team.

Cynthia - 16Sep19

It’s been more than a month since we’ve returned from our African safari. It’s not that I’ve forgotten to email you, it’s more that I’ve been pained to look at photos and remember the incredible adventure we had, and how much we wish every day that we were still there. In my wildest dreams I could not have foreseen what we were about to experience. For a year we planned, saved, dreamt and imagined what it might be like. Nothing could have prepared us for the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and indelible memories that are now engraved in our hearts and minds forever. We had no idea how long the potted roads were, how hot and dusty the days would be, how tired we would be at the end of each day. Yet, despite this, we could not wait to greet each morning before sunrise, after packing our bags and eating our breakfast, and climbing into our dusty bus again to start another day of our intepid journey. The joy of seeing each and every animal and insect, from elephants to ants, never, ever wore thin. It was a joy and a privilege to share their world, and we were humbled by it. I would need to write a novel to express the joy of each day of our 21 day safari. I have a thousand photos to sort through and that’s after culling the ones I didn’t want! I have found a new lifelong joy in my memories of the trip of a lifetime. I have talked so much about it to friends that they recently booked the exact same tour with you, the same time next year. My girls and I are already talking about where in Africa we will go to next. We have started to save for our next greatest adventure. It can’t happen soon enough. If I had to pick one thing that I know we could not have done without on our safari, without a shadow of a doubt, it was our tour guides William and Victor from Sunway Safaris. They were absolutely AMAZING and Sunway are lucky to have them as part of their team. They made the trip for us. My daughter turned 13 while we were there, and although she was by far the youngest, William and Victor became her uncles because they were so great with her. They also helped to make her feel very special on her birthday. I cannot speak more highly of how wonderful these two guides were. We would go back there just to be able to do another tour with them again!! I’m so glad we took a chance and didn’t listen to the naysayers about traveling to Africa at a time of uncertainty and civil unrest. Africa is so unbelievably and unapologetically raw in so many ways. She has a way of getting under your skin and leaving you wanting, needing so much more. I can’t member who said it, but they got it right when they said if you can only travel to two places in your life - make sure the first is Africa.....and the second, is Africa. Ngā mihi

Ewen & Sue - 23Aug19

A great adventure on your amazing continent. Our guides Maxwell and Stephen explained Africa is not a holiday or safari and it sure was an adventure. Their professionalism, knowledge, culinary skills and a basic willingness to share were more than we expected. Guides are swapped each tour and we were exceptionally lucky to experience the skills of these two guys. On one occasion safety was an issue but Stephens cool calm manner made us feel comfortable when the hippo tried to join our makoros. Also Maxwells handling of an injured Black Mamba on the road showed his empathy with animals in general. As the "oldies" in our tour group we were very well looked after. Going beyond the requirements of the tour when my husbands suitcase failed to arrive in Livingstone before the tour left, they made sure we stopped at the appropriate shops to purchase another wardrobe!! When the bag finally arrived in Livingstone they collected it and had it waiting at the finish of the tour for us. Well done Sunway.
Shandle and Petros gave us a great gift for these 3 weeks. We always felt safe in their hands. This journey will say in our minds forever. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.

Mr & Mrs Thomas, UK - 08Feb19

Dear Sunway Marketing Team, We would like to thank you very much for an amazing trip that we recently did with your company. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? Very difficult to choose. We were very lucky in seeing all of the "Big 5" - including lions with their recent kills very close to the track in Etosha National Park, and elephants bathing in the river within metres of out boat in Chobe National Park. But it was also really interesting visiting a local village in Namibia and learning about their history, current way of life and aspirations for the future. 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Be prepared for some early starts and long days, but also for some incredible experiences. Ask lots of questions - our tour leaders, as well as numerous local guides, were very knowledgeable and keen to share that knowledge with us. This is a wonderful trip if you're happy to muck in, share the chores with your fellow travellers and the tour leaders, and be open to new experiences. 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? Absolutely. Many of the lodges were owned by, or largely staffed by, local people. Leftover food was shared with local people, and our tour leaders gave large containers of water to people in Namibia, were rainfall was lower than normal for January. Sunway Safaris, who ran the tour, are actively involved in environmental projects, and encourage those on their tours to participate. Visiting game parks and areas such as the Okavango Delta that are focused on conservation contributes to conservation efforts. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? Exceeded all our expectations. The itinerary was excellent, our tour leaders Ishmael and Norman were wonderful - professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and with great senses of humour, and the accommodation was varied and generally great. Sleeping in a bamboo tree-house with a deck overlooking the river and listening to the hippos as you fall asleep takes some beating. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? 5 *****

Julie and Phil, New Zealand - 16Oct18

Dear Sunway Team Just back from our Namibia/Botswana Delta trip! It was amaaaaaaaaaaaazing. Best trip I've ever done, and I've spent 30 years travelling....Thanks so much for all your help and advice. Thanks again, It was the best 50th birthday present ever!

Danila - 20Jun18

Dear Sunway Team Truly excellent! There was a good mixed group of people, but overall our guides, Jeff & Tawanda, really made the trip as good as it was. They worked hard, were up first, and to bed last. Always cheerful and smiling, full of information about the regions we were travelling through, the animals and people. They were an excellent team, and clearly have an enormous knowledge and love of the area! 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday? So much to choose from! Victoria Falls, game viewings in Etosha, walking with the San in the Kalahari, Okavango Delta. So many fantastic memories! 2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday? Pack less than you think, you really don't need it! Don't forget the right kind of travel adaptors, so you can charge your camera battery. If you're thinking about booking, don't think too long, just do it! 3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation? I think so. We stayed in local places, shopped very locally, were given some opportunities to support conservation (SOS). I would have liked to see a large drinking water supply on the bus, so we could refill reuseable bottles, instead of buying single use plastic bottles. Although many of us did buy large multi- litre bottles, single use plastic is still a huge issue. 4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall? *****

Lee & Steve  - 14Jun18

Dear Sunway Team We (Lee and Steve) are on our last day of a fantastic 4 week holiday in your great continent. This included a 21 day Southern Circle Zambia, Namibia and Botswana trip with Jeff and Tawanda from Sunway and five extra nights in Cape Town, two in Livingston and finishing with three in Johburg. Lee has wanted to visit Africa since she was a small girl and since this May was her 60th year and we celebrated our 40th year of marriage we figured it was time. Our package was organised by Nicki from Escape4Africa travel and her assistance and advice has proven comprehensive and very much appreciated. Her replies to enquiries and tour details where prompt and even included a phone call to us in Australia. Sunway’s content was excellent as clearly set out in your itinerary and “Tour Briefing & Final Instructions” We found the scheduling of what was always going to be a demanding itinerary to be perfect for us with big days punctuated by easier ones but always packed full of adventure. The accommodation was similarly as detailed and in many cases way better than expected. And the best till last. Jeff and Tawanda made this trip for us. Their knowledge and experience was second to none with many wildlife sightings only due to their skill. The meals were amazing (even coming from a seasoned Aussie camp cook) and the people management special. Our group, we would call very diverse, and at times the complaints our tour leaders managed ridiculous. Some of our members had obviously NOT read Sunway’s extensive information. Hats off to two very committed Sunway guides. As mentioned in our evaluation, we are happy to further discuss this trip. We will be recommending this style of trip to our friends and family.

 Daniela and Adrian(Adi)Nadler  - 25Aug17

Dear Sunway Safaris, I refer to our undertaken trip of 21 days tour NBa21. We have just returned home and I wanted to share with you the impressions we had of this trip-I feel that the feedback form handed to you through our guides is not sufficient to present a good, truthful impression we all- I presume most of us had, of this trip. First I refer to the able, generous ,professional guidance we received from Pumi and Petros. Pumi proved himself to be the best driver I have met, having a great sense of proportion and always attentive to our needs and remarks, could not think of a more suitable guide to our tour. In addition he is intelligent, gentle and knows how to cope with disturbing situations. Petros ,proved to be a very able, intelligent guide ,describing to us many events he had as child and grown up ,with animals and life in the village in his homeland Zimbabwe. They both had practical and operative attitudes and knowledge of constructing a good menu that took in consideration our dietary complexity-vegetarian, anti-chicken meat etc. If I was to use Sunway-Safaris again, they will be our best choice. Accommodation- was very nicely chosen- I myself had some problems in the small tents in Okavango Delta. Would have preferred a larger tent- abt one meter bigger. Our contacts to the local population were good- I personally would have preferred more but most of the group was fine with what we have got. Again I want to stress the fact that the success of the tour was greatly due to the guidance of our guides and the choice of accommodation done by Sunway Safaris.

Dee and Richard Humphrys  - 27Jul17

Dear Dirk, We returned home a few days ago, having completed the above group adventure with our guides Grace and Iton. We would like to thank Grace and Iton for making our trip such a wonderful experience. We saw and did so many fascinating things; wildlife, scenery and people, and enjoyed the company of our fellow companions, who were all very friendly. Grace and Iton kept us entertained on some of the long journeys with their great senses of humour and quaint stories and made sure that we were as well prepared as possible for the various experiences. When Iton was needed to help another group because of illness, Edwin joined us, with his particular knowledge and cheerfulness. They dealt without fuss with any problems that cropped up, whether it was the window in the truck breaking and falling out, or finding that we had nowhere to stay when we reached Desert Camp. Our suggestion of sleeping in the truck was not taken seriously that day! We saw elephants by one of our lodges, a black back jackal with a puff adder in the middle of one of the Etosha tracks, a lion asleep by a parking area there and 2 mature male lions seeing two younger males off their territory. On a wildlife walk in the Okvango Delta we saw lions with their kill and on the Chobe river boat trip we saw many animals at close quarters, which was very special, especially families of elephants, and hippos out of the water and walking on the land. Thank you so much again, Grace and Iton, for our very exciting and memorable adventure – we shall not forget you or Africa, especially as I have spent much time noting all the events in my journal! And adding even more as footnotes when I remember them! We hope to send you a group photo when we have sorted through them all (several hundred), and if you come to England please get in touch. I am planning to make my quilt, Grace, from the African fabrics I bought, and when it is finished I will send you a photo. We came back to our little village and to our surprise, after all our adventures in Africa, everything seemed to be the same here! Apart from everyone wanting to hear all about it..

 Marie Stone - 11Oct16

Anywere and Chris were amazing guides. This tour went above and beyond my expectations.

Martin - 12Aug16

We completed a trip, from Livingstone in Zambia through the Caprivi Strip to Namibia (highlights - Etosha pan, Swakopmund, Sossusvlei Dunes) and then back to Zambia via Botswana (highlights - Okavango Delta tented camp and Chobe River evening game cruise). The operator was Sunway Safaris, and I cannot speak too highly of the whole experience. Perhaps the greatest single contribution to the success of our safari were the two outstanding guides, Moses and Valentine, who were extraordinarily professional in every way. They combined a great variety of skills (driving, cooking, setting up meals, attending to our requirements etc) with an encyclopedic knowledge, which enhanced all aspects of the tour. The itinerary was excellently chosen, commencing with the Victoria Falls and ending at Chobe, before returning to Livingstone. We covered some 6000km, over all sorts of roads, but the vehicle provided performed extremely well and sufficed for all our needs. We were a party of 12, which proved to be an ideal number. Accommodation each night was perfectly satisfactory, although some lodges were obviously better than others. Meals were a mixture of restaurant meals, usually at own expense, or meals provided by our guides at the vehicle, nicknamed the "mobile restaurant". All of us pitched in when necessary to clean dishes and set up the dining table, which actually enhanced the experience considerably. You can't do better - and the overall cost was very reasonable.

Johan Demuynck - 18Oct15

Overall it was a good trip and I enjoyed the sightseeing, nature and wildlife. Thanks!

Simon Johan - 06Sep15

This tour was very well organised and the guides were top class!

Dagmar Linien - 30Aug15

Our tour was wonderful, an unforgettable experience. I will rave about tit to anyone who will listen. We loved Grace and Paul.

Susan Perry - 30Aug15

This was the trip of a lifetime for me and it exceeded my expectations. All thanks to Grace and Paul our Guides. We will definitely recommend Sunway! There were times when I would have liked a little more information (eg: tipping) but when I asked my questions were always answered. I can't wait to get home and look through my photos and send some to Sunway as well.

Barbara Wiesner - 30Aug15

I enjoyed my 3 weeks. I think this tour had a wonderful variety of animal viewing, hikes, river cruising and cultural activities. Our guides provided us with so much knowledge. I had an unforgettable safari.

Thom Dessing- 23Aug15

System of 2 guides who can drive and cook works very well.  Both had a very good focus on suctomer satifaction.

Pamela Watters - 23Aug15

An excellent trip that exceeded our expectations.

Rachel Guinee UK - 08Jul15

Dear Dirk/Sunway Safaris Well...what can I tell you...we had such an amazing trip with Sunway - we loved every moment of it and would most certainly take another adventure with you if the opportunity arises. I do want to tell you that Greg and Dee were outstanding in making our trip a good one. We were hugely impressed by Greg's competance and maturity and amazed to find he was only 25 and 3 years into the job...he just went the extra all the time to see that everything was as good as it could be and to share his wealth of knowledge and experience and love of Africa with us all. Dee too had so much experience and knowlege to share and although only 6 months into this role she was superb and always looking to learn more herself from local guides and share it with all of us. The whole trip went without a hitch, they drove us safely and expertly and we saw more than we could have dreamed of. Most of all it was fun, everyone contributed and participated which was great. And the food was excellent! Rachel Guinee UK

Perfect mixture of different travelling elements: culture, landscape and animals.

Sandra Lenarduzzi - 12 Jan 15

Hello, I'm Sandra and write from Italy. I enjoyed the tour in Zambia and Namibia in December/January 2014/15. I spent 15 beautiful days with guides Albert and Joanell and the other tourists. I would like to thank the guide Albert Muchena and your staff: during the flight connection Johannesburg-Livingstone my luggage was lost. You made the best to find it, to send it with a flight from Johannesburg to Windhoek. I received the bag 5 days later in Etosha National Park and it was a marvellous surprise!!!! Many thanks for your competence, help and courtesy!!!. Best regards Sandra Lenarduzzi

Evie and Ken Good - 3 June 12

Hi Bruce, We would like to thank Sunway for the marvellous holiday we had. It was truly the best we've ever had ( we have clocked up over 130 years between us! ) and an experience we are unlikely to equal again. The itinerary was perfect and exciting. A special mention must be made of the 2 guides, Shandle and Jonathan, they did everything possible to allow us to get maximum pleasure and experience from the adventure. In particular Shandle's management of all situations and his local knowledge was inspirational. If we decide we are up to another African holiday Sunway safaris will be our first port of call. Please pass our gratitude to Shandle and Jonathan for a great time and keeping an eye on the wandering oldie with a camera. Best regards Evie and Ken Good

Robin and Gonny - 27Sep16

Dear Sunway, Looking back on our holiday from last August and September going from Victoria waterfalls to Namibia and Botswana, we like to thank you about the wonderful holiday we had in Africa. Still if we are thinking about everything we have seen and done we only can say "It was the best holiday ever until now." We travel a lot around the world and seen lots of travel organisations.Your organisation, specially the tour staff did a wonderful job. They know how to make your holiday a thing never to forget and wish you never leave Africa. We are now thinking about coming back to Africa next year. If it is possible then we will travel with you for sure and like to have Carina and Yvonne as our tour leaders. Thanks again for this super holiday and hoop to see you soon. Greets Robin & Gonny

Itinerary Summary

Limited Participation: An essential part of your safari is participation. From carrying your own bag to your room to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. Your tour leaders will do the meal preparation when required but we do ask the clients to help (on rotation) with the washing up. There are some long travel days which means early morning starts so we all need to get involved to make the day run efficiently.

From the culture of the Zulu nation to the Portuguese and Arab influences in food and architecture of Mozambique. Beaches, excellent diving to big game viewing and bush walks with local ranger. The accommodation, particularly in Mozambique is simple and the roads can be slow. Local facilities are limited so most of the meals are prepared by the Sunway crew. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. This is an easy paced, relaxing safari for those looking for a different experience in Southern Africa.

Day 1 - 3 JOHANNESBURG to ZULULAND   [tented lodge Bx2 Lx3 Dx3] [B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner] Zululand, home of the nation forged by King Shaka Zulu - stretches from the warm Indian Ocean, across the rolling green hills to the Drakensberg Mountains. We depart Johannesburg at 06:30am, travelling across the Highveld before descending into the heart of Kwazulu Natal known for it’s rich culture and spectacular wildlife. Our lodge for the next 3 nights is situated on a private nature reserve. We explore the natural serenity of the bush on a morning walk followed by an exciting afternoon game drive in Mkuzi Game Reserve. Mkuzi plays a key role in the preservation of the endangered black and white rhino and we look forward to watching from a hide overlooking a waterhole, as the animals quench their thirst. On the third day we explore Hluhluwe Game Reserve, and in the afternoon get to know the people of the area as we visit a local Zulu community and our guides interpret the history, culture and traditions of the modern Zulu people.

Day 4 KOSI BAY  [chalet BL-] Kosi Bay Nature Reserve covers a region of fertile estuaries, mangroves, dune forest and tidal lakes. This afternoon we walk down to the lake to explore this amazing eco-system by boat and the following morning we take a 4WD transfer to the Kosi estuary mouth. A special feature of the Kosi Bay estuary is the traditional practice of subsistence tidal trap fishing. We have time to swim, walk on the beach or snorkel the shallow reefs in the estuary mouth.

Day 5 - 6 PONTA DO OURO  [lodge BL-] Ponta do Ouro is the ocean lover’s mecca of Southern Mozambique. A highlight of this safari is the opportunity to join a local dolphin research team on ocean safaris. Research since the early 1990s indicates that there are approximately 400 individual dolphins moving through the Ponta do Ouro area, of which about 150 are resident. We have 2 boat launches planned which gives us a chance to snorkel on the shallow reefs, view dolphins and whales from the boat, and hopefully swim with dolphins if their activity at the time permits us to enter the water. A wild dolphin encounter is an extraordinary wildlife experience. (Should weather prevent a boat launch then a portion of your local payment will be refunded to you pro rata).

Day 7 MAPUTO   [hotel BL-] Maputo, formerly known as Lourenço Marques. Situated on a natural harbour, Maputo is the economic hub of Mozambique. Once referred to as the “African Riviera”, Portuguese and African cultures meet in an exquisite blend of seafood and vibrant life. Sample the excellent seafood in a local restaurant (own expense).

Day 8 - 9 INHAMBANE   [chalets Bx2 Lx2 Dx1] Travelling north along the Indian Ocean coastline, we drive through mango and cashew nut plantations en-route to the town of Inhambane. Arab influences are strong in Inhambane dating back to when slaves, ivory, gold and spices were traded. Explore Inhambane and its 200 year old cathedral and we visit the enchanting fresh produce market before moving to Praia de Barra. Sit back, relax and enjoy the warm sea and expansive white beaches. For the more energetic, there are optional activities such as dhow rides, scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing and surfing (own expense).

Day 10 CHIZAVANE  [casitas BLD] We turn south along the coast to a secluded fishing lodge on the beach north of Xai-Xai. The lodge is perched on the coastal dunes with a magnificent view of the surrounding natural bush and expansive beach. Low tide exposes a long rocky reef parallel to the beach, which creates a shallow, calm pool ideal for snorkelling and swimming. For our last night on the beach we enjoy a fish braai (barbeque) dinner at the lodge restaurant overlooking the warm Indian Ocean.

Day 11 - 12 KRUGER NATIONAL PARK   [chalet Bx2 Lx2 Dx1] Leaving the Indian Ocean coast, we travel through the Limpopo Transfrontier Park and enter Kruger National Park, South Africa. An icon of nature conservation, Kruger is big game country! As we make our way to our camp, we enjoy an exciting game drive and hope to spot lions, giraffe and elephant among others.

Day 13 GREATER KRUGER  [lodge BLD] The following morning we are up early and we spend the day exploring the national park before we leave and head to our private game lodge. Relax around the pool or the camp fire on our final evening in the tranquil African wilderness.

Day 14 JOHANNESBURG   [- B - -] Our final day on tour starts with an exciting game walk. We explore the private game reserve on foot with our rangers. While the opportunity to see big game exists our guides will also take the time to interpret the tracks and signs of the African bush. We head back to the lodge for brunch before we return to Johannesburg in the evening, sun-tanned, laid-back and ready to rejoin life. Tour ends at 18:00 at the hotel.

[Please Note: we do a free drop off at Johannesburg airport on day 14 at +/- 17:00 so you can book your flight out for the last day of tour]

  • Responsible Tourism

We spend 1 night in the Kosi Bay area. This KwaZulu Natal park is an example of how conservation and the needs of the local communities can work hand in hand. The local community is permitted to harvest fish within the reserve using environmentally sustainable, traditional reed fishing nets. KZN Wildlife are pioneers in the development of sustainable tourism.

Income generated from visitors goes directly back into the parks so that anti-poaching patrols can function (including fishing quota checks), parks fences and road networks can be maintained, and the management of the reserve's wildlife assets can be correctly controlled and monitored.

We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children).

If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc)

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA AND MOZAMBIQUE

South Africa has a lovely temperate climate filled with plenty of sunny, dry days for the most part. The main factors influencing conditions are altitude and the surrounding oceans. Temperatures drop by about 6°C for every 1000m you climb (or 3.5°F per 1000ft). The Indian Ocean, runs along the eastern coast, has a warm current and causes the eastern side to feel more tropical than the west. Mozambique, being closer to the Equator and also on the east coast of Africa, has a significantly tropical climate. South Africa and Mozambique experience winter in June, July and August and summer months are December, January and February.

Dry season is from May to September : Water becomes scarce and wildlife gather around predictable water resources.  May :- Autumn temperatures are typically 10°C/50°F to 26°C/79°F and slightly warmer in Mozambique due to the moderating effect of the ocean.

June, July & August :- Winter morning game drives can be cold at around 6°C/42°F in South Africa, with Mozambique not reaching such low temperatures, but it climbs to 23-25°C/73-77° at midday in both countries.

September & October :- Spring begins and mornings are from 12°C/53°F warming up to 28°C/82°F. It can be somewhat warmer on the South African east coast and Mozambique, with temperatures over 30°C/86°F and quite high humidity.

Green season is from November to April : Birding is fabulous, and baby season means wonderful wildlife sightings.  November & December:- Typically temperatures range between 15°C/59°F and 28°C/82°F. The northern parts of the South African east coast aswell as Mozambique, receive fascinating marine visitors such as nesting Leatherback turtles and whalesharks, as well as Humpback whales.

January & February :- These are the Summer or "Green" months, with occasional storms in the afternoon. Temperatures can reach 29°C/84°F and the humidity is high in the tropical coastal areas and also on the lowveld areas of Mpumalanga.

March and April :- Lovely, clear weather and few clouds prevail, but the nights are cooler at around 15°C/59°F. Day temperatures range from 28°C/82°F down and humidity drops. Mozambique, again is slightly warmer than South Africa at this time.

Erika - Nov23

The tour provided was amazing! Our guides, Chris and Allan were awesome and did all they could to provide us with the experience of a lifetime. We were traveling as a private group of 9 people, family and friends, aged between 25 and 65. We booked the tour as private since our needs and expectations might have been a little bit different from those of ussual travelers, and we needed the tour to proceed at our own pace. As some of us did not speak English, everything needed to be translated to Czech and our guides always gave me the time to explain everything to our group in our language. Also gave us plenty of shopping time as we requested because we do like to support the local economies, bring souvenirs and taste all that we can. Also provided us with coffee stops that we needed as some of the transfer distances were very long and affected by bad traffic. And provided fresh fruits during the whole tour, which was awesome. Our tour started with unexpectedly bad weather for the first three days, but in that time we stayed in tents in one of the Sunway Lodges and the crew there also did their best to keep us comfortable. They even washed our totally muddy shoes! During the rest of the tour, the weather was great (with some exceptions). We have seen 4/5 of the big five and plenty of other animals. We even saw jackals, hyenas and honey badgers! Our tour guides always stopped and adjusted the vehicle, so we could take beautiful pictures and told us information about the animals we saw. Also, during the journey they told us about the locals, customs, history and all that we needed to understand the countries we visited better. Also, when we wanted group pictures, our tour guides were there to take them. Food during the whole tour was great, no matter if it was provided by the lodges, local restaurants or cooked by the guides. Honestly, I took the bits when the guides cooked (with our help ofc :) ) as real fun. All the accomodation provided was good, and sometimes we just wished we could stay longer. But the countries were beautiful and sadly, two weeks was the longest vacation we could do. In overall, I can only recommend Sunway as a tour provider. And big thanks to Chris and Allan. You were the best!

Well, I personally was very fascinated by Mozambique. Since I know Africa quite well by now, police controls and road conditions were quite relaxed for me, for the other three already a challenge. I must say to the two guides Ephraim and Onory: TOP! Onory was a great cook and perfect driver and both content and knowledge transfer very well positioned! There was of course another "special feature", the fact that unfortunately we could not use the border crossing in the Limpopo National Park on the day we wanted to go back from Mozambique to South Africa. Thus, five hours were driven in vain, we had to go back, choose the border at Maputo, arrived at Kruger only around 8 pm and were accompanied by rangers to the lodge. The reason for not crossing was striking lodge staff who, according to the rangers, police and villagers had "created roadside ditches and were throwing rocks at anything that approached." Kudos to the guides who were quite professional in not letting their concern show and handled everything calmly and objectively and here for Sunways: a new lodge was organized in the Kruger and the rangers who then accompanied us were then on the spot. Yes unfortunately we lost half a safari day in the Kruger, but were "compensated" for it the next two days. In the Kruger itself there were then wonderful encounters, for example with the rare wild dogs and incredibly many elephants, leopard and more. A very special highlight was a lioness with her four cubs. In general, we have seen very very many young animals! In Mozambique, a highlight was on the beach of Chizavame, where we suddenly saw whales near the beach. But also Inhambane was quite remarkable as well as the city life in Maputo. A quick conclusion: I would recommend this trip to anyone who is traveling to Africa for the first time and wants some adventure. Mozambique has totally fascinated me, also by the hospitality and openness of the local people. And finally, once again a big praise for the overall organization by Sunway and the two guides.

We recently returned from a safari through South Africa and Mozambique, including stops in Zululand and Swaziland. This was our first trip to South Africa, so it was not without some trepidation. Well, our holiday was up to, and actually exceeded, all our expectations. The places visited, accommodations, activities, food and general organization were excellent. Our guide Clinton, did everything to make this trip amazing. He was really professional and knowledgeable of wildlife, and at the same time friendly and good humored. A perfect driver. We've always felt safe! I would highly recommend this trip to everyone. Thank you Sunway Safaris for excellent organization, we'll travel with you again.

I returned from my trip to Africa this past weekend, and wanted to share my experience with your team. My friend and I were on the Moa14 tour which departed Johannesburg on September 2, 2018. I had such an amazing experience on this tour. I wanted to commend our guides Jacques and Joe. Jacques was a strong leader and competent driver. Joe was so helpful and always positive. They both were very knowledgeable about the people, cultures, and fauna/flora. They were patient with our group and very professional, but still were a lot of fun to be around! I was able to see and experience everything I had hoped to, and even some surprises that truly made my trip incredible. Please extend my warm thanks to them both. I have been raving to people at home about my experiences with Sunway, and am already trying to save up for another tour in Southern Africa! .

I just want to say thank you for a great tour. Our guides Tony and Brian were excellent and very helpful during the whole tour. Tony is a very safe driver with a great knowledge of nature and wildlife. So when I will book a Botwana tour I want to book the tour with this guide. He inspired me to discover more of the beautiful african countrys by talking about the great beauty of Africa.

This is the second time I have done a safari holiday in Africa and the first time with Sunway. I was certainly not disappointed and infact the holiday and accommodation were far better than I had expected. I did a 2wk 'beach and bush' from Johannesburg through Swaziland and Mozambique. the tour was very well organised, guides Farai and William highly knowledgeable on all our questions, either flora or fauna, and did their jobs very professionally. The tour included 3 nights in several places, a welcome break from the long days in the truck, which obviously was a big part of the trip. We did several safaris in a couple of parks, and saw loads. The food on the tour was top quality and rarely convenience foods, lunches often picnics on the road sides and dinners usually a fabulous meal around the camp fire. The 'permanent tents' were far from being tents, all with very good sanitary and hot water, and the places we stayed one night in were more 4* than basic. The programme, although it included thousands of kms and long travelling days was...excellent. I think the entire group would agree that there was nothing we would have changed in hindsight. well done to the guides and organisers.

Interesting tour with a lot of variation and very good guiding team. No problems with organisation.

I would just like to send a personal message to say a very BIG thank you for a fabulous adventure c/o Sunway Safaris. The itinerary was super, we loved the bush and beach combo. Ben was a star on every level, and it was hard to believe it was only Solly's first safari with your company - a real asset. We have told so many people about our wonderful time, and have been loaning your brochure to lots of interested friends - I hope they book with you, and have the same great experience we. Again, many, many thanks. Amanda, Terry, Beau & Jade (I'm sure Ros will send her own thanks)
