Star Trek Timelines Tips, Tricks & Strategy Guide to Rule the Galaxy

By: Author Tim McNeil

Posted on Last updated: January 26, 2016

Disruptor Beam has a new game for all you Trekkies out there, and it’s called Star Trek Timelines. The game has just been released for Android and iOS mobile devices, and it allows you to assemble a crew from hundreds of characters from different Star Trek iterations, including the Original Series, the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. You can also command some of the franchise’s most memorable starships, including the USS Enterprise and Voyager, and take part in some highly-detailed 3D ship vs ship battles. It promises to cover the entire history of Star Trek, and you will eventually get to the bottom of all those clashing timelines while playing the game.

Even if you’re a Trekkie, you might need some help playing this game and learning the ropes. Now, regardless whether you’re a fan or not, we believe the following Star Trek Timelines tips and tricks will be just what you need to get off to a good start and figure things out as you progress through the game.

1. Every Crew Member Has Specific Strengths

All the crew members you can choose in this game have their own strengths, or specific skills they excel in, including, but not limited to Combat, Diplomacy, and a lot more. You will notice this in battles, as your ship’s crew members will have positions matching the skills. Properly matching the position with the skill will give you an edge in battle, and that’s especially true in the away team part of the battle, where you have to use the right crew member for the right task in order to progress through the tree of events.

2. How To Further Succeed In Away Team Segments

The away team segments can be quite tricky, and here’s why. If you use the same crew member repeatedly over segments, their skills will decline temporarily. That means you will have to alternate between crew members in your away team. Basically, you want to go through different paths in the away team segments. Here’s one simple example – once you complete a Combat event but have two spaces ahead of you, choose a different type of event before doing another Combat event, so as to allow your crew member’s skills to return back to normal in the next such event.

3. Make Sure Your Crew Members Are Equipped

Each crew member in Star Trek Timelines has their own equipment slots that, when equipped, will improve their skills. Of course, you need to be sure that you’re choosing the right equipment in order for those skills to improve. And that actually leads us to the next tip, which is very important if you want your crew members to become better.

4. About Advancing A Crew Member

If you’re able to equip all of a character’s equipment slots, that means you can advance them. Advancing a crew member improves their skills and their maximum level. Just tap on the equipment box for a specific character and you’ll be told where you can find the type of gear they need to be equipped with. Be sure that you focus on your favorite AND most powerful characters so you can make the advancing process worth it.

5. Using The Same Crew Members Repeatedly Isn’t A Good Idea

Star Trek Timelines does indeed punish players a lot for going into a routine. And here’s another example – using the same crew members repeatedly will prevent the rest of your team from leveling up, and that’s only going to turn out to be counterproductive. Crew members will only earn experience if you choose them for a ship battle or an away team battle, and if they’re on the proverbial bench, they’ll stagnate where they are and not gain any XP. One workaround for this would be to use experience boosters to idle crew members, but such boosters are few and far in between.

6. Grind It Out For Rare Items

If you need some more rare items for anything in the game, then the best thing to do is to grind it out – replay older missions that you have already completed. By that time, your crew should be substantially stronger with better equipment, so that should mean you’ll have an easier time completing those missions with a perfect three stars and gathering some rare items.

7. Accept Faction Missions For More Materials

Once you reach Level 4, you would be able to take on Faction missions. These are optional missions that would need less crew members, and as the name implies, are assigned by the Star Trek universe’s factions. They are similar in nature to ship battles and away team battles, as you’ll need to assign the right crew members for specific tasks. If you need more crafting materials and boosters, then take these side missions on.

Missions , also known as episodes and conflicts , are a key part of Star Trek Timelines , allowing players to progress in the storyline. Conflicts begin with players selecting their crew . Different crew are better suited for different tasks. Each character is proficient in at least one skill : Diplomacy , Science , Security , Command , Engineering and Medicine . Skills can be improved by leveling up, and fusing characters with extra copies of themselves. Crew also have inherent abilities called traits . For example, Commander Riker has the Pilot trait.

Security

By completing conflicts, players can gain crew experience, credits , equipment, knowledge and many other items. Completing conflicts is a key way to improve crew in Star Trek Timelines .

How Do Star Trek Stardates Actually Work?

Picard and Troi celebrate

There are few handier delivery mechanisms for "Star Trek" exposition than a Captain's log entry, crucial Starfleet records that mark time with "stardates" — an enigmatic calendar system integrating decimals into each date. Although based on a real-world astronomical dating system, the Starfleet version doesn't make a ton of sense because it was never meant to, which is why  the "Star Trek" timeline can seem confusing  the deeper you dig into it.

As outlined in a  1967 "Star Trek" writer and director's guide, "The progression of stardates in your script should remain constant but don't worry about whether or not there is a progression from other scripts." Still, understanding the Julian date system can be a good starting point for those who care to try.

Speaking with The Space Review  in 2019, "Star Trek: The Original Series" technical advisor Kellam de Forest explained that the futuristic calendar system was inspired by the Julian day — the solar day measurement used in the 365-day Julian solar dating system that predated the Gregorian calendar. Because the Julian day system creates a continued count of dates from the beginning of the Julian period, the ease of calculation between two dates without breaks has made it the preferred calendar for many scientific applications, including astronomical software. Julian dates are calculated by adding the Julian day — that is, the solar day since the beginning of the Julian calendar — and then adding a decimal point to indicate the fraction of the day that has passed since noon in Universal Time Code (UTC). Although the Julian date calculates days running into the millions, only the final five digits are commonly used by astronomers — and just four are used in "Star Trek."

Star Trek's stardates are intentionally difficult to calculate

According to the "Star Trek" writer's guide, the Starfleet calendar system was invented to deemphasize the in-universe date. As the guide puts it, "We invented 'Stardate' to avoid continually mentioning Star Trek's century (actually, about two hundred years from now), and getting into arguments about whether this or that would have developed by then."

Speaking on the 1988 documentary  "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story," de Forest emphasized that this almost wasn't the case since the original script contained dates from the Gregorian calendar. Upon reviewing the script, de Forest felt this didn't feel right for the future spacefaring society. As a solution, he pitched the Julian-inspired concept, which the tech advisor felt had a futuristic vibe thanks to its use of decimals.

While  "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry  liked the concept as a jumping-off point, his version was always meant to be a little esoteric, as Samuel A. Peeples, who wrote the second pilot for "Star Trek: The Original Series," recounted in  "Gene Roddenberry: The Myth and Man Behind Star Trek."  According to Peeples, "We tried to set up a system that would be unidentifiable unless you knew how we did it." Conceptualizing the revised stardate system over drinks, Roddenberry and Peeples took into account the weirdness of space and relative time, ultimately concluding that any  date-related continuity errors in "Star Trek"  could be chalked up to these issues. Or as the "Star Trek" writer's guide put it, "Stardates are a mathematical formula which varies depending on location in the galaxy, velocity of travel, and other factors, can vary widely from episode to episode." In other words, don't think too hard about it.

Tales of the empire timeline: when each episode takes place.

Tales of the Empire spans the Star Wars timeline from The Clone Wars to The Mandalorian, revealing key events between the movies and TV shows.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Tales of the Empire episodes 1-6

  • Episodes of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire are not arranged chronologically, jumping around the Star Wars timeline.
  • Clues from each episode help determine when it takes place, and some align closely with movies or shows.
  • The final episode is the most challenging to date, with speculation about the time period it is set in.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire consists of six episodes set at various points in the Star Wars canon timeline, expanding upon and even overlapping with storylines from the movies and TV shows. Like its predecessor, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi , the show is split into two storylines, with the first exploring the backstory of Ahsoka 's Morgan Elsbeth and the second revealing what happened to former Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee after Star Wars: The Clone Wars . However, this means that all six episodes are not arranged in a strict chronological order and instead jump around the Star Wars timeline .

This can make it confusing to determine when exactly each episode takes place, but several clues reveal the answer. Some episodes are easy to place, occurring directly alongside the Star Wars movies and TV shows , while others only have slight indications of when the episode is set. A few episodes require pure speculation and could be set at multiple points in the timeline, creating questions for future stories to answer. From the prequel era to the Mandoverse, Tales of the Empire uses each episode to build off key moments in the Star Wars timeline and create an engaging overarching narrative.

Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire Episode Guide

Episode 1 "the path of fear", 20 bby - concurrently with star wars: the clone wars season 4, episode 19 "massacre".

Tales of the Empire episode 1 is the easiest to place , as it is set during the Separatist attack on Dathomir in The Clone Wars season 4. When Count Dooku's former apprentice, Asajj Ventress, returns to her people, he sends General Grievous to exact revenge on the Nightsisters for their attempt on his life in season 3. Following the massacre, Morgan is taken in by the Mountain Clan, who she tries to prepare for a fight against the droid army. This means she is likely still on Dathomir when Savage Oppress brings Darth Maul to be healed by Mother Talzin.

Morgan Elsbeth

Hailing from the planet Dathomir, Morgan Elsbeth's people were almost wiped out during the Clone Wars after their leader, Mother Talzin, became a rival to Darth Sidious himself. Morgan swore loyalty to the Empire, and became a close associate of Grand Admiral Thrawn himself. When Thrawn was stranded in a distant galaxy, she spearheaded efforts to retrieve him, prompted by visions cast by the Great Mothers of Peridea. She was sacrificed by Thrawn to buy him time to escape Peridea, with Ahsoka and her allies stranded there.

Episode 2 "The Path Of Anger"

Unknown - sometime before star wars rebels season 3..

Tales of the Empire episode 2, meanwhile, is impossible to date precisely. Thrawn is still an Admiral when he approaches Morgan near the end of the episode, a promotion he received after quelling the Botajef Insurgency in Star Wars: Thrawn by Timothy Zahn. Thrawn was later promoted to Grand Admiral just before the start of Star Wars Rebels season 3 in 2 BBY , the same year the TIE Defender Project officially began. This means the episode should take place shortly before Star Wars Rebels season 3, but the characters' young appearances mean that it could be a few years earlier.

Episode 3 "The Path Of Hate"

C. 9 aby - shortly before the mandalorian season 2, episode 5 "chapter 13: the jedi".

Thankfully, Tales of the Empire episode 3 is another easy one to place in the Star Wars timeline. Nadura manages to send a distress call before she is killed in an explosion, which is received by Lady Bo-Katan Kryze of Mandalore. Since the Nite Owls were busy tracking down Moff Gideon, Bo-Katan likely passed the information on to Ahsoka Tano , who worked with Din Djarin to free the people of Corvus in The Mandalorian season 2. Having Morgan kill a New Republic delegation also sets up her being arrested and transported to trial at the beginning of Ahsoka season 1.

While The Mandalorian begins in 9 ABY, conflicting reports from series creator Jon Favreau and Star Wars reference books make the show's timeline confusing. Star Wars: Timlines dates the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett to 9 ABY , while Favreau has stated that there is a time skip before season 3 begins. This became more confusing with Ahsoka season 1, which seemed to take place immediately after The Mandalorian season 2 but was revealed to be set after season 3. All of this makes it difficult to determine what year this episode is set.

Episode 4 "Devoted"

19 bby - concurrently with and after star wars: episode iii - revenge of the sith.

Tales of the Empire episode 4 begins during Anakin Skywalker's on the Jedi Temple in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith , and Barriss can see the explosions from her prison cell. The rest of the episode takes place shortly after the events of the film, with Bariss and the other Inquisitors swearing loyalty to Darth Vader at Fortress Inquisitorius, which will eventually be completed by the time of Obi-Wan Kenobi season 1. This would also place the episode after Vader's first meeting with the Inquisitors in Star Wars: Darth Vader (2017) #6 by Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Why Darth Vader Didn't Kill (SPOILER) In Tales of the Empire

Episode 5 "realization", c. 19 bby - shortly after star wars: episode iii - revenge of the sith.

Tales of the Jedi episode 5 doesn't have a precise timeline placement , but it is likely set in the same year as Revenge of the Sith . Barriss still asks questions about the Empire, shows kindness to civilians, and attempts to reason with the Jedi rather than kill them. If the episode were set any later, the Inquisitors would have already confronted Barriss for holding back and not embracing the dark side, so it can't have been too long since she joined their ranks. This would place episode 5 around the same time as Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 1.

Barriss Offee

The Mirialan apprentice of Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee became disillusioned with the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars. She ultimately betrayed the Jedi, even launching a terrorist attack on the Jedi Temple itself, and framed Ahsoka for the crime. Exposed, Barriss was imprisoned - but she was recovered by the Empire shortly after Revenge of the Sith, joining the ranks of the Imperial Inquisitors.

Episode 6 "The Way Out"

Unknown - sometime after obi-wan kenobi.

The final episode of Tales of the Empire is the most difficult to date , but there are few indications of its place in the timeline. Barriss appears older, implying a significant time skip, so the episode could be set around Star Wars Rebels C. 5 BBY. Darth Vader commanded the Grand Inquisitor to hunt Force-sensitive children in the Star Wars Rebels series premiere, so the child Bariss saves could have been one of the first targets. Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger also protected children from the Inquisitors in Star Wars Rebels season 2, episode 10 "The Future of The Force."

At minimum, Tales of the Empire episode 6 must be set after 9 BBY since Lyn Rakish (the Fourth Sister) was still a member of the Inquisitorius in Obi-Wan Kenobi . This would be a fitting timeline placement, as Barriss sends the parents of the Force-sensitive child to an "old friend" who can help them, which could connect to the Hidden Path from Obi-Wan Kenobi that helped Jedi and Force-sensitives escape the Empire. It's possible that Barriss' contact could be Ahsoka Tano, who agreed to work with Bail Organa and the Rebellion in the final episode of Tales of the Jedi .

One possible explanation for Bariss' aging is her Force healing which, if it involves transferring life energy like Rey, could take a toll over time.

Curiously, the Fourth Sister doesn't seem to have aged at all compared to Barriss , who shouldn't have aged much either. Vernestra Rwoh, another Mirialan Jedi, lived to be at least 116 years old, meaning a Force-sensitive Mirialan like Barriss could also have a long lifespan. One possible explanation for Bariss' aging is her Force healing which, if it involves transferring life energy like Rey, could take a toll over time. Either way, there's no concrete placement for the final episode of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire , but future Star Wars releases can always clarify its place in the timeline.

It's The (Other) Enterprise! How Discovery's I.S.S. Enterprise Connects Three Eras of Star Trek

The Mirror Enterprise had a long road getting from there to here.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for Star Trek: Discovery's "Mirrors."

A graphic illustration of the I.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

StarTrek.com

In the classic 1967 episode, " Mirror, Mirror ," when Kirk, Bones, Scotty, and Uhura accidentally beamed across dimensions, and onto another version of the Enterprise , the first clue that this was a parallel universe was the fact that the ship was orbiting around the Halkan homeworld from right-to-left, rather than left-to-right. So, the first glimpse of the I.S.S. Enterprise was simply that it was taking a different path, literally, zagging when it should have been zigging.

Ever since the debut of "Mirror, Mirror," the idea of an evil Enterprise grew in our imaginations, even if we didn't get to actually see it on-screen again. Even as the Mirror Universe expanded in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Enterprise , and Star Trek: Discovery , an on-screen glimpse of the I.S.S. Enterprise — traveling on a very different path from the U.S.S. Enterprise — remained elusive. That is, until now.

In the Discovery episode " Mirrors ," the final destination of this version of the Enterprise has been revealed, and in that revelation, the entire timeline of the Star Trek universe has been traversed. Unlike the classic 1701 of the Prime Universe, the I.S.S. Enterprise 's journey has lasted centuries. Here's how that journey unites at least three different aspects of the larger Star Trek story.

How Discovery Brings Back the Mirror Enterprise

Book and Burnham stand in the Discovery shuttlecraft looking out the viewscreen towards the I.S.S. Enterprise in 'Mirrors'

"Mirrors"

In "Mirrors," the fifth episode of Discovery 's fifth season, Book and Burnham take a shuttlecraft into an unstable wormhole, hoping to find a trace of Moll and L'ak and the next piece of the puzzle that can lead them to the Progenitor 's elusive technology. But instead, adrift and displaced by nine centuries, and an entirely different dimension, they find the I.S.S. Enterprise , a ship Burnham never actually encountered while she was in the Mirror Universe in Discovery 's first season, but is nonetheless instantly familiar with.

While aboard, we learn that while this ship was part of the Terran Starfleet. At some point after the events of "Mirror, Mirror," a group of rebellious reformers commandeered this Enterprise , turning it into a ship of hope. Book finds a plaque on the ship which commemorates the ship's journey, pointing out that "The Terran High Chancellor was killed for trying to make reforms." This could reference Mirror Spock, though Burnham and Book would have no way of knowing that.

In "Mirror, Mirror," Kirk challenged Mirror Spock to be better, and try to reform the Empire which, we learned, actually did happen. But, interestingly, Burnham and Book only have one piece of the puzzle, the audience of all of the Star Trek franchise, has the rest.

The Deep Space Nine Connection

Intendant Kira and Major Kira Nerys stand face-to-face in 'Crossover'

"Crossover"

In the 1994  Deep Space Nine episode " Crossover ," Kira and Bashir find themselves in the Mirror Universe after a warp bubble kerfuffle spits them out the Bajorian wormhole and into very unfamiliar territory. They’re in the Mirror Universe all right, but this is the 24th Century version of the Mirror Universe, not the 23rd Century time frame from "Mirror, Mirror." Kira comes face to face with her Mirror self, Intendant Kira, who tells her all about how Spock became the leader of the Empire, and began "preaching reforms" and "peace."

This neatly parallels what Book says in "Mirrors," but now, we learn that some Terrans who believed in peace escaped on the I.S.S. Enterprise . While the DS9 future of the Mirror Universe was bleak for Terrans, we now learn that some survived, and even made it to the Prime Universe thanks to the Enterprise .

The Story of Another Wayward, Vintage Starship

The U.S.S. Defiant NCC-1764 next to the I.S.S. Enterprise in 'In A Mirror Darkly, Part 2'

"In A Mirror Darkly, Part 2"

The Constitution -class I.S.S. Enterprise 's journey from the Mirror Universe of the 23rd Century to the 32nd Century is also reminiscent of another TOS Mirror Universe starship crossover. Back in Discovery 's first season, the crew learns everything they need to know about the Mirror Universe thanks to information about the U.S.S. Defiant , a ship, which like the I.S.S. Enterprise , eventually moved across universes and time, as well.

In the 1968 Original Series episode " The Tholian Web ," the U.S.S. Defiant vanishes, only to reappear in the 2005 Enterprise two-parter, " In a Mirror, Darkly ." As Burnham puts it in "Despite Yourself," this journey is unorthodox, "Data suggests that in the future, the Defiant will encounter a phenomenon that'll bring it into this alternative universe's past." This means that not only did the Defiant cross universes, but time-traveled too, from the 23rd Century setting of The Original Series , to the 22nd Century setting of Star Trek: Enterprise .

The I.S.S. Enterprise didn't travel from the 23rd century Mirror Universe straight to the 32nd century Prime Universe. As we learned in Discovery 's third season, crossing over directly between these universes at this point in time is impossible. But, it did crossover sometime before the end of the 24th Century; one of the mysterious 24th Century scientists, Dr. Cho, was Terran. And, that detail, brings the journey of the I.S.S. Enterprise , all the way back to the story of Discovery .

Discovery 's Hopeful Mirror Universe Tale

Book reads the I.S.S. Enterprise plaque in 'Mirrors'

Book reads the journey of the I.S.S. Enterprise to Burnham, mentioning that this crew escaped all thanks to the help of a "Keplian slave turned rebel leader." Instantly, Book and Burnham know this can only mean "Action Saru" himself, from the Mirror Universe.

This detail ties into Season 3's two-parter, " Terra Firma ," in which Georgiou re-entered the Mirror Universe in the 23rd Century, at a point in time prior to Burnham's crossover in Season 1. But, in this version of the Mirror Universe, Georgiou, like Mirror Spock, tried to affect some positive change, which had dire consequences for her. But, at the same time, in this Mirror Universe, Georgiou had also freed Saru, and we did see him leading a rebellion toward the end of the episode. As the Guardian of Forever told Georgiou in " Terra Firma, Part 2 ," her actions in at least one version of the Mirror Universe had a big, positive impact, "You saved a Kelpien. And you didn't have to do that. And he'll save others. A lot of them."

So, thanks to Georgiou, Mirror Spock, and Action Saru, the story of the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Discovery 's final season has become an optimistic one. Like the idealistic Terran rebels in Deep Space Nine 's " Through the Looking Glass ," not all stories about the darkest dimension in Star Trek have to end in despair. And thanks to crossover between dimensions, the I.S.S. Enterprise has now become a beacon of hope in not one universe, but two.
