I've played this game since it was first released. It is by far my favorite computer game. However, I do have a problem with it. It has been so long since I've played it that I've completely forgotten HOW to play. I would really appreciate learning how to do so, again! Thanks.

This is one of my favorite games of all time. Playing it continuously since release. I bought it several times and still enjoy it like the first. Only of course now I know more about it. :) It's an 4X strategy game with turn based battles where you give the orders and watch them follow them. Outside of the battle engine, there is a classic 4X 2D map of the "galaxy". The size and number of systems isn't as big as some other games, but it is still good. Several ways to play the game, map size, victory conditions, playable factions, random events on or off. Also there is always the chance of Borg, unless you switch the random events off, or you keep random events on but edit the ini to turn the borg off. I love this game. I had/have 100s of videos on my main now inactive YouTube channel (guess the name of it), but I have started new channels and one of them has to do strategy games, I recently started playing a let's play of this one, playing as the Klingon. You can have a look here if you want. @TrusteftStrategy https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbn9mGcEdDeeZB2L8n0B86Q

Hmm, I'm an older person and I don't have any idea on how to use the download here, honestly. I downloaded it, extracted the files, and now I'm stumped. I just see two files, with an extension I know nothing about, on a computer with windows 10, and no idea how to get to sweet sweet BOTF action. Where could I find a step by step for dummies? Anyone know?

Thank Bahmumbra for the link. So i couldn't run either the installer or the game on win11, but the installer he linked actually runs on win11 (and definitely win10 therefore). It is big but it has several different options to run modded versions of the game. The best one is ultimate mod 5, it basically fixes all the games problems. It will give you options for resolution to install, but for decent size and the older videos in the game, best to run it on 1024x resolution eve4n if your monitor is 1920x1080. The mod adds lots of ships, and it adds the dominion and other races to the game. I have actually tried the other 2 botf like games being actively developed by fans but this ultimade mod 5 is better than either of them right now.

Worked on linux .. create a 32 bit WINEPREFIX set to Windows95. mdf2iso the stbofed.mdf file and mount the resulting ISO. Install the game and patch in the WINEPREFIX and like SMIRK said, run "ustrek.exe" not the NOCD crack.

@KLIGONS4LYFE When trying to get old games like this to work, in general, try using a virtual machine running an older OS or DOSBox.

GamerEd 2020-07-06 4 points

For most of these games I am running them on Windows XP 64 in an Oracle VirtualBox. They run great!

I got it to work with the patch and clicking on the ustrek.exe file. Only issue is that the reaction time to the mouse is painfully slow...

There are still sites like armadafleetcommand who have mods and tweaks for the game.

Hi.... I need to know how to run on Android with Exagear....... I have the ISO Extractor, it works with MDF. I used cracked version to make it stop saying "NO CD-ROM FILE FOUND!" I think I did it right....... But to be sure..... How DO you do it?

So I have the original disk for the game, but it lags like CRAZY on my Windows 10 PC. Any advice as to how to make it work? I haven't really been a PC game guy since the early 2000's so I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Got it to launch, but as soon as i went into options or start a new game, the game crashes. I installed using daemon tools lite, then update, then copied cracked file and renamed to trek.exe. Messed with compatibility but no go unfortunately, i think ill stick with Distant Worlds w/ Star Trek Mod thanks.

Endy 2018-10-29 0 point

I've tried burning this to an actual disk in Alcohol 120% format, and I tried converting MDF to ISO. It installed fine, but didn't run. I tried running the game using the 1.02 patch, didn't didn't run. Tried using the NOCD crack included. No dice. I've tried running it under both XP SP3 compatibility mode and 98/Me compatibility. Any clues on how to get this running?

Fictionmate 2018-06-11 -1 point

First of all: I love ancient games, old and a little dusty looking games with outdated graphics but a lot of long term gaming fun. I wanted to try this one but the game wont start. I get different feedback after clicking on of three existing exes after extracting and installing (Trek.exe, TREK, ustrek) either I receive "please put the correct cd-rom into the drive" or "mss32.dll is missing, reinstall the game might fix that problem". Trying to install the patch gets me the feedback to "first install the main game before patching it" - allthough both are in the same folder. End of the line: I can't play the game. Any suggestions or help available? I tried it regularly (win7) as well as in the XP-mode. Results are identical.... :-(((

@peace: MDF / MDS is another format for ISO images. Do some research please.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Birth of the Federation is a 4X turn-based strategy game most similar to Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares . Players choose one of five major races: Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian or Ferengi, and expand their territory through diplomatic relations with minor races and colonizing new planets, as well as upgrade infrastructure and ships, spy on and fight other players, handle random events such as Borg incursions, and research new technologies.

One of the best StarTrek games ever made

The Good This game has provided many many hours of fun and enjoyment. Both Single Player and Multi Player.

Turn based stratagy game, can choose between 5 races. Great Mods available on the net. The Bad A little buggy and no one had made a sequel YET. The Bottom Line If your a Star Trek fan & like to use your head, and are fed up with mindless shooters, try BOTF.

One of my favorite games and I have spent more time playing it than any other game. Lots of replay value.

Windows · by Tony Montana (1) · 2003

Far too complicated!

The Good I wish there was some way to scale this game back. I really enjoyed some elements of it: building armadas and defending my territories was great, opening diplomatic relations with new species was interesting. However, making sure the people on one planet were entertained wasn't.

This game would have worked if the scope were limited. Every aspect of the game looked good, sounded good, and played well, but having to deal with incredible amounts of minutiae every turn really bogged the game down.

But I will complain more later.

I really liked the interface. The interface resembled the computers used by the various species in ST:TNG so the Federation interfaced looked like the Enterprise computer's, etc. The sounds were great, ranging from familiar beeps and whistles to the thunderous impact of a proton(photon?) torpedo. I also like how you could adjust the parameters of gameplay as far as how much of the galaxy you had to control. The Bad Remember Star Wars: Rebellion ? The controls of BOTF are better (infinitely better) but BOTF could have improved by lessening its scope, or by offering some level of automation.

The game was turn based which isn't terrible, but later turns (80+) had incredibly long load times.

There was also a fundamental problem in BOTF commented on by another reviewer, the Next Generation universe was a poor choice for this style of game. Within this time period, you already know too much about the different species and technologies to make a first contact type game viable. This would have been feasible in the Enterprise universe (referring to the series), but it doesn't make sense to have ST:TNG level technology when you are just leaving the earth.

Also a cute randomizing factor (which you can toggle) allows the Borg and Doomsday devices to show up and destroy everything. Hmmm, great idea. The Bottom Line Light years beyond Star Wars: Rebellion but just as flawed. Actually does too good of a job on every aspect, resulting in slow, tedious gameplay.

The best Star Trek game I've ever played

The Good That's the game I dedicated at least 5 years of interrupted gaming, downloading last mods from various sites, messing with them, making my own..

The flavor , despite all its drawbacks, of this great game is that every major culture depicted here:Federation, Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians and Ferengi has some unique attributes which makes every game experience unique.

If you play with no races, you have to expand, while strengthening your army; if you do, Federation gets an unfair advantage due to diplomatic appealing to all races(except a few) , Romulans are good too.

But the greatest gift is that every major power can be associated in all its unique aspects with a civilization on Earth: United Federation of Planets is ..you guess who, the Klingon Empire is the Japanese Empire, the Cardassian Union is the Soviet Union, the Ferengi are the Israelis, and the Romulans , I can guess who...

Federation are good diplomats and make a lot of money from diplomatic relations, but their ships cannot be compared with the Romulan ones:)); they are also a bit skew when declaring war..always do nasty things to provoke a declaration of war.

Romulans are the most straight-forward when it's about war or peace, they have the greatest network of spies(the name :Phoenix is well given) , are also good in diplomacy with a few races, make little money and are the best in fleets, as their ships may cloak when needed, making surprise attacks a necessity.

Ferengi make the most money of all:just sign a peace treaty with them, and they'll know instantly the location of your worlds and set trade routes without yours or minor races permission; only war can prevent that. They also have the fastest ships, with the most numerous torpedoes

Cardassian are ruthless: always take advantage of weaker races and impose force labor upon them .For them, diplomacy is just words and their ships have the strongest hull of all, making planetary bombardment a nuisance(only hulls count there) .

Klingons are the best warriors: all their ships are armed with the most numerous beams, they like attacks in high number , but are also weak on rear part. their Diplomacy is rather good and may convince through unequitable statements minor races to join them (Vulcans like them, too!)

The diplomatic universe is dynamic: you can have the most loyal races being subdued through bribery or covert action to desert you and join the enemy the other round. Also, the peoples behavior representation is very good: Romulans are the most cheerful of all with regard to gov performance, but secretly wish a revolution (that's why they encourage revolutions on occupied planets), while the Federation guys are the most critical, especially in the newspapers:))

I can speak for hours about what a great simulation of the world we're living is this Star Trek Universe(remember it's history? first Klingons attack Federation, then they join them in the fight against Cardassians, they are defeated by the Borg...all history here)

The Borg invasion is very real: every system with more than 200 people gives birth to a new cube, every system below to a sphere (yes ,they have too! they are called:Borg Scouts).Fortunately , every turn only half of the system pop is wiped out (or kidnapped) , until the 10-mark is reached The Bad Well, it's an old game(stating the obvious:(() -the graphics are silly(not in the combat area), you have few options, the galaxy is so small, you have to colonize at least 60 % in order to win(or kill anyone else), most systems are so small they are useless

And the biggest problem is the excessive micromanagement: you have to give building order to all 40 systems you control each turn(that's a real headache). Speeds are limited to int numbers(so if you have a fleet of Warbirds flying at 1 square per turn and a few Battlecruisers flying at 2..all thing moves at 1)

Fortunately, if you download the real trek mod and combine it with the planet mod and the buildings taken from the ultimate mod, you'll get an interesting game, who can keep you day and night in front of your screen: that's because systems are big(even 500 people systems are common) , small ships are 20-30 times cheaper than big ones(destroyers vs cruisers) , which gives alternatives in the case of small systems(be careful , though:one Romulan cruiser wiped out 74 Ferengi scouts and destroyers in just 2 turns!!) and, of course, you have that lovely +1000 intel buildings(and others similar in effects)

Happy Romulan domination! (I only play these guys..matter of ..birth) The Bottom Line A great simulation of the world today, gives many testing options and it's so funny!(when you know what you're looking at)

The game strictly had a license for using races and ships from Star Trek: The Next Generation , but not the other shows of the franchise which partially overlapped in the in-universe timeline. This is why, for example, the Trill race used their TNG look instead of their better-known one from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . One exception is the Federation Defiant-class ship which debuted in DS9 , and appears in this game due to a loophole as it was present in the 1996 TNG film Star Trek: First Contact .

A Macintosh port was announced by MacSoft in July 1998, but was ultimately not released.

The player controls the facilities and fleets of one of five galactic powers: the United Federation of Planets ( which only has human colonists even if other species join ), the Klingon Empire , the Romulan Star Empire, the Ferengi Alliance , and the Cardassian Union. Players can persuade "minor races" - some of the many alien species seen in ST:TNG - to join their empire through diplomacy, or can conquer them by force.

Birth of the Federation contains examples of:

  • Alliance Meter : You have these with minor races you encounter. The meter determines what treaties you'll be able to make with them and how they respond to your requests. The Mizarians will actually give up and join you if you threaten them , but most have to be treated nicely and given lots of gifts to join. Some races are more likely to join like-minded empires. For example, warrior races (Acamarians, Andorians, Angosians, Anticans, Chalnoth, Nausicaans, Selay, and Talarians) are more likely to join the Klingons due to similar philosophies.
  • The arrangements and names of stars and planets are randomly generated and, except for the home system names and the names of Sol's planets, have no relationship to Star Trek canon or to reality.
  • An interesting inversion. Since Cardassia Prime is canonically the second planet in the system, the structure of the Cardassia system in-game is a little odd, since the planetary order starts with Cardassia II, continues with Cardassia Prime, and then resumes the normal numerical order.
  • Andorians and Vulcans are separate minor powers rather than founding members of the Federation. Tellarites are nowhere to be found.
  • Only the USS Defiant prototype actually had a cloaking device, because it was loaned to the United Federation of Planets by the Romulans in return for guarantees that it would only be used in the Gamma Quadrant and only if all intelligence on the Dominion were supplied to the Romulan Empire, since the Federation building their own cloaking devices would be a violation of the treaty between them and the Romulans. The cloaking device was destroyed with the ship in the Second Battle of Chin'toka. None of the other Defiant class ships you build would have a cloaking device.
  • Colony Ship : Naturally. Used to settle habitable worlds. All colony ships, except Klingon ones, are unarmed. In fact, Klingons don't have unarmed ships.
  • Confusion Fu : According to the Romulan intro video, this is their way to victory: "Misdirection is the key to survival. Never attack what your enemy defends, never behave as your enemy expects, and never reveal your true strengths. If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable."
  • Extra Turn : The effect of an Invisibility Cloak in battle. If both sides have only cloaked ships, the effect is negated.
  • Fog of War : Ships and planets have sensors with limited ranges. It is impossible to see what enemy ships are doing beyond those ranges.
  • Good Is Not Soft : While the Federation intro emphasizes the importance of diplomacy, it does point out that the Federation ships are meant to end wars, while showcasing the Galaxy class.
  • Hyperspeed Escape : Ships are capable of fleeing battles, although they have to survive a battle turn first.
  • Infinity +1 Sword : Defiant -class heavy escorts are the most powerful buildable ships in the game. A single Defiant is capable of wiping out a whole enemy fleet, especially since it's capable of cloaking, granting it an Extra Turn at the start of the battle (unless the enemy also has cloaked ships). Only the Federation can build heavy escorts, which means that they have an unfair advantage, which may be slightly balanced by the fact that they're, generally, the most difficult faction to play. And they have the highest tech requirements to unlock, meaning they're only available late in the game.
  • Invisibility Cloak : All Romulan ships, some Klingon ships, and the Defiant have cloaking devices, which have an effect on both strategy and battle. Ships with engaged cloaking devices are invisible on the strategic screen and can only be attacked by sheer chance (i.e. if your fleet happens to enter the same cell as a cloaked fleet). In battle, the cloaking device (provided it's been engaged before the battle) grants an Extra Turn at the start of combat, which can often be the final turn. It can be either used to do serious damage to the enemy without retaliation or flee the battle without being fired upon. Since all Romulan ships can become invisible, the game balances them out by making their ships extremely slow on the galactic map.
  • The Ferengi economic victory cutscene states that, with this galaxy's market cornered, it's time to look towards other galaxies, quoting Rule of Acquisition #242: "More is good. All is better."
  • One of the Romulan victories plays this straight. They recognize that there are other galaxies, but, being isolationists, they're perfectly satisfied with staying in this one.
  • Morale Mechanic : Every system in your empire has a morale meter. It drops when the place is conquered, treaties are broken, or the military's ships suffer a defeat (which works even for systems that have been recently conquered, which is like the French liking German occupation more in 1941 after hearing about German victories note  This could be because they conclude that their conquerors are going to win and decide that resistance is futile. ). Ship victories increase morale. Other factors depend on the race: Klingon morale increases with declarations of war and news of planetary bombardments of enemies, and decreases with peace treaties; the reverse is true for the Federation. The Romulans in particular seem to like most things, which is evidenced by the fact that both war and peace declarations increase morale. Each faction has a repeatable project that can be built in a system to try to improve morale. Surprisingly, the Ferengi project (Festival of Fun) is the only one that doesn't reek of tyranny, while all the others involve oppression: Martial Law (Federation, yes, Federation), Police State (Klingons), Tribunal (Romulans), and Inquisition (Cardassians).
  • No Quarter : Ships in combat never surrender or try to persuade other ships to do so, although this may not be the case when capturing systems. There is no option for an empire to surrender to another, and they all always fight to the bitter end. The exception is when the player's empire (either individually or as part of an alliance) controls the majority of the galaxy where the victory condition is domination- the player has the option of either accepting their enemies' surrender or crushing them.
  • Defiant -class ships may be small (although not as small as on TV ), but they pack heavy firepower. Plus, their cloaking device gives them an Extra Turn against non-cloaked ships, which can frequently end the fight before it even starts .
  • From a strategic viewpoint, minor races whose star systems have dilithium deposits tend to have warships of their own, which can be quire powerful for someone the size of a single system. In general, they tend to be too tough to beat until about mid-game. Getting them to ally with you instead of conquering them also give you their ships, although you can't build them.
  • Planet of Hats : Averted in that production in a star system only changes based on morale, not the in-show characteristics of the race that it belongs to (might be worth a mod, if anyone's up to that).
  • Proud Merchant Race : The Ferengi view everything from a financial viewpoint. Their intro and ending videos all quote their Rules of Acquisition.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy : As expected, the Klingons are this. Even their intro tells the player to never leave the Empire without an enemy, even when making temporary alliances. Klingons can also get along with minor warlike races better than others, including the Nausicaans and the Chalnoth. Klingon Intro: If a Klingon does not fight, he does not breathe! Make allies if you must, but never leave the Empire without an enemy. Klingons are born to fight and conquer! A true leader will never forget this.
  • Ramming Always Works : While ramming is a valid tactic during battles, it's usually pointless, since a tiny ship can only do damage up to a maximum of its HP, and a big ship can just use its weapons to blast the smaller one.
  • Random Number God : If the Borg happen to spawn near your space early in the game, you might as well start a new game. By tweaking one of the game files it's possible to remove the appearance of the Borg as one of the random events, given the AI's total inability to deal with a Borg invasion.
  • Reluctant Warrior : The Federation's hat is diplomacy. Therefore, war tends to hurt Federation planet morale. However, as the Fed intro states, their ships are intended "not to start fights, but to end them." Add to that that the Federation possesses the most powerful buildable ship type in the game...
  • Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale : Even the "large" galaxy has only a hundred or so stars. There are no binary or trinary star systems anywhere, and almost every star has planets in stable orbits. Red giants will go supernova during the game if random events are turned on, despite the fact that star life spans are on the order of billions of years and it's insanely unlikely that they would happen to explode during a given interval of a thousand. The list goes on.
  • Single-Biome Planet : Every planet that isn't a gas giant is one of these, even after terraforming to enable them to be colonised.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill : If too many bombardment ships are used against a system while you land troops, you'll destroy the colony there and leave nothing to occupy. Nonetheless, one troop transport is always used up if landings are successful (and they're all destroyed if they aren't).
  • 2-D Space : In the strategic picture, so that every star in the galaxy is aligned along a very narrow plane. The third dimension can be and is used in tactical combat.
  • If the Cardassian intro is to be believed, this is their hat . Control is the only thing that matters. Methods are not important. Efficiency is what counts in the end. Exploit what you conquer, for in the struggle for survival, every resource is critical. History is written by the victors .
  • Surprisingly, the Ferengi intro has a similar point, even if it is more economically-centered. Rule of Acquisition #58: There is no substitute for success. It does not matter how success is achieved. Superior numbers are just as effective as superior technology. When all is said and done, any victory is better than any defeat.
  • We Have Reserves : According to Ferengi intro, this is a perfectly viable way to win, if you don't have the technological edge. In the end, all that matters is success.
  • We Win, Because You Didn't : If the Borg invade before anyone has the technology to stop them, your best strategy is to try to survive a little longer than anyone else: that meets the criteria for being more powerful than the other empires and gives you the win. The Rubicun system is perfect for this because the Borg are unwilling to attack the Edo Guardian.
  • Written by the Winners : The Cardassian intro states this almost word-for-word. The speech itself points out that the methods to achieve victory don't matter, only the efficiency.

Anyone still play Birth of the Federation?

Discussion in ' Trek Gaming ' started by HelenofBorg , Sep 4, 2019 .

I still do sometimes, usually I have the most success playing as Ferengi or Federation. For some reason I am rubbish at playing as Klingon, and not exactly brilliant as either Cardassian or Romulan.
Oops, should this have been posted to trek gaming instead? Sorry mods, you might want to move my thread if this was the wrong place. I only just realized that there was a specific forum for star trek games.

This was always a favourite game of mine, I don't have a lot of time for it anymore but I still enjoy it. I used to play as the Romulans as their people seemed to forgive you whatever you did, war or peace, and their ships were very powerful and had cloaks. I played Federation a fair bit too but it always annoyed me how shitty your people got if you did certain things (declare war, bomb planets, etc). Get in line, minions.

Haven't played it in a long time. I had a copy on an older machine that I use to have. Had lots of fun playing that game. Now, I play other space 4X games. Pity that fan made sequel never happened.

Grendelsbayne

I still have this one and probably will play it again at some point. The last time I pulled it out must be a couple of years ago by now, though. I've played all the different races quite a bit, but I usually wind up going for the Romulans. I think the Romulans and the Ferengi are definitely the easiest races to play. The Ferengi have a weaker military, but it's not too bad, and their economic/diplomatic advantage with the trade routes is massive. The Romulans are the only real Jack of all Trades option who aren't super amazing at anything but also aren't at all bad at anything, and they get the cloaking devices to boot so you never have to lose a ship to an unavoidable battle. By comparison, the Federation diplomatic advantage is ok, not great, and their scientific advantage only matters in a *really* long game (but I do love the Heavy Escorts when a game lasts long enough to bring them out). Meanwhile, their 'morality' outlook is incredibly frustrating. I remember one game where one of the minor races (I think Talarians, but I'm not sure) who I had done absolutely nothing to just kept attacking me out of nowhere. Their ships would be destroyed in self-defense and I would immediately ask for a peace treaty and still everyone was constantly whining about the 'war'. After like the fifth time they unilaterally declared war for no reason, I captured the planet and put a stop to it, and people rioted in response. It was utterly ridiculous. Then there's the Cardassians who basically feel like the game's built-in 'hard mode'. Not really great at anything and also you have to start at like three steps lower down the technological chain than everyone else. But the Klingons are unquestionably the worst option in the game. Their 'morality' stuff can be almost as bad as the Federation since they'll sometimes start rioting just because you made peace with someone. And that Dilithium deficiency is an absolute killer. If you don't get lucky enough to have at least 2/3 new dilithium rich systems near enough to colonize/conquer in the early game you're forced to spend the entire game struggling to keep any fleet in the air at all.

Doctor Bombay

I haven't played that game in maybe 15 years, but I recall the Romulans being the most fun to play as well.

The Borg were a major pain in the arse. I saw them wipe out most of the galaxy's population in several games and they strip bare the planets they conquer. I always wondered what would happen if they took on the Edo guardian at Rubicun III.

I think I destroyed the Edo guardian once with a fleet of 10 Defiant-class starships, just for a lark, but I might be imagining that.
10 might be an iffy number, I think, but I generally found that 15-20 Defiants could kill just about anything with ease, including a Borg cube. Really 20 of any of the most powerful ships would usually do the job, but the Defiants had better survival rates.
The Borg could really screw you over if you hadn't invested strongly enough in researching the right areas. If they showed up too early - game over, man (or Ferengi/Romulan/Klingon/Cardassian...). The game could do with a 20-year anniversary revival - perhaps with the option of a galaxy map more like the series and the addition of the Kazon, Founders, Doomsday weapon etc. However, it's not really the sort of game that's likely to be in vogue again. Successors to Master of Orion 1 and 2 (on which BotF was based) were more than a bit pants anyway in my opinion. I know there are Star Trek mods to some of the galactic civ games but for some reason, I always preferred BotF (and MoO2).

Maybe time to revisit it, due to this thread?
There are some great BotF mods out there, to the extent I rarely play the base game anymore. Ultimate Dominion War Mod is a personal favourite (lots of gameplay and visual mods, the Ferengi replaced with the Dominion, and the option for a fuck-off massive map), but there are also Klingon Civil War (there are two playable Klingon races of different houses), Borg Invasion ( lots of cubes), and a Balance of Power mod that just tweaked the base game to make the empires more equal. If anyone is interested, there is an All in One installer for modern systems (base game and all the stable mods) here . It's now Abandonware, so there's no piracy involved.

I've seen videos of the game but never played it myself. Am more of an Armada I/II kind of guy. The gameplay reminds me of Stellaris . Lots of micro-managing.

Akiraprise

Akiraprise To Ꝏ & Somewhere..! Moderator

I've never played it either. I was also an Armada / Bridge Commander guy. I'll also move this to Trek Gaming.
I just wish that a game existed which was similar, with a much larger map, and incorporating all known races, including the delta quadrant ones. In addition to the usual playable empires, there should be Dominion, Borg, and Kazon. Instead of random events being a borg cube, it could be a prank played by Q or something like that, and the outcome of prank could be either good or bad. Just a thought.
I don't know how you have a playable Borg collective that doesn't automatically run rampant over every other species, though. Unless you're literally forced to build only one ship at a time or something.

Felderburg

Felderburg Lieutenant Junior Grade Red Shirt

I absolutely love Birth of the Federation! The one problem is the memory leak issue, which hadn't been fixed last time I downloaded the modern installer (or maybe I installed it wrong?). When I played when I was younger, I would usually start myself at a higher level than the enemies... I should try again and actually start on a level playing field.

One of my favourite Trek games! I played this so many times over the years, and I last fired it up earlier this year. It still somehow loads on my crappy-ass laptop. I remember liking the Federation, Cardassians and Klingons the most when I played. I also enjoyed playing the Dominion mod with the Ferengi replaced by the Dominion. The Borg really used to throw a spanner in the works.

10 Games That'll Make You Feel Like You've Enlisted in Starfleet

We've got your most fully immersive 'Star Trek' experiences right here.

cover001

StarTrek.com

Star Trek is a universe full of seemingly never-ending potential. While you can spend time poring through the neverending creative output the Trek fandom produces — or even writing some fanfiction yourself — another great outlet for feeling like a part of the Star Trek universe is through its games. And wow, are there a lot of games out there. Not all the games out there are quite as successful as you'd like them to be, however many capture the spirit of the show and movies wonderfully well. At their best, these games make you feel part of the Star Trek universe in some small part, while still being highly enjoyable titles in their own right. We've gathered ten of those games, covering all the different parts of Star Trek to cater for every taste.

Star Trek Online

STO

The massively multiplayer online role playing genre is the perfect choice for a Star Trek game. What could be better than a persistent universe that you can inhabit and choose to explore strange new worlds all of your own? The launch of Star Trek Online was a little rocky with early reports of it being buggy and repetitive, but time and regular updates have been very kind to it. You can easily pass away dozens of hours exploring the universe, getting involved in new storylines, and mostly doing anything that feels right to you. There are plenty of great cameos from some of your favorite characters including those from the Original Series, The Next Generation , and Voyager !

Star Trek: Elite Force

ST:EF

Given the generally peaceful nature of Starfleet, the first person shooter nature of Star Trek: Elite Force might seem oddly jarring at first, but it makes sense in the long run. Made by Raven Software, best known for its violent Soldier of Fortune series, Star Trek: Elite Force still managed to feel suitably Star Trek -esque thanks to its focus on fending off the Borg. You play as Ensign Alex Munro, a member of the Hazard Team — a specialist elite security force that's been tasked with dealing with dangerous away missions. The U.S.S. Voyager has been trapped in a starship graveyard so it's down to you to free it and protect it from hostile factions including the Borg and the Klingons. While it lacks the peacekeeping nature of many Star Trek tales, Elite Force does a great job of making you feel part of an away team, highlighting a different part of Starfleet life. A sequel, Star Trek: Elite Force II , was almost just as good too.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

ST: BC

Star Trek: Bridge Crew doesn't have the greatest of depth to its gameplay, but who can resist being part of a crew via virtual reality? Played through four roles including the captain, tactical officer, engineer, and helm officer, each character template has a part to play. The captain is the one responsible for communicating mission objectives, while the helm officer controls the ship's course, the tactical officer deals with sensors and weaponry, and the engineer keeps a close eye on power distribution and repairs. It's a neat form of teamwork for those wearing the VR sets and one that's immediately appealing to those who have wanted to helm their own starship. After a time, you'll realise that the experience is a little bit samey and repetitive, but with the right group of friends, it's tough to resist all the same.

Star Trek The Next Generation: A Final Unity

ST: AFU

Capturing the spirit and general feel of The Next Generation near perfectly, A Final Unity is easily one of the best Star Trek games out there, even 25 years after its initial release. Players control Captain Picard and the rest of the TGN crew in a mixture of point and click adventure, puzzle solving, and away team missions. There's room too for ship based combat as well as thinking how best to deal with issues diplomatically. Such a mixture of different elements is much of why A Final Unity feels like a 'true' Star Trek game. You can search various star systems, get to know the locals, while also choosing how best to deal with complicated situations. You're sure to enjoy feeling a true part of the Star Trek universe, even if the story is rather linear by modern standards.

Star Trek: Starfleet Command III

ST: SFC

Much of Star Trek involves diplomacy and keen use of strategy. While Star Trek: Starfleet Command III skips the diplomacy, it has strategy to a tee. Placing you in the captain's chair, the game was intended to tie into Star Trek: Nemesis . That captain's chair isn't necessarily Starfleet based either, with the opportunity to be part of the Klingon Empire, as well as the Romulan Empire, and the Federation. It's a varied bunch of storylines which shows different perspectives admirably well. Combat can be a little hardcore as you figure out the best tactics to utilize, but there are good tutorials for guiding you through the paces. Customizing your ship as well as knowing what weapons to use and when is key here, in this combat focused strategy game.

Star Trek: Bridge Commander

ST:BC

Star Trek: Bridge Commander offers some cameos from beloved characters like Captain Picard and Commander Data but, for the most part, it's an individual story within the Star Trek universe. It revolves around a newly promoted captain who's been assigned to investigate an explosion of a star. You take command of the U.S.S. Dauntless as well as the U.S.S. Sovereign . The game is focused on ship based combat, much like Starfleet Command III, but it's a bit more accessible making it ideal for everyone who simply wants to feel in control of a Federation ship. You can interact with members of the bridge crew before opting to take the lead via the combat simulation screen. It's an older game but one that's aged well, providing some great combat sequences that make you feel truly part of something bigger than yourself.

Star Trek: Trexels II

ST:TII

A lot of Star Trek games are reasonably serious. Star Trek: Trexels II isn't one of those games. Instead, it's gloriously casual friendly in nature. You take command of a federation ship before embarking on some fairly lightweight missions as you collect up all your favorite characters and build upon your ship's success. Predictably, Star Trek: Trexels II is a mobile game that's free to play with options to buy extra content. It's the ideal game to dip into during a break from work as you can complete a mission in the space of a few minutes. It uses characters from all of the Star Trek universe and it's delightfully charming at times, even if it is very simple. If you're not a huge gamer but you're keen to try, this is the game for you.

Star Trek Legacy

ST:L

Another strategy game but one that was available for consoles as well as PCs, Star Trek Legacy offered you the chance to control various different Federation starships across different eras in Star Trek history. How could you resist such variety? Those eras include the Enterprise era, Original Series , and Next Generation , with elements of Deep Space Nin e and Voyager . Admittedly, the game didn't review hugely well due to some issues with its control system, but we reckon it's still well worth any Star Trek fan's time. Being able to control such iconic ships as well as take part in reworked Starfleet history is gripping stuff, and it's enjoyable working through the storylines that unfold. Extensive voice work from all your favorite captains enriches the experience further.

Star Trek: Judgment Rites

ST:JR

The oldest game here, Star Trek: Judgment Rites features the Original Series cast in a series of episodic adventures. You control Captain Kirk as you talk it out with Spock, McCoy and the rest of the crew, before embarking on away team missions that can spark some combat sequences along the way. Part adventure, part action, it's a great way of feeling part of The Original Series and far too few games embrace the original days of Star Trek in such a way. The full principal cast is included here and it also features the last time that DeForest Kelley plays McCoy. Best of all, each episodic story is suitably entertaining and captures the spirit of The Original Series well. It may be tricky to track down nowadays but it's a worthwhile endeavor.

Star Trek: Birth of the Federation

ST:BotF

A tough but rewarding strategy game, Star Trek: Birth of the Federation is a 4X turn-based strategy game - typically regarded as a more complex route than other games of this ilk. That means you're going to have to put some effort into learning it but if you're a fan of The Next Generation, it's worth it. The game was intended to tie-in with Star Trek: Insurrection with you taking control of one of five civilizations - Federation, Ferengi, Klingons, Romulans, or Cardassians. There's room too for thirty other races from Star Trek, each playing a more minor role along the way. There's a lot to take in as you establish diplomatic ties with other races, as well as work out how to extend your reach and what to do with new star systems, so Star Trek: Birth of the Federation can be very complex. However, stick with its steep learning curve and it's fantastic for making you feel truly part of the Star Trek atmosphere. Its attitude is perfectly in key with the diplomacy of The Next Generation.

STAR TREK FLEET COMMAND: 2024 ROADMAP PREVIEW

By gabriel 21 December 2023

Featured Image

Commanders,

Can you believe Star Trek Fleet Command has celebrated its 5th Anniversary?! As we wrap up the events around this milestone, we wanted to show how we recognized it with our community these last couple of months:

5th Year Anniversary Paramount Day:

  • Select players who won our lottery events received a special invite for a full Star Trek day at Paramount Studios and got a special screening of Star Trek: First Contact!

star trek botf ships

Borg PC Raffle:

  • We teamed up with CherryTree and created a logical and resistant Top-end PC which four lucky players won! Congrats!

Star Trek Legacy Reel:

  • Players were able to see a recap of their total career as a Star Trek Commander with the STFC Legacy Reel:

Now that the celebrations are behind us, it’s time to look forward and check what we have in store for 2024! As always, details are subject to change, as may the order and timing of their eventual releases.

Ionite Nebula”- Instanced PvP Universe

  • Wave Defence marked the start of a focus to deliver new, more dynamic, ways to play STFC that require knowledge, strategy and skill to succeed. For 2024, we are looking to add even more interesting and fun gameplay options for all of our players:
  • Imagine a new regional instanced universe, with a unique galaxy map where players from all servers enter to engage in structured, competitive PvP matches for a limited time.
  • Not intended to compete with Incursions (Server vs. Server PvP), this will provide a competitive gameplay mode for our PvP-inclined players. This mode will go beyond regular ship battles or raiding, and require players to achieve victory.
  • We aim to create some time window-limited cross-server events every month where players from multiple servers have the option to participate and discover who are truly the strongest Commanders..

Dynamic “Boss” Hostiles

  • Another new gameplay mechanic we are looking to add is a new type of cooperative activity that allows for more dynamic and collaborative gameplay and strategic choice for officers, ships, and active ship abilities.
  • Combat against these hostiles will play out in real-time and will allow for more participants in battle, for more location and dynamic actions, and for more specific ship roles in order to take down a massive enemy hostile.

star trek botf ships

Alliance Games

  • A new type of regional cross-server competitive event that will pit alliances against each other in a unique league system for big rewards.
  • We want to focus and add new options for alliances so they have a variety of collaborative tasks, promoting teamwork, competition, and strategic planning to engage against a group of other top alliances across our game.
  • Expect the feature and the first alliance league to arrive in Q2 of 2024.

Quality Focus rather than Quantity

A big focus for us in 2024 will be on quality , rather than quantity . We have just had a year packed with exciting content, events, and features. We released Fleet Commanders and Wave Defense, to mention just a couple. We are massively proud of the impact these have made inside the game, but we also feel that it’s important to recognize that we may have dropped the ball in other places. We are happy with the gameplay of Wave Defense as a feature but the performance and issues at launch fell below your expectations (and ours). Other features like Artifact Hall did not meet the quality bar we are striving for and we have since worked hard to remedy some of the issues (more to come for this in 2024).  For next year, we want to ensure that we release fewer but more exciting features so we can deliver the best kind of experience you all deserve.

We can and will do better.

Lastly, we will also do our best to engage with the recently created Player Council so we can get early player feedback on many of these features which will allow us to make changes and adjustments as we develop them.

A lot of work goes into these big features and we hope this direction will improve our game in a meaningful way that you will appreciate.

Another hot topic that comes to our attention often is our existing list of bugs in the game. We recognize that over 2023, the player experience has degraded with some of our more persistent annoying bugs plus performance issues. To that end, a big priority for us in 2024 will be to reduce our bug counts and release smoother releases each month.

2024 IP/Shows

We wanted to give you some insight on the cool Star Trek IP we plan to release next year:

  • It’s been a long road, getting from there to here… The remaining big IP from the main shows, yes, you guessed it, Enterprise is coming 🙂

As you can see from our sneak peek images below, we’re big fans of Enterprise, and plan to revisit some of its most popular story arcs and concepts. More on that later!

star trek botf ships

  • We plan to bring back a couple of shows that we have done in the past and examine different seasons and eras of them. Those may include Strange New Worlds, Deep Space Nine and The Original Series.
  • We are also planning a very special surprise for 2024 with a unique IP for one month, which we believe will get most of you excited (but we can’t reveal much yet…)

“Change is the essential process of all existence” – Spock

We hope you’ll be with us throughout 2024 as we add more content and features to Star Trek Fleet Command!

Ultimate Editor Basics

Ultimate Editor

Introduction

Ultimate Editor is a Java based program designed by DCER. UE will edit most values within Birth of the Federation.

This will be a basic tutorial to explain what file UE will edit and how to navigate though the program.

Java software is required before using Ultimate Editor, Java is a free application And can be found HERE

Java software is property of Sun Microsystems

getting started

English.snd/German.snd

Getting Started

After You have Java installed and up to date you can get started.

Create a new folder and Extract all files from the downloaded UE zip into new folder. New folder should look something like this after extraction;

star trek botf ships

Note; "UE.jar" may be shown as "UE" if system is set to not show known file extensions.

Double click on UE.jar to open UE interface.

Once open select file tab and then open.

Default path for UE is set for C:/botf and you should have window like this;

star trek botf ships

select stbof.res and open. You now have an open file (stbof.res) in UE ready to edit.

Return to index

With UE still open select edit tab and settings.

star trek botf ships

You may select language to be used by UE You may select type of font used by UE (not in game font)  The next 2 areas are set by default to this location. If a mod is loaded (stbof.res or trek.exe) the mod path will auto set to new path of mod files. You should never need to set this but if problem arise should be checked to see if paths matches and are correct. Select "Save snd (sound) descriptions to working directory" if you want a text file of sound description when files are edited and saved. Select "Check for Updates" if you want UE to check for if UE has been updated. Keep "Load secondary files" always checked . If uncheck, needed changes will not be made and game will be unstable. "Maximum number of backups" this can be your best friend select the number of backups you want to have. Just a warning each backup can be up to 100mb or more.

Open stbof.res with UE as shown before .

  10. What is a good starting build order for Star Trek: Birth of the Federation?

    2. BotF is one of the worst 3X games for the computer players running amok at higher difficulty levels. MOO2 has nothing on it. Because you don't get an automatic advantage for being able to design your own ships, you have to be very careful, and avoid war until you get decent tech and build up your fleet a bit.

  15. Anyone still play Birth of the Federation?

There are some great BotF mods out there, to the extent I rarely play the base game anymore. Ultimate Dominion War Mod is a personal favourite (lots of gameplay and visual mods, the Ferengi replaced with the Dominion, and the option for a fuck-off massive map), but there are also Klingon Civil War (there are two playable Klingon races of different houses), Borg Invasion (lots of cubes), and a ...

  19. Ships wont attack :: Star Trek: Infinite General Discussions

In BOTF cloaking ships were OP as they always got the first Salvo which could be a tremendous alpha strike. In this game you can't even tell whether your ships are cloaked or not. Would be cool if you could at least see your ships decloak before firing. Cloaked ships when undetected should allow you to decide when and where to engage.
