The Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir could be considered the nephews of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and excel at the isicathamiya, a capella singing South African way, a sound made world famous by Paul Simon through his album ‘Graceland’, which sold more than 16 million copies and won the 1987 Grammy for Album of the Year, and world tour.

The choir can be seen at Cape Town’s harbour, where they perform regularly at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. But you don’t need to book a flight to South Africa to hear them…

South African Road Trip: Good Hope | Review

South African Road Trip has been touring the world since 2006 presenting their “ swinging and exuberant musical experience, including uplifting songs, close harmony and invigorating dance and music ”.

The cast is led by eight men from the Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir and four female singers, with musical accompaniment by two marimba players, Mkokeli Moses Masala and Sabu Jiyana.

South African Road Trip - Photo by Roeltje van de Sande Bakhuysen.

In fact, it is these two players who are the undoubted highlight of Good Hope . In the second half of this 95-minute evening with no interval, they are allowed to play several solos and a duet and Masala especially proves to be a highly talented exponent of this rarely heard instrument – even if he plays it as if trying to batter it into submission. It is a shame that both players are not given more exposure.

The singers hail from the townships around Cape Town and are exponents of a type of South African a capella singing made famous, we are told, “ by Paul Simon through his album Graceland ” and which is called isicathamiya.

This song and dance show is certainly exuberant: two giant video screens (Stefan Hunter) form a backdrop onto which are projected scenes from life in the townships as well as scenes of the South African countryside, wild animals and interviews with the performers. In fact, at times one did not know where to look as the videos were constantly changing and quite hypnotic.

The traditional songs showcased in the show were mostly fairly similar to each other, being quite repetitive both rhythmically and melodically. Very occasionally there was a brief introduction to a number in English, but this was the exception rather than the rule. As there were video screens, it would have greatly added understanding and enjoyment if an English translation or at least a summary of each song could have been projected. It is very difficult to listen and watch a succession of very similar songs and dances for more than an hour and a half, having no idea what they are about!

Simple, again repetitive, well drilled and often effective choreography was by Silumko Koyana, the second part of the evening having superbly inventive costume designs by Dorien de Jonge. The overall director was Albert Klein Kranenburg.

The musical supervisor, presumably responsible for the simple yet effective musical arrangements, was Jeroen Sleyfer.

Road-Trip to the Cape of Good Hope: our essential stops

south african road trip good hope

Visiting the end of the world is possible in South Africa, in the literal sense of the word. The southernmost country in Africa is naturally home to the southernmost capes of the African continent – notably the most famous and the one that we no longer present: The Cape of Good Hope. The latter is accessible from the city of Cape Town through a road trip between oceans and mountains. In this article, I give you an idea of an itinerary in a few key steps. By car Simone.

south african road trip good hope

Our route through the Cape Peninsula

I suggest a loop route to see the most of this beautiful region of the Cape Peninsula from Cape Town, passing through Muizenberg, Boulders Beach to the Cape of Good Hope. Return by the other coast via Nordhooek, Hout Bay before reaching Cape Town again.

The circle is complete.

Departure from Cape Town

Aaaaah Cape Town, or the most beautiful city in the world. Entwined between the Atlantic Ocean and its mountains which gives it more volume, Cape Town is the most beautiful starting point of your adventure through the Cape Peninsula towards the ultimate goal: The Cape of Good Hope. Leave town early in the morning with: sunscreen, bottled water, your swimsuit (just in case) and a pair of sneakers ready to trek through Cape Peninsula National Park.

Most : As you leave town, say hello to Lion’s Head or Table Mountain. Let’s go for the adventure!

helicopter-flight-over-the-cape

1st stage in Muizenberg

You must have seen pictures of pretty colorful beach huts passing through the guidebooks in Cape Town or South Africa in general. They are comfortably installed in the warm sands of Muizenberg beach, a surfers’ paradise in the Cape region. Stroll on the seafront between small restaurants, surf schools and white sand beach. Watch the surfers in action or take lessons yourself to tame the waves for which South Africa is famous.

Most : visit the “Shark Watch”, it is in this room on the beach that a team ensures on a daily basis that no sharks wander in the area.

Photo of the beach cabins from the article "Road Trip to the Cape of Good Hope"

2nd stage: breakfast at Kalk Bay

I love Kalk Bay for its old railway line, for seeing trains pass by along the ocean and for its atmosphere of a small South African fishing village. But if you want to know the truth, and nothing but the truth: I also like Kalk Bay for its unbeatable restaurant and tapas bar Cape to Cuba . Here in a Cabinet of Curiosity-type setting between the scents of Cuban cigars and sea spray, you can try the best mojitos of the Cape Peninsula! If too early in the morning, order a snack and a cappuccino, that works too.

Most : the part of the restaurant with your feet in the sand.

Photo of the beach cabins from the article "Road Trip to the Cape of Good Hope"

3rd stage: Meeting of the Cape penguins

Boulders Beach is an absolute must-see on your road trip through the Cape Peninsula. It is here that the colony unique in the world of the Cape penguins settled. Who would have thought that these thick-skinned animals to brave the cold polar temperatures would have come to settle in this sunny country that is South Africa ? Rare and endangered, these precious animals are now protected within the confines of a nature reserve. To access it and admire the penguins up close you will have to pay a conservation fee of around R80 per adult.

Most : ideal stopover to discover more about the conservation of endangered species and the Cape penguin colony.

Photo of the penguins from the article "Road Trip to the Cape of Good Hope"

4th stage: The Cape of Good Hope!

After visiting the penguins, continue your journey south until you reach the gateways to Cape Point Nature Reserve, more broadly part of Table Mountain National Park. Here pay conservation fees for you and your vehicle again and drive through untouched nature – while driving extremely smoothly! – where you will meet ostriches, antelopes and other animals living freely. The decor of these lunar and enchanting landscapes will accompany you to the Holy Grail: the Cape of Good Hope! Next door is also “Cape Point” another emblematic cape of the continent. Climb its summit to admire the view using the funicular or on foot. For the more adventurous, it is possible to do a few hikes from Cape Point by following the marked trails.

Most : Go up to the lighthouse at the very top and try to point to Antarctica. Challenge accepted ?

Family itinerary in Cape Town

5th stage: Noordhoek

Leave the end of the world to slowly return to the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. The return is a real delight when you take the other coastline through Kommetjie, Noordhoek, Hout Bay and Llanduno. Noordhoek is best known for its coastline and its stunning beach that stretches for miles to the nearby village of Kommetjie, which you will already have passed on your way. Here, stop at the viewpoints allowing you to gain height to admire the remarkable white sand beach of Noordhoek.

Most : You are at the entrance to the Chapman’s Peak Panoramic Route: the grand finale and must-see of your road-trip day.

south african road trip good hope

6th stage: Chapman’s Peak

I still remember the first time I walked through Chapman’s Peak. It was four years ago but I still remember every moment. Surely because Chapman’s Peak is not just any road you take to get home. It is one of the most beautiful scenic roads in the world, carved into the mountainside that it crisscrosses while offering endless ocean views. It is so beautiful that it is simply insolent. You could never get tired of it as I could never forget it.

Most : If your timing is right you should take Chapman’s Peak around sunset time with a rainbow of pink and orange.

south african road trip good hope

7th stage: Llandudno

Here too, a small paradise for Cape Town surfers, it is also a magnificent beach sheltered from the wind because it is protected in the preserved bay. Between luxury houses, small bungalows facing the sea and the last rays of sun on the ocean: we make it difficult to choose which stage will be your favorite. Llanduno is a beautiful end of your unforgettable road trip through the Cape Peninsula.

Most : Think before you go to take crackers, sancks and why by a bottle of South African wine to taste with your feet in the sand.

South African Road Trip: Good Hope

Bos Theaterproducties Amsterdam Peacock Theatre 25 – 30 October 2022

south african road trip good hope

This invigorating musical revue showcases the multiple talents of the Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir, an a cappella group who sing in the distinctive South African style called isicathamiya with its focus on harmony and choreographed dance moves.

The choir first began singing together in 1991 in Indiovini, a district of Khayelitsha a township on the outskirts of Cape Town and probably the largest in South Africa. Dutch producer Inge Bos first heard them there in 2006 and since has presented them in concert, cast them in her musical production Amandla! Mandela and mounted two previous version of Road Trip .

In this third incarnation, playing an all too short visit to London, they are joined by four female singers and a pair of exceptional percussionists on drums and marimbas.

Good Hope offers a non-stop, 95-minute celebration. Although the songs are largely sung in their own language, Xhosa, with only occasional brief English explanations of what they are about, not knowing what the words mean doesn’t seem to matter because you are caught up in the sound, the colourful costumes and the movement.

The songs start by remembering the ending of apartheid and celebrating freedom, there are songs about rain, songs of love and of loss, a song about fear, a religious celebration that seems to include a short sermon, even the Lord’s Prayer, but even when the subject may be sad, the sound is upbeat and the music seems cheerful.

The performers are backed by two giant video screen set at an angle on which a montage of images takes you on a journey through a township with its corrugated iron roofs, barbed wire fences and deprivation, or briefly into the city or the countryside with a tree full of birds or a dung beetle pushing its ball along. There are also snippets of interview (in English) in which the performers introduce themselves, describe their often hard lives and express their hopes for the future.

This is a close-knit company. There are two sets of brothers: the Qumzas, Bulelani Zola and Thandukolo; the Hobhoshes, Xolkile Sydney and Simphiwe Een; sisters Bontutuzelo and Nomapostile Nyiki. Percussionists Sabu Jiyana and Mkokeli Moses (Kim) Masala make a huge contribution on drums and marimba. Singer Lungiswa Theodora Plaatjies brings out her mbira nyunga nyunga, the finger-plucked metal instrument she calls her boyfriend.

Along with Xoliswa Tom, Zwellandile Mbedu, Mzwabantu Erk Dunyawa, Lindispho Lennox Tsawe and Melumzi Bethwell Nyikana, they all come together to make a great sound. Though each may get their individual moments, which may speak of pain as well as joy, they come together full of energy in a life-affirming celebration that sends an audience home happy.

South African Road Trip: Good Hope – Review

J²

IF you want to inject a mighty dose of hope into your life, the South African Road Trip: Good Hope will provide just the boost you require.

More uplifting than a bottle of Fever-tree Damson & Sloe infused tonic, it will fill you with a belief (for a while, at least) that the world is not that bad a place after all. That music binds us as one. It will remind you that despite terrifying wars and geopolitical posturing, there are plenty of forces for good playing out in the world.

Performing at the Peacock Theatre (Sadler’s Wells in Holborn) just up the road from Aldwych in London, this collection of South African singers and musicians – fourteen strong – makes for thrilling entertainment.

For an hour and 45 minutes, they delight the audience with songs about love, the weather, personal pain and God. Changing between traditional and more modern clothing, the bold vibrant colours of their attire (bright yellows, greens and reds) send out a loud message of a brighter future. Dorien de Jonge has done a marvellous job designing such striking outfits while the choreography of Silumko Koyana is top drawer. Sunglasses are recommended.

The fact that the songs are performed in the Xhosa language adds mightily to the occasion – you don’t need to understand the words. Your soul knows what they mean.  The clicking sounds the performers emit from their mouths are mesmerising.

In between the music and the magical dancing, we are told via two humongous screens at the back of the stage a little bit about the performers.

Music has united them and given them the inspiration to fulfil their dreams: whether it’s becoming a theatre director, getting married or buying their own home.  Inspiring.

Some have observed abuse at close quarters and come out the other end. One talks about the monster of a father who she was afraid of because he ‘used to beat my Mum’. Horrific.

‘Music is my soulmate, my boyfriend,’ says another. Beautiful.

The screens also provide videos (historic and current) of township life in South Africa. Poverty is everywhere, but the pictures are more uplifting than depressing (people get on with their lives, usually with smiles on their faces). It’s where the cast came from – and they’re mightily proud of their roots.

The ensemble comprises eight fine men from the   Khayeltisha United Mambazo  Choir – all ages and all remarkably sprightly as they kick their feet high into the stratosphere – and four superb female Xhosa singers.

Completing the team are two wonderful percussionists, Sabu Jiyana and Mkokeli Moses Masala. Amongst them all are brothers and sisters and long-standing friends. They’re united – as one.  ‘Love is God.’ ‘We need love.’

Then: ‘Let’s share love,’ we are told at the end by the magnificent Lungiswa Theodora Plaatjes. ‘We are one.’

If only it was a message universally embraced. This musical delight is uplifting. It runs until October 30.  Catch it if you can. If you haven’t danced before, this show will get you off your seat. High kicking is not recommended.

Exploring South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope

Last modified on October 19th, 2020 at 09:11

The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky headland on the southern end of South Africa’s Cape Peninsula. The spectacular cape has long been associated with the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans collide.

A common misconception is that the Cape of Good Hope lies at the southernmost tip of the African continent. The misbelief has led the area to become one of South Africa’s most popular tourist attractions.

In reality, however, the southern terminus of Africa lies 150km East, at Cape Aghulas.

But I don’t think the technicality matters much, because the area is special, no matter its latitude.

Table of Contents

CAPE PENINSULA ROAD TRIP

Dan and I explored the Cape Peninsula on a road trip from Cape Town, following three memorable days in the Mother City. Our road trip brought us to many of the most popular attractions along South Africa’s Western Cape and allowed us to make the most of the area’s pristine beaches, abundant wildlife, and jaw-dropping coastal views.

The first stop on our journey, was the wild and scenic landscape around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.

The Cape of Good Hope lies at the tip of the Cape Peninsula, along South Africa’s Western Cape . It boasts a dramatic wildlife-rich coastline and is a highlight of traveling to South Africa.

Cape of Good Hope

Taking a road trip around the Cape Peninsula is the best way of exploring South Africa’s wild and scenic Cape of Good Hope. From Cape Town , Dan and I rented a car and followed the road southward—past beautiful Camps Bay and Hout Bay—along the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive.

From there, we admired the sun-basking penguins at Boulder’s Beach and soaked in views of the infamous Cape of Good Hope.

THE TWELVE APOSTLES IN CAPE TOWN

When we left Cape Town in the early morning, the sun was shining and the clouds lifted from the mountaintops in time for us to see a spectacular view of Cape Town’s Twelve Apostles.

The Twelve Apostles in Cape Town

The soaring mountains form a breathtaking backdrop to the city’s lavish oceanfront property and white sand beaches and, had it not been for the fierce wind and flying sand, I’d have probably plopped down on the beach and convinced myself that I needed another day in the Mother City.

CHAPMAN’S PEAK DRIVE

The road encircling the Cape of Good Hope brought us through stunning coastal scenery.

South Africa Coastline

Much like Oregon’s beautiful highway 101, South Africa’s Chapman’s Peak Drive cuts through sheer cliffs and twists around emerald-green mountains. Each bend of the road affords abundant views of rocky outcrops, sapphire waters and soft, white sand.

Beach in South Africa

But the unrelenting winds pummeled sand into my eyes, nose and mouth, embedded in my hair and virtually swept me right back into our little car and down the road to the Cape of Good Hope.

BOULDER’S BEACH PENGUINS

Our first planned stop along the Cape Peninsula route was Boulder’s Beach in Simon’s Town–a beach aptly named for the large boulders strewn about its milky sands. The beach is well-known as a breeding ground for the small and charming African penguins, so we spent time scrambling over boulders and wading through the shallow ocean waters in order to get a closer look at these charismatic, flightless birds.

Penguins in South Africa

The penguins at Boulder’s Beach were everywhere–playing in the waves, tanning on the open rock faces and crouching under boulders to stay cool.

Boulders Beach Penguins

After a bit of time photographing the penguins and observing their unique personalities, we hopped back into the car and continued along the coastal roads toward the Cape Of Good Hope National Park.

THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

Even as it is becoming common knowledge that the the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans lies elsewhere, tourists flock to the Cape of Good Hope in order to soak in the scenery at the bottom of Africa.

Cape of Good Hope Lighthouse in South Africa

Throughout history, the Cape of Good Hope has been historically significant to sailors and explorers. Bartolomeu Dias, the 15th century Portuguese explorer, was the first officially recorded person to have successfully navigated these turbulent waters and was instrumental in setting up trade routes between Europe and the Far East.

Kaap Die Goeie Hoop

The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point lie less than two miles apart. When we arrived, we elected to first climb up the stairs to the beautiful lighthouse at Cape Point in order to view the Cape of Good Hope from above. The area around the lighthouse was fun to explore. We walked out to various lookouts where we could see sweeping views of the lighthouses, coastlines and pristine scenery. Looking North, we were able to see the mountainous Cape Peninsula stretching toward Cape Town.

Cape of Good Hope Lighthouse

In all other directions, the blue waters spanned as far as the eye could see.

After a few hours exploring the various points of interest in the Cape of Good Hope National Park, we continued along the coastal roads toward the small town of Gansbaai, where we planned on  discovering the unique marine ecosystem the following day.

When we finally arrived late that evening, we checked into our hostel, gathered our courage and prepared ourselves mentally for an intimate encounter with one of the most dangerous and feared animals of the deep.

A dreamy coastline, wine and wildlife make Cape Town, South Africa one of the easiest cities to fall in love with as it entices you with its beckoning beauty. The lovely accents of the friendly folks add to its charisma.

As a traveler to over 50 countries, few places on earth have seduced me like the capital of South Africa. I quickly understood its allure and why friends raved about it with wistful eyes reliving memories of their time there when I said I was starting my African adventure in Cape Town. My love affair with the city began when the jagged coastline came into view as I stared out of the airplane window marveling at Table Mountain and Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years before the fall of apartheid.

south african road trip good hope

I had planned two nights in Cape Town to kick off a multi-week conservation safari adventure. Before I even landed, I knew my short romp would simply be flirting with a mesmerizing city drenched with charm. If you’re short on time, here are the top things to do in Cape Town, South Africa on a short visit.

1. Stay in V&A Waterfront

south african road trip good hope

As part of the oldest working harbor in South Africa and in the Southern Hemisphere, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, commonly called V&A Waterfront , is a bustling harbor filled with shops, restaurants and hotels. For an elegant boutique hotel experience, book a room at Victoria and Alfred Hotel. For an ultra-scenic view of the Cape Town Harbor and Table Mountain, book one of their mountain view rooms. The lively harbor is very safe, even at night. If you’re heading out on an African safari after your stay in Cape Town, stop in Cape Union Mart for any last-minute necessities. The outdoor adventure store has been around since 1933 and is the sole carrier of K-Way, a South African outdoor clothing brand. There are numerous restaurants with outdoor seating along the water. If you want to mingle with locals on the waterfront, Time Out Market is the place. There are 13 unique food concepts housed in the historic power station building.

2. Ride the Aerial Cableway Up Table Mountain

south african road trip good hope

For a mountaintop experience without much effort, taking a ride on a cable car up Table Mountain is one of the top things to do in Cape Town, South Africa. The most prominent landscape feature is the flat-topped Table Mountain soaring out of the ocean. Since 1929, a cableway has run up the mountain. It’s a less than 5-minute ride to the top on Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. The floor of your cable car rotates giving everyone 360° views during the ride. Table Mountain is a national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. If you get it a clear day, consider yourself lucky as it’s often shrouded in orographic clouds and sea fog covering the mountain like a tablecloth. The weather phenomenon comes with a legend that it’s a smoking contest between the devil and a local pirate named Van Hunks.

The aerial cableway does shut down for annual maintenance mid-July through August. To save time, purchase tickets online . Take a rain jacket and layers as the weather changes quickly. While at the top, enjoy a coffee with a view. Give yourself at least an hour to wander around the trails on the top of the mountain. Keep an eye out for dassies or rock hyraxes sunning on the rocks. They look like guinea pigs or marmots but are genetically closely related to elephants. If you have more time you can hike up instead of taking the aerial cableway.

3. Stroll Through Galleries in Bo-Kaap

south african road trip good hope

Cape Town’s most colorful neighborhood is Bo-Kaap . The cobblestoned streets are lined with pastel-colored homes, taking a stroll through the street or snapping a few photos is one of the best things to do in Cape Town, South Africa on your visit. Many are private residences, but some are home to galleries and shops. The buildings were originally white as part of a garrison for soldiers, but freed slaves settled here after emancipation in the 1830s. My guide told me, “Their expression of freedom was very colorful.” Located in “Upper Cape,” the picturesque streets make Bo-Kaap one of the most photographed neighborhoods in the city. Pop into some of the galleries like the one featuring Nathan Chikoto. The recycle artist uses discarded items like aluminum cans and turns them into intriguing works of art. You can’t miss the large elephant made from used coffee pods in front of the gallery on Chiappini Street.

4. Stop at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg

south african road trip good hope

Keep a color theme going as you head to Muizenberg Beach in False Bay and see the colorful beach huts as you watch surfers ride the waves in “Surfers Corner.” If you have time, this is the place to learn to surf. You can rent gear and take a lesson. You can also just make a quick stop for a lovely stroll on the beach.

5. Stop for Lunch in Simon’s Town

south african road trip good hope

Simon’s Town is home to a naval base and baboons. You’ll probably laugh when you see the street signs for the baboons often seen in the historic seaside town. They are wild, so keep your distance. Simon’s Town is one of South Africa’s oldest towns and part of a string of quaint coastal communities as you make your way to Cape of Good Hope. For a relaxing lunch with a view, grab a table on the terrace at Harbor View Restaurant. Sip a South African chenin blanc while you nosh on fresh hake in their fish and chips. Enjoy a stellar harbor view as you dine.

6. See the Boulders Penguin Colony

south african road trip good hope

After a leisurely lunch, head to Boulders Beach Penguin Colony to see penguins frolicking on the beach, one of best things to do in Cape Town, South Africa. It’s just a few minutes from Harbor View Restaurant. The colony is home to several thousand African Penguins. Sadly, the species is declining overall, but the colony is a conservation success story. In 1982, there were only two breeding pairs and today there are over 3,000 birds in the colony. Stroll the boardwalk looking for the penguins nesting in the dunes. At the overlook you have a great view of penguins basking in the sunshine or waddling in and out of the water. Penguins can be seen year-round, but most spend time feeding in the sea during September and October. Juvenile birds molt during January. If you want to see babies, visit during April, May, or June.

7. Spend a Couple of Hours at Cape of Good Hope

south african road trip good hope

Part of the adventure in exploring Cape of Good Hope is the drive itself filled with stunning scenery and unexpected wildlife sightings like the baboons on trucks we encountered when we tried to stop at the Buffelsfontein Visitor Center. Cape of Good Hope is also known as the “Cape of Storms,” because of strong winds and the treacherous waters where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet near the Cape. You’ll feel the gusty winds as you stop at viewpoints. Take the Flying Dutchman funicular up to Cape Point Lighthouse. The funicular’s name is a nod to the Flying Dutchman legend of a ghost ship lost in a storm near the Cape and doomed to sail the oceans forever. You can also hike up to the lighthouse if you don’t want to do the 3-minute ride on the funicular.

From the historic lighthouse built in 1859, you’re treated to an incredible panoramic view from False Bay to the actual Cape of Good Hope and Atlantic Ocean. As you drive from Cape Point Lighthouse down to Cape of Good Hope keep an eye out for wildlife including eland and bontebok. As we got close to the Cape, we encountered ostrich on both sides of the road. It felt like I was on an unexpected mini safari. You’ll likely encounter at least a small crowd at the Cape of Good Hope sign as tourists snap pictures at the most southwestern point in Africa. While at the sign, watch the waves crash on the rocks near the shoreline. You might catch a glimpse of some seals along with numerous birds. Like Table Mountain, make sure you have rain gear and layers as the weather changes quickly.

8. Make an Ice Cream Stop in Noordhoek

south african road trip good hope

Noordhoek Farm Village is a fun area filled with eateries and shops. If you happen to be there on a Wednesday, enjoy the open-air evening market with food stalls, artisan vendors and live entertainment. For handcrafted ice cream in Cape Town, the place to patronize is Kristen’s Kick-Ass Ice Cream. Made in small batches using local dairy and other ingredients, the ice cream is to die for. Order a cone of their sweet cream dark chocolate and honeycomb for a unique ice cream treat to cool you off late afternoon.

9. Catch Sunset from Chapman’s Peak Road

south african road trip good hope

This iconic drive along the Atlantic Coast connects Noordhoek and Hout Bay. “Chappies” toll road, as locals call Chapman’s Peak Road, is named after John Chapman. In 1607, he was a pilot on the English ship Consent sent to row ashore in hopes of finding provisions. He recorded the bay as Chapman’s Chaunce and the name stuck until Dutch settlers established Hout Bay in the 1650s. Construction on the road started in 1915. The first section was completed in 1919 and the scenic drive “hewn out of the face of sheer mountains” opened in 1922. With 114 curves, the ultra-scenic road follows the rocky coastline. While this drive is breathtaking any time of day, it's jaw-dropping at sunset. We pulled off to watch the sky turn golden as the sun sank into oblivion where the water meets the sky on the horizon. With the sky still aglow, we made a second stop at Chapman’s Peak Drive Lookout Point before completing the drive to Hout Bay and back to V&A Waterfront.

I found one day to not be enough time in Cape Town. You need at least two full days to enjoy some of the nearby wineries like Stellenbosch Vineyards and tour Robben Island, which takes a minimum of 3 and a half hours. If you only have a day, it’s worth hiring a guide so you can see as much as possible. Whether you have a day or a week, you’ll likely feel the seduction of this captivating city and wish for more time in Cape Town.

South Africa's Garden Route Is One of the Best Road Trips on the Planet

What to know before hitting the road.

The beauty of the Garden Route is a year-round spectacle, so when you choose to go depends on your adventure of choice. Summer in South Africa—roughly from November to April—brings warm, dry weather, ideal for beach-going and other outdoor activities, but with it also comes peak tourist season. The winter runs from July to September, and offers fewer crowds and milder weather. The sweet spot might just be the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May).

September is an especially excellent time for spotting whales and catching the region’s otherworldly fynbos flowers in full bloom. And since the rainy season comes to a close around the end of August, the Western Cape will be at its greenest, while hiking the infamous Otter Trail in autumn promises pleasantly cool mornings. Keep in mind, however, that rainfall is unpredictable in the Rainbow Nation, so you’re likely to get hit with some drops no matter the time of year.

How to navigate the Garden Route

If the idea of driving yourself through safari land and mountain passes seems a bit daunting, consider booking a trip with a tour company like Contiki , which offers an expert-led, seven-day trip covering the very best of the Garden Route. All accommodations and experiences—from visiting Stellenbosch wineries to kayaking through Storms River Gorge—are included in the package, so you won’t have to worry about booking a thing.

Whether you’re cruising by your lonesome, or placing your fate in the hands of a local guide, here’s everything you absolutely can’t miss along South Africa’s magical Garden Route.

Get to know the locals in the Mother City

On the cultural front, choose from the technicolor architecture of the Bo Kaap Museum or the contemporary art of Zeitz MOCCA . And if you’re looking for a way to commence the trip, Cape Town happens to be a certified all-day party town , with spots like  Caprice  and Modular at the ready to host a good time.

Make your way to the Ostrich Capital of the World

Equally impressive are the Cango Caves , a 20-million-year-old series of chambers hidden within limestone rocks. Tour through the psychedelic stalagmites and stalactites, and if you’re feeling especially adventurous, crawl and slide your way through the narrow tunnels. To end the day, head to Buffelsdrift Game Lodge , where dinner might come with a show: hippos dipping in and out of the estate’s adjacent watering hole. While you’re there, make sure you try the bobotie, a traditional Cape Malayan dish of venison, egg custard, and papadum.

Rub elbows with elephants in Addo

Addo Elephant National Park is swarming with more than 600 elephants, as well as other members of the Big Five like lions, rhinos, and buffalo. You’ll also find some rare antelope species roaming around—including the greater kudu, red hartebeest, and eland—plus, if you look closely, groups of flightless dung beetles exclusive to Addo. The park is massive—the third largest game reserve in South Africa, in fact—and it’s best explored from the driver’s seat of your car. Pull up alongside a watering hole, and you're bound to see multiple gentle giants taking a few sips.

After you’ve had your fill of gazing at animals, point your GPS about 30 minutes southwest to Gberha. Formerly known as Port Elizabeth, this Eastern Cape seaport was recently renamed to reflect its Khoi-San and Xhosa heritage. If time permits, end the day admiring the sunset at Sardinia Bay Beach or walking along Route 67 , a trail of public art installations that celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 67-year quest to end Apartheid.

Go for a second serving of safari then try seafood in Knysna

Check lions and cheetahs off your list at Amakhala Game Reserve , then later enjoy lunch at one of the area’s swanky lodges. Afterwards, turn the car around and travel west to the town of Knysna, widely known as the Jewel of the Garden Route. The seaside village is famous for its oysters, so make a beeline for the bivalves at places like The Drydock or 34 South .

Set sail in Plettenberg Bay, then paddle beneath the Storms River Bridge

Your next stop is Tsitsikamma National Park , a.k.a. the garden of the Garden Route. Here, dramatic currents sculpt white foamy shores flanked by mountains bursting with gorgeous flora and fauna. Taking its name from the Khoi-San term for “place of abundant water,” this pocket of natural splendor is famous for the suspension bridge that swings over the Storms River, as well as the arduous Otter Trail, a five-day trek that culminates in the village of Nature Valley. But there’s so much more to the park, from zip lining across Tsitsikamma Falls to observing seabirds soaring through the rocky ravines. If you only have time for a snapshot of what Tsitsikamma has to offer, make the most of it by renting a kayak and paddling down the breathtaking Storms River Gorge.

Pet some sharks in Hermanus then sip your way through Stellenbosch

Along with the Paarl and Franschhoek Valleys, the oak-lined town of Stellenbosch is part of the Cape Winelands, a winemaking region with more than 100 venues including standouts like Dornier Wine Estate , Blaauwklippen , and Middelvlei . You can’t leave without trying a glass of South Africa’s signature pinotage, a cross between pinot noir and cinsault. Spend the rest of the afternoon—or the next few days—romping through the scenic vineyards, then retire for a good night’s sleep. You’re due back in Cape Town in the morning. Want more Thrillist?
