Following the huge success of their NETFLIX biopic THE DIRT, Mötley Crüe has seen a massive surge in new audience with fans around the world demanding the band tour again. This led to the band members reuniting and announcing that "Mötley Crüe is back" in 2019. While The Dirt caused a meteoric 350% increase in streams of Mötley Crüe's music across all platforms and the younger 18-44 demographic now represents 64% of the band’s fanbase most of the new fans have never seen any of the band's legendary live shows that Crüeheads have relished for 4 decades. In 2021, Mötley Crüe celebrated their 40th band anniversary, as well as the 40th birthday of their iconic debut album, TOO FAST FOR LOVE. The 35th anniversary of their GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS hit album is coming up on May 15. Mötley Crüe have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, achieving 7 platinum and multi-platinum albums, 9 Top 10 albums, 22 Top 40 Mainstream Rock hits, 6 Top 20 Pop singles and 3 GRAMMY nominations. The band have amassed close to 5 billion streams across digital platforms. They have over 15 million social media followers, a New York Times best-seller and a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. The band is ready to deliver an over the top stage show packed full of hit songs.   "It's on!  We don't think we've ever looked forward more to kicking off a tour than this one. We can't wait to finally see all the fans across North America again. Get ready for a wild ride this summer!" Mötley Crüe said in a joint statement.

ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Def Leppard are one of the most important forces in rock music. In 2019, the icons closed out a sold-out worldwide tour including a North American stadium run & headlining the UK’s Download Festival to 90k screaming fans. Def Leppard’s star continues to rise and prevail. The band have amassed a staggering 5.5 billion streams since 2018, reaching a younger 18-44 demographic that now represents 58% of their fanbase. Additionally, the band have garnered an impressive 15 million followers across their social media platforms. Def Leppard also celebrates the landmark 45 th anniversary of their formation this year, marking 45 years of legendary rock ‘n’ roll history making. Def Leppard’s influential career crosses generations and includes 110 million records sold, numerous hit singles and ground-breaking multi-platinum albums—including two of the best-selling albums of all time, Pyromania and Hysteria, both of which are certified Diamond (10x platinum).

“On behalf of the band, we’re beyond thrilled that the stadium tour is finally happening this summer … it’s been a while coming and we can’t wait to get back on stage again & we can’t wait to see you in one of the many stadiums soon!” said Joe Elliott.

POISON will be bringing a rocking real and relevant no holds barred thunderous live show to the Stadium tour this summer with the all original lineup of Bret Michaels, C.C. DeVille, Bobby Dall and Rikki Rockett. POISON will be unleashing an onslaught of hit after hit songs in its set. The humanitarian of the year, two years running, Michaels along with POISON is known to bring a unique style of passionate high energy, sincere gratitude and a positive attitude.  Michaels engages all the fans and makes it an absolute epic ride of true live music. Together With C.C.Deville on guitar, Bobby Dall on bass, and Rikki Rockett on drums POISON will rock the stadium with a chemistry that will bring a big summer mega party vibe and Michaels promises to give 1000 % on the stage as the hotter it gets the harder POISON promises to rock!!!

Poison’s Bret Michaels also added: “There are not enough words to thank the three generations of fans for making this such an exciting, record breaking, historical tour with the fastest sell outs in history at these stadiums.”

Joan Jett grew up during a time when rock ‘n’ roll was off limits to girls and women, but as a teenager, she promptly blew the door to the boys’ club right off its hinges. After forming her band the Blackhearts in 1979, with whom Jett has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics "Bad Reputation," "I Love Rock 'N' Roll," "I Hate Myself For Loving You," and "Crimson and Clover." With a career that has spanned music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism, Joan Jett remains a potent force and inspiration to generations of fans worldwide. As a producer, she has overseen seminal albums by Bikini Kill, and the Germs' LA punk masterpiece ‘GI.’ Jett and Kenny Laguna (her longtime producer and music partner) co-founded Blackheart Records from the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac after rejections from no less than 23 labels. 40 years later, Blackheart is a thriving entertainment company producing music, film and television, and continues to champion emerging bands. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue touring the globe with headlining shows alongside fellow rock legends like The Who, Green Day, Heart, and Foo Fighters. After two COVID-19 postponements, the group will return to the road in summer 2022 for The Stadium Tour with Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Poison. 'Bad Reputation,' a documentary about Jett's life, premiered to critical acclaim at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is now available for streaming.

“We are so excited to be back out on the road! We missed doing what we love most and can’t wait to see the fans out there again!” said Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Emerging rock band Classless Act, signed to Better Noise Music, is set to open the tour. With the release of their single “Give It To Me” in 2021, the band has already received critical praise from the likes of rock media including SPIN, Loudwire, and more. Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee was an early follower of the band and is excited to have them join him and his bandmates on the road, saying,  "I remember when we went out with Ozzy in 1984 and how it was an insane game changer!! We literally blew up after having that opportunity to play live in front of 20,000 people every f***ing night! Since then, we’ve always felt it was important to help new bands; whether it was Guns N Roses, Skid Row or so many others. This summer we’re gonna help out Classless Act."

Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil reveals plans for 2024 tour and third Vegas residency

"We're far from being over", the frontman said of the band's recently finalised Stadium Tour

motley crue tour las vegas

Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil has revealed that the band is planning a 2024 tour, and has intentions of completing a third residency at Las Vegas.

Neil – who last week (September 9) wrapped up this year’s stretch of the group’s Stadium Tour alongside bandmates Tommy Lee , Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars – revealed the band’s future schedule in an interview with Las Vegas Review-Journal .

“I am kind of sad, because it’s been so much fun,” Neil said of The Stadium Tour’s completion, “[but] we’re far from being over. When we come back in ’24, we’re going to do it all over again.”

The Stadium Tour,  which has thus far  taken Mötley Crüe across the US and Canada from June through to September, will re-commence in February of next year. The band is expected to again enlist tourmates Def Leppard , Poison and Joan Jett for the 2023 run of shows, which will take place across Mexico, South America, Europe and more.

Nothing as big as this comes from any one person alone. Yes, you see us onstage and sometimes it seems as if it’s all… Posted by Motley Crue on  Saturday, September 10, 2022

Earlier this year, Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen revealed similar long-term intentions for the tour, telling Chile’s Radio Futuro that The Stadium Tour would run for “at least three years”.

“Definitely next summer is gonna be Europe, and then South America, Australia [and] Japan. Next year, hopefully at some point, we’ll be playing all of those markets,” Collen said (as per Noise 11 ). Sixx echoed similar intentions in August.

While Neil didn’t reveal specifics of the prospective 2024 tour, he did say that he intends for Mötley Crüe’s return to include a residency in Las Vegas. Should it come to fruition, the residency would mark Mötley Crüe’s third stint on the strip, having completed runs of Vegas shows at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in 2012 and 2013.

“We have definitely talked about doing [another Vegas residency], and everybody loves to do the residencies. So I say, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna do it.’ We just have to look at sometime in ‘24, to be back in Vegas, but we will be back,” Neil said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Neil confirmed that despite their plans to continue touring, a new Mötley Crüe album is not on the cards. “We are strictly a touring band,” he said “there are a lot of cool special effects [on the tour], and we’re just a cool band putting on a rock show.”

Mötley Crüe’s Stadium Tour, which began in June and marks their first tour since officially reuniting in 2018, has been rife with complications. In June, Lee left and later rejoined the tour after an injury left the drummer with broken ribs . Last month, a man attending the band’s tour date in Indianapolis was injured after falling from the upper level of the Lucas Oil Stadium.

Earlier this week, Lee revealed to crowds at one of the final Vegas shows that he’d joined OnlyFans . The drummer referenced the full-frontal nude photo he’d posted to Instagram last month, which he said came off the back of “a motherfucking bender.”

Report: MÖTLEY CRÜE And DEF LEPPARD's 'Stadium Tour' Adds Las Vegas Date In September

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal , MÖTLEY CRÜE 's long-awaited "The Stadium Tour" with DEF LEPPARD , POISON and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS will close on September 9 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Previously, the trek was scheduled to end on September 7 at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California.

"The Stadium Tour" , which was originally planned for 2020 and later moved to 2021, will now kick off on June 16 in Atlanta, Georgia.

This past December, Nikki Sixx said that MÖTLEY CRÜE is still on track to finally launch its long-awaited reunion this year. The bassist addressed the status of "The Stadium Tour" while answering a fan question on Twitter . Responding to a fan who wrote, "I'm hopefully going to see The Crue in Houston Tx Aug 2022!", Sixx said, "We 100% plan on touring in 2022. See ya at the show."

In October, Sixx told Germany's Radio Bob! that he and his CRÜE bandmates will "start rehearsals in May" for "The Stadium Tour" . "I start training in December," he said. "Now it's down to hard work, getting ready, getting the band into rehearsal.

"We rehearse really hard because we will take a song like 'Dr. Feelgood' and while we're building the show — let's just say the show is… all the lights are moving, they're green and they're slowly moving — we'll build a whole intro in and design the lights and the lasers around that," he explained. "So it's a long process and tedious. So we go to rehearsal and we might need to build in those 32 bars. And then we've gotta work with the lighting and the laser company. And then we've gotta make sure everything is organized so we get our count-ins for where we need to be onstage. So there's so much going on."

When it happens, "The Stadium Tour" will mark the CRÜE 's first live dates since wrapping its 2014/2015 farewell tour. CRÜE toured with POISON back in 2011 and DEF LEPPARD teamed up with POISON for a string of road dates in 2017, but the upcoming jaunt marks the first time all four acts have hit the road together for an extended tour.

As of January 30, 2020, "The Stadium Tour" had already grossed $130 million from one million tickets sold, plus another $5 million worth of VIP seats, according to Billboard .

Tickets ranged from $150 to $400, not counting some varied pricing that reflected demand as part of "dynamic pricing."

In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, thousands of concerts and festivals have either been postponed or canceled, as social distancing and self-quarantining make performing live music and attending live shows all but impossible.

U.S. officials have repeatedly urged Americans to heed what federal, state and local officials are asking of them in order to curtail the spread and dampen the impact of the virus on the population.

MÖTLEY CRÜE 's last studio album was 2008's "Saints Of Los Angeles" , which was followed by a 2009 "Greatest Hits" compilation.

In 2018, MÖTLEY CRÜE recorded four new songs for "The Dirt" movie, including the single "The Dirt (Est. 1981) (Feat. Machine Gun Kelly)" , "Ride With The Devil" , "Crash And Burn" and the band's own spin on Madonna 's "Like A Virgin" .

Terrible show in Vegas. Not worth it. Music was poor with the exception of Def Leppard. Motley Crue should not have been the headliner. They are terrible

Mötley crüe and def leppard with poison and joan jett and the blackhearts in one incredible live concert.

The world’s most iconic and celebrated rock legends are on the road co-headlining a tour so popular, it could only be held in America’s biggest stadiums, and this is your chance to be part of it.

The stadium tour features Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard with Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Mötley Crüe

When Mötley Crüe came onto the music scene, everyone knew that heavy metal would never be the same. Now, after more than 40 years, and following the huge success of its Netflix biopic, The Dirt, Mötley Crüe  has seen a massive surge in new fans around the world demanding the band tour again.

In 2021, Mötley Crüe celebrated its 40th band anniversary, as well as the 40th birthday of their iconic debut album, Too Fast for Love. The band has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, achieving seven platinum and multiplatinum albums, nine Top 10 albums, 22 Top 40 Mainstream Rock hits, six Top 20 Pop singles, and three Grammy nominations.

Def Leppard

Los Angeles, CA (January 28, 2014) – After more than three decades together, iconic rock ‘n roll band MÖTLEY CRÜE announced today their Final Tour and the band’s ultimate retirement. The announcement was solidified when the band signed a formal Cessation Of Touring Agreement, effective at the end of 2015, in front of global media in Los Angeles today. Celebrating the announcement of this Final Tour, the band will perform on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live TONIGHT and will appear on CBS This Morning TOMORROW MORNING.

With over 80 million albums sold, MÖTLEY CRÜE has sold out countless tours across the globe and spawned more than 2,500 MÖTLEY CRÜE branded items sold in over 30 countries. MÖTLEY CRÜE has proven they know how to make a lasting impression and this tour will be no different; Fans can expect to hear the catalogue of their chart- topping hits and look forward to mind-blowing, unparalleled live production. “When it comes to putting together a new show we always push the envelope and that’s part of Motley Crue’s legacy,” explains Nikki Sixx (bass). “As far as letting on to what we’re doing, that would be like finding out what you’re getting for Christmas before you open the presents. We think in an age of too much information, we’d like to keep some surprises close to our chest until we launch the Final Tour.”

The Final Tour presented by Dodge and produced by Live Nation will kick off in North America on July 2nd in Grand Rapids, MI and reach 72 markets before hitting international territories in 2015. To Live Nation MÖTLEY CRÜE tours are not only box office successes but artistically their shows have set the bar for production and entertainment value. "There's no arguing that Motley Crue have been and always will be the definitive bad boys of rock and roll," says Rick Franks, Live Nation's Regional President of North America Concerts. "But behind all those notorious stories is a legendary rock band that has revolutionized heavy metal and created some of the biggest hits in music history. They are a hugely successful global brand and a touring powerhouse. Everyone at Live Nation has a tremendous amount of respect for these hard working and extremely talented gentlemen. The music industry will never have another Motley Crue."

The Dodge brothers were a notorious duo, so it seemed only natural to partner with the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. "Whenever I talk to people about Motley Crue, the common thread is how cool and relevant the band remains even after 33 years," said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO, Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "This irreverent 'staying power' resonates deeply with the Dodge brand as we turn the corner on our 100 year anniversary. What better way to celebrate the band's final tour and the 25th anniversary of Kickstart My Heart than to do it together?"

Fans can look forward to Very Special Guest ALICE COOPER joining MÖTLEY CRÜE for an incredible package - Alice invented the genre and MÖTLEY CRÜE put steroids in it! "Real hard rock bands are hard to find these days," said Alice, continuing,"Motley has always gone on stage with one attitude and that's to blow the audience away. That's exactly how we do it. Putting Motley Crue and Alice Cooper together is going to be just what this summer really NEEDS. We're going to go out there and tear it up, and I can't wait to see Motley on stage. Motley Crue and Alice Cooper - A match made in... Armageddon?"

As documented in the Cessation Of Touring Agreement the band signed at the press conference today, the band will not tour after this Final Tour. Band Attorney, Doug Mark of Mark Music & Media Law, explains “Other bands have split up over rancor or the inability of people to get along, but this is a mutual among all four original members and peaceful decision to move on to other endeavors and to confirm it with a binding agreement.” Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Mick Mars will go their separate ways after the lengthy 2-year touring cycle. Tommy Lee (drums) explains “Everything must come to an end!! We always had a vision of going out with a big fucking bang and not playing county fairs and clubs with 1 or 2 original band members! Our job here is done!!!” Of the band’s tumultuous history, Mick Mars (guitar) adds "(It has been) more drama than ‘General Hospital’ it keeps 'em watchin’ and they keep comin’ back.” Vocalist, Vince Neil says of the Finality of the tour - “I'll miss playing with the guys but I won't quit playing rock and roll!! I feel there are a lot of great opportunities and exciting projects after Motley.”

The Final Tour will coincide with the film made from MÖTLEY CRÜE’s NY Times Best-Selling book The Dirt. Jeff Tremaine (Bad Grandpa) has signed on to direct the opus that is set to debut in theaters globally in 2015, coinciding with The Final Tour. The Dirt is not only one of the best selling rock books of all time but also one of the greatest rock books of all time because of its brutal honesty, its unique voice, its multiple perspectives on the same events and its first-person inclusion of all members of the same band. Most rock memoirs are salacious mud-slinging accounts of a single person and MÖTLEY CRÜE was adamant to include the perspectives of all four of its members. Tremaine’s intention is to make, not just a great movie about a band, but a great movie about four misfits who, despite themselves and everyone else, band together to overcome the odds and change the history of Rock & Roll. "The Dirt' is a movie I've wanted to make ever since I read the book in 2002,” says Tremaine. “I relate to the story on so many levels; my whole professional career has been about boys behaving badly, so I have a real connection to the material. It's awesome to be working with the band at such an exciting time in Motley Crue’s history." The film will be produced by the members of MÖTLEY CRÜE, Rick Yorn, Julie Yorn, Erik Olsen and 10th Street Entertainment.

BIG MACHINE RECORDS, home to Country Superstars such as Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw has teamed up in a joint venture with MÖTLEY RECORDS and ELEVEN SEVEN MUSIC for the summer 2014 release of a Country Music Tribute To MÖTLEY CRÜE. BIG MACHINE founder and CEO, Scott Borchetta, is among the legion of Country Music fans who love MÖTLEY CRÜE. The country tribute album will show off the band’s quality songwriting with these fresh takes on their classic hit songs. Among the artists already confirmed to be featured on the country tribute album is Florida Georgia Line. Borchetta says of the collaboration, "I have been a not-so-secret Crue fan from the beggining. When manager Chris Nilsson called with the idea for a tribute album on Big Machine Records it was an immediate 'yes' from me! Our album will highlight just how great the Motley Crue song catalog is. At the end of the day, that's what will stand the test of time."

MÖTLEY CRÜE Fan Club members will get the exclusive first crack at tickets and VIP Packages, via a unique code, beginning on Wednesday, January 29th starting at 10am local time. VIP ticket packages will be made available to the general public on Thursday, January 30th at 10am local time. The general public ticket on-sale for most shows is Friday, January 31st. All tickets and packages can be obtained via Ticketmaster.com , LiveNation.com , or via MotleyVIP.com .

Motley Crue Will Tour Again, Eyeing Third Las Vegas Residency

This past Friday night (Sept. 9), Mötley Crüe finished the 2022 portion of their expansive “ Stadium Tour ” with a show at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium. Beyond drummer Tommy Lee cheekily announcing that he’s joined OnlyFans, vocalist Vince Neil  newly declared that in addition to touring internationally with Def Leppard next year, the quartet plan to resume traveling across the U.S. in 2024.

In a recent (Sept. 8) chat with the Las Vegas Review-Journal , Neil told interviewer John Katsilometes that the band has been reinvigorated by their re-emergence. “I am kind of sad, because it’s been so much fun. We just played SoFi Stadium in L.A. and it was great,” he added.

Actually, he continued, Mötley Crüe have been having such a great time on stage this year – and are so excited about their 2023 shows – that they’re planning to play the States when they come back: “We’re far from being over. When we come back in ‘24, we’re going to do it all over again.”

While he didn’t allude to any particular dates or number of shows, he did say that their return will almost certainly include a third Las Vegas Residency (to follow the ones they did at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in 2012 and 2013).

“We have definitely talked about doing it, and everybody loves to do the residencies, so I say, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna do it.’ We just have to look at sometime in ‘24, to be back in Vegas. But we will be back,” he specified.

Last night (Sept. 10), the group took to Facebook to show their appreciation for everyone involved in the “Stadium Tour”:

Don’t get your hopes up about Mötley Crüe going back into the studio, however, as Neil clarified that they’re “strictly a touring band” now.

Of course, the promise of more Crüe concerts is reason enough to celebrate.

Stadium Tour Comes to a Wild Close in Las Vegas

It was a wild (and loud) night in Las Vegas on Friday (Sept. 9) as the Stadium Tour wrapped up its successful summer trek.

Opening act Classless Act got the party started with a short yet emphatic set, once again proving why they're one of the fastest rising new acts in rock. Frontman Derek Day strutted around the stage with swagger, igniting energy in the early arrivers.

Joan Jett was up next, offering her customary style of fiery punk rock. Backed by the Blackhearts, Jett powered through a mix of her own hits ("Victim of "Circumstance, "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "Bad Reputation"), Runaways tunes ("Cherry Bomb," "You Drive Me Wild") and cover songs ("Everyday People," "Crimson & Clover"). The Stadium Tour's lone female act proved once again that ladies can rock just as hard as the guys... and maybe even harder.

Watch Joan Jett Perform 'I Hate Myself for Loving You' on the Stadium Tour's Final Stop

Poison delivered a rowdy good time during their mid-show set. Frontman Bret Michaels noted he'd been "waiting two-and-a-half years for this party in this stadium," alluding to the Stadium Tour's multiple pandemic-related delays . Early highlights included opening song "Look What the Cat Dragged In" and "Talk Dirty to Me," with Michaels getting the thousands in attendance to dance and sing along.

The other members of Poison were in fine form as well. Bassist Bobby Dall was a ball of energy, continually sprinting all over the stage as he pumped up the crowd. Guitarist C.C. Deville shredded some incendiary solos, including his customary "Eruption" tribute to Eddie Van Halen . And Rikki Rockett delivered the night's poignant moment, honoring departed Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali before blazing through his own emphatic solo behind the kit.

Towards the end of Poison's set, Michaels admitted it was "bittersweet" to have the Stadium Tour come to a close, explaining that he'd had the "time of [his] life" on the summer trek. Based on the frontman's endless energy throughout Poison's set, it was clear he meant it.

Watch Poison Perform 'Unskinny Bop' in Las Vegas

Def Leppard and Motley Crue alternated headlining spots throughout the tour, and it was Def Lep who got the second-to-last slot this evening. "Welcome to the last night of the Stadium Tour," singer Joe Elliott declared as the new wave of British heavy metal icons took the stage. "What a place to fucking be!"

Def Leppard charged out of the gates with "Take What You Want," a cut from their 2022 album Diamond Star Halos . From there the group rocked through material from throughout their legendary career, including "Armageddon It," "Love Bites" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

Guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell tore through emphatic guitar riffs all set long, while drummer Rick Allen  powered the classic act with his forceful backbeat.  A rendition of "This Guitar" was dedicated to the recently deceased Queen Elizabeth II, while classic tracks "Rock of Ages" and "Photograph" finished the set.

Watch Def Leppard Perform 'Armageddon It' at the Stadium Tour's Final Show

Closing honors were left to Motley Crue, and the legendary glam metal act didn’t disappoint. Engulfed by some of the most impressive lighting and stage design of the night, the band rocked through many of their biggest hits.

Opening song "Wild Side," led into the powerful punch of "Shout at the Devil." Frontman Vince Neil , noting he lived in Las Vegas for 28 years, admitted the night had special meaning to him. Meanwhile, drummer Tommy Lee seemed turbo-charged for the performance, pounding out beats on a custom kit with a kick drum decorated in honor of Taylor Hawkins .

Further Crue highlights included "Dr. Feel Good" and "Girls, Girls, Girls," but the most memorable moment of the set wasn't even a song. Midway through the performance, Lee got up and spoke to the crowd, mentioning his recent headline-grabbing nude pic . The drummer then proceeded to encourage men in the audience to show their penises -- some did -- before announcing that he was starting his own Only Fans account by mooning the crowd .

The night ended with an emphatic rendition of "Kickstart My Heart," a rowdy way to bring the triumphant Stadium Tour to a close.

Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe Announce Rescheduled Summer Stadium Tour

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe will embark on their long-delayed North American tour this summer. The trek, dubbed the Stadium Tour, will kick off in Atlanta on June 16 and conclude in Las Vegas on Sept. 9.

Originally scheduled for 2020 , the tour will include previously announced stops alongside five new dates. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Poison will open all shows. Tickets for the new dates go on sale to the general public Friday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. local time via Live Nation .

“On behalf of the band, we’re beyond thrilled that the stadium tour is finally happening this summer,” Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott said in a statement. “It’s been a while coming and we can’t wait to get back on stage again and we can’t wait to see you in one of the many stadiums soon!”

Mötley Crüe added, “It’s on! We don’t think we’ve ever looked forward more to kicking off a tour than this one. We can’t wait to finally see all the fans across North America again. Get ready for a wild ride this summer!”

In 2019, Elliott spoke to Rolling Stone about how the tour came to be. “To be in stadiums, you really need to pair up. We’re trying to turn these shows into a mini-festival,” Elliott said. “When you think about Joan Jett opening up the night, and then Poison going on and then us and Mötley following them, it’s an event. It really is. And we’re all from the same genre. Most people that like that kind of thing saw us day after day on MTV in the Eighties. Our journeys have gone in different directions since then, but synchronicity pulls us back together once again. It’s a celebration of that whole kind of vibe.”

Last year, Def Leppard unveiled Volume 3 — a box set containing three albums released in the 2000s, B-sides, demos, and unreleased recordings from the band’s vault. The six-CD set included 2002’s X , the 2006 covers album  Yeah!, and 2008’s Songs From the Sparkle Lounge , plus the bonus discs B-Sides,  Yeah! Studio Covers  and  Yeah! Live . Volume 3 arrived two years after Def Leppard released Volume 2   — which focused on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inductees’ Nineties catalog — in June 2019.  Volume 1 dropped in 2018, while a box set featuring the band’s earliest, unreleased recordings  was released in 2020.

Meanwhile, Mötley Crüe recently sold their entire recorded music catalog to BMG that included the band’s nine studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilation sets. One of the most iconic American heavy metal bands, Mötley Crüe was born out of the beautiful Los Angeles, California in the United States.

Formed in 1981, bassist Nikki Six met drummer Tommy Lee through a mutual friend, and decided to form a band together. The two set out to find other members and met guitarist Mick Mars (real name Bob Deal) who was immediately auditioned and hired. Lee then recruited his high school mate Vince Neil, who was still a part of the band Rockandi, to be their lead vocalist. After a bit of apprehension, Neil gave in and joined the trio to form the band you know and love as Mötley Crüe today.

In November 1981 they released their first album “Too Fast For Love” which was entirely produced and released by their own record label Leathür Records and set out on a Canadian tour. Using this forward movement of cult popularity in Los Angeles, their manager at the time, Allan Coffman, helped them obtain a record deal with Elektra Records; which they signed in Spring 1982. The signing meant a re-mastered mix of the album “Too Fast For Love” as well as a new album entitled “Shout At The Devil” in the works, which was consequently released in 1983. A mere two years later, they released a third album, “Theatre of Pain.”

Their quick success was not without consequence however. Their party hard mentalities meant a few run-ins with the law, reaching their first breaking point when Vince Neil crashed his car, resulting in death and severe injury to other passengers. While “Theatre of Pain” was sitting atop the music charts, Neil was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence and served time in 1986. If that wasn’t enough, following the release of their fourth album “Girls Girls Girls,” their 1987 tour had to be canceled due to Sixx being found dead from heroin overdose; however, he was revived back to life. Eventually their new managers Doug Thaler and Doc McGhee convinced them to attend rehab and the band took a step out of the spotlight.

A clean and sober band, Mötley Crüe recorded and released “Dr. Feelgood” in 1989 and it shot straight to the charts and stayed for weeks. By October 1991, the band released their first compilation album “Decade of Decadence” which also shot straight to the Billboard charts; however, the 90s was generally not a strong decade for the band. Neil left, was shortly replaced by John Corabi for the release of “Motley Crue” which didn’t meet the commercial expectation as their previous albums. With contractual obligations lived out in 1998, the band took back their catalog, but tensions were still high resulting solo projects by Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil.

Luckily things picked back up in the 2000s resulting in a reunion, and release of the “New Tattoo” and “Saints of Los Angeles” (2008). However, this also meant the announcement of their retirement and final tour.

Live reviews

This is the fourth time I've seen the Crüe, and the second time at MSG. Even though I also saw them on tour with Aerosmith, and saw a show during one of their residencies at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, this Final Tour show lives up to expectations. Vince even learned most of the words to the songs!! (Anyone who has seen Mötley Crüe live before will know that this is kind of a big deal. At previous shows I’ve attended, the audience sang nearly as much as Vince did.)

Nikki Sixx is my favorite member of Mötley Crüe, and he was in top form at this show, and even had a fire-shooting attachment on his bass for "Shout at the Devil." He also regaled the audience with the long story of how he moved to LA and pulled the band together. Even though I already knew the story from reading The Dirt, it was still great to hear Nikki tell it live, in his own words. While that little interlude brought the energy level down a bit, it did a nice job of bringing the night full circle and truly encapsulating all 33 years of the band's life.

Tommy Lee's drum roller coaster contraption was totally insane, spanning the length of the arena floor, and allowing Tommy’s drum kit to do 360 degree spins as it travelled along the track. The guys played a solid two hour set and definitely went out with a bang (literally - there was a ton of pyro during closing number "Kickstart My Heart," including Nikki’s afore mentioned fire-shooting bass).

The strongest testament to this show is that the next day I had to go online to check the rest of their tour dates to find out if I could possibly see another show on the tour (sadly, no other cities convenient to me remain), and a full 24 hours later I was still buzzing with energy.

However, to paraphrase Nikki, this show/tour isn't "goodbye" because the Crüe's music isn’t going anywhere – it’s going to be around to haunt us until the day that we die.

Mötley Crüe is Mötley Crüe. Loud, aggressive, sometimes out of key and sometimes the lyrics are skipped or mumbled. But the show goes on, and the presentation is excellent. There is fire. There are dancers. There are lights and lasers and explosions, even Nikki's flame throwing bass guitar is back! About the only thing missing would be a giant video screen showing the band's MTV hits as they played them. If you have seen the Crüe at any point in the last decade, then you know what to expect; ten to twelve standard hits, a couple of newer wanna be hits, a few rotating 'deep cut' tracks that really are not that deep anymore. Oh, and then there is the drum solo. On this farewell tour the antics in the drum solo depend if the venue can support it. Sonically, maybe you're better without the drum solo - the antics are cool, the drumming is not. To me Mötley Crüe has always been a band of individuals that somehow fit together when they need to rock the stage. Tommy famous for his off stage antics as much as his drumming stunts - both overshadowing his ability a bit. Mick's quiet, methodical personality never seemed to fit his guitar playing, or the band - but it works. Vince - well has he let himself go a bit too much? Still a great front man - off stage. Nikki, you get a little bit of everything with him, but he has the talent still to back up most of what he says and does. Though I am curious why they have dumped the new song from their set lists after just a few dates on the tour. This 'may' be the last tour, and it will satisfy most fans. But it's not the last time you will hear these songs. Expect side projects to keep these songs alive until a reunion of some sorts down the road.

If you’ve read Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life - and I’d thoroughly recommend it if you haven’t - you’ll know all about his attitude to his legendary drug-taking; fairly blase, for the most part, although he also largely insists that he only did them for utilitarian purposes - for the sake of staying up long enough to get songs finished, or to knock him out when there were too many ideas bouncing around his brain. I don’t know if any of the members of Motley Crue have read his book, either, but they’ll likely have treated Richards’ admission that hedonism wasn’t his sole motivating factor as a show of weakness; indeed, hedonism is the very foundation on which the L.A. band were built. There are far more classic tales of rock and roll excess than I can list here - bass player Nikki Sixx once had to be effectively resurrected after a heroin overdose with two shots of adrenaline straight to the heart - and all indications are that the lifestyles that made the Crue one of the most notorious bands in rock and roll history back in the eighties have begun to catch up with them, decades later. They’re currently undertaking what will be their final ever tour, running through to 2015, before retirement; as un-Crue a concept as that seems, though, they’ll be bringing their larger than life personas to the stage with them for one last run through the hits; expect a serious shot of glamorous debauchery from a band that nobody expected to be old before they died.

I saw Motley Crue on the Theatre of Pain tour when I was in High School and was blown away. I have been hooked from that moment. This tour is AWESOME!!! They are tighter than ever and engage the crowd from the very beginning! Alice Cooper was great as always but Motley set the standard and showed why they are the Gods of Heavy Metal and Glam Rock. Nikki Sixx played a Bass that shot Fire while he was shredding center stage. On With The Show was amazing and was electrifying the crowd. No one sat down the entire show. Shoreline at Mountain View was a perfect intimate venue for them. Their encore was on a mini stage in the middle of the crowd next to me. Motley truly showed that they love their fans and playing music. Mick Mars is a virtuoso on the axe. Even if you have seen them before go. If you haven't you MUST SEE THIS BAND. I have seen them a couple of times and they are true artists and take you on a journey that only they can. They play everything on this tour. Dr. Feelgood, Shout at the Devil, Saints of Los Angeles and Smoking in the Boys Room. They use smoke, fire, lasers and female dancers throughout the show. Nikki gives a different talk every night about being in the band and what the fans mean to him. Mick Mars does a solo that you will not believe. I am looking to find them somewhere else on this tour. It is worth every penny and MORE!!

Having seen Motley Crüe over 20 times since the mid 80's, this was bittersweet. The show was good, there were a few things that stood out. Vince's voice sounded a little tired and even more important, I really missed having the Tommy drum show at the Hollywood Bowl. Last time I saw them there they did have the roller coaster drums and this time with all the hype about his set up, he was not able to do it at the bowl. He also did not engage with the crowd nearly as much as usual, he just stayed back and played. I would have liked to hear more from him. All in all though, they played all the songs I wanted to hear and it was a fun evening. The end of an era and sad to see them go when they are still young and can clearly put on a great live show.

Motley Crue were my first concert. They were awesome then and were awesome in Greenville twenty four years later. A spectacle of sound, fire, explosions, and mayhem. Most of the crowd was on their feet and singing along for the whole concert.

Alice Cooper opened the show and brought all of his tricks: the snake, the guillotine, the Frankenstein monster, etc.

I've had a thought all week of how great it is to be able to see these guys on stage in 2014 and it might as well be 1990, 1975, etc. As a sports fan, I can't see Herschel Walker, Rickey Henderson, or Joe Montana perform like they did in their prime, but I can still see Alice Cooper and Motley Crue replicate their prime.

If you get the chance to see this show, go!

For one thing the first band (not Alice Cooper) was so loud and horrible we had to go outside to where the merchandise was sold just to get away. Alice Cooper was amazing as always... Mötley Crue was AMAZING! I've never seen them live! Their pyrotechnics was awesome, they covered alot of the years of music. Nikki spoke about how they ended up together. The only thing I was disappointed about was Tommy's drumset was small because people that have seen them live before absolutely raved about him and his drums: he didn't have one solo..and really didn't even get to see him excel through smoke. Overall I would definitely see them again. Seeing them perform live was great.

Seeing the boys one last time was great, Motley Crue did not disappoint. Having Alice Cooper start the concert was cool, it was my first time seeing him perform live and he sounds great. If they come to your town do yourself a huge favor and buy tickets to this show. All their top hits and a few from their latest albums made for one serious night of Heavy Metal!

Get there early, you'll definitely want the skull made out of band members' photos. I love my shirt!

As they did with the original release of their records, Def Leppard dominated the worldwide charts again, which found their albums charting in the iTunes Top 10 in more than 30 countries, including Hysteria at #3 in the US, and #5 in the UK (36 years after the album had charted at No 1 in the Billboard charts). Def Leppard also had the #1, #2 and #3 records on the US catalogue albums chart. The band have gone on to amass a staggering 5.5 billion streams since 2018, reaching a younger 18-44 demographic that now represents 58% of their fanbase. As a result, Mötley Crüe gained an entire new generation of young fans who discovered the band through the movie and further solidified their iconic status, relevance and the timelessness of their songwriting.

Fans of the band are also able to buy/rent  The Retaliators  movie on VOD platforms now; Nikki Sixx co-wrote the haunting theme song “21 Bullets”and Tommy Lee makes a cameo appearance in the rock-infused thriller movie. For more info go to  www.retaliatorsmovie.com

Mötley Crüe remains a huge global draw 41 years into their career and, in the summer of 2022 co-headlined a nearly sold out North American stadium tour with Def Leppard. The tour is set to travel to the rest of the world in 2023.

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock audiences of all ages.  Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. He continues to tour regularly, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for.

His 2021 album “Detroit Stories,” inspired by his hometown’s legacy of rock, debuted on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart at #1, and his recent “Live From The Astroturf” video/audio release recently did the same on the UK’s Official Music Video Chart.

While preparing two new albums for 2023 release, Alice continues to do his nightly “Nights With Alice Cooper” syndicated radio show, and still manages to tour up to six months each year on the road.  Alice Cooper continues to bring his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect of shock-rock, Cooper (in both the original Alice Cooper band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie, even in an era where CNN can present real life shocking images.

Mötley Crüe with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts are performing at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, September 9, 2022 at 4:00 PM.

Mötley Crüe is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981. The group was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, lead guitarist Mick Mars and lead singer Vince Neil. Mötley Crüe has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. They have also achieved seven platinum or multi-platinum certifications, nine Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (including 1989’s Dr. Feelgood, which is Mötley Crüe’s only album to reach number one), twenty-two Top 40 mainstream rock hits, and six Top 20 pop singles. The band experienced several short-term lineup changes in the 1990s and 2000s; these included the introduction of vocalist John Corabi (who was Neil’s replacement from 1992 to 1996) and drummers Randy Castillo and Samantha Maloney, both of whom filled in for Lee following his departure from Mötley Crüe in 1999; he returned to the band in 2004, and their current lineup has been the same as the original since then.

DEF LEPPARD STADIUM TOUR — MORE UPDATES:

  • Def Leppard promises a “drastically different” show for the 2024 summer stadium tour. (A refreshed setlist is most welcome and overdue.)

Quote from Phil Collen’s interview with Ultimate Classic Rock :

“We changed the whole set. You know, there’s a whole screen [production] and we’ve been using pretty much the same stuff for like 12 years. So we’ve changed it completely. The stage show is drastically different. It’s going to take a lot of energy. There’s going to be a lot of running around. So I’m working out, trying to get the stamina up and all of that.”

If the band’s recent Sirius XM Garage performance is any indication, Def Leppard’s Stadium Tour setlist could shake things up a bit.

Here is Def Leppard’s Sirius XM Garage setlist:

Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop) Photograph Too Late for Love Die Hard the Hunter Kick Just Like 73 Foolin’ Billy’s Got a Gun Comin’ Under Fire Rock of Ages Hysteria Pour Some Sugar on Me

PREVIOUS UPDATES:

  • Def Leppard has a brand new song titled “Just Like 73” (read more about it and listen to the track here ) — just in time for the band’s 2024 Stadium Tour (and refreshed concert setlist). Rick Savage revealed the news tidbit during an interview with Stereogum :

“This is hot off the press, but we have just mastered a one-off single, and playing on it is Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine, who was a huge fan back in the day when he was growing up. High ‘n’ Dry was like his Bible. He’s playing a solo on our new single, it’s going to be out there pretty soon.”

Sav recently posted on his Instagram account that the band had been working on a new setlist for the 2024 Stadium Tour with Journey, adding that it will include “a brand new song” and, in acknowledgment of Def Leppard’s new 40th anniversary Pyromania release , “we’ll be throwing a few more of those tracks in as well.” He also teased that their updated Stadium Tour setlist would include “a song we’ve never played live before.”

  • In a recent interview with Nikki Blakk , Rick Allen explained why The Summer Stadium Tour no longer includes Motley Crue, instead featuring Def Leppard co-headlining with Journey (again):

“… We’d been on the road, on and off, with Motley Crue for about 18 months, and we felt as though we kind of covered pretty much everywhere there was to. We started off in the States, went off to Europe, did South America, came back to the States and then Japan and Australia. And we just felt as though we’d been everywhere. We would always wanna tour with those guys, but we just felt as though it was time for each of us to move on.

“Now, we toured with Journey, I forget exactly what year — my memory is terrible; I think 2018, ’17 or ’18 — and it was awesome. I mean, those songs are timeless. And we just thought that it would be great to reach out to them and see if they wanted to do it again. And, lo and behold, they did. So, we just feel as though with a band like us, with a band like Journey, and a band like Steve Miller. I mean, you’re gonna be sitting there in the audience listening to hit songs all night. So, we just feel as though that’s really a good deal, and I think people are really gonna enjoy it.”

(On a related note, Phil Soussan — who is a member of Vivian Campbell’s side band Last In Line — criticized Motley Crue’s Stadium Tour Las Vegas performance on social media (“never seen a place empty out so fast after only a few songs”) after praising Poison (“nothing but a good time”) and Def Leppard (“spectacular and pristine”)…but quickly took it back and apologized to Nikki Sixx). Here’s a review of the tour’s Los Angeles show . More Stadium Tour concert reviews: Cleveland , Arizona , and another one for Los Angeles .

FYI: The thoughts & opinions critiquing The Stadium Tour in the post below were written soon after the tour was originally announced in late 2019. Enjoy!

After weeks of rumors, it’s finally official: Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts are going on tour together.

“The Stadium Tour” (as it’s officially called) will be traveling across the U.S. and parts of Canada. (Tour dates and ticket information can be found here .)

Def Leppard Motley Crue Poison Stadium tour

I’d like to add another word: Why?

Questioning this tour — specifically, a Def Leppard, Motley Crue tour — may be unpopular, but from a Def Leppard fan perspective, I ask again: Why?

I’m sure some can easily come up with financially motivated reasons, but I digress.

Let’s really dig deep and delve into this tour event!

Def Leppard, Motley Crue Stadium Tour: Do You Really, Really Want To Do This Tour?

Even though this site is Def Leppard-centric (obviously), that’s not to say yours truly has anything against Mötley Crüe’s catalog of music.

But why pair up Def Leppard with Mötley Crüe, and why do it now?

No doubt a Def Leppard, Motley Crue tour package is a concert promoter’s dream. Well-known acts, each with large fan bases who will happily pay to take part in the concert event.

And though I’m not here to speak for Mötley Crüe fans, let’s take a look at their band’s “return” to touring.

Cessation From The Cessation

If Mötley Crüe hadn’t made such an extravaganza of their “Cessation of Touring” contract — a publicity stunt in hindsight — it might be a bit easier to buy into their return, let alone for this new tour.

Just a bit.

Motley Crue Cessation of Tour press conference

Press conferences with gravestones, posing with their signed “Cessation of Touring” contract, etc., etc., etc.

Motley Crue Cessation of Tour press conference

That’s NOT to say many aren’t genuinely surprised their farewell tour was for not, but that doesn’t mean some of their fans don’t feel duped, sadly, at the expense of their own band.

And who can blame them, especially when Mötley Crüe’s members REPEATEDLY assured everyone that their farewell tour was truly their last?

Some notable quotes from Nikki Sixx:

“There are people in this band who will refuse to ever do it again, and you’re talking to one of them.”

“There is no amount of money that would ever make me do it again because I have such pride in how we’re ending it.”

“We want to have some dignity.” (during the “Cessation of Touring” contract signing)

“If we did agree [to another tour] , the way we’ve set it up…we’d have so much egg on our face. We have so much pride that that alone would stop it.”

And just a quick counterpoint to those quotes from Def Leppard’s Phil Collen (from earlier this year):

“We are having an Indian summer and it’s because we have this integrity. We never stopped, actually, in the 40-odd years that the band’s been together. We just keep going through thick and thin, all the bad stuff, good stuff. And I think that shows, and we’re just enjoying this Indian summer.”

Moving right along.

The Dirt on… The Dirt

This article is ultimately about Def Leppard (we’ll get there, I promise), but I need to revisit one of the marketing angles Mötley Crüe has been using to validate their return to touring, in addition to comments made by Mötley Crüe’s manager.

Mötley Crüe has been saying as a result of the MASSIVE success of the band’s Netflix movie The Dirt , a whole new “generation” of Mötley Crüe fans — who missed out on seeing the band live — are demanding their return.

Ok, let’s go with that for a moment.

How long had it been since Mötley Crüe’s last “farewell” tour date?

Less than four years.

47 months, give or take a few days.

A little over 34,000 hours.

No wonder that iron-clad agreement was blown up — a “generation” of fans missed out on seeing the band’s last tour in…2015!

But let’s put that aside.

Was this supposed newfound demand for Mötley Crüe’s return really due to The Dirt ‘s “massive” success (and new tracks added to the film’s soundtrack), which they said resulted in the band becoming “more popular than ever”?

Maybe Mötley Crüe’s cover of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” will make it onto their Stadium Tour setlist for the “legion of new fans” who only know them from The Dirt — after all, it is on the soundtrack .

Maybe, maybe not.

There’s absolutely no doubt a large portion of Mötley Crüe fans — new and old — are ecstatic that their band is coming back to tour.

But mixed feelings are understandable, too.

And while some question Vince Neil’s vocal abilities, if Mötley Crüe truly feels their return is due to overwhelming fan demand, it’s absolutely their decision and prerogative.

More power to them. Let Mötley Crüe be Mötley Crüe.

But why pull Def Leppard into this tour scenario?

Def Leppard Motley Crue stadium tour

But would a stadium tour have been warranted if Mötley Crüe went out on their own reunion tour?

Maybe that gargantuan legion of new fans from The Dirt isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. (Discussing The Dirt during an interview , Mötley Crüe’s manager Allen Kovac touted “tens of millions of people saw the film,” adding “I think the data is equal to [Martin Scorsese’s movie] The Irishman. ” Yet The Dirt wasn’t even included in Netflix’s Top 10 most popular movies of 2019 , which included The Irishman at #5.)

Separately, Poison’s Bret Michaels said in an interview that he worked on making a Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe tour happen “for years.” If true, that also doesn’t mesh with the narrative that Mötley Crüe reconsidered their “Cessation of Touring” only after The Dirt ‘s success.

I think some Mötley Crüe fans would have been more accepting if the band was more on the level about why they were returning.

Why not go back out on the road with their own “Nevermind!” tour?

Some honesty and levity would probably go a long way.

Def Leppard Motley Crue Stadium Tour: Who’s REALLY Headlining?

A rumor that floated around the web prior to the official tour announcement was that Mötley Crüe would be headlining “The Stadium Tour.”

Since then, it’s been announced that it will be a “co-headlining tour” with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe switching off on who closes the show in certain cities.

“Headlining” is a subjective term though — realistically, it’s the bands’ paydays (among other things) that will ultimately determine which band is TRULY considered and rewarded as the headliner.

Based on the information that made the rounds online prior to the tour’s announcement, it was revealed that the concert payday will allegedly be 2-to-1 in favor of Mötley Crüe over Def Leppard . Put another way, Mötley Crüe is being paid twice as much — double! — what Def Leppard is earning.

It’s interesting (and not surprising) to see how a more balanced approach is being taken publicly, alternating each band’s logo placement in marketing materials.

For example, Def Leppard’s official newsletter announcement features top placement for Def Leppard!

Def Leppard Motley Crue Newsletter Stadium Tour announcement

Just a minute.

Did you notice which band is listed first in the Stadium Tour official press release announcement? It’s Mötley Crüe.

How about the poster art which was included with the Stadium Tour’s press release?

The top left priority placement went to Mötley Crüe.

Ok, how about having a “neutral” party be the deciding factor? Live Nation (the concert’s promoter) sent out an e-mail about the tour announcement.

Which band received priority (top left) placement in Live Nation’s e-mail graphic and messaging? Mötley Crüe.

Def Leppard Motley Crue stadium tour

All of these materials are extensively thought through, legally decided, and approved.

So what does this mean?

Frankly, it means that Mötley Crüe and their management are marketing geniuses: their non-farewell “farewell” tour worked out splendidly and to their advantage. They monetized their farewell to the hilt and generated a whole new level of interest to exploit “reuniting” merely a few years later.

They even made sure to time “The Stadium Tour” announcement with a newly created social media “Mötley Crüe is Back” hashtag (presented in the form of an image ) to encourage fans to utilize the hashtag and get it trending.

Motley Crue Is Back

The Real Dirt on The Dirt

It’s quite interesting that Mötley Crüe’s manager had been touting his band’s successes in the months prior to The Stadium Tour announcement, calling out bands from the ’80s era — and specifically Def Leppard and Poison — saying they were no longer on the radio charts . He also went on to say that only a few select bands from that earlier era still have the ability to accomplish that feat, namely Metallica and, of course, Mötley Crüe.

So let’s really take a look at the recent success Mötley Crüe has enjoyed, and whether that popularity is potentially inflated.

The Dirt soundtrack (an album mostly comprised of the band’s greatest hits) debuted on Billboard ‘s top albums chart at #10. (It was the band’s first top 10 album in more than a decade.)

In its first week, 15,000 albums of the soundtrack were sold, and after mixing in digital sales, the total came out to a little less than 30,000 units in equivalent album sales.

For sake of comparison, Def Leppard’s 2015 studio album (the self-titled Def Leppard ) sold 30,000 copies in its first week. It was also a top 10 album but was comprised of all-new music (not a greatest hits release).

Following The Dirt Netflix premiere, there was boasting that the band’s catalog album sales soared 683% (according to Billboard ), but let’s put that in perspective by calling out another data point that is conveniently overlooked: Billboard also noted that the band’s album sales the week prior to the premiere totaled only 2,000 units.

So a catalog sales increase of nearly 700% is quite impressive, but much less so when it’s calculated off of a base amount that’s practically non-existent.

Gotta love marketing and PR spin!

The movie’s title song “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” ended up reaching the top 10 on Billboard ‘s niche Mainstream Rock Songs chart. (Mötley Crüe last appeared on that chart’s Top 10 with “ Saints of Los Angeles ,” which achieved an even higher rank, reaching #5 in 2008.)

I’m going to stop there in terms of chart analysis even though further points can be made to dispute Mötley Crüe’s stance about them being “more popular than ever” as a result of The Dirt .

In the end, Mötley Crüe can do as they please, and they can go about their reunion with whatever storyline they feel suits them best, but from a Def Leppard perspective, it is so unnecessary for the boys from Sheffield to partake in the spectacle.

Def Leppard: Welcome To The Carnival

Def Leppard practically tours yearly (pre-pandemic), riding the wave of a resurgence that’s elevated the band to a whole new level of notoriety four decades into their career.

One of the most thrilling aspects of their “Sin City” Las Vegas residency was that they shook up — or, at the least, began to shake up — their concert setlist. (You can read all about it here .)

Def Leppard Sin City Zappos Residency poster

This helped refresh the band’s live show, especially for fans who frequently see them on tour.

Now, a Def Leppard, Motley Crue tour (“co-headlining” or not) puts limitations on the band’s setlist once again, as they’ll have a shorter timeslot (likely 90 minutes or less) to work from — regardless of which band closes out the show.

That’s a shame.

Joe Elliott confirmed this in an interview with RollingStone.com :

“We’re not going to be digging into deep tracks, album cuts, and obscure B-sides like we tended to do when we did the Vegas residencies.”

He also went on to describe The Stadium Tour this way:

“We’re trying to turn these shows into a mini-festival… we’re all from the same genre. Most people that like that kind of thing saw us day after day on MTV in the Eighties.  Our journeys have gone in different directions since then, but synchronicity pulls us back together once again.”

The word “synchronicity” really stands out in Joe’s comment, and therein lies another point worth making.

There’s no doubt Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe have crossover fans, but I wouldn’t call putting these two bands on tour together a match made in heaven.

Other bands would have meshed much better with Def Leppard and their fanbase, all the while creating a high-profile tour attraction.

So without further ado, let’s have some fun…and imagine what could have been better 2020 Def Leppard tour options.

An Open Letter To Def Leppard & Their Management

Here are several other 2020 proposed tour packages that would have been just as, if not more, appealing to Def Leppard fans .

1) Def Leppard and Bon Jovi

Joe Elliott and Jon Bon Jovi

I know many passionate fans take sides in a Def Leppard vs. Bon Jovi matchup , and there is a spirited, friendly competition between the two bands, but there’s no denying touring together would have complemented one another’s body of work and their fanbases.

It would be newsworthy, memorable, and definitely provide a lot of excitement…and synchronicity!

2) Def Leppard and Whitesnake

David Coverdale and Joe Elliott

It’s been done internationally, so why not a full-fledged U.S. tour?

Pairing up the two bands would not only be a powerhouse concert lineup, but it would also be a must-see tour for both bands’ collective fanbases.

By the way, I have no issue with Poison (or Joan Jett & The Blackhearts) being part of next year’s summer tour. That said, I would also have no issue with including other bands in their place to make this type of hypothetical tour event even more special.

There are plenty of noteworthy bands to choose from that concertgoers would love to see be part of a Def Leppard/Whitesnake (or Bon Jovi) tour: Cinderella, Skid Row (with Sebastian Bach returning, of course), L.A. Guns, Tesla, etc.

Take your pick!

A tour package overflowing with “synchronicity.”

3) Def Leppard, Queen, and The Struts

Def Leppard and Queen's Brian May

Def Leppard has spoken countless times about Queen’s musical influence. To have Queen be part of a Def Leppard tour, performing the songs beloved by so many fans (including Def Leppard) would be a wonderful, celebratory event in and of itself.

That’s why it would also be so fitting if The Struts — a band Joe Elliott has sung the praises of countless times — was the opening act.

The Struts

Unique, unforgettable, crackling with glam rock energy, and something many fans would thoroughly enjoy being a part of.

“We Will, We Will Rock You…Till You Drop!”

4) Def Leppard and Scorpions

Def Leppard and The Scorpions

How fitting would it have been if Def Leppard — who once opened for Scorpions in 1980 in support of their On Through The Night album — returned the favor?

“Synchronicity” galore!

Call it the “ The Rhythm of Love Bites ” tour.” How about the “ Rocket Like A Hurricane ” tour?

Ok, kidding aside, the point is there would be great synergy — from the music to the bands, to the fans in attendance. All would complementary.

Now let’s change gears for just a moment…

Def Leppard and… Journey?

Def Leppard Journey tour

Def Leppard and Journey already hooked up for a very successful “stadium tour.”

Their 2018 tour grossed nearly $100 million and sold over 1 million tickets .

How about Journey reuniting with Steve Perry and going out on tour with Def Leppard? Now that would be a completely different type of Def Leppard and Journey tour!

But, wait, you know what? A Journey/Steve Perry reunion tour wouldn’t necessarily need Def Leppard on the bill: Steve Perry reuniting with Journey could survive — and thrive! — touring on their own.

The same goes for why Def Leppard isn’t touring with KISS ( on their latest farewell tour ) again, or a reunited Guns ‘n’ Roses for their “Not In This Lifetime…” tour .

Because, frankly, neither band needs “a Def Leppard” on their bill.

This brings us full circle: Mötley Crüe should not have to be on a shared bill with Def Leppard. They should be able to go at it alone — after all, they’re “more popular than ever,” right?

That being said, the same applies to Def Leppard: They can go it alone, too.

This brings us to the fifth and final proposed tour, and it’s in response to those that have called the Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Joan Jett tour a welcomed “nostalgia act.”

There’s a much better nostalgic option for Def Leppard fans.

5) Def Leppard: In-The-Round In-Your-Face Again

Def Leppard Hysteria tour In The Round Stage Curtain

So many concertgoers who experienced it decades ago loved it, while newer generations of fans missed out and never had the chance to witness it themselves.

Well, this would be their chance.

While we’re at it, bring back any number of the bands that were originally part of Def Leppard’s Hysteria tour to be part of the extravaganza: Tesla, Cinderella, L.A. Guns, Europe.

That would be quite a must-see event.

Granted, an in-the-round concert is physically challenging for Def Leppard — it was even a workout back in their Hysteria tour days — but this proposed in-the-round return is not based around a massive 200+ date tour that lasts years.

It could be treated as a limited-time event, spaced out to provide the band with adequate rest between dates and arenas — that’s right, arenas, not stadiums. Arenas will allow the band to reach more cities (and fans) who can partake in the special event.

I can go on about some of the exciting, jaw-dropping, nostalgic things Def Leppard could do to really amplify this type of in-the-round event, but I’ll leave it at that for now.

In the end, no matter the age of Def Leppard’s concertgoers, an in-the-round stage show would be worth experiencing at least one last time.

Def Leppard, Motley Crue Stadium Tour: Final Thoughts

If you’ve read any number of posts on this site, you’re used to seeing Def Leppard’s “brand” and promotional strategies over the decades analyzed and even scrutinized .

I assure you that any and all critiques come from a good place. (By the way, if you really want to go in-depth and indulge in Def Leppard, check out this must-read book !)

That being said, I believe any of the proposed tours listed above would reward and benefit Def Leppard and its legacy, not to mention the band’s fans.

With all due respect, this “co-headlining” tour potentially tarnishes Def Leppard’s brand a bit and doesn’t allow the band to shine to its full potential, especially at this point in its stellar career.

Def Leppard Motley Crue Tour photoshoot

But it didn’t have to be done this way.

Mötley Crüe should have known better, from the narrative they fed their fans about never ever touring again, to the reasoning they chose to use to reunite so quickly .

And Def Leppard could have done better for themselves and for their fans.

There were better touring options worth exploring.

Much, much better.
