9 Little-Known Ways to Save Time and Money at Walgreens Pharmacy

If you’re not live-chatting with your pharmacist, you’re doing it wrong.

Walgreens Pharmacy

You know Walgreens as the place you can pick up anything from a prescription to a great new nail polish. But you may not realize that the popular drugstore also offers a host of helpful services that can make shopping for meds (and taking them!) a bit less stressful, like an app that lets you live-chat with a pharmacist 24/7 and a rewards program that can help you save money.

Here, Danielle Berger, PharmD, a Walgreens pharmacist and store manager in Charlotte, North Carolina, gives Good Housekeeping the scoop on these services—and seven others!—that there’s a good chance you aren’t aware of.

1. Pharmacy Chat

2. Scan to Refill

Prescription Drug Bottles

With the free Walgreens App , Berger says, “You can refill your medication just by scanning the bottle—you don’t even have to call the pharmacy.” On top of that you can also select a pick-up time to ensure your Rx will be good to go when you arrive. Or better yet, you can have your meds delivered straight to your home.

3. 90-Day Refills

If you take maintenance (or regular, long-term) medications, like cholesterol-lowering statins, you can also opt for 90-day refills ** through the app. That way, you only have to pick up your prescription once every three months—instead of every four weeks. Not sure if your insurance will allow you to stock up? Ask your pharmacist to check into this for you.

4. Bundled Prescription Pick-up

Directly Above Shot Of To Do List On Laptop

It’s a hassle when your prescriptions are ready for pick-up on different days. With the Save a Trip *** program, pharmacists sync up your prescriptions, so they’re all ready on the same day, saving you multiple trips to the drugstore. “This makes things so much more convenient and increases adherence —aka, you taking your meds exactly as prescribed,” Berger says

5. Text Alerts

Woman using smart phone infront of wall

“With Walgreens text alerts , you get a message as soon as your prescription is ready,” says Berger. You can also receive updates on the status of your prescription and even learn the cost before you pick it up. To sign up, text JOINRX to 21525. Once you’ve registered, you can also text REFILL when you’re ready to request more of your prescription.

6. Prescription Delivery

Crop girl with blue credit card

Another perk of signing up for text alerts? You’ll gain access to Walgreens Express ****, a service that lets you pay for prescriptions in advance, so you can either skip the line at the pharmacy or have them delivered to your home free of charge.

7. Pill Reminders

don't forget

Need help remembering to take your meds? The Walgreens App lets you set up reminders that pop up on your phone screen (even when it’s locked), says Berger.

8. Immunizations (for the Flu and Beyond)

You probably know that you can get the flu shot at Walgreens. But that’s not the only vaccination available at the pharmacy . You can also get travel immunizations, as well as vaccines for pneumonia, shingles, tetanus, and more, says Berger. Depending on the state you live in and the vaccine you need, your doctor may need to send in a prescription, which Berger says they’re usually happy to do.

9. Cost-Saving Rewards

Savings.

With the Balance Rewards program, you earn points for every dollar you spend at the store. (Every thousand points equals $1 toward a future purchase). In most states, you can also earn points when you pick up your prescriptions (even if there’s no copay) and when you get an immunization.

Plus, through Balance Rewards for healthy choices (a branch of the main rewards program), you earn points when you log healthy behaviors—like walking or lowering your blood pressure. Simply sync your smartwatch or phone to track your activity and earn points automatically!

Only available in English.

**Potential copay savings vary by insurance plan.

***Valid only with certain medications at participating stores. There is no cost for the Save a Trip Refills® service. Copayment amounts may be prorated. Other restrictions may apply. See pharmacist for more details. You may select multiple/two pickup dates to offset prescription costs.

****Walgreens Express: Walgreens Express is available on eligible prescriptions only. Most prescription orders are available to be delivered to the patient's home in 1–2 days. Walgreens, your pharmacy network provider.

Jump to Home Delivery

Johns Hopkins USFHP’s network includes all Walgreens pharmacies — over 9,000 locations and growing. Walgreens offers many digital tools to help you manage your family’s medications and track your healthy behaviors to earn rewards.

Walgreens offers two ways for USFHP members to receive prescriptions: home delivery, for up to a 90-day supply of approved medications, and retail pharmacy pickup for a 30-day supply of everyday medications or a 90-day supply of medications for a chronic condition. The Walgreens website and app offer automatic refills and other convenient options to make this even easier.

At some Walgreens locations, you can receive many common vaccinations such as flu, pneumonia and shingles.

Search for local Walgreens pharmacies that are in the USFHP pharmacy network by visiting the Caremark Pharmacy Locator  and entering your ZIP code, city and state, or county and state.

Please note that the USFHP pharmacy network is limited to Walgreens pharmacies. Military Treatment Facility and government/federal military pharmacies, including Veterans Affairs (VA) pharmacies cannot be used. Some Walgreens-owned pharmacies on this site may still be listed as Rite Aid. Please check with the pharmacy that it is a Walgreens-owned pharmacy.

Contact customer service at  410-424-4528  or  800-808-7347  if you need assistance finding a network pharmacy.

Filling your prescription

You may obtain your prescriptions at any Walgreens pharmacy nationwide or through home delivery.

Click here  to review your Walgreens pharmacy prescription refill options.

Note:  You may not obtain prescriptions from a military treatment facility while enrolled in USFHP. Prescriptions that originated at a military treatment facility may not be transferable to Walgreens pharmacies.

Any prescriptions filled outside the USFHP pharmacy network in a non-emergent situation may be subject to review to determine if the amount submitted should be reimbursed in full, less applicable copayment. To obtain reimbursement, complete the Pharmacy Prescription Reimbursement Claim Form, and mail to the address provided on the form.

Walgreens’ Tools

Receiving Your Prescriptions

Home delivery.

Home delivery is available to USFHP members for up to a 90-day supply of approved medications through Walgreens pharmacy. Home delivery is best suited for medications you take on a regular basis.

If you live in Maryland , you may obtain your prescription through home delivery by completing the  Maryland mail order form  and sending it in with your new prescription, plus a check or credit card number for your copayment, to the address listed on the form. To ensure you receive a refill before your current supply runs out, reorder at least two weeks before you need your refill.

Walgreens Pharmacy 2700 Remington Ave. Baltimore, MD 21211 Phone:  410-235-2128 Fax:  410-889-1609

If you live outside of Maryland , you may obtain your prescription through home delivery from AllianceRx Walgreens Prime Pharmacy, located in Arizona. For more information, visit the  AllianceRX Walgreens Pharmacy  website or view their  brochure .

Fill out the  home delivery registration and prescription order form  and mail to:

AllianceRx Walgreens Prime Pharmacy P.O. Box 29061 Phoenix, AZ 85038-9601 Phone:  800-345-1985  TTY:  800-573-1833 En Español:  800-778-5427  TTY:  877-220-6173 Hours of operation:24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Retail pharmacy pick-up

Fill and pick up your prescriptions at any of our network pharmacies nationwide without having to submit a claim. Through our retail pharmacy network, you can fill a 30-day supply of your everyday medications, or a 90-day supply of medications for a chronic condition, for the same copay as home delivery. To fill a prescription, present your Johns Hopkins USFHP member ID card to the pharmacist with your prescription.  Your ID card contains important information to allow the pharmacy to process your claim correctly. You will be responsible for a portion of the cost of the medications, or copay. Copays are subject to change at TRICARE’s discretion. The TRICARE formulary contains three cost levels for USFHP members.

Use the TRICARE formulary search tool to see whether a specific drug is covered and its cost share .

Pharmacy Prescription Reimbursement Claim Form

Specialty medications.

Specialty medications typically require special storage and handling and may not be readily available at your local pharmacy. Specialty medications may also have side effects that require pharmacist and/or nurse monitoring. Many specialty medications (oral and injectable) are available through the retail pharmacy network. However, some medications may not be available at all retail locations because the medication’s manufacturer limits the medication to specific pharmacies. If your physician submits a request for use of a restricted distribution drug and we approve it, we will forward the request to a contracted specialty pharmacy. The specialty pharmacy will coordinate delivery of the medication to patient’s home or physician office.

In the event that you fill a prescription at a non-network pharmacy due to an emergent situation, you may seek reimbursement for incurred cost. Download

Medication adherence: Why it’s important and how Walgreens can help

By Emily Shafer, PharmD Dec 28, 2022 • 5 min

Out of the 3.8 billion prescriptions written every year, 1 in 5 is never filled and about half of those that are filled are taken incorrectly, according to the CDC.

Not taking your medication (called being nonadherent) could make your disease or condition worse, cause you to be hospitalized or even lead to death. Find out other ways missing your prescription could affect you, plus simple steps to help you stay on track.

What is adherence?

Medication adherence is when you take the correct amount of your medications at the correct frequency and time interval each day, as recommended by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Nonadherence means the medication may not be taken at the right time, at the correct dose, at the right number of doses each day, or for the correct duration of time.

The costs of nonadherence

Nonadherence leads to poor outcomes, such as making a disease or condition worse. In the United States, not taking your medication correctly is estimated to cause about 125,000 deaths and at least 10% of hospitalizations every year.

Nonadherence is also very expensive. It increases the likelihood that you’ll need to see your healthcare provider again or go to the hospital. Over time, this leads to the insurance companies increasing copayment and deductibles, which means you’ll eventually likely pay more money out of your own pocket. Medication nonadherence has been estimated to cost the U.S. healthcare system between $100 billion and $289 billion annually. While filling the entire prescription and taking it exactly as prescribed costs more money up front, not taking your medicine as prescribed may end up costing you more in the long run.

Why nonadherence occurs

It’s not uncommon for people to simply forget to take their prescription or to pick up a refill. Some may have a hard time understanding when they should take the medication, especially when taking multiple medicines at different times of day. Others may have a difficult time paying for the medication, not understand how and when it is supposed to work, or how long their healthcare provider would like them to take the medication. Some people may also stop taking a prescription if they begin to feel better, if they feel like it’s not working or if they are experiencing side effects. Additional factors for nonadherence may include not being able to read and understand prescription labels or having cultural barriers that make it challenging to communicate with the healthcare team.

How we can help with adherence

This can all be overwhelming, but Walgreens is here to help. We have a number of programs to help you and your family fill, understand and stay adherent to your medications. From offering  Save a Trip Refills® , where you can schedule a recurring pickup date for all your prescriptions, to receiving text alerts and refill reminders when it’s time to refill a medication, or providing 90-day supplies of chronic medications, Walgreens is committed to making prescription refills more convenient to support medication adherence.

The Walgreens App  is also a great tool to help you fill and take your medications. You can log in to your personal account to see all of your prescription medications, refill them with the touch of a button and manage your auto refills. The Pill Reminder is very helpful for anyone who may have a hard time remembering to take their medications, especially if you have a complicated schedule to keep organized.

Our pharmacists are always available to answer your questions about your prescriptions, in our stores, on the phone or online through  Pharmacy Chat , on the Walgreens App or website. Your pharmacist is a crucial part of your healthcare team and is ready to help you with all of your medication needs.
