A conglomeration of two small villages named Sana and Sar, Sanasar, also known a mini Gulmarg, is located on the outskirts of Patnitop, and is one of the remotest towns in India. The mountain range in the shadow of which this small town lies is known as Shanta Ridge. Here, you will find the Shanta Gala, a pass that offers uninterrupted vistas of the picturesque Panchari Valley below. This pass also allows visitors access to the village of Lander.

A short walk away from Sanasar lies the Shank Pal Ridge, at the top of which lies the Shank Pal Temple, almost 400 years old and constructed at an altitude of 2,800 m. The unique aspect of this temple is that no mortar has been used to join the stones.

One can also rent small huts surrounded by lush green deodar trees and enjoy the natural beauty of the place. The cup-shaped meadow has a golf course if you want to try your hand at the sport. Adventure sports enthusiasts can visit this place to indulge in activities like paragliding, rock climbing, abseiling, paragliding, parasailing and hot-air ballooning. Another highlight of Sanasar is horseback riding.

Sanasar is the name given to the two small villages of Sana and Sar in Jammu province, Jammu and Kashmir state, India. Named after small local lakes, Sana and Sar are located 20 km west of Patnitop, Udhampur district on the national highway 1A. A nearby mountain range is called the Shanta Ridge. The Shank Pal Temple is located at the highest point of the Shank Pal ridge, at an altitude of 2,800 metres, a few hours’ walk from Sanasar. The 400-year-old temple is dedicated to Nag Shank Pal. No mortar was used to join the stones of the temple. Shanta Gala is a pass on the Shanta ridge which offers a view of the Panchari valley on the other side of the ridge. The pass leads to the Lander area.

Sanasar is basically a group of two small villages of Sana and Sar which are located in the Jammu province. Located at a distance of around 20 km west of Patnitop, these islands were named after 2 small local lakes that go by the same name.

There is also a mountain range nearby that is known as the Shanta Ridge. This place is situated at an altitude of around 2,800 meters and apparently, the views from up above are simply magnificent and something to cherish all your life.

Sanasar is a kind of place which is a must-visit and must explore destination owing to its rich natural aura. It won’t be wrong to consider this place as one of the hidden gems of Kashmir. From paragliding to camping to trekking, there are just too many options for a tourist to discover Sanasar in a completely new dimension and in a completely new light, every time they visit this place. 

The best time to visit Sanasar is from the months of May to June and September to October. The overall weather conditions during this time in Sanasar are very pleasant and comfortable for travelling around. 

Major Attractions in and Around Sanasar

1. naag mandir.

Situated near Patnitop, this temple dates back to 600 years. And, during the Naag Panchami festival, it sees literally thousands of Shiva devotees who throng this place to worship their beloved god. It is one of the best places to visit in Sanasar.

2. Shank Pal Temple

The Shank Pal Temple is located at an altitude of around 2,800 m. It is considered that this temple is around 400 years old. And it particularly takes a 5-hour trek from Sanasar to reach this temple. Furthermore, it is interesting to know that no mortar has been used to join the stones of this temple.

3. Suri Kund

It is basically a small pond which is located on the Shank Pal ridge at a distance of 2 km from the Shank Pal Nag temple. Furthermore, it needs to be seen that for any regular person it would take at least a 7-hour long trek to reach this destination.

4. Rock Climbing in WAC

Situated among high conifers, the rocky regions of the Sanasar are quite famous for rock climbing and trekking activities. And if you are visiting with someone who likes adventures then you must try this activity at WAC. 

5. Shopping

If you visit Sanasar, then there is a possibility that you may not find too many options here for shopping. However, for a great shopping experience, one may head to the nearby towns of Jammu and Patnitop where you will come across a lot of options such as wooden carvings, shawls, sweets, and many other things. 

How to Reach Sanasar

Sana and Sar are two adorable villages located in Jammu. People who are always ready to go on adventures and exotic places, this place would make them fall in love with itself. To reach here, you will need to cover a total distance of approximately 672, 2,036, 2,190, 2,835 km from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru respectively. Check out the following details on how you can reach Sanasar via different means of public transportation. 

The nearest airport is Jammu Airport (IXJ) situated (approx) 130 km away. Jammu airport is a civil enclave airport and was ranked as the 27th busiest airport in India as per the data of 2013-2014. Overall, the airport has good flight connectivity with direct and connecting flights from various cities. After deboarding at the airport, you will need to book a taxi or avail some other means of transportation options available to reach your destination. 

  • From Chandigarh - Board Air India, Spicejet, IndiGo flights from Chandigarh Airport. The airfares start from INR 5,000 - INR 8,000
  • From Lucknow - Board IndiGo, Air India flights from Lucknow AIrport. The air tickets will cost you about INR 5,000 - INR 10,000

Jammu Tawi railway station is the nearest railhead to Sanasar situated at a distance of about 132km. Once you have reached the station, you can hire a cab or get a bus to get to your destination. It is very well connected with other Indian cities. Like from Delhi you can board NDLS JAT SPL from New Delhi Railway Station and deboard at Jammu Tawi Station. 

Sanasar is well-connected by road networks that are well-maintained, motorable and quite easily accessible. If you want, then from the nearby regions like Srinagar and Jammu you can book buses which frequently connect Sanasar to and fro with other nearby cities. Taxis are also easily available from nearby cities and towns. The name Sanasar is a combination of two names. Sanasar is the name given to the two small villages of Sana and Sar in Jammu province, India. It is located at a distance of 119 km from Jammu and only 17 km from Patnitop. Sanasar is named after small local lakes, ‘Sana’ & ‘Sar’. These two lakes are located 17 km west of Patnitop. It is located on the national highway 1A, in the Jammu province of the state of Jammu & Kashmir , India. Sanasar is a beautiful town located at an altitude of 2050 meters.

It is run by “Extreme Himalayan Adventures” in collaboration with the Dept of Tourism, Jammu. Camping is the best way to enjoy your time in the lap of nature in the wilderness. You will get to stay amidst the lush greenery if you are planning to camp here. Do not worry if you do not have any camping equipment with you to carry. They provide camping services at the best prices and you can make most of it. They provide you with all the equipment like tents, sleeping bags, and other necessary equipment.
