What is Canyoneering?

If you're a true adventurer, exploring Zion, Kanab, and Orderville with Roam Outdoor Adventure Co. should undoubtedly be on your bucket list.

Canyoneering is the art of exploring canyons by combining various outdoor activities like hiking, rappelling, UTV rides, swimming and more. It’s an exhilarating way to immerse yourself in Southern Utah’s natural wonders as you navigate through narrow, winding canyons carved by millennia of water erosion.

In Southern Utah’s monuments and tourist areas such as Zion National Park, Kanab, and Orderville, canyoneering provides a unique opportunity to venture deep into the heart of the area, unveiling hidden treasures inaccessible via conventional hiking routes.

Visiting a Slot Canyon

There’s nothing quite like the Kanab, Orderville, and Zion slot canyons–conquering one of these areas many out-of-this-world canyons will be of the most unique experiences of your life. Need more convincing? Here are some reasons you should put canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville with ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co. at the top of your list.

Spectacular natural beauty : Zion National Park and its surrounding areas are renowned for their towering red rock formations, and their slot canyons are no exception. These twisting canyons showcase Southern Utah’s breathtaking views, sculpted walls, and vibrant colors. Every step is a visual delight.

Uncommon adventure : Canyoneering offers an intimate thrill. You’ll climb, scramble, swim, and rappel through tight spaces, experiencing the rush of adrenaline that comes with conquering nature’s challenges.

Escape the crowds : While many visitors explore the park’s more popular trails, ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co will guide your through less trafficked canyoneering areas allows you to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in serene, untouched wilderness.

Unforgettable memories : Zion’s slot canyons provide ample opportunities for stunning photography. You’ll capture memories for a lifetime, from the play of the light on the canyon walls to the sparkling pools of water.

The best local guides : The expert guides at Roam Outdoor Adventure Co. play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Their knowledge of the terrain, coupled with their passion for the outdoors, elevates each tour beyond a mere adventure; it becomes an educational journey where participants learn about the geological history, habitat of the region, and animal life that make Southern Utah a unique and cherished destination.

When is the Best Time for Canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville?

At ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co., our commitment to providing exceptional outdoor experiences extends throughout the year, and we believe that canyoneering in Zion, Kanab, or Orderville is an adventure that can be enjoyed in every season. This philosophy is reflected in our year-round tour offerings, allowing you to explore the canyons of Southern Utah regardless of the month. However, it's essential to recognize that while canyoneering is a thrilling activity that transcends seasons, the weather will always remain the deciding factor to the overall experience enjoyment and accessibility to certain slot canyons.

For that reason, we recommend the best time of year for canyoneering in Zion, Kanab or Orderville to be spring, summer, and fall. The warmer, dryer months offer mild temperatures and fewer chances for flash flooding, making your adventure more comfortable.

For time of day, daylight hours, especially the early mornings and late afternoons, are best for enjoying Zion canyoneering. These times offer cooler temperatures in the summer, softer lighting for photography, and a more pleasant experience overall. Additionally, the slot canyons tend to be less crowded during these times so that you can savor the natural solitude and serenity.

To ensure your safety, we recommend always checking the weather forecast before setting out to the canyons and making sure you have plenty of daylight hours for exploration.

Canyoneering Safety Tips

Safety in canyoneering is simple as long as you show up prepared and plan accordingly so you have everything you need. Here’s our safety checklist.

Have proper canyoneering gear : Ensure you have the necessary canyoneering equipment, including harnesses, helmets, ropes, descenders, carabiners, and any specialized gear required for the specific canyon you plan to explore. (More on this below.)

Wear proper clothing and shoes: Dress appropriately for the conditions, including moisture-wicking layers and sturdy shoes with good traction. Dressing in layers allows you to adapt to changing temperatures.

Stay weather aware : Always check the weather forecast before you head out. Avoid canyoneering during storms, as flash floods can be life-threatening in the narrow slot canyons.

Never go alone : Canyoneering is safest when done in a group. Make sure you have at least one partner with you who is experienced in canyoneering and familiar with the route.

Stay on the marked trails : Stick to established routes and marked trails to minimize the environmental impact and reduce the risk of getting lost in the canyons.

Plan ahead and know where you’re going : Study maps, route descriptions, and topographical information before your trip. Familiarize yourself with the canyon’s features and potential obstacles.

Bring sufficient water and food : Carry an ample water supply to stay hydrated. Pack energy-rich snacks and meals to sustain your energy throughout the day.

Bring a first aid kit : Carry a well-equipped first aid kit that includes items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister treatment, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need.

While it may seem like a comprehensive list of requirements, rest assured that when you book a rappelling or canyoneering tour with ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co. in Zion, Kanab, or Orderville, you won't have to go through the hassle of gathering an extensive array of canyoneering gear. We take pride in equipping our participants with everything they need for a secure, comfortable, and delightful adventure.

Permits for Canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville

Canyoneering permits are required for all Zion National park canyons requiring descending gear or ropes. Permits protect resources, manage visitor encounter rates, and educate users on safety concerns and resource protections.

A lottery system is in place for Zion permits–it is not guaranteed you will be able to obtain one of the dates of your choice. Study the Zion National Park website to learn when to apply for your necessary permits. Further, you must pick up your permit in person at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and it cannot be transferred to another person. The permits range in price from $15-$25.

By opting for a canyoneering tour with ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co., you can sidestep the complexities of the permit process, allowing us to guide you through the slot canyons without the need for our participants to navigate the intricacies of the permit system. This ensures a seamless and hassle-free experience, allowing you to focus solely on the thrill of the adventure in the stunning landscapes surrounding Zion.

Is There a Weight Limit for Canyoneering?

There is a weight limit of 250 pounds for canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville. If you're hoping to visit the slot canyons but do not meet this limit, there are many hiking trips with similar experiences to a slot canyon.

Should I Hire a Guide for Visiting a Zion Slot Canyon?

Absolutely! While canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville will be an exciting adventure, you should always prioritize safety. The slot canyons can be challenging to navigate, with unexpected obstacles and changing conditions. Hiring a professional guide ensures you have a safe, educational, and enjoyable experience in the canyons.

Kevin at Falls

Waterfall rappelling is the latest in extreme adventure-oriented activities offered in Hawaii. We now have this option on two islands ... this company here on Kauai and on the island of Maui with Rappel Maui. Rappelling offers a more hands-on experience than a zipline tour, and the waterfalls give you a rush (literally!). Obviously this isn't a tour for everyone, but if you enjoy doing something that takes you out of your comfort zone and gives you a photo op with "Look what I did on vacation in Hawaii" bragging rights, this is a great choice!!!

Da Life Outdoors takes their responsibility for this area seriously. Their guides participate as volunteers in the adjacent Hule'ia Wildlife Refuge, which is closed to the general public. The US Fish & Wildlife purchased 241 acres on Kauai in 1973 for the protection of Hawaii's water birds, and their efforts help the population of native Ae'o (Hawaiian Stilt), Nene (Hawaiian Goose), Koloa Maoli (Hawaiian Duck), and Hawaiian Coot.

The guides also take their role in keeping you safe on this tour seriously! My wife and I had a blast experiencing their tour first-hand recently ... I've done quite a bit of rappelling but this was her first time. She listened intently during the instructions, which is a very good idea. This is not the time to "zone out" like the safety briefing given by a flight attendant on before your plane took off on the way to Hawaii. You do need to pay attention, not only for your own safety, but for your own personal enjoyment of the rest of the tour! The instruction given and demonstrations by were really an excellent introduction to the sport of rappelling and prepared participants well ... both in teaching the important basics as well as encouraging people that "you really can do this ... it isn't hard."

A few minutes later my wife practiced and did well on the dry wall, as did everyone else on tour with us that day. Off we scampered down the trail. It's a short walk down (a little longer coming back up) but when you arrive at the waterfall the first thing that hits you is "Wow, that waterfall looks a LOT more than 60 feet tall!"

The rope was rigged for us to the left side of the main flow of water, and everyone did SO WELL rappelling "Dundee Falls" that we were given the opportunity to try it one more time ... this time with the rope centered in the strongest part of the flowing water! Most of our group (including my wife and several other first-timers) bravely tackled the challenge! Their success was a testament to just how encouraging, informative, and safety-conscious the guides were ... they ABSOLUTELY MADE the tour and were every bit as important to a quality tour experience as the beautiful waterfalls we were enjoying.

I highly recommend this event ... but it isn't for everyone. While I am convinced these guides are absolutely THE BEST at what they do, it is possible to experience cuts and scrapes if you slip. This may be stating the obvious, but ROCKS are HARD ... if you smack yourself on one it is going to hurt. All participants are required to sign a waiver of liability recognizing that there are risks associated with this event. This is an adventure tour ... it is NOT the "It's a Small World" ride at Disneyland. Far from it!

One other aspect I appreciated about this tour ... it has a decidedly local flavor. Some Hawaii vacation activities feel very "corporate" and not very Hawaiian ... but when you pull up to the Jungle Base Camp you are greeted by smiling wild boar heads, goat skulls, and various pelts ... it almost feels like a hunting camp. A few people may be put off by this; if you are one of them don't focus on that or allow it to offend you. It IS a part of local culture and these invasive animals have no place in the wildlife sanctuary dedicated to protection of native species anyway.

Who's this tour for? Teens, healthy non-excessive-fear-of-heights adults, and active, adventurous seniors in good physical condition ... basically anyone who loves ziplining but is maybe looking for something a little more adventurous than that ... and a LOT more hands-on.

Trip Advisor review - Red River Adventures in Moab Utah

Online reviews - 5 Stars

Why Choose RRA? - 20 years of doing it right! Since 2003, when rafting operations began, we have gone on to expand our operations into rock and ice climbing, canyoneering, guided ski touring, travel trips and outdoor education. We have hosted over 85,000 guests and spent over 110,000 days in the field! We are so proud that this has garnered 5-star rankings across all online review sites. Land or water our clients rave about the quality of our guides, the depth of their knowledge, their ability to teach and most importantly, how incredibly fun each is. We believe our past guest's comments make the decision easy! Back to top

Your Safety is our number #1 concern

Since we started this journey in 2003 we have safely hosted 85,000+ kids and adults and spent over 100,000 days rafting, climbing, canyoneering and skiing in Utah and around the world. RRA guides are at a minimum state licensed, insured and hold first aid and CPR certifications. Many of our river guides hold additional certifications in swift water rescue and whitewater instruction. Many, though not all, of our rock, ice, ski and canyoneering guides are AMGA trained or certified for the terrain they guide.. Back to top

Quality Equipment

Do i need a reservation.

YES! To guarantee space on the trip of your choice, we recommend reservations, especially on holidays and summer weekends. In order to provide the type of trip the we have become known for we do limit the number of people on a launch and we do fill up. In addition a lot goes into the planning of a river trip, including scheduling of guides, drivers, packing lunch for full-day and lunch trips and ensuring that our equipment is always in top-notch condition. Make a reservation as soon as you have a good idea of when you want to raft with us and you'll avoid disappointment. Feel free to call us about reservations at any time @ 1-877-259-4046 or email. Back to top

About Age Limitations

Which trip to choose.

We are thrilled to have the ability to offer such a wide variety or trips. We also realize that this can create confusion. We are a fantastic resource and look forward to helping you choose the trip that is perfect for you and your group. Please feel free to call or email with any questions you might have, we love to help. Often after a brief conversation with one of our staff the the answers become clear. Back to top

Where do we park/leave our things

There is plenty of secure parking on site at our offices. Valuables can be locked in your vehicles and will be perfectly safe for the duration of your trip. In addition we are more than happy to store anything that you may be extra concerned about in our offices while you are on the river. Back to top

Are there bugs

Thankfully there are usually very few to no bugs on our trips. The we travel through some of the driest terrain on the planet so there is generally no standing water for bugs to breed in. At the same time the current in the main river section is too swift to allow for breeding. This being said sometimes there are gnats or mosquitoes. Back to top

What to Bring

Red River Adventures tries to make your trip with us as easy as possible! What to bring is clearly outlined on the "what to pack" tab for each of our trips. We provide most, to all, necessary equipment for you to take part in our rock climbing, canyoneering and river trips. You simply bring your own personal clothing and gear. We will provide trip specific lists to assist you in bringing the right things. Back to top

What the Weather is Like

Be prepared for hot (75-110 F degrees) weather during June, July, and August. You can expect cooler temperatures (55-90 F degrees) during April, May, September, and October. August is usually the wettest month (short-lived but intense thunder showers). April 73|42 May 84|50 June 85|58 July 101|64 Aug 98|63 Sept 89|53 Back to top

About Swimming and Fishing

Swimming is as much a part of a great river trip as whitewater and cooking out. Guests are more than welcome to swim on all our river trips. There is no better place to be on a hot summer day than swimming alongside one of our rafts. Catfish and Carp are plentiful in the Colorado and Dolores Rivers. Back to top

What Risks Are Involved

Connor Golter

Had a great time with Red River. We were a group of 2 couples, so we were able to request 2 ducky kayaks and had a blast. The guides were great, good food for a quick lunch, and it was a piece of cake dropping our keys at the office. Great time overall

Ahmed Ali

Lots of fun, great rapids and experience. "Emily is best guide" - Aaron

Lorena Garcia Menendez

Awesome! It was a highlight in our Moab trip. The water was warm, and my kid had a blast. The guides are nice and made this trip especially nice.

Matthew Toone

Awesome experience. My family and I had such a fun time. Our river guide was so nice and informative and made the trip so much fun.

Davis Bailey

The Spi course taught by Derek was awesome, great instruction and a lot was learned

Jeanine Tilson

Great guide. Friendly staff. Very knowledgeable with history on the river. Had a great ride. 👍😊

Brian Howald, JR

I had a wonderful time taking my family of 6 rafting. The guides love what they do and want to make sure everyone has a great time. We would definitely go back and do it again with them.

Erin Johnson

Our family had an unbelievable time on the half-day rafting trip, and our guide Kira was the best!!!

Linh Nguyen

It was very fun. We did the half day rafting trip, if we didnt have other activities planned we would have loved to do the all day trip. Overall, pretty relaxing most of the trip. We went through 4 rapids, nothing crazy but we did get a bit wet. Maggie, our guide was very informative, learned a lot about the area and the sights. And we felt very safe.

Jake Blair

Red Rivers crew knocked it out of the park! We had two girls under the age of 10 and ran into some inclement weather, our guide Liz made sure my girls felt comfortable and safe! Also the bus driver was amazing!

Nicole Beaty

Our family had the pleasure of canyoneering with Molly and Cage this past week on our family vacation. Half of us are afraid of heights, but with the expertise, professionalism, and kindness put forth by this team, not only did we successfully rappel down two (very deep) canyons, we had one of the most fun and memorable experiences of our lifetimes thus far. We can’t thank these two enough for allowing us to see Moab in such a magical way (one I felt brave enough to look down ;).

Nancy Cook

We had a very fun raft trip, with a knowledgeable guide! A small suggestion would be to have a system where the guide could communicate easily with the driver or others, as this was a small issue and could have been a large issue.

Sara Webb

Great morning adventure for the white water rafting. Guide was calm, knowledgeable and good fun, as well as the rest of the team. You feel like you are in safe hands.

Alcinda Lee

Still feeling lucky to have done Canyoneering with a cool group and with Kelcie our guide!

Jim Hamilton

Very considerate and knowledgeable guide service. Highly recommend. Kelcie was awesome.

Tara Starner-Corrow

We booked this tour at the last minute and are so glad we did. Kenzie was awesome - she made us feel safe and comfortable, plus was great to chat with on the hike back to the van. This was such a wonderful experience and I could not recommend it more!

Teri Staats

We had a terrific time floating the river with the guides of Red River Adventures. The team demonstrated and explained safety precautions and how to maneuver in the raft. They served a made on site chicken Caesar salad. Just when started to get hot there would rapids so we could cool off a bit. The staff was exceptional.

Tracy Murfin

Fun and exciting adventure down the river! June was our guide, she was funny, personable and informative about the area around us

Beth MacLeod

I booked a 1-day guided climbing tour with Red River Adventures and I had an amazing time! My guide, Jon, was super knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He asked about my goals for the day were and helped me choose areas and climbs that worked for me. The owner, Carl, was helpful in making it work for me even though I didn't have a car. I definitely recommend Red River Adventures for climbing in UT.

Bill Telepan

Fun bunch of guides. we did the half day and was a perfect way to start day. Sharbo (sp?) was great!

Rianna Mariman

Crack Camp with Red River Adventures was truly such an amazing, unforgettable experience! Mary and her fellow guides were all so knowledgeable, supportive, and kind, and I learned so much in three days! Definitely plan to stay in touch with all the awesome people I met!

Adora Diaz

CRACK CAMP with Mary, Sam and Ben. Fantastic time. Learned a lot. 10 out of 10

michael sweet

Really fun. Great experience. Kenzie was a great guide

Leif Ross

Red River Adventures really went above and beyond with our excursion. Between the thoroughness of explaining the trip and safety protocols, the healthy lunch provided and the tour guide (June) we had an exceptional time and will for sure recommend to anyone we meet that is heading to Moab. Thank you for since an enjoyable trip :)

lauren del francia

First timers, outdoor, multi-pitch full day climbing experience- Brian, our SLC guide, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and patient. His expertise allowed us to know exactly what he was doing while he guided us up routes that were appropriate for our skill level. The day few by and we enjoyed it so much that we plan on making a return guided trip with Brian.

Dean Frank

Great experience. Guides were very energetic and positive and made me feel safe!

Mountain Goat

Kenzie was our guide and was fabulous. She talked down someone starting to panic perfectly and they were smiling to do the next rappel. She made the trip very enjoyable talking with all 4 parties and balancing her time with everyone, which i found impressive. She was very knowledgeable and made everyone feel safe. It was a great canyoneering route with small and big challenges. A great day for everyone. Would definitely use this guide service again.

Anika Erickson

Brought a group of elementary kids for a canyoneering trip. The guides were amazing and sensitive to what each student needed. We felt safe and in good hands the whole time. Would recommend.

Danita Eberhardt

Was a great experience! Kelsey was an awesome guide! Would highly recommend!

Austin Gust

Best money I’ve ever spent! Couldn’t recommend crack camp enough. Mary, Sam and Britney were the best instructors I’ve ever had. The photographers were equally amazing as well. So much valuable knowledge passed down that I’m incredibly grateful for. I got everything I wanted and much more out of this crack camp. Will be returning for sure.

Serena Stephens

Did a raft trip and the bow and arrow canyoneering trip. The two guides were very safe and knowledgeable. We truly enjoyed both and would recommend the company to anyone.

Jeff Hemenway

Molly and Charbo are extremely nice and informative. We had a great time today. The rapids aren’t that challenging but the scenery is amazing!!

Elizabeth Sorenson

We did the the Bow and Arrow excursion with Red River. Our guide was awesome, lots of fun, and knew his stuff. It was a good little hike, not too intense, and had some fun repels. Would definitely recommend for others looking for some fun in Moab.

Ryan McLean

When booking our trip to Moab, we decided we wanted to do a couple of guided adventures. After researching local guiding companies, Red River was exactly what we were looking for. One day we went rock climbing with Brian at Looking Glass Arch. Brian was an awesome guide and made the experience very enjoyable for us! We just wish it was longer! The next day Charbo took us canyoneering to Morning Glory. The hike in, the rappels, and the hike out were great! Charbo was super knowledgeable and made everyone feel comfortable in the group. The whole process from booking the trips to showing up and being taken out was simple and efficient. I won’t hesitate to use them again the next time we are in Moab! Thanks again!

Hiatt Bean

Oscar Hackworth was our Colorado rafting guide. He was next level! A five star, even “ten stars!” kind of guide. From his witty humor to his breadth of knowledge on historical information, our trip on the river was fun and interesting. Only wish we had more time with him such as like on a two day rafting trip. Would recommend!

Aaron Baker

We did the Rock of Ages Canyoneering tour with 5 teenage boys and ABSOLUTELY loved it. Our tour guide, Brian, connected with the boys and walked them through each repel and helped them get comfortable. This was an epic adventure for our group. Thanks!

Marc Thomas Collier

Incredible experience splitboard touring for my wifes birthday. Very professional. Highly recommend.

Mark Popelka

John, an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide led a backcountry tour for me today. It was a full on mountain adventure with extreme weather. My kind of day in the mountains. John is the epitome of what a guide should be. He is extremely personable, patient, fit, and a master of his profession. A Guide full of experience and knowledge. I learned an incredible amount of information today on mountain travel and avalanche related topics. He took the time to explain and ensure I understood the topics. He also shared tips and techniques that made my experience a 10 out of 10. I plan to hire John in the future. You can’t go wrong asking for John. He’s amazing!

mark gregg

Carl is a consummate professional backcountry ski guide. I always learn a ton and have fun in the process. I'll be back!

Anna Rust

Honestly one of the best classes I’ve take, Jake and Vic are both through educators and great guides. If you’re looking to take a AIARE course these guys are great! I left feeling more prepared to deal with avalanche problems and identifying risks in the backcountry.

Steve Sherwood

I had a great time with John at Red River Adventures doing a ski tour yesterday. We skied around Cardiff Fork in the Wasatch, he’s a tremendous guide, such attention to detail, I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips with him. He and Carl at Red River make a dynamic team. They do rock climbing, skiing, alpine climbing, river guiding, you name it they do it. Keep it up folks!

Susan Sims

Victoria was fun and was able to adapt for what suited our time for the day. Appreciated the rescue sled tips.

George Diver

Jake and Ben were professional, informative and extremely helpful. Would recommend to anyone who feels apprehensive about taking an avalanche safety course.

Mike Martula

Amazing experience with Sam on my first back country experience

Liam Doyle

Jake and Garth were both excellent instructors, and just a blast to hang out with for a weekend. It is super obvious they both care a ton about providing an impactful educational experience - but they also made the entire weekend very fun. Highly recommend.

Lukasz Sewera

Great experience during our rescue course.

Derek Wang

It was a blast. Brain was really skilled and thoughtful.

Candice Bithell

Spent a day ice climbing with Red River. Excellent instruction, fun guide (ask for Brian!), all in all a great time. Will go again for sure! Thanks Red River!

Lawler Kang

Out of random coincidence, Sam had led me up a trail last year and strongly suggested I take this course, which was AWESOME! The experience and passion she and Jake bring to getting humans back safely and stoked is unparalleled. And the resources they walk you through and make available are profound. Can’t recommend Red River and these two strongly enough. If you’re serious about backcountry, this is an absolute must. I also really liked the small class size. Made a big difference. Looking forward to practicing my beacon finding at the resort.

Jonas Clem

Great day with Jake at Provo Canyon. Very skilled guides that go above and beyond. Highly recommend….

Change policy, what kind of shoews should i wear for rappeling.

Special traction felt-soled water shoes, that you can hike, rappel and swim in, will be provided for your tour. You'll do about 100-200 yards of walking from the van to the base area on a gravel or dirt road, which be muddy or dusty. Sneakers and sandals (Flip-flops are not ideal) are ok to wear on your way to and from the activity. However for safety reasons, not during the activities. Also please keep in mind that they will get muddy or covered in red dirt, so wear something inexpensive and washable.

What happens if it rains?

The tour will be still operated since there is rain in the rainforest every day. When very rainy weather causes water levels to rise too high to safely use the waterfalls, we use dry stations a safe distance from the watercourse. The tour operates in a protected valley away from the ocean; unlike most other outdoor tours, it's very rare for us to cancel due to weather.

What should I bring with me for the rappeling?

Bring a towel and a change of clothes to change into after the tour. You can bring a waterproof camera or video recorder with the understanding that the rugged and wet nature of the tour can damage fragile devices. If you lose a device in one of the pools, it's not possible to retrieve it. Snacks and bottled water are provided during the tour.

Are there bathrooms at the site?

Yes, there are two flush toilets on-site at the gear shed, and two private changing rooms. Once at the falls, we ask that you exit the streams and pools and "water the plants" in the surrounding forest. Also, there is one stop along the Hana Highway.

Can I use my own backpack during the Rappeling?

No, but a pack that's intended for rappelling in water will be provided.

What should I do my valuables?

Please keep your valuables to a minimum, as it's possible for your items to become damaged or lost. Small items will usually fit in the waterproof kegs provided. Bring these items in a sealable plastic bag, as it possible for kegs to leak or break. Do not recommend to leave your valuables in your/rental car. You can bring your personal items or valuables with you to the tour van. If possible, leave valuables (just bring the minimum stuff) at your resort/hotel. The activity provider does NOT assume any responsibility for your valuables and/or personal belongings.

Classical musicians have limited options to play professionally, so some turn to the U.S. military.

Those who emerge successfully from the audition process must then endure boot camp.

For several months, musicians train as soldiers without any access to their instruments.

Managing to secure a full-time job with a premier military band can be transformational.

She Landed One of Music’s Great Gigs, but First Came Boot Camp

Premier military bands offer rare stability for classical musicians, who consider them a strong alternative to traditional orchestras. But signing up means shipping out.

By Sarah Diamond

Photographs by Christopher Lee

Sarah Diamond and Christopher Lee followed a military band audition in West Point, N.Y.; several days of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; and a concert in North Salem, N.Y.

The 4,300-seat performance space about an hour north of Carnegie Hall was eerily empty, except for nine judges in uniform sitting behind a thick black curtain.

Ada Brooks, her mouth dry from nerves, lifted the bell of her euphonium, a smaller relative of the tuba, and prepared to play the notes that could determine her future.

“Breathe,” she thought. “The beginnings are the most treacherous part.”

Ms. Brooks had told herself this before. Her fervent pursuit to professionally play the euphonium, which is not used in traditional symphony orchestras, had come with many stressful auditions. This one was her 10th for the institution that calls itself the nation’s largest employer of musicians: the United States military.

Time and time again she had practiced and prepared and tried to remember to breathe. She was turned down repeatedly or offered jobs in regional bands. Now came an opportunity for a premium position, a rarely open seat in the prestigious West Point Band.

Some aspects of the audition — like playing for a jury hidden behind a curtain, to guard against potential bias — would be familiar to most orchestra musicians. Others were unique to the military. Two of the other four candidates said they had to lose weight to qualify, and the finalists were tested for coordination in marching drills.

Scores of regional military bands represent the armed forces at ceremonies, parades and holiday celebrations. About a dozen premier bands, including the U.S. Military Academy’s ensemble in West Point, N.Y., perform at inaugurations and foreign dignitary visits.

A woman with a euphonium resting in her lap and her right hand on her head sits in a chair in front of a brick wall.

Seats in the premier bands are particularly attractive, providing job security and steady pay — the starting salary is about $70,000 — along with health care and other benefits. Those who win them tend to stay for many years, if not their entire careers.

Ms. Brooks had been practicing three hours a day in Denton, Texas, using high-end recording equipment in her living room to identify imperfections in her pitch or tempo.

At the audition, she was confident and precise while playing excerpts from works by Schoenberg, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Shostakovich, as well as from the soundtrack of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” by John Williams.

At one point, a judge asked if she could “be more declamatory.” She repeated a few measures. After she played Boismortier’s Sonata No. 12 with the band’s principal euphonium player, Staff Sgt. Christopher Leslie, one of the judges barked: “I think you can do a better job matching his style and intonation. One more time.”

Boismortier’s Sonata No. 12

In the end, Ms. Brooks was one of two finalists asked to play additional excerpts and to sit for a face-to-face interview with the judges. The final question came from the band’s conductor, Lt. Col. Daniel Toven: Why is your dream to be in a premier military band?

Ms. Brooks paused.

“As you probably know,” she said, “euphoniums don’t have a lot of options.”

There was a burst of laughter.

After careful deliberation, Sergeant Leslie delivered the verdict. She was in.

Well, almost. Ms. Brooks had to complete more than two months of boot camp before she would become an Army musician.

A Music Mission

Ms. Brooks, 27, was introduced to the euphonium by her eighth-grade band teacher in Columbia Falls, Mont. At the time she thought it “was just a less cool tuba,” as she put it, and nobody was concerned about the limited career opportunities.

By 10th grade, she had made the all-state band and was no longer planning to study math, science or physics in college. She was now determined to play the euphonium professionally.

She spent $7,000 on a euphonium and two years at Interlochen, a performing arts high school in Michigan. Ms. Brooks then earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance at the University of North Texas, where she made an eight-year commitment to the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, eager for part-time experience playing music in a military setting.

When Ms. Brooks’s unit was deployed unexpectedly to the border of Texas and Mexico as part of Operation Lone Star , many of the musicians quit. “Our band shrunk to half of its original size,” she said.

During her 10-month deployment, Ms. Brooks worked from midnight to 8 a.m. in the armory issuing weapons. Many of her bandmates provided water to crossing migrants and sat with them until Border Patrol agents arrived. She lived in a hotel, which made it hard to prepare for auditions.

“I was practicing my instrument out in my car,” she said. “It was really miserable.”

Military life can be a shock to musicians, most of whom have no prior experience with the armed forces.

“We have to wear a combat uniform to play the tuba, it’s a little weird,” said Staff Sgt. Alec Mawrence, a tuba player in the West Point Band. “Eventually, your head is shaved and you’re screaming, ‘Yes, drill sergeant.’”

Rifles, Not Instruments

The sun had not yet risen over the Ozark Mountains in south central Missouri, but the trainees in Company B, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment were already marching. It was early January and cold — 1 degree — and tendrils of mist hung over the unit.

“I left my home to join the Army,” the trainees sang in unison.

“I Left My Home to Join the Army”

Ms. Brooks — now Specialist Brooks — had thought the daunting experience would be well worth it, saying earlier that “basic training is no big deal compared to 20 years of a performance job.”

But now, after six weeks at Fort Leonard Wood and with five more to go, Specialist Brooks looked exhausted. She liked morning bugle call and rifle training, especially the precision, which reminded her of practicing her instrument. Less enjoyable was standing for hours in the cold and eating abnormally fast.

“While I’m here, I practice my jodies, my marksmanship,” she said, referring to the call-and-response cadences sung while marching or running. She could not bring along her euphonium, and tried not to think about it. “It feels like a whole different life,” she said. Most of the trainees were unaware she was a musician.

A quiet perfectionist, Specialist Brooks had a hard time with the barrage of reprimands that are the hallmark of basic training. Her coping mechanism was to smile, prompting the drill sergeants to snap, “Brooks, hide your teeth!”

“I wasn’t sure how I would handle getting yelled at,” she said. “But then you realize that they’re not actually angry. They just do that all the time.”

When the company reached the armory to pick up rifles for range training, the shivering trainees stood at attention. “Soldier’s creed!” a drill sergeant shouted.

“I am an American soldier,” Specialist Brooks responded, with her unit. “I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.”

Music and the military have long been intertwined. For centuries, drums have been used to set the pace of marches. Fifes and drums were used to communicate on the battlefield before radios. The country’s first military band — the United States Marine Band , known as “the President’s Own” — was formed by an act of Congress in 1798.

Loras John Schissel, a senior musicologist at the Library of Congress, said that during the Civil War, band members would put down their instruments, take up their weapons and fight — and then resume playing. By the early 20th century, music was considered important for military morale.

“Music,” he said, came only “after food, water and ammunition.”

Direct exposure to combat has become increasingly rare for military musicians, but it is not unheard-of. In 1941, all 21 musicians aboard the battleship Arizona died in the attack on Pearl Harbor while passing ammunition to the ship’s guns. On Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S. Army Band helped with search and rescue at the Pentagon.

Quiet Confidence

The possibility of battle is one reason musicians get the same training as infantry soldiers. So on another freezing morning during basic training, Specialist Brooks and 136 other soldiers prepared to rappel down a 40-foot-high wooden structure known as the Confidence Tower.

During a mostly silent 1.5-mile march to the tower — talking was prohibited — the loudest noises were the crunch of frost beneath boots and the swish of camo fatigues against heavy packs.

Cut off from music in boot camp, Specialist Brooks would hum Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat while running laps. Before she arrived, she transcribed song lyrics, including “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine, into her notebook so that she would have a radio in her head. While packing for a field exercise, she and her roommates sang the show tune “It’s the Hard-Knock Life.”

On the march to the Confidence Tower, a cadence Specialist Brooks had been required to yell many times was stuck in her head.

Sitting in my foxhole sharpening my knife out pops the enemy had to take his life die kill ’em die kill ’em Why won’t you die?

“I like the singing part, but the violence is a little shocking to me,” she said later.

By the time the trainees reached the tower, two had been disqualified for marching too slowly. Several others could not complete the small training wall nearby. Specialist Brooks, a rock climber and caver, was unfazed.

The wind shook the tower, and the wood creaked. As Specialist Brooks reached the top, one drill sergeant sitting near the drop-off called out to another: “You take Esophagus.” It was an affectionate nickname the instructors had given her, a play on “euphonium.”

Specialist Brooks knelt by the edge at the top of the tower. Unconcerned about hiding her teeth, she broke into a grin.

Throughout basic training, she tried not to dwell on what she was missing most from her home near Dallas: Baking her favorite blueberry muffins with chia seeds. Lingering over a cup of coffee. Watching a movie on the couch with her dog and her three cats, Kiwi, Biscuit and Momo.

When it was time for Specialist Brooks to leave Fort Leonard Wood, her boyfriend arrived with her euphonium. She played a solo even before eating her first meal off the base.

‘Tax Dollars at Work’

In April, two months after she finished boot camp, Sergeant Brooks, who was promoted to staff sergeant after graduation, was at a school in North Salem, N.Y., for her first concert as a member of the West Point Band. She had rehearsed with the group twice and was now nervously adjusting the ornate pin on the lapel of her black blazer.

“Does this look straight?” she asked. Glancing at her full concert uniform in a mirror, she said, “It’s exciting and weird to see yourself dressed like this.”

The repertoire for the concert was chosen to trace West Point’s legacy. By the time the band reached “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” the crowd was cheering and singing along.

The conductor, Colonel Toven, wrote in his master’s thesis that music helped the Army accomplish its public affairs mission of engendering trust and confidence among citizens. “These are your tax dollars at work,” he said proudly during a mid-concert speech.

After “The Official West Point March” and a rousing encore of John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” Sergeant Brooks’s first concert with the band was over. She looked elated and relieved.

“The Official West Point March”

As the musicians mingled with enthusiastic audience members, Sergeant Leslie found Sergeant Brooks. “Congratulations,” he said, with a collegial nod that was far from his neutral facade as a judge at her audition eight months earlier. Sergeant Brooks, holding a bouquet of flowers, beamed.

She clutched at her collar and asked a bandmate, “Is anyone else warm in these uniforms?” As her adrenaline began to fade, she said that playing alongside these military musicians felt surreal: “It’ll take a while to get over the impostor syndrome.”

My absent hunger was the first sign something was wrong. Normally, even when I’m physically full, the suggestion of, say, a gooey cookie will open a vacancy in my stomach.

This fateful day, though, I skipped breakfast, then headed to lunch with a co-worker.

“Huh,” I thought. Every bit of bread and cheese and chia on the menu sounded repellent. I ordered a smoothie. It tasted like paste.

“Huh,” I thought, when the smoothie was not agreeing with me. “Huh,” I thought, driving down the highway later with a generalized maelstrom of pain.

“HUH,” I thought, hunched on the couch at home, sweating as the clock ticked ever closer to middle school pickup. “HUHHHHHH,” I thought, driving to the school tensed up like a tiny crab.

Now’s when you may remark, “Why didn’t she ask for help? Why didn’t she stop driving everywhere ?”

These are valid thoughts! I figured I had menstrual cramps, even though I knew the timing was off, and this pain was different. I’d had a similar bout a few months earlier, and my gynecologist chalked it up to rupturing ovarian cysts. I experienced my first cyst rupture when I was 13, pain like a hot bolt of lightning.

For those of you without the benefit (?) of a uterus: Many of us walk around regularly with abdominal and pelvic pain that could take down an ornery bear. We tolerate the discomfort, headaches, bowel issues, bloating and bleeding while being told to smile in the shampoo aisle of CVS, while running corporate meetings and delivering packages and coordinating family lives. We have become adept at relaxing our facial masseters and putting others at ease so they may never know Bruce Willis is rappelling from a proverbial Nakatomi Plaza near our fallopian tubes.

Whatever this was, I’d been training for it my whole life. Not only are women cursed with recurrent physical pain, we are tasked with being likable.

I went home and lay down in the shape of a comma. The pain started to ease, and I thought, silly lady! You’re fine! The next morning, I felt sore but better, with plans to chalk the agony up to the Beautiful Mystery of Womanhood. Healthcare, who needs it?! I started work, yet I remained distracted by pain congregating ominously in one area.

Between each sentence I typed, the sensation nagged. I turned to Dr. Google, who offered the words “lower right quadrant” and “appendix.” I poked my lower right quadrant and began the calculus unique to Americans: weighing the cost-benefit ratio of urgent care versus primary care versus worst of all, the panic button known as the emergency room. I was lucky to have insurance, I reminded myself, and would be foolish not to use it.

My doctor’s office was able to fit me in with a nurse practitioner. She prodded.

“Can you jump up and down?” she said.

“I would rather not,” I replied.

She wrote “STAT” on the CT scan order. I relaxed my masseters as the receptionists argued about who had to call the imaging center. I apologized to everyone, saying, “Whenever you can squeeze me in!”

At home, I checked my electronic portal, thinking there was no way I actually had appendicitis. They’d tell me to avoid cashew butter in smoothies. Or take an Aleve. Or see a therapist for anxiety manifesting in the lower right quadrant.

“Appendicitis,” it read.

Not knowing what to do next, I took the dog out. During the walk, the on-call doctor phoned and said I should head to the emergency room, haha! We caught the appendix at an early enough stage that it had not yet ruptured, turned gangrenous and put my life at risk.

At the hospital, I chatted about favorite bourbons with the friendly surgeon who would soon laparoscopically snake into my belly in three places and cut out the rascally organ while I snoozed under general anesthesia.

“You’re very stoic,” he said, looking into my eyes. “When I saw you across the room, I didn’t believe you had appendicitis.”

After surgery, the nurse said I was her favorite appendicitis patient, which made me feel like I won The Hospital, which made me feel… huh? Like I should probably start examining the need to be liked and chill, even when losing a toxic organ. This work will be ongoing!

I spent a few days watching Anne Hathaway rom-coms. The surgery pain replaced the pain in my lower right quadrant, magically gone, kaput, no small mercy. The moral here is to listen to the language of hurt, respect bodily oddities, fight the urge to rationalize problems away, even if you fancy yourself some kind of smiley, friendlier John Wick.

I checked my online patient portal to read the surgery notes.

“Very pleasant 40-year-old female presents to ER with approximately a day and a half of abdominal discomfort.”

On my face crawled a vacant drugstore smile.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

rappelling tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

rappelling tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

rappelling tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

rappelling tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

rappelling tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

rappelling tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

rappelling tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Kate Middleton and Prince William Seen in New Photo After Surprise B&B Stay Last Year

The local bed and breakfast in Wales shared a never-before-seen image from the royal couple's visit, calling them "so kind and friendly"

A bed and breakfast in Wales reminisced on their visit from Kate Middleton  and  Prince William  one year later — with a never-before-seen photo!

On April 27, Duffryn Mawr Country House shared a pair of new pictures on their Facebook page looking back at the Prince and Princess of Wales' stay during their visit to the area in 2023. One image showed Prince William, now 41, and Princess Kate, now 42, posing with staff members while another showed their signatures in a guest book.

"It's been 1 year since we welcomed William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, to Duffryn Mawr!" the bed and breakfast's team captioned the post. "We were delighted to welcome William and Kate for a night here when they visited The Brecon Beacons. So kind and friendly, it was a pleasure to have them stay here."

The image showed Princess Kate and Prince William wearing the same outfits they wore for their visit to Aberfan on April 28, 2023, hinting that they posed for the picture on the morning of their departure.

The royal couple likely slept well at the spot after a busy day in Wales spent outdoors (despite some rainy weather!) with the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team. Princess Kate and Prince William took part in training activities including rappelling, medical support exercises and a search dog rescue demonstration.

Matthew Horwood - WPA Pool/Getty

Afterward, they visited Dowlais Rugby Club to meet members of the local community and chat over pizza from the Little Dragon Pizza Van. The couple ordered pepperoni, margherita, barbecue chicken and goats' cheese pizzas, which they then took to share with rescue teams in Dowlais.

Peter Morris, owner of the Little Dragon Pizza Van, who served the couple with colleague Shannon Stokes, told PEOPLE, "The Princess asked if we make our own dough and said that they love making pizzas with their children," referring to  Prince George , 10,  Princess Charlotte , 9, and  Prince Louis , 6.

"Making pizza for the future king and queen is surreal," he added.

Princess Kate and Prince William's three children are currently on a school break until June 3. The couple traditionally take time away from their royal duties during school vacations to spend time with their children, but this year, Kate is already staying out of the public eye amid her cancer treatment and William has  postponed most outings  until the  U.K.'s general election  takes place on July 4.

On May 25, George  joined his father at the FA Cup final  between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium in London.
