"Jan was very informative and a great guide on our visit. The little snacks and cold weather gear really showed she wants everyone to enjoy their night and be comfortable. Super knowledgeable and impressively efficient in finding stars, planets, and constellations. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Maui!"

"For sure a highlight of our trip. Informative and fun! We had an excellent night and our guide made it so special. Every detail is attended to. Text before going with all the guidelines. Checking if you need to sit further up front do to motion sickness like me. Weather gear, hot drinks and snacks provided as well as plenty of stops for bathroom and photo ops. Amazing experience"

"Me and my husband didn’t know what to expect from the tour but Jan surpassed any expectations we could have had. She was very knowledgeable and was able to take us to spots that were quiet and perfect to get a good view of the sunset and cosmos."

"We appreciated that Jan, the owner, spent extra time on the stars. We were so impressed by the stars and her knowledge of them. We couldn’t believe how fast she could find them without GPS coordinates. This experience was definitely the highlight of our trip. Thanks for making it so memorable!"

Overall rating

This wonderful tour was a highlight of my trip to Maui! I had so much fun!! The views and sunset were amazing. I really loved the stargazing with our guide, Yoshi. He was kind, informative, funny & friendly and made sure ... we had everything we needed to be comfortable. I plan to do this tour again next time I come to Maui!

We've been on many excursions during our travels, but this one was by far the most memorable and breathtaking. Yoshi, our guide, was incredibly friendly and professional—one of the best we've ever had. We appreciated the ... seamless pick-up and drop-off service, and Yoshi made the long ride enjoyable with his great conversation. He's also perfectly bilingual in English and Japanese, which was a huge plus. The view from the Haleakalā summit and the experience of watching the sunset were beyond words. We loved every moment of it and wouldn't hesitate to do it again!

Once in a lifetime experience

What an experience. 10,000 feet up above the clouds and then to watch a mesmerising sunset followed by Stargazing and seeing the moon up close all with a fantastic guide. It all felt so surreal and would reccommend to a ... nyone as a bucket list thing to experience with memories to last a lifetime.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

Don't want to get up at 2am for a Haleakala Sunrise? Good news! You can still get an equally dazzling display of light and color on the Sunset Tour. Watching the sunset atop Haleakala is obviously the highlight of this tour, but it is also a chance to get a little glimpse of Upcountry Maui when you stop at the Kula Lodge Marketplace. The gift shop here is great for finding unique treasures to take home, and the views of the island from Kula are gorgeous. Maui has many beautiful landscapes, and a Haleakala tour really showcases this diversity. Going from sea level to green and lush ranch land, and then a volcanic crater ... you see this incredible transition as you progress through the tour.

Once within Haleakala National Park, you have the chance to take in views from the Ranger Station at about 7,000ft and then at the Haleakala Visitors Center at about 9,800ft for the actual sunset. This being the highest point on the island, you can really see it all! When the horizon is clear you can see the Big Island summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and the islands of Kaho'olawe, Molokini, Lanai, and Molokai. It's not just the views that make Haleakala special, the crater itself and the volcanic terrain make you feel as though you are walking on the moon. Haleakala is home to the endemic Silversword so keep an eye out for that along with the Hawaii state bird - the Nene, or Hawaiian goose.

Haleakala Tours gain quite a bit of elevation in a relatively short period of time. This makes for some windy roads, particularly during the last 30-45 minutes of the drive up to the summit. If you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to take whatever remedy works for you – Dramamine, Bonine, Ginger, etc. This tour is not recommended for those that get extreme motion sickness that no remedy can cure. It is also not recommended for pregnant women.

Upcountry Farms

At this overlook, you’ll see the crater floor from a completely different perspective. It’s definitely worth a stop!

Most visitors pass up Leleiwi overlook unknowingly. But it’s actually one of the best overlooks on Haleakala! The panoramic view of the crater is absolutely spectacular, and is from a completely different vantage point from the ones you’ve seen so far.

At the lookout, you will notice that the mountains are greener than at the summit. This is because moisture in the clouds brought in by the winds are trapped inside  the volcanic basin. If you just stand there for a few minutes, you can actually watch the clouds form. It’s a very unique and awesome experience, to witness weather happening right before your eyes!

To get to this overlook, you will need to follow a short path that starts on the opposite side of the parking lot ahead. It’s a short, half mile walk. On the way back, you will see a wall of stacked stones. This is the  remains of a ranch wall made in the late 1800s. At one time, it stretched for about 2 miles, and was intended to guide cattle to more fertile pasturelands on east maui.

About a minute past the visitor center at the end of the road, you’ll find an overlook called Pu‘u‘ula‘ula or Red Hill. This is the actual summit of Mount Haleakala, at 10,023 feet above sea level. From here, you can watch as the sun sets for the night into the arid, mars-like landscape of Haleakala.

As you make your way back from the summit, you can return to the visitor center parking lot to hike Sliding Sands Trail. It is a rigorous 11-mile hike, but we recommend you just hike to the first switchback or until you get tired.

You don’t need to travel far to see the expansive view of the massive crater open up before you! When you are ready to return, just retrace your steps back the same way you came. If you plan on doing the whole hike, or a large portion of it, remember to bring water. The area isn’t shaded, and you’ll be walking for a long time.

Note: we recommend you do this hike during the day.

Hosmer Grove is located just outside the national park entrance, at an elevation of 6,800 feet. Here, you will see trees from all around the world, including Juniper and Fir from North America, Cedar and Seigi Pine from Japan, and Eucalyptus trees from Australia. This is a short, relaxing, half-mile loop trail. It’s a great spot to stop and breathe in the fresh air from all the foliage around you. It’s also a completely different landscape from the ones you’ll see later in the tour.

This mini hike starts at the visitor center and takes you to an overlook with a great view of the crater. The walk is just .5 miles, and it’s well worth it. If you’re thinking to yourself, “another overlook?” Yes, but we promise - this one has great views!

This 8-mile trek is actually rated hard, but we suggest you just hike the first mile, then turn around the way you came. You’ll still get a great view of a crater rim in the condensed version - and you'll have more time for the rest of the activities on this tour!

Make a quick stop here for some snacks and water. There is no food once you’re in the park.

As we make our way to the bottom of the mountain there is a lookout that offers one final glimpse of Maui. Feel free to pull over for a quick view or to snap a photo.

As we near the base of Haleakala, we will approach Upcountry Maui. In Upcountry Maui, there are a couple interesting farms in the area. Here you can find the Ali’i Lavender Farm, a great place to unwind and enjoy the fragrance of lavender. For plant lovers, there’s Kula Botanical Garden. And, for cheese enthusiasts, check out Surfing Goat Dairy. This spot has a petting zoo and sells gourmet goat cheese and specialty items like chocolate goat cheese truffles. Finally, you can check Maui Winery - which is famous for its pineapple wine.

Kevin at Falls

Is 2am a little early for you to get up to watch a Haleakala Sunrise? We have great news for you! Sunsets at Haleakala are equally beautiful to sunrises, and a whole lot less crowded! Maui has a variety of beautiful landscapes, and a Haleakala tour really showcases this diversity. Going from sea level to green and lush pasture land, and then a volcanic crater … you see this incredible transition as you move up the mountain during this tour.

One other nice thing about this tour ... it doesn't sell out as ridiculously far in advance as the sunrise tours, and the summit area is a LOT less crowded this time of day. It's funny ... here on Maui EVERYONE wants to do a sunrise on Haleakala. On the Big Island it is just the opposite. The really popular tour there on Mauna Kea is a SUNSET tour and it's hard to get people to show up for sunrise tours. What's the difference exactly? Well, it's all because of word-of-mouth and historical tradition. For some reason on Maui "sunrise is the thing to do" and on the Big Island "sunset is the thing to do." In reality sunrises and sunsets look a lot alike on both islands and on both mountains.

Once inside Haleakala National Park you will visit the Ranger's Station at 7,000ft and then the Haleakala Visitors Center at about 9,800ft for the actual sunset. This being the highest point on the island, you can really see it all! On a clear day you can see the Big Island summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and the islands of Kaho'olawe, Molokini, Lanai, and Molokai. It's not just the views that make Haleakala special, the crater itself and the volcanic terrain make you feel as though you are walking on the moon. Haleakala is home to the endemic Silversword so keep an eye out for that along with the Hawaii state bird – the Nene, or Hawaiian goose.

Haleakala Tours gain quite a bit of elevation in a relatively short period of time … almost 10,000 feet in the space of about 45 minutes. Just before the park entrance there is a series of dramatic switchbacks in the road, so if you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to take whatever remedy works for you – Dramamine, Bonine, Ginger, etc. This tour is not recommended for those that get extreme motion sickness that no remedy can cure. It is also not recommended for pregnant women.

Wear comfortable clothing on this tour along with good walking shoes. It is also a good idea to bring drinking water. Staying well hydrated really helps when you are going to altitude.

Haleakala Crater Summit

Rising above the island of Maui at 10,023 feet above sea level and making up 75% of its land mass is the East Maui Volcano, also known as Haleakala (“house of the sun” in Hawaiian). This massive volcano is the third-largest in Hawaii and boasts a crater that is 7 miles across, 2 miles wide, and 2,600 feet deep. The 30,000-acre Haleakala National Park near Upcountry Maui, all the way to the southeastern coast, offers numerous hikes and activities with rocky desert landscapes near the frontside Summit District and lush rainforests and waterfalls near the backside Kīpahulu District. There are even places to camp for more adventurous travelers!

Haleakala Summit is the best place on the island to watch an absolutely unforgettable sunrise in the morning or sunset in the evening with an amazing array of colors. During the day, Haleakala Summit offers outstanding views of both the land and ocean in all directions, with incredible views of the universe while stargazing at night. Without any competition from city lights, the number of stars you can see is nothing short of impressive.

Both the frontside summit and backside near the coast can be visited on your own. However, a  reservation and permit are required  to visit the summit at sunrise if you are driving yourself. Sunrise is between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, meaning you’ll have to depart around 3 or 4 AM as the drive via Haleakala Highway is typically 1.5-2.5 hours, depending on where you’re coming from.

One of the best ways to experience Haleakala is through a tour with a knowledgeable guide. Tour options range from sunset/sunrise viewing, hikes, and our favorite, being shuttled to the top and biking back down to the bottom! Whatever you decide to do, keep the elevation in mind, as it can be much colder with strong winds at the top, so be sure to bring extra layers. Additionally, walking trails can be challenging given how thin the air is at that elevation, so take your time and, above all else, have fun!

Driving to the top of Haleakala Summit on your own is possible via the 10-mile Haleakala Highway if you have a car and want to drive. However, it’s a road with a lot of twists and turns that make for a slow drive and typically takes between 1.5 – 2.5 hours. Additionally,  an entranc e fee is required for all visitors to the park. A tour is a great option if you’d prefer to sit back and relax on the way up. Not only do you not have to drive, but most tours are led by a knowledgeable guide that will share with you facts about Hawaiian history, culture, and folklore.

As mentioned, the air can be much cooler at the top, as much as 50 °F (-1 °C) cooler than the base with strong winds (it has snowed at the top before). We recommend bundling up or bringing extra layers even when the sky is clear. Additionally, don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Even though it’s cooler at the top, the sun’s rays are still strong enough to give you a burn!

In addition to the cool air, the air is also much thinner, 10,023 feet up at the top of Haleakala. This elevation can make walking trails a challenge for those with breathing problems. So take your time, walk slowly, and stop for breaks often. If you end up with a headache, that could be a sign of altitude sickness that should clear up when you’re back at sea level.

Did you know that you can also camp in Haleakala National Park? Camping is only allowed in designated areas, including the Hosmer Grove Campground in the frontside district and the Kīpahulu Campground in the backside district. For serious adventures, three historic cabins within the crater are only accessible by trail, meaning you have to hike all of your gear in and out. Visit the  National Park Service  website for more information on camping in Haleakala National Park.

Technically, Haleakala is still considered active! However, it is a dormant volcano, and radiocarbon dating puts its last eruption close to 500 years ago. By comparison, Mauna Loa on the Big Island has erupted more than a dozen times in the last century. The USGS currently has the Volcano Alert Level for Haleakala at “normal,” meaning it’s in a non-eruptive phase.

The name Haleakala comes from early Hawaiians and means “house of the sun.” They believed that the crater at the summit was home to the grandmother of the demigod Maui. According to Hawaiian folklore, Maui lassoed the sun to slow its journey across the sky to make the day longer.
