Eurail To Travel Agents: Try It, You’ll Like It

Before travel agents sell rail travel, Clarissa Mattos, Eurail marketing manager for the Americas & Pacific, recommends they do a test drive themselves. “Europe has more of a rail culture so people are more fluent with the ease of traveling by rail. So I always recommend travel agents give it a try, too," she said.

To do so, agents should contact Eurail’s U.S.-based general sales agent, Rail Europe (RE) to qualify for a 75% discount on passes they can use on the Continent. Half of RE’s sales originate with travel agents.

To entice more travel agents to the Eurail fold, New York-based RE regularly offers a variety of other incentives, too, including gift cards and monetary rewards. Agents can also opt to add service fees on their own terms to the cost of any ticket (100% payable to the agency).

RE’s sales team also offers in-agency presentations and webinars throughout the year. Visit  RE’s agent portal for both pre-recorded and bi-weekly live training courses, called Europe on TRAC (travel rail agent course), where agents can become certified as a Europe Rail Expert, a France Rail Expert or a Swiss Rail Expert.

Travel surveys show that more than 35% of Eurail Pass travelers wish to discover as much of Europe as possible and choose the Select Pass, covering travel to three to five bordering countries, while 20% favor the classic Eurail Global Pass. A whopping 45% select the One Country Pass and Regional Pass, reflecting the market trend of travelers favoring shorter trips to fewer destinations.

“Today’s travelers are looking for authentic experiences, and rail answers that call by connecting people, places and cultures. Traveling by rail is not just a mode of transportation, it is a part of an overall European experience, especially high-speed rail, is something that does not exist in North America,” said RE spokesperson Melanie Albaric.

Eurail only just received the February sales figures, so it is too soon to provide an analysis of how sales are going this year, but January sales showed a slight uptick.

Once associated with students and backpackers, rail has stepped up its image, its service and its rates in some quarters. Says Albaric, “Between the yield-managed pricing and the various promotions we offer year round, we actually offer very competitive prices when it comes to rail travel.” She suggests also checking RE’s deals page .

Eurail Passes allow travelers to explore Europe at their own pace, hopping on and off trains as they go. Making new plans in advance or along the way is also easy with the Eurail Rail Planner App.

The newly launched free Rail Planner App e-reservation function lets customers book, pay and receive seat reservation through their smartphone. Due to extensive demand, the Italian high-speed Le Frecce trains and cross-border routes within Italy can require a seat reservation.

Earlier this year, Eurail added Eurostar, the high-speed passenger rail service linking the U.K. with mainland Europe, to its membership group for seamless and convenient city-center to city-center service that vies with air travel. Additionally, Eurostar provides a few amenities, such as a baggage allowance with no weight restrictions, free Wi-Fi and more than 300 hours of onboard entertainment on the new e320 trains.

Eurail Global and applicable Select and One Country Pass holders can secure Eurostar Pass holder fares from €30 (US$32) one way in Standard class or €38 (US$40) in Standard Premier with their Eurail Pass, making it easier to incorporate a high-speed journey under the Channel into their rail journey.

Budget-friendly options include the permanent extension of the Youth fare age cap from 25 to 27 years, offering up to 35% off the standard first class adult fare, as well as the children travel for free program, the Extra Days Promotion offers a savings of up to 25%. In an inclusive move to appeal to Millennials, the Youth Pass has edged up from 26 to 28 years old. Additionally many of the rail carriers offer “early bird” fares.

As part of Eurail's partnership with Disneyland Paris, Eurail Pass holders receive a €20 discount on pre-booked Disneyland Paris ticket.  that includes 1-Day Tickets to Disneyland Park or Walt Disney Studios Park, or the 1-Day 2-Parks ticket.

The rail systems that crisscross the European Continent was called the Unifier of Europe after World War II. By 1959, the Eurailpass was invented and appealed to America’s first generation of backpackers creating a mystique among Baby Boomers, many of whom continue to travel by rail.

Improvements to the high-speed rail network are mirrored this year in local train fleets, especially in France (TVG Oceane), and on the popular scenic rail lines in Switzerland.

In Switzerland, the new Gotthard Panorama Express (Lugano – Lucerne) that took 17 years to complete, takes travelers from southern city Lugano through the heart of the country – and the Gotthard tunnel – north through the Alps to Flüelen, where the journey continues northwest on steamboat across Lake Lucerne to the city of Lucerne. On this route, the Swiss Federal Railways connects the cosmopolitan cities of Zurich, Switzerland and Milan, Italy in 3.5 hours.

France will also be seeing additional routes this year in northwest Brittany, reducing the time between Paris and Rennes to one hour and 25 minutes; The Tours-Bordeaux route is scheduled for completion in mid-2017 will reduce the trip between Paris and Bordeaux from three to two hours.

The two “magical cities” of Berlin and Munich will be linked, shortening the journey from north to south of Germany to under four hours, compared to the more than six it has taken up to now.

A new northern Spain Hi-speed rail line will soon open making it possible to travel from Madrid to Asturias, where clients can explore the cities of Oviedo, Gijón and their surroundings.

Owned by more than 35 railway and shipping companies the Eurail Group has partnerships with hotels, transport companies, ferries and attractions to benefit Eurail Pass holders. Visit the Eurail website . Rail Europe works with all the major players in the industry as well.

Agents can book for their clients via the agent website or connect with travel experts at RE’s customer care center by phone, or live chat on the website.

Another benefit of train travel is that it allows clients to travel at their own pace. Unlike air travel, which can be stressful and time-consuming, train travel provides a more relaxed and comfortable experience. With the ability to stretch out and enjoy the scenery, clients can arrive at their destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.

One of the highlights of travelling through Switzerland by train is the opportunity to experience the country’s panoramic trains. These trains are designed to showcase Switzerland’s stunning natural beauty, with panoramic windows and open-air observation decks. Clients can choose from a variety of routes, including the Glacier Express, which travels through the heart of the Swiss Alps, or the Golden Pass Line, which takes travellers from Montreux on Lake Geneva to Lucerne, passing through rolling hills and picturesque villages.

Meanwhile, Rail Europe’s Eurail Global Pass also provides access to high-speed train networks throughout Europe, allowing clients to explore multiple countries in one trip. With the Global Pass, clients can travel to up to 33 different countries, including France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, with the convenience of a single pass. You can take as many trains as you like and there is no limit on the distance you can travel within a travel day. All of this at a fixed price. This makes it easy for travel agents to plan multi-country itineraries for their clients, saving them time and hassle.

For travel agents, working with Rail Europe is a no-brainer. Rail Europe’s Easy Rail Access program is a valuable resource for travel agents looking to book train travel for their clients. And with the ability to earn commission on bookings, it’s a great way to supplement their income while providing a valuable service to their clients.

Rail Europe empowering travel agents with seamless rail bookings

Srijit Nair, General Manager - India, Middle East and Africa, Rail Europe

Headquartered in Paris, Rail Europe provides an easy platform for travellers to book train tickets for popular routes across Europe, including high-speed trains, scenic routes, intercity connections, and access to a wide range of destinations. Srijit Nair, General Manager – India, Middle East and Africa, Rail Europe, is dedicated to shaping the company’s future in the global travel industry by focusing on expanding strategic partnerships and prioritising seamless, eco-friendly, and customer-centric rail travel experiences.

– Prashant Nayak

Rail Europe offers travellers a diverse range of experiences that combine the convenience of train travel with the opportunity to explore Europe’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and iconic landmarks. Whether it is a solo adventure, romantic getaway, family vacation, or group tour, Rail Europe caters to the needs and preferences of travellers seeking unforgettable moments and rewarding experiences

Forward-Thinking Approach

Rail Europe continuously evaluates traveller preferences and market trends to expand its product offerings. The company stays attuned to the changing needs and preferences of travellers, ensuring that its services remain relevant and competitive in the dynamic travel market. Other than leisure travellers, to ensure that business travellers experience seamless and productive journeys, Srijit says, “Rail Europe understands that business travellers need connectivity, and hence we are always looking to offer an expanded network of train journeys. We are always thinking ahead; our product team is more attuned than ever to emerging trends, ensuring people’s desire is not just a part of our planning but a driving force behind it.”

© ÖBB Harald Eisenberger

Recently, Rail Europe opened ÖBB’s international routes towards Hungary for all B2B partners, connecting Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. This move is a direct response to the feedback from customers who have expressed a growing demand for more cross-border train travel options. “We envision seamless travel through various countries, allowing passengers to enjoy unique cultures, food, and picturesque sights, all while relaxing on a train,” says Srijit.

Sustainable Corporate Travel

Rail Europe is committed to leading sustainable initiatives that champion train travel as an eco-friendly transportation choice. The company also recognises the shifting preferences of business travellers in favour of sustainable options and has positioned itself as the prime choice for eco-friendly travel in Europe.

Actively engaging with travel agents, Rail Europe advocates for the integration of train travel packages into corporate policies, emphasising the environmental benefits of choosing trains over other modes. By fostering partnerships with businesses, promoting awareness, and aligning with Europe’s ambitious sustainability goals, Rail Europe aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with corporate travel, contributing to a more sustainable and responsible travel landscape.

Simplifying Travel Choices

The introduction of seat reservation sales for Eurail and Interrail pass holders is a strategic move that aligns with the demand for passholder fares. As a platform facilitating the purchase of Eurail passes, the company has recognised the need to enhance its services for trade partners. On the Rail Europe booking platform, customers can now swiftly assess whether an additional seat reservation is required for their travel itinerary, especially on trains like TGV, Lyria, Eurostar, Frecciarossa, etc. Srijit adds, “This feature not only streamlines the booking process but also provides transparency on associated costs, contributing to a more seamless and informed customer experience. The introduction of this new offer underscores Rail Europe’s commitment to continually improving its business strategy and ensuring the best possible travel experience for its trade partners.”

Bridging Knowledge Gaps

In the B2B travel market, one of the key challenges that Rail Europe encounters is the need to educate an expanding base of travel agents about train travel in Europe. On this, Srijit mentions, “To address this, Rail Europe has implemented a proactive strategy involving regular training sessions and monthly webinars. By encouraging travel agents to enhance their knowledge about train travel in Europe, we aim to empower them to better assist their clients in planning seamless and enjoyable rail journeys.”

Cutting-Edge Tech Solutions

Technology is at the forefront of enhancing Rail Europe’s B2B client experience, and they recently announced their revamped tech solutions range at the WTM (World Travel Market) in London. Designed to offer businesses greater flexibility and scalability, Rail Europe introduced a blend of old favourites and an innovative newcomer tailored to meet the evolving demands of the travel industry. “Our exciting newcomer, RailFlash, is a sleek API-like solution, ideal for businesses aiming for swift, lightweight connectivity without the need for comprehensive integration. This new solution is designed with simplicity, efficiency, and speed in mind, ensuring partners can get up and running in no time. Then we also have RailLink, the simplest connectivity solution, perfect for businesses looking to establish an affiliation with Rail Europe and earn commissions without the complexities of deeper integration,” informs Srijit.

As a comprehensive platform for European train travel, Rail Europe serves as a one-stop shop for travel agents. Through its user-friendly interface, travel agents can seamlessly book trains and passes for their clients, earning commissions on rail revenue in the process. This streamlined approach allows travel agents to efficiently plan and book train travel for their customers while also benefiting from the convenience and reliability of Rail Europe’s services.

Train system in Europe

Europe train map, booking train travel in europe, 3 ways to make your european train fare cheaper, smart money move: earn points on train travel, train travel in europe recapped.

If you’ve been dreaming about visiting Europe this summer and eating gelato in Italy or visiting the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia in Spain, good news: Airfare is down 8% compared to this time last year, according to Hopper’s 2024 Summer Travel Outlook.

And once you’re in Europe, you may be able to save money if you travel by train. Traveling by train in Europe is convenient and sustainable. Plus, some trains, like the Glacier Express in Switzerland, are designed to travel through scenic destinations so you can sightsee while you relax.

If you’re considering incorporating train travel into your European itinerary , here’s what you need to know about getting around and how to save money on tickets.

There are several train companies in Europe. Some only offer regional train service, while others offer trains between countries. As you plan your trip, familiarize yourself with the train companies that serve your intended destination so you can determine if traveling by train makes sense for you.

Here are some train companies that serve different countries in Europe:

Eurostar trains travel between the U.K., France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. (Although the U.K. is not in Europe, it's a popular destination on its own and often coupled with a European itinerary.)

NS is the leading train company in the Netherlands.

Renfe is the national train company in Spain.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) offers long-distance and regional trains in Germany.

SNCF Connect offers high-speed train travel in France.

Trenitalia is the state-run train company in Italy.

Glacier Express offers scenic trains within Switzerland.

Some of these train companies have partnerships with each other to offer convenient connection options. For example, DB-SNCF is a joint venture between DB and SNCF that links travel between Germany and France.

If you Google search “Europe train map,” you’ll find many different maps based on regions, countries, or travel throughout the continent. Here’s a European train map offered by Trainline, which shows different destinations accessible by train.

rail europe travel agent rates

The interactive map on Trainline’s website highlights popular routes across the country. If the country you’re looking for isn’t featured or you want to see regional trains instead, make your search more specific to check availability.

Buying train tickets in Europe is fairly straightforward. You can purchase your tickets through:

An online travel agency (OTA): Several OTAs that sell train tickets in Europe include Trainline, Rail Europe, Eurail and Omio.

The train company: If you know which train company serves your destinations, consider booking directly on the train company's website in case you need make any changes, since booking travel through an OTA adds an extra layer of complexity .

At the train station: If you don’t know (or plan) your schedule in advance, you can purchase a ticket at the train station. Keep in mind purchasing at the train station is running a risk that the train time you want might be sold out, or more expensive, since it’s a last-minute purchase.

Depending on when and where you buy your tickets, there are a few ways to save money on train travel within Europe.

1. Comparison shop

If the train company and an OTA offer tickets, compare prices to see where those seats are cheaper. We searched for a train from Paris to Amsterdam in August 2024 on the Eurostar site and on Trainline to see which option is cheaper.

Booking directly with Eurostar (price in U.S. dollars and euros)

rail europe travel agent rates

Booking a Eurostar train on Trainline (price in U.S. dollars and euros)

rail europe travel agent rates

If you pay in euros, tickets on Eurostar and Trainline are the same price (60 euros). But if you pay in U.S. dollars, the fare is slightly cheaper on Trainline ($68.30 versus $70). If you don’t have a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees, you’d want to book the ticket from Trainline in U.S. dollars.

Generally though, if you’re going to Europe — or really anywhere outside of the U.S. — consider using a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees , because these pesky fees are usually between 1% to 3% and can quickly add up.

2. Take advantage of discounts

There are often discounts available for students, seniors and families.

For example:

Spanish train operator Renfe, offers up to a 30% discount on tickets for those ages 14 to 25.

Eurail offers a family discount, a 10% senior discount and up to 25% off for travelers age 27 or below.

Eurostar offers discounted rates for those under age 26 and 60 and up.

Other discounts or sales may be available, so be sure to shop around. Booking early can also score you a deal. For comparison purposes, we searched for a ticket from Rome to Milan on Trenitalia one week and three months out. Most of the available tickets a week out were priced at $108, while the tickets three months in advance hovered around $48.

3. Consider travel insurance

According to NerdWallet’s annual summer travel survey , an impressive 84% of Americans plan on vacationing in 2024, with 45% of Americans going on a summer trip (June-August). Summer travelers plan to spend $3,594, on average, for their flights and hotel stays.

When considering an expensive vacation, travel insurance can be a good option, particularly if your trip plans are nonrefundable and you want overseas medical coverage. Even if you have a credit card that offers complimentary travel insurance , most U.S.-based medical plans don’t protect you for medical care abroad.

In addition to travel medical coverage, a comprehensive travel insurance plan includes benefits such as trip cancellation , trip interruption , baggage delay and lost luggage coverage . If you don’t need travel medical insurance, and the coverage provided by your travel credit card is sufficient, you may not need to purchase a standalone travel insurance policy.

If you have a credit card that earns extra points for travel, using it to buy train tickets makes sense since trains are part of the travel category. Here are some popular cards that earn additional rewards for travel and don’t charge foreign transaction fees.

The Railbookers Difference: A ‘Travel Agent for the Travel Agent’

KarryOn July 26, 2023

Despite its name, Railbookers is not a rail ticketer, far from it, says Railbookers Group President and chief executive Frank Marini.

rail europe travel agent rates

“So you’ve got rail ticketers; you’ve got FIT companies that may sell a little bit of rail; and then you’ve got escorted operators. There really is no one like us that has rail, accommodation, sightseeing, car rental, ferries,” the Railbookers boss said over an intimate lunch in Sydney on Monday.

“We go anywhere the train goes, any date the customers want to go … so there’s really nobody like us.”

As the “predominant FIT rail operator worldwide”, Marini sees many clear distinctions between what his company does and what other operators in the rail and touring space do.

“One of the things that makes us really, really different is how we create products. So today we have almost 5,000 itineraries, but every itinerary is customisable. Every single itinerary started from something that was tailor-made,” he said.

Giving clients what they want

Railbookers Swiss

“So we never create anything on our own – our travel advisors and customers do. And what we do is look at what was patterned every week.”

“We don’t have random space on a cruise ship or we’re not trying to get to a certain amount of people on an escorted tour. We don’t hold any space.

“So we never promote anything that’s actually not selling, because we don’t have space to fill.”

Marini puts it best when he says Railbookers is “just a piece of a travel advisor’s customer’s trip”.

“So as an example, they could be doing a river cruise … we’re doing the post-river cruise where they’re finishing in Barcelona and going on to St Moritz. They may want to go down to Lake Como and then go down to Florence and Rome. We do that other piece, we don’t do river cruising,” he explained.

“So we fit in a lot of different pieces and although we’re a tour operator, I like to say we’re the travel agent for the travel agent because most travel advisors don’t know rail. We speak rail, no problem.”

Aussie market back on track

And it apparently talks rail to a lot of customers down under, where its main demographic is the “50-plus market”.

“So our Australian market is our second biggest market outside the US. So, it really has come back strong [post-pandemic],” he told  Karryon .

On Aussie booking trends, he said Railbookers was seeing “both short-term windows, as well as long-term”.

“We’ll have customers that will call us today, book today, leave today. We’ll have customers that … book today for two years out,” he explained.

“So (last week) we saw 47 per cent of our bookings happening in the next three months (August, September and October) to Europe. But we’re seeing that as well as all of next year further out.

“Destinations we’re seeing are Switzerland; we’re seeing Italy; we’re seeing Scotland, Norway, Canada.”

Rail travel

What’s coming up?

But Railbookers also has “a number of new products coming” that will particularly appeal to the Aussie market.

“The beauty for us is that … when we see a pattern, we turn it into a package. And we’re seeing so many new creative itineraries that’ll be out very soon,” he told  Karryon .

“We’re seeing Australians do different combinations in Europe that we’ve never seen before.”

Meanwhile, Marini lauded the company’s 24/7 support for travel advisors “no matter where they are”.

“So if I just bought a rail ticket, what happens if there’s a strike as we see with the French and the Italians at times; the train’s delayed, where do I go? We’ve got people around the world 24/7.”

Railbookers  is currently offering travel advisors  an incentive of up to $100  on top of regular commission when they sell 2023 independent rail holidays.
