quicksand band uk tour

Quicksand sits on an uneasy perch when evaluating music from the ‘90s. Too angular to be grunge but too tuneful to be purely hardcore, Quicksand throws it lot in with other hard-yet-unable-to-pigeonhole acts such as Jawbox, Therapy? and Helmet. Unlike grunge, which taps into outsider longing and apathy, Quicksand’s lyrics reside more in the brain than the viscera. In honor of the 30th anniversary of their debut record, Slip , Quicksand is now touring and playing that album in its entirety.

Like contemporaries such as Fugazi, Quicksand created dense yet penetrable music that goes heavier than most punk and features more technically proficient playing. Yes, Walter Schreifels’ vocals were angsty but there was something powerful in Quicksand’s music that is difficult to pin down. Though never as popular as Soundgarden and Tool, other bands who liked to play in drop D, Quicksand’s cult of devoted fans are likely to be thrilled by this tour.

Despite the album’s angry roots, Quicksand seemed overjoyed to be playing this material again. Launching right into “Fazer,” the show lasted a quick 75 minutes as the band played the 12 tracks from Slip and then four other songs. Schreifels and company supplied the crowd with instant energy as they moved about the stage, jumping and smiling to punctuate some of the biggest moments in the songs.

The band remained faithful to Slip , not straying much from recorded iterations of the songs. Original members Alan Cage (drums) and Sergio Vega (bass) were joined by guitarist Stephen Brodsky who became part of Quicksand in 2021. Original guitarist Tom Capone was arrested for shoplifting while on tour in 2017 and never came back to the band. Though Brodsky did not appear on Slip his guitar playing matched up well with what we hear on the record.

Though most of the audience danced and sang along, a small mosh pit did erupt towards the front. However, only a handful of guys took turns bumping into one another in the pit and the energy died down a little as the concert progressed. Only once did security have to warn a patron about getting too out of hand. Thirty years ago, things likely would have been very different.

After finishing with Slip , Schreifels thanked the crowd and then played “Colossus” from 2021 album, Distant Populations before finishing the set with a pair of Manic Compression songs: “Thorn in My Side” and “Landmine Spring.” As soon as the first notes of “Landmine Spring” filled the auditorium, the mosh pit began in earnest. The band came out once more to play “Delusional” and that was it.

In a time when many ‘90s acts are airing out their records to cash-in on nostalgia, Quicksand isn’t phoning it in. Even better than the songs themselves is the palatable joy that exists among the four men on the stage. The energy and passion are there. Just before the show began, a guy in the audience began shouting, “Come on, gray hairs! Come on, gray hairs!” You don’t need to be young to feel angry. And just because you’re old doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy something you enjoyed in the past.

"I know that sounds mystical or whatever, but it's more of a feel thing with music. We have that and we know it's special."

Here’s what Bruce Springsteen played as he kicked off 2024 UK and European tour in Cardiff

It was the start of a three-month UK and European run that will climax at Wembley Stadium in July

Bruce Springsteen kicked off his UK and European tour last night (May 5) in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium – read on for the full setlist and footage from the gig.

The Boss played his first show in Wales for 11 years at the start of a three-month string of dates that will take him up to two climactic shows at London’s Wembley Stadium on 25 and 27 July.

The three-hour, 29-song setlist opened with a deep cut in the form of ‘So Young And In Love’, an outtake from the 1974 recording sessions for ‘Born To Run’ that finally saw a release as part of the 1998 box set ‘Tracks’. It was the song’s first performance since 2013.

“It’s great to be in Cardiff, it’s good to be in Wales,” Springsteen said to introduce the show. “The E Street Band is here tonight to bring you the joyous power of rock ‘n’ roll. We’re gonna need some help, we’re gonna need a lot of help, we’re gonna need a shit load of help!”

As is now customary at Springsteen shows, diehard fans held up signs with song requests, and on this occasion, the E Street Band complied with performances of ‘Better Days’ and ‘If I Was the Priest’. Springsteen introduced the latter by saying: “Here’s a song I wrote 50 years ago. It was what I was busy doing while you weren’t here.”

IF I WAS A PRIEST IN CARDIFF ( @springsteen says they never performed it before but they have lol.) WRITTEN 50 YEARS AGO!! And YES it gets requested a lot lol! Springsteen has been digging deep into his catalogue for his 2024 shows – he recently enlisted  Tom Morello  to  help perform ‘Open All Night’ and ‘Sherry Darling’ for the first time on this tour in April, for example, while he also gave a rare airing to ‘Seeds’ in Connecticut .

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played in Cardiff:

‘So Young And In Love’  ‘Lonesome Day’  ‘No Surrender’  ‘Prove It All Night’  ‘Darlington County’  ‘Ghosts’  ‘Better Days’  ‘The Promised Land’  ‘Spirit In The Night’  ‘Hungry Heart’  ‘If I Was The Priest’  ‘My City Of Ruins’  ‘Nightshift’  ‘The River’  ‘Last Man Standing’  ‘Backstreets’  ‘Because The Night’  ‘She’s The One’  ‘Wrecking Ball’  ‘The Rising’  ‘Badlands’  ‘Thunder Road’  ‘Born In The USA’  ‘Born To Run’  ‘Bobby Jean’  ‘Dancing In The Dark’  ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out’  ‘Twist And Shout’ ‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’

Elsewhere, the Boss recently  took part in Mark Knopfler’s star-studded charity re-recording of ‘Going Home’ , which starred the likes of  Queen ‘s  Brian May ,  Bruce Springsteen ,  Black Sabbath ’s Tony Iommi,  Eric Clapton ,  Rolling Stones  guitarist  Ronnie Wood  and many more.

He also  made a cameo appearance in a recent episode of  Curb Your Enthusiasm , and released the career-spanning compilation ‘Best Of Bruce Springsteen’ in April via Sony Music.

90s MTV with silver-screen glamour … Olivia Rodrigo at the Glasgow OVO Hydro.

Olivia Rodrigo review – raging rock opera from a gen Z powerhouse

OVO Hydro, Glasgow Rodrigo’s second UK tour showcases a confident star at ease with all-out punk-rock and intimate pop alike

T oilet sinks are streaked with purple glitter and lost hair ribbons decorate the foyer. Olivia Rodrigo has not yet arrived, but the Hydro already feels like a teen girl’s bedroom. On stage, Guts – the title of her Grammy-nominated second album – is spelled out by towering, melting candles. A soldout crowd, clad in homemade merch, scream when the T teeters and falls; they know it means the show’s about to start.

Expectations are sky-high for the American singer-songwriter’s second UK tour, not least because her original opening night was rescheduled due to ongoing technical problems with Manchester’s new Co-op Live arena . Rodrigo’s previous visit, in 2022 , intentionally played to small venues that could barely meet demand; a smart decision she has described as “ultimate practice” in stagecraft, designed to balance out her rapid rise to fame in 2021.

Breezy confidence … Olivia Rodrigo performing in Glasgow.

That patience, and practice, pays off tonight. Rodrigo skips on stage with the proud, puffed-out chest of a WWE wrestler, over the surging bass line from her sarcastic pop-punk rager Bad Idea Right? Her band would have been riot grrrl heroines in another decade; they careen through an extended outro stuffed with guitar solos while Rodrigo pogos and headbangs and air-guitars with dorky dance-like-nobody’s-watching exuberance.

Collaging a grungy, 90s MTV vibe with silver-screen glamour, the show flicks between all-out rock show and elegant, intimate pop balladeering. Rodrigo tucks her Dr Martens under a grand piano to perform her break-out single Drivers License, but later uses them to stomp on a camera set into the stage. For Vampire, a showstopping, stormy rock opera, she is cast in black and white like a cursed silent film heroine, yet still curls her lip to snarl the song’s furious accusation: “Fame- fucker. ”

Rodrigo rides around the arena on a glowing half moon prop to sing Logical, a Guts album track about a manipulative relationship, but ear-splitting cheering from each section of the crowd as she floats nearer relegates it to background music. Other ballads shine with far simpler treatment; she sits cross-legged with guitarist Daisy Spencer for Happier, from her blockbuster first album Sour, and turns it into a campfire song.

The 21-year-old leads her band with breezy confidence, somersaults her ballads’ big notes with ease and instead focuses on delivering feeling . No wonder she saves Good 4 U and Get Him Back! for the encore: in a feat of stamina, she runs, leaps, bounces and screams through the two pop-rock teen anthems with total commitment to their messy, witty lyrics.

But it’s on All-American Bitch that she directly confronts those enormous expectations. A cathartic, sarcastic song inspired by Joan Didion, the track implodes under the weight of societal pressure – “I’m built like a mother and a total machine” goes one brutal line. “Think about someone that pisses you off and scream your fucking heads off!” Rodrigo yells and thousands of young women take the cue. “I know my place … and this is it,” she shrieks, every inch at home.
