Thank you for a wonderful reply. I just want to clear up any misconception regarding the prayer above.

There are a few responses on this thread that seem to feel that praying for God to heal someone from autism or even other handicaps is some slight against them as a person, or an indication that somehow it is detracting from a person's value. None of those things are true. Having autism or some other handicap is also not an indicator that the person with that issue is somehow unlovable or unaccepted. I noticed that you mentioned that praying against Autism somehow was equated in your mind as a parent not having the ability to love her accept their child the way they were. That was never my intention to communicate that in writing this prayer.

There are amazing people in all different kinds of Packaging and some of those include people with handicaps or other diagnosis. But there are also many parents and individuals that are hoping for a miracle in their body or in their child and I don't think it's wrong for us to believe that With God all things are possible. I do hope that this has cleared up any miscommunication or misunderstanding.

Prudence to know when to seek help and advice from others.

Interests that he he can both immerse himself in and that can offer him an opportunity to contribute to his world.

Friends who will love him as he his, enjoy his eccentricities, and be there in his need.

Wisdom to understand that none of thesenone of them are the result of luck or birth, but of his own choices.

Please, Lord, when I cannot be there, send Your angels to keep my child from harm, and guide him always closer to the peace and love and light that is You.

Thank you, Lord, for this precious child. Thank you for his sweetness, his uniqueness, and for all the potential You have blessed him with. I pray, Lord, that you help us discover the key that will unlock his potential. Please continue each day to open his mind and heart to the outside world. Awaken those areas of his brain that are not functioning as they should, and strengthen him in mind, body and spirit. Bring him the gift of awareness, so that he can enjoy the wonderful gift of relationship with family, friends, and most of all, with You. Bring the autistic child a good night's sleep at night, so that he and his family can receive the restorative rest they need. Lord, you said, I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. We pray for the gift of abundant life for all who are living with autism spectrum disorders. We pray for the children and adults on the spectrum who struggle to understand how the social world operates, and therefore have difficulties fitting in. Please allow them to experience dignity and the joy in life that their natural anxieties at times prohibit them from. We pray for their parents and other family members, whose challenge is to never lose hope as they work hard with love to guide and discipline. Keep us mindful of the strength with which you grant to anyone who asks for it and help us to share our faith in you with individuals in all developmental stages. We pray for catechists and teachers, especially when they don't understand that the persistent talking out or unusual behaviors that a person on the spectrum may demonstrate are not meant to undermine their authority. Help them to see the gifts of these individuals through your eyes and those of the people who love them most. We pray for members of our faith communities, that they replace their stares and looks of disapproval with understanding and compassion for people on the spectrum, who daily face great challenges, yet are trying to live the abundant life you have called them to. My son is functionally non-verbal, so for me, the hardest part is not knowing what’s going on inside him. I can see how he wants to share his world with me, but doesn’t know how. I want to be in on his jokes, and understand the things that frustrate him, but he can’t tell me. That’s the hardest part, because I know it’s hard for him, too.

How can you keep faith during seasons of unanswered prayers and beat the cynical spirit?

This isn’t easy, but what I try to do is to get out of the way of my own faith. It’s not all about me. My experience isn’t big enough to make conclusions about the whole of reality, or about the goodness of an omnipresent, eternal God. Just because I am going through some difficult times doesn’t mean God isn’t answering prayers. He might, in fact, be answering my neighbor’s prayer. He might be blessing my co-workers or family members in some beautiful ways. It is essential that I open my eyes to these blessings, even if I am not the one who benefits, because they prove that God is still active, and still working toward the benefit of his people.

When we take time to acknowledge His work in others, it can still tempt us toward jealousy, but we don’t have to go there. Rather, we can celebrate such victories as if they were our own. We can import celebration.

Please share the penguin story; what made this event so meaningful for you and your family?

When Jack was eight, my prayer was simple. I wanted him to know how much we loved him. I wanted him to be aware of our relationship. But he only had a handful of words, so we never knew what was happening in his mind.

One day, though, he brought home a book from the school library. It was a book for very small children called “I like it when.” On every page, it showed the same two penguins—a big one and a little one—sharing various daily life activities. The words corresponded with the pictures: “I like it when you tickle me,” “I like it when you hold my hand,” etc.

Jack was enthralled by the book, and my wife called me at work telling me I had to see what he was doing. When I came home, he was lying on his bed, laughing hysterically.

“What is it, bud?” I asked.

He turned to the first page where the penguins were holding hands. He pointed at the little penguin, then the big one, and said in a crystal clear voice, “Jack and Daddy.”

He turned the page and said it again: “Jack and Daddy.” On every page, he saw a familiar scenario: a boy and his dad sharing life. I was weeping by page three.

That moment was so big for me, because he had NEVER used language in that way before. Ever. And when he did, he showed me that my prayer was answered. Jack really did understand our relationship after all.

How can you experience the grace of God through mini miracles?

I think God is always doing things around us, but we often don’t even notice them. Sometimes we are so blinded by the big unresolved issues in our lives that we miss the smaller, daily victories that God is blessing us with. What we need to do—and this is a hard thing, I know—is to open our eyes and look for those things. Man cannot live by big miracle alone. Those are rare. But His mercies are not rare. They are new every morning. If we start looking for those graces, we will start to see them.

How did you get into your son’s world?

The most effective way was through his movies. Jack loves Pixar and Dreamworks films, and he can quote them. We all became experts in his movies. We know the lines, we know the songs. My sons will act out entire scene for him from movies like Up or Ratatouille . My daughters will paint pictures or make clay characters from Kung Fu Panda or Monsters Inc . And I will talk to him in the voices of Gru, Mike Wazowski, or Lightning McQueen. I especially love to use the voices of the father characters from those movies, because that really resonates with him. When we’ve become more intentional about stuff like this, he has opened up more and more.

What was your son’s world like?

This is hard for me to say, because we only catch glimpses. Some of it is sad. He relates so much, for example, with characters like Mater from the Cars movies, because Mater is awkward. “I awkward,” he told my wife one day when she was talking about school. And he also relates to Arlo from the Good Dinosaur , because Arlo is anxious about everything. He went through a long season of panic attacks this year, in which he would yell a line that Arlo said: “I ain’t coward!”

But then, some of it is colorful and fun and hilarious. One day, he was sitting on the back of our car and fell off in the driveway. His big sister ran to him and said, “Jack, are you okay?” And the situation must have reminded him of a scene in Kung Fu Panda when Po, the Panda, rushes in to see if his Master Shift is still alive. Jack looked at his sister and stole Shifu’s line: “I’m not dead, you idiot!” She about fell down laughing.

I love seeing those glimpses into his world, and I love it when he shows us something new.

What was the breakthrough with Jack’s autism?

There hasn’t been one giant breakthrough that stands out, but there have been many hurdles he’s overcome to make his life (and ours) much easier. We weren’t sure, early on, if he would ever conquer potty training. At five, he finally did. That was big. And the penguin book incident was big, too, because he used conceptual language. Last year, he had a big breakthrough when he rode the bus by himself. Those are three that stand out. We are always hoping and praying for more. What is the way of the aching joy?

When we go through hard times in life, many people either decide to be miserable, diving into despair and addictions, etc. Other people go the other way, forcing themselves that everything is fine and wonderful. The way of aching joy is a lifestyle where we embrace both the pain and the joy.

his is especially pertinent for us in the special needs community, I think. Parents often feel pressured into two camps. In one camp, everyone is angry, heartbroken, and on the verge of burnout. That camp rails against the diagnosis, and wants to vent. The other camp celebrates the diagnosis, and revels in the distinctive joys of the diagnosis. In this camp, there is very little negativity allowed.

But I don’t think it needs to be this way. I think this type of tribal division is extremely unhealthy. Life is nuanced. An autism diagnosis can be very hard, and we need to acknowledge that and let people work through that. But it’s not all sadness. There is life and beauty and laughter and life. We need to open our eyes to those blessings.

In my book, I talk a lot about how those two perspectives are linked. We cannot separate them. Not really. If we want to numb our sadness, we will invariably numb our happiness, too. So rather than convincing ourself that life is either all darkness or all rainbows, it’s better to work through all the range of emotions we experience. When we do that, we can become better parents, and better people.

What are some lessons God has taught you through autism?

He’s taught me so many things, but one of them is my own need for community. I never realized the extent to which I needed others. I’m not strong enough to carry myself through life’s messes. I need help. I need God. I need friends.

How has your church family supported you during the autism journey?

My church family is amazing. I don’t know where we’d be without them. When they hired my wife and I to the pastoral staff, we all realized we needed someone to help with Jack on Sunday mornings. So we hired a professional teacher at an early intervention program, and opened up a room for Jack and any other kids with developmental issues who were not able to hang with the Sunday morning service or the kids classes. That allowed us to really enter into worship with the church community, and to bless other families with the same challenges. That ministry has grown considerably, and many special needs families have found a home with us as a result.

Beyond that, our church really did become our family, and it happened quickly. They counseled with us, let us cry, sent us out on date nights, brought us meals during rough patches, and prayed for us from the beginning. In 2017, they even joined us on a 5K Run for Autism, which was put on by a local school for autistic children. We made t-shirts, and had over 60 people come out and run with us to show support. It was one of the most moving days I’ve ever experienced.

What advice would you give to parents whose child with autism experiences seasons of regression?

Don’t try to go through it alone. Don’t try to put on a brave face all the time. Find people who will embrace you in your weakness; who will let you vent, but not keep on venting; people who can pray with you and remind you that this season you’re in will not last forever. There will be pain in the night, but joy in the morning.

Please share a humorous story

About two years ago, my wife had to take Jack to the doctor for a procedure where they had to put him to sleep. Sara talked him through it, and he seemed to understand, but was not happy about it. When the time came, they put a mask on him to administer the gas, and he struggled a little. Of course, the nurses couldn’t understand anything he said in his protest.

Finally, he let them put it on, and he could feel himself getting woozy. He looked up at his mom, and quoted a line from one of the Lion King sequels. It was from Pumpa, the husky warthog. Jack made his voice husky, too, as he said, “I told you this wasn’t a good idea,” then promptly fell asleep.

The nurses all gasped, looking at my wife. She smiled and said, “it’s okay. You can laugh.” And they all did. He had used the line in perfect context. That our boy.

Are you looking for a breakthrough? Waiting for something to happen that hasn’t happened in a long time?

God has a specific formula on how to get your breakthrough. Why is it some people can pray prayers and things happen right away while others have to wait for such a long time for anything to happen? We would like to share with you some scriptures and a step by step formula and prayer to step into your breakthrough for this year.

First, let’s look at some bible scriptures that give an outline for breakthrough and let’s look at some stories in the bible on how men and women of God have received exactly what they asked for in prayer.

1. Confess your sins. Repent.

There are some that think because we are Christians we don’t sin. This is not truth. We are still sinners and we sin just about everyday in our thoughts and deeds. Some are sins of commission (we did something wrong) or sins of omission (we failed to do something that we should do) Therefore, we need to ask for forgiveness of our sin BEFORE we ask God to give us anything. We have to make sure that there is nothing standing in the way of our prayers being answered.

“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!”

2. Make sure that what you are asking for is the will of God

God is not going to answer prayers that are not according to His will. Find the scriptures in the bible that support your request and this will be the basis of your request. God’s word is the truth and He is obligated to fulfill His word.

1 John 5:14-15 (NIV)

“ This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

John 8:32 (NIV)

“ Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

3. Ask God to endow you with faith to believe

For the breakthrough to happen you must have faith that God will answer your prayer.

Acts 1:8 (NIV)

“ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

4. Be Persistent. This is the most important point.

Matthew 7:7-12 (NIV) Ask, Seek, Knock

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Here’s another story of persistence…

Luke 18:1-8 (NIV)

The parable of the persistent widow.

“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’” And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

And a story of faith and persistence in prayer …

1 Kings 18:41-45 (NIV)

And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.

“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.

“There is nothing there,” he said.

Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”

So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”

Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

Most High God, I come before you covered under the blood of Jesus and I thank you for the forgiveness that He has imparted to me by dying for my sins. I pray that you would bind the hand of the enemy so that I will not be tempted in this area again but I know that if he comes again you will provide a way for me to escape the temptation. I stumbled into this tonight July 19th 2023.I know within me it was spirit led. I will be embarking into fasting for forgiveness and healing and restoration for my family and partner. Im excited that my testimony of breakthrough is next in JESUS NAME! All glory to His Name. Amen!

I pray this prayer as I sit in court waiting for the Judge to grant an Ex Parte request that I filed. The scripture that came to mind was “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.” I’m standing, believing, and trusting. It is currently 2:39 p.m. I will update with good news shortly. 🙏🏾

07/13/2020 – Update: The judge denied the ex parte request but I have to appear in court again on 07.21.20. *Sigh* This has been a long, uphill battle but I continue to ask, seek, and knock.

Autism is surely a difficult thing to navigate, both for children with autism and for parents who have children with autism.

However, the difficulties that we face in life are also opportunities in which God shines his light upon us as he pours out his strength, grace, and mercy.

As you wait on the Lord through the difficulties of parenting a child with autism, know that prayer is your primary tool for strength and that you can call upon God in every moment, no matter how you feel.

Here are some Bible verses and prayers for you to use to do just that as you navigate autism spectrum disorder with your child.

God loves you and your special needs children, and God's love will surely comfort you through His Word.

Psalm 139:13-14 - Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

Dear God, thank you for my special child who is fearfully and wonderfully made and is a child of God.

Although they may have great challenges that are different from other children, you love them just the same and my soul knows it very well.

As I continue to do my best to handle one of my greatest joys, parenting my child, please give me the strength and the strong faith that I need to parent them well.

Give me the understanding that I need to know what they are going through and how I can best help them get through it.

Thank you for how you have made them and for the blessing that they are in my life. I pray these things in the authority of Jesus Christ, amen.

Isaiah 41:10 - God Will Strengthen You

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God, thank you for being a God that gives his people strength. Thank you for the fact that neither I nor my child has to fear because you are with us.

You give us strength to get through the days, especially when the days are hard, and, for that, I thank you.

Please continue to uphold me and my child as we navigate the difficulties of life. Continue to provide us with the strength and the great joy that we need and be with us through it all. I ask all of these things in Jesus’ name, amen.

Psalm 46:1 - God Is a Present Help

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Father God, you are a present help in the troubles of life. Even when things are difficult and I am running out of patience, you are my refuge and my strength.

Thank you for being a place of solace and peace for both me and my child as we try to get through the difficulties of life together.

Whenever we come up against tough times, may you always be with us and give us strength as we need it.

Thank you for the wonderful gift of relationship with you and for being present every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

Romans 8:28 - All Things Work Together

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

O Lord, today I just want to sit and think about the amazing truth that you work all things together for good.

Dear Lord, we know from these verses in Isaiah that those who wait for the Lord will be made strong and will not faint.

I pray that this truth will come to life in my life and in my child’s life. Even though we struggle at times to deal with the difficulty of autism, I know that you are always there to lift us up when we need it.

Help us to lean wholly on you in all things and to trust you to strengthen us. Help us to break free of all strongholds of the mind and any influence the outside world has on us.

By your healing touch , remove any spirit of fear and instead give us a spirit of deep gladness and sound mind by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 1:3 - God Is Our Comfort

“…who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

Heavenly Father, it is amazing that you are a God that is close by. You aren’t just far away in a place that we can’t reach.

Instead, you are close at hand and are a comfort to us when we need comfort. God, please be with me and my child as we deal with the difficulty of autism in our lives.

Psalm 121:1-2 - Help Comes From the Lord

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

Lord God, it is so easy to try to rely on our own strength.

As my child and I try to work together to grow and thrive, it is so easy to get down on ourselves because we think we have to have it all together on our own.

Yet, as your Word says, our help comes from you, the creator of all that we see.

So I pray that you would be with us in our troubles, that as we look to you, we would be both helped and strengthened in your spirit.

Psalm 34:18 - God Is Near to the Brokenhearted

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

God, I would be lying if I said that I never feel crushed in spirit. The weight and burden that autism carries can be very heavy at times and I can feel it in my heart.

Yet, even in that, I know that your Word says that you will be near to the brokenhearted and that you will save the crushed in spirit.

So I ask that you would be near to me and my child in difficult times. Strengthen us, give us peace, and give us the comfort of your presence always.

I ask these things in the name of your Son, amen.

2 Corinthians 12:9 - Boast of Your Weaknesses

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

God, it is such a beautiful truth that you take our weaknesses and make them into strengths by the power of Christ.

Even when we feel weak from things that weigh us down, your strength always shines through and we can therefore boast gladly in our weaknesses.

I pray that this would be true of me and my child, that we would boast in our weaknesses because they display the power of Christ.

Give us the strength and the peace to be comfortable with our weaknesses. I ask these things in the blessed name of Jesus, amen.

Deuteronomy 31:8 - God Goes Before You

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

Merciful Lord, even though I sometimes struggle to be a parent to a child with autism, I know that you go before me.

Prayers for Breakthrough: What Every Believer Needs to Pray

There are many different ways to pray. But among prayers for comfort, peace, and healing, there is a type of prayer that often comes up: a prayer for "breakthrough." What is a breakthrough and how do we pray for one?

The loose definition of a "spiritual breakthrough" pertains to a new level of spirituality being reached. The definition of "breakthrough", in general, is a sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development or achieving success in a particular sphere or activity . Some examples of a breakthrough are when a person gets saved, gets a deeper understanding of Biblical truth, receives an answer to prayer, or has victory over sin.

Examples of Breakthrough in the Bible

Although the words “spiritual breakthrough” are not mentioned specifically in the Bible, there are instances of what we call breakthrough. The book of Acts is full of these examples. Saul had a spiritual breakthrough—a literal eye-opening experience—when he sees who Jesus really is ( Acts 9 ). Peter had a breakthrough in Joppa when he realized the gospel is meant for everyone, not just those who follow Christ ( Acts 10 ). In both of these situations, there was a struggle that finally got to the breaking point and was resolved.

Kinds of Breakthrough

There are many kinds of breakthrough that we pray for. Things like a breakthrough in our jobs and our side hustles, breakthrough in treatments for illnesses and diseases, and breakthrough for our children when they choose to go a different way. We pray for friends and relatives who have all kinds of struggles: from depression to anxiety to mental illness. We also pray for them to have breakthrough in either their relationship with the Lord or the renewing of that relationship. And we pray for breakthrough in our own relationship with the Lord in all different seasons.

Praying for Breakthrough

Many times we pray for general breakthrough and wait for something to happen. We never think about asking for the specific breakthroughs that we need. Still, it can be incredibly hard to know what to pray, how to pray, or what to ask for. One of the easiest ways to rectify this is to pray God’s word back to him . When we do this, we align our desires and perspectives with His, which brings spiritual breakthrough.

For example, I have a friend who struggles with a lot of different issues. When I pray for him I include the passage from Isaiah 43:19 , “For I am about to do a brand-new thing. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway in the wilderness for my people to come home. I will create rivers for them in the desert.”

Why do I pray this verse specifically? Because I believe with all my heart that the Lord is working in my friend's heart and life. I truly believe that his breakthrough is coming and that his relationship with the Lord will be renewed. I think that believing in breakthrough is just as important as praying and asking for it. From there, we need to listen closely and walk in obedience to what we are told in regards to the breakthrough that is coming.

New Film 'Ezra,' Stars De Niro, Spotlights Dad, Son's Autism Journey

N ORTH FORK, NY — There's a film opening this week that's a triumphant testament to the powerful bond between a parent and a child — a tour de force that celebrates family, loyalty, and deep, abiding love.

Written by the North Fork's Tony Spiridakis — the founder and executive director of the new North Fork Arts Center at the Sapan Greenport Theatre, as well as the revered Manhattan Film Institute — the film is directed by Spiridakis' longtime friend and collaborator Tony Goldwyn.

"Ezra," according to a release, spotlights the story of a stand-up comedian, Max Bernale, played by Bobby Cannavale, living with his father, portrayed by Robert De Niro — while co-parenting his autistic son Ezra (William Fitzgerald) with his ex-wife, in a performance by Rose Byrne.

"When forced to confront difficult decisions about their son’s future, Max and Ezra embark on a cross-country road trip that has a transcendent impact on both their lives," the description reads.

The cast also features Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson and Whoopi Goldberg.

"'Ezra' is an endearing and often funny exploration of a family determined to find their way through life’s complexities with humor, compassion, and heart," according to Bleeker Street Media LLC, the production company that acquired the film after the Toronto International Film Festival.

The premise of the film centers on Max, who, to keep Ezra from being enrolled in a school he doesn't believe will be best for him, takes his son on a road trip to Los Angeles; the boy's mother reports the boy kidnapped and a nationwide Amber Alert is issued.

Spiridakis recently cut the ribbon on the new NFAC after a hometown, community-driven fundraising campaign to raise $1 million, save the theater and create a not-for-profit arts center saw an outpouring reminiscent of "It's A Wonderful Life".

And now, Spiridakis will see "Ezra" debut at the NFAC, at the very theater in Greenport that holds so much of his heart.

Guests will be able to view the debut on May 31; the event will include small bites and wine, with the film shown in all three theaters and Goldwyn introducing the film. After the premiere, a Q and Q will take place with Cannavale, Byrne, and Goldwyn, with that interview simulcast in each theater.

For those that miss the opening performance, "Ezra" will be shown at the NFAC for three weeks, Spiridakis said.

"Ezra" symbolizes a 12-year journey for Spiridakis, born of his own love for his son Dimitri, who is autistic.

"I started writing scenes about what I was going through in my life with my son. I thought, 'I'm going to write this down, to capture what it was like,'" Spiridakis said. "One scene led to another."

Three years ago, Spiridakis' lifetime friend Goldwyn — known for his iconic role in "Ghost" —read a draft, and said, "Let's do this," he said.

Cannavale was soon cast as Max. And then, he said, there was Robert De Niro, in the role of Ezra's grandfather.

"It was a hail mary," Spiridakis said. "The odds of getting Robert De Niro to be in your movie are slim to none."

But De Niro, who has a son on the autism spectrum, as well, read the script and in just three days, reached out, Spiridakis said. "He said, 'Look, I'm interested, but we need some more work done.'"

Spiridakis found a way to add the three scenes De Niro had suggested, and the proverbial stars aligned.

Producers John Kilik and William Horberg were soon onboard.

"We found an incredible young actor to play Ezra," Spiridakis said. "William Fitzgerald is a 13-year-old boy, who's also autistic and who has never acted before. From the beginning, he was absolutely brilliant. There is such great chemistry with Bobby Cannavale, playing Max, with Rose Byrne and Robert De Niro."

Spiridakis added: "This film is extremely special. It's a real labor of love — two best friends who got together to make a movie. Tony Goldwyn is not just an actor and director — he's my son's godfather and uncle. He's family."

Writing the film was a deeply meaningful journey for Spiridakis, he said.

"This was about leaving information behind, in an entertaining and moving film. Hopefully, this will help other families who have loved ones on the spectrum," Spiridakis said. "The whole point of the film is to have people feel as though they have common ground. So many people carry these experiences — it's great to see it represented on the screen in such an authentic way."

Both Horberg and De Niro also have shared Spiridakis' experience, of raising beloved neurodivergent children on the spectrum, he said. "We came to this with a lot of experience. When we made the film, we made sure we did it with love."

Spiridakis' life with Dimitri also inspired his 2017 television pilot "Greenport," filmed around the village. "The show was a precursor to this film, about a person trying to get a movie made. I was turning it into a flat-out comedy — a way to make people able to laugh."

He added: "'Ezra' does that, as well, it has the same kind of DNA. At times, it's a very funny film. But make no mistake, it's a drama."

To do both, and do it well, to "thread that needle, is hard to do," Spiridakis said.

The film has generated much buzz, an official pick of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, with reviews praising the sensitive and emotional tour de force. "Ezra," Deadline said , is "a touching testament to the power of love," adding that Cannavale "is nothing short of brilliant."

Julia Roberts, whose husband cinematographer Danny Moder worked on the film, praised Whoopi Goldberg's performance while appearing on "The View." "Ezra," she said during the interview, is a "beautiful movie."

But despite the accolades and acclaim, as well as a star-studded cast and crew, "Ezra" is, at its heart, a love letter from a parent to a child.

One line in the film resonates. "You know, the word 'autism' comes from Greek, 'in your own world,'" Cannavale says, as Max. "I don't want him in his own world. I want him in this world."

The emotions depicted are universal, Spiridakis said. "It’s not only a film about the parenting of a neurodivergent child. It's about parenting, period. Whether your son or daughter is on the spectrum or not, the film speaks to parents — it's about what we all we go through."

All parents, Spiridakis said, will recognize those moments when sometimes there's a misstep, when they do the wrong thing in the name of love — when all they really wanted to do was to help their child.

For all parents, there's a learning curve, he said. "At times in this film, you have the audience yelling at the father on the screen, saying, 'Don't do that!' But by the end, you recognize that he did it because he loved his kid so much. That's really the essence of this film."

His own son Dimitri loves the movie, Spiridakis said; he's also a fan of William Fitzgerald, who plays Ezra. "He thought he was incredible," he said.

Dimitri, he said, was recently honored in Los Angeles, his artwork on display at the Writers Guild of America, where he also attended a fundraiser for autism. Dimitri will also be in Greenport at the film's premiere on Friday.

"It's really kind of beautiful," Spiridakis said. "That kid — there are literally lines in this movie that come right out of Dimitri's mouth. I've never kidnapped him," he laughed. "But it is Dimitri's brilliant spirit that I tried to capture. His spirit, like so many other kids on the spectrum — we really have to let them be themselves. We can't try to force them to be something that they're not. There's this thing, autism, that makes them different. And there's so much beauty in that difference."

The film has helped bond him even more deeply with his own sons, Spiridakis said. "It makes me feel so close to Nikos and Dimitri," he said. "They got to see their dad make mistakes in their lives and not give up. Doing this movie really helped bring us closer — and I'm really proud of that."

He added, "I pray that this film will help other families."
