2023 Wyndham Championship leaderboard, scores: Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover share lead after Round 3

Just 18 holes remain in the pga tour's regular season with an exciting finish on tap at sedgefield country club.

Momentum is a hell of a thing, and few have been able to harness it more effectively than Billy Horschel over the last decade. Capturing his first top-15 finish in a stroke-play event of the year last week at the 3M Open, Horschel has ridden this mini wave of momentum into a share of the 54-hole lead at the 2023 Wyndham Championship at 18 under.

Carding rounds of 62 and 63 the last two days at Sedgefield Country Club, Horschel finds his name atop the leaderboard alongside Lucas Glover's heading into Sunday's deciding final round. Both players entered the week outside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings, and both are currently projected to jump inside the top 70 with either a victory or runner-up result.

This Horschel stretch has come out of nowhere. Just nine weeks removed from shooting 84 at the Memorial Tournament and confirming his game was nowhere near where it needed to be, Horschel looks to have found it in Greensboro, North Carolina. The comeback will have to be earned as not only will Glover present a challenge but so will Russell Henley who's one stroke back at 17 under and Byeong Hun An who's just two strokes worse.

The leaders

T1. Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover (-18)

No one was better than Glover on Saturday as he tied Michael Kim for the lowest round with an 8-under 62. Carding a total of nine birdies, including three in his final four holes, the 43-year-old made a massive leap up not only the leaderboard but the FedEx Cup standings. Glover may be content with either a win or runner-up result as both would move him inside the top 70, a but a victory has to be top of mind as it would put him exactly 50th and inside the BMW Championship cut-off point.

Other contenders

3. Russell Henley (-17) 4. Byeong Hun An (-15) 5. Stephen Jaegar (-13) 6. Michael Kim (-11) T7. Eric Cole, J.T. Poston, Brendon Todd, Adam Svensson (-10)

An is a player who arrived at the Wyndham Championship very much flying under the radar despite finishing on the podium at the Scottish Open and a top 25 at The Open, and he could make a nice move towards the top 30 should he replicate the Scottish result. He has now carded three straight 65s with Saturday's being his 11th straight round in the 60s at the Wyndham Championship.

"I believe they're Koreans," An said of his notably rowdy fans at Sedgefield. "Do you see the Korean flag? Yeah, I guess they're Koreans. No, I didn't pay them, no. I swear to God, I didn't pay them. They just came out today."

Bubble boys

All eyes will be on Thomas as he sits just outside the top 70 with 18 holes to play. He has made up ground with a pair of solid rounds in the mid 60s, but he will need more if Sunday is not to be his final round of the season. The putter heated up in the third round, and now the iron play needs to carry its weight.

"It's hard to avoid the leaderboards, but I mean, the only way I feel I would change strategy would be in a situation where I needed to birdie the last two holes or I needed to birdie 18 or something," said Thomas. "The hope is to go play really well tomorrow and see how close to the lead we can get, and if I do that, then should be fine. It's very similar to Q-School. I didn't go into the final stage of Q-School trying to finish 45th, I went there trying to win a golf tournament. If I just came up short, then it was going to be plenty to qualify. It's a very different but somewhat similar situation here."

2023 Wyndham Championship updated odds and picks

  • Billy Horschel: 9/5
  • Lucas Glover: 2-1
  • Russell Henley: 21/10
  • Byeong Hun An: 12-1

This tournament is down to four horses, and it is surprisingly Henley who garners the most trust. Despite having experienced a heartbreak here in 2021, Henley looks to be in a comfortable spot both physically and mentally. He was the clear class of the field the first two days, and despite not having his best stuff Saturday, kept himself in the mix with two late birdies. A member of the penultimate group alongside An, Henley will have a chance to apply some pressure on the two leaders behind him on the golf course.

Glover gets within one

He nearly jarred it from the middle of the fairway, but Lucas Glover will settle for birdie on the 17th to get to 17 under. He is currently in solo second, but more importantly he is projected to jump inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Horschel maintains two-stroke edge

A nifty par save on the 14th has Billy Horschel remaining at 17 under. Russell Henley suddenly finds himself two strokes off the pace after entering the back nine with the solo lead. Horschel has flipped the script with three birdies against a bogey from Henley.

Four-man race emerging

Russell Henley and Billy Horschel share the lead at 16 under with Lucas Glover one behind at 15 under. Benny An is 13 under and the only other player within four strokes of the lead. This back nine will have a lasting impact on this tournament.

Wyndham Championship Friday leaderboard and FedEx Cup bubble watch

  • Follow on Twitter

Joohyung Kim hits his tee shot on Friday on the 13th hole at Sedgefield Country Club.

Getty Images

A leader who started his tournament with an eight. A contender who was 10 shots worse than the day before. And bubble boys. Friday’s play at the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., had a little bit of everything. Let’s take a look.

Complete leaderboard here .

Joohyung Kim is tied for the lead

Joohyung Kim is 13-under par over his past 35 holes. Of course, you know well that they play 36 over two rounds on the PGA Tour, and that’s where it gets interesting.

On the par-4 1st on Thursday, Kim marked himself down for a quadruple-bogey eight.

“I mean just, I mean, all I did was laugh. I didn’t really take it — it’s just one bad hole,” he said Friday. “Told myself, you know what, I’ve got plenty of holes to bring it back if I just play well on my next 35 holes, and that’s exactly what I did. I played better than I thought I was going to, so it’s a bonus. Yeah, just definitely happy to finish the round today and just kind of laid back knowing I’ve got the weekend to play.”

That he does, and then some. Kim, after making seven birdies and no bogeys on Thursday after his quad, recorded seven birdies and a bogey on Friday, shot a six-under 64, and he held a share of a one-stroke lead, at nine-under, with Brandon Wu and Ryan Moore when darkness stopped the second round.

Did Kim have any flashbacks to the first hole on Friday?

“Yeah, I went in the bunker again and I was like, well, here we go, just don’t make a quad,” he said. “I was like, let’s just get this on the fairway, and I did. I had a good number, I hit a great shot to two feet, and I was like, you know what, this is strokes gained right here, four shots better than yesterday, so most improved on hole No. 1.”

The relief of seeing one drop 😅 pic.twitter.com/RKA5IfsDID — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 5, 2022

38 players are within five shots of the lead

Thirty-eight players were no worse than five shots out of the lead when play was suspended. Among them were Sungjae Im, Russell Henley and John Huh, who were one shot out of the lead; and Brian Stuard , Anirban Lahiri and Davis Riley , who were two strokes back.

Notably, Huh, the first-round leader, was 10 shots worse than he was on Thursday — he shot a 61 during the first round and a 71 on Friday.

“Yeah, I think that’s golf,” Huh said. “One day I get a good break, another day I don’t get a good break.”

FedEx Cup bubble

The Wyndham also is the last event of the Tour’s regular season, with the top 125 players in the season-long FedEx Cup standings moving on to the start of next week’s playoffs. So who’s on the bubble?

According to the Tour’s live tracker , players No. 120-130 on Friday night were: No. 120 Kramer Hickok (who shot a second-round 70 and was tied for 25th); No. 121 Patton Kizzire (69, tied for 89th); No. 122 Max McGreevy (67, tied for 15th); No. 123 Webb Simpson (WD); No. 124 Brian Stuard (68, tied for seventh); No. 125 Nick Taylor (67, tied for 25th); No. 126 Martin Trainer (67, tied for 10th); No. 127 Rickie Fowler (69, tied for 89th); No. 128 Matt Wallace (69, tied for 89th); No. 129 Austin Smotherman (two holes to play, tied for 66th); No. 130 Danny Willett (70, tied for 135th).

Notably, the live tracker does not include any of the players who have left for LIV Golf and are suspended. It is unclear how the standings will officially look after Sunday’s play, though Golf Digest is reporting that the playoffs will include 125 Tour players.

Also to be determined is the fate of the three LIV players — Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones — who have petitioned a court to issue a temporary restraining order allowing their participation in the playoffs. That case will be heard on Tuesday.

The Tour’s live tracker can be found here.

The tournament, hosted by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, debuted at Muirfield Village in 1976 and is one of the PGA TOUR’s longest-running events at the same venue.

The PGA TOUR uses a standardized system for determining event fields based on the current season’s Priority Ranking while also including additional exemption and qualifying categories.

Field sizes can vary by event, as can the number of event-specific exemptions. Fully exempt PGA TOUR members are guaranteed entry into all full-field events, with various conditional categories subject to periodic reshuffles based upon FedExCup Points accrued throughout the season. Categories with "reshuffle" notation indicate that a reshuffle period has occurred.

2024 U.S. Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions from PGA golf model that nailed 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the u.s. open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

pga tour wyndham leaderboard

The No. 2 course at Pinehurst Golf Resort has hosted four majors in its history and will host five more over the next 23 years. That begins with the 2024 U.S. Open, which starts on Thursday, June 13. Wyndham Clark is the defending U.S. Open champion after his victory at Los Angeles Country Club last year and will try to follow in the footsteps of Ben Hogan, Curtis Strange and Brooks Koepka as the only players since 1950 to go back-to-back. Clark won at Pebble Beach earlier this year, has three other top-three finishes on tour, and is 22-1 in the 2024 U.S. Open odds.

Scottie Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite in the 2024 U.S. Open futures, while last year's runner-up, Rory McIlroy, is 9-1. Xander Schauffele is 10-1 coming off his first career major championship at Valhalla in the PGA Championship. Before locking in any 2024 U.S. Open picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing U.S. Open props and U.S. Open Pick 6 or PrizePicks entries, be sure to see the 2024 U.S. Open golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now with the U.S. Open 2024 approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 U.S. Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 U.S. Open: Brooks Koepka (12-1), a two-time U.S. Open champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Koepka has five major championships overall but he hasn't been much of a factor in major tournaments since that last victory at the 2023 PGA Championship. In his four majors since then, his best finish is tying for 17th at last year's U.S. Open. Koepka has finished outside the top 25 in each of his last three major starts, which is one shy of tying a career-long drought.

He's finished outside the top 15 in four straight appearances at majors and has struggled overall this season. Over his last eight tournament starts, he has twice as many finishes outside the top 25 (four) as he has inside the top 10 (two). Add in that he shot over par in his lone previous start at Pinehurst No. 2, and there are much better values to utilize U.S. Open 2024 bets on.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Bryson DeChambeau, a 20-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win than his long odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 2020 U.S. Open winner at Winged Foot has been in the hunt for his second major championship this season.

DeChambeau finished sixth at the Masters and was second at the PGA Championship. He won twice last season and has been top-20 in four of the last five major championships he's played. He leads his tour in average driving distance (318.9) and eagles per round (0.33).  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 U.S. Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the U.S. Open 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected U.S. Open leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 12 golf majors, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship .
