PGA Tour 2K23: Beginner Tips Guide

Ready to play some golf?

Quick Links

You don't need to be an expert to golf, learn the clubs, customize your clubs in the locker, grind xp and coins, allocate skill points to the essential clubs, tweak the settings, experiment with the archetypes.

Tiger Woods has once again revived the world of virtual golf with PGA Tour 2K23 , the latest installment to the universally acclaimed sports saga. Like before, players are invited to swing for stardom as an up-and-coming pro golfer over a series of dynamic courses, tournaments, and global events in its ever-evolving MyCareer mode.

PGA Tour 2K23: The 10 Best Golfers

Luckily, PGA Tour 2K23 has a litter of in-depth tutorials and starter challenges to help you take your first steps out on the green. Learning to master the sport, though, is another story, and one that involves a fair amount of trial and error backhand swings, putts, and tee-offs. But where do you begin in a world like PGA, and how exactly do you build up a certain repertoire that puts you on par with the poster children of the sport?

Updated November 21, 2023, by Sean Murray: These PGA 2K23 Tips are sure to get your golfing career off to a great start. We've tweaked this guide's formatting slightly and also given it more links to other helpful PGA 2K23 topics.

PGA Tour 2K23 does a remarkable job at accommodating both newcomers to the series and seasoned veterans who've followed it since its 1990 debut. Because of this, it's fair to say that you don't need to be an expert with all the answers to hit the grass running.

Of course, previous experience is a major plus in a series like PGA Tour, especially if you're looking to challenge others in its online multiplayer mode. That said, you can learn all there is to learn without having an existing wealth of knowledge already stowed away under your belt.

If this is your very first rodeo with PGA Tour, then rest assured that 2K doesn't expect you to be an elite golfer to make a mark on the green.

It's no secret that a lot of newcomers to the series fail to make their shots because of the clubs they choose to bring to the course. Make no mistake that missing a shot can boil down to a number of factors, but selecting the wrong club is a definite no-no in PGA Tour , and can consequently cause you to struggle to make par.

Therefore, before you hit the green, be sure to experiment with each of the varied clubs until you've grasped the basics.

PGA Tour 2K23 offers a generous selection of clubs, all of which come loaded with their own purpose. The good news here is that your caddie will determine which club you need whenever you're about to tee off.

That said, just because the caddie hands you a club doesn't mean you should always follow up with it . The more you learn about the clubs and their capabilities, the more you can test your caddie's knowledge out on the green by switching up the defaults.

You can change your club by pressing up or down on the D-Pad .

PGA Tour 2K23: All MyPLAYER Archetypes, Ranked

Your default clubs will only take you so far in a game like PGA Tour 2K23, which is precisely why you should build up enough coins to shop for upgrades . These upgrades come in the form of Fittings , which can be applied to any of your clubs in the Locker section.

You can only apply up to three Fittings for each club , and each one is scaled by rarity .

It goes without saying that adding just one of these Fittings to a club can boost your game when out on the green. Each Fitting has a number of attributes, including shot power , timing , swing path , and shaping .

Applying only the rarest will definitely give you the upper hand when fending off opponents in any of the game modes.

To make it anywhere in MyCareer , you're going to need a lot of top-shelf cosmetics . Unfortunately, cosmetics come at a price, and unless you've stashed away a whole treasury of coins, you won't be able to equip them to help triple your A game.

Therefore, you're going to want to grind XP and coins , which can be done by competing in global events and challenges .

Of course, taking part in any round will help you gain a foothold on the ladder, but to truly make an impact, you're going to want to win events and challenges . Like in PGA Tour 2K22, the higher the difficulty setting, the more XP you will acquire on completion .

Claiming consecutive wins will rack up your XP Multiplier , which will, in turn, fast-track your character to superstardom.

As you shovel your way through MyCareer, you will earn XP from beating events, which can be used to unlock a variety of perks for each of your acquired clubs . However, if you dump XP into skill trees for clubs that aren't used all that much, then you're only shooting yourself in the foot.

It's always best to prioritize allocating points to the essential clubs .

When it comes to building up your skill trees, you will want to focus on the driver , irons , wedge , and putter . As these are the clubs you'll be using the majority of the time, it's best to cram as much XP into developing their attributes and leveling up the tiers.

There is a total of 126 skills to choose from in PGA Tour 2K23, only 50 of which can be collected by leveling up your character. When it comes to picking skill trees to evolve, try and aim for the clubs you favor the most on the green .

PGA Tour 2K23: The 10 Best Courses

It may seem obvious at this point, but changing your settings to suit your personal preferences can definitely help you out in the long run. Although it is recommended that you play on a higher difficulty to maximize your chances of netting more XP, it doesn't mean you should never settle for something a little less threatening as and when needed.

If you navigate to the MyCareer Presets , you will find three adjustable sliders: Opponent Difficulty , Conditions Difficulty , and Rounds Per Event . If you're still learning the basics and aren't quite ready to dive into the deep end, then you can change the top two sliders to Very Easy , which will give you more leeway when playing rounds.

You still acquire XP for completing global events and challenges on the easier difficulties .

PGA Tour 2K23 lets you choose from five different archetypes , all of which come preloaded with their own abilities and perks. You can alter your character to accommodate any of these archetypes for free in MyCareer, and doing so can help you get a feel for each respective skill tree.

For example, the Powerhouse archetype is better suited for players wanting to drive the ball with speed and power, whereas the Greensman archetype favors putting over drive .

Before diving into any global event, you should aim to experiment with each of the five available archetypes, which are Powerhouse, Greensman, Rhythm, Sculptor, and Woodsman .

You can change your archetype between events by going to the MyPlayer menu and selecting Golfer . From here, scroll over to the Archetypes tab and pick the one that you would like to equip.

Mastering pga 2k23’s 3-click swing: tips, tricks, strategy and controversy.

pga tour 2k23 hitting tips

  • November 9, 2023

Golf enthusiasts and gamers, prepared to tee off with precision and finesse when PGA TOUR 2K23 introduced the revolutionary 3-Click Swing. This innovative feature is reshaping the virtual golfing landscape, offering both novices and pros a fresh way to experience the game’s challenges and triumphs. Whether you’re looking to casually hit the links or compete at the highest levels, the 3-Click Swing is your new secret weapon for navigating some of the most prestigious courses the digital world has to offer.

What is the 3-Click Swing in PGA 2K23?

At its core, the 3-Click Swing is a game-changer in PGA TOUR 2K23. It’s a sophisticated alternative to the traditional Swing Stick mechanics, providing a method that hinges on timing and precision rather than fluid motion. This feature allows players to engage in a three-step swing action—power, direction, and impact—each controlled by individual clicks. It’s an approach that democratizes the gameplay, opening the doors to those who might find the standard swing mechanics daunting while still posing an exciting challenge for seasoned players .

In essence, the 3-Click Swing is designed with accessibility in mind. It gives you more control over each shot, breaking down the swing into manageable segments. The first click sets the power, the second determines the swing path, and the third click finalizes the club face angle, all contributing to the ball’s trajectory and final resting place. This method is akin to a rhythm game, where your response to visual cues determines the precision of your shot. It’s a fresh take on the golfing formula, crafted for those seeking a more interactive and responsive gaming experience .

How to Execute the Perfect 3-Click Swing

Achieving the perfect 3-Click Swing in PGA TOUR 2K23 is about mastering the rhythm and timing of your clicks. Begin by holding down the A/X button to set the power of your shot, watching the circular meter fill to the desired level. Release it at the right moment to ensure your shot has the correct amount of force. The next step involves a quick tap at the top of the meter to align your swing path, followed by another tap at the bottom hash mark to adjust the club face angle for accuracy .

This mechanic ensures every swing is in your hands, quite literally. There’s no relying on pre-programmed outcomes; it’s all about your skill and your ability to read the game’s visual cues. The 3-Click Swing removes the guesswork from your gameplay, providing a more involved and engaging golfing experience that rewards practice and precision .

Comparing 3-Click Swing to Traditional Swing Mechanics

The 3-Click Swing and the traditional Swing Stick mechanics offer contrasting experiences in PGA TOUR 2K23. The Swing Stick is more about emulating the real-life movement of golf, focusing on the fluidity and rhythm of a natural swing. It requires players to maintain tempo and timing to avoid hooks and slices, and it’s perfect for those who enjoy the classic feel of golfing games .

Conversely, the 3-Click Swing is about breaking down the swing into specific, controlled stages, offering a more video game-centric approach. It adds an element of strategy, as players must carefully consider each click. This can be particularly appealing to those who prefer a methodical and tactical gaming style. While the Swing Stick may cater to the purists and those with an affinity for the physicality of the sport, the 3-Click Swing opens up the floor to those who may be more accustomed to traditional gaming mechanics, providing a bridge between the worlds of golf and gaming .

The Controversy: Should 3-Click Swing Be Allowed in PvP?

The introduction of the 3-Click Swing has sparked a debate among the top players of PGA Tour 2K23, particularly regarding its place in PvP modes. Some argue that the mechanic should be restricted, suggesting it offers an unfair advantage and deviates from the traditional skills associated with the game. Yet, others advocate for its inclusion, emphasizing the learning curve and the proficiency needed to master it.

A Player’s Perspective

“I’ve experienced the highs and lows of both swing types,” shares a top-level player who transitioned from the swing stick to the 3-Click method in PGA 2K23. “The learning curve for both is steep for beginners. There’s a bias towards the stick swing, but claims that the 3-Click is inferior are unfounded. As someone who has become proficient in both, I see no reason to discredit the 3-Click system. In fact, many new players are adopting it and learning just as quickly as those starting with the swing stick.”

This player’s experience is a testament to the balance of challenge each system presents. The 3-Click Swing, often dismissed by critics as too simplistic, requires the same dedication to master as the traditional swing stick. The debate is less about the mechanics themselves and more about the recognition of skill and adaptability among the players.

Advanced Techniques and Settings for 3-Click Swing

The 3-Click Swing in PGA TOUR 2K23 isn’t just about the basics. The game ups the ante with a variety of difficulty settings and advanced techniques designed to challenge even the most skilled players. Legend difficulty, for example, transforms the 3-Click Swing into a formidable task, requiring impeccable timing and profound understanding of the game’s physics. Advanced players can experiment with the tempo and pressure of each click, fine-tuning their swings for different weather conditions and course terrains, making the gameplay as challenging and realistic as they desire .

Community and Developer Insights on 3-Click Swing

The inclusion of the 3-Click Swing has resonated well within the PGA TOUR 2K community, with players expressing appreciation for the added accessibility and fresh challenge it brings to the game. Developers have taken note of community feedback, using it to refine the mechanic further. This back-and-forth between the players and creators has cultivated a sense of collaboration, ensuring that the 3-Click Swing is well-received and continuously improved upon .

PGA TOUR 2K23’s 3-Click Swing is a groundbreaking feature that enhances the game’s accessibility and depth. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a user-friendly introduction to golf gaming or an expert chasing the thrill of a perfectly executed swing, this mechanic offers a novel and engaging way to experience golf simulation. The community’s input and developers’ insights have honed the 3-Click Swing into a beloved feature that respects the traditions of the sport while embracing the future of gaming. As you gear up for your next round in PGA TOUR 2K23, consider the 3-Click Swing as your go-to choice for precision, control, and an ultra-realistic golfing experience. Embrace these PGA 2K23 swing mechanics, explore the game controls, and immerse yourself in the most lifelike virtual golf gameplay yet. And remember, whether you’re looking for PGA 2K23 gameplay tips or strategies, the 3-Click Swing is your key to unlocking a new level of play on the digital green.

How to Improve Your Player Fast in PGA Tour 2K23

Enzo Zalamea

There are only a few ways you can improve your player in PGA Tour 2K23 because most of the gameplay relies on your mechanical skills and knowledge of the game.

You can have all the best skills, perks, clubs, shafts, and balls, but you still have to make the right decisions and hit all the perfect timings on the fairway.

For this post, we’ll show you how to improve your player fast in PGA Tour 2K23, whether it is through skills, clubs, technique, and everything in between.

Ways to Improve Your Player

Choosing the right archetype for your playstyle is one way of improving your player.

Greensman – strong putting skills, but weak with recovery shots

Powerhouse – strong driving distance, but weak with timing/accuracy

Rhythm – strong with timing or accuracy, but weak with driving distance

Sculptor – strong with shot shaping, but weak with distance control

Woodsman – strong on recovery shots, but weak with putting skills

Every archetype gives a different playstyle for your player. The only noticeably weak archetype here would be the Woodsman.

You don’t need to be strong on recovery shots if you always find the green or the fairway. Since it also puts a damper on your putting skills, the archetype is horrible.

Apply Fitting

In the main menu screen, you can go to “MyPlayer” and press the “Locker” icon. From here, you can see four different tabs – Golf Bag, Collection, Fittings, and Apparel.

Under Golf Bag, Collection, or Fittings, you can equip a head, shaft, and grip on your clubs. Each club can be fit with one head, shaft, and grip. All of these fittings have different rarities and stats.

The higher the rarity, the better the boost. However, you would want to choose stats that can be beneficial to you.

Driver Fitting

For example, if you are using a Powerhouse archetype, you would have some slight problems with swing difficulties. You can compensate for that specific weakness by adding swing path and timing bonuses.

In a way, it would pretty much be the same if you are using a Rhythm archetype and you are adding fittings that increase your power.

However, it is important that you can increase your drive distance, as finishing 5-par holes will always give you a chance for an eagle. If you can carry upwards of 310 yards on your driver, you can make the green with two strokes and go for the eagle.

You can have custom clubs with fittings that are built specifically for accuracy and timing, while other clubs are built to carry more power.

For example, you can add more timing and swing path to your 6-iron while adding more power to your 5-iron. You can have better recoveries on the rough with the 5-iron, and you can use the 6-iron for more accuracy.

You can even opt for using a bigger club if that club has more timing and swing path fittings. You can just reduce the power on the swing.

Fit Fee

It is also worth noting that equipping fittings on your clubs will have a fit fee. The higher the rarity, the higher the cost.

You can replace the fitting any time you want, but it will cost you coins every time you switch. The fittings do not disappear if you change them.

Skills add a lot of bonuses to your player. These skills are categorized by clubs. Each club has its own skill tree, and they will all have separate bonuses.

It is best to focus your skill points on clubs that are used the most. These are the putter, irons, driver, and wedge.

Most of the good skills take a while to unlock because you need to allocate skill points before unlocking the next tiers. On the bright side, you can unlock the best skills for a club even if you allocate some of your early skill points to the other clubs.

How to Unlock Fittings

To unlock fittings, you can get them through leveling reward bonuses, rivalry challenges, winning events, and sponsorships.

All of them are tied to just playing the game, performing well, and winning. However, when you get sponsorships , you can choose the brand that can give you rare or epic fittings.

How to Gain More Skill Points

To earn skill points, you need to level your player. Each level gives you one skill point, and the maximum number of SP is 50.

There are 126 skill points needed to allocate all the skills in the game, so you need to choose your skill points wisely. You can reset all your skill points, but it will cost you 500 coins.

Final Thoughts

All of the things mentioned are ways you can improve your player, but most of the improvements need to come from decision-making and mechanical skills.

The best tip to improve your play is to notice everything involved that can alter your shot accuracy.

Things like wind, shot timing, terrain, lie, swing path, shot types, spins, loft, and everything in between need to be noticed. Learning how to spin the ball can save you a lot of points.

Pokemon Leak Gives Insight on Generation 10 Release Plans

Assassin’s creed shadows already has gamers angry, spyro 4 gets big tease.

Finally, after two years of work, PGA Tour 2K23 is here, with two deluxe digital versions debuting on October 11 and the regular console releases hitting stores on October 14. Much like with their WWE franchise, 2K decided to take a year off making PGA Tour games to ensure that the next game would be better quality. Clearly, the staff at HB Studios haven't been slacking off since the release of PGA Tour 2K21 , as the Canadian studio has added a slew of additional options, from shot types to game modes, to their golf video game franchise.

RELATED: Great Sports Games That Offer Fun Over Realism

Even compared to the previous game in the series, it's impossible to argue that this isn't the best golf game in terms of gameplay. Improvements to the user interface and loading speeds in the Course Designer make it better than ever, and the new MyPlayer archetypes enable the player to tailor their game to their skills and limitations (especially on Xbox Series X). Considering how much simpler it is to pick up and play PGA Tour 2K23 with the 3-Click Swing (which will be discussed later), games like Mario Golf: Super Rush are rendered mostly obsolete.

5 Use Virtual Currency To Upgrade Clubs

Even though virtual currency (VC) isn't as pervasive and game-breaking as it is in NBA 2K games , it's already getting there. Within the game, the cool new cosmetics that a player can get are especially the ones they pay for (and the new season pass levels up painfully slowly if the player doesn't buy the premium track).

The most striking element of VC is its use in upgrading equipment. The gamer can't simply purchase great clubs and stats. It's not the same as it is in NBA 2K , where the player can essentially buy their way to the top of the game. However, players should consider giving their clubs a modest statistical advantage by investing in superior fittings.

4 Include Backspin In Your Arsenal

Backspin, as the name suggests, is a type of spin that players can use to make the ball go backward. This may be accomplished with either an overhand or an underhand stroke.

RELATED: Most Immersive Sports Games Of All Time, Ranked

There are several reasons why using Backspin is critical . Backspin may be used to get the ball to stop swiftly on the green, which is important for making eagle and birdie putts. It may also cause the ball to travel a shorter distance, which is useful when shooting against the wind. Additionally, Backspin may cause the ball to bend further, which can aid in avoiding trees and other objects.

3 Check Statistics

Examining statistics in PGA Tour 2K23 isn't a simple process, but players should always know how to check this data whenever they're curious about a specific detail .

After the player has launched the game, they should access the main menu on their Xbox, PlayStation, or PC and hit the Menu button on their controller. Thereafter, the Options Menu will appear. If they hit RT or R2, they'll get the statistics panel. After clicking on Statistics & Records, they will be able to examine their profile's history, records, and statistics.

2 Experience The Game With Topgolf

Topgolf is a natural fit as a partner for PGA Tour 2K23 , and the mode it adds is great for social play and getting used to various clubs with pals. The game can be played on a Topgolf range, which is a driving range with targets; the more away the targets, the higher the gamer's score. However, the game will also ask the player to hit certain targets for additional points.

RELATED: 2K Versus EA: Who Makes Better Sports Games?

The Topgolf mode in PGA Tour 2K23 is the most realistic representation of the sport available. Play against other people in one of 80 physical venues all designed to seem like the original Las Vegas venue. In a round of golf , the gamer will get 10 shots at various objectives throughout the course. It's important to note, however, that not all grades are created equal. Furthermore, the points are awarded depending on the target's closeness to the point's base as well as the distance.

1 Master The New Swing System

One of the most significant additions in PGA Tour 2K23 is the new swing system . Those who prefer the classic analog swing stick will be able to stick with it, but the game will also have the option of a new 3-click swing system. According to the developers at HB Studios, this new feature is much more precise.

Using the new system, players will be able to hold down X (on PlayStation) or A (if the player is on Xbox) and time its release close to the power circle. Then, press the button to determine the swing path. Finally, press it again to determine whether it will be an open or a closed clubface. Practice makes perfect, so players should set aside some to improve their technique.

PGA Tour 2K23 is available now on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

PGA Tour 2K23: Beginner’s guide to driving & shooting – Controls, tips, and more

Image of Chris Studley

It’s a new time for the PGA Tour 2K franchise, as PGA Tour 2K23 has gone live worldwide. This new title brings back a lot of features for 2K21, but that information might mean much to newcomers. Much like with PGA Tour 2K21, 2K23’s gameplay can be a bit trepidatious to navigate around at first. If you’re new to the franchise and want on improving your driving/shooting game, we can help. Let’s go some info newcomers to golf in general should know, as well as relevant controls and tips on how to drive and shoot better.

What to know about golf

Before you get to the green, you’ll need to drive the ball off the tee and begin the play. In most cases, players will need a driver in order to start the round. However, there will be instances where you will instead start with either a Wood or an Iron. The latter two come in handy on drivers for par-3 and short par-4s.

Drivers yield the most distance in PGA Tour 2K23, followed by Woods. Hybrid, Iron, and Wedges have shorter distances, and are used in short distances towards the greens, as well as to get out of bunkers and the rough.

The directions

For PGA Tour 2K23, there are three different ways to shoot: the Left Stick, the Right Stick, and a 3-Point system using the buttons. Let’s go over the last one first.

The 3-Point system uses a meter that looks significantly different than the other two. To start the meter, press and hold A/X, and then let go once the meter covers all of the white space. Then, you’ll see two hands show up on the meter. It will look awfully similar to a clock, and the hands move counter-clockwise.

pga tour 2k23 hitting tips

To stop the first hand, press A/X. The first hand, which handles the direction of the shot, needs to be either on, or right near the small white space on the top-part of the meter. The second hand also must be stopped with A/X, and it also needs to land on the white space that falls on the bottom of the meter. This latter part affects the distance of the shot.

Now, let’s go over the analog stick method. To enter your backswing, shift and hold the stick down. To move to your downswing, which will be when you actually hit the golf ball, shift the stick up once you have finished with the backswing. However, you have to push the stick straight up in order for the ball to go in the correct direction. If you don’t, the shot could veer to the left or the right.

Now, let’s go over some tips for how to improve your game in PGA Tour 2K23:

It might be best to turn off Swing Timing…at first

If you plan using the sticks to shoot, it might be best to turn off the Swing Timing at first. You will need to have Swing Timing to play on, but there is somewhat of a benefit of turning it off for newcomers: it can help with working with those stick skills. Instead of focusing on worrying about the timing and how fast or slow you move with the stick, this will allow you to first work on keeping shots straight.

Try calibration

Before you do anything in PGA Tour 2K23, spend time in Practice mode. Not only will you be able to mess around and get a good feel for the controls, but players can also calibrate their swing. Calibrating your swing will give you a better idea as to how you should time your swing, but it will also let the game calibrate perfect downswing timing based upon your shot. We’ll get more into why that’s important in a bit.

Shape the shot

If you want to improve your game, it’s vital that you use the shot shaping capabilities. There are a number of different ways to shape a shot.

pga tour 2k23 hitting tips

For starters, players can add more top or backspin by shifting the left or right stick — depending on shot method — up or down. Shifting down will add more backspin, whereas moving it up adds topspin. Backspin is actually pretty important, as it adds distance to a shot, but also makes it easier to stop a ball right at the landing spot.

The other stick controls the loft of the shot. If you move the non-shooting stick up, it will lead to a lower loft and lead to the ball flying lower. Move it down, and it leads to a higher loft and a higher flight path. Keep in mind that higher lofts reduce carry distance, and increase the impact wind can have on a shot. Lower lofts have the opposite effect: those lead to a reduced distance.

Practice, practice, practice

PGA Tour 2K23 features a lot of different courses, and can be tough to get the hang of at first. Good form requires practice, especially for quirky courses. MyCareer is a great way to get your feet wet, and can also help with getting some free rewards and money .

Note: There are reports circulating that the calibration for Xbox consoles are not working properly, as of this writing. Keep that in mind.

PGA Tour 2k23 club fittings

How to Make the Most of Club Fittings in PGA Tour 2K23

Image of Kevin Scott

Just as with real golf, it can take some time to find your shot in PGA Tour 2K23 . You’re bound to duff drives, shank irons, and hook wedges all over courses while you attempt to figure out the ideal tempo to keep shots straight.

If you want to avoid the roughs, bunkers, and water hazards that are eagerly waiting to gobble up errant shots, you’ll want to make sure that the clubs in your golf bag have been properly fitted to best assist you when out on the course. You’ll begin to collect fittings as you play rounds in the game, receiving them as rewards when you finish up your final hole.

The fittings are how to get the most out of the various club types (driver, wood, hybrid, iron, wedge, and putter) by maximizing particular attributes of theirs. Most clubs have six different attributes that you’re able to target with fittings: power, timing, swing path, transition, shaping, and lie range. However, putters only have two, putt weight and putt path.

Fittings also appear in five distinct colors depending on their effectiveness. In order of those with the greatest power to alter your clubs to the least, these are red, purple, blue, green, and grey. They have all been individually balanced though to come with pros and cons, meaning even the red fittings can boost certain parts of your game while decreasing others.

pga tour 2k23 hitting tips

When you start out, it can be a little confusing to know exactly what to do with the fittings that you begin to accrue. It only gets more complicated strategically as your number of fittings grows and you have to consider which ones will give you the greatest advantage. To help you in your quest for the perfect swing with every club, here are some tips to bear in mind as you wade through the wonderful world of fittings in PGA Tour 2K23 .

Lean On Your Strengths

This is a good time to mention that so much of how you’ll want to use your fittings will depend on what kind of archetype you’ve chosen to use. For instance, if you’re someone who likes to slam the ball as far as possible by employing the powerhouse archetype, you might want to also outfit your clubs (or at least your driver) with power fittings. This will ensure that few will be able to hit the ball farther off the tee and will give you less distance on approaches, which will come in especially handy on those shorter par 5s.

Similarly, if you’re someone who prefers the rhythm archetype for its focus on improving timing, you’re likely to gravitate to the timing fittings should you want to limit the instances that you miss the mark with shots. Just be sure to pay attention to any attributes of your clubs that you’ve raised all the way to 100 because you could be better served using your fittings elsewhere once you’ve maxed out.

Hide Your Weaknesses

Rather than using the fittings to enhance aspects of your game that are already fairly strong, you could try instead to achieve balance by using them to compensate for your weaknesses. With this strategy, someone using the rhythm archetype might want to add some power fittings to their clubs to avoid losing too much in distance against opponents. A powerhouse archetype could probably stand to straighten out their bombs some with a few timing or transition fittings.

Do you struggle hitting out of the rough? Look to add lie range fittings to remedy that. These weaknesses shouldn’t just be limited to ones accompanying the archetypes either. If you find it hard to achieve a consistently good tempo in general because of your stick skills (or lack thereof), it’s only going to be easier if you max out the timing on your clubs.

pga tour 2k23 hitting tips

While it may seem like a smart idea to plan out your fittings meticulously, your plans can always go awry once you hit the course. That’s when you can always bring out the reliable trial-and-error method to find a combination of fittings that works. There’s no arguing with results and if you find an array of fittings that’s perfect for you, even if that’s only a placebo of sorts, it’s best to stick with that until it starts faltering. You’ll be surprised to find that sometimes a red fitting doesn’t have the impact you might expect while a purple fitting will get the job done better for you with a certain type of club.

Don’t be chaotic in your experiments though and go in with some sort of problem you’re looking to solve, especially since fitting a whole group of clubs like irons in your bag can get awfully expensive.

An interesting wrinkle to fitting your clubs is that the game gives you the opportunity to fit single clubs rather than an entire group of clubs. While you’ll usually probably want to keep your fittings uniform across a club group, there are times when there could be an upside to having a club or two with different fittings than the others. Perhaps you want to have your longer irons fitted with more power while you prefer the shorter irons to be focused on timing so you can dial in your approaches. Or maybe you have certain wedges that you’d like to use from the rough so you apply lie range fittings to help you make those clubs slightly more adaptable.

Trade In Lesser Fittings

A neat feature that PGA Tour 2K23 utilizes is allowing you to trade in fittings that you don’t need for better options. By trading in three fittings, you can choose a specific fitting of the same quality (purple to purple, for example) that might serve you better in any of the club types. This can come in handy when you have an abundance of quality fittings of one type or club group but are lacking in other parts of your bag. You also have the ability to trade in three fittings of one quality for a random fitting one tier better (purple to red, for example). As you start to acquire those premium red fittings on all your clubs, this exchange will be valuable to turn all your lesser fittings into other red options that might improve your game slightly.

PGA TOUR 2K23

HOW TO PUTT IN PGA TOUR 2K23

Just like in real life, your ability to putt consistently will be critical to your performance on PGA TOUR 2K23. While every golfer fantasizes about sinking that Hollywood 50-foot shot straight into the hole, these types of shots are a rarity for all but the sport’s most elite players.

With wayward approach shots likely to land anywhere from the rough to bunkers and watering holes, every golfer is thrilled to see their shot land firmly on the green. There are many ways a golfer can approach putting, but a successful first putt should be accurate enough to drop in the hole, or set you up for a short-range second putt.

While the concept is simple enough, mastering the art of consistent putting is easier said than done. This is why we’ve put together this detailed guide on how to putt and the best strategy to ensure you’re perfectly placed for an under-par hole.

TRAINING AREA

PGA TOUR 2K23 Training Area

The best place to perfect the art of putting is in the training area. You can access the training area from the main menu by selecting Casual → Training → Practice → Putting Practice. From here, you’ll be taken to a practice putting green with numerous holes at varying distances.

As soon as you enter the putting green, you can begin practicing immediately. The place ball function allows you to place the ball anywhere on the course and hone your skills from a variety of distances and angles. Press the button for the on-screen "Help" panel in the lower right to display the additional controls available while in Practice.

We recommend practicing your short-range putting at first to learn the fundamentals before moving on to the more advanced shots. Once you feel comfortable with your short-range putting, begin practicing your medium-range shots before advancing to the more challenging long-range putts.

If you have certain HUD and info assists enabled, your screen on the practice green may be filled with useful information designed to help you perfect your putting. The key elements to follow on the screen depend on whether you use the 3-Click Swing or the Standard Swing. For the former, you’ll need to press and hold for a timed release. Let go to set the power and press the button again to set the accuracy. For the latter, pay attention to the distance control meter, swing plane, and the green grid, which we’ll get into further down.

By following the information in these tools, you’ll begin to develop a better feel for your putting, which will enhance your performance when you play the game competitively.

READING THE GREEN

PGA TOUR 2K23 Reading the Green

As with real-life golf, the best approach to your stroke on PGA TOUR 2K23 can depend on an array of factors. From your distance to the hole, there are myriad variables that can alter your approach to a putt.

One of the first things you’ll likely notice on the putting area is the square grid across the surface of the green. With its moving beads, this grid lets us know if any slopes could alter the ball's path.

The directions and speed of the beads tell us the direction in which the green is sloping and by how much. The grid turns yellow on slightly steeper inclines and red on the steepest areas.

Uneven terrain on certain areas of the course can result in the travel of the ball changing mid-putt and either slowing down, speeding up, or breaking left or right. It’s this unpredictability that makes learning to read the green so essential.

By understanding the variables at play in the most tricky places of the course, you’ll be able to modify your approach accordingly and ensure your putting remains at the top of its game.

If the beads move from right to left, the ball will break left. Contrastingly, if they move from left to right, then the ball will break right. This knowledge is essential when planning your shots effectively. For example, if the green indicates a steep left break, you’ll need to set the direction marker up to a few feet right of the hole to counteract this.

PRACTICE SWING

A good putting motion is one of the most overlooked yet pivotal elements of your performance on the golf course. This notion is equally important in the ultra-realistic world of PGA TOUR 2K23, where the quality of your stroke is key to glory on the green.

By pressing the C button on a PC, or by clicking the Swing Stick on a console, you will toggle between normal or Practice Swing modes.

When Practice Swing is turned on, the ball will disappear. This will allow you to practice your putting stroke for as long as you like without the fear of inadvertently hitting the ball. Taking some time to practice your stroke can bring huge benefits to your putting when it's time to play competitively.

Following the recommended power on the Distance Control Meter at the bottom of your screen is an excellent way to gain a better feel for the types of shots required for various places on the green. Pull back on the Swing Stick, or initiate the 3-Click Swing if that’s your preference, until you reach the suggested power percentage.

Keep practicing until you’re regularly reaching the correct amount of power for each stroke. Once you’re ready, toggle off Practice Swing and take your shot.

PUTT PREVIEW

PGA TOUR 2K23 Putt Preview

Putt preview is one of the most effective tools to help reduce your strokes on the course. By selecting this feature, you’ll be given a white putt line that lets you preview the path the ball is going to take. Keep in mind that you are only permitted one Putt Preview per stroke. We recommend setting up your putt as best you can before using the Putt Preview. Then make adjustments to your read based on your initial aim.

This feature can have a profound effect on your playing style and is perfect for learning the vital fine margins required to navigate those unpredictable last-minute direction and pace changes that can derail your performance on that all-important hole.

Depending on your difficulty setting, you may be given a maximum number of putt previews for the round, or none at all; such as in the Pro difficulty used during Matchmaking.

TAKING YOUR SHOT

Putting in PGA TOUR 2K23 uses similar controls and mechanics to other shots like drives but requires less power and aggression. When it comes to putting, the new 3-Click Swing requires you to use a timed button hold and release to set power, and a timed button press to set accuracy.

The game will provide you with two distance markers; one showing you the direction to the hole and the other highlighting the direction and target distance & elevation of your prospective putt. Moving your control up, down, left, or right will change the movement of the second marker to reflect the changes in the direction and speed of your shot based on your new position.

Remember, both the speed and slope of the green and the direction and power of your shot play a part in where the ball ends up. Thankfully, your ability to read the green and adapt your shots for all eventualities will only improve the more you practice.

In many instances, placing a marker a few feet away from the hole can be an effective way to ensure your ball remains on target.

TAKE A LESSON

For those who are brand new to putting and PGA TOUR 2K23, the inbuilt lessons can be an excellent starting point for learning the ropes. These lessons will give you a comprehensive overview of taking your first putts, with clear instructions that will provide you with the foundations required to hit the ground running.

To take a putting tutorial, head over to the main menu and select Casual → Training → Lessons → Putting. There are also valuable tutorials in this area on swing basics, shot types, and clubs to provide you with a rounded understanding that will help you develop your game quickly.

MEASURE YOUR PROGRESS

You can measure both your progress and performance to date in our Statistics and Records section. This section can be accessed in the Stats tab of the Profile menu. Here, you will find all the stats relating to all the shots you have taken to date.

While there are numerous stats in this section, it's the Putting Accuracy fields that will provide you with the most valuable information on the performance of your putting so far.

Aside from putting, Statistics and Records is an excellent place to see your overall improvement in the game. As well as putting statistics, this section also identifies the main shots you need to work on while showing the success to date of each shot using percentage points.

TOP PUTTING TIPS

  • Keep the green speed in mind when adjusting your putt.
  • Read the green grid beads to judge the break.
  • Factor in up- and down-hill elevation into your distance, and break.
  • Play it safe when it’s risky to roll past the pin; just get it close!
  • When in doubt, the default power may get you close enough for a tap-in.
  • Use Putt Preview when available, adjust if necessary.
  • Lock-in your putting stroke with Practice Swing
  • Maintain composure, make the putt!
  • Make use of the PGA TOUR 2K23 stats, guides, and recommendations.

The best advice we can provide above all else, however, is to practice as much as possible until you’ve mastered the art of putting. The best PGA Tour 2k23 beginner’s tips

Here all of our favorite beginner’s tips on how to rapidly improve your golfing skills in PGA Tour 2k23.

Choosing the Right Difficulty

When you first start the game, it is crucial to select the right difficulty level for you. Overall, we would recommend that you start on the “Pro” difficulty. This level provides a balanced challenge, without being overwhelming for beginners. Naturally, you might think lower difficulties may be better if you don’t know much about golfing, but in the long run they won’t make you better at the game. Trust us, with the “Pro” setting, you will have more control over your shots and improve your skills effectively.

Take care of your tempo and swing

Two key aspects to focus on in PGA Tour 2K 23 are tempo and swing plane. Tempo refers to the timing and rhythm of your swing, while swing plane refers to exactly how straight you manage to pull back and then push forward with your club (or gamepad stick, in our case). These factors influence the accuracy and distance of your shots. It is crucial to practice and improve your tempo and swing plane a lot, if you are looking to become a skilled golfer.

Use the Training Facility

The training facility in the game is your best friend when it comes to improving your skills. Here, you can fine-tune your tempo and swing plane by hitting shots in a controlled environment, with no rush and no one to yell at you (hopefully). But let’s see what you can do to improve those shots

Tips for practising your shots

  • Find the right tempo for you. Experiment with different grips and thumb placements on the controller to find what feels most comfortable and allows you to swing straight.
  • Once established the grip and swing mechanics, practice hitting shots with most of the clubs that you will have at your disposal. Pay attention to shot shaping, which allows you to control the trajectory of your shots.
  • Utilize the different shot types available, such as pitch and flop shots. They will help you develop a diverse range of skills and improve your ability to adapt to various situations on the course.
  • Experiment with different distances and elevation changes as well, as they will further improve your distance control. By practising shots with different power and loft settings, you will become more proficient at hitting the ball accurately to your desired target.
  • Take advantage of the putting range to work on your putting skills. Focus on developing a consistent swing path and getting the right power for each putt. Also, take care of your spin and distance control to improve your accuracy on the green.

Consistent practice is the key to success

Improving your skills in PGA Tour 2K 23 requires consistent practice. Muscle memory takes time to develop, and you need to hit thousands of shots to refine your swing mechanics and improve your overall gameplay. Dedicate time each day to practice in the training facility and on the course to see significant progress.

PGA Tour 2K 23 is a challenging and immersive golf game that can provide hours of entertainment and skill development. By following the tips and strategies outlined in this beginner’s guide, you will be well on your way to becoming a skilled player. US PGA Championship tips 2024: Five players I’m backing to win at Valhalla this week

Rory mcilroy looks like the man to beat after a stunning fortnight - but the return of world no 1 scottie scheffler could make his life difficult.

DeChambeau, McIlroy and Aberg are all contenders this week (Photo: Getty)

The appearance of Tiger Woods in only his second event of the year is arguably more relevant in the political context than the sporting given his role in fixing the ruction at the heart of golf , though a win for him at this week’s PGA Championship would inevitably transform the narrative.

However, it is at the negotiating table in Valhalla that Woods’ influence is most likely to be felt and where it is most needed. Golf cannot prosper in its present, divided state.

This is just the second of four weeks in the calendar when the best face the best. The public is voting with its feet. Sponsors are anxious. The game needs its heroes to compete against each other for 12 months of the year not one.

Doubtless the PGA Championship will demonstrate why, throwing up a winner worthy of one of golf’s great championships.

Here are five candidates to emerge triumphant from the strongest field of the year.

Rory McIlroy

The invisible man behind Tiger Woods’ throne who is shaping the future of golf

The invisible man behind Tiger Woods' throne who is shaping the future of golf

It’s been a while since McIlroy entered a major powered by a sense of destiny unfolding. News of his split from wife Erica, divorce papers filed only on Monday, adds a layer of complexity to his week, but in this regard he has history.

McIlroy’s split from tennis player Caroline Wozniacki caused an even bigger stir a decade ago in the week of the BMW Championship, yet he walked through the storm to win the European Tour’s signature event. Fuelled by successive victories he arrives here with his tail up, ordinarily a scary prospect for his rivals.

Scottie Scheffler

Another negotiating a big life moment. Scheffler welcomed into the world his first child, son Bennett, a week ago. He was, of course, already the daddy of the fairways, his victory at the Masters a month ago making it three wins in four tournaments.

Had he not missed from five feet to take the Houston Open to a play-off a fortnight prior, it might have been four in a row. When McIlroy went successive rounds without a bogey en route to victory at Quail Hollow last week, he said he knew what it felt like to be Scheffler, which is a measure of the world No 1’s hold over the game.

Ludvig Aberg

The reason why Scottie Scheffler will never be the next Tiger Woods

The reason why Scottie Scheffler will never be the next Tiger Woods

You know when a player has entered the divine circle in golf when he is universally addressed by his given name. This has little to do with the difficulty of pronouncing correctly a Swedish surname that troubles the English ear.

Aberg is one big finish from entering the world’s top five less than a year since turning pro. Already a two-time winner, Aberg finished second to Scheffler at his first major championship last month at Augusta. After withdrawing from Quail Hollow to heal a knee issue, the long-hitting Swede declared himself ready to continue his incredible rise.

Tommy Fleetwood

Golf’s most likeable player is one good week from burnishing his reputation with a trophy befitting his popularity. Fleetwood is a constant presence on leaderboards, flitting across our screens when the cameras cut away from the leading group to record the moment he mails one in from 30 feet.

Getting the putts to drop has been the only issue for a golfer of unremitting consistency tee to green. Only Scheffler strikes a ball better than our Tommy, whose swing has become the go-to guide for improvers on YouTube.

Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau on his drastic weight loss: ‘I was at high risk of heart attack the way I was going’

Bryson DeChambeau on his drastic weight loss: 'I was at high risk of heart attack'

DeChambeau reminded the game of his enormous value when topping the Masters leaderboard. He would eventually wilt under the weight of Scheffler’s remorseless march yet did enough over those first two days to convince himself he is close to his best after scaling back his power game .

DeChambeau is still monster long, which will be an even bigger advantage on a course softened by pre-tournament rains. A win for DeChambeau, a LIV Golf advocate for a deal with the PGA Tour, might also focus minds around the stalled negotiating table.

2024 PGA Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

L ouisville will be the center of the golf world this week with the 2024 PGA Championship in town for the 2nd major of the year. Valhalla Golf Club is hosting this storied event for 2nd time in 10 years. In 2014 Rory McIlroy won it to claim his 3rd major championship. The 1st round tees off on Thursday morning from Kentucky.

Below, we look at BetMGM Sportsbook's 2024 PGA Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

World No. 1  Scottie Scheffler hasn't played since winning the RBC Heritage the week after winning the Masters, but he'll be back in the field this week following the birth of his 1st child and in search of his 2nd straight major title. He's the betting favorite again at +450, followed by McIlroy (+750) and Xander Schauffele (+1400), who dueled on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship. Reigning PGA Champion Brooks Koepka is at +1600 in his quest for a 4th Wanamaker Trophy.

The field also includes 4-time PGA Championship winner Tiger Woods , who opens at +15000 to win. Woods finished 60th at the Masters (+16).

Valhalla Golf Club is yet another long PGA Championship course, coming in at 7,609 yards. It's a par 71, making it an even more challenging track at that length. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986 and this is the 4th time it is hosting a PGA Championship (1986, 2000, 2014). Hitting the fairway is critical because of how lush the rough is, penalizing players for missing with errant tee shots.

PGA Championship – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 2:32 p.m. ET.

Brooks Koepka (+1600)

Koepka is a big-game hunter and the PGA Championship is his specialty. He's won this event 3 times already, claiming the title in 2018, 2019 and 2023. He finished 2nd in 2021 at Kiawah, too, behind only Phil Mickelson . Koepka did not have a good week at the Masters (T-49, +9), but he's since gotten back on track, finishing 10th in Adelaide and winning in Singapore, his last 2 LIV starts. With a U.S. Open-type layout, Koepka has the ability to grind through 4 rounds better than most players.

Ludvig Aberg (+1800)

Aberg withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship last week due to a knee injury, but that seems to be more of a precaution than a serious ailment for the 24-year-old star. In his 1st career major start at the Masters in April, he finished 2nd, showing that no stage is too big for him. He has the all-around game to win a PGA Championship, too, being one of the best drivers and long-iron players in the world.

Rory McIlroy (+750)

This number was a bit higher before McIlroy won in convincing fashion at Quail Hollow on Sunday, but he's still worth betting at +750. He's now won in back-to-back starts and heads to Valhalla where he won the 2014 PGA Championship. With the Masters pressure behind him, he can play more freely in Louisville this week knowing this event doesn't come with the burden of attempting to complete the grand slam.

PGA Championship picks – Contenders

Will zalatoris (+6000).

In Zalatoris' last 5 starts at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open, he's finished 6th, 8th, MC, 2nd and 2nd. Few players in the world have had better recent success in those 2 major championships than Zalatoris, and it's largely because the best ball-strikers rise to the top in these events. He's a great bet for any PGA Championship, especially at +6000. That number is much longer than you'd expect from his major history.

Cameron Smith (+4000)

The biggest concern with Smith is his driving accuracy. He can get a bit wild off the tee, which at a course like Valhalla can be particularly penalizing. But if he can manage to keep it in the short grass, he'll be peppering these greens to give himself good looks at birdies. And when he misses the green, he has an excellent short game to scramble and recover for pars. He's finished 13th and 9th in his last 2 PGA Championship starts.

Jason Day (+5500)

Day is a past PGA Champion, winning in 2015 at Whistling Straits. He struggled in this championship in recent years but he has 6 career top-10s in the PGA Championship. Day is playing well at the moment, fresh off a T-4 at the Wells Fargo Championship last week, a good test before the year's 2nd major.

PGA Championship picks – Long shots

Jake knapp (+17500).

Knapp has all the talent in the world, but he can be inconsistent, particularly with his driver. When the timing of his swing is off, he tends to have a bad left miss off the tee, which has hurt him in recent months. But as we saw at the Mexico Open and Cognizant Classic in back-to-back weeks when he finished 1st and 4th, he's a star when the swing is timed up properly. He has the length to conquer Valhalla, too.

Alex Noren (+12500)

It's been 3 months since Noren finished worse than 24th in any event. He's on a heater right now and while that may not translate to a major win (he has zero career PGA Tour victories), he's worth considering at this price. Noren ranks 8th on tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green so his ball-striking is fantastic.

Cam Davis (+15000)

Davis was having a good week in Charlotte until he shot 6-over in the final round to tumble down the leaderboard, all the way to T-38. He surprised a lot of people when he came in 3rd at the 2023 PGA Championship and he's now made the cut in 3 straight years at this major.

2024 PGA Championship odds, picks, field, predictions: Golf insider backing Brooks Koepka at Valhalla

Sia nejad reveals his pga championship 2024 picks, props and sleepers for valhalla golf club following rory mcilroy's win at the wells fargo championship.

pga tour 2k23 hitting tips

Only one of the last 12 editions of the PGA Championship has gone into a playoff, but that hasn't taken away from the dramatics of the 18th hole on Sunday. Brooks Koepka won last year's PGA Championship after withstanding a Sunday comeback effort from Scottie Scheffler, who shot a 5-under-par in the final round. Justin Thomas defeated Will Zalatoris in a playoff in 2022 and Phil Mickelson won the 2021 PGA Championship despite shooting a 1-over-par in his final round. Each of these three previous winners will be in another stacked 2024 PGA Championship field with the second major of the year teeing off on Thursday from Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.

Scheffler is the 3-1 favorite in the 2024 PGA Championship odds, followed by Rory McIlroy (6-1) and Koepka (10-1). The 24-year-old Ludvig Aberg finished second at the Masters in his first career major and at 12-1 odds to win the PGA Championship 2024, is he someone to use in 2024 PGA Championship betting strategy? Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks, make sure you see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 43-28-3 and returning 11.24 units over that span. That's a $1,124 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023.

Nejad also nailed Clark, a 75-1 longshot, as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2024 PGA Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2024 PGA Championship expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading Xander Schauffele, even though he's fourth in the 2024 PGA Championship odds. Schauffele is considered one of the best active golfers who has still not won a major title, with his best finishes being T2 at the 2018 Open Championship and T2 at the 2019 Masters. This has been one of his worst majors though, as he has never finished better than T10 in seven attempts.

Schauffele missed the cut in 2021, finished T13 in 2022 and T18 last year. He ranks outside the top 30 on the PGA Tour in driving distance, driving accuracy and proximity, which will put him at a disadvantage against some of the golfers in this field. Nejad knows Schauffele has the tools to contend, but his poor history at the end of majors makes him a golfer to avoid this week.

Instead, Nejad is high on the chances of Brooks Koepka, even though he's a double-digit longshot at 10-1. Koepka is coming off a victory in his latest tournament, winning in Singapore on May 5. Koepka, a three-time PGA Champion, is a five-time major winner and has six top-five finishes over his last nine PGA Championship events. The PGA Championship has been Koepka's most consistent major and despite finishing 45th at the Masters, Nejad sees Koepka as a strong option for 2024 PGA Championship bets.

Koepka finished 15th at the last PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, but that was 10 years ago. The 2014 PGA Championship was only his fourth major as the young golfer was still adjusting to becoming a professional at that stage. He is looking to tie Tiger Woods for the second-most PGA Championship victories, which would place him one behind Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen (five) for the most all-time. Koepka has put together a strong tournament already this month and Nejad expects that to continue into the 2024 PGA Championship.  See who else to back at SportsLine .

2024 PGA Championship highlights: Xander Schauffele leads with 62

The first round of the 2024 PGA Championship is over at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, with Xander Schauffele off to a great start as he seeks his first major championship.

Schauffele shot a 62 (nine birdies, no bogeys) on Thursday, tying a record he shares with two others for best round at a major. He holds a three-shot lead on Tony Finau, Saheeth Theegala and Mark Hubbard.

Scottie Scheffler , who entered the tournament as the No. 1 player in the world and won the year’s first major championship at the Masters, shot a 4-under 67 and is tied for 12th place.

Tiger Woods teed off early in the morning and shot a 1-over.

USA TODAY Sports provided updates throughout the day. Here's how the first round went:

Mark Hubbard climbs to second place

Mark Hubbard put up a fantastic ending to the day as he jumped to second place after finishing the first round at 6-under-par.

Hubbard birdied three of the last four holes, and the late push began with a 30-foot putt on the par-4 15th. He doesn't have a PGA Tour win, but he ends the day just three shots back of the leader and he's tied with Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala.

First round on pace to break PGA Championship history

It’s been a great day to golf at Valhalla Golf Club, so great that the tournament record is set to be broken.

With the first round nearly wrapped up, 66 golfers are under par, which would be the most in PGA Championship history. The previous record was 60 in 2006 at Medinah.

Several players have noted the grass has been very soft and has played a factor in the low scores. A majority of the the players at the top of the leaderboard teed off in the morning.

Late golfers making some noise

Most of the crowd has left Valhalla Golf Club with the sun setting soon, but those still on the course are playing some good golf.

Mark Hubbard and Maverick McNealy are part of the third-to-last group to tee off Thursday, but they are both shooting well as they get close to wrapping up the day. Both are 4-under-par.

Scottie Scheffler wraps up first round

The top player in the world had a great first round in Louisville, finishing the day at 4-under-par and in a tie for 10th place.

Scheffler had a perfect start to the day with an eagle on No. 1, and he’s been able to overcome a couple of bogeys to be one of several players with low scores. He’s been on fire this year with four tour wins, including the 2024 Masters, and he remains in the hunt for another major championship this weekend.

Afternoon golfers climb leaderboards

No one has been able to get near Xander Schauffele’s incredible first round, but those who teed off in the afternoon are making progress.

All eyes have been on world No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler, and he’s played a steady first round at 4-under-par through 16. But some lesser known golfers had impressive days that were nearly free of mistakes. Tom Kim shot a 5-under-par to finish the day in a tie for fourth place, and Thomas Detry is also tied with Kim on the leaderboard.

Another hot streak for Collin Morikawa

Collin Morikawa nailed three consecutive birdies in the front nine to get him out of an early hole, and he’s done it again on the back nine to propel him near the top of the leaderboard.

Morikawa birdied Nos. 12-14 to put him at 4-under-par and is now tied for sixth. He’s knocked in some big putts during the hot streak, all of which were at least 10 feet away from the cup.

Tom Kim having mistake-free first round

Tom Kim has been impressive in his young PGA Tour career, and the 21-year-old is having another outstanding round on Thursday at 5-under-par through 13 holes.

Kim hasn't bogeyed in the first round so far, and he has birdies in three of his last four holes. His best finish in a major came in The Open in 2023 when he finished tied for second.

Thomas Detry climbing leaderboard

Thomas Detry has played a mistake-free first round so far as he’s made five birdies and avoided any bogeys through 11 holes. His shots on the fairway have been excellent and have set him up for relatively short putts. He’s tied for fourth place alongside Rory McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre.

The Belgian golfer has never won a PGA Tour event.

Scottie Scheffler finishes front nine strong

Scottie Scheffler had a hot start to the day with an eagle on No. 1, and he’s keeping a steady pace at 3-under-par through nine.

The world No.1-ranked player looked immortal until he bogeyed on the par-4 fifth, but he regained ground with a birdie on the par-5 seventh. He had a chance to climb up the leaderboard on No. 8 with a 56-foot putt for birdie, but it fell just short of the cup.

Xander Schauffele remains in first place after his fantastic 9-under-par day.

Collin Morikawa drills long putt to get under par

The 2020 PGA Championship winner is heating up after a slow start.

Collin Morikawa had two bogeys through five holes, but he's found a rhythm with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-8. He capped off an impressive streak with a 41-foot putt on the par-3 eighth to secure the birdie and put him at 1-under-par for the first time on Thursday.

Jon Rahm struggling early

Jon Rahm had an odd beginning of the week at the PGA Championship with his press conference, and things aren't looking good on the course either.

Rahm has quickly fallen into a hole with bogeys on three of his first five holes, including three in a row on Nos. 4-6. The Spaniard hasn't been able to get close on the green and his putter hasn't done him any favors either. Rahm is 4-over-par through six.

Scottie Scheffler cruising in solid start

Scottie Scheffler is showing early why he is the world No. 1-ranked player.

After his incredible eagle on No. 1, the 2024 Masters champion is in a groove after he picked up a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole to put him at 3-under-par and already launching himself into the top 10 of the leaderboard. Scheffler had great second shot on No. 4 to set up the birdie to put himself 13 feet away from the hole. It was a breeze with the putter, having no problem sinking the putt.

Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, others within striking distance

For the first round of a major championship, scores have been rather low for those players who teed off early at Valhalla. A brief fog delay caused tee times to be pushed back slightly, and the moist early conditions allowed many golfers to rack up the birdies.

In addition to Xander Schauffele's 9-under 62, fellow Americans Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala shot 65s to finish their opening rounds just three shots off the pace.

Other excellent early rounds included 5-under 66s from Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre. Among a group at 4-under 67 were Americans Ben Kohles, Brooks Koepka and Taylor Moore.

Scottie Scheffler tees off at PGA Championship, follows with epic shot

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler has a tough act to follow as he tees off at the second major championship of the golf season.

But after one hole, he appears to be up for the challenge.

Chasing Xander Schauffele's course record 62, the world's No. 1-ranked player safely launched his tee shot down the right side of the fairway on No. 1 ... and hit his approach shot into the hole for an eagle, from 167 yards out.

On ESPN's broadcast of the tournament, anchor Jim Nantz succinctly said, "Hello dad" as the ball took one hop into the cup.

Scheffler is playing in his first tournament since his wife Meredith gave birth to their son Bennett earlier this month.

Brooks Koepka soars on No. 7

The first eagle of the 106th PGA Championship belongs to defending champion Brooks Koepka.

Going for the green in two on the 590-yard par-5 seventh hole, Koepka hit his second shot from 211 yards out to within three feet of the hole. He converted the eagle putt to get him to 3-under for the tournament, then followed it up with a birdie to get to 4-under with one hole left to play.

Koepka has won five major titles in his career, including three wins in this event. He previously won the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019 in addition to last year.

Shortly after Koepka's eagle on No. 7, Bryson DeChambeau got one of his own on the same hole by holing out a 51-yard shot from the fairway.

Tiger finishes Round 1 at 1-over

Tiger Woods sits 10 shots off the pace at Valhalla after shooting an opening round of 1-over par.

On the same course where he won the 2000 PGA Championship (in a playoff over Bob May), Woods finished with back-to-back bogeys on holes 8 and 9 for a 72.

It was an up-and-down round of three birdies and four bogeys for Woods, who's seeking to tie the record of five PGA titles held by Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen.

Cam Smith gets his feet wet

Australian Cam Smith found himself in an interesting situation during his opening round that may seem quite familiar to many weekend duffers.

Tied for sixth at 3-under par, Smith's wayward drive on the par-5 seventh left him just to the right of the fairway landing area. The problem was, his ball was in the hazard and sitting in some shallow water.

Smith declined to take a drop and chose to play it out of the hazard … but not before taking off his shoes and socks to take his stance.

The Australian was able to make solid contact and get the ball back in play safely. His approach shot from 243 yards found the right rough, but he chipped it to within seven feet and sunk the putt for an unconventional par.

Xander Schauffele ties history with 62

Xander Schauffele has set a blistering pace at the 2024 PGA Championship, shooting a major championship record-tying 62 in his opening round to lead the tournament by three shots over Tony Finau.

Starting his round on the back nine, Schauffele – currently No. 3 in the World Golf Rankings – collected nine birdies without a bogey to get to 9 under par.

Finishing up with a two-putt par on the 415-yard, par-4 ninth hole at Valhalla Country Club, Schauffele's 62 tied the record he shares with Rickie Fowler (2023 U.S. Open) and Branden Grace (2017 British Open) for the lowest round ever in a men's major championship.

Tiger adds another birdie

Tiger Woods is back into red figures after notching his second birdie on the front nine at the par-5 seventh. (He began his round on hole No. 10.)

After a 300-yard drive into the landing area surrounded front and back by water, Woods found a fairway bunker on his second shot, but hit his approach shot to 13 1/2 feet and nailed the putt for birdie to get to 1-under for his round with two holes to play.

The birdie put Woods in a tie for 20th place.

Schauffele on record-setting pace

Continuing his early assault on Valhalla, Xander Schauffele has jumped out to a big lead with two holes to play in his opening round. With a two-putt birdie on the Par-5 seventh hole, Schauffele moved to an astounding 9 under par.

It was his fourth birdie on the front nine – after starting with five birdies on the back nine. If he birdies one of his two remaining holes and gets to 10-under, he would find himself in uncharted territory.

No player has ever shot 61 in any round of any major championship.

Schauffele leads Tony Finau and Robert MacIntyre by four shots.

Tiger back to even after birdie

Tiger Woods finally took advantage of a Par 3 on No. 3, using an iron to get within 5 feet of the cup and easily tap in for birdie. But no one has been able to stop Xander Schauffele (-7), who added another birdie at No. 4 and has a two-shot lead over Tony Finau, after he birdied 18 to close out his front nine.

Xander Schauffele moves to 6-under

Another hole and another birdie for Schauffele. He made good on the par 4, No. 2, while Rory Mcllroy hit the pin on the first hole of the back nine and tapped in for an easy birdie putt. McIlroy sits at 2-under, four shots off the lead.

Rory McIlroy struggling at end of front nine

Rory McIlroy showed a bit of frustration after his long putt for par on 17 went wide and settled for a bogey. He is 1-under and seeking his first major in 10 years, while Viktor Hovland's struggles on 17 also led to a bogey, and he is at 2-under. Three Americans are on top of the leaderboard, led by Xander Schauffele (-5), Tony Finau, who missed a birdie chance at 16, and Doug Ghim, who are one shot back.

Tiger finishes up and down front nine, Schauffele increases lead

Tiger Woods had one birdie and two bogeys in an uneven first nine holes and finds himself at 1-over after he settled for par on the Par 5 18th. Xander Schauffele is the leader at 5-under at the start of the back nine after another birdie on the 18th. Tony Finau is off to a torrid start as well and is one shot back after three straight birdies on 13, 14 and 15.

Xander Schauffele surges to PGA Championship lead

Schauffele, seeking his first major victory, birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 16 to take the outright lead at 4-under through his first seven holes. Doug Ghim and Jordan Spieth, who is off to a great start with birdies on three of his first four holes to start the day, are one shot back. After a bogey on 15, Tiger Woods, who has been playing with fire with his putting all morning, is back to 1-over for the round.

Golfers struggling with Par 3s, McIlroy, Spieth joins leaders at 2-under

With golfers usually making up scores when a hole is a Par 3, the early stages of Round 1 at the PGA are proving difficult. So far, only nine birdies have been made on the four Par 3 holes that have been played (No. 3, 8, 11, 14). But there have been 20 bogeys on those holes as well. Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, after his birdie on No. 13, Doug Ghim, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Jordan Spieth and Sahith Theegala are on top at 2-under.

Jumbled leaderboard early in first round

Through the early portion of the first round, no golfer has broken through to establish themselves as the one to beat. Doug Ghim and Xander Schauffele are the early leaders at 2-under, and there are nine golfers at 1-under, including Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald. Tiger Woods again settled for par on No. 13 and is still 1-over through three holes. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Tiger off to slow start

After Tiger settled for par on his first hole, his tee shot on the par 3 No. 11 went awry, and he had to settle for a bogey. Woods sits at 1-over, and his putting will be the key moving forward to see if he can take advantage of the multiple holes set up for easy scores.

Rory McIlroy starts with birdie

Rory McIlroy knocked down a birdie putt to get his PGA Championship started with a bang. McIlroy joins Martin Kaymer, Xander Schauffele and Luke Donald – who bogeyed No. 5 – at 1-under.

PGA Championship leaderboard

As more golfers join the fray at Valhalla, Luke Donald and Doug Ghim find themselves at the top of the leaderboard at 2-under. Matt Wallace, Xander Schauffele and Adam Hadwin are in a three-way tie for third place at 1-under. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Tiger Woods nets par on No. 1 at PGA Championship

Tiger Woods had about a 10-foot putt for birdie, but rolled it past the hole to the right. Woods recovered, however, and made his putt for par. Tiger joins 15 other golfers at even at Valhalla.

Luke Donald birdies No. 4 at PGA Championship

Luke Donald carded a birdie on the par-3 No. 4 hole to move to 2-under and take early sole possession of the lead at the PGA Championship. Donald's best finish at a PGA Championship came in 2006 when he tied for third.

Rory McIlroy starts PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy, who has finished at the top of the leaderboard in his past two tournaments, is just barely off the left side of the fairway as he starts his 2024 PGA Championship.

Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose teed off alongside McIlroy. Johnson and Rose were also in the rough, but just off to the right.

Tiger Woods starts PGA Championship

Tiger Woods ripped a perfect drive down the middle of the fairway to kick off his 2024 PGA Championship.

Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley followed, with Bradley joining Woods on the fairway and Scott finding the rough.

The next group off the No. 10 tee will be Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose at 8:25 a.m. ET.

Justin Thomas starts PGA Championship

Ludvig Aberg, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas are on the course after teeing off on No. 10. The group behind them is Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley, who are scheduled to tee off at 8:14 a.m. ET.

Nine golfers are through one hole, and Luke Donald leads the way at 1-under. Meanwhile, Doug Ghim, Tyler Collet, Adrian Meronk and Ben Kohles are even-steven. Find the live updating PGA Championship leaderboard here.

Luke Donald with first birdie of 2024 PGA Championship

After splitting the fairway on his drive off the tee, Luke Donald wrapped up his first hole at the PGA Championship with about a 15-foot putt to card a birdie on the par 4 No. 1 hole.
