"Second Highest Waterfall in India"

Jog falls tourism.

The second-highest plunge waterfall in India, Jog Falls is a major tourist attraction in Karnataka and is the highest waterfall in the state. Second, to the Nohkalikai Falls of Meghalaya, Jog falls drops about a huge 253 m (850 ft. ) in a single fall. However, due to the construction of Linganamakki Dam which is a hydroelectricity plant closeby, the flow in the falls is hugely restricted before monsoons. So, it is best to go during the Monsoon season to see the falls in its full form.

Jog Falls is a 2 hours drive from the main Shimoga city. Also known as Gerosappa Falls or the Joga Falls, this seasonal waterfall is broken into four segments - Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani. They're named based on certain characteristics of the streams. Raja is an unbroken stream, Roarer is a strong and violent current that gushes down to meet the Raja stream, Rocket flows down in different jets and Rani is a quiet stream with falls in foam. Next time you visit, try identifying the streams!

This guide invites you to discover the unique charm of Jog Falls and its surroundings, where every path leads to a new adventure and every viewpoint tells a fascinating story.

History of Jog Falls

Jog Falls, also known as Gerusoppe Falls, Gersoppa Falls, and Jogada Gundi, is steeped in the history of Karnataka. Jog Falls Travel Guide 2022| A Must Visit Majestic Attraction

Jog Falls Travel Guide

Jog Falls is a precious stone in the crown of Karnataka, which is blessed with many natural jewels. Situated close to Shivamogga, the gateway to Malenadu, it is one of the highest falls in India with water falling from a height of about 800 feet majestically.

I had read about Jog falls in our textbooks and it was my dream to visit this place. I got a chance to visit this during my college days. That was some time back and again I visited this place two years back which is fresh in my memory.

The first view of the falls was exciting and much-awaited. I was mesmerized by the sight of jog falls. The flow of water was medium, but still, it was a feast to the eyes.

My recent visit had an extraordinary touch to it. Let me tell you the details.

A group of three of us started from Bangalore. We reached Shivamogga by evening and halted there. While having our dinner, the person in the hotel who was serving us advised us to visit Bangaramakki temple, which is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Bangaramakki – A Temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman

I should certainly elaborate on a few points about Bangaramakki here. It is situated at a distance of 45 km. from Talaguppa on Bangalore Honnavar Highway. A deviation from the main road takes you to the temple.

Situated amidst lush greenery, it is a pleasure to drive here. Greenery everywhere, coffee plantations on both sides of the road look even better under light showers.

People from all over India visit this place for a special reason. The main priest here reveals answers to the questions you have in your mind. There is no need for you to describe your problems, just stand in the row, he reads your mind and gives solutions.

This is a unique experience and many people have found solutions. Better to book your appointment and make sure the predictions are there before landing there.

Jog Falls – Nature’s Gift

The beauty of this fall is beyond words. Even pictures and videos can not give you the real picture. I suggest visiting this place at least once. Water falling from a height of 800+ feet creates music, water mist, and a beautiful view. The Western Ghats make a perfect home for the majestic falls.

The greenery around the falls adds to the beauty of the falls. There are different spots from where you can watch the falls to get a view from different angles.

There is a restaurant which serves food to the tourists. We tasted Masala dosa here which was reasonably good.

All this is normal information. We had a special experience which I certainly want to share.

Jog Falls from a different angle!

We met a guide who told us about a point from where we can get an extraordinary view of the falls. He also told us permission is required to go there but he can manage. We were also warned that we have to walk a small distance say around 700-800 meters which would be a climb.

We decided to venture with all enthusiasm. The guide took us to the nearest point in our car from where we had to walk. We had to tread a rocky path which was not very easy, but we managed and reached the viewpoint.

The entire area looked like any other place with small streams visible at distance. For a moment we thought we have been fooled.

The guide took us to the top of a particular rock and asked us to lie down and take a look. When I did, it was like ‘full paisa vasool’.  A small string of water was falling from the bottom of the rock to a depth of 800 feet. The view from there was awesome.

We could get the view only by sleeping on the rock. It is definitely not for those who have a high phobia. We have to hold the rock, lean a little forward to get the view.

It was worth all the risk and the view I caught in the camera of my eyes is still fresh. I heard now they have barricaded the area and people are not allowed there.

Where it is

Jog falls is located in Karnataka, Sagara of Shimoga district. Shimoga is well connected by Road and Rail from Bangalore. Shimoga is a nice place to stay with all facilities and Jog is 100 km. by road from here. There are some decent hotels and stays in Sagar which is just 30 km. from Jog.

Bangalore to Jog Falls travel

Jog is located at a distance of 400 km. from Bangalore. The travel will be through Tumkur, Chitradurga, Shivamogga.

If you have no time constraints, do visit Chitradurga Fort. A tour around the fort will take about 3-4 hours. Better to avoid sunny times as rocks will get hot and it will be difficult to roam around. It is important to take a guide here without the explanation of whom, you will not understand the significance of the fort.

I suggest a break of journey at Shivamogga where you can find good eateries. Do not forget to taste Menasinakai bonda and khara mandakki when here. Meenakshi Bhavan is a nice place to taste South Indian delicacies. Do not forget to taste fresh from pan Mysore Pak at Narasimha Bhavan.

Time to visit Jog falls

Though rainy days which is between June and September is better to see the waterfall. But you have to be lucky to witness falls in their full glory. The rainwater does not flow freely.

There is a dam constructed across River Sharavati to hold the water. The falls will be in full bloom only when water is released from the dam. The more the water released, the more will be the beauty of the falls.

Where to stay

There is Mayura Hotel run by KSTDC located very close to the viewpoint. The hotel is reasonably good including food. I prefer going in groups to such places from the point of safety and also to enjoy more.

You can also choose to stay at Shimoga and make a day trip to Jog, which is about 100 km.

Getting down to the bottom of the falls

There are steps to get down to the bottom of the falls and those who are adventurous can go down. I did not venture this as it looked steep and also time-consuming. If you plan to climb down, plan accordingly. Remember there are restrictions for this and during rainy days it is not allowed.

Attractions around Jog falls

There are lots of places to visit around Jog Falls. Apart from Bangaramakki, you can visit Burude falls, Gerusoppa, Linganamakki Dam, and so on. Pick the places based on your interest. You can also visit Sringeri, Sigandur, Horanadu, depending on your interest.

If you are fond of the ocean and beaches, you can plan a visit to Gokarna and Murudeshwara. Murudeshwara is a place worth staying a night in beach view rooms. It is a unique experience watching the song and dance of the waves in the serenity of night. It is still better if it is a full moon day.

Just a drive around this place rejuvenates you with its panoramic views. Mountains covered with greenery, coffee plantations, jackfruit trees, beetle leaves, pepper trees are the specialties of this region.

Do stop for a hot sip of coffee on roadside coffee stalls where you can taste excellent, fresh, aromatic coffee with some light snacks.

Always taste local, seasonal fruits. Though the name is the same, like Banana, it tastes different in each region.

Developments awaited in Jog!

There are proposals to develop Jog Falls into a major tourist spot. A firm based at Abu-Dhabi is making big plans like Water Park, rope-way across the fall, landscaping, and gardening are expected to come up.

The company is also planning to ensure the glory of the falls around the year using water recycling technology. A food court and an art gallery to bring to light the local talent are also in the anvil. A digital information center to provide all the information for the tourists is also included in the plan.

All these are aimed to attract more tourists to this jewel of nature which it aptly deserves.

A personal request

We travel to rejuvenate ourselves and blend with nature. While achieving this, we should be careful not to harm nature.

  • Good if you use leaf plates and cups for your needs. If not, please do not leave plastic cups, plates, covers, etc. anywhere.
  • Just take a dip in the river or any water bodies. Do not pollute them by using chemicals like soaps, detergents, etc.
  • When we travel on our own, we tend to stop in between to watch nature, streams, birds, etc. Please do not harm any trees, plants, animals, birds, etc. especially if you are traveling in your own vehicle.
  • Make travel safe for yourself, your family members, and other co-tourists.
  • Finally, sharing is very important. Like at viewpoints, temples, etc. after you have had a view, please make way for others.

Finally, Covid is still amongst us. So if you are traveling take all necessary precautions. It is not just for you, it is for your family, for your friends, for your countrymen that you have to stay safe!

Planning a weekend trip from Bangalore to Jog Falls on budget

by Ava and Sush · Published December 4, 2019 · Updated June 18, 2022

“Madam, you have been very lucky. My father was saying there has never been this much of water in the falls in October end in the last 25 years” – Our driver told us. And how true his words were. Though Jog Falls has been on our list for a long time now, we could not make it there due to some or other reason in the limited window of July-September. This is the time when  the water in the falls cascades down with immense force creating an incredible sight. Train tickets in waiting and my stomach infection still lingering after 15 days, we were not sure if we would make it this time too. To make it worse, came the cyclone warning that would affect coastal Karnataka including Jog falls area. Then like a sign, the tickets got confirmed with the help of a friend and my stomach started showing positive signs. We were all set to visit Jog Falls.

Now since we have seen it, we can definitely vouch that it looks much more beautiful to the eyes than in any of the pictures we had ever seen. So if you are in Karnataka, we definitely recommend a visit to Jog Falls. We are going to put all the information in this blog to help you plan a weekend trip from Bangalore to Jog Falls on budget.

Budget for the trip

If you choose sightseeing of places around Jog Falls, then that would cost you extra.

You can still bring down this cost if you choose sleeper class in train and a more budget option for accommodation. You can even skip the stay and come back the same day as the trains reach early in the morning and start around 8pm at night. So you will get full day to see the falls as well as a few other places around it. If you want to freshen up, there are toilets in the falls compound.

About Jog falls

Jog (pronounced as “Joga”) falls is situated in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka and is considered the 2nd highest plunge waterfall in India. This is actually a set of waterfalls instead of being a single one which are created by the mighty Sharavati river. The number of falls you see depends on the season and the amount of water. During July to September, the falls look magnificent with huge volume of water plunging from a height of 253 metres. Not only the waterfalls, but the whole area surrounding the falls is very scenic with verdant hills and refreshing greenery. We could see 4 waterfalls cascading down with huge amount of water as it had recently rained for a few days and the Linganmakki dam gates were opened feeding more water to the falls.

Best time to Visit

July to September  – This is the monsoon season when the water in the falls is more and the falls look the mightiest.

Our time of visit – October last week. We have been lucky although it is not the ideal time to visit.

How to reach Jog Falls from Bangalore

The most convenient and budget friendly way to reach Jog falls is via train. The nearest railway station for Jog Falls is Talguppa station which is around 14 kilometres from the falls. There are regular trains plying between Bangalore and Talguppa station. The journey takes around 8-8.5 hours.

Once you come out of the station, you will find taxis, autos and buses (both private and Govt ones) that can take you to the falls. Taxi charges are around INR 300-400. But the budget option is to catch one of the buses to Jog Falls. We took a private bus that. Charged INR 20 per head.

No pantry car in the train. So have your dinner or pack it before boarding the train. If you can not speak or read Kannada, then take help from local people to find the right bus. The buses do not have their destinations written in any other language than Kannada itself.

There are a few direct KSRTC buses that run from Bangalore to Jog Falls. The total journey takes 7-8 hours. You can also catch an overnight bus to Shimoga which is around 100 kms from Jog Falls. A lot of KSRTC and private buses ply regularly in this route. Take another bus from Shimoga to Jog falls which takes around 2-2.5 hours.

Accommodation at Jog Falls

When it comes to accommodation the  KSTDC Mayura Gerosoppa Resort  managed by the Karnataka Govt has the best location and views. It is right in the compound of Jog Falls and the deluxe ac rooms even provide view of the falls from the room itself. If you are on budget or travelling solo, then you can also check out their dormitory which is available at INR 300 per bed. The resort is very very clean and the staff are super nice. So we definitely recommend this place.

The room rates are around INR 500 higher on weekends than weekdays. So you may plan your trip on weekdays to save money as well as to avoid the crowd. Check the prices over MakeMyTrip before booking the hotel. You can get the same rooms at much lower prices than the hotel website.

Being the closest to Jog Falls, this hotel gets booked quite fast during weekends and holidays. So make your bookings beforehand if you want to stay here. Otherwise, you can also check out the home stays in the nearby town of Sagara.

Things to do

It is easy to spend a day at Jog Falls, checking out the various view points in and around it. But if you are keen on seeing the other attractions, there are a few more things you can do in 2 days.

Check out Jog Falls from both view points

You can have gorgeous views of Jog Falls from 2 points, one from the compound of Hotel Mayura Gerosoppa Resort (accessible to general public) and the other from Top Point. The area around Mayura resort has many view points/platforms that allow close views of the falls from different angles. Take a walk to the last point in the row to have a lovely view of the dam below flanked by mountains at both sides. There are a few small waterfalls in the area (visible only during monsoons) that adorn the greenery covered surrounding.

Top point hardly takes 10 minutes by car from Mayura Resort. The view point is in the compound of a former British Bungalow, now used as the PWD guesthouse. This is the point from where the upper part of the falls can be seen and when water is more, the views are truly breathtaking.

The taxi drivers will try to persuade you for sightseeing of a number of view points around. But most of those points do not offer anything special (even our hotel staff confirmed the same). So you can simply visit the above mentioned view points for Jog Falls and skip the rest.

Climb down to the bottom of Jog Falls

It is possible to reach the bottom of Jog falls through a set of steps made and maintained by Tourism Department. There are more than 1300 steps (starts near a view point inside Mayura Resort compound) which are accessible when the water level in the falls is not too high. Just remember that the climb up is a bit tiresome and may not be suitable for people with arthritis and other physical problems.

Other places of interest nearby

There are some more points that you can cover as part of your trip to Jog Falls.

Ancient temples

There are many ancient temples all at a maximum of 30 minute drive away from Jog Falls and close to the nearby town of Sagara. Check out Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple, Keladi Rameshwara Temple and Kedareshvara Temple for ancient architecture and exquisite craftsmanship.

Bheemeshwara Falls and Temple

This is something not many people know about (except some local people) and you will not see it in any of the search results for places to see around Jog Falls. So it is still a very serene place away from the tourist radar. There is a temple and a beautiful falls to see here and this requires a bit of trekking. If you are interested to visit this place, talk to any local driver or your hotel staff and they will guide you. For more details, check out the FB page here .

Dabbe Falls

A stunning waterfall well hidden inside a lush forest and not explored by many. It is located in Hosagadde village around 25 kilometres away from Jog Falls. The waterfall needs a bit of trek to reach and the length of the trek varies depending on the season. In summer, vehicles can go inside and you have to trek just a kilometre or two to reach the falls. But during the rains, the trek is longer (7-9 kms) as vehicles can not go inside. The trek is of moderate nature and requires some level of fitness.

Add one or two days more to your trip and you can cover a few places not very far from Jog Falls. Following are the available options.

For one day

  • Kodachadri Hill  – A great place for trekkers, Kodachadri peak offers stunning views of surrounding hills and lush forests. There are also jeeps that take people to the peak if you do not want to trek.
  • Honnavar  – Around 70 kilometres away from Jog Falls, Honnavar is the perfect getaway featuring beaches, backwaters, temples and a waterfall. Check out Gerosoppa bridge on the way to Honnavar.
  • Yana Caves  – A very unique attraction with two gigantic black rocks rising above the blanket of a green forest.
  • Murudeshwar  – With a massive statue of Lord Shiva against the backdrop of Arabian Sea, this place is a famous tourist destination in Karnataka and is one of its kind.
  • Mirjan Fort  – A very beautiful fort on the way to Gokarna that looks like a castle from outside. Still not known to many, this place is a green paradise during or just after the monsoons. We are so glad we decided to visit this place on our trip to Jog falls. A detailed blog post on this is coming soon.

For 2-3 days

If you are looking for relaxation and some vitamin sea, then choose any of the following.

  • Mangalore and Udupi – Check out our Udupi blog for more details

We decided to visit Mirjan Fort and totally loved the place. Read our Mirjan Fort Article to know more.

Additional things to know

  • On weekends and holidays, visit the falls as early as 7am to avoid the crowd. After 9 am, all tourist buses and cars flock in to the place making it more crowded.
  • Drinking water refill is available in the Jog Falls compound. They charge Rs 2 per litre for normal water and Rs 5 per litre for cold water.
  • Pay and use toilets are available in the falls compound.
  • For food, Mayura restaurant available in the falls compound serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Mobile Network connectivity is really poor in and around Jog Falls area. Both Airtel and Jio did not work most of the time.
  • If you are planning to travel by bus from the railway station, then carry a small strolley bag or backpack that can be accommodated in the luggage compartment overhead. Otherwise, it gets really difficult to put the luggage on the bus floor that almost blocks the way.
  • The station at Talguppa is a very small one and no food is available inside or outside the station. So pack your meals before boarding the train.
  • Always talk to the locals when you are in doubt. We found them very friendly and helpful. It’s a local guy who stopped the right bus for us to get to Jog Falls from the train station.

Jog Falls Travel Guide, Shimoga: Stay & Jog falls Trek

Jog falls from bottom

Jog Falls is the second highest waterfall in India located in Shimoga district in Karnataka. Jog falls is a major tourist attraction during monsoon. Along with covering Jog falls, other places of interest that you might also be interested in are Gokarna beaches , Yana caves , Mirjan fort etc. Here is complete Jog falls travel Guide.

Page Contents

Jog falls is a major tourist spot located in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. It is located at a distance of around 100 Km from Shimoga, 30 Km from Sagar taluk, and 60 Km from the town of Sirsi . Jog falls is formed over the famous north Karnataka river called Sharavathi River. It is made up of four different falls which are combined called Jog falls.

The four major falls which form Jog falls are:

  • Roarer falls
  • Rocket falls

Jog falls drops from a height of around 253 meters or 830 feet which make it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India after the Nohkalikai Falls in Meghalaya which drops from a height of 335 meter or 1100 feet.

How to reach Jog falls from Bangalore?

Jog falls is situated at a distance of around 420 Km from Bangalore. There are direct buses from Bangalore to Jog falls. But I would advise you to go by your own vehicle in a group so that you can cover other places as well which are around. There are different routes to Jog falls from Bangalore and there are different traveling times to jog falls from Bangalore as well.

Bangalore to Jog falls by road

Bangalore to Jog falls: Route one

As shown in the route map above, route one passes through Tumkur, Sira, Hiriyur, Davangere etc. After driving for around 280 Kms on this highway, you drive another 125 Kms on a single-lane road. The drive of 278 Kms is on a double lane and sometimes triple-lane highways.

So, you would not get tired while driving and you can easily cover the major portion of the entire stretch. Last 125 Kms has to be driven on a double road, mostly state highway, however, there would not be much traffic.

Bangalore to Jog falls: Route two

Route two is another famous route which is known mostly to the cab drivers and this route passes through the town of Shimoga & Sagar. While going, we took the second route and it was not as comfortable as the first route which we took while returning.

Moreover, on the weekends, there will be a lot of traffic on this route as well especially the stretch of the last 100 km because this route is also taken by the buses. Around two in the night, we ran out of fuel and it was really difficult to find a petrol station which was open in the night on this route. Moreover, the whole drive is entirely on a double road that’s why route one is faster by one hour compared to route two.

Jog falls parking & viewpoint:

Jog falls has got a big parking lot which also has the viewpoints made at the edge of the parking. From the viewpoint, you can see the Jog falls.

Jog falls from Jog falls viewpoint

Jog falls from Jog falls viewpoint

The parking space is really big and there are different charges for the different vehicles. For a car, it was Rs. 30 for us. Besides vehicle parking, you also have to pay Rs. 10 per person for Jog falls. The viewpoint is really wide and can accommodate many persons at a time.

Jog falls trek & steps:

You can also walk down to the bottom of the Jog falls by taking the steps which go down to the base of the falls. There is a total of 1,388 steps in total which take you down to the base of the falls. The view is really awesome and different from the bottom of the falls. There is an enclosed barred area at the bottom beyond which you cannot go.

Jog falls steps timings: 9 AM to 4 PM.

Jog falls from bottom

It took us around 25 minutes for us to go down and to climb up, it took around 40 minutes. There is a water stream at the bottom where you can fill water because while climbing up, you might feel thirsty.

Staying near Jog falls – Hotels & resorts, Jog falls

Jog falls has limited staying options when it comes to staying near Jog falls. Here is a Google map view of the hotels near Jog falls in the radius of 15 Kms. Here is a list of the hotels around Jog falls:

Hotel Mayura, Jog falls

Hotel Mayura is the closest hotel to the Jog falls viewpoint. This hotel is run by Karnataka State Tourism Development Department. It has two blocks named, Sharavati and Tunga blocks with ten rooms each. Half of them are two bedded and others are three bedded.

The rates are cheap compared to private hotels. The Sharavati blocks provide a wonderful view of the falls. Check-in time is noon. Both blocks have western-type toilets but the Tunga block does not have hot water. There is one more ten-bedded dormitory in Tunga block.

Prakurthi Yatri Nivas Lodge, Near Rani falls

If somehow you are unable to get a room at the hotel Mayura then Prakurthi Yatri Nivas lodge should be the next one that I would like to suggest. What I really liked about this lodge is the location. It is just located beside the Rani falls though you cannot see the falls but yet you can hear the sound of the gushing waterfalls.

AC room costed us around Rs. 1400 and NonAC room cost us around 1100 rupees. They have warm water facilities, parking, and restaurants as well.

Panoramic view from Prakurthi Yatri nivas, Rani falls as seen in right

Panoramic view from Prakurthi Yatri Nivas, Rani falls as seen in the right

Sharavathi Adventure Camp, Jog falls

Adventure camps are run by Jungle lodges which is another initiative from the Karnataka tourism. However, unlike Karnataka Holidays hotels, Jungle lodges are costlier. It is located at a distance of around 6 Km from the Jog falls but it worth one time stay there.

Matthunga Homestay near Jog falls

Matthunga Homestay is situated at a distance of around 9 Km from Jog falls towards Sagar near Talaguppa. It is located at a nice location and will usually be crowded on the weekends.

Trip to JogFalls, Yana Caves, and Murudeshwar

  • 2 Days 3 Nights
  • Max People : 12

Had an awesome experience. Must plan your travel with this company.

Hidden in a remote, thickly forested corner of the Western Ghats 240 km northeast of Mangaluru , Jog Falls are the highest waterfalls in India . Today, however, they are rarely as spectacular as they were before the construction of a large dam upriver, which impedes the flow of the River Sharavati over the sheer red-brown sandstone cliffs.

Be wowed by Jog Falls, India’s highest waterfall

Still, the surrounding scenery is gorgeous, with dense scrub and jungle carpeting sparsely populated, mountainous terrain

The trail up to Jog Falls starts just below the bus park and winds steeply down to the water, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip.

The highest of the four cascades is the Raja, which thunders down nearly 300m. The whole patch opposite the falls has been landscaped for appealing viewing, with its own entrance gate and reception centre.

Things to know before visiting Jog Falls

Jog Falls are a little off-the-beaten tourist trail, so to get the most out of the waterfalls, follow these tips.

Opening hours

You can access Jog Falls and its visitor centre seven days a week from 7.30am 9.30pm. The earlier you can arrive, the quieter it is.

What to wear

However, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear, as the terrain can be uneven and slippery, especially after the monsoon.

What to pack

It is advisable to carry a raincoat or umbrella if you don’t want to get wet. The falls generate a lot of mist and spray. Also carry drinking water, sunscreen, and insect repellent, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding areas.

How to get here

Most will arrive at Jog Falls from Gokarna. Here’s how to get here.

Jog Falls is connected by the well-paved NH-206 that crosses the Ghats from the coast south of Kumta, which is connected by frequent buses to Gokarna .

Coming from the south, it is slightly quicker to connect at Honnavar. On the inland side, there are hourly services to Shivamogga (Shimoga), from where you can change onto buses for Hosapete and Hampi . Change at Sagar (40km) instead for buses to Udupi , Mysuru , Hassan and Bengaluru .

Find out the best ways to get to India.

Best time to visit Jog Falls

If you can, head up here between October and January. The views of the falls from the opposite side of the gorge are impressive but during the monsoons mist and rain clouds tend to envelop the cascades.

Another reason not to come during the wet season is that the extra water, and abundance of leeches at this time, make the excellent hike to the floor valley a trial.
