Attention: This information is to be used as general guidelines for pet transport to India and may not be updated to meet the current Indian pet import requirements. Before you travel to any country with pets, contact the appropriate authorities for your destination country.

Microchip and Vaccination Requirements

Ensuring your pet's safety during its journey and in its new home starts with two essential requirements: a compliant microchip and up-to-date vaccinations.

  • Microchip : Your pet must be implanted with a microchip that conforms to ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO Standard 11785. This is crucial for identification and avoiding travel complications.
  • Rabies Vaccination : An original Rabies Certificate is essential. It must detail the microchip number, the date of injection, and the vaccine's validity period, highlighting the necessity of an inactivated vaccine.

Health Certificates and Documentation

Traveling to India with pets necessitates additional veterinary certifications beyond the microchip and rabies vaccine:

  • Vet Health Certificate (Form 7001) : This certificate, issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian within 10 days of your flight, confirms your pet shows no clinical signs of certain diseases.
  • Annexure I (for dogs) or II (for cats) Certificate : Similar to Form 7001, this must be issued within 10 days of departure.
  • USDA Endorsements : The USDA must stamp key documents, including the Microchip Implantation Record, Rabies Certificate, and Vet Health Certificate, for validation.
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) : Our team at PetRelocation can facilitate this temporary permit, which is crucial for entry into India.

Crate Acclimation and Preparation

Preparing your pet for a comfortable journey involves more than just paperwork. Crate acclimation is vital for minimizing stress:

  • Ensure the crate is airline-approved, and familiarize your pet well before travel to make the journey as stress-free as possible.

Restrictions on Importing Birds to India

When importing pets to India to protect local wildlife and agriculture, significant restrictions are to be considered.

  • India currently prohibits the import of domestic and wild birds, poultry, poultry semen, and swine from the United States. For details, refer to the India Ministry of Agriculture.

50 tried and tested tips for travelling with pets in India

There’s an inexplicable joy in travelling with your pet , be it your dog , cat, guinea pig, or any other furry friend. However, holidaying with a pet requires a lot of prep that’s crucial for their safety and wellbeing, as well as paperwork and plenty of training. There’s a learning curve to planning trips with pets, but once you make a few, you get to know exactly how to go about it. We spoke with canine behaviourists, trainers, a veterinarian and pilot, as well as pet parents, who shared all you need to know before travelling with your pet.

Inputs from pet parents Arathi S. Unni (marketer, researcher and mom to two dogs, Sasha and Chloe); Sukanya Ray (mom to Kissy, the Shih Tzu, and senior subeditor at The Hindu); Aishwarya Mahurkar (cat mom to Momo); Sheela Joseph (IndiGo First Officer and dog mom); and Jaydev Calamur (dog dad to Luna, the lab); Namratha Rao , Canine Trainer & Behaviourist; Pranita Balar, Canine Consultant, Dognition Evaluator & Founder, Bark n Bond ; Dr. Michelle Simoes, a Mumbai-based veterinarian; Shraddha Vora of Alpha Angels Animal Trust, Goa; and Sahil Sharma and Amruta Patwardhan, co-founders of Koira Club and parents to a pack of four (Heidi, the Labrador; Shadow, the Siberian Husky; Pepper, the Beagle; and Asahi the Belgian Malinois).

Travelling with pets in India: the best travel tips to remember

Preparing and planning for the trip.

  • Before taking your pet on their first outstation trip, consult with your regular veterinarian.
  • When identifying destinations, pick places that will be good to stimulate them mentally and physically. They should be able to roam around, sniff, prance, explore— beaches, woods, waterfalls, hills, snowy areas, lakes, or even a house with a backyard!
  • Needless to stay, only book pet-friendly hotels. “Airbnbs have been my first port of call because they give you the flexibility to choose places that may have private, open spaces for pets. But there are many resorts and hotels across the country that allow pets today, including pitstop hotels. It’s best to call and book in advance, rather than cold-calling at the last minute,” says Unni. “You can also seek advice and recommendations from the reliable pet community online on where to stay.” Mahurkar recommends this Airbnb near Kolhapur and Nisarg Resort on the outskirts of Mumbai. For pet-friendly getaways near Mumbai, Sharma and Patwardhan recommend Wag-A-Bond and Wheyside in Karjat; White Haven in Khed Shivapur; Roar Ventures and L’attitude in Kamshet; Good Heavens in Kolad; Tents and Trails in Khopoli; and Belantara Beachfront in Vengurla.

Pre-travel training for dogs and cats

4. Teach your pet basic obedience cues—sit, stay, come (for recall), and settle. They must be trained and practised in different scenarios, around different distractions, before travel. For example, asking your dog to ‘stay’ before getting out of the car, or waiting in the vehicle while you step out.

5. Confinement training is recommended if you plan to travel with your pet. “There will be times when they have to be in a crate or confined by a leash, in a car or in a restaurant. This will ensure that your dog remains relaxed and comfortable when caged during travel. To get them used to confinement, start at home for short durations of one minute and slowly build it up,” advises Balar.

6. Begin crate training at least two to three months before your journey. You must train your pet to not only enter the crate on command but also to remain relaxed inside for several hours. If you crate-train well, your pet will remain as calm and comfortable as possible during air travel. For cats, this applies to the carriers they’ll be kept in during their time in the aircraft.

7. While they are in training, keep the door to the crate open so they can enter and leave as they please to begin with. Gradually proceed to crate training them at night and then moving the enclosure to another room. Most importantly, never use the crate as punishment. They should always see the crate as a happy place.

8. Pandemic pups and cats relate car rides to a trip to the vet, so this negative association needs to be reversed. This means a lot of fun car rides for your pet to get accustomed to being in a car. It could be a simple joy ride or a trip to a fun place like a park, as well. “I strongly recommend you start training your dog to be comfortable in a car at least two months before your journey,” says Rao. Desensitise your pet, beginning with sitting with them in the car in parking, followed by driving just around your society. Reward them with treats or pets whenever they are relaxed in the car and gradually increase the duration of the drive.

9. What helps most in tackling road sickness is behavioural training and teaching them to associate car rides with fun and safety. “Once my dog started trusting car rides, these episodes significantly reduced. She has now travelled as far as Kerala, Goa, and Kutch from Mumbai without throwing up,” says Unni.

10. Irrespective of whether you are travelling by rail, air, or road, carry water and their bowl. That’s basic because they tend to get stressed in transit, and need to be hydrated constantly. It helps modulate their body temperatures and calm them down.

11. Always carry extra collars, harnesses, and leashes—besides towels, sheets, and their bed if they’re fussy about it.

12. Keeping cleaning supplies like pet wipes, a paw hygiene spray, towels, brushes and blankets handy is a must. Add a shampoo to the list in case of emergencies—you never know what they decide to roll over. If you’re travelling with a puppy, pack pee pads!

13. Bring along their favourite toys, cushions, blankets, and other familiar items from home to make the trip as pleasant as possible for them.

Pet-friendly travel—things to keep in mind

14. Make sure all their vaccination records are up to date as you will need to submit copies with your flight carrier and the railways. You also need a fit-to-fly certificate from your veterinarian 72 hours before your scheduled departure for air and train travel. Keep them within reach at all times, in case local authorities ask for them. Better to be safe than sorry!

15. “Be up to date with the DHPPiL and rabies vaccines for dogs, and the Tricat and rabies vaccines for cats. You need to carry their vaccine records or pet passport while travelling,” says Dr. Simoes.

16. When in transit, always keep your dog’s registration papers in hand.

17. Cleanliness in public places is a major concern when it comes to travelling with pets, so it’s best if they are toilet trained. Plus, you must pick up after your pet! Be armed with scoopers, waste bags, newspapers, and a cleaning spray. “This goes a long way in making people more amenable to having pets around in public. It also makes you, as a responsible pet parent, more welcome” stresses Rao.

18. Try and keep calm yourself since pets feed off of our energy. If you are stressed and they sense a change in the tone of your voice, it will automatically make them anxious.

Food and snacks

19. If you’re using dry food, our practice is to carry food for an extra three days. “We use pre-packed meals by DogSpot.in , which contain all the necessary nutrition for our dogs,” says Sharma.

20. Some basic treats for the road—like biscuits, kibble, pet-friendly ice cream, boiled eggs, dry chicken, curd, and so on—work well for positive reinforcement.

21. If your pet is not prone to getting sick on the road, you could give them a small meal to keep them satiated. What they really need is basic hydration and a small quantity of food 90 minutes before the journey begins. “We were advised to avoid giving our dog heavy meals during the trip. So we restricted her food to small portions of kibbles but at regular intervals,” shares Ray.

Road trips with your pets

50 tried and tested tips for travelling with pets in India

22. Make sure your vehicle is fully prepared for your trip with your pets. Ensure your fluids are topped up, air pressure is on point, and your vehicle has been examined by a certified service technician to avoid mechanical issues—being stranded can add to the stress of being on the road for your pets and yourself.

23. Understand and plan your route so you can mark the spots ideal for pit stops. Take breaks for them (and you) to stretch, drink some water, take a loo break, and also sniff around. This not only gives them some exercise, but sniffing and exploring jogs their otherwise idle and anxious travelling brains.

24. There should be enough room for your pet in the car to allow for some movement. It’s important to make them feel at home, so carry their favourite toys and cushions.

25. In the case of large dogs, in-cabin organisation is important. “Each dog in our pack of four has their designated space in our Mahindra XUV 700 or Maruti Suzuki Alto. We use the dirtbag seat cover by Ruffwear and Trixie boot cover to ensure our dogs comfort and also to protect the interiors of our vehicles,” adds Sharma.

26. For single-day journeys eight hours and above, breaks every two to three hours are recommended. For longer road trips, an overnight stay at a pet-friendly hotel is advisable.

27. Keep the air conditioner at a pleasant temperature and avoid over-chilling the car. In less-polluted stretches, roll down windows.

28. Keep your pets stimulated with games or a quick run or walk during breaks. But avoid getting them over-excited.

29. Upon reaching your destination, stick to your pet’s regular daily schedule as much as possible.

30. When staying at unknown hotels and B&Bs with cats, you need to be extra careful with windows, balconies, and any open spaces.

Air travel with pets in India

Small dog is sticking his head out of a pet carrier on an airplane. rm

31. Air India and Akasa Air are the only two India airlines that allow pets aboard for domestic routes.

32. There are restrictions on weight, which includes the weight of the pet plus the crate they are in. While smaller pets like puppies, kittens, and dogs under 5kg can travel in the cabin with you, larger breeds require crate training beforehand as they’ll have to travel in the cargo section.

33. You need an IATA-certified crate to travel with your dog. The size of the crate should be in accordance with the size of your dog. A basic rule of thumb to get the correct size of crate is that your dog should be able to sit, stand, lie down on their side, and circle around comfortably inside. If it’s too small, your dog will be in a great deal of discomfort. And if the crate is too big, your dog may soil it.

34. Arrive early, at least four to five hours before your scheduled departure, so you have ample time to get through the formalities and let your pets do their business right before they’re dropped off.

35. When confining them to a crate for travel, make it as comfortable as possible for them. Keep their bedding, favourite blanket, and toys inside. Consider leaving something that belongs to you, like a T-shirt, so they’re comforted by your scent. Ensure positive reinforcement with praises and treats.

36. They must be fed at least 3 to 4 hours before the flight and given plenty of water to stay hydrated.

37. For international travel by air, consult with companies like The Bark Traveller , professionals with plenty of experience regarding the intricacies and tons of paperwork involved with pet travel and relocation.

38. For anxious and easily fearful pets, your vet may prescribe calming medications to help them have a less stressful experience during their flight. Some may advise against it because of the changing altitude and pressure in flights. But allow your trusted vet to take the final call.

39. Keeping your pet active the day of departure is a good idea. When tired out, they will be able to spend most of their time in the crate or carrier asleep.

Train travel with pets

50 tried and tested tips for travelling with pets in India

40. Indian Railways allows you to travel with pets in the first-class coupe. The most important step is to ensure you get confirmed first-class tickets. Either two or four seats are recommended for purchase because the booking increases your chances of getting the two-person coupe or the four-person cabin.

41. If you’re booking via an agent, ensure that your preference for a coupe or cabin is clearly communicated to avoid last-minute hassles on the day of departure.

42. Once you have your confirmed tickets, two days before a train journey , submit a physical letter at the reservation office of the main station—your starting point— requesting for a coupe. Here, you must present your confirmed seats and PNR number and let them know that you want to travel with your pet and need seats together. This step is crucial because the seating chart for any train journey is only made on the day of or a few hours before the journey.

43. On the day of the trip, you will get an SMS confirming your seats in the cabin or coupe. Get to the station at least two hours before time. Present your confirmed ticket at the parcel office at the station, as well as your pet’s fit-to-travel certificate from the vet and vaccine records. This step is needed because your pet is essentially travelling as cargo in the eyes of the railways. The authorities will then weigh your pet and levy parcel charges. While your pets don’t need a separate ticket to their name, you have to book either two or four tickets to ensure that you travel together in a coupe or cabin.

Travelling with cats—things to remember

44. Especially for cats, travelling by train is the most convenient option because you can place their litter box inside the coupe, without having to worry about getting off the coach.

45. It’s quite common for domesticated cats to not enjoy travelling or being out of their homes, unless they’ve been accustomed to it since kittenhood. While arranging for a sitter would be the preferred option more often than not, if they must travel, carry their crate or carrier along because it becomes their safe space in unfamiliar territory. Stuff it with something comfortable, like their favourite blanket.

46. You can also use some catnip in the carrier. Make it a happy place for them. There’s cat calming music that you can play during the journey to put them at ease.

Tackling motion sickness and anxiety

47. Keep an eye out for signs of distress during travel, like salivating or drooling, pacing up and down, whining, barking, or vomiting. You can work with a canine behaviour professional beforehand to get accustomed to such mannerisms, understand the signs better, and work on a personalised desensitisation programme.

48. If your pet is prone to getting sick or queasy in a moving vehicle, consult with your vet to know exactly what medication could help with motion sickness. “There could be a bit of trial and error before you find the perfect combination of medication and quantity of food before you travel,” warns Rao.

49. “Ondem works really well to curb nausea,” recommends Dr. Simoes. “If your dog or cat has a tendency to throw up during car rides, giving a dose every eight hours helps. Avomine is another option for dogs, but consult your vet personally about the dosage and which drug would best suit your pet.”

50. “For pets prone to anxiety, Gabapin helps calm them down,” advises Dr. Simoes. “It can be given half an hour before you start the journey.” “CBD oil works wonders for both anxiety and motion sickness; THC-free broad spectrum CBD oils work the best,” Dr. Simoes says. “Two drops of the 500mg CBD oil are enough for cats and small dogs; the dosage is up to 2-5ml for large dogs. Get your pet used to this a few days prior to travelling. Locally available Hexia tablets and the Cure By Design CBD oils also work well. Use these 30 minutes before starting your trip. You can give them another dose, if needed, after 6 hours.”

Safety, wellbeing, and first aid

Do your research and save contacts of local vets at your destination. Knowledge of local vets and animal welfare groups could prove life-saving in case of emergencies. Have your pets wear a tag on their collar with their name and your contact details. GPS trackers also help ensure their safety. “For dogs, it’s always a good idea to keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide on you, in case they swallow something untoward and you need to make them throw up. Also carry activated charcoal tablets (Flatuna), in case they ingest something toxic,” advises Dr. Simoes. “Pack medicines to deal with vomiting, diarrhoea, allergies, and antiseptics. I’d suggest Ondem, Cetzine, and Flagyl, a probiotic, the dosage of which depends on your pet’s weight,” says Dr. Simoes. “Betadine liquid and gauze bandages are a must to dress wounds. Potassium permanganate powder will help stop bleeding from a cut nail or a deep scratch.”

Crate training- Most probably, your pets will be traveling as manifested cargo on an international flight. This would mean that they will be spending an extended period of time in their crate. It is best to purchase a crate well beforehand and train your furry mate to use it.

This way, staying in their crate for such a long period of time won’t come as a shock to them. If they already think of the crate as their safe haven and get used to it, chances are the long flight will be less uncomfortable due to the familiar crate. When you buy a crate, ensure that it is IATA-approved.

Size of the pet- Many airlines are pet friendly and let pets travel as accompanied baggage in the cabin. This is subject to their size, and only if your pet is not larger than the prescribed size can they travel with their owners in the cabin. For that, the pet owner has to be carried in a crate and kept under the seat in front of that of the owner.

They should not be blocking the aisle and, in most cases, need to be mildly sedated and properly leashed to make their trip less uncomfortable both for themselves and the co-passengers.

Airlines and Covid-19- There are a lot of airline services that are pet friendly, like Air France and Delta Airlines to name a few. But you need to make sufficient enquiries in advance because owing to Covid-19 regulations, there have been some changes in the otherwise existing rules, including the availability of last minute flight tickets.

These rules keep changing in accordance with the severity of the outbreak of the disease from the place of boarding in the United States and the place of arrival in India. Keep in touch with the airline messages, and you will know if there has been any alteration in the travel scheme.

India pet passport regulations- While relocating your pet to India, there are certain regulations set by the Government of India that one has to abide by.

If you are a citizen of India wishing to travel with your four-legged friend to the country, you must have been abroad for more than two years, and any short visits to India must not exceed more than 180 days during this time. If you are a foreign national of Indian origin, you must have an OCI or PIO card to import your pet to India from their country of origin. Other Indian citizens looking to visit India on a short Visa can obtain a DGFT license to bring their pet to India if their pet departs with them.

Suppose you are a foreign national not of Indian origin. In that case, you must be relocating to India to work or live for a minimum of one year to import your pet. Unaccompanied dogs and cats cannot be imported to India unless associated with their owner, who is transferring residency to India. The owner must enter India within 30 days of their dog or cat. Dogs are not permitted to enter India for breeding or commercial purposes.

Quarantine holding area- Depending upon the health of your pet entering India, they may be subjected to 14 days of government-supervised quarantine period or 30 days of home quarantine. Generally, if it conforms to all pet import regulations under transfer of residency, then a home quarantine is imposed.

Up to two dogs or cats can enter India per person. More than two pets per person can only be imported under a License from the Director General of Foreign Trade.

Upon entry to India- All domestic dogs and cats need to be examined at the port of entry to India. They must be free of evidence of diseases communicable to humans. In those situations when it is found that your dog or cat is apparently not in good health, a licensed vet may be required for further examination.

The cost of this has to be borne by the owner of the pet.

All pets entering India with their owners must be issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Animal Quarantine Station in India, prior to their entry into the country. A certificate of health from a local veterinarian must also be obtained within 30 days of arrival in India, as required by the Animal Quarantine Station.

Note: Given that airline policies and international travel regulations can change, it's crucial to verify with the airlines and relevant authorities close to your travel date for the most accurate and updated information.

Bottom Line

India does not have an official ‘Pet Passport’, however it is a term used to describe the documents that are required to travel to and from India with a pet. Customs officials will need to see these documents in order to clear your pet. Essentially, a pet passport demonstrates that your pet is fit and healthy to travel. With a India Pet Passport, in most circumstances, your pet will not have to face a lengthly quarantine period. Generally, your pet will require a microchip, rabies vaccination, health certificate and no objection certificate (NOC). To export pets from India, you may require additional vaccinations and documents, as each country has different import requirements.

An India Pet Passport contains all the documents required to enter or leave India with your pet. Essentially, it will prove that your pet is fit and healthy enough to travel. Pet Passports are required to ensure imported pets don’t pose as a health threat to other animals.

An India Pet Passport can contain any of the following information:

  • Details of ownership (name, address, passport number, telephone, etc.)
  • Description of the animal (name, species, breed, date of birth, etc.)
  • Official veterinarian’s details
  • Rabies vaccination certificate
  • Microchip details
  • Additional vaccinations recorded and treatment records
  • An optional photo
  • Rabies antibody titer test results
  • Additional parasite treatment records
  • Anti-echinococcus treatment record

At minimum, your India pet passport will contain those listed 1-7. These are compulsory in order to travel to India with a pet. Those listed 8-11 are potential requirements that your pet may need, whether you are traveling into India or if you are traveling outside of India. We will go into more detail below.

All records must be signed and stamped by your official veterinarian with official stickers from the medication used.

VISIT YOUR VET

When booking the appointment, inform your vet where you and your pet are heading to, so they can prepare your pet’s vaccinations. If you are traveling outside of India, they may need to prepare additional vaccinations and treatments.

All pets will need to have their health checked before traveling to India. You will need to show an endorsed health certificate to customs officials to enter India with a pet. Dogs and cats will also need vaccinations.

Whether your pet needs vaccinations depends on its species. Only dogs and cats require a rabies vaccination. Other pet’s such as rabbits, rodents and birds do not require vaccinations.

At your appointment, your vet will complete any vaccinations, if required, and perform a basic health examination to ensure your pet is well enough to travel. Dogs must show no signs of any clinical sign of any disease including rabies, canine distemper, parvo virus infection, leptospirosis, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Scabies and Leishmaniasis.

Once the veterinarian is happy your pet is ready for travel, they will review and stamp all your paperwork. The appointment should take no longer than half an hour.

For more detailed information on the requirements skip to ‘ What are the requirements for an India Pet Passport? ‘.

TRAVELING FROM INDIA

If you are traveling from India with a pet, your pet will likely need additional treatments. At minimum your pet will need a microchip, a rabies vaccination and health check. Once your vet is happy that your pet is healthy enough for travel, they will review and stamp your paperwork.

Some countries also require that pets have a rabies titer test or rabies blood test, before entry. If your destination country requires a blood test then your vet will need to take a blood sample from your pet, before sending it off to a laboratory for testing.

MICROCHIPPING

Dogs and cats must be microchipped in order to obtain an India Pet passport. It is also a requirement for entering most countries.

A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip is around the size of a grain of rice – and is implanted just under your pet’s skin between its shoulder blades. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner.

Not only is it a requirement to enter India with a pet, it is highly recommended your pet is microchipped. This is because if you were to lose your pet while, a microchip makes it far more likely that you will be reunited.

We recommend that microchipping your pet is the first step in the process of obtaining a pet passport. This is because in many countries your pet’s rabies vaccination won’t be valid unless your pet is microchipped first.

RABIES VACCINATION

Dogs and cats (above the age of 3 months) require rabies vaccinations when traveling to most countries, including India. If your pet is not a dog or cat, he or she will not need a rabies vaccination. Instead, your pet may require an official health certificate to travel to India. Please see below for more information on health certificates.

In order to obtain an India Pet Passport, dogs and cats will need to have their rabies vaccination between 30 days and 12 months prior to entering India.

India recognises both 1-year rabies vaccinations, and 3-year vaccinations.

You can get your pet’s rabies vaccination at your local vet, alternatively some charities offer this service for free or for a discounted price.

Flying into India with a pet

Whether you are flying with your pet or it will be flying without you, it is important to choose an airline that serves the entire route from beginning to end. Before selecting an airline you will need to check their pet policies to ensure that they will allow your pet to fly. Will the airline allow your dog or cat to fly in the cabin with you? What are the restrictions? Will your pet need to travel in the cargo hold? Another option for airline pet travel is by private charter. Although this is more expensive than commercial airlines, pets will fly in the cabin with their owners in luxury, regardless of their size.

BEFORE YOU FLY

Pets must arrive within 30 days of their owners – all dogs and cats must arrive within 30 days of their owner’s first immigration stamp as displayed on their passport after issued a proper work or spouse/dependent visa. If your pet is traveling unaccompanied, they must enter between 7 and 14 days after you. Your original passport will be required and held until your pet clears customs.

You are permitted to bring up to two dogs or cats with you – if you are planning on bringing more you will need to apply for a DGTF license.

Book your flight into an approved port of entry – pet animals can only enter India through the ports of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Ensure you have the correct carrier – pets are required to travel in an appropriate cage according to its size and weight if travelling as freight. The requirements will differ depending on your airline, and whether your pet will travel in the cabin or the cargo. Generally, only dogs and cats weighing less than 5 kg can travel in the cabin in an agreed bag (depending on your airline).

ONCE YOU LAND

Clinical examination and document check – after arrival you will need to bring the your pet, along with the original health documents, to the Quarantine Station. The quarantine officer will verify your pet’s veterinary health certificate and vaccination records. Additionally, your pet will have a clinical examination/quarantine observation to ensure your pet is healthy and disease free. The animal/(s) will be examined clinically at the Quarantine Station for issuing Provisional Quarantine Clearance Certificate.

If the dog or cat is/are free from any clinical illness as well as the documents including veterinary certificate/ vaccination records are found in order, quarantine isn’t usually required. However, if the pet is detected with any signs of clinical illness during inspection, then they will be placed in quarantine for up to 30 days.

FLIGHT OPTIONS

Accompanied cargo / in the cabin – generally, small inoffensive domestic pets such as dogs, cats and birds, accompanied by valid Health and Rabies vaccination certificates, will be accepted on domestic flights in the cabin or in cargo hold at owner’s risk and subject to requirements of the carrier. This is usually not an option for international flights, however it differs between airlines.

Manifest cargo – manifest cargo is a system wherein the import of pet is done using the airline cargo. If the pet is being transported in this manner, the documents must include of copy of the passport of the owner/caretaker, a copy of the owner/caretaker’s e-ticket and a copy of the air way bill.

What airlines allow flying a pets to India?

Most airlines allow flying pets to India. However, depending on the airline you fly with, pet policies differ.

When flying with a pet, it’s important to check airline pet policies before booking any travel. Different airline’s have different rules for flying with pets, including which breeds are allowed, the size and weight of pets that are permitted, and the number of pets they allow. Fees also vary between airlines.

Most airlines will allow pets to fly in the cargo section of their planes, in a climate controlled, comfortable pet zone. Although some pet owners think this will be stressful for their pets, it can actually be a lot calmer than flying in the cabin.

Some airlines will allow pets to fly in the cabin with their owners, but generally only small dogs and cats that weigh under 8kg are permitted. This is because they must fly inside an airline-approved carrier that fits under the seat in front of their owners.

Guidelines for Pet Carriers

If you are flying to India with a pet, it is important that you use a pet carrier that is approved by your airline. Different airlines have different pet carrier policies, which often vary between aircrafts and routes. Check that your pet carrier is approved for your chosen airline, aircraft and route.

The rules and regulations have been set out by International Air Transport Association (IATA) ensure that dogs are comfortable when travelling. Thus, inside their travel carriers, pets must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in their kennel (without touching any side or the top of the container).

iata carrier guidelines

Furthermore, the rules for pet carriers also vary depending on whether your pet will be flying in the cabin or cargo area of the plane.

If you are travelling in the cabin with your dog or cat, then you will need to ensure that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. This is why, generally, only small dogs and cats weighing under 7-8kg are permitted in the cabin.

Additionally, if traveling with a dog, airlines often require that he or she is be obedient to your commands and can behave appropriately in public. Thus, he mustn’t bark or growl at other passengers or staff. If your dog does not behave in an appropriate manner, some airlines may transfer him to the cargo hold at an additional cost, or refuse to transport him all together. Some airlines require a consent form to ensure your pet is flight-ready.

MOST AIRLINES ONLY ACCEPT CAGES THAT COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING IATA REGULATIONS:

  • The cage must not have wheels
  • It must have a solid roof
  • The screws and nuts that hold the lower and upper parts of the cage must be properly installed and tightened – because yes, the cage must consist of two sections, made of solid and rigid plastic
  • The cage must also include bowls firmly attached to its lower wall containing food and water
  • It must be clean, but also and above all waterproof and covered with materials capable of absorbing liquid materials
  • It must be well ventilated, with openings in all 4 sides of the cage
  • The cage must also be properly closed, using a lock that cannot be opened from the inside
  • Finally, it must bear a label distinguishing the top from the bottom and another indicating that the cage contains a live animal

How much does a Pet Passport India cost?

The cost of a India Pet Passport can vary drastically. The price you pay will depend on the following:

  • Your home country
  • Where you are traveling to
  • The veterinary clinic that you visit
  • The species of your pet
  • Whether your pet already has a microchip and rabies vaccination

Firstly, different countries and veterinary clinics will have different prices for veterinary treatments and vaccinations. If you want to save some money, check the prices of a few different veterinary clinics.

Furthermore, different countries have different requirements for importing pets.

Additionally, some pets species may require more treatments and vaccines than others. For example, dogs require more vaccinations than cats, when traveling to India. Alternatively, rodents, rabbits, reptiles and amphibians do not require any vaccinations.

If your pet already has a microchip, and a recent rabies vaccination, you will probably pay less for your India pet passport. Generally, a microchip and rabies vaccination both costs between $20-60 each, in the USA.

How long does it take to get a Pet Passport India?

It may take up around 1 month to get your pet an India pet passport to import a pet to India .

Getting your pet’s microchip, vaccinations and health certificate shouldn’t take long, just a quick appointment at the vet. However, you will need to wait at least 30 days after getting your pet’s rabies vaccination, before you can enter India.

Furthermore, you will need to apply for a NOC, which must be obtained in person in India. The certificate generally takes 5 working days to obtain, however it can take longer.

To save time, when making an appointment be sure to advise the veterinarian staff that you want to get a pet passport. This will ensure that they have everything required in stock and will allow them time to prepare.

To export a pet from India , it may take you longer than a day to get your complete pet passport.

Different countries have different requirements for importation of pets, so the time depends on where you are traveling to. For example, if you are traveling to a country that requires a rabies titer test (rabies blood test), the process will take longer. In these cases, you should allow yourself at least 4 months to prepare. This is because you must wait 30 days after your pet’s rabies vaccination to have their blood sample taken. Once you have your results back, you must then wait an additional 3 months before your pet is permitted to travel.

Give your veterinary clinic a call to confirm roughly how long it will take them based on where you are going.

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]

The same requirements apply to dogs or cats that originated from India. Thus, your dog or cat will need a microchip, proof of current rabies vaccination, a health certificate, and licenses.

An EU Pet Passport permits pets to travel to EU countries and listed non-EU countries without having to face quarantine. India is not listed as a country that accepts EU pet passports, however as long as your pet's rabies vaccinations are up to date, you can use an EU Pet Passport. You will just require additional documents, such as a NOC.

Yes, however they must be older than 4 months old. Dogs and cats under the age of 3 months are not permitted to enter India. Additionally, your dog or cat will need a rabies vaccination, after which you will need to wait 30 days before entering India.

Can I relocate to India with my pet?

Yes, many people relocate to India each year. As long as you follow the guidelines above then moving to India with a pet should be simple. This means, making sure that your pet has any required vaccinations and has all the documents required to enter India.

Obtaining an India pet passport to bring your pet to India can be a little complicated. Firstly, your pet (dogs and cats) will require a microchip. They will also need a valid rabies vaccination, one that has been administered between 30 days and 1 year prior to entering India, and a health certificate. Pet species other than dogs and cats will not require microchipping or a rabies vaccination, however they will require a DGTF certificate or license. All pets will also require a NOC. This is the complicated part, as a NOC will need to be applied for in person, in India. Therefore, you may need to hire an agent to complete this part for you.

When organising travel, ensure that your chosen airline allows your pet to fly on their planes. Different airlines have different pet policies, some may allow your pet to travel with you in the cabin, where others will only allow pets in the cargo area.

Quarantine in India is not common, however if your pet is shown to have any signs of disease upon clinical inspection, they will be quarantined for up to 30 days.

If you are exporting a pet from India to another country, the requirements vary a lot as each country has its own entry requirements. However, it is likely that your pet will need a microchip, rabies vaccination and health certificate.

Rules for Carriage of Pets

What is air india’s pet policy.

We allow passengers to travel with their domestic pets on board our domestic and select international flights in the passenger cabin or the aircraft hold as baggage (cargo compartment), subject to approvals by Air India.

Which domestic pets are allowed as PETC (Pets in Cabin)?

Currently, only domestic dogs and cats are allowed in the cabin on Air India flights.

Are there any travel restrictions on any specific breed of dogs and cats?

We allow only domesticated dogs and cats aboard our flights. All breeds of dogs and cats are permitted to fly with Air India in the cabin. However, some breeds of dogs and cats, such as brachycephalic (snub-nosed/flat-faced), may be at risk of flying in the cargo compartment and are not allowed to be carried in the cargo compartment of Air India flights. If you choose to take at-risk breeds of dogs and cats in the cabin, please seek the advice of your vet. Air India shall not be liable in this regard.

What is the maximum permissible weight for my pet to travel in the cabin?

The combined weight of the pet and the container must be at most 7 kg/15 lb. Pets of heavier weight will be carried in the aircraft hold (cargo compartment).

When does my pet need to be transported to the aircraft hold?

If your pet weighs more than 7 kg/15 lb, then it must be transported in the aircraft hold (cargo compartment) of the aircraft as baggage if the combined weight of the pet and the container is up to 32 kg/70 lb.

How can I make a booking if I am travelling with a pet?

You can book your pets in the cabin (up to 7 kg/15 lb) or in the cargo compartment as baggage (up to 32 kg/70 lb) through the airline ticketing office or at our check-in counters at the airport. Please ensure you make the booking at least 72 hours before departure and have all the required paperwork with you. If you have any questions, please reach out to our  customer service portal .

What are the charges for the carriage of pets?

Standard excess baggage charges by weight/piece will be applied, regardless of whether free baggage allowance is utilised or not.

Carriage of pets, including container/pet carrier weight, shall not be included in the free baggage allowance.

The weight of the pet, plus a container or pet carrier (also food carried per container/per carrier in case carried as baggage), will be charged.

For connecting flights, standard excess baggage charges by weight/piece will be applied for each segment of your journey, regardless of whether the free baggage allowance is utilised. You will be required to pay at your origin for all segments of your trip.

A trained guide dog meeting Air India’s requirements and regulations of the destination country is carried free of charge if the dog is trained to assist a passenger with impaired vision/hearing.

Are there any seating restrictions if I am travelling with my pet?

Passengers with PETC will be assigned a seat in the last row of the booked cabin class. If you are travelling with a pet on a single cabin configuration (all-economy flight), one passenger and their accompanying pet will be assigned the last row, and the other will be at least five rows apart.

The pet will not be allowed to occupy a passenger seat, even in case the adjoining seat is unoccupied or blocked by the passengers.

Emergency exit rows are not assigned to the passenger and their accompanying pet.

The decision to allot a seat will solely be at the discretion of Air India.

What documentation and vaccination certificates do I need to carry while travelling with my pet?

Properly validated vaccination and health certificates must be furnished, at most 72 hours before the date of travel, from the sanitation department (duly signed and stamped) advising that the animal is in good health. A certificate that the animal has been inoculated for rabies by a registered veterinarian is required. You must hold entry permits and other documents, as required by the countries of entry or transit. Please bring the original documents along with a photocopy to be submitted at the time of check-in at airports.

For more details, please visit  AQCS  ,  US CDC  ,  IATA Program & Policy

Where can I refer for destination-specific regulations and documents required while travelling with my pet?

For destination-specific regulations and documents required for pet travel, please refer to  IATA Travel Centre .

Due to specific destination restrictions and operational reasons, we are currently unable to transport your pet into or out of the destinations below in the cabin and/ or the cargo hold:

United Arab Emirates

United Kingdom

For more information, please reach out to our  customer support executive  or head to our airport or city  ticketing office .

Can I book a connecting flight while travelling with my pet?

We allow pets on direct, transit, and connecting flights, provided the connecting flights are between Air India flights only (AI - AI) and not with other airlines. This applies to routes where pets are currently accepted.

Is there an age restriction to carry pets on board?

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to travel in the cabin and 3 months or older to travel in the cargo hold.

Are pregnant pets allowed to travel?

Pregnant pets are not accepted on Air India flights. Also, passengers are required to advise if their pet has given birth in the last 48 hours.

What are the mandatory requirements for pet travel?

Apart from the weight restrictions on pets, the following conditions must also be met:

  • Your pet can only be brought into the cabin only if it weighs less than 7 kg/15 lb.
  • A pet dog must be muzzled and on a leash in flight.
  • A moisture-absorbent mat should be placed under the pet. Please carry enough absorbent mats for the pet to relieve itself during carriage.
  • When soiled, we request you to dispose of it and replace it with a new one.
  • A label indicating the name of the pet must be affixed on the kennel/pet carrier.
  • No food items are permitted inside the container.
  • Each container must have only one pet inside it during carriage.

Pets in the aircraft hold (cargo compartment) can weigh only a maximum of 32 kg/70 lb. The pet must be free from clinical signs and symptoms of infectious and contagious diseases, including distemper, leptospirosis, etc.

  • The names, addresses, telephone numbers and 24-hour contact details must be affixed to the container.

What are the container requirements for the carriage of pets?

  • The design and construction of the pet container must conform to  IATA standards .
  • The maximum permissible side of the container for carriage of pets in the cabin is 18” X 18” X 12”.
  • It must be of the right size for the pet to turn, stand up, sit, and lie down in its natural position.
  • Well-ventilated from at least three sides with majority ventilation on the upper part of the container, and the ventilation holes must not be taped over or blocked in any way for sufficient airflow to circulate through the container. The ventilated area must be at least 16% of the total surface of the four sides of the container.
  • Be made of a strong required material that is leak-proof and cannot be easily destroyed by the animal inside it, protecting the pet from unauthorised access.
  • Be securely fastened to prevent the pet from escaping.
  • Have means of access to the container for water and food from outside.
  • All wheels must be removed or rendered inoperable.
  • When calculating the minimum internal height of the container, the height of bedding should be added to the height of the animal.

Animal measurements:

pets-height

A = length of the animal from the tip of the nose to the base/root of the tail.

B = height from ground to elbow joint.

C = width across shoulders or widest point (whichever is the greater).

D = height of the animal in natural standing position from the top of the head or the ear tip to the floor (whichever is higher).

The calculated dimensions are internal container dimensions. Minimum internal container dimensions for a single animal:

Container length = A + ½ B

Container width = C x 2

Container height E = D + bedding

Visit   IATA  for more information.

Are emotional support animals allowed to travel?

No, emotional support animals are not allowed on Air India flights.

When can I book my pet to travel with me?

The booking must be made at least 72 hours before departure for the carriage of pets in the cabin or in the aircraft hold (cargo compartment).

What is the ideal reporting time at airports for smooth check-in procedures when travelling with pets?

Passengers must report at least three hours prior to departure for their flight.

How many pets can one passenger carry?

Each passenger can carry one pet in the cabin and one in the cargo hold as baggage.

Are there any limitations on the passenger type?

Unaccompanied minors cannot travel with a pet.

Due to safety considerations, it is not recommended that a passenger requiring wheelchair assistance or travelling with an infant carry a pet in the cabin. However, the pet may be carried in the cargo hold.

How many pets are allowed per flight in the cabin?

Air India allows only two pets per flight in the cabin. Each pet must have an accompanying passenger.

Should I sedate or cloak my pet?

Please refrain from sedating your pet before the health assessment before departure. This is to ensure that the pet is fit to travel. It is important to note that sedated or tranquillised pets are not recommended for flight acceptance, according to IATA standards and regulations. This is because it can be dangerous to their health due to pressure differences.

Is it necessary to fill out any indemnity form before my travel?

Before travelling, download and fill in the indemnity form . Check-in at the airport with the original document and a photocopy.

For direct flights, fill out and carry two copies of the indemnity form.

For connecting flights, please carry two copies of the indemnity form for each segment of your journey, i.e., a total of four indemnity forms.

While carrying a pet in the cabin, can I hold the pet in my hand?

No, your pet must always be in the container and placed under the seat in front of you.

Under what circumstances can I be refused to travel with my pet?

The pet can be refused carriage due to any of the following reasons:

  • Pets with incomplete or missing vaccinations, health certificates or any other document as required by the country of departure or arrival.
  • If, due to safety reasons, the container is not suitable for transportation.
  • Pets showing disruptive behaviour, which includes but is not limited to aggression or of an overtly aggressive nature, showing excessive signs of chewing, cage destruction, barking, or biting.

Air India is entirely indemnified against all direct and indirect liabilities that may arise from the carriage of any pet and is not responsible if such pets are refused entry into or transit through any country or territory.

How will my pet be handed over to me if it is booked in the aircraft hold (cargo compartment) and I am on the same flight?

If you are on the same flight, the pet booked as baggage in the aircraft hold (cargo compartment) will be handed over to you at the arrival terminal.

What happens if a fellow passenger is uncomfortable with my pet?

Do passengers with pets get priority check-in or boarding?

Yes, passengers travelling with pets will be allowed to check in and board on priority.

How to apply for a pet passport in India to travel abroad

Whether you are planning on travelling with a pet to or from india, there are strict rules that apply..

Listen to Story

How to apply for pet passport in India for travelling abroad

Securing a pet passport is a crucial step when planning to travel abroad with your cherished furry companion, ensuring a trouble-free journey. In India, the process of obtaining a pet passport entails a series of essential yet straightforward procedures. This comprehensive guide will lead you through the mandatory steps, which include verifying your pet's up-to-date vaccinations and completing the required documentation.

By following these instructions, you can facilitate your four-legged friend's seamless participation in your international adventures.

WHAT IS AN INDIAN PET PASSPORT?

India does not issue an official 'Pet Passport,' though the term is commonly used to refer to the necessary documents for travelling to and from India with a pet. These documents are essential for customs officials to clear your pet for travel.

The primary purpose of a pet passport is to confirm that your pet is in good health for the journey, often negating the need for lengthy quarantine periods. Typically, an India Pet Passport comprises a microchip, rabies vaccination record, health certificate, and a no objection certificate (NOC).

If you intend to export pets from India, additional vaccinations and documents may be necessary, as import requirements vary by destination.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

  • Rabies Vaccination
  • Additional vaccinations – e.g. distemper, parainfluenza, leptospirosis, parvovirus, bordetella, hepatitis
  • Health certificate
  • Permits & licenses
  • CITES permit

GUIDELINES FOR PET CARRIERS:

  • The cage must not have wheels.
  • It must have a solid roof.
  • The screws and nuts that hold the lower and upper parts of the cage must be properly installed and tightened – because yes, the cage must consist of two sections, made of solid and rigid plastic.
  • The cage must also include bowls firmly attached to its lower wall containing food and water.
  • It must be clean, but also and above all waterproof and covered with materials capable of absorbing liquid materials.
  • It must be well-ventilated, with openings in all 4 sides of the cage.
  • The cage must also be properly closed, using a lock that cannot be opened from the inside.
  • Finally, it must bear a label distinguishing the top from the bottom and another indicating that the cage contains a live animal.

DURATION TO GET A PET TRANSPORT:

Arranging your pet's microchip implantation, vaccinations, and health certificate typically involves a brief visit to the veterinarian. However, it's important to note that after your pet's rabies vaccination, you must wait a minimum of 30 days before entering India.

Additionally, securing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) is imperative, and this must be acquired in person within India. Normally, the certificate can be obtained in about 5 working days, although there may be variations in processing times.

To expedite the process, it's advisable to inform the veterinary clinic in advance when scheduling your appointment that you intend to acquire a pet passport. This ensures that they have all the necessary supplies in stock and allows them ample time for preparation. All you need to know about international pet transport to India

Pet travel to India is a long process and involves extensive documentation. There are several steps to the process, and it is crucial to follow every step for your pet to fly to India. Since the pet import process to India is long and complicated, partnering with an experienced pet travel partner can help make it easier and less stressful.

Indian pet import regulations state that only two pets can travel per pet parent. If you are planning to travel to India with your pet dog or cat, here are the pet import regulations you must follow:

All pet dogs and cats travelling to India need a 15-digit ISO-compliant non-encrypted microchip implanted under the skin. The microchip has a unique identification number used by airlines and customs officials to identify your pet. The microchip number has to be recorded on all your pet’s documents. Make sure the microchip is implanted before your pet receives their vaccinations and other health tests.

Vaccinations

Pet dogs and cats travelling to India must be fully vaccinated against rabies and other common pet diseases. The vaccinations must be administered more than 30 days and less than 365 days from the date of the journey. They must be valid and given according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Dogs – Pet dogs travelling to India must be vaccinated against rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus, Leishmaniasis and leptospirosis .
  • Cats – Pet cats travelling to India must have valid vaccinations against rabies, distemper, feline enteritis, feline panleukopenia and FVRCP.

All vaccinations must be recorded in the pet’s official health certificate with the microchip number and other information such as date of immunisation, batch number, manufacturer, etc. Pet dogs and cats travelling to India do not need a rabies neutralising antibody test (RNATT).

Documentation for pet travel to India

International pet travel to India is complex because of the amount of documentation involved in the process. An experienced pet relocation agent can help ensure you have all the correct documentation to transport your pet to India. These are the required documents for your pet to fly to India:

  • No objection certificate (NOC) – The NOC is issued by the quarantine officer at the Animal quarantine station in India.
  • Veterinary health certificate – The certificate must be in the prescribed format with the following details: pet parent information, pet description including breed, colour, age and microchip number, country of origin, and health treatment and vaccination details.
  • Pet pictures – Three photos of your pet from the front, side and full body
  • Pet vaccination record – Original vaccination records of your pet dog or cat.
  • Pet parent and spouse passport – Cover to cover scan.
  • Marriage certificate – If the pet is travelling in the spouse’s name
  • Short visit stay record – A spreadsheet listing all countries visited in the last two years with arrival date, departure date and the total number of days of travel.
  • Employee contract – Both from the country of origin and India on the company letterhead
  • Utility bills – Electric, water or telephone bills for the last two years
  • Work visa letter request from the employer – A copy of the letter
  • Work visa or OCI card .
  • Quarantine declaration form
  • FRRO permit for foreigners
  • Employment start date letter – A letter on the company letterhead stating when the employee commences work in India.
  • Bill of lading – Copy of the airway bill for your household goods provided by your moving company
  • Proof of residence in India – Rental/lease or hotel information
  • Airline reservation – A copy of your flight ticket
  • Boarding pass and India entry immigration stamp – A copy of your boarding pass and a copy of the stamp to show you have entered India for the customs clearance of your pet.

Arriving in India with your pet

Flying into India with your pet is not as simple as booking a flight into the country. A pet travel agent can help with the customs clearance of your pet and make the process easy and stress-free. Here’s what you need to remember when your pets arrive in India:

  • Only two pets are allowed to travel into the country per family. If you want to travel with other pets, you will have to apply for an exception ruling before travel.
  • Pet ownership is determined by the name in the pet parent’s passport, and the same name must appear on all the pet’s documents.
  • Pets must arrive after 30 days of the pet parent’s arrival in India.
  • Foreigners need an FRRO permit upon arrival, which is required to apply for the NOC for the pet. The pet parent’s passport is also required to apply for the NOC, which is the first permission to bring the pet to India.
  • Pet dogs and cats must arrive at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. Pets must fly in only on weekdays between 5 am and 12 noon. Do not book your pets on a weekend flight, as pets might be held at the airport until the following Monday. Arriving on public holidays is not recommended for the same reason.

Pet quarantine in India

The quarantine officer will examine all pet dogs and cats as they enter the country. If the pet’s documentation is in order and the pet does not show any sign of illness, they will not be quarantined.

If the pet dog or cat shows signs of illness, they will be moved into a quarantine centre for further testing at the pet parent’s expense. It is rare for a pet to be quarantined upon arrival in India; pets arriving into the country are usually advised home quarantine for 30 days.

Pet transport to India

International pet transport to India is complicated, especially since the pet parent must submit a considerable amount of documentation before the pet can travel to the country. The rules are many, and the procedure is lengthy; therefore, it is advisable to partner with an IPATA-accredited pet transport agent to help with the relocation.

If you plan to travel to India with your pet dog or cat, reach out to Petraveller for a free pet travel quote and a stress-free , door-to-door pet relocation experience.

IMPORTING TO INDIA

Home  >  importing to india, transporting pets – importing pets to india.

Transporting pets – Importing pets to India requires careful planning and adherence to specific procedures. Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth transition for your furry companion:

pet travel to india

Step 1:  Start Early

Initiate the pet relocation process at least 3-4 months before the intended travel date to allow sufficient time for all required preparations. India has certain regulations that pet parents have to qualify before importing a pet.

Category A – Baggage Rule for Pet Import:   To bring your pets under this rule, ensure the following conditions are met:

  • The owner must have continuously resided abroad for a minimum of two years before entering India.
  • The total duration of short visits to India preceding the entry date should not exceed 180 days.
  • Qualifications include transferring residence to India (for Indian Nationals) or arriving into India on a work permit (for expats).

Additionally :

  • Pets can enter India only after 30 days of Rabies and DHLP/FRCP vaccination.
  • India recognizes only annual vaccinations; in the case of 3-year vaccinations, only the first year is considered.
  • Families are limited to bringing in a maximum of two pets.
  • If the pet arrives as ‘Manifest Cargo, they must do so within 30 days of the owner’s landing in India.

Category B – DGFT License for Pet Import:  For those not meeting baggage rule criteria, a DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) license is required for short visits, importing for R&D, Defence, Police, and other similar cases.

Category C – Re-Import of Pets:  If your pet previously travelled from India, proof of past certification from the Government AQCS authority is essential for identification and categorization under Re-import.

Accurately measure your pet and acquire an IATA-specified crate. We recommend trusted brands such as  Petmate, Varipet, or SkyKennel.

Ensure your pet becomes familiar with the travel crate. Refer to our crate training document  HERE  for helpful tips.

Insert an ISO 11784/785 microchip with 15 digits before Rabies vaccination

Administer Anti-Rabies and Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus (DHLPP) vaccines for dogs. Cats should receive Anti-Rabies and Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia (FRCP) vaccines. Ensure validity at the time of export, with vaccinations administered no less than 30 days before export. Bordetella and Corona are recommended for added protection during travel.

In-Cabin/Accompanied Baggage:  Pets travel with the parent in the same flight, either In-Cabin or in the cargo hold based on airline regulations.

Manifest Cargo:   Pets travel alone as cargo on a passenger or freighter flight.

Choose the right airline based on routing, layovers, time of travel, and weather conditions, considering the pet’s breed, size and crate dimensions. Discuss with airlines or a pet relocator to book the pet’s space.

Within 8-10 days before travel, have a veterinarian issue and endorse essential documents, including a Health and Fitness certificate, , Microchip Certificate, Sterilization certificate, and External/Internal Parasite Treatment Certificate & the India specific Animal Health certificate for import of dog/cat into India – Annexure 1.1.1 / Annexure 2.1.1

Schedule an appointment with the  full-time Government Official Veterinarian from the exporting country, not a local veterinarian. They will issue a veterinary health Certificate for export and endorse the India specific certificate. It should be obtained & submitted to AQCS 8-10 days prior to travel. Once approved, you can anticipate obtaining the advance NOC within a day or two

It is recommend to have these documents readily available on arrival for the customs authorities to check eligibility to import your pet into India.

  • Resignation acceptance Letter from the previous company plus Offer Letter from the new Indian company (if available) for change in companies
  • Letter of Assignment to India, explicitly indicating your relocation for work within the same company. (For Expats)
  • An experience letter from your employer for having worked abroad for the last two years and more.
  • Within the past two years, if you have made short visits to India, provide the dates and the duration of your stay in India. Please note the total number of short trips to India (If any) preceding the date of entry into India should  not  exceed 180 days
  • Evidence of Household Goods Shipment. Provide a copy of the Bill of Lading/Air Waybill confirming the transportation of your household goods

About Us

  • Home ›   Imports of Pet Animal

The website of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, Government of India ( www.cbec.gov.in/cae1-english.htm ) states the following for importing pets into India:

IMPORT OF PET ANIMALS

“Domestic pets like dogs, cats, birds etc. are permitted to be imported. Import of pets (dog and cat only) upto two numbers per passenger are allowed at one time subject to production of required health certificate from country of origin and examination of the said pets by the concerned quarantine officer.

Imports of pets over and above this quantity shall be allowed only against an Import sanitary permit issued by the Department of Animal Husbandry and dairying or against an import license issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade).”

In the USA, the Rabies vaccine, administered to dogs, carries a validity of three years. The Indian quarantine rules require that the Rabies vaccine administered to the pet is not earlier than one year. Hence, if the vaccine administered in the USA is more than a year old the pet will have to revaccinated for import into India.

The “quarantine officer” mentioned above means a “Government Quarantine Officer/Vet’ concerned who issues certificates for import and export of pets.

Pet Imports and Quarantine in India

Details of the paperwork needed to bring an animal into India, and information on quarantine…

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries oversees the importation of pets into India.

  • To visit its website:  Click here

Animal Quarantine and Certification Service Officers are present at Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata airports to deal with the importation and exportation of pets. See the bottom of the page for  contact details .

Required Documents

Paperwork should be presented on arrival in India to the quarantine officer in customs. Hiring a pet relocator will help with this process.

  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) : These must be obtained from a quarantine centre in India 15 days before importation. The easiest way is to hire a local pet relocator agent to assist with the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service
  • Original veterinary certificate : Dogs must be free from Aujeszky’s Disease, distemper, rabies, leishmaniasis and leptospirosis, while cats must be free from rabies and distemper. Imported pets should also be microchipped
  • Vaccination record : Pets must have a certificate proving that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies. The Indian embassy in Berne, Switzerland, provides the only thorough list of vaccination requirements:  Click here

Sample veterinary certificates can be found on the Jet Airways website.

  • For forms relating to dogs:  Click here
  • For forms relating to cats:  Click here

If the pet is travelling in the  cargo hold , the following documents will be also be required:

  • A copy of the owner/caretaker's passport
  • A copy of the owner/caretaker's e-ticket
  • A copy of the airway bill

India does not generally quarantine pets from countries with no or low incidences of rabies that have been vaccinated from:

  • Dogs : Aujeszky’s disease, distemper, rabies (no fewer than 30 days prior to travel and no more than one year), leishmaniasis and leptospirosis
  • Cats : rabies (no fewer than 30 days prior to travel and no more than one year) and distemper

It is rare for a pet to be quarantined, but when it does happen, it will last for between 30 days and three months.

Pet Travel to India – Complete Guide to Import your pet to India

Travelling with your pet can be a tricky situation. Be it a vacation, job transfer, or relocating due to personal reasons – nationally or internationally, the thought of having your pet as a travel partner could be exciting as well as intimidating. If you are a pet parent and you need to import your pet to India then you must know that pet travel to India is a very long process involving extensive documentation.

Whatever travel mode you choose to travel with your furball be it through airway, waterway, or road – we have done all the hard work to make it easy for you to understand pet travel to India. Here, we are providing you with a complete guide that includes everything that you need to know about travelling to India with your pet.

The process of importing your pet to India involves a lot of preparations and considerations. According to the Indian pet import rules & regulations, only two pets can travel to India per pet parent. If you are planning to import your pet to India then you must first be aware of all the pet import regulations.

How to import pets to India? – DGFT Guidelines

Pets are now considered to be an integral part of the household. The Indian government allows the import of pets similar to other imports. But, it has some very specific rules & regulations that the pet-parents must follow to bring their pets to India.

While travelling to India, your pet must have a 15-digit compliant non-encrypted microchip implemented under their skin. This microchip for pets comes with a unique identification number that is used by airlines and customs officials to recognize your pet.

The number mentioned in the microchip must be included in all the documents of your pet. Also, you must remember to get the microchip of your pets before taking them for vaccination and all the other health tests are mandatory for travelling.

Vaccinations

Before pet travel, you must take your pets for vaccination against all the common pet diseases. The vaccinations of your pets should be administered for more than 30 days and within 365 days from the journey date. All the vaccination details are required to be mentioned in the official health certificate of your pet along with the microchip number and other important details needed for travelling.

In the case of dogs travelling to India, they must be vaccinated against the diseases like rabies, leptospirosis, parvovirus, etc.

In the case of cats, they must be vaccinated against the diseases such as distemper, feline enteritis, rabies, etc.

A certificate of proper veterinary inspection

It is mandatory to obtain a veterinary inspection certificate from the exporting country. A veterinary inspection certificate is a form filled by an accredited veterinarian which is used to verify the general good health of your pet. It is also commonly known as a health certificate.

Transfer residence of pets

There are two types of transfer residence in India for the import of pets –

Permanent imports

Permanent imports usually happen when the pets are being imported to stay in the place for a very long time. Permanent imports can be of two types depending on the period of import.

Permanent import of two pets

In such cases, pet travel to India is permitted as passenger baggage without any DGFT authorization. It is only applied to individuals transferring their residence to India after two continuous of staying in a foreign country. But, only cats and dogs are permitted to be imported under such baggage rules.

However, DGFT import authorization is mandatory if:

  • The period of stay in a foreign country is less than two years
  • Your pet is not being imported as a passenger baggage
  • The pet is not applicable to fall under the baggage rules

Permanent import of more than two pets

In the case of importing more than two pets from abroad to India, the rules mentioned below are to be followed.

While importing more than two pets, it is mandatory to get import authorization from DGFT.

The pet parent must submit applications before the grant of an import authorization for examinations that would be based on the justifications and supporting documents to DAH&D.

Documents required for permanent pet travel to India

  • You must have your pet’s vaccination book/pet passport/pet book.
  • Passport of your pet

Temporary import or short stays

If your pets are being imported to India for a short period then it would be considered a short stay. In such cases, you will need import authorization from DGFT to import your pets to the country. Also, you will have to apply for examinations that are to be based on the justifications and relevant documents to DAH&D.

Documents required for short stays

  • You will require having your pet’s vaccination book/pet passport/pet book
  • Certificate for emotional support
  • Your pet’s passport
  • You need to have a copy of the return ticket
  • Undertaking

When to apply for Import Authorization for your pet travel to India?

The pet parents flying to India are advised to proceed with filing the import authorization application at least two months before their trip. Also, you must remember that any applications related to trading or breeding purposes shall be directly rejected. The same applies to the applications made on behalf of some other person.

Mode of pet imports

You can import pet animals through manifest cargo or passenger baggage.

Passenger baggage – This is a system where the pet is the travel partner of its owner. The pet-parent books their pet as ‘excess, checked, or accompanied baggage’. For travelling as passenger baggage, your pet must have all their travel details along with all the other important documents. The pet parent needs to have the ticket that they used for the journey.

Moreover, it needs to be supported with any document that proves the continuous stay in a foreign country for a minimum of two years. The pet parent must also have proof of transferring the residence to India.

Manifest cargo – Through this system, you can import your pet to India through airline cargo. If you are importing your pet by using this method, then make sure that it includes all the required import documents such as a copy of the passport of the owner, their e-tickets, and one copy of the bill of your flight.

The pets can only be imported to specifically designated airports in India. The airports where you can import pets are –

Once you import your pets to India, the quarantine officers will examine them thoroughly. If your pet’s documentation is clear and they do not show any sign of sickness, they will not be quarantined. But in case your pet shows some sign of illness then they will be taken to the pet quarantine centres for further health checkups. In such cases, pets are usually given home quarantine for a maximum of 30 days.

For endearing pet lovers, it is difficult to leave their pets alone. And when you are travelling back to India from a foreign country along with your pet, the process gets way too complicated as it requires you to submit a considerable amount of documentation. Therefore, through this blog, we are intended to help pet parents with all the important guidelines for pet travel.

The main airline for transporting pets to India from the UK is British Airways.

We mentioned that the country has strict rules and regulations to be followed when transporting your pets from the UK. First off, you are only allowed to bring up to one pet per person with you from the UK. Your pets must have a signed health certificate showing their up-to-date vaccinations and especially a rabies vaccine. Your pet must be microchipped.

The pre travel veterinary requirements are quite particular for India pet travel. An official veterinarian in UK needs to complete a pre certificate around 5-7 days before the flight from the UK to India. This then needs to go to the Indian authorities (usually via an agent on the ground) who will then issue an NOC (No Objection Certificate) – which is the Indian version of an import permit. Then the pets must have another vet check within 48 hours of the flight date and final export paperwork completed and it is this paperwork which travels with the pets.

On entering to India from the UK, your pets may have to quarantine for 14 days depending on your pet’s health. However, if all the pre-requisites have been met then you will be asked to home quarantine instead. Quarantine is an unlikely occurrence when you transport your pets with a professional agent.

The airline is very particular on the crate/kennel size you transport your pets in. The crate must be soft and ventilated, but not exceeding a certain size. If being transported in the cabin, the crate must not weigh more than 5kg, but this can be exceeded in the hold. The crate must have an absorbent pad inside and the crate be labelled with the pet’s name.

This amount of information can be overwhelming for pet owners when looking to transport their pets to India from the UK. But PetAir are here to help you with every step of the journey for your India pet travel. We can take care of getting the correct paperwork, securing the best flight routes and working with the agent in India.

Keep a photocopy of your passport and consider carrying other ID – this will help in the unfortunate event you lose your passport when you’re travelling.

Arrange travel insurance before you go and keep the policy documents with you.

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

Protect your trip: Search, compare and buy the best travel insurance plans for the lowest price. Get a quote .

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

Each piece of luggage is evaluated by experts in the Lab as well as consumer testers on the go. In the Lab, we look at factors like durability, ease of use and more. We also pack each suitcase with a standard load to see how much it can hold and how easy the compartments are to access. Consumer testers come into the Lab to use the luggage in an obstacle course, where they weigh in on handle comfort, wheel performance, maneuverability and more. Finally, we send luggage out with travelers into the real world for firsthand feedback.

You can learn more about how we test luggage and what to consider as you shop — including how to decide between hardside and softside luggage — but first, here's everything you need to know about our top-tested luggage brands.

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years.

In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze , thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models include the Freeform hardside (pictured here), the Solyte DLX softside and the Stryde Glyder , which is a checked case that's wide instead of tall so it's less likely to tip over.

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are a lot of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Between the designs and versatile offerings, the models are fun, functional and especially ideal for vacationers.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces. Pictured here is the Pop Max Softside set , which at $150 for a set of three, is less than other single cases.

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it actually lives up to its hype. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on.

It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more) and a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper). We also love the brand's Everywhere Bag , which is a stylish and surprisingly spacious weekender.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner (pictured here in the 21-inch version) has been a selected as GH Family Travel Award winner for the past two years after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric also aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure their products will hold up, and though the luggage might not the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We were impressed with its hardside 20-inch spinner carry-on (pictured here) when we tested it on our Lab. Our analysts found it to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, consumer testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This style also comes in two other sizes (24 and 28 inches) and can be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests, thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

The hardside cases have earned high scores in our tests — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — but we also love the softside Legend collection (pictured here), which is made of durable tweed fabric and leather trim.

This fashionable yet functional travel brand was founded by actress Shay Mitchell and incorporates smart features designed to make traveling easier. It also has a stunning aesthetic, including monochromatic color schemes in which the handles and hardware match the case.

Pictured here is the Carry-On Roller, its best-selling case that comes in a range of neutral and fun hues. It was spacious for packing and easy to maneuver in our tests, and though it did scuff during use, it resisted dents well during our Lab's drop tests. Another popular style is its Mini Weekender , which can be used as a personal item that fits underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

a photo of the beis carry on luggage and beis weekender bag

The Béis carry-on and compact weekender bag being used as a travel set.

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers.

The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage (pictured here) stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair tradeoff for the top-of-the-line features.

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art (like Britto, shown here), making your suitcase a playful yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease-of-use scores.

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on (pictured here) was one of our testers' favorites; they especially loved the easy-to-use telescopic handle and metallic color. We also found it to be easy to pack and though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.

Tumi

Rolling TUMI luggage through the airport is like a status symbol; the brand is highly recognized for its upscale products for both business and leisure travelers.

In addition to its suitcases , it makes accessories like briefcases and backpacks and has components that make traveling easier, like an anti-slip strap on carrying bags and an extra hook on rolling bags so you can wheel multiple items at once. On top of that, the brand stands out for its unique service offerings, like repairs and luggage registration to help you find lost bags.

We especially love Tumi's Alpha collection (pictured here is the Alpha carry-on ) with its durable materials and removable garment sleeve. One GH analyst who has been using a backpack in this collection appreciates that it fits more than you'd expect and has a versatile design for travel, work and beyond.

L.L.Bean

If you’re going away for weeks or just have lots to pack, L.L.Bean’s duffels are roomy enough to stuff in everything you need. There are options with or without wheels and lots of sizes to choose from (the Adventure Rolling Duffel , shown here, is incredibly durable and one of our go-to picks for vacations with kids).

The flexible shape of the duffel also allows it to store easily under your bed, so it’s perfect for college students or anyone tight on storage space. It’s also made of sturdy, water-resistant nylon fabric that's made to last no matter where your travels take you — in fact, one of our experts says it's lasted for years without signs of wear. She does note that it's a little more cumbersome to pull than four-wheel spinner luggage and it's spaciousness makes it easy to go over the 50-pound weight limit for airlines, but says it's perfect for packing for two kids.

Monos

Monos says its design philosophy is "less is more," — meaning the bags are made to be simple and timeless to avoid passing trends and high quality so they can stand the test of time. Most of its hardside bags are entirely polycarbonate, though some combine polycarbonate and aluminum for increased durability. They also have useful packing features like wide compression straps to help you fit more in the case.

The Check-In Large was a winner of last year's GH Family Travel Awards because of its spacious interior and maneuverability. Testers said it was easy to roll and they loved the sleek appearance. It's also worth noting that the brand has a 100-day return period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit.

Eagle Creek

Whether you’re backpacking internationally or exploring a national park, Eagle Creek gives you both the convenience and durability you need in a bag. Some have various compartments so you can stay organized (or store shoes and dirty laundry separately), and some bags have backpack straps if you need to be hands-free.

We especially love the Cargo Hauler Duffel for shorter trips: It’s affordable, spacious, lightweight and folds up into a small pouch for easy storage. For longer getaways, the Migrate Wheeled Duffel (pictured here) is larger and has two wheels with a telescopic handle. It also opens wide so you can easily access the contents.

Election latest: Reform UK overtakes Tories for first time in new poll

Reform UK has overtaken the Tories for the first time in a new YouGov poll carried out for The Times newspaper. Sky polling analyst Will Jennings describes it as a "moment of huge danger" for the Conservative Party.

Thanks for joining us on another manifesto packed day!

Unveiling his party's manifesto, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he was offering a "credible" long-term plan to "rebuild our country" if Labour win the election on 4 July.

In an interview  with Sky's political editor  Beth Rigby , he said he "rejects the argument" tax rises are required to rebuild public services - as he insisted there will be "no return to austerity" under a Labour government.

We also saw Plaid Cymru launch its manifesto today, which had "fair funding" in Wales at its core.

To get an overview of how the party manifestos are shaping up so far, head over to our manifesto checker here:

And then there was a landmark poll to end the evening. Reform UK has overtaken the Conservatives for the first time, according to a YouGov poll for The Times.

Will Jennings, Sky polling analyst, says the poll "represents a moment of huge danger to the Conservatives".

We are are now pausing coverage for the evening. Join us on the campaign trail again in the morning. Goodnight!

Nigel Farage couldn't have hoped for better news as he strode on to the stage to debate on TV against Penny Mordaunt, Angela Rayner and rivals from the smaller opposition parties.

The dramatic news that his Reform UK party has overtaken the Conservatives in the latest YouGov poll, on 19% to the Tories' 18%, meant he had his trademark letter box grin on his face for virtually the whole debate.

He began by declaring in his opening remarks: "We are now the opposition to Labour!" And he ended by boasting: "I have the courage to take on the mob. Please join the revolt."

Throughout the debate, Mr Farage had a jaunty swagger about him. He laughed and scoffed at the anti-Brexit SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, who was standing next to him, and appeared to relish being in a minority of one against the other smaller parties on Brexit and immigration.

The other story of this debate was round two of the bruising battle between Penny Mordaunt and Angela Rayner over Labour's tax plans, while Ms Mordaunt conspicuously left Mr Farage alone and even engaged in some political flirting with him. Why could that possibly have been?

The Commons leader was relentless in her tax onslaught on Labour, from start to finish. But Labour's deputy leader stood her ground and resolutely stuck to the Starmer-Reeves script, even when Ms Mordaunt issued a direct challenge on whether Labour would raise capital gains tax.

It was not in the Labour manifesto, Ms Rayner insisted, repeating Sir Keir's mantra from earlier in the day. That wasn't not a no, then, Ms Mordaunt replied. Once again, as in last week's first TV clash between the pair, in her tax attack on Labour she was like a stuck record – but it may stick.

But while Ms Mordaunt tore into Ms Rayner relentlessly, she uttered not a word of criticism of Mr Farage. It looked like an indication that the Tories are terrified of him and that the party leadership may eventually buckle and do a deal with him before 4 July.

When it was her turn to ask an opponent a question, after Ms Mordaunt had challenged her on capital gains tax, Labour's deputy leader tackled her: "Would you welcome Nigel Farage into the Conservative Party?"

It was a firecracker of a question and one which the Tory cabinet minister answered so deftly and equivocally that she appeared to be engaging in cosying up to the Reform UK leader – politically speaking, of course! - rather than giving him the cold shoulder.

She told the audience that like Mr Farage she was a Brexiteer and she believed that if you couldn't reform European institutions you should be prepared to leave them. Oh!

That, of course, was a reference to quitting the European Convention of Human Rights, which Tory right-wingers are demanding, and a clear courting of support from Tory MPs in a future leadership bid. Shameless, her Tory critics will complain.

But then she declared: "Nigel is a Labour enabler." Yes, that's the official Tory line, but it wasn't exactly a savage put-down. Note, too, that she called him "Nigel" and not Mr Farage.

Never has a rebuff been delivered with such good grace. She's on leadership manoeuvres, make no mistake. Just like last week, when she said Rishi Sunak was "completely wrong" to leave the D-Day ceremony in Normandy early.

In a peroration towards the end, Mr Farage dismissed Labour and the Conservatives as "mushy SDP parties in the middle", condemned the House of Lords as "an abomination" and a "complete disgrace" because it's full of party donors and backed electoral reform.

It was his night, thanks to the opinion poll. The battle for Number 10 may be a fight between the Conservatives and Labour. But the Tories' war with Reform UK is a fight to the death over the future of the centre-right in British politics.

And, if Mr Farage is correct, it's a battle to become the official opposition to a Labour government after the election on 4 July.

Let's party like it's 1997. That could be the message from Labour's 2024 general election.

Back in '97, the front cover of Labour's manifesto showed a full-page photo of a mean and moody-looking Tony Blair.

The title then was "New Labour, because Britain deserves better" and the campaign song was D-Ream's Things Can Only Get Better.

This year, after 14 years of Conservative rule under five prime ministers, Labour's manifesto has a one-word title - "Change".

But the photo on the front is straight out of the 1997 New Labour playbook: Sir Keir, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, serious - stern, even. Very Tony Blair.

Sir Keir is no Tony Blair, of course. Some Labour veterans compare him to Mr Blair's predecessor, another lawyer, the late John Smith.

And at last week's seven-way election debate including the smaller parties, Nigel Farage dismissed Sir Keir as "Blair without the flair".

Indeed, there's nothing flashy about the contents of the 133-page 2024 manifesto. No big surprises. No big controversies either.

Read more here:

It was Labour's turn to launch its election manifesto today. It was a restatement of the party's main policies, with no surprise announcements in the 133-page document.

Sir Keir Starmer reiterated his key pledges including no new taxes on "working people" and a promise of "economic stability".

Niall Paterson digs into Labour's promise of economic growth with Ed Conway , Sky's economics and data editor , and speaks to political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh , who was at the launch in Manchester.

Plus, John McTernan, political strategist and former political secretary to Tony Blair, discusses the politics of their manifesto and whether it matters that there were no new announcements.

Man of the moment Nigel Farage dismisses Labour and the Conservatives as "mushy SDP".

He says the House of Lords is an "abomination" full of party donors and he wants electoral reform and more referendums. "Scotland?" says Stephen Flynn.

This debate has been fought against the backdrop of the bombshell poll minutes before it began showing Mr Farage's Reform UK ahead of the Conservatives for the first time.

It's a massive turning point in the campaign and Penny Mordaunt's failure to attack Mr Farage during the debate and her apparent flirting with him when Angela Rayner asks if she'd welcome him into the Tory party was highly significant.

Penny Mordaunt has been like a stuck record with her attacks on Labour on tax. But she has indeed stuck at it relentlessly - and perhaps the message will stick.

In the final speeches, Angela Rayner makes a powerful appeal for Labour votes. But Mr Farage then ends as he began with his opinion poll breakthrough, declaring: "I have the courage to take on the mob. Please join the revolt".

The best clash between Penny Mordaunt and Angela Rayner comes when the debaters get the chance to ask an opponent a question.

No surprise, then, that Penny tackles Angela on tax, specifically challenging her to rule out Labour increasing capital gains tax if Labour wins the election.

Labour's deputy leader dutifully sticks to the Starmer-Reeves script: It's not in the Labour manifesto, she says.

Not a no, says Ms Mordaunt.

Then Ms Rayner asks Ms Mordaunt a belter, taunting her: "Would you welcome Nigel Farage into the Conservative Party?"

Her reply is that Mr Farage is a "Labour enabler", but she doesn't actually say No and again she talks about what she and the Reform leader agree about and not what they disagree on.

Penny and Nigel in a bit of political flirting?

By  Jon Craig , chief political correspondent

A shouting match on the NHS doesn't produce a clear winner. Seven loud voices all competing at once! Then it's on to education. No better.

Throughout all this, Nigel Farage repeatedly blames an "exploding population" and he and Penny Mordaunt both attack Angela Rayner on Labour's VAT on private schools. Predictable.

After an ad break the debate moves on to migration and Mr Farage mentions the "population explosion again". He says: "We voted Brexit to reduce the numbers coming in."

To begin with the debate on migration is not a shouting match, despite the politicians' opposing views. The civil exchanges don't last long, however.

Mr Farage is in a minority of one among the smaller parties. Plaid Cymru's Rhun ap Iorwerth accuses him of going on a "dog whistle Tour". Sharp intakes of breath in the spin room.

When the Plaid leader complains about cutting student's family visas, Mr Farage shouts: "Good! Good! You can't bring your mum to university!"

There's a swagger about Mr Farage in this debate. He started by gloating about Reform UK overtaking the Conservatives in a YouGov poll and now he's growing in confidence and relishing at taking on Brexit opponents.

He appears to enjoy being in a minority of one in arguments with the leaders of the other smaller parties on immigration and other Brexit issues.

Penny Mordaunt, meanwhile, keeps coming back to the Tory attack on Labour on tax. She's relentlessly on message on the Tory tax assault on Labour.

No mention yet of Rishi Sunak's D-day fiasco from either the opposition politicians or the audience, so no criticism of the PM either!

The SNP's Stephen Flynn has accused Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner of giving a "shameful" response to a question on Brexit during tonight's ITV leaders' debate.

The seven politicians taking part in the debate were asked if they would seek to rejoin the EU or single market.

"No," Ms Rayner said, saying Labour respected the result of the referendum.

"Shameful, shameful," Mr Flynn could be heard saying.

He later added that his party would "absolutely" seek to rejoin, as did the Greens, Lib Dems and Plaid Cymru.

For the Conservatives, Penny Mordaunt said: "No, and if you have a Labour government they will take you back in, they will tie you on defence, on migration, on regulation, without any of the benefits of membership."

Nigel Farage said: "No, we are free. Unfortunately we are governed incompetently, but at least they are our mistakes and not somebody else's."
