An Ultimate Peak Design Travel Duffel Review (65L & 35L): Perfect for Nomads, Slow Travelers, and Collapsible Storage

When wandering, nomading, and traveling around the world, picking the right luggage can be tough. Backpacks are a comfortable and convenient choice world travel and adventures, perfect when you’re moving frequently and need luggage that is convenient to carry.

But for trips wherein you’re moving less, need more space, and need a more convenient packing approach – whether that is a week vacation at a single spot in Paris, or nomads on the road for months or years based in a single location for weeks at a time.  The Peak Design Travel Duffel is that more convenient approach to packing for travel.

Peak Design Travel Duffel 35L and 65L

Though I loved traveling around the world with only a carry on backpack, I’ve discovered that using a big duffel bag for nomading, and carrying a daypack that doubles as a weekend travel bag is a perfect approach for travelers that have more gear than can fit in a 45 liter backpack, aren’t moving much, and want a more convenient packing option than travel backpacks.

The Peak Design Travel Duffel has proven to be an extremely well designed and well constructed travel duffel, available in the convenient sizes of 35L and 65L, making it a carry option I highly recommend as “expansion storage” (the 35L) or a great main bag for nomads, large enough to comfortably fit their mobile lives (65L) all in an easy enough to carry package.

Read on to discover why the Peak Design Travel Duffel is a perfect setup for vacations and nomads traveling with their lives in a bag.

My Experience Traveling with the Peak Design Travel Duffel: Perfect for Digital Nomads and Long Term travelers, with lots of gear and time in one place

I’ve spent the last 5 years exploring the world in some state of travel – whether in a state of full travel backpacking hitting a country a week with only a carry on backpack, or as a nomad basing in a single city to work (and enjoy) and enjoy for periods while taking short adventures (and a smaller bag) on shorter trips.

For most backpackers, I highly recommend “one bagging” for world travel, carrying a single travel backpack of 45 liters or less that can fit on a plane , to avoid baggage fees, avoid having your checked bags lost in transit (it has happened to me), and discover how much more enjoyable life can be with less. Even if long term travelers aiming to bounce around the world and stack up countries don’t travel with a carry on, a travel backpack is more convenient to carry, for moving quickly, comfortably, and easily through airports, transiting frequently with your luggage, and being ready for the occasionally hiking and trekking adventure.

Why a Duffel Bag is a great option for travel for slow travelers, nomads, and anyone not moving weekly

Not everyone has the flexibility to travel so lightly that all of their belongings fit into a carry on backpack. Additionally, if you don’t need the convenience of how a comfortable backpack carry, then there are massive benefits to choosing a more open, yet weel designed, style of luggage.

In reality, if you are not traveling quickly, and moving accommodation more than once per week or two, and are unlikely to take all of your luggage on a trekking trip, then a good duffel bag, with the addition of a good daypack sized travel pack (like the Peak Design everyday carry sized travel backpack ) is likely a far better travel setup than a backpack.

peak design travel duffel bag

Adding packing cubes to a duffel bag takes a huge, convenient space, that is easier to access than top loading backpacks, and functionally feels much like a dresser with drawers that you can carry over your shoulder, or backpack style for short periods.

peak design travel duffel bag

For digital Nomads , a good duffel bag offers much more space, perfectly appropriate for the additional tech that digital nomads and remote workers carry. Personally, when I am in “digital nomad mode,” the laptop, extra chargers, hard drives, microphones, headphones, and small odds and ends contribute so much to my work that I can’t leave them, but nearly take up a backpack all their own – meaning more space is essential to stay productive and travel comfortably as a nomad. Because, when in my “work phases” I move less often, the benefits of extra space (in a duffel bag) outweigh the benefits of how a backpack is carried.

For long term travelers and Round the World Travelers, choosing a travel friendly duffel allows room for the extra clothes clothing for all climates and occasions (think Bali summers, Patagonian winters, and European fall) and equipment for all adventures (think about your favorite puffy jacket, a very useful sleeping bag, or your favorite retro 35mm camera) that make round the world travel slightly more comfortable and efficient.

To be honest, yes, you could “rent” a sleeping bag in Patagonia, or skip the 35mm camera, but in my experience traveling adventurously – think Laos, Sri Lanka, and Bolivia – the more adventurously you travel, the harder those high quality, niche items will be to find when you’re on the road. After 5 years on the road, I’ve decided it’s much better to take everything you’ll need to be self-reliant on the adventure than arrive and struggle to find that one thing you need.

The moral: You can take something with you and ditch it later, but you can’t find that something if its nowhere around. Going the duffel bag route gives the flexibility to make that choice.

Plus, you can always leave the duffel bag behind on your adventures.

The best adventures when traveling happen on “loops.” Think, traveling the coffee circuit in Colombia, hiking Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, or trekking to Everest Base Camp and Back. This means that you can always leave the larger bag and take a backpack traveling light for your adventures.

This is exactly what I did when I hiked to Everest Base Camp on my own, through Patagonia, and during my first trip in Bali. The first hostels I stayed at were welcoming and happily held my larger bags for me, for a few weeks until I returned.

So, you know that a good duffel bag is actually a great option for travel if you need to carry a little extra gear and won’t be moving as often, but what should you look for in a duffel bag?

More on My experience with the Peak Design Travel Duffel

I’ve taken the duffel on a handful of week long trips with my girlfriend wherein we’ve actually split the bag, using packing cubes, allowing us to travel with a single bag – and it has been great.

Our most recent trip to the cool highlands of Bali to a cabin workcation surrounded by volcanoes was the most trying trip and convinced me this is a great bag.

peak design travel duffel bag

The trip happened all via motorbike, and the size of this bag, plus haul points and durability made it easy to strap to my motorbike, carrying all of the gear we both needed.

peak design travel duffel bag

Not only did the bag handle all of the gear for two people for a week in the cold, but we traveled with the bag strapped to the back of a scooter and had the rain pour on us for an hour of the adventure. Now, sad to say, after an entire hour riding in the rain with the bag completely exposed, a few drops got in and got a couple pair of socks wet. However , I am still very impressed.

peak design travel duffel bag

The outer cloth absorbed absolutely no water and the water that did get in made it through a zipper corner. I tested the bag later and covering the top zipper with a trash bag would have kept everything dry.

peak design travel duffel bag

The functional design (haul points for strapping things down) made it easy to load. Quickly removable handles made carrying the backpack easy for the short periods – to the cabin here, and from ferries to our hotel through the islands.

peak design travel duffel bag

The simple organization and pockets made quick access items accessible inside and out.

This bag is well constructed and built for life. I have overstuffed it, dropped it, and strapped it down abusively and it is showing no signs of wear.

What makes the Peak Design Duffel Bags great travel duffel options

  • Backpack Mode Carry: A double shoulder carry option makes quick transport – through airports, briefly through streets, and on trains – simple and easy via removable padded top handles that double as backpack straps (for full backpack straps, consider the Peak Design Duffle Pack )
  • Comfortable shoulder strap for easy cross-body carry and shoulder carry: Having a removable padded shoulder strap is essential, because you should be able to carry the pack hands free, easily, whenever necessary
  • Removable top hand straps straps allow convenient hand carry for easy carry while wearing a backpack
  • Just big enough for your needs, but not too big: Peak Designs 35L and 65L variants are two great options that will suit the “larger luggage” and “smaller luggage” needs.
  • Water Resistant outer material throughout , with weatherproof 600D nylon canvas shell upper and completely waterproof 900D nylon bottom
  • Tough materials throughout
  • Sturdy yet lightly padded handles with woven nylon straps capable of handling heavier loads
  • Internal pockets for organization and quick access without packing cubes
  • External pockets for quick access to frequently used items

Now a duffel bag can be a great option for most travelers, however, it depends on the bag’s size and how you use it. Luckily, this duffel from Peak Design comes in two perfect sizes 35L and 65L which are respectively great for using as expandable luggage and a weekender bag (for faster paced travelers) or as primary luggage with a backpack on the side.

Let’s dissect the two options.

Peak Design Travel Duffel 35L Variant: Perfect for daily use, weekend trips, and to pair with a travel backpack

The Peak Design Travel Duffel 35l variant is the smaller option that is the perfect addition to a good travel backpack, such as the Peak Design travel backpack , or one of my other favorite carry on travel backpacks . Before I discovered the Peak Design’s smaller duffel bag I traveled with the 32L GORUCK Kit Bag quite the same way as expandable luggage I’d use with my GORUCK GR3 and leave behind on treks and shorter adventures.

The 35L is solid as “expandable luggage” that can be taken on as a carry on for your personal item (or “laptop bag”) in addition to a carry on backpack if you plan the sizes correctly.

Also, when not traveling around the world, this bag’s size, carry, and just the right amount of pockets for storing everyday use items in an organized way make it a great gym bag and perfect for weekend trips when paired with a functional daypack .

If you’re a digital nomad wandering and still want the function of a good travel backpack for long term travel and the extra storage for all of your comforts, air this 35L duffel with a good long term travel friendly backpack .

Peak Design Travel Duffel 65L Variant: A great primary bag to leave at your base for slower, travelers and nomads

If you plan to stay in one place for weeks at a time and occasionally take shorter trips out and then back to your base, the 65 liter Peak Design Duffel will be much better for you.

This bag packs the same durable build, water resistance, organization, and function of the smaller version, but in a package large enough to fit your entire nomadic life.

On my most recent trips, my girlfriend and I actually shared this bag. We simply carried our own laptops in separate daypacks, and both packed enough gear for a whole week in this bag, in an organized way using awesome Peak Design Packing Cubes . This trip was also into cold highlands of Bali, in an area called Bedugul surrounded by volcanoes, and where the weather got down to 60 to 65 degrees (~16 to 19 celsius) in a nearly off grid cabin – so we had to pack warm clothes, portable chargers, books, snacks, and nearly the kitchen sink. It all fit easily in an organized way.

The result was insanely convenient. I’ve decided that for nomading, I will definitely take the Peak Design 65L duffel as my “big bag” and bring a smaller bag for side adventures

Pros of the Peak Design Duffel vs. Other Bags

  • Intuitive design, with pockets, haul points, and handles in all of the right places
  • High quality and durable materials
  • Stylish accents
  • Perfect size for the intended use – not too big, not too small
  • Buy it for life build

Cons of the Peak Design Duffel vs. Other Bags

  • Leather-wrapped webbing handles, which can be used for backpack carry, would become uncomfortable on a long walk (consider the Peak Design Duffle Pack , with full backpack straps and padded hip belt)
  • I wish the bag had two padded shoulder straps for backpack carry
  • You will need to cover the top zipper if leaving the bag in the rain, as the bag’s design does route rainwater to the zipper’s corners

Quick Rating of the Peak Design Travel Duffel

  • Function: 5/5 – Small details and great design make this a very useful and useable bag
  • Travel Readiness: 5/5 – For long term travelers with lots of gear, the organization, size, carry options, and durability make this a great hauler for slower, longer travel
  • Durability and Quality: 5/5 – With excellent materials and construction throughout, the bag feels solid and like it will last a lifetime
  • Price and Value: 4/5 – Not cheap, but worth every penny, this bag is an investment and good value

Overall Rating: 4.75/5

Quick Verdict

For travelers that carry a little extra on their travels, whether nomads carrying lots of tech, or multi-climate adventurers with lots of gear, the Peak Design Travel Duffel is an excellent option for making your travels better and more convenient. Quality, intuitive design and function, and performance make this a bag worth its price tag and that will enhance how comfortably you travel.

Travel Friendliness + Comfort and Carry

Carry-on Compliance: Both the 35L and 65L duffels can be carry ons, if underpacked enough

With the standard carryon limit for most airlines being 22″ x 14″ x 9″, the 35L Peak Design Travel Duffel dimensions 22″ x 14″ x 10” make it a feasible option as a carryon when full packed, but you may need to under pack lightly to get that extra inch.

However, with dimensions of 30″ x 13.4″ x 12.6″, the 65L travel duffel will need to be very underpacked to function as a carry on.

However, both duffles are soft-sided and do not have any rigged frame, thus, could be used as carry on bags for any airline if under packed enough

The aesthetic on this duffle are simultaneously minimalist and timeless. Due to the leather and metal accents, subtle earth tones, and timeless, wear resistant materials (webbing, heathered patterned woven nylon), this bag is quite muted and stylish in an understated sense.

Due to its all around minimalist design, the aesthetic is almost timeless, and could very easily pass for a bag from 40 years ago or (possibly) 40 years from now, looking good in any time.

Thanks to that minimalist, function focused design and intentionally using high quality materials, Peak Design created a great looking bag that will still be regarded as a good looking bag a long time down the road.

Materials, Craftsmanship, and Durability

Everything on this bag, from the webbing in the straps, to the metal zipper pulls, to the thick fabric and hooks, feels very sturdy to the touch – in general quality and how its all stitched together. Additionally, using the bag under heavy weight, there is zero give in the stitching.

The materials and the craftsmanship level applied in assembling the bag add up to what I feel is heavy durability and a lifetime of potential use with minimal issues.

  • Bottom Outer Fabric: 900 denier waterproof liner

peak design travel duffel bag

Though at $170, this bag isn’t cheap, and you’ll find plenty of cheaper options, I still believe it is a good worthwhile value.

The materials, construction, and overall quality make it a “buy it for life” purchase that you won’t have to replace anytime in the near future, and that will be a single purchase that fills plenty of needs.

For nomads and long term travelers, this bag will serve you extensively, and you’re better off knowing it won’t fall apart mid journey. Buy cheap…buy twice.

At $170, with the quality and function you get, this bag is still a good value

If you are a nomad carrying more than would fit in a normal travel backpack and need something bigger, convenient, and still more functional than roller luggage for adventure, I highly recommend the 65L Peak Design travel Duffel .

If you are a dedicated backpacker but need a small duffel for overflow storage, I highly recommend picking up the 35L peak Design Travel Duffel .

If there’s any brand we’d trust with taking the humble duffel into the 21st (or 22nd, or 23rd) century, it’s Peak Design.

Which brings us to the 35-liter Travel Duffel. This is one of two Travel Duffels available from Peak Design, the other being the 65-liter Travel Duffelpack, which is more of a duffel-backpack-hybrid. In this review, we’re focusing only on the 35-liter Travel Duffel.

Peak Design Travel Duffel in Detroit

We’ve been putting this duffel to the test over the past two weeks, so let’s jump right in and see if it truly is the duffel of the future.

Materials & Aesthetic

At the time of this review, the Peak Design Travel Duffel comes in two colors: Black and Sage Green. While we would normally opt for black here at Pack Hacker—especially to match the Peak Design Travel Backpack we recently reviewed—we wanted to switch it up this time and go with the Sage Green.

This option comes with leather accents, which are located on the handles and tags. These accents nicely complement the Sage Green look, which we think actually looks like more of a heathered gray/heathered green. And just to note, the Black version has Hypalon accents instead of leather, meaning it is totally free of animal products.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Leather Accents

The main fabric on this bag is a 400D Heathered Nylon Canvas, which pulls everything together nicely and feels very robust. This is the same material we’ve seen on the Everyday Backpack , which has held up well for us in testing. The only difference is that, in this case, it’s made with 100% recycled materials. Overall, we really like the look of this bag (and our Instagram audience did, too).

From a branding perspective, there are several Peak Design and “PD” logos found on the duffel, and we think they’re all quite tasteful—nothing too loud.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Logos

Peak Design has gone for a #10 Zoom zipper for the main compartment, which comes with some nice weather resistance, and then YKK zippers throughout the rest of the duffel. There was a bit of controversy on our Peak Design Travel Backpack review over the use of a large Zoom zipper compared to YKK for the main zipper, but for a duffel, we’re less concerned about this choice. If it does fail, it’s still mostly operational (which, of course, isn’t the case on a clamshell backpack).

Peak Design Travel Duffel Zippers

There is also a 900D liner with a rubbery feel at the bottom of the bag, which adds some durability for when you set the bag down or toss it around. And you may have noticed by now that there is some metal on this thing—all of the strap attachment point have aluminum buckles on them, which we’ll get into later. We always love to see metal in favor of plastic, and we think this is a nice touch from Peak Design that adds to the high-quality feel of this duffel.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Bottom Material

Finally, there is some Hypalon in a few places throughout the bag—not as much as on the black version, but it’s included on the touchpoints to add a somewhat rubbery feel and help you grip the attachment points more easily.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Hypalon

External Components

A key feature of the Peak Design Travel Duffel is that it has four different carry styles to choose from. Yes, you read that right— four.

As you might suspect, some work better than others. Starting with the hand carry, this simply involves putting the two straps together and attaching them with a magnet. The magnets aren’t the strongest ever, but your hand will be holding the straps together most of the time so it’s not a huge deal. This is a pretty functional way to carry the bag, and the magnets do make the process of lashing those straps together a bit easier.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Hand Carry

Another option is the sling carry, which uses the shoulder strap. This strap is attached to the nylon loops on either side of the duffel, using those aluminum buckles we mentioned earlier. With this carry mode, you’ll want to keep the straps a little looser, as you want to sling it across your body.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Duffel Carry

The shoulder carry is basically the same thing as the sling carry, but you’re just popping the strap onto one shoulder instead of over your body. You’ll probably want to tighten the strap a bit more than you would in sling mode, so the bag carries higher on your body.

While you’re in either sling or shoulder carry mode, you can easily take the other straps off and stow them away. It did take us some time to get the hang of this, but the more we used the duffel, the easier it became.

The aluminum buckles on the straps—which are really more of a large hook than a buckle—allow you to quickly and easily attach the straps to the various attachment points on the bag. At first, we were a bit skeptical seeing as these straps kind of just “hook” onto the attachment points, but they actually do stay put quite nicely thanks to a large divot in the aluminum that prevents them from detaching on their own.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Attachment Point

The backpack mode can be accessed by adjusting the straps so they’re anchored on the attachment points furthest towards the top and bottom of the bag. There are also some magnets on either end of the duffel that allow you to fold in the corners of the bag, which make for a more streamlined look and feel when in backpack mode or carry mode. It also means that you won’t have the top corner of the duffel rubbing against your neck, which is always good.

Now, we’re not going to sugarcoat it—the backpack mode is not an ideal way to carry this duffel. The straps aren’t very comfortable, but it works in a pinch if you need to cover a short distance and your hands are full.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Backpack Carry

One interesting note about this bag is that there’s no real “top,” and the logo follows suit—it looks the same whether it’s worn upside down or right side up in backpack mode, which is nice. That means you can carry it whichever way you want, depending on how your gear is oriented inside. These are the types of small details that we think really set Peak Design apart from other companies—the magnets, logos, aluminum buckles, and Hypalon touchpoints really come together to create a unique and highly-functional carry system.

We’ll also point out that the 65-liter version of this duffel seems to offer a more robust backpack strap system. We’re assuming that Peak Design decided against more robust backpack straps with this version since it’s not quite as necessary at 35 liters.

As we mentioned above, we do think the first three carry modes work best for this duffel. We don’t love the backpack mode quite as much, and we think that’s okay. This is primarily a duffel bag, after all, and it works well…as a duffel bag! It is nice to have the option of converting to backpack mode in specific situations, but we didn’t find ourselves using it all that much.

We also like that the shoulder strap offers a nice amount of padding and that the padding goes pretty far across the strap. This is a clear improvement over what we’ve seen in some other shoulder straps in the past.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Side Folded

Overall, we did find the magnets throughout the bag to be slightly weak—not only those on the carry handles, but the ones on the side flaps as well. When this duffel gets really full, sometimes those side-flap magnets can come undone by accident. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means, just something we noticed in testing. A little more security would have been helpful here.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Magnets

And lastly, there are two solid grab handles on either end of the duffel that are streamlined and barely noticeable when not in use. They’re nicely padded and offer a quick way to grab this duffel from whatever angle you may need.

Inside the Pack

The great thing about duffels is that they usually open up to one massive compartment, and the Peak Design Travel Duffel is no exception.

It’s at this time that we’d usually give our packing cubes PSA , although with the Travel Duffel we do have one clarification to make. This bag is optimized for Peak Design’s packing tools and can fit three “units” of tools in them, meaning those specific cubes will fit perfectly in here and utilize the full space. If you have those cubes, great. If not, you’ll be fine with whatever cubes you do have—you’ll just need to do some tinkering to get everything to fit correctly.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Main Compartment

Inside the main compartment, that giant bucket space does have some zippered pockets on the side. These feature Peak Design’s rubbery mesh, allowing you to see what’s inside while still keeping things secure.

We like that this bag has locking zippers, letting you have a locked-up and completely secure duffel that won’t unzip easily. There’s also a bit of rigidity on the side of the zippers in the main compartment, which helps the bag keep its shape.

Moving on to the side pockets, there are two larger horseshoe-style pockets on each side which have aluminum stays to help them keep their shape. The zippers can be locked down in this area, too, if you want to secure the side pockets.

The first pocket on the side opens up to reveal three rubbery mesh pockets. During our testing, we used these pockets for a passport, a small pair of ROAV sunglasses , and an Anker battery bank . Extra space is available for stuffing a jacket inside or for other free-floating items.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Side Pocket with Three Sleeves

In the front of this section, there is another zippered pocket which is pretty large and has no additional organization inside.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Side Pocket Outer Pocket

Flipping it around to the other side, the second horseshoe pocket has those rubbery mesh pockets again, except this side just has two divisions inside.

This side also has a small nylon loop, which could be used to attach a keychain or some additional Peak Design accessories. A luggage ID is also found in this area, though we don’t think this is exactly the best place for a luggage ID as it’s not in an obvious location.

Peak Design Travel Duffel Side Pocket Inside Loop

Testing and Durability

At the time of this review, we’ve been testing the Peak Design 35-liter Travel Duffel over the course of two weeks in Detroit and Chicago. Overall, we’re digging the simplistic style and multiple carry options offered on this bag.

Peak Design Travel Duffel In Detroit

It’s a solid “so far, so good” on the aesthetic and durability fronts and we haven’t noticed any wear-and-tear issues so far. The bottom is marked up a bit, of course, but that’s to be expected since it’s been tossed around in cars and trains. Other than that, it’s holding up very well and we have no durability concerns at this point.

Peak Design Travel Duffel in Detroit

We think this duffel could be a great companion to a larger one-bag travel backpack. And while duffels tend to fall short when it comes to carrying things like laptops, the Peak Design Travel Duffel does offer some solid organization and just the right amount of balance for holding everything you want while still having a couple organized areas. It won’t handle a laptop very well, though, to be clear.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Cord loop system allows it to be carried as a duffel, messenger bag, and backpack
  • Magnetic components all over this duffel keep it low profile no matter which way it is carried
  • Almost no internal organization, works well with Peak Design packing cubes

Magnets can be weak at times and the backpack carry isn’t ideal.

Peak Design 65L Travel Duffelpack Review

The Peak Design Travel Duffelpack surprised me in becoming my one-bag travel solution for my camera gear. It's also the most comfortable backpack I've used!

A duffel bag isn’t usually a photographer’s first choice when it comes to selecting from the myriad of options available to carry camera gear.

You probably associate a duffel bag with going to the gym, or as an ‘overnight bag’ for a weekend away.

Up until recently, I used a combination of a regular backpack and a rolling camera bag when shooting destination weddings. Neither bag was quite big enough to cram everything into just one piece of carry on luggage… which was always my goal.

Enter the Peak Design Travel Duffelbag – a 65L behemoth of a gear-hauler from the guys behind the Everyday Backpack, and so many other successful carry-products.

Peak-Design-Travel-Duffelpack-Review-5

Elegant and ergonomic, this 65L duffel-backpack lets you carry all your gear and then some.

Would this duffel-bag-cum-backpack really be able to fulfill my solo-travel-bag needs here in 2024? Let’s dive in to the review!

Build & Appearance

peak design travel duffel bag

The Duffelpack looks unlike any other backpack you’ll come across.

Peak Design seem to have taken a leaf out of Apple’s less-is-more approach to design of late.

The extremely popular Peak Design Everyday Backpack had a little too much going on for my personal tastes, whereas the recent additions to the Travel line (notably the Peak Design Travel backpack ), are more minimal in external design.

The Travel Duffelpack reminds me of an origami spring roll, with various folds in the fabric giving it a modern, technical twist.

I’ve always chosen black when it comes to bags, but this time I took a punt on the ‘sage’ version, which is closer to grey than green, and unlike any other bag colour I’ve seen – it really is unique, and I really like it.

The base of the bag (which becomes the ‘back’ when in backpack mode) is made from something called ‘Ottoman-weave Poly’, which is slightly glossy, and offsets the matt fabric of the rest of the bag. It’s also weatherproof.

As for build quality, the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is a premium product which is built to last a lifetime – in fact, as with all Peak products, it’s got a life-time warranty.

Zippers slide effortlessly, handles are sturdy, stitching is perfect, padding is comfortable – this is a bag that’s able to take all the abuse you throw at it, and still look great carried on your back or by your side.

Exterior Features

Peak Design Duffelpack

A premium duffel bag that’s been designed to be carried as a backpack.

Part duffel bag, part backpack, the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is a rather unique way to carry your camera gear, clothes, and whatever else you can stuff in its gargantuan 65L capacity.

In fact, the Travel Duffelpack is ‘only’ 45L in its normal state – the additional 20L reveals itself when you unzip the two zips on the undersides of the bag.

If the contents of your Duffelpack are soft enough, you can actually use these expansion zippers as a form of compression – simply open the zippers to expand the bag to its full 65L capacity, stuff as much gear as you can inside, then close all the zips back up.

Peak Design want you to use their ‘packing tools’, which is advisable since they keep all your gear so neat and tidy inside.

As for safely transporting your camera gear, there are 3 sizes of camera cube that can fit nicely inside the Duffelpack.

To maximise space, I prefer to use the 5L Peak Design Sling (reviewed here ) as a ‘packing cube’ of sorts – this way you have a smaller every-day-carry bag ready to deploy.

There are two large zippers that run across the sides of the Duffelpack, which open to reveal handy pockets, for iPads, passports, headphones, water bottles and the like.

There’s also a neat little ID card slot, which is almost too well concealed to be noticed by anyone who happens to come across your bag when missing.

The padded ‘flaps’ on the top of the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is where the magic happens. Behind them, lie two padded waist straps, which can be released with a quick slide, before you put the bag on your back.

Duffelpack waist straps

The padded back flaps neatly conceal hip straps.

While you may not ever need to use the hip straps, they act as additional ‘buffers’, increasing the already-decent padding on your back when carrying the Duffelpack in backpack mode.

The shoulder straps feature an adjustable sternum strap, and two hefty grab handles, which are intended to be used when carrying the bag in duffel mode.

I have to admit, I rarely used the Travel Duffelpack in duffel mode. The grab handles did prove useful once or twice when quickly grabbing the bag off the floor, but the majority of time I used it as a travel backpack.

Since its name suggests that you should carry the Duffelpack as a duffel bag (i.e. in one hand at your side), I was pleasantly surprised at how well it functioned as a backpack. I actually found it more comfortable than most other dedicated backpacks.

This could be to do with my height (6ft 4″), or the length of my upper torsos, but whatever the case, it’s an awesome backpack  – comfortable, easy to get on and off, and impressively durable.

Another highlight of the Duffelpack and what makes it so functional to use as a camera gear hauler is the extra long main zipper, which allows the entire bag to hinge open, much like a doctor’s bag.

This small design detail makes it infinitely easier to add or remove items to the bag, and makes accessing your camera gear a breeze.

The Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is actually a cross between a duffel bag, a backpack… and a traditional rolling camera bag, in the way that it can open completely to reveal the entirety of your gear. Accessing your camera gear with the bag laid out completely on the ground just makes sense.

Interior Features

Peak Design Duffelpack

The simple, cavernous interior is best used with packing cubes.

In stark contrast to the Peak Design Travel Backpack, which was a confusing melange of every storage option imaginable, the interior of the Travel Duffelpack is thankfully much simpler.

Two zippered mesh side pockets offer internal stitching to separate them into 4 separate compartments, ideal for lens filters, cables, batteries, and other smaller items.

There’s no official laptop sleeve, but due to to the cavernous dimensions of the Duffelpack, it’s not hard to find a spot for one.

I made the mistake of stashing my Macbook Pro at the front of the bag (i.e. closest to my back when wearing it as a backpack). This made sense from an accessibility point of view, but due to the metal internal zippers, the laptop lid suffered some unfortunate scratches.

zippers

Internal zippered pockets are useful but can scratch.

This could have been alleviated by ‘covering’ the zipper pulls when in the closed position using a piece of material, which is common practice with Think Tank Photo bags, among others.

I chose instead to sandwich my laptop in between some items of clothing, protecting it from those nasty zippers…

Storage Capacity

storage capacity duffelpack

One week in Bali to shoot a destination wedding – 45L worth of gear.

My travel backpack size of choice has always been 45L, which is usually in keeping with carry-on luggage regulations.

Having the additional 20 litre capacity available on the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is incredibly useful.

45L is more than enough to house my entire camera gear arsenal needed to shoot a destination wedding, alongside enough clothes to last a week in a hot country.

Then, if I decide to do some shopping, I can expand the Duffelpack by 20L, and either try and sneak it back on as carry-on luggage, or check the bag in, safe in the knowledge that it’ll come out the other end unscathed.

Ease of Use/Comfort

side straps

Straps are on the sides, top and front of the Duffelpack.

Getting gear in and out of the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack is simple and enjoyable. Being able to open the smooth-sliding zippers to reveal the entirety of the contents of your bag is a revelation.

It also means that whatever camera cube you choose to house your camera gear will be completely revealed – even if stowed at the very ends of the bag.

The best part about carrying the Duffelpack as a backpack is when you actually come to take it off your back – instead of placing the strap side down (like you would a traditional backpack), the straps remain on the top of the bag.

This slight change in usage actually makes a huge difference. Not only is it much easier and faster to slide a heavy bag off your back onto the ground without ‘twisting’ it the other way up, it also makes perfect sense from a cleanliness perspective – the part of the bag that meets your back always remains clean!

The more I used the Peak Design Travel Duffelpack as a backpack, the more I appreciated this. It makes me wonder why no backpack has been made which opens in this unique way too.

When not carrying the Duffelpack as a duffel or a backpack, it’s nice to be able to quickly grab it using either one of the side handles, or those found at the top and bottom of the bag – these were especially useful when pulling the bag out of overhead luggage compartments.

Value for Money + Discount Code

Peak Design products are premium-priced for people who appreciate premium quality and design.

At around $220, the Travel Duffelpack thankfully isn’t priced out of reach for most photographers or frequent travelers.

Since it can easily replace both a backpack and a travel bag, it’s actually great value for money, and makes for a sound investment if you plan to use it like I do, transporting camera gear safely as well as clothes and other travel-related knick-knacks.

Peak Design Travel Duffelpack Review | Conclusion

travel duffelpack

The Duffelpack was my gear hauler of choice for 2024.

When testing the Duffelpack on my overseas trip to Bali this year, I never expected for it to become my main travel camera bag of choice.

I fell in love with its unique design, looks and functionality, and am pleased that it can effectively replace two of my most commonly used travel bags.

Sure, it’s not meant to be a dedicated camera bag, and the lack of dedicated internal pockets may deter some O.C.D. photographers, but for everyone else, this bag has everything you need and nothing superfluous.

It’s understated enough to pass through foreign streets unnoticed, while still remaining stylish and functional. Just be careful of those damn zippers!

Wow it’s definitely a big bag. I have a similarly sized one I bought years ago made by Oakley that also has built in backpack straps. But they seem to loosen and disconnect quite easily so I never used it in that way. It’s probably due for a replacement and my wife and I have been looking at other bags of this style. I may have to jump this one to the top of the list! Great article as usual!

Thanks Tommy! Yeah there aren’t many 65L duffels out there that spread the load so well over your back.

The Best Gym Bags Are the Best Bags, Period

By Avidan Grossman , Jake Woolf , and Will Porter

The best gym bags are built for more than just the gym. Sure, they come with the product specs you'd expect from a bag designed to store your sweaty workout gear —water-resistant fabrics, adjustable shoulder straps, ample shoe compartments—but these aren't bags made exclusively for exercising.

Functionality is paramount, but so is form (kind of like, uh, going to the gym ). And now that you're hitting the gym again with some regularity—or swear this is the week you're going to start!—you'll need a bag up to the task. A tote bag won't do the job. A backpack feels inadequate. But a specialty gym bag (a.k.a. a duffle bag—or “duffel bag,” depending on your preference) with a generous main compartment to keep those filthy gym clothes separated from the chinos and button-up you'll be changing into post-shower? That's just what the doctor ordered. Especially when said gym bag comes with an abrasion-resistant laptop sleeve so you can bring your work with you wherever you go, you sick puppy, you.

The Best Gym Bags Shopping Guide

  • The Best Gym Bag With Shoe Compartment : Tracksmith Weekend Duffel , $190
  • The Best Gym Bag on Amazon : Peak Design Travel Duffel , $140

And don't forget: Even the most technical gym bag can double as a slick weekender on a last-minute summer getaway or a lightweight carry-on for your first airplane trip in months—provided, of course, you invest in a style with the right accoutrement. Durability is a must, as is an easy-access side pocket to store your water bottle. A few carefully placed external pockets to hold all your small items never hurt, either. So even if you're an expert gym-goer getting reacquainted with the day-to-day grind, it's worth reminding yourself what a game-changer a high quality gym duffle can be, and then tracking down the best one for your routine.

Luckily, GQ Recommends unearthed 11 of the absolute best gym bags on the market right now, so you can hit your PRs—or just hop on the Hampton Jitney—in style.

The Best Gym Bag, Overall: Patagonia Black Hole

peak design travel duffel bag

Black Hole Duffel Bag, 40L

Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag tested and reviewed by Timothy Beck Werth

Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag, tested and reviewed by Timothy Beck Werth

Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag tested and reviewed by Timothy Beck Werth

Is there anything Patagonia's legendary Black Hole bags can't handle? In tote or dopp form, the waterproof 14-ounce 900 Denier nylon fabric works like an impenetrable forcefield, repelling whatever the world throws at it (and looks way better for the wear, though you can always hose it down for a makeshift factory reset). Its duffel, though, remains a standout, thanks to features like daisy chains for you to hook on an extra pair of climbing shoes or a portable speaker for your bike commute to and from the gym. The cavernous 40-liter main compartment is enough to house a weekend's worth of outfits, and features a separate mesh pocket that's great for keeping your sweaty gear far away from your crisp 9-to-5 standbys. Plus, its handles and straps mean you can carry it however you prefer—no more straining your biceps with extra work after a gnarly arms day.

The Best Gym Bag With a Shoe Compartment: Tracksmith Weekend Duffel

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Tote Bag, and Baggage

Weekend Duffel

Tracksmith Weekend Duffel tested and reviewed by Will Porter

Boston’s Tracksmith needs no introduction by this point—they’ve been crafting some of the best heritage-inspired performance running gear for a decade now, not to mention whipping up dope collaborations with brands like District Vision and Brendon Babenzien’s new-look J.Crew. The Tracksmith Weekend Duffel is a mainstay in our rotation, even if we’re not headed out of town for race weekend. The bag is extremely well made and is built to last, much like the vintage pieces it draws inspiration from. It’s outfitted with a roomy shoe compartment for your stinky kicks or gym clothes, plus comes with a super handy nylon blanket to spread out on race day or in the park on a weeknight.

The Best Gym Bag on Amazon: Peak Design Travel Duffel

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Tote Bag, and Baggage

Peak Design

Travel Duffel 35L

Peak Design Travel Duffel tested and reviewed by Tyler Chin

Sure, we already featured some other bags that you can buy on Amazon, but few are as high quality as the Peak Design Travel Duffel. Like all of the brand’s gear, it’s centered around photography and travel, but we absolutely love the 35-liter model for the gym. It has an extra long zipper that makes it easy to rummage around in, is made from heavy duty nylon that can stand up to a beating, and, maybe most importantly, is guaranteed for life against manufacturing defects and any failure that renders the bag unusable. It’s not hard to trust a product that is backed with that kind of confidence.

The Best Gym Bag With Laptop Compartment: Lululemon City Adventurer

peak design travel duffel bag

City Adventurer Large Duffle Bag

If you tend to book it to the gym as soon as you log off, you need a bag that can hold your workout duds and your office essentials—and won't look out of place at either. The City Adventurer is the best gym bag from Lululemon if only because it comes with plenty of storage for your sweat-wicking, four-way stretch gear along with a padded sleeve for laptops up to 16" (you know, in case you need to bang out some emails while you wait for the bench to free up). It's cut from a lightweight waterproof fabric and tricked out with handles, a cross-body strap, and exterior pockets, including an expandable option specifically for your sweat-soaked garms. We're also giving it bonus points because it's shaped like a bowling bag, which you should definitely use it for if this guy's energy matches your own.

The Best Waterproof Gym Bag: Rains Gym Bag

peak design travel duffel bag

Rains Gym Bag

Bloomingdale's

Rains is famous for outerwear that laughs in the face of inclement weather. Its duffle bag harnesses the brand's trademark waterproof tech to protect your workout gear from the worst of the elements, whether it's raining cats and dogs or you're the bedraggled owner of a pet insistent on slobbering all over your gym shoes.

The Best Budget Gym Back: Nike Brasilia

peak design travel duffel bag

Brasilia Training Duffle Bag

This one's a no-brainer. The Brasilia is one of the most popular gym bags in Nike's arsenal, and if you can't trust the Swoosh to provide a spacious, heavily-zippered duffle to store all your swoosh-emblazoned gear, who can you turn to? It's got easy-access exterior pockets for small valuables like your phone and earbuds as well as ventilated mesh side pockets to keep your sweaty clothes and dirty shoes from stinking up the main compartment. And with a durable coated bottom, you won't have to worry about scuffs and tears.

The Best Retro Gym Bag: L.L. Bean Waxed Canvas

peak design travel duffel bag

Waxed Canvas Duffle

Not everyone is into the newfangled waterproof, anti-odor, solar-powered BS that gym bags have become. What happened to a good ol' fashioned duffel bag? Well, L.L.Bean's timeless duffle bag has been around for decades and isn't showing any signs of going away. Sure, the recipe has changed a bit over several decades, but the vintage specimens that menswear geeks drool over aren't all that different from today's version. It's made with full-grain leather handles and all-cotton waxed canvas that'll repel water and look better with age (something none of the synthetic bags can say). Add to that detachable shoulder straps, convenient exterior zip pockets, a reinforced bottom, and a rugged heritage look that'll outlast any trend and you've got yourself a bag that'll see you pumping iron well into retirement.

The Best Gym Backpack: Aer Fit Pack 3

peak design travel duffel bag

Okay, yes—Aer's Fit Pack 3 is technically a backpack. But its fan-favorite style comes chock full of the type of product details you'd expect to see in a next-level duffle designed for heavy-duty wear and tear. Its exterior is made out of abrasion-resistant 840D nylon with Cordura side paneling, and a padded interior ensures your laptop stays secure no matter how many dirty socks you've wedged in there. Factor in an easy-access water bottle pocket and Duraflex hardware, and you're looking at a formidable gym bag alternative that might convert even the staunchest duffle devotee.

The C-Suite Gym Bag: Bennett Winch Weekender

peak design travel duffel bag

Bennett Winch

Weekender Holdall

Todd Snyder

If you’re hunting for a gym bag that doesn’t look out of place in a corner office, Bennett Winch’s luxe bag is the solution. It brings the clean lines of a weekender, the functionality of a gym duffel, and craftsmanship of the tailor who makes your bespoke suits. Hand-crafted in England using top-shelf materials (full-grain leather for the handles and reinforcement areas, heavy-duty brass for the zippered pockets, and water-repellent-bonded cotton), Bennett Winch's Weekender is all about subtle opulence. The roomy main compartment has a padded laptop sleeve and enough space for at least two outfits. Plus, the bag comes with two separate waterproof compartments—one on either end—to keep stanky shoes and sweaty clothes away from your suit and tie.

The Best Gym Bag for Bougie Bodybuilders: Saint Laurent Ripstop Duffel Bag

peak design travel duffel bag

Saint Laurent

Ripstop Duffel Bag

They say that showing up to the gym is half the battle, but for plenty of folks, it's more like all-out war. That's why you pay thousands of dollars a year to go to a gym jam-packed with amenities like a juice bar and a day spa—storming the beaches, or, in this case, hauling your ass to the gym, feels like way less of a struggle when you're not slumming it to your local NYSC. Enter Saint Laurent's ripstop bag, which took home top honors in this year's Fitness Awards for its ability to transform your workouts into bona fide fashion moments. You’ll never have to worry about ID'ing it in the locker room, but don’t blame us if someone “accidentally” walks off with it while you’re on the treadmill. All's fair in love, war, and lifting.

The Best Gym Bag for Traveling: Matador Freefly Packable Duffel Bag

peak design travel duffel bag

Freefly Packable Duffel Bag

Meet your secret to keeping up your workout even on vacation. The Matador Freefly features all the crucial gym bag amenities like water-resistant materials and dedicated compartments for large and small goods—with a superpower. The duffel rolls up into itself until it’s the size of a hamburger (and not even one of those giant restaurant monstrosities). Toss it into your luggage and you won’t have to juggle your gear on the way to the hotel gym again.

What to Look for in a Gym Bag

Materials: These days, most gym bags are made from some form of nylon, but some of our favorites incorporate leather and canvas, too. Nylon is easiest to clean and resists odors better than other materials, but if you’re looking for something that’s going to last, make sure you figure out how thick the material is. For example, some cheaper nylon bags may end up being quite flimsy, while other bags, like the Peak Design bag we mentioned, is made from bulletproof 600D nylon that could probably be dragged behind a car without busting. Make sure you also consider the zippers—nothing is worse than a faulty zipper that stops working after a few uses.

Type of bag: Yes, this story is specifically geared toward gym bags, but as you may have noticed, many of the bags on our list are intended for travel, weekends away, or commuting. Any bag can be a gym bag if you want it to be! Don’t worry so much about the name of the bag or what the brand states as the bag’s main purpose, just make sure it has what you want. Sometimes that’s a shoe compartment, sometimes that means finding a bag that can be carried by hand or slung over your shoulder, and sometimes you just want something cheap to tote a towel and fresh pair of boxers. In the end, this is up to you, so read the details, look at the images, and if you decide you like a bag, make it your go-to.

Size : There's no reason to drag a bag the size of your checked suitcase to the gym. If you're only bringing a change of clothes and a pair of shoes, you'll want a bag that's just big enough to carry all of that because your workout shouldn't be the commute to the gym itself. Also, take into consideration the size of your gym's lockers—if you get a bag too big, you'll have to leave your gear out in the open, just asking to be stolen.

How We Tested

Not only is our team here at GQ obsessed with bags, but we’re also a pretty sporty bunch. We are just as dedicated to spending time at the Park Slope YMCA or LES Equinox as we are to keeping our finger on the pulse of the latest style trends. This means that we definitely use the things we talk about. A web-based image is no good to us, and it shouldn’t be enough for you. So we test bags constantly, hauling our workout gear all over the place, looking for the best of the best to then recommend our favorites to you.

Our group of editors and writers includes marathon runners, road cyclists, rec league soccer players, and Barry’s die-hards, so you can be sure that each bag we recommend has been put through its paces.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

peak design travel duffel bag

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

peak design travel duffel bag

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

peak design travel duffel bag

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

peak design travel duffel bag

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

peak design travel duffel bag

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

peak design travel duffel bag

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

peak design travel duffel bag

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
