Switzerland innovation park basel area opens new site on the novartis campus.

Basel, 17.08.2020

Basel Area Business & Innovation is the first large external organization to benefit from the opening of the Novartis Campus. The newly opened site of Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area is aimed at startups and established companies from the digital health and personalized medicine sectors. The objective is to establish a closeness between startups and the scientists from Novartis and thereby foster new forms of exchange, collaboration and innovation. The offer has met with a lot of interest. Eight companies have already settled in the Innovation Park.

Novartis Campus

In the coming years, Novartis will be opening its campus in Basel to companies from the life sciences sector. The first large external organization to take advantage of this opportunity is Basel Area Business & Innovation, which has set up its Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area on the Novartis Campus. The focus is on companies developing innovative solutions in the areas of digital health and personalized medicine. For this reason, the Novartis Campus is also home to the DayOne Accelerator , which promotes innovative projects and companies working on future solutions for the healthcare sector.

At its new location, the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area offers a modern working environment with 30 fixed and 12 flexible workplaces. The area of around 580 m2 comprises a main room with kitchen, lounge and innovation space, as well as a workshop room and a separate office. There is considerable interest in this offer, which has already prompted eight companies to move their business to the Innovation Park on the Novartis Campus. Sebastian Mathias Keller, CEO and co-founder of Rekonas Medical, says for example: “For us, the proximity to Novartis is of huge interest because we provide software in the field of neurology that can be used both in everyday clinical practice and also in the testing of new medicines. We’ve already had interesting discussions with people from Novartis about projects and possibilities for collaboration. There is also a lively exchange of ideas with other companies in the Innovation Park.”

After the sites in Allschwil, Basel and Jura, the Novartis Campus site is the latest addition to the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area. These four sites of the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area are part of the national network of Switzerland Innovation, which seeks to offer technology-oriented companies the best location for the development of products and facilitate easy access to talents, knowledge and technical expertise. “The opening of the site on the Novartis Campus is a godsend for us,” says Christof Klöpper, CEO of Basel Area Business & Innovation. “We see it as a vote of confidence from Novartis and as recognition of the quality of the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area.” The new and unique offering on the Novartis Campus makes Basel Area even more attractive for young and established companies active in the fields of digital health and personalized medicine.

Novartis Campus Park, Basel

To the rhine.

Geological maps of the Basel area indicate a hidden landscape; the Basler Rhine Valley formed by glaciers and rivers, now covered with settlements, agriculture and other evidence of human activity. Novartis Campus Park is once removed from its natural fundament by a subterranean garage – two hectares of poured concrete that act as a new, anthropogenic geological crust serving simultaneously as the park’s fundament and as a large-scale green roof.

novartis campus basel visit

Novartis Campus Park’s design echoes the Upper Rhine Valley landscape composition of geomorphic and vegetative phenomena. Gently descending from the upper terraces down to the Rhine, the park sequentially reconstructs the natural phenomena of the surrounding Rhine terraces on a small scale, and merges them into an atmospheric park landscape. The design references its surroundings, geologically and botanically, working mainly with natural vegetation. In the upper parts of the park stand a forest of native trees among which huge boulders seem to have remained as old glacial traces. Deep in the woods, the landscape appears suspended in a moment of devastation, like steep woodlands after a heavy snowmelt; the lime trees trunks are buried up to 6cm in a blanket of scree and they stand tilted at awkward angles from the weight. Generous meadows form the park’s middle section, which is planted with diverse, mainly exotic, solitary plants.  Deeply cut paths lead through these meadows near the Rhine where tapered poplars and birch groups punctuate aluvial iris-grass meadows native to the landscape. The artificial platform that stretches between the upper parking area and the Rhine is in essence a manmade stage – on which nature performs.

The paths diverge into the rising terrain to reconstruct another Basel-typical phenomenon– the „Hohlweg“, a narrow track cut into the earth and overgrown to become a tunnel of dense shrub. Following this, the visitor passes through the middle section and reaches lower terraces facing the Rhine. Here, alluvial iris reed grass vegetation is punctuated with solitary birch and cottonwood groupings standing tall on the vegetal horizon. The visitor enjoys an open view to the nearby Rhine and in turning, overlooks the entire park.
