DAY 1 Reykjavik Airport - Reykjavik Driving distance: approx. 50-95km/30-55 miles Velkominn to Iceland! Pick up your car at the airport and start your Iceland experience! If time permits, from Keflavik International Airport we recommend driving the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula, a great introduction to Iceland’s unique geology and volcanoes. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge dividing the European and North American tectonic plates cuts through the area. You’ll see unusual and stunning features around the peninsula, including craters, lava cliffs, fissures, and the Mid-Atlantic ridge itself. You can even walk on a bridge that divides Europe and North America. We also recommend a stroll in the surreal Gunnuhver area where you can view quirky colorful mud pools and steam vents bubbling away. Reykjanes is also home to the renowned Blue Lagoon, and you might enjoy the chance to relax in the soothing azure waters. Another great option is the Sky Lagoon which is a firm favourite with the locals. (important: admission to the Blue Lagoon needs to be booked in advance). Overnight: Reykjavik Meals included: - DAY 2 Reykjavik - Borgarfjordur Driving distance: approx. 155km/96 miles Today, head to the scenic Borgarfjordur region via the Hvalfjordur tunnel (or you can take the scenic coastal road instead (adds additional 17km/10miles to the trip). Borgarfjordur is a popular area among locals from Reykjavik, who enjoy coming here for holidays. It’s also been gaining popularity with international visitors for its exotic landscapes and Viking history. We suggest a stop in Borgarnes town where you can learn about the first Viking settlers in the area at the popular Settlement Museum. Visit Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot springs, the beautiful Hraunfossar (the Lava Falls), where melted water from a glacier flows through interesting lava formations. Near Deildartunguhver you can indulge in hot spring relaxation at the Krauma natural geothermal baths. Krauma is known for its “fire and ice” experience since it combines Deildartunguhver’s hot spring waters with cool spring water that originates from the mountains. If you wish to try something new, the Hvammsvik nature area is now open with its seven seaside pools evoking the traditional hot springs of olden times. Tonight, you are well situated to catch a glimpse of the famous northern lights, if Mother Nature decides to cooperate. Overnight: Borgarfjordur area Meals Included: Breakfast DAY 3 Borgarfjordur / Langjokull Glacier OR Snaefellsnes Driving distance: Varies Today you can choose to continue to explore the marvelous Borgarfjordur region, or you can visit the scenic Snaefellnes Peninsula. Each area has something to offer. Borgarfjordur: Here’s a hidden gem filled with enchanting volcanic scenery, glacial views, and Viking age history. Langjokull glacier offers exciting adventures such as exploring an ice cave and tunnel built into the icy blue heart of the glacier. Start with an adventurous ride up the glacier in a monstrous 18-wheeled vehicle. Once in the tunnel, you’ll view a glacier from the inside and learn how these icy wonders are formed. Another interesting area activity is a guided visit to the colorful Vidgelmir lava cave. Another beautiful place to visit is the scenic Husafell nature area. An exotic experience is a guided winter hike to the Husafell Canyon Baths, stone-lined hot pools in the secluded highlands. Snaefellsnes: This peninsula is known as “Iceland in a Nutshell” because it contains so many different types of Icelandic landscape in one location. Give yourself an early start since there is so much you can see in this beautiful area. We recommend you stop at the wind tangled Arnarstapi sea cliffs and the rocky beach of Djupalonssandur. The beautiful Snaefellsjokull glacier-volcano is the crown jewel of the peninsula. Legends say that the mountain is home to a benevolent half-troll guardian. Drive along the north coast through bustling fishing villages, stopping to look at Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in the country. Overnight: Borgarfjordur area Meals Included: Breakfast DAY 4 Borgarfjordur - Golden Circle - Hella or Hvollsvollur Driving distance: approx. 200km/125 miles Today you’ll be visiting some of Iceland’s best-known national wonders! Head for the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, where the world's oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. This is also the meeting point of the tectonic plates that divide the North American and European continents, giving you the rare chance to take a walk between two continents. This area, the Golden Circle area is full of hot springs, and there are two great local favorite bathing pools. Laugarvatn Fontana is built on top of a hot spring, and its steam baths are good for your skin and joints. The Secret Lagoon is a lovely historical stone lined natural geothermal pool with its own tiny geyser nearby. Visit the quirky geothermal fields of Geysir. Stroll along a footpath around colorful bubbling mud pools and spouting geysers. The most famous of these is Strokkur, which erupts about every ten minutes. Then visit the dramatic, two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade. Afterwards drive along winter country roads to your overnight in South Iceland. If nature co-operates, you might glimpse some northern lights! Stay at: Hella or Hvollsvollur area Meals Included: Breakfast DAY 5 Hvollsvollur or Hella - Vik - Kirkjubaejarklaustur Driving distance: approx. 180km/112 miles Travel along the south coast, one of Iceland’s main farming areas. You’ll see many farms and shaggy haired herds of Icelandic horses as you head along the Ring Road. See the magnificent waterfall, Skogafoss, site of hidden treasure. (Make sure you have your camera ready, Skogafoss makes a fantastic backdrop for a selfie). Nearby is Skogar Folk Museum, well known throughout Iceland for being the best of its kind with a collection of mementos from this region’s past housed in beautifully preserved old turf roofed buildings. Make a stop in pretty Vik village. Nearby you can admire stunning views of a black sand beach and the black basalt columns of Reynisdrangar. You’ll also see glaciers from the road, including Myrdalsjokull and Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull. The road leads alongside Vatnajokull as you head to your overnight stay. Overnight: Kirkjubaejarklaustur area Meals Included: Breakfast DAY 6 Kirkjubaejarklaustur - Vatnajokull National Park - Kirkjubaejarklaustur Driving distance: approx. 209km/130 miles Today is perfect for exploring glacial wonders in Vatnajokull National Park, Western Europe's largest national park. Start with a visit to Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, where blue, white, turquoise, and black-streaked icebergs shift and dance. The mystical lagoon is enormous and has been the backdrop for many major feature films and programs. It is a special place for photographers who enjoy the challenge of catching the icebergs in just the right light conditions. If you want a different glacial lagoon photography experience, the Fjallsarlon Iceberg Lagoon is beautiful and often has fewer visitors. Nearby is the Diamond Beach, an area where icebergs rest on black sand. It has become a famous site for Instagrammers. Visit Vatnajokull National Park’s majestic Skaftafell area, which is located between two glaciers and offers several winter hiking possibilities. Depending on your schedule, Skaftafell is an excellent place to try a guided hike on a glacier. There are few better ways to really get close to a glacier and learn about their formation. Overnight: Kirkjubaejarklaustur area Meals Included: Breakfast DAY 7 Kirkjubaejarklaustur - Reykjavik Driving distance: approx. 265 km/165 miles Drive along the scenic south coast back to the west. Visit Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall that you can walk behind (subject to trail conditions). You’ll also be passing through landscapes impacted by Eyjafjallajokull volcano, famous for its 2010 eruption. If the skies are clear, you might even get a glimpse of the glacier-crowned volcano. Visit Selfoss, a town that makes a great break during your day. The innovative new Selfoss Center reconstructs the original buildings from the town’s 19th and early 20th century. Visitors find this colorful Icelandic style of corrugated iron facades and chalet architecture very charming. The buildings contain artisanal restaurants, pubs, local shops and art galleries. If you love learning fun facts, we suggest visiting the Skyrland exhibition in the Sellfoss Center’s Old Dairy building. Along from Selfoss, the town of Hveragerdi is great place to take a break and enjoy the peaceful village atmosphere. Hveragerdi is famous for its geothermal greenhouses where flowers and vegetables are grown year-round. The town has several charming restaurants featuring local cuisine, as well as a small geothermal park. Return to Reykjavik in the late afternoon/early evening. The Reykjanes peninsula is located on a drift zone, between two continents, the North American and Eurasian plate. It is a unique area where you can see different elements of the drift zone; very active geothermal energy, lava fields and other natural phenomenon. The Blue Lagoon and Keflavik international airport are also located in the area.
Hellisheiði power station is the third-largest geothermal power station in the world, located in southwest Iceland. The plant has a geothermal energy exhibition and offers presentations on sustainable energy as well as educational tours.
The Blue Lagoon is a famous geothermal spa located in Reykjanes peninsula nearby the International Airport of Iceland. It was formed during an operation at the nearby geothermal power plant. Reservations in advance are necessary for those who are planning a visit.
The Aurora is a natural phenomenon caused by electrically charged particles, mainly electrons and protons ejected from the sun colliding with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen causing them to emit light that is visible to us. These hypnotic lights are known as Aurora Borealis, Polar Lights or Northern Lights in the arctic north and Aurora Australis (southern lights) around the south pole. The color of the Aurora has to do with the type of gas that these particles collide with, oxygen produces green light at low altitudes and red at high altitudes. Nitrogen produces purple Aurora. The green color is the most common and red can only be seen at the strongest of geomagnetic storms. The full understanding of the physical processes that cause the aurora are still a mystery but we know the fundamental causes of the Aurora is the interaction of solar wind with the Earth‘s magnetosphere.
There are three basic requirements for seeing the northern lights. Solar activity, darkness and clear skies. This means that you cannot see the northern lights during summer, they are still happening, there's even a phenomenon called daylight aurora, but our eyes cannot detect them as sunlight drowns out the Aurora. So the darker the better. Going out of the city is not a requirement, the Aurora can often be spotted within city limits in Iceland, however to best enjoy them going away from city lights enhances the experience. Also people should not use mobile phones if they are looking for the northern lights, as the light from the screen will make it harder for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. It‘s always a good idea to take warm clothes on your Aurora excursions as Iceland can get very cold in the winter, that means wool undergarments, warm mid layer and a windproof shell.
Þingvellir National Park is the most important historic and geological sites in Iceland. The area is part of a fissure zone running through Iceland, being situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir and today the entire area is a protected national treasure.
Gullfoss, also called the Golden Waterfall, is one of the most iconic gems of the likewise named Golden Circle. The waterfall is located in the upper part of the River Hvíta. Gullfoss is actually two separate waterfalls, the upper one has a drop of 11 meters and the lower one 21 meters.
Geysir is the famous hot spring area located in the Haukadalur valley. The main attraction is known as Strokkur, which erupts energetically at regular intervals of 10 minutes or so its boiling waterjets can reach as high as 30 meters.
Kerið is a volcanic crater lake located in the area called Grímsnes in the South of Iceland, along the famous Golden Circle route. The crater walls are steep and often covered with Icelandic moss. The inside of the crater is a lake whose water is aquamarine colored due to the minerals from the soil. The crater is 55 meters deep and about 3000 years old.
The Secret Lagoon was created in 1891. This geothermal pool is the oldest one in Iceland! It opened to the public in 2005 and it offers showers, a bar & an eating area. It is conveniently located in the Golden Circle area.
Seljalandsfoss is one of the most famous and visited waterfalls in Iceland. It located along the South Coast of the Country right by the road n. 1. The waterfall is part of the Seljalands river that originated from the famous volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. The waterfall is approximately 60-meter high and it is famous for its path that leads visitor behind its powerful water flow.
Skógafoss is a waterfall located on the Skógá river on the South Coast of Iceland. This picture-perfect waterfall descends 60 meters from the cliffs. Before pouring down the cliffs becoming the famous waterfall, the river flows through the Skógárgil gorge.
Reynisfjara is a famous black sand beach in the South of Iceland, just next to the village of Vik. Black sand, lava formations, and basalt columns make it a popular stop for all visitors.
Reynisdrangar cliffs are towering basalt-type rock formations situated near the shore of Reynisfjara black sand beach, on the South Coast of Iceland. The folk legend wants them to be the rocky representation of two trolls turned into stone after being caught by the sunlight after dawn.
The famous promontory named Dyrhólaey is located in the south coast of Iceland. From this peninsula, that once was a volcanic island, the views are stunning. Glacier, lava columns, the open sea. The highlight of this area is the lava arch that is standing in the ocean. Dyrhólaey is also well known for its puffin colonies during the summertime.
Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the ring road (Road number 1), featuring the impressive and popular black sand beach.
Hallgrímskirkja Church is most certainly Reykjavík´s best-known landmark. The white concrete Church whose image is printed in many postcards, dominates the city. As a matter of fact its tower can be seen from almost every corner of Reykjavík. Its distinctive and futuristic exterior made the Church one of the most visited spots in Reykjavík.
Harpa is the famous concert hall and conference center located in Reykjavik. The building features a distinctive and original colored glass facade inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland. Its unique architecture makes it one of Reykjavik most loved landmarks.
Reykjavík is the capital and biggest city of Iceland with a population of approximately 124,000. It is the northernmost capital in the world. Despite its small size, you can find many attractions and museums, making Reykjavik a popular destination.
This sublime museum displays artifacts from the settlement to the modern age of Iceland history. The exhibition gives you an excellent and enlightening overview of Iceland's history and culture. The museum functions as the center for the preservation of Iceland´s national heritage. It counts about 300,000 artifacts and nearly four million photographs in its collation.
Solfar Sculpture, also known as the Sun Voyager, is the famous steel sculpture created by artist Jón Gunnar Árnason. The art piece is located next to the Sæbraut road in downtown Reykjavík. Its shape reminds of a ship floating on air, facing the ocean.
Laugavegur is the main shopping street in Reykjavik and it is located in the heart of the city. Its name means literally „wash road“ as this was once the route to the hot springs where many Icelanders took their clothes to launder. Today it is a vibrant and innovative street filled with designer ateliers, tourist gift shops, bars, and restaurants.
Reykjavik's largest swimming pool with many facilities such as a 50m outdoor pool, outdoor children’s pool and paddling pool, two waterslides, several hot tubs, steam bath, gym and mini golf course. It is located at Laugardalur valley.

Where to Find the Northern Lights in Idaho
Table of contents, can you see the northern lights in idaho, when is the best time to see the northern lights in idaho, where can you see the northern lights in idaho.
Craig Goodwin worked in partnership with Visit Idaho to create this Travel Tip.
Seeing the northern lights is a bucket-list experience that leads many to take long journeys to Iceland and Alaska, but a trip to northern Idaho , along with persistence and a little luck, is all it takes to check that box off the list. Many don’t know that you can see the aurora so close to home, and even fewer realize that the dark skies and vast horizons of Idaho make it one of the best places for such an encounter.
While energy released from the sun can light up the Earth’s atmosphere at any time of year, getting the right conditions to see it can be a challenge. Here are some key insights to help find success on your own adventure to see the northern lights in Idaho.
The biggest challenge is anticipating when the aurora will be active enough to see in Idaho. Scientists measure the intensity of the lights on a Kp index of geomagnetic activity, and there are dozens of forecast models that give anticipated Kp readings for a given day. The 27-day forecast by the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska is a good place to start. The key is to look for a forecasted Kp of four or higher.
Just like a weather forecast, sometimes they get it wrong, and the lights don’t show up as anticipated. I’ve learned over the years that persistence pays off, and faithfully looking for the right conditions will lead to success. Seek out dark skies, free from the glow of city lights, and plan trips when there is no moonlight to compete with the aurora. The week before or after a new moon is ideal. Pay close attention to the weather to ensure cloud-free skies. The Clear Sky Chart website is a great source for this information.
I’ve also learned that even if the lights are a no-show, the worst outcome is spending a majestic night under the stars.
If the lights are active, they will become visible around two hours after sunset. At first, they appear as a dull glow hovering on the horizon, but as it gets darker and eyes acclimate, there are visible columns of light that ebb and flow in the sky. As the aurora intensifies, it looks like the universe is doing the wave, a cosmic stadium of vertical light rays rising and falling in mysterious symmetry.
Unfortunately, the human eye cannot see the vibrant colors present in the lights, but a digital camera on a tripod picks them up with stunning clarity. Don’t be afraid to give it a try with a wide-angle lens of 24mm to 14mm, focus set to infinity, at f2.8 to f4, ISO 3200 and a shutter speed of 10 to 20 seconds. Photos can make an aurora encounter that much more memorable. The only problem is that this may further contribute to an unhealthy obsession with the next chance to see them.
In addition to following the tips above, the best time to see the northern lights in Idaho at their most spectacular is between September and March.
After years of stalking the lights, I’ve identified some ideal locations to consider for a northern Idaho aurora adventure.
Heyburn State Park on Chatcolet Lake, near Plummer and St. Maries, has great views to the north, especially from the nearby Trail of the Coeur d’Alene’s bridge.
Another place where you can see the northern lights in Idaho is Schweitzer . The resort not only has mountain peaks with spectacular views, but they will also take you to the top of the ski lift in summer. After an evening of hiking the Selkirks and picking huckleberries, you can stick around for nature’s light show.
Moscow doesn’t have the mountain peaks of its northerly neighbors, but the rolling Palouse plains provide open vistas to the north. A simple night drive along U.S. 95 north of Moscow may be all that’s needed to witness a display of the aurora.
Priest Lake, in far-northern Idaho, has been my most reliable and rewarding location for viewing the northern lights. Hill’s Resort has a clear view, with sandy beaches and fire pits that make waiting for the aurora almost as enjoyable as the show itself. They are usually amenable to turning off the lights of the marina for night-sky enthusiasts. The nearby beach in front of the Priest Lake Museum is another good location where you can see the northern lights in Idaho.
Wherever the quest for the lights takes you, make sure to be safe. Go in groups, especially if hiking at night, and bring headlamps, extra batteries, warm layers and bear spray.
Encounters with the aurora borealis can be astonishing in their beauty and mystery, and it’s understandable that people spend thousands and travel far and wide for the experience. Thankfully in Idaho, all it takes is a strategic road trip, some extra caffeine to stay awake and a little luck to have the night of a lifetime.

Where to begin! This was absolutely the best trip of my life. I’ve been planning this trip since September of 2023. Guide to Iceland had so much helpful information about the country that assisted in knowing what to expect. If I had any questions they were quick in responding. I did encounter a couple hiccups which I feel was partially out of their control, however they were quick in fixing the situation. I unfortunately didn’t get to see the Northern Lights, nor was I able to do one thing on my journey the way they planned it and it being closed on the day they planned it on the itinerary. Just gives me a reason to come back, so I made peace with it. I’d recommend this and using them to assist in making your dream a reality.
Everything was perfect. From landing at the airport and being picked up by car rental company, every accommodation, and every tour, it was all taken care of and when I contacted customer service with questions they were quick to reply, I’ve traveled my fair share in my life but this was my first solo journey. I have to admit though, I’m not sure it’s fair to call it solo. Guid to Iceland was there every step of the way. I can’t wait to go back and see the north of the country. This tour took me through amazing sights, breathtaking landscapes and plenty of time to see the capitol as well. The accommodations, especially those guesthouses on people’s farm were amazing. The hosts were polite, welcoming and eager to answer questions. The food was incredible. The guides on the tours continued this, and were courteous and professional. I felt I was always in good hands. It was a trip of a lifetime, that I’ll always cherish. Thank you!!

Overall trip was great - plans well laid out, they quickly made adjustments to our itinerary so we could stay 3 extra days in Reykjavik. All hotels were beautiful, clean, amazing European style breakfasts included. This was my 2nd time visiting Iceland. Highlights - we booked 2 horseback riding tours - one through Guide to Iceland and one on our own. Eldhester through tour was not the best for experienced riders - we walked the pasture lands around but there were around 15 riders and only 4 experienced riders. Super cold, no interesting scenery. We booked our own at Laxnes and it was amazing! Really rode through different terrains, experienced riders and we were able to do all gaits! Highly recommend. Mycar rental agency - great service, we had a Toyota Rav4 and it was in great condition. I highly recommend buying highest level of insurance. I have traveled all over the world and never had a problem but while parked in Reykjavik we came out in the morning to find our car side swiped and pushed into another car. My out of pocket is 350,000 isk (~2600 usd). Sky Lagoon Sky ritual is a must - amazing views and experience!

Guide to Iceland has been amazing to work with!!! Due to weather conditions a few of our excursions were delayed, but we were always contacted before hand and everything was done to work it out for us. The accommodations they booked were great, and the tour groups they booked us with were also exceptional!! 100% recommend Guide to Iceland Everyone we contacted before the trip and during the trip were quick to respond and wonderful at accommodating all of our needs.
Winter driving in Iceland
With all the necessary preparations made beforehand, you’ll be more than ready to take to Iceland’s roadways during the winter months. Iceland is a fantastic country in which to undertake a winter self drive tour, granted the vehicle operator is confident driving in more difficult conditions.
One of the many blessings that come with driving in the winter is the snow-blanketed scenery; this is Iceland living up to its name, with fields, mountains and rivers masked and sculpted by the frosty elements.
Aside from this staggering beauty, driving in the winter is an adventure in itself, providing the first-hand experience of just how unpredictable and captivating both Iceland’s weather and nature can be. Travelling from one natural attraction to another, you may even have the chance to see the northern lights dancing above.
As with anywhere, driving in Iceland requires a keen awareness of the road rules and potential hazards. The first, and most obvious, is the darkness. It is a legal requirement in Iceland to keep your headlamps on at all times—this goes as much for the black of winter as it does a fully illuminated day in the spring, and has been put in place as a safety regulation due to the country’s ever-changing level of light. Some rental vehicles will have the headlights fixed ‘on’ automatically.
It is advised only to use high beam in pitch darkness, switching to your normal headlight level on the opposite approach of a vehicle—this is to ensure you are not blinding the other driver.
If you are not experienced in driving in harsh winter conditions, it is highly recommended that you get a four-wheel-drive, and make sure that the vehicle is fitted with quality winter tyres.
