For those who plan to travel during school — be it for a study abroad program, an alternative spring break, a fun trip with friends or just to head home during school breaks — the cost of flying can be prohibitive. However, a number of airlines offer special deals on student flights to make travel more accessible.

Here is a list of airlines that offer student flight discounts for young people traveling around North America and beyond.

Instead of offering discounts on individual tickets, Air Canada offers a Student Flight Pass for students traveling frequently within the Americas. It also offers an International Student Flight Pass for those planning to travel frequently with more distant destinations.

You can either buy a pass outright or pay it off over nine months (with interest). The pass, coupled with your Aeroplan frequent flyer account number, scores you four to six flight credits (depending on the destination) to use over a specified amount of time, usually 12-15 months. You will have to choose a specific zone in which to fly (like the Western U.S., Alberta or Brazil).

One credit is valid for one one-way flight.

Make sure the pass covers travel to and from your preferred destinations. You will need to plan to fly with Air Canada at least as many times as your pass is good for or the investment won’t be worth it.

You have to be a student in one of the airline’s participating regions (which includes the U.S. and Canada) and traveling out of specific airports to take advantage of Cathay Pacific’s student flight discounts.

Eligible student travelers will:

Get access to exclusive fares to some destinations and select fare categories.

An extra baggage allowance.

Free flight changes for Flex fare classes.

Exclusive rates for Light and Essential classes.

The discount is good for one-way and round-trip flights to specific destinations, plus it can be used to book a seat in economy, economy plus or business class.

If that’s you, check to see if Iberia Joven, the discount program for students, offers flights to where you’re headed. If it does, you may be able to score a 10% discount on certain flights and an extra free checked bag if you’re studying abroad.

Just make sure you book on the Iberia Joven site specifically, and know that not all routes are included and the discount is only for the lowest economy fares.

Lufthansa also offers flight discounts for students who book on the airline website. The discounts are valid only for certain flights from select countries, but in addition to fare savings on travel that qualifies, students get more checked baggage allowances and flexible booking.

To take advantage of these fares, you have to be at least 16 and enrolled in some sort of higher education. You'll have to verify your status as a student on the airline website. Then, when you search for fares, just remember to select “Student” to see any applicable discounts.

If you’re a student flying on Turkish Airlines, whether or not you’re a Turkish citizen, you can get up to a 20% discount on domestic flights within Turkey and 15% on international flights.

Students also enjoy a 40-kilogram baggage allowance (about 88 pounds) on flights that charge by weight and two 23-kilogram (about 50-pound) bags on flights that charge by piece. Students get free one-time flight changes for international flights, plus 25% more miles credited to your Miles&Smiles account when you fly before the end of 2024.

To get the discount, verify that you’re a student in the “Discount Types” section on the “My Personal Information” page in your Miles&Smiles loyalty account. Then just select the “Student” passenger option when searching for and booking flights.

Students flying to Emirates’ 250 destinations can score up to a 10% discount on economy and business class fares, plus an extra 10 kilograms (about 22 pounds) or an extra piece of luggage (except when flying to the U.S. or Canada).

Students flying on Singapore Airlines can enjoy a 10% discount on Lite, Value or Standard fares in economy class or premium economy class. They also get an extra luggage allowance, which is based on destination, and waived change fees the first time they need to alter their flight.

To enjoy these perks, first join the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program . Then you’ll be asked to verify that you’re a student, which you’ll need to do once a year. SAS offers discounts not just for students, but youth in general, which includes individuals ages 12 to 25. The availability of these discounted fares on any particular flight is limited, and it’s reserved for SAS Go (standard economy) bookings for specific fare classes.

If you’re a student enrolled in higher education ages 18 to 30 and planning travel to any of Qatar Airways’ many destinations, it’s likely worth it to join the airline’s Student Club.

You’ll have to enroll online and share passport and university details, but once you do, you’ll be provided with a unique code to use during booking that will net you a discount.

• Business Class: Up to 5% off (excluding taxes and surcharges)
• Additional Baggage Allowance : An extra baggage allowance of either 22 lbs (10 kg) or one additional piece depending on the travel class (not applicable for flights going to and coming from Canada and US).
• Flexible Booking Options: Free date change for Flex and Flex Plus fares; $50 change fee for Saver fares.

Students taking advantage of this offer must:

• Be between the ages of 16 & 31
• Be full-time students (part-time students do not qualify)
• Possess a valid student ID or acceptance letter from accredited institutions

From now until March 31, 2025, eligible student travelers can enjoy up to a 10% discount on economy and business class fares, with access to more than 250 destinations in the airline’s extensive network.

According to Emirates , its student discount offers:

• 10% off economy class and 5% off business class fares, excluding taxes and surcharges.
• 22 lb (10 kg) extra baggage allowance, or one extra piece of luggage in addition to the given allowance of up to 77 lb (35 kg), depending on the class of travel. Not applicable on flights to and from Canada and the US.
• Flexible options for flight changes: free date change for Flex and Flex Plus fares, and a $50 change fee for Saver fares.

Do Airlines Offer Student Discounts Or Perks?

To be eligible for the student discount, you must meet the following conditions:

• Be aged between 16 and 31 years old;
• Be a full-time student (those studying part-time courses cannot benefit from the discount, unfortunately);
• And have a valid and current student ID or acceptance letter from an accredited school, college or university of higher education.

Note that the discount can only be booked for one student per booking and cannot be applied to previously purchased tickets.

How to book

If you satisfy the eligibility criteria, you’re all set to book your discounted tickets! The process is fairly straightforward and similar to how you would book an ordinary Emirates flight ticket.

Step 1: Search for tickets on your intended route

Start by searching for your desired flight – simply visit the Emirates website or mobile app and enter your travel details, including your departure city, destination, travel dates, and class of travel. You will only be able to book for one passenger if using the student discount.

Step 2: Enter the student discount promo code

Next, in the “Promotional offers” field, enter the promo code “STUDENT” to apply the discount. Keep in mind that fares and benefits may be subject to availability, so always read the fine print before booking. It's also advised that you book your flights as early as possible to secure the best deals.

Step 3: Select your preferred flight

Once you’ve entered your flight details and promo code, you will be shown a list of available flights for your selected travel route and dates. Pick the flight you want, then proceed to the passenger details page.

To proceed with your booking, you will be asked to provide your first and last names and date of birth. Make sure the names you enter exactly match your passport as this cannot be changed once you have completed your booking.

If you are a member of the carrier’s frequent flyer program, Emirates Skywards, provide your membership number to earn points on your flight. Step 6: Verify your student status

Europe can provide a fulfilling and benefit-loaded life for older folks

American retirees looking to move overseas often wonder how they’ll be regarded in their new home abroad.

I’ve recently earned senior status myself in many countries, and from my vast anecdotal understanding to my own newly acquired experience, I can assure you that you have nothing to worry about as a senior moving overseas.

In fact, just the opposite.

You’ll find that as a senior in many places around the world, you’ll be welcomed with favorable laws, discounts, priority lines, and special visa incentives, as well as being treated with more respect on a day-to-day basis.

The United States has a unique perspective on age. Youth is equated with more societal value and is often seen as the most significant thing a person can bring to the table.

There’s a reason it’s been made illegal to discriminate against those over 40 in the hiring process in the States—because those under that mark are often given a societal edge.

Still, employers may have internal policies that prevent those over a certain age from being hired.

The American Psychological Association goes so far as to claim that “ Ageism is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices. ”

But that doesn’t have to be the case. Look across the U.S. border to Europe, and you might be pleasantly surprised at the differences in the ways seniors are perceived.

Here are my top recommendations for a fulfilling and benefit-loaded retiree life in Europe.

With long-established social systems that consider care for its citizens to be an inherent right, Europe has lots of security nets in place for the elderly.

Plus, kids are generally taught to respect older people. Manners and formality are valued quite highly, especially in Northern Europe, and family inclusivity across generations reigns in the south.

You’ll notice more seniors out and about in Europe, living active and social lives, particularly around the Mediterranean, where the culture is similar to that of Latin America in respect to family values.

In Greece, you might even be referred to as geronda or gerontissa —literally, old man or woman. Far from being an insult, this is a term of endearment and respect.

While there aren’t any senior-specific residency programs here, there are some good discounts to be had in addition to the cultural benefits. These discounts are available to all EU residents, regardless of which country they call home.

Even if you’re just a tourist in Europe, many discounts apply, including 10% off the Eurail pass for those 60 and over.

Here are four senior-friendly destinations I recommend on the Continent.

Portugal offers a great climate, a wealth of history, vast entertainment options, cosmopolitan cities, a stunning coastline, and superb beaches.

Home to over 700,000 foreigners, a reported 7,000 of them Americans , this country is one of the most popular choices for expat life in Europe.

Throughout Europe, there are priority seats for seniors and those with physical handicaps on public transport and usually in government buildings, and Portugal is no exception.

In 2016, Portugal’s parliament passed a law that makes priority service for people 65 and older (as well as people with disabilities or incapacities) mandatory among all public and private entities that provide in-person service to the public.

At banks, supermarkets, hospitals, and other venues, people (including visitors to Portugal) must give up their first-come, first-served priority to comply with this law. Non-compliance is punishable by fines of up to 1,000 euros.

Social support that helps older people meet their basic needs as well as maintain a good standard of living is organized by the government. At community centers , for instance, older people can take part in social, recreational, and cultural activities.

On top of this, discounts of 25% to 50% are available to those 65 and older on entertainment and transport costs, and these may be available even if you aren’t a resident. It never hurts to ask.

Home to more expats than any other country in Europe, Brits have been coming to Spain by the hundreds for years, and American expats number nearly 36,000 .

As in Portugal, you’ll find priority seating in public transport for seniors, and as of 65, you’re eligible for discounts on transport and entertainment.

There’s a card for retirees ( carnet de pensionista o jubilado ) that gets you the senior discount easily and that you may be able to claim under the age of 65 if you can prove you’re retired. Otherwise, just showing your ID to prove your age is enough.

Some institutions give discounts as early as age 60, so be sure to check the restrictions on an individual basis. Renfe, for example, the national train system, offers 25% to 40% off ticket prices to those 60 and older (with the purchase of a 6-euro Tarjeta Dorada card, which, by all accounts, pays for itself within a trip or two).

Supermarkets and food vendors of all types will deduct IVA (sales tax) from seniors’ purchases. Gyms offer senior rates, as do some phone and internet companies.

When it comes to hotels and other businesses, be sure to ask if any discount is offered, as some companies give special rates of their own accord. I’ve seen hotels and travel companies offer 30% off as of age 55.

Anecdotally, Spain is one of the most generous countries when it comes to giving senior discounts, so even if there’s no special price listed, be sure to ask if one is offered.

Occasionally, these may be limited to EU residents, but Spain has the best track record for extending senior rates to those of all nationalities, although you may find that if you’re not an EU citizen, the discount is given at the discretion of the ticket office.

No one takes retirement and its benefits more seriously than the French, and they protest regularly to defend their retiree rights here.

Culturally, children are trained to respect their elders in France, and la politesse (manners) are paramount to society.

Throughout the country, retirees enjoy their leisure from the age of 60 or 61 and avail of discounts of 30% to 50% on transportation, cheaper tickets to cinemas, theaters, museums, and monuments,

For a subscription fee of 44 euros (or 54 for a couple), the Reduc-Seniors card gives access to dozens of discounts from 5% to 52% off on everything from entertainment and spas to shopping, hotels, and travel for those 55 and over.

Little-known Slovenia is an underrated gem that shares the Adriatic Sea with Italy at a fraction of the cost.

Those 65 and over, or those who can show they are retired, are offered free bus and train rides nationally, with deep discounts given when crossing the border.

Many hotels, travel companies, and tour operators also offer senior discounts to EU residents over 65.

Entertainment also comes with discounts, up to 50% off for many tourist sites and museums.
