Destination Must-See's

Morocco ms1

Rick’s Cafe:

Featured in the blockbuster movie Casablanca from 1942, a visit to this restaurant is sure to spark your nostalgia. Feel like you’ve stepped into the movie as you surround yourself in the scenery reminiscent of the film. Although this is a recreation, not where it was filmed, your imagination will take hold as you watch the film on repeat and get a taste of what it was like back in the day.

Morocco ms2

Casablanca:

Morocco’s largest city, main port and most cosmopolitan city, this bustling metropolis and economic hub is sprinkled with tree-lined parks and charming colonial architecture. Its most famous landmark is the elaborate Hassan II Mosque, one of the world’s largest mosques built on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Morocco ms3

Mud brick homes:

These homes have been used throughout the world but are extremely popular in the Middle East, India and North Africa. A mud brick is made of mud or clay that is mixed with straw and hardened by baking it in the sun or a kiln. It is very inexpensive and is environmentally friendly. And most importantly, keeps houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Morocco ms4

Moroccan people:

The Berber people are Morocco’s original inhabitants but it has been touched by many cultures because of its location. As a result, its people are amongst the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. Today, it is considered an Arab nation, but you can see the diversity of the country, particularly in the variety of languages spoken – French, Spanish, Arabic and Berber dialects.

Destination Must-Do's

Morocco md1

Enjoy the cuisine:

When visiting Morocco you have to try a local favorite – stuffed bread. It is comparable to a flat bread sandwich in America with a Moroccan touch. This savory meal is filled with traditional fillings including beef or lamb suet, onions, parsley, and Moroccan spices – ginger, white pepper, coriander, turmeric, allspice, and cinnamon.

Morocco md2

See the Markets:

Souks, local markets, immerse you in the culture of morocco. Every Moroccan town has a souk quarter typically named after the day of the week they are open. No matter where you are you will find busy aisles lined with vendors selling many types of products – rugs, jewelry, metals, wood and pottery, clothing, leather goods and fresh food.

Morocco md3

Visit Rug Makers:

Traditionally, Moroccan rugs were hand woven and tied by the Berber tribe women and can take up to a year to complete. Some rugs are made as a floor covering and others are woven to hang from the wall like a tapestry. Rug designs typically depict a piece of history passed down from generation to generation, or tell the story of the weaver’s life, representing things from femininity to spirituality.

Morocco md4

Feed the Monkeys:

Learn all about MonkeyWatch, a primate eco-tourism, anti-poaching conservation program run by the Moroccan Primate Foundation in Ifrane National Park. It works to protect the Barbary apes and macaques that live in the forests of the park. Visitors will even get a chance to feed these wonderful creatures.

Expert Advice

diana

If you have some extra time before your tour begins to explore Casablanca, you’ll find plenty to do! Venture out to Safi, a port that has been of importance since Roman times, and view its grand ramparts and the fortress of Dar el Bahar.

Morocco e2

You’ll find many unique gifts in the souks (local markets). When venturing out during the day, it is typically very warm so be sure to wear loose, breathable but conservative clothing. In Moroccan culture, long skirts or slacks would be appropriate, but please no short hemlines, tank tops or tight fitting clothing.

Morocco e3

You’re in for a treat as you discover the flavors of Morocco! Be sure to try fish tagine, a mqualli (or sauce made with ginger, saffron and oil) combined with chermoula, olives and preserved lemons to add some zest and extra flavor!

Moroccan Sahara Discovery

Morocco - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Morocco is an exotic country - from ancient towns to chaotic cities, from remote villages to gorgeous coast, there are so many sights to see.

Morocco is an exotic country that never stops amazing you with its sights and surrounds. From ancient towns to chaotic cities, from remote villages to gorgeous coastal resorts, the country presents a variety of things to see and do that are sure to cater to all kinds of travelers.

Beautiful golden sand beaches, a long coastline that borders the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, four majestic mountains, vast open expanses of the great Sahara Desert, exotic vineyards and cascading rivers; some of the many beautiful things a tour to Morocco willoffer. Once you’re done with that natural beauty, you can also choose from urban explorations, desert towns such as Ouarzazate (yes, this is the town featured in movies like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Kingdom of Heaven).

Tour Highlights

  • Stroll the blue streets of Chefchaouen
  • Ride a camel through the Sahara Desert
  • Shop in the leather bazaar in old Fes
  • Watch snake charmers at the Djemma el Fna square in Marrakech
  • Relax in the steam bath of a traditional hammam

Travel Tips

  • Exchanging money before your trip can be difficult due to Morocco’s currency laws that prevent you from bringing more than 1000 Moroccan Dirhams in or out of the country (the equivalent of about US$106). Set aside time at the airport upon arrival to exchange your currency.
  • Visitors, like Moroccans, are expected to dress conservatively, especially women. Cover your shoulders, knees and chest as much as possible.
  • Always ask permission before taking photographs of locals, particularly in rural areas. Some believe cameras can capture a person’s soul using black magic, so asking is always a respectful gesture.
  • Be sure to pack layers, as temperatures can drop drastically at night, particularly in the winter. At the same time, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in the summer!
  • As a Muslim country, Friday is the weekly holy day in Morocco. Many shops will be closed on Fridays (particularly after midday) so locals can attend prayer, so buy what you need beforehand.

Morocco has seasonal weather so please do check up on the  best time to visit Morocco  before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Morocco, do check out our Morocco Travel Guide for more information.

Rabat in Morocco

Morocco — Top destinations to visit

  • Blast through the Moroccan Sahara Dunes:  Covering 30 percent of the African continent, the Sahara Desert is one of Morocco’s top attractions. Explore the Moroccan Sahara Desert as there are endless adventures and activities you can enjoy in this sea of sand. From multi-day camel treks and sandboarding through the shifting dunes to spending nights beneath the stars at a Berber desert camp, the Sahara is a smorgasbord of fun adventures.
  • Visit ancient tanneries in Fez: The ancient art of tanning leather in Fez has changed little since the 11th century. The unmistakable smell of the tannery pits floats in the air for miles. Visit Fez which is home to three vast tanneries that create one of Morocco’s most extraordinary sights. The city’s largest and oldest tannery is the Chouara Tannery. Located in the Fes el Bali near the Saffarin Madrasa, the facility is a sight to behold, with its hundreds of stone vats filled with leather. You will be given a sprig of mint to place in your nose to mask the smell but be prepared for an assault on the senses. A guide will take you through the tannery, and you will be able to get up close to watch the whole medieval process.
  • Shop for souvenirs at Jemaa el-Fna Marrakech: Located in the heart of Marrakech’s ancient medina (old city), Jemma el-Fna is a vibrant, bustling marketplace and the beating heart of the city. Dating back to the 11th century, the square is one of the main cultural spaces in Marrakesh and has been designated as a Unesco Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is the place to find a range of treasures, from leather goods and brass cups to handmade jewelry. In the evening, the square comes alive with storytellers, snake charmers, Chleuh dancing boys, magicians, and traditional medicine men. But do keep your wits about you and avoid carrying valuables when visiting Marrakech .
  • Wander the Blue Alleys of Chefchaouen:  Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco, explore the city of Chefchaouen , or Chaouen is famous for its extraordinary blue-hued buildings. Founded in 1471, the city only began to turn blue in 1492 when Jewish immigrants settled in the city and brought a tradition of painting buildings blue. Wander around the cobblestone lanes and marvel at the beauty of the blue buildings. Visit the 15th-century fortress of Kasbah with its red walls and dark dungeons. Sunrise and sunset are magical times of the day in this city. Be sure to capture them with your camera. Visit the pretty Ras El Maa waterfall for a cool dip in the fresh mountain water.
  • Relax in a Casablanca beach resort:  Kick back and relax at one of the luxurious beach resorts while you travel to Casablanca . This cosmopolitan city is often overlooked in favor of Marrakech, but it has so much to offer and beautiful beaches are just one of them. Boasting beautiful views of the ocean, most resorts here have gorgeous swimming pools, lush tropical gardens, and deluxe spas. You will also find fantastic restaurants serving top-notch local cuisine and buzzing bars.
  • Relish the magnificent architecture of Rabat: Explore Rabat , the capital of Morocco which is known for its striking and unusual architecture, and if you are a lover of design, then wandering around the city is a must. Blending ancient history and striking modernity, the city is home to an eclectic mix of Arabic and Western architecture ranging from the Abul Hassan Medersa dating back to the 1300s to the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rabat built in 1921. Stroll around the spectacular Andalusian gardens in the Kasbah of the Oudaias for a moment’s respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Morocco travel & tours

Where the sahara meets the sea.

Beaches and Berbers, medinas and mosques, souks and sand dunes... Morocco has variety and an exotic feel that has fascinated travellers since long before the modern traveller arrived. Affordable and only a short ferry from Spain, Morocco's mix of traditional and modern strikes the perfect balance between the intensely exotic and comfortingly familiar. Cities like Fez, Marrakech, and Casablanca evoke images of medinas, spice markets, and couscous, while the geographic extremes – from the Atlas Mountains to beach resorts to camels in the desert – make it eminently photogenic. The mad circus of Marrakech's Djemaa el Fna square, packed with incense, salesmen, and snake charmers, is so bizarre and entertaining you'll be looking for the hidden camera.

Morocco travel reviews

Morocco tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in morocco.

The local currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are very common in Morocco with Cirrus and Plus system cards are the most widely accepted debit cards. While ATMs are commonly available, there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work - it is important you check with your bank before departure and advisable to travel with more than one type of card. Visa cards are the most widely accepted credit cards, but are generally only useful for larger/expensive purchases. You should be aware when purchasing products or services on a credit card, that a fee usually applies. The foreign currency most commonly accepted in Morocco is the Euro. You will be able to exchange Euros, as well as GBP and USD at money exchange offices in major cities. Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money. A combination of cash (Euro/GBP or USD) and cards is best.

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

Small service providers

$ 3 usd/day.

A recommendation for tipping small service providers (such as restaurant and bar waiters, hotel staff, reception, cleaning personnel, bell boys, taxis and van drivers) is about $3 USD per day, depending on the quality of the service (this does not include your G Adventures CEO).

G Adventures CEO

$ 35 to $ 40.

At the end of your trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is also expected and appreciated. The precise amount is entirely a personal preference, however $35-40 USD per person per week can be used as a general guideline.

Packing for Morocco

You will be on the move a lot, so our advice is to pack as lightly as possible. We highly recommend using a backpack or light sports bag, whichever you find easiest to carry, plus a small daypack. Luggage space on public transport is limited. You must be prepared to carry your own bags and be comfortable carrying them between transport and hotels (max. 15-20mins walking), hopping on and off trains and public buses and up and down stairs.

People Also Ask

How much does an average morocco vacation cost.

On average, a Morocco vacation lasting a little over a week will cost you approximately $140 USD. Prices per day start at around $67 USD per person – TourRadar's most popular Morocco tours cost around $147 USD per day, per person.

What is the cheapest month for a vacation in Morocco?

The cheapest time for travel to Morocco is from November to March, and this is usually because of the pleasant weather. The only exception to these months is December when travel generally costs a lot more.

What is the ideal Morocco itinerary for seven days?

If you're travelling to Morocco for seven days, you'll want to spend a couple of days in Marrakesh, about two days exploring Ourika Valley and the Atlas Mountains and then leaving some time to visit Ait Benhaddou and Essaouira.

What is the ideal itinerary for 14 days?

In fourteen days you can cover a lot of ground in Morocco and still find time to relax. We recommend visiting each of the following places: Casablanca, Rabat and Meknes, Volubilis, Fes, Midelt, Sahara Camp, Todgha Gorge, Ait Benhaddou, Aroumd, Essaouira and Marrakesh. You can also learn how to spend two weeks in Morocco by  reading this story .

What is the best tour company for Morocco?

Our Travel Experts recommend operators like G Adventures, On The Go Tours and Busabout for Morocco. For hiking and trekking in the Atlas Mountains or for Mount Toubkal, we suggest Exodus Travels. Check out the full list of the  best Morocco travel companies here . Our team also suggests considering this Tour of the Year winner,  Morocco Joy Travel .

How can I book a Morocco vacation on TourRadar?

Browse through our selection of tours based on your preferences, and if you have several that you like, compile a wish list with your preferred options. If you're struggling to make a decision, give our Travel Experts a call, and we can help you figure it out.

Do people speak English in Morocco?

Morocco is an Arabic speaking country, and many residents also speak French as a second language. If you can, try to make an effort to speak their language; but it’s not your only option. English is emerging, especially in larger cities – so there will be times where you can use it to communicate.

Is Morocco a safe place for travel?

According to the 2019 Travel Risk Map (a travel planner based on safety), Morocco has a low-risk level. The only real concern is petty crimes (scams and pickpockets) on the streets, but if you apply necessary precautionary measures, your trip should go smoothly.

8 Ways to Choose the Perfect Tour Company

Last Updated: November 3, 2023

tour group posing with Nomadic Matt during a hike in the hills

That idea of tours being bad is an old and outdated perception.

These days tour groups have become more adept at the changing landscape. They feature smaller groups, more authentic experiences, a better environmental impact, and more local guides.

I love group tours.

Even though I am an independent traveler, I find group tours super fun, a great way to meet people, learn more from an informed guide, go to places you normally can’t, and wet your feet in travel. My first trip overseas was on an organized tour. I didn’t know the first thing about travel and that tour gave me the confidence to travel on my own. It was the taste test I needed to become hooked on travel. Tours give a lot of people time to adjust to the “travel lifestyle.”

Unlike in the past, today’s tours are eco-friendly, cater to all travel styles, over cheap, and make a point to use local transportation and guides. And many destinations (like Halong Bay, the Galápagos Islands, the Serengeti, Machu Picchu, Antarctica, Everest) are virtually inaccessible without an organized group tour!

In this article, I am going to tell you how to find the best tour company so you get one that is inexpensive, eco-friendly, provides local guides, and gives back to the local community:

1. Research the costs

With tour companies, it’s not always true that you get what you pay for. Many tour companies nickel-and-dime you, while some are really good at maximizing value for your every penny. Ask how your money is spent to find out if you are really getting the best value for your money. How much of your fee is their overhead? Are you paying for top-notch hotels but staying in two-star guesthouses? You want a company that is transparent with why prices are the way they are.

Moreover, make sure you ask if there are added fees to pay when arrive. Many companies require you to pay additional money when the tour starts or don’t include park or attraction entrance fees. That cheap tour won’t be so cheap if you have to pay for everything while you’re there!

2. Make sure you are the audience

Is the tour geared toward older couples? Young people? Families? You don’t want to end up on a loud Contiki tour full of drunk twenty-year-olds when all you want is a quiet holiday.

There’s a tour company for everyone — just make sure you don’t end up on one that isn’t yours. Most tour companies list their guest demographics on their “About” page, and you can usually see from the photos of their tours who goes on it.

You can also tell the audience based on accommodation: if it’s hostels or guesthouses, it’s usually for backpackers and budget travelers; if it’s fancy digs, it’s for older travelers and families.

This is very important because these are the people you’ll be traveling with so you want to make sure it’s the kind of people you are traveling with. I’m still friends with the people from my first tour in 2003 because they were people like me. The tour in Japan that was filled with older families? Not so much. We didn’t have much in common. Wonderful people but we didn’t connect.

So, I always look for tours that have my demographic in them.

3. Get local guides

Guides can make or break your trip. They are going to explain everything to you and keep the flow of the tour going. I don’t want them hiring some young kid, non-expert, or someone who doesn’t know the place well. I’ve been on tours where the guide was a walking encyclopedia, and on somewhere the guide was a glorified timekeeper.

Make sure the company uses knowledgeable, local guides. The guide should be a local or at least a long-term resident, know the local language, have travel experience, and know life-saving techniques.

If you are unsure about the guides, call the customer service line and ask them about their guides.

4. Safety record

Make sure the company follows all the proper safety requirements and is accredited by the local government, the government where they are registered, and any other appropriate trade organizations.

5. A balanced schedule

You’re paying for them to fill most of your day. How do they do that? Are they doing that? Do they have a lot of activities organized, or do they leave you to your own devices?

That said, you don’t want a schedule that is crammed with things to do. Make sure you get a schedule of all the activities and pick a tour that is balanced. Running around will leave you wishing you had a holiday from your holiday, but you don’t want to be sitting around all day, either.

I love taking small group tours because they generally have a good balance. Any tour that requires you to be on a huge bus and hits 6 cities in 5 days is not a tour to take!

6. Environmental impact

There’s a growing trend among travelers called ecotourism . It’s about more responsible travel, not only toward the environment but also toward the locals in an area. This means using local guides, hotels, and services, and making sure to reduce waste and your footprint on the local habitat.

Moreover, these companies tend to offer better and more interactive tours that also give you a good degree of autonomy.

I think it’s important to pick a company that provides great value and gives back to the place you are visiting. After all, did you go there to ruin it for others? Doubtful.

Check with groups like the International Ecotourism Society for a list of companies that have been certified “eco-friendly.” With so much money pouring into the industry now, you have a lot of companies fraudulently saying they practice ecotourism but end up being involved in terrible labor practices, animal abuse, and waste.

7. Group size

Tour companies that have smaller groups tend to be much more mindful of the environment and the impact they are leaving. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a group of 10-15 than it is in a group of 60. I don’t like to go on tours with more than 15 people on them. However, I have friends who love Contiki tours with 40-50 people. Know what you are getting yourself into, so you don’t find yourself with a group too small or too large for your tastes.

Just remember larger groups tend to stay at bigger, more impersonal accommodations (they can only accommodate the numbers), eat at more touristy restaurants, and tend to travel to more destinations quicker.

In my expert opinion, small group tours are the best.

8. Check their reputation

How have other travelers enjoyed their time? Look for online reviews to see what a company’s reputation is. It might not always be what they claim, and it’s important to find out the truth before you book.

Remember that MOST people only write a review if something goes wrong. Someone might give a tour company one star just because their eggs were runny. Find the average. Someone might hate a tour because the weather was hot. Seriously. These are actual negative reviews from the tour operator company, Thomas Cook:

“On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”

“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

“We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”

“No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

“Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

“When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

“We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

So how can you trust the reviews you read online?

Take them with a grain of salt. You can read reviews on websites TrustPilot . The approval rating should look like a bell curve but with more A’s and B’s than C’s. I look for companies that average 85% or higher (or 4 out of 5 stars). If a company is that highly rated, the negative reviews are probably just outliers.

My Recommended (Best) Tour Companies

Here are some of my favorite small, day-tour, or backpacker bus tour companies:

  • Take Walks – This is my favorite walking tour company. They run a wide variety of insightful and entertaining tours around Europe and the US. What makes them so good is they get you inside access to attractions and places you can’t get elsewhere. Their guides rock too!
  • Get Your Guide – A massive marketplace for tours, activities, and excursions. If you’re looking for something niche, you’ll find it here!
  • Devour Food Tours – My go-to tour company for tasty food tours around Europe and the US.
  • Kiwi Experience – A hop-on, hop-off bus tour company in New Zealand for backpackers!
  • Baz Bus – A hop on, hop off again bus tour company in South Africa for all travelers.
  • New Europe – Free walking tours throughout Europe.
  • Free Tours By Foot – Pay-what-you-like tours throughout Europe and the United States. They are one of my favorite free walking tour companies in the world!

THE #1 COMPANY FOR MULTI-DAY SMALL GROUP TOURS

When it comes to multi-day, multi-week tours (think trips through Morocco, sailing in the Galápagos, etc.), I highly recommend using Intrepid Travel .

Intrepid is my favorite and best small group tour operator out there! I really love their guides, their small groups, off-the-beaten-track itineraries, and their commitment to the local environment and community. I always have an incredible time on their tours. They are my favorite multi-day tour operator and the only one I use now (the picture at the top of this page is me on their Patagonia trip). Intrepid is environmentally friendly, uses local guides and transportation, doesn’t rush their tours, and are quite inexpensive. I don’t even consider anyone else when it comes to multi-day trips.

I love tours. They are a great way to meet people, get a local to add value and knowledge, and see places you can’t get to alone! I don’t take them often but I do take them. And, since I follow the above rules, I always have a good time. Some of my favorite travel memories were when I was on a group trip. If you follow my tips above, you’ll never go wrong either.

Morocco Tours & Holidays

People standing and laughing at the top of a hill overlooking an ancient town in Morocco

When people throw around the word ‘remarkable’, they’re probably referring to places like Morocco.

In a place where riding a camel over dunes at sunset is not unusual, where tagines spiked with saffron perfume the air and Amazigh people herd goats on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the word remarkable just doesn't cut it. Whether you're wandering the wind-battered port town of Essaouira, exploring the famous Kasbah in Aït Benhaddou or sleeping beneath the Saharan stars , a healthy dose of Maghreb hospitality will make a Morocco tour truly unforgettable.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 30°C) during the day and cool to cold (around 15°C) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honoured tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive and citrus are a well-known favourites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While travelling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilisation being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

2. Sahara Desert

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a 3 day Sahara Mini Adventure to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our 11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip, or make it a quick journey on our Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a 7 day Mount Toubkal Trek or a Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our 8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colourful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognise this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. S et against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

13. Tangier

T he coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Explore the Gateway to Africa on our 9 day North Morocco Adventure.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewellery

Jewellery fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewellery. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues and pop music add a contemporary flavour, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Is it safe to travel to Morocco?

Morocco is an extremely safe country to travel to as long as you abide by the local culture and customs.

Do I need a visa to travel to Morocco?

  • Australia: No - Not required
  • Belgium: No - Not required
  • Canada: No - Not required
  • Germany: No - Not required
  • Ireland: No - Not required
  • Netherlands: No - Not required
  • New Zealand: No - Not required
  • South Africa: Yes - in advance (in general, visa processing can take approximately 20 working days)
  • Switzerland: No - Not required
  • UK: No - Not required
  • USA: No - Not required

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas.

Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Americans and British citizens do not require a visa to visit Morocco for stays up to 90 days. All other nationalities should check with the Moroccan Embassy or Consulate in their country for up-to-date visa information.

What are the toilets like in Morocco?

Morocco's toilets are a mixture of modern flushable toilets and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Morocco?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Morocco. Your leader will advise where filtered water can be found, and some hotels provide it. For environmental reasons, we suggest bringing a carrying a reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic waste.

Is tipping customary in Morocco?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Morocco, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is generally standard practice. Taxi drivers and porters will also accept tips, 10 dirhams is usually sufficient in this case.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travellers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

What is the internet access like in Morocco?

Morocco's cities have internet access available in internet cafes and hotel lobbies. In some cases, free Wi-Fi can be accessed in public places. Less internet access is available in rural areas, so be prepared to 'disconnect' when travelling out of Morocco's big cities.

Can I use my mobile phone in Morocco?

Mobile phone coverage is generally very good in Morocco's cities and metropolitan areas, although coverage can be limited in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Morocco.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Morocco?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash.

What is ATM access like in Morocco?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When travelling out of the city, be prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travellers exercise discretion when travelling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travellers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Where will I stay in Morocco?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in Morocco you may find yourself staying in a:

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. The riad is the Moroccan traditional house, normally with two or more storeys around an Andalusian-style courtyard that contained a fountain. Riads were the stately city homes of the wealthiest citizens such as merchants and courtiers.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
