I had a great time in Mauritius on this 7 night break. The tour operator was very helpful and kept in touch throughout, and the day trip incorporated into the main trip was very enjoyable with a lovely tour guide. Transfers from and to the airport went very smoothly with friendly. I also booked 3 additional tours through the tour operator, all of which showed me so many sides to the island in terms of History, demographics, core industries. The hotel was more run down than expected from their website but the room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful given I seemed to be the only solo traveller there. My key disappointment was in the quality of the taste of the food at the hotel; desserts were done very well but the flavours for starters and main courses were lacking. Also I found it unusual that there was no bottled water provided as a matter of courtesy. I felt initially confined to the hotel for food but eventually navigated the local bus system which is very good to get to the main town of Grand Baie. This would have been great information provided at the start of my trip. Mauritius is a fabulous island, the beaches are beautiful, the local people have a wonderful vibe, the weather was excellent. Hallo liebes Team von journaway. Ich war gerade mit meiner Tochter auf Mauritius, la Réunion und Seychellen. Das erste mal, dass ich nicht individuell gereist bin. War vorher eher skeptisch, aber ich muss sagen, es war alles top von euch ausgewählt und prima organisiert. An manchen Tagen sind wir euren Vorschlägen gefolgt (zb piton de la fournaise) und das war auch immer prima. Otentic auf Mauritius ist super und auch das Bliss Hotel auf Mahe war sehr toll. Top Lage und sehr hübsch. Genau so schön war das Zimmer in Saint Pierre. Abzug würde ich geben für arrogantes und lahmes Personal im Dina Morgabine Hotelrestaurant und der Bar dort. Die Rezeption dort war aber super freundlich und der Pool groß genug zum Schwimmen. Dass der Typ bei Europarat am Flughafen in Saint Denis pro Kunden eine halbe Stunde und mehr gebraucht hat, war doof, aber dafür könnt ihr ja nichts. Ihr habt einen super Job gemacht und wir konnten jeden Tag voll genießen. Ich würde jedenfalls wieder bei euch buchen

Wir konnten mehrere Buckelwale vom Strand aus beobachten.Wo: Saint Gilles, La Reunion Ansonsten waren die Unterkünfte allesamt sehr schön. Das otentic Tent auf Mauritius hat uns mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail empfangen, man hat sich sehr wohlgefühlt. Auf La Reunion konnte man viel unternehmen und die Insel entspannt entdecken. Auf den Seychellen konnten wir uns noch 3 Tage erholen und einen Tauchausflug erleben. Mit dem Upgrade auf das bessere Hotel hatten wir auch noch etwas mehr Luxus zum Abschluss, was uns ebenfalls sehr zugesagt hat.

US agency identifies 3 soldiers who went missing during their service

O n Memorial Day, Americans honor those who sacrificed their lives for our country. Many of the families of those who went missing in action have not had the full opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones. The Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency is working to change that.

"It really is a fulfillment of a promise made to service members who we send off to combat and did not come home," said Kelly McKeague, the agency’s director.

More than 2.2 million airmen served in World War II, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Of those, 355 were Tuskegee Airmen who served overseas.

"It’s a storied unit, segregated unit that just did heroic things in World War II," McKeague said.

2nd Lt. Fred Brewer was one of 27 Tuskegee Airmen who previously was thought to be missing in action. The 23-year-old was the second from the unit to be identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

In October 1944, Brewer had departed from Ramitelli air base in Italy alongside 57 other fighters assigned to escort bombers to Regensburg, Germany. Brewer had attempted to climb above thick cloud cover when his engine stalled. He was thought to have crashed near Moggio Udinese, Italy. The story of what happened after the crash wouldn’t begin to come together until more than 70 years later.

"It happened almost serendipitously. It happened because an Italian villager took remnants of his plane back in the 1940s, built a memorial that one of our historians correlated to a set of remains that was moved from a German cemetery to an Italian cemetery, eventually to an American cemetery, where we disinterred the unknown remains of Lt. Brewer," McKeague said.

In December, Brewer was given a proper burial and laid to rest in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

"These are cases that weren't able to be resolved after the wars. And so here we are with our historians , our scientists, searching, finding and then hopefully identifying," McKeague said.

The Moggese Historical Photographic Archive in Italy says a ceremony will be held for Brewer in October, near the Italian town where he died.

"It’s our ability to use historical references and research scientific technologies to hopefully put a name and a face to a set of remains and return them to their family," McKeague said.

Last Memorial Day, a funeral was held for Korean Medal of Honor recipient Army Cpl. Luther Story after the agency identified his remains. In late 1950, at just 19 years old, Story gave his life defending against enemy soldiers so that his comrades could escape.

"During the withdrawal the company was attacked by such superior numbers that it was forced to deploy in a rice field," Story’s Medal of Honor inscription reads. "Realizing that his wounds would hamper his comrades, he refused to retire to the next position but remained to cover the company's withdrawal. When last seen he was firing every weapon available and fighting off another hostile assault."

Story was just 16 years old when he enlisted in the Army; he convinced his mother to forge his paperwork.

"At 19, he does that valor, that heroic action, thereby allowing his unit to escape to safety," McKeague said.

Story was born in Georgia to sharecroppers who worked at various farms in the middle part of the state. One of the farms they worked at belonged to former President Carter’s father.

Carter had started hospice care when Story was identified in April 2023 and was told Story would be returning to the U.S.

"When he was told that Luther Story was coming home. He just got the biggest smile and said, ‘I remember that young man,’" McKeague said.

Active wars make it difficult to immediately identify those killed in action. As conflicts wind down, investigators must work through environmental factors and foreign governments.

"Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are very challenging. The acidic soil degrades remains, almost destroys them, and oftentimes our teams are only finding teeth," McKeague said.

Air Force Col. Ernest De Soto, 37, flew an F-4D Phantom II during the Vietnam War.

"He was born from San Francisco. He was a phenomenal athlete, had a partial scholarship to Stanford. His parents could not afford Stanford, so he enlisted in the Air Force," McKeague said. "[He] qualifies to go to pilot training, becomes a fighter pilot, finds himself in Vietnam."

He was last seen in 1969. His plane went missing as he was returning from a canceled strike mission near Quang Nam Province. The lead aircraft in his unit noticed De Soto was not in sight and immediately began an aerial search without success. Teams were unable to search the ground because of the ongoing fighting.

In 1995, a Joint Field Activity team located the crash site in the Giang District. Investigations at the site continued until 2020. After a recovery mission and further DNA testing, De Soto was finally accounted for in March 2023.

"In the case of Col. De Soto, we just had to keep sending teams back to either investigate the site, excavate the site," McKeague said. "Especially with these aircraft losses oftentimes coming off of radar, no one knows the last known location. And so really it's almost rolling the dice in some cases."

There are still 72,000 soldiers missing from World War II , 7,500 from Korea and 1,500 from Vietnam. Of those 81,000, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency believes 38,000 will be recoverable.

"Every single one has a unique story to it," McKeague said. "Whether it's Lt. Brewer, whether it's Cpl. Story, or in the case of Col. De Soto."

American Airlines Backtracks, Will Allow Travel Agency Customers to Keep Earning Miles

American Airlines tried to drag an entrenched industry toward the airline's vision of a more productive distribution future. But the financial hit stung.

Online and offline travel agencies had faced a July 11 deadline: That’s when flyers buying American Airlines tickets on certain booking sites would have no longer been able to earn AAdvantage Miles.

But American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said Wednesday that the airline has dropped the idea. It was part of an overall retreat in American’s direct-booking strategy as it faces softness in close-in bookings and a weaker financial outlook.

“Next month, we were going to differentiate who earned AAdvantage Miles and who didn’t, based on where they booked. That’s off,” Isom told investors and analysts at a Bernstein conference. “We’re not doing that because it would create confusion and disruption for our end customer, and we’re going to make sure that we take care. We’re listening to feedback.”

The plan had been that the airline would designate “preferred agencies” — who were required to book at least 30% of their flights through American’s New Distribution Capability — and customers of these online and offline travel agencies would have been able to continue to earn AAdvantage miles when buying tickets on these third-party sites.

Travel agencies that didn’t get the airline’s stamp of approval faced the prospect of losing lots of customers who would have had to book American flights on AA.com or a preferred agency.

The airline initially said it would designate preferred agencies by May 1, and later moved that deadline to July 11.

Travel Agency Reaction

Many agencies had no clue if they were going to make the cut.

Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors, had fought the airline’s distribution policies, and applauded the airline’s reversal.

“I’m grateful for American Airlines’ renewed recognition of the essential role that travel advisors play in facilitating air travel for our shared customers,” Kerby said. “I want to extend my thanks to American Airlines CEO Robert Isom for acknowledging its previous approach was flawed. Reversing the decision to withhold AAdvantage points and miles for agency bookings is a testament to the firm position that travel agencies hold in the airline distribution channel.”

Kerby said he welcomed the opportunity to work with American Airlines on a “responsible implementation of its NDC program.”

When the news came, ASTA was coincidentally conducting it annual national conference in Dallas, in the airline’s Fort Worth headquarters back yard.

American hasn’t definitively given up on direct distribution, however.

“We’re learning and adapting,” Isom said. “We know that NDC, modern retailing provides a better experience for the end customer. And we know that we will get there over time, but we have to go about it differently. We’re going to make it easier, we’re going to execute better and we’re going to do a lot more to try to bring people along with us.”

TSA at Buffalo Niagara International Airport gets new credential authentication technology to enhance security in time for the summer travel season

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. —  The Transportation Security Administration (TSA ) is prepared for the highest passenger volumes the agency has seen at airport security checkpoints nationwide during this summer’s travel season, which began this past Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day. TSA set records last week including the busiest day in TSA’s 22-year history when 2,951,163 people were screened at airport security checkpoints nationwide on Friday, May 24.   

“Here at Buffalo Niagara International Airport we are coordinating with the airport, airlines and other travel partners and we are ready to handle this summer’s busy travel volumes,” said Bart R. Johnson, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Upstate New York. “We strongly suggest that travelers get to the airport early. Additionally, if individuals have not flown out of Buffalo lately, they will see new credential authentication technology units at the checkpoint and we encourage travelers to follow the guidance that the TSA officers are providing.”

New technology that confirms the validity of a traveler’s identification (ID) and confirms their flight information in real time is now in use at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints at Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF).

This deployment is the latest generation of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) to verify the identity of travelers. First generation CAT units are designed to scan a traveler’s photo identification, confirm the traveler’s identity as well as their flight details. The new CAT units, referred to as CAT-2, have the same capabilities, but are also equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler.

CAT-2 compares the traveler’s photo on the ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the CAT-2 confirms the match, a TSA officer verifies and the traveler can proceed through the checkpoint, without ever exchanging a boarding pass. The photo is then deleted.

The CAT-2 units are equipped with cameras on tablets and are used to match the face of the person standing at the checkpoint with the face that appears on the traveler’s ID such as the person’s driver’s license or passport. The technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent documents at the security checkpoint. The photos are not saved and are only used to match the person standing at the travel document checking podium with the photo on the ID that is being presented.

“Identity verification of every traveler prior to flying is a key step in the security screening process,” said Bart R. Johnson TSA’s Federal Security Director for Upstate New York. “This technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent IDs such as driver’s licenses and passports at a checkpoint and it increases efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identification. We just want to ensure that you are who you say you are.”  

As an additional feature, the unit is touchless meaning that the passengers insert their ID and do not have to hand it to a TSA officer. Thus the units reduce touchpoints and speed the process. Travelers insert their ID, look at the camera and if the ID is validated, the traveler then proceeds into the checkpoint. Even with TSA’s use of these units, travelers still need to check-in with their airline in advance and bring their boarding pass to their gate to show the airline representative before boarding their flight.

“This latest technology helps ensure that we know who is boarding flights,” Johnson said. “Credential authentication plays an important role in passenger identity verification. It improves a TSA officer’s ability to validate a traveler’s photo identification while also identifying any inconsistencies associated with fraudulent travel documents.”

The system also confirms the passenger’s flight status by verifying that the individual is ticketed to fly out of an airport on that same day.

CAT-2 units have what is referred to as a “library” of IDs programed into them that allow the technology to authenticate more than 2,500 different types of IDs including passports, military common access cards, Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler ID cards, uniformed services ID cards, permanent resident cards, U.S. visas and driver’s licenses and photo IDs issued by state motor vehicle departments.

Photos captured by CAT-2 units are never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification. Travelers who do not wish to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process.
