Things to Do in Marilog/ Buda, Davao: Eat and Visit The Mojicans

Just an hour drive from downtown Davao, you will reach a cold, foggy highland boundary of Davao and Bukidnon in Marilog District known to many as Buda.

marilog tourist attractions

While we can’t go so many places during the pandemic, Buda has become a respite to many who feels suffocated by the congested city air. With this, many restaurants and coffee shops have opened to local tourists and to many who simply wanted to dine on a refreshing sight of nature. If you have visited here a couple of times, The Mojicans should be a familiar sight with their location just at the side of the road.

How to reach The Mojicans

Since Buda is a long road and the only means to navigate would be through landmarks. Coming from Davao City, it should be on the right side of the road, which is about a kilometer away from Epol. If you reach the Eagle Monument landmark, you have driven about a kilometer past The Mojicans already.

The helpful Google Maps should be able to guide you well.

The Food and Venue

Let’s get this straight. The Mojicans isn’t my favorite resto in the Buda area mainly because I am a huge fan of authentic taste. The dishes here are somewhat fusion and are adapted to suit Filipino taste (which I don’t think is bad, it’s only a matter of preference). Food is okay but I would want to try other dishes and visit again. My friends’ dishes were also so-so according to them.

The variety of food is also very good but oftentimes, they would run out of ingredients. There is a lot to choose from as alternatives.

The place is also homey and of course, buda-feels with its cold and refreshing nature. They have a very clean comfort room, a good number of parking spaces, and a wonderful garden where you can take some photos with your friends.

When to visit The Mojican and Buda area?

The best time to visit would be on weekdays where not too many people visit. You should not miss buying fresh vegetables at the Marilog community market on your way home. The veggies are certified fresh and very cheap too!

Please note that from time to time, Task Force checkpoint may sometimes have long queues so be early and come back home early too. Whilst traveling restrictions have been eased out, please volunteer ourselves to protect us, our families and others from the virus. Stay safe while staying sane!

Unforgettable Trek to Khilakobah Falls: Your Guide to Marilog’s Hidden Gem

Traveling is more than just seeing new places; it’s about creating memories and sharing experiences with those you love. Our latest adventure took us to Khilakobah Falls, one of the seven majestic falls in Marilog, Davao Del Sur. This DIY trip was an unplanned yet thrilling journey shared with my partner Barry, and our friends Berna and Boom.

The Journey Begins

Our excitement was palpable as we set off from Davao, the journey taking us approximately three hours to reach Marilog. The road trip was filled with laughter and anticipation, as none of us had visited Khilakobah Falls before. Upon arrival, we quickly realized that the real adventure was just beginning.

The Trek to Khilakobah Falls

From our drop-off point, we embarked on a trek that lasted about an hour and a half. What made this hike particularly special were our tour guides – a group of local kids. Their knowledge of the terrain and enthusiasm added a unique charm to our journey. They navigated us through the lush landscape with ease, sharing stories and pointing out interesting sights along the way.

Nature's Symphony

As we neared Khilakobah Falls, the sound of cascading water grew louder, mingling with the symphony of nature. The final stretch of our trek was steep but manageable, and the sight that greeted us was worth every step. The falls were a breathtaking sight, their waters flowing gracefully into a clear pool below. The area was pristine, and the serene atmosphere was punctuated only by the sound of water and the occasional bird call.

Embracing the Moment

Standing before Khilakobah Falls, we felt a sense of accomplishment and peace. We spent our time exploring the area, taking photographs, and simply soaking in the natural beauty. The kids, who had guided us so adeptly, joined in our excitement, their laughter echoing against the backdrop of the falls. We enjoyed a refreshing dip in the cool waters, a perfect way to relax after the trek.

Reflections on the Experience

Our trip to Khilakobah Falls was more than just a hike; it was a journey of discovery and connection. The unplanned nature of our adventure made it even more memorable, reminding us that sometimes the best experiences come from spontaneity. Sharing this journey with Barry, Berna, and Boom, and guided by the wonderful local kids, made it a day we will always cherish.

If you’re looking for a destination that offers both adventure and tranquility, Khilakobah Falls in Marilog, Davao Del Sur, is a must-visit. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or simply looking for a day of exploration, this hidden gem promises an experience that will leave you in awe of nature’s beauty.

Travel Tips:

Preparation:  Even for an abrupt trip, pack essentials like water, snacks, and a first aid kit.

Footwear:  Wear comfortable hiking shoes as the trek can be steep and rugged in parts.

Local Guides:  Engage with local guides – they offer invaluable knowledge and make the hike more enjoyable.

Respect Nature:  Leave no trace behind; carry your trash and respect the natural environment.

Happy hiking!

BUDA TRAVEL GUIDE: PLACES TO VISIT + ITINERARY & BUDGET + TIPS

One of the things I love about Davao is that it has a lot of attractions to offer – from island to highland. For instance, with just a 10-minute barge ride from Sasa Port, you can already enjoy pristine beaches in Samal Island. An hour or two drive from the city proper, you can experience the refreshing mountain breeze in Eden, Bayabas, Toril. Or be mesmerized by the stunning landscape of Buda in Marilog District.

Speaking of Buda… Just a two-hour drive from the city proper, you can reach this tourist destination that many consider as the Baguio of the South. I guess, by now, you already have an idea why. Yes, you are right – because of its cold temperature.

Just this September, my friends and I went for an overnight stay in Buda. It was a weekend and a perfect time to relax, to unwind.

CONTENT AT A GLANCE

Accommodation In Buda

marilog tourist attractions

We were 14 all in all and so we were looking for accommodation that could house our group. And, luckily, we stumbled upon a vacation house that we thought an ideal accommodation for us – Buda Vista Vacation House. Indeed, it was a perfect place for our stay. It was big, with more than enough space for all of us. It also has all the necessary household items – for cooking, for entertainment, for sleeping, etc. And, to top all that, we were treated with the best panoramic highland view. It was a relaxing vacation, indeed.

Buda Vista Vacation House charged us Php 8000 for an overnight stay (1 pm check-in; noon checkout, the following day) good for 10 people. We just added Php 300 per person to accommodate the remaining 4.

Attractions In Buda

Seagull mountain resort.

marilog tourist attractions

Just a few kilometers from Buda Vista Vacation House, there lies an inland attraction that is perfect for a day tour or an overnight stay – the Seagull Mountain Resort . It has waterfalls, swimming pools, and other amenities that are perfect for family gatherings, for friends weekend getaway, retreat, etc. The entrance fee is only 200 pesos per person (discounted entrance fee for children) and you can already enjoy the waterfall and the swimming pools, among other attractions.

Taglucop Strawberry Hills

marilog tourist attractions

This is a newly-established strawberry farm with a restaurant that serves farm-to-table menu items (they are all fresh!). You get to enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings as well and the cool mountain breeze. However, this attraction only accepts guests with prior booking. So make sure you get your confirmed reservations before your visit.

When we went there, we didn’t have prior reservations, so we didn’t experience their restaurant. Luckily, the management was generous to let us go inside to see the farm and take some photographs.

The farm has no entrance fee.

marilog tourist attractions

Perhaps, this is one of the most popular attractions in Buda as it has been featured on TV and travel blogs countless times.

If you want to experience farm vista view, not to mention fresh vegetable produce, then you should not miss visiting BEMWA Farm. This place also sells a variety of snacks – some ingredients are sourced from the farm itself.

It should be mentioned as well that the farm offers horseback-riding at a fee – a hundred pesos or so.

No entrance fee at Bemwa Farm.

Parking fee is 50 pesos.

marilog tourist attractions

Okay, if you are going to Buda for a day tour only, then it would be impossible to include this to your itinerary without compromising your tour experience. But if you do, it is recommended that you go for a 2-day Buda vacation.

Hills View is located pretty far from the national highway (Davao-Bukidnon Road). It would also entail a grueling habal-habal ride. If you are riding on a private car, make sure it is the bigger one; smaller cars intended for urban driving is not recommended there.

Hills View is popular for its sea of clouds, panoramic mountain landscapes, and cool and refreshing air.

The best time to catch the sea of clouds is early in the morning (around 6 to 7). So, if you want to include this to your itinerary, be there as early as 5 am, which means, you depart from Davao City as early as 3 am – if you schedule it on the first day. If you schedule it on the second day, you might just want to stay overnight at the Hills View on the first day.

The entrance at the Hills View is Php 50. There are available accommodations for an overnight stay there.

You can call 09173146969 or 09271325060 for inquiries.

Buda Sample Itinerary

Option 2 (with Hills View included)

2-Day Buda Itinerary

Sample budget (per person, diy, 2 days), tips you might find useful:.

  • Bring some food that does not get spoiled easily like adobo, fried meat, bread as food vendors might be scarce during the time of your visit. At the same time, you can save some amount.
  • Don’t forget to bring a liter of water or two, or even more to stay hydrated and to ensure that you drink the water that you are used to.
  • You might be spending more on transportation most especially if you DIY, so haggle for lower fare as much as you can, particularly if a driver is charging you with a price that does not make sense anymore.
  • Bring insects repellent; you are outdoor most of the time so it is better if you have some level of protection against insect bites.
  • If you are vacationing with a group, it is better if you just hire a van. Contact Meanttogo via its FB page if you want to hire a van.

21. BEMWA FARM

Bemwa Farm. Best Tourist Spots in Bukidnon

Bemwa Farm is in Marilog District, Davao City,  but it is so close to the Bukidnon area that we decided to add it to this list since it is the most popular place for tourists to stop in Marilog. The Bemwa Farm is known for its fresh food and giving customers a unique chance to learn about farming. On the way to the farm, you drive through Buda, which is a part of Davao City where the weather changes from hot and humid to cool and dry.

Bemwa farm has a lot to offer its visitors, like a place to rest, take pictures, and fill up fresh vegetables from their garden. We don’t have to go to Baguio City just to pick strawberries. The Bemwa farm gives us the same experience. Aside from strawberries, they have rows of sunflowers, fresh organic products, and other herbs in pots that you can buy reasonably.

Bemwa Farm is now one of the must-see places in Marilog. It is a nice place to rest, take photos, and eat a lot. We suggest going early in the morning when there are few people. Enjoying the fog covering the farm is a cool thing to do—literally and figuratively.

These are the 21 best tourist spots in Bukidnon that will complete your Mindanao experience. From mesmerizing waterfalls to enchanting lakes, Bukidnon has it all.

Have you been to these Bukidnon tourist spots listed above?

marilog tourist attractions

It’s my first time to explore Davao City and I’m not expecting too much from it aside from it’s the hometown of our President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and the home of the famous King fruit, the durian. In my mind, what else I can do or visit in this city? I thought its just a clean city with just few attractions but I’m totally wrong, Davao City has a lot to offer to the world.  Davao is home to the majestic Philippine Eagle, the country’s pride and national bird which is considered as the largest eagle in the world. BEST TIME TO EXPLORE DAVAO CITY

The best time for explore Davao City is between December to February for it’s normally the coolest and driest time of the year. If you are fan of festivals, you might visit Kadayawan Festival in the month of August. During this month this is a bountiful harvest of fruits so the price of pomelo, durian and mangosteen are relatively cheap. Just make sure to reserve hotel room in advance for its the most popular time of the year. Bring extra load of patience also for many tourist flocks to join the festivity. I explored Davao in the month of December, the weather is fine and majority of the tourist attractions are not crowded.

HOW TO GET THERE

Located two hours south of Manila and Pampanga, you’ll be arriving at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport. I strongly recommend that you fly via Clark International Airport to avoid the hassle of long lines and traffic. Local and international flights are also cheaper via Clark compare to Manila airport. Worried about the transportation? P2P buses are available to and from Clark Pampanga. Check daily flights to Davao City via Philippine Airlines . Check current promo fares at www.philippineairlines.com .

MY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE

My travel in Davao City is one of my best for 2018! The Dabawenyos hospitality exceeded my expectations. Davao City’s tourist attractions are worth exploring, its rich culture, arts and history are interesting enough that will make you fall in love with this city. There is no doubt that Life is here in Davao City. Everything is here! No words can explain how I love my travel and I will definitely go back to explore more! 🙂

Thank you Davao City Government, Davao City Tourism Office, Philippines Airlines and ofcourse Davao Tourism Association(DATA)  for making my experience one of the best not only for 2018 but in my entire blogging journey so far!

Bemwa Farm: One of the Must Visit Tourist Spots in Marilog

The Bemwa Farm, Marilog, Davao City

The Bemwa Farm is one of the popular tourist attractions in Marilog. The farm is known because of their fresh produce and unique offers of agricultural farming experience to its clients. It offers some nice spots to rest, take photos, and eat heartily with your friends and family.

The farm is located at Barangay Salumay, Marilog District, in Davao City, Philippines. The drive to the farm is through Buda, a part of Davao City and it would take about an hour and a half drive or almost 2 hours depending on your vehicle’s traveling speed.

The Bemwa Farm is best visited early morning as fogs will embrace the farm, giving anyone a sight like Baguio City.

What makes the Bemwa Farm stand out is that the seeds they use for planting all come from the State of California, United States. They also have their own cafe where you can enjoy flavorful desserts, drinks, and delicacies like their famous strawberry taho, strawberry ice cream, and strawberry jam.

Apart from strawberry or sunflower picking activities, you can also avail yourself of their fresh organic products like lettuce and other potted herbs at affordable prices. Price negotiation is the key. =)

Who is the owner of the Bemwa Farm?

How to get to the bemwa farm.

If you have your own vehicle, keep an eye on the signboards going to the Hills View Mountain and Gethsemane Garden (just a few meters away from the eagle statue). Take a right turn and keep driving until you find or arrive at the Bemwa Farm. Don’t be shy in asking directions from the friendly people in the area.

Mindanao’s rainforests are home to the great Philippine Eagle, the country’s national bird and one of the largest eagles in the World. Visit the Philippine Eagle Center and meet the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. Here, the eagles are bred for eventual release into the wild. Resembling a typical rain forest, it’s a great place to get a feel of nature. There’s a number of other birds, mammals and reptiles as well, most of which are endemic to the country and some are considered rare.

What to Eat and Drink in Samal Island

While most known restaurants on the island are served in the resorts, there are quite a few stand-alone restaurants where you can dine in. Here are some recommended restaurants found on Samal Island.

Local Cuisine

The local cuisine in Samal Island is similar to what you can also have in Davao City and the rest of Davao del Norte. Make sure to make space for these mouth-watering dishes you can try in Samal Island.

Amik appears almost like pancit bihon but is made from cassava or corn and is crunchier, a little oily, and sweet. Local Muslims love having this during Ramadan.

Sutokil dish in the Philippines

Sutokil is a medley of fresh food sourced from the island. It could be seafood or land-based meat but prepared and served in a different way as its name suggest. Sutokil is contracted from the words: Sugba, which means grilled, Tola (boiled), and Kinilaw (marinated in vinegar).

So, when you order a Sutokil, expect to be served with a plateful of kinilaw na tuna (tuna ceviche), grilled liempo (pork belly), or fish or chicken tinola.

Cap your island-hopping tour with cold beers and a plateful of Pasayan. This dish of deep-fried shrimps cooked with flavorful oyster sauce is a great choice for an appetizer and finger-licking nighttime snack.

Piniritong Ikog Sa Bariles

Loosely translated as deep-fried tuna fish tail, this mouth-crackling dish is served with calamansi, vinegar, and soy sauce.

Imbaw is a clam soup cooked with a bevy of fresh vegetables that make your bowl pop with color and burst with rich taste.

Sinugbang Bagaybay

Sinugbang bagaybay or grilled tuna fish roe is a fish roe of a female tuna, that is served with a side dish of atchara and salted egg. It also comes with a special sauce. It is one of the appetizing dishes you can order at the many seafood restaurants in Samal Island.

Sinugbang Bodboron

This is another sumptuous seafood dish composed of grilled mackerel and served with a side dish of eggplant salad, relish of tomatoes, and spicy vinegar dip.

Recommended Best Restaurants and Bars

The gastronomic scene in Samal Island is mostly comprised of fresh seafood and farm to table ingredients. Rest assured, you will find plenty of healthy food choices here.

Meat lovers need not worry as well because grilled meat dishes—among other all-time favorite Filipino food —are also widely available on the island.

Still underrated compared to the food scene in Boracay, El Nido, Siargao, and Bohol, yet the culinary scene of Samal is starting to get the attention of foodie travelers.

To help you fuel up for the many tiring yet thrilling activities on the island, here are some highly-recommended restaurants for your food exploration of the island.

The Bahay Kubo Restaurant

This hidden foodie gem is located on the coastal town of Penaplata and tucked in a narrow path near the beach. This restaurant, despite owned by a Swiss couple, radiates with a mouthwatering fusion of Filipino and European cuisine.

The restaurant brings an island feel thanks to its open-air rustic design where you can feel the cool wind as you feast on your food. Must-tries include tuna steak, roast beef, fried potatoes, beef meatballs, and basically the rest of the menu.

Farmer’s V Resort and Grill

Serving locally brewed coffee, healthy snacks, and local cuisine, this is another all-time favorite dining place on the island of Samal. Cooking with ingredients from local farms, this is a favorite place of bikers exploring the island.

Aznebo Grill & Restaurant

Facade of Aznebo Grill & Restaurant

If you're looking to load up after a day of island hopping and fun in the sun, then this is a great choice.

The Spice Hut

The Spice Hut is a two-story kubo (nipa hut)-styled restaurant that serves a fusion of Indian, Thai, and Filipino cuisine. One of the restaurant's most popular dish is a fresh lapu-lapu—usually 2-3 feet long—and cooked like an Indian curry fish.

Other must-tries include Thai red curry beef, kedgeree (smoked fish and curried rice with egg), nasi goreng, and Indian prawn curry.

HABAK Habhaban sa Babak

15 Best Things to Do in Moscow (Idaho)

In a landscape of fertile rolling hills on the Idaho-Washington boundary, Moscow is the county seat of Latah County and the home of the University of Idaho, founded in the early 1890s.

The city has a cozy downtown with historic brick buildings from the turn of the 20th century and lots of community events, like a weekly farmers’ market spring through fall, and a bustling artwalk in June.

As you would expect, the University of Idaho plays an important role in the city’s cultural, social and sporting life, and many of the attractions in this list are connected to this institution in some way.

The surrounding Palouse landscape of rambling hills decked with wheat fields, can be explored on two paved rail trails, heading out east and west of the city.

1. University of Idaho Arboretum & Botanical Garden

University of Idaho Arboretum & Botanical Garden

The loveliest feature of the university campus’ verdant grounds is the UI Arboretum & Botanical Garden.

You’ll find it in 63 acres, just south of the President’s Residence and the university’s golf course, with undulating Palouse hills in the background.

Open to the public with free admission, the arboretum was laid out on a former hayfield in the early-1980s, although its origins go back way before, to the early 20th century.

In fact you can check out the site of the first arboretum, planted in the 1910s with majestic specimen trees, including a giant sequoia, on the north side of the President’s Residence.

As for the “new” arboretum, this counts more than 17,000 plants from over 2,400 taxa, mostly organized into geographical regions, including Europe, Asia and Eastern and Western North America.

On the south end are exquisite display gardens for xerophytes, ornamental willows, irises and heather, as well as a butterfly garden, magical in summer.

2. Latah Trail

Latah Trail

Twelve miles long, this paved trail will take you east from Moscow all the way to the neighboring city of Troy.

The Latah Trail was completed in 2008 and is on the course of a dismantled BNSF railroad line that junctioned at Arrow, some 30 miles to the southeast.

The path is ten feet wide, allowing plenty of space for walkers and cyclists in summer, and snowshoers and cross-country skiers after snowfall in winter.

As this is a rail trail there are no difficult slopes but you’ll be guaranteed breathtaking panoramas of the Palouse, with tilled slopes interspersed with sweeps of coniferous forest.

In Moscow the Latah Trail merges seamlessly with the Paradise Path, in turn connecting with the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail, which we’ll talk about below.

3. Appaloosa Museum and Heritage Center

Appaloosa Museum and Heritage Center

The Appaloosa, identified by its colorful spotted coat, is a horse breed synonymous with the Palouse region, so it’s fitting that there should be a museum for it, right on the Idaho-Washington state line.

The museum shines a light on a variety of topics, like the history of spotted horses in art and literature, Appaloosas’ various coat patterns, and the importance of Appaloosas to the native Nez Perce people.

Display cases are loaded with interesting objects, from saddles to black and white photography and Native American artifacts. There’s also a hands-on area to keep children engaged, as well as a theater and an extensive library.

4. Moscow Farmers’ Market

Moscow Farmers' Market

Taking place on Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm, May through October, Moscow Farmers’ Market is now well into its fifth decade.

Right on Main Street, this is a celebration of the Moscow area’s farmers, artisans and musicians, giving them an opportunity to connect with the city’s residents and visitors.

For shoppers interested in food provenance the market is a chance to find out where your produce comes from and pick up tips about storage and preparation.

There’s a wide range of vendors for vegetables, fruit, plants, flowers, local grass-fed meat, pastries, honey, jams, cosmetics, home decorations, hand-forged knives and much more.

The market has live music most weeks, as well as freshly prepared food, from tacos to samosas.

5. Bill Chipman Palouse Trail

Bill Chipman Palouse Trail

Following the right of way of the old Union Pacific Railroad, the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail runs west from Moscow, crossing the state line and taking you to Pullman, Washington.

Pullman is the home of the flagship campus for Washington State University, the second-largest institution of higher education in the state.

Seven miles long, the trail, paved all the way, carries you through bucolic Palouse scenery, parallel to State Route 270.

There’s a shallow gradient, and you’ll come across rest areas and interpretive signs along the route. And while the landscapes are gorgeous, the trail also has an important practical use as a commuter route for cyclists between the two university campuses.

6. Prichard Art Gallery

Prichard Art Gallery

This outreach facility for the University of Idaho is located in downtown Moscow, and moved to its current location on Main Street in 1986.

The Prichard Art Gallery has a lively schedule of exhibitions, events and educational programming, receiving upwards of 17,000 visitors a year.

You can check out the creativity of members of the Idaho College of Art and Architecture, as well as temporary exhibits for local, regional, national and international artists in a whole spectrum of media.

The exhibits rotate at short intervals, so there’s always something fresh to see, while the gift shop sells unique pieces by artists and craftspeople from the area.

7. McConnell Mansion

McConnell Mansion

On leafy Adams Street, a couple of blocks east of Main Street, stands the palatial W. J. McConnell House.

In a Stick/Eastlake style, this elegant residence was built in 1886 for William J. McConnell (1839-1925), who served as Governor of Idaho from 1893 to 1897, after previously representing the young state as one of its first United States Senators.

The mansion is the headquarters of the Latah County Historical Society, and you can take a look around a series of themed period rooms, featuring authentic furnishings and appliances.

The society also puts on fascinating exhibits and learning events, often in partnership with the University of Idaho and always well worth attending.

8. Colter’s Creek Winery

Colter's Creek Winery

The rolling country south of Moscow has everything you need to make great wine, and in 2016 the Lewis-Clark Valley gained official AVA (American Viticultural Area) designation.

Colter’s Creek has a storefront and tasting room in Moscow, growing its grapes on the sunny slopes where the Potlatch flows into the Clearwater River.

Planted between the 1980s and 2010s these vineyards produce a wide variety of grapes, running the gamut from Riesling to Cabernet Sauvignon, for local handcrafted wines that have earned widespread acclaim.

The stylish Moscow tasting room is in Main Street’s Hattabaugh building, constructed in 1890, and has a choice of estate wines on tap. Wine tasting classes take place regularly, to help you tell a Sangiovese from a Tempranillo.

9. Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre

Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre

On the National Register of Historic Places, this fine old Spanish Revival cinema has a history going back to 1926, and was founded as a vaudeville stage and silent movie house.

The current tiled facade, in a pared-down Art Deco style, has been in place since 1949, and up to the late-1980s this was downtown Moscow’s main movie theater.

Since 2000, the venue has belonged to the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre, which carried out thorough renovations in the 2010s. Come for classic, independent and foreign films, as well as a variety of community stage performances and other events.

10. Hamilton-Lowe Aquatics Center

Waterslide

Summers in Moscow wouldn’t be the same without this public outdoor pool, splash pad and water park, open June through September.

If you want to get your laps in, the Hamilton-Lowe Aquatics Center has a 25-yard, six-lane pool.

Meanwhile parents can bring children to the extensive play area, which features a toddler-friendly slide, tumble buckets, interactive equipment, slides for bigger kids and a small lazy river.

The center also has picnic tables, barbecues, lounge chairs and free Wi-Fi, as well as a full-service concession area, though you’re free to bring your own food.

11. Idaho Vandals

Kibbie Dome

The 16,000-seater multipurpose arena, Kibbie Dome is home field for several of the University of Idaho’s sports teams, all called the Idaho Vandals.

So depending on the time of year you can catch pulsating football, basketball (men and women), soccer (women), tennis and indoor track and field at this venue.

The Kibbie Dome was completed in 1971 as an open-air stadium, and was given its barrel-vaulted roof in 1975.

The football team competes in the Big Sky Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), returning in 2016 after 20 years bouncing around the Big West, Sun Belt and Western Athletic Conferences.

The Vandals’ golden age came between 1985 and 1995 when it reached the I-AA playoffs in ten out of 11 seasons.

If you’re wondering about the name, “Vandals”, it goes back more than a century, when UI’s feared basketball team played defense with such ferocity that they were dubbed the Vandals by the famous coach Hec Edmundson (1886-1964).

12. Ghormley Park

Ghormley Park

Bordered on the south side by Paradise Creek, Ghormley Park is the favorite destination for family fun and outdoor recreation in summer.

The park covers just over ten acres, a large section of which is in the shade of tall, mature trees.

This is where you’ll find the picnic shelter, fitted with BBQ grills, as well as a children’s playground.

Elsewhere there are amenities for baseball/softball, basketball and horseshoes. You can use the Paradise Trail, which traces the creek and connects a number of green spaces in Moscow, to get onto the Latah Trail on the east side of the city and the Bill Chipman Trail in the west.

13. Palouse Ice Rink

Ice Skating

You can hit the ice at this popular local rink on the southeast side of town. Resembling an aircraft hangar, the Palouse Ice Rink has a temporary look about it, and when we wrote this article was making strides raising money for a permanent complex.

There are regular public skate sessions early in the day, after school and in the evening, and skate rental is reasonably priced.

Also on the schedule are casual stick-n-puck sessions, pick-up hockey, drop-in late-night curling, league curling, Palouse Adult League Hockey and much more. Check the calendar for learn-to-skate sessions.

14. Moscow Artwalk

Street Performers

Beginning back in 2004, the Moscow Artwalk is a landmark on the Palouse calendar. On one Friday evening in June, more than 60 businesses and 100 artists around downtown participate in a vibrant cultural and artistic event.

Moscow Artwalk brings exhibitions of a wide variety, as well as live demonstrations by artists, workshops, live music, dance performances and food vendors, on Main Street and its intersecting streets.

You can take in this cultural feast on a self-guided trail, and there’s a passport system, with six stamps making you eligible for a prize draw. And if you miss something, many of the participating businesses also have Saturday hours.

15. Fondo on the Palouse

Fondo on the Palouse

The foundation responsible for the Latah Trail organizes this cycling event, normally staged on the last Saturday in June.

Fondo on the Palouse takes you out into the beautiful rolling Palouse landscape on a variety of group bike rides, all setting off from Moscow.

The Family Fondo is a 15-mile route from Moscow to Troy. If you want something longer but want to stay away from road traffic, there’s a 50-mile ride along the Latah and Bill Chipman Palouse Trails.

And finally the grand Moscow Fondo is a 100-mile tour of the region, passing through Troy, Deary, Princeton and Potlatch, crossing the state line to Pullman and Colfax, WA, before returning to Moscow.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

Catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, shop at the luxurious gum, make your way into lenin's mausoleum, spend an hour (or three) at red square, discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, ride the stunning moscow metro, explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, walk up and down arbat street, stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, wander around gorky park, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.
