Lian with its unwavering faith and rich history, is home to the Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint John the Baptist—a pilgrimage site and tourist attraction. The Lianeños’ deep devotion to Jesus Christ and the intercession of Saint John the Baptist led to the establishment of this revered church.

These well-preserved houses and infrastructures, shaped by the Spanish era, continue to narrate the town’s past. Some of these buildings served as barracks for the Japanese armed forces during World War II, silently embodying the resilience and adaptability of the Lianeños amidst challenging times.

History and Heritage

In the era of the Spanish inquisition, Batangas’ embrace of both local and Chinese traders left an indelible mark on its history.

Lian, a name that resonates through the ages, was born from a unique encounter between a Spanish inquirer and a Chinese merchant. Lost in translation, the trader, believing he was being asked for his own name, responded with “Li-An.”

Once a humble barrio under the wing of Nasugbu, the visionary leadership of the esteemed “Kapitan Isko Lejano” led to Lian’s emancipation from its mother municipality. With ardent determination, Lian transformed into an independent municipality, laying the foundations for its own governance in 1914-1915. It was during this time that Kapitan Isko Lejano assumed the mantle of the inaugural Municipal President, leaving an indelible mark on the town’s history.

The culmination of Lian’s ascent to autonomy arrived in 1933, when the resolute municipal government successfully negotiated the transfer of the entire Estate of Lian Colegio de San Jose from its original owner to the hands of the townspeople. This pivotal moment cemented the town’s dedication to education and communal growth.

However, the shadows of war cast a somber pall over Lian. On that fateful January 16, 1945, Japanese soldiers, entrenched in the confines of the renowned “Hacienda” (now St. Claire Academy) and Lian Elementary School, plunged the entire town into a zone of terror. The lives of 48 valiant guerrillas were ruthlessly extinguished, their sacrifice etched into the annals of Lian’s collective memory.

Yet, the dawn of hope arrived on January 31, 1945, as the American forces liberated the town from the clutches of oppression. In reverence to the indomitable spirit of the fallen 48, the people of Lian commemorate and jubilantly celebrate this day, forever honoring their unwavering courage.

In the grand tapestry of Lian’s heritage, its vibrant spirit finds its crescendo on the 24th day of June. The town fiesta unfolds in reverent homage to its beloved Patron Saint, Saint John the Baptist. With fervor and jubilation, the people of Lian unite, their hearts brimming with devotion and gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon their beloved town.

The rainy season starts in June and ends in November. When December comes, the people experienced a very cool dawn. The summer season on the month of March to the end of May.

Lian is a municipality in Batangas , just south of Nasugbu .

Caleruega is not just a church but a retreat center surrounded by lush scenery. Its main building is called the Transfiguration Chapel. This chapel has a nice colonial design and a peaceful ambiance. This is the most photographed part of the property and where most couples choose to wed.

Aside from the main building, you can visit the other interesting sections of the complex during your visit. Some of these are the Fountain Compass, the Tent Chapel of Transfiguration, St. Dominic’s Point, Kampo Terraces and Amphitheater, and the Dominicum’s grand stairway. Caleruega’s outdoor area also features a koi pond, a Japanese garden, plant nursery, a worm farm, a hanging bridge, and various walkways.

You can visit Caleruega Church on a day trip and spend a couple of hours exploring the property. However, since it’s also a retreat center, Caleruega is equipped with cottages, large halls, and a campsite to accommodate guests who wish to stay overnight. 

Fantasy World was meant to be the Philippine version of Disneyland. It’s supposed to be the largest and grandest theme park in the country. However, this ambitious project has remained unfinished. Fantasy World has never opened as a theme park. According to local stories and rumors, the Japanese owner had financial problems and, therefore, stopped the construction years ago. 

Despite being a failed project, Fantasy World is still a favorite Batangas tourist spot and a frequent filming location. Its large fairytale castle, medieval-themed structures, and sad story have managed to attract many tourists.

You can still access Fantasy World if you pay the minimal entrance fee. But it’s not a functional theme park, so there are no rides or shows. With its intact medieval architecture and lush surroundings, Fantasy World is still very scenic.

While here, you can walk around, enter the fairytale-like buildings and take photos. One popular spot in the abandoned park is the hanging bridge connected to two treehouses. You can climb to the top of the treehouses and enjoy the views of Batangas, including the Taal Volcano. 

Fantasy World is located along Diokno Highway in Lemery, Batangas. A local homeowners association is managing and operating the property. 

Taal Basilica’s official name is Basilica of St. Martin de Tours. It stands on top of a hill at the center of Taal Town. This basilica is huge; it is 96 meters high and 45 meters wide. It is often referred to as the largest Catholic Church in Asia. 

Taal Basilica was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Its Baroque appearance today is attributed to architect Luciano Oliver, who redesigned the church in 1856. 

The church’s main draws are its silver tabernacle and facade, which is comparable to the one at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Taal Basilica’s 26 classical columns at the entrance are indeed an impressive sight!

Taal Basilica is a popular wedding site and a favorite destination of devotees during the Catholic Lenten season.

When you enter, the basilica’s altar size will immediately impress you. This altar is 10 meters wide, 24 meters high, and lined with Doric columns with a Jesus Christ statue at the center. 

Taal Basilica is the main building in Taal Park, which has other notable landmarks like the Rizal College and the Escuela Pia: Taal Heritage Center.

Sombrero Island is one of the most visited islands in Batangas. From afar, the island looks like a dark hat jutting from the sea. Hence, it's named "sombrero," which means 'hat' in Spanish. The island is one of the best spots to snorkel in Batangas. It also has a beach composed of white sand and crushed shells. 

Sombrero Island is located off the coast of Anilao. Visitors usually take a boat tour to reach the island from Anilao’s shoreline. The boat ride from the mainland takes about 15 to 20 minutes. However, travel time may vary depending on sea conditions.

Mt. Maculot is one of the most well-known hiking spots in the Philippines . This mountain stands at 930 meters above sea level. The hike to the summit is rated 4/9 in difficulty level. Even though some parts of the mountain trail are slippery, steep, and muddy, a reasonably physically fit person can do the trek.   

Trekking to the top of Mt. Maculot usually takes about 5 to 6 hours. Some hikers start the climb before dawn to maximize sunrise views. 

Mt. Maculot is situated in Barangay Cuenca, Batangas. Before trekking, you will need to pay a fee and register with the local authorities. You also need to hire a trained guide to ensure a safe journey.

People hike to Mt. Maculot’s summit to enjoy some of the best views of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake. The Mt. Maculot trail features 14 resting camps or stations. These stations symbolize Jesus Christ’s crucifixion journey on Mount Calvary.  

The climb has three main destinations, which are “the Grotto,” “the Rockies,” and “The Summit.” “The Grotto” is the site for the Lady of Lourdes shrine and a popular vantage point for Mt. Situated in Nasugbu, Batangas, Mt. Batulao is one of the most accessible mountains near Manila and is another top hiking destination in the Philippines. Mountain climbing enthusiasts come to Mt. Batulao because of its many peaks, boulder formation, grass ridges, and scenic views. 

Mt. Batulao is one of the easiest Batangas mountains to trek, making it a perfect location for training climbs. 

The journey to the summit is composed of open trails and rolling slopes. The mountain summit is about 811 meters above sea level. Mt. Batulao has 12 peaks that offer panoramas of Taal Lake, Cavite, Nasugbu coastline, Maragondon mountains, Tagaytay highlands, Balayan Bay and Mt. Maculot. 

The mountain offers two main trails, called “Old Trail” and “New Trail''. The Old Trail is located in the mountain's eastern section and has 10 campsites/stations. The New Trail is on the west side of the mountain, and it features only one large campsite. 

The Evercrest Golf Course in Nasugbu is the jumpoff point to Mt. Batulao. From the golf course's entrance, you can walk or use the tricycle (local three-wheeler) to reach the start of the trails. Local guides, some of which are kids, would usually offer their services at the entrance.

Fortune Island lies just an hour off the coast of Nasugbu, Batangas. It features a white sandy beach, a cliff diving point, and clear turquoise water.  

The island’s history is quite interesting as it used to be the site of a luxurious resort. Unfortunately, the resort closed down because of the huge maintenance cost and the absence of freshwater sources. The Grecian Acropolis, which sits on top of a limestone cliff, is a reminder of Fortune Island's luxury resort days.

3. Taal Volcano 

Taal Volcano is the most recognizable landmark of Batangas. Standing at only 3 meters above sea level, it is one of the smallest volcanoes in the world. Aside from its size, Taal stands out because of its unique physical features.  

Inside the Taal Volcano’s caldera lies the beautiful Taal Lake, which surrounds more than 40 craters and cones. In the middle of this lake sits Volcano Island. At the center of Volcano Island is another lake referred to as the Main Crater Lake.

Taal Volcano has erupted many times throughout history. It remains to be one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines.

Aside from this, you will need a Philippine-issued identification card, health certificate, quick negative antigen test results 48 to 72 hours prior to departure, and a confirmed reservation is required for domestic tourists to enter Batangas.

However, while certain hotels in Batangas are permitted to operate at full capacity with the management’s discretion and in accordance with safety rules, the facilities are only authorized to reach their intended capacity. We strongly suggest advance booking. Ensure you get in touch with the hotel ahead of time.

They only permit guests 18 to 65 years of age in some rooms. You would need to contact the hotel directly to find out their particular needs.

How To Go To Lian Batangas

• To travel to Pasay or SM MOA, take a bus bound for Pasay or SM MOA.
• Travel to MRT-EDSA Taft Station via train or bus.
• In Pasay, take a bus to Calatagan, which is near MRT-EDSA Taft Station. Buses depart every day at 4:00 a.m. and depart at 4:30 p.m. If you like, you may travel to Calatagan, Batangas in a van. You can find the terminal in the underground parking lot of Metropoint Mall located on the other side of EDSA (chocolate chain or Kabayan Hotel landmark). You will pass by the Shogun Hotel on the other side of the street. The fare is about P180. The travel time is approximately three hours.

Welcome to Matabungkay, the lost idyllic paradise

“Welcome to Matabungkay!” a sign greets as you enter this barangay in Lian, Batangas, from Zobel Highway. And then you see the numerous plastic bags of garbage scattered on both sides of the road.

On my first visit here in 1998, this was an idyllic, small piece of paradise that inspired me into committing to make this place my retirement home. Tourists and residents alike could walk along the beach and neighborhood roads without fearing for their safety. For many years Matabungkay remained such a place, and so I bought a condominium there.

Then five or six years ago it began to change.

Squatters (land thieves—not informal settlers) began appearing in droves. Groups of men hang about along the roads at all hours, day and night. An entire community of them now lives on a land owned by the Department of Education.

And gangs of youngsters accost tourists on the beach, demanding money. The beach itself is now spoiled as people relieve themselves in the water, and trash is everywhere. Nobody feels safe walking around here anymore.

Stray dogs roam the place in packs, also at all hours, day and night, posing a threat to people, be they on foot, or on bicycles or motorbikes.

The chatter of karaoke “performances” can continually be heard 24 hours a day during vacation periods despite local ordinances limiting their operation—such that one hotel guest had to ask, “How can you allow people to come here for the weekend and hijack your village?” He and many like him have not been back.

Vehicles of all descriptions, without registration—and likely without insurance—freely ply the roads. I don’t mean just a few of them, but most of them. In fact, the barangay-based vehicles lack registration stickers.

Children as young as 10 years old could be seen operating motorbikes. And to think that one should be at least 17 years old to get a nonprofessional driver’s license.

By far the biggest assault on the law-abiding residents is the engine roar coming from motorcycles with no mufflers—even in the middle of the night.

Apparently, Republic Act No. 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code does not apply here. As a matter of fact, a barangay official here told me the law only applies on the highway and not inside the municipality.

Some time in the past, a new, terrifying development started to unfold. Residents were being robbed at gunpoint right inside their homes. This prompted concerned residents to seek audience with the mayor of Lian and the town’s police chief. During our meeting, we voiced all our concerns. They assured us that the appropriate measures have been taken to address those concerns.

The armed robberies have since abated, obviously because police patrols have become move visible. But RA 4136 is still felt nowhere here, even as our problems with the karaoke, stray dogs and squatters continue to pester law-abiding citizens.

The mayor says he would like to see more investments to bring Matabungkay Beach up to “tourism standard” to entice more visitors.

Good luck! While lawlessness prevails and unless peace and order is restored, the welcome sign at the entry road to Matabungkay means nothing.

Matabungkay Beach: Littered Memories in Batangas, Philippines

A worldful of grays are scattered along the shore of Matabungkay. It is strewn with ashen sand that sparkles a white glow when hugged by sunlight. It is bordered landward by a long, cramped lane of resorts and stores. Many times, it is littered with trash that unabashed locals and tourists left behind. And lying on the berm, almost safe from the swashes of the struggling tides, are memories — neither fresh nor stale — that I always come back for.

I always find myself lazing on the beach of Matabungkay. Sometimes with friends. Other times, just me. My last visit was almost a year ago, April 2012. There’s just a hole in my heart that only the sand of this place can fill.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

I grew up in Batangas, and I had always heard of its name since I was a kid. But my first time to set foot on this place was when I was already working here. It was famed for being a sanctuary, a place that lights up the spirit and boasts a lighter gray sand. Hidden along the western shore of the province, facing the West Philippine Sea, it was for the longest time an idyllic fishing village until tourism changed it completely.

Legend has it that Matabungkay was “rediscovered” in the early 1950s by Germans who were looking for a go-to paradise within proximity to the bustling Manila. Slowly it gained prominence and for a long period became the “it” destination in Southern Luzon, way before the rebirth of Anawangin or the rise of Caramoan.

Today, Matabungkay is not as famous, but it continues to offer refuge to work-battered capital-dwellers aching for a respite and families wanting an easy getaway. One thing that’s going for it is its accessibility — only two hours away.

In our town, going to Matabungkay, despite its being just over an hour away, was a dream. I remember, when I was a kid my mom would always tell my siblings and I how expensive it was to go on a vacation there whenever we brought it up. Of course, things are different now. For starters, we can already afford to stay there. Plus, a lot of cheaper resorts and inns have mushroomed along the shore through the years. Its proximity coupled with affordability had brought in a lot of tourists, providing livelihood to the locals and changing the face of the place along the way.

Those who are looking for a quiet, secluded paradise will be disappointed by the commercialism that had taken over it. Stores are everywhere and vendors of souvenirs approach guests, sometimes persistently. These floating huts have become almost a fixture that it’s almost impossible to take a shot without them in the frame.

But those patient to find a good spot are rewarded. For example, Matabungkay Beach Hotel’s beachfront is bookmarked by runways that extend to the sea, drawing a border between the pricey resort and the rest of the beach.

At night, your elusive peace of mind might be chased away by the ubiquitous showstopping videoke/karaoke performances, good and bad, that play in the background.

In the many times that I returned to Matabungkay, one thing that is constant is the trash. Each time, I spotted food leftovers, plastic wrappers, disposable plates and cups, glass bottles, and cigarette butts. I know that you find these in many other beaches in and out of the country but they’re glaring here — because of both the size and the number. It was actually Matabungkay that inspired me and my teammates at PhilippineBeaches.org to launch a Responsible Travel campaign.

The last time I was here, the condition was a lot better, but it definitely has seen better days. Still, it’s a good sign. At least I know that the environmental fee that they have started collecting is going somewhere. Again, it’s been a year since my last visit and I can’t speak about its current state. I hope it’s better now.

The Memories

My very first serious job sent me and had me stay in Matabungkay in Lian, Batangas for two months. I had just graduated from college, and it was my debut to the corporate world. Part of my job was to manage a group of Korean students studying English at Matabungkay Beach Resort. Those two months were filled with unforgettable experiences with the kids and my co-workers. Although the hectic schedule did not allow me to get out of the resort often, it did not stop me from creating fun memories here. That was in early 2007.

I had never seen many of those Korean and Filipino kids and colleagues again since then. Even despite exchanging emails, there is still something missing, something that may be the music of voices or the warmth of physical presence. Looking back, I can’t believe just how close I was to them and appalled by how distant we now are. It’s like our friendship only existed during the two months that they were near, that they were here. Six years later, when contacts have been lost and links severed, there is only one place to relive those days — on the beach of Matabu ngkay, among the trash and the crowd and the ashen sand that once was scarred by our footprints.

How to get to Matabungkay : If driving, from SLEX, take Sta Rosa Exit, Silang-Tagaytay Highway, and continue until you reach the Batangas-Cavite border. Turn right onto the road under the Nasugbu arc until you reach Shell gas station, turn left towards the direction of Lian and Calatagan. Watch out for a Matabungkay signage on your right hand side. If taking public transportation, take a van (shuttle) or bus going to Calatagan or Lian at EDSA-Taft (near Pasay Rotonda and Metropoint Mall). Simply tell the driver/conductor to drop you off at the junction to Matabungkay. From there, take a tricycle.

It makes me kind of mad to see trash on a beautiful beach. parang kasing natatakot ka ng maligo sa tubig. I hope the local gov’t will raise awareness on this :)

This beach was part of my childhood, we went there like it was the only beach in the country. Even as a child I always remembered it being dirty, those floating cottages unappealing, snorkeling sucks, people just casually dump their mess everywhere, and instead of watching out for dorsal fins sticking out of the water, the Jaws theme starts to warn you for floating human feces slowly bobbing and drifting towards your face–it ruins summer break for me and I kept asking myself why my parents always take us here, either they’re too cheap or they simply don’t love us. I’m now 40 and have been lucky enough to travel to the most beautiful beaches our country has to offer, took my parents to a few of them, and each time I tell myself “Now THIS is a beach!” thinking back at this pathetic place. I can’t believe the local government hasn’t lifted a finger to make it a competitive tourist destination. Not sharing this on my FB. I don’t want any of my European friends to “re-rediscover” this lousy beach. This place is for the locals who love tossing their “gifts” into the wide open seas. Even if you’re just driving from Manila you deserve much better, this will give you more stress, there are better alternatives–try Laiya. No one deserves to swim along side half-digested corn.

It has been many years since this travel blog has been created. Just this weekend, I had brought my family there and I know already that the beach itself is a nice beach to stop by and spend a nice weekend getaway. Anyway wala na rin kasi kaming mapagpiliaan dahil ang mga beach resorts somewhere na malapit sa amin sa Cavite which is sa Nasugbu at that week are all fully booked. Baka na rin dahil sa pag ease out ng quarantine protocol at excited na rin ang lahat ng mga taong lumabas at makatikim muli ng vitamin sea. Yeah, what really gives the bad expression of the place are still the same, the trashes/garbage. Name it meron kang makikita within the shoreline, to add are the facemask and the faceshields which we know dahil sa pandemic. The Brgy. volunteers papasok pa lang ay haharangin ka na para sa tinatawag nilang environmental fee, the cost is 25 pesos na I believed is not worth it. Why did I say that, man, ang dating basura sa dagat. Sa shoreline at wala naman akong nakita on our two days stay there na mga environmental warriors ng brgy. of whom the 25 pesos should be used per head of tourist that is arriving. I believed hindi bababa sa 1K per day ang visitors arrival nila. To simply equate that, eh 25k per day ang pasok sa income ng brgy. multiply that by number of days in a month lets say 28 days and that will give us 700K in a month. That 700k is enough para passhurin mo ang mga local volunteer warriors for at least 20 persons na may min. wage lets say na 500 a day to 280K. The rest can be shouldered by the brgy. for other income generating projects they can create out of tourism. Ang ikauunlad at ikagaganda pa ng matabungkay ay nakasalalay sa mga turistang gaya ko na mag kakalat ng good impression para sa mga future visitors or tourist sa lugar. For now I can say, masyado na syang commercialise to the point na ito dapat ang sinasabi ni Duterte na cesspool. Tsk.tsk.tsk.

GERI sets aside P5 billion for new Batangas resort

M ANILA, Philippines — Global-Estate Resorts Inc. (GERI), a subsidiary of property giant Megaworld, is investing an initial P5 billion to develop a 150-hectare beachside property in Lian, Batangas.

GERI is allocating the amount for the development of Lialto Beach and Golf Estates in the next 10 years.

Lialto Beach and Golf Estates, which is approximately 2.5 hours away from Metro Manila and about 45 minutes away from Tagaytay, will be the 32nd township development of the Megaworld Group.

It will feature a residential village, an 18-hole golf course, a beach clubhouse featuring a 20-meter-tall lighthouse, landscaped gardens and a nearly one-kilometer coastline that includes a beach area.

For its residential village offering, it will consist of prime lots with sizes ranging from 300 square meters up to 1,200 sqm, including those along the fairways and on elevated areas.

As a sustainable community, Lialto Beach and Golf Estates will be lined up with solar-powered streetlights, as well as adopt a mangrove area along the beach to become the community’s protected marine sanctuary.

“We designed this development for people who want to be surrounded by the beautiful vistas of the beach and the sea, while also enjoying an unparalleled golf lifestyle,” Megaworld Global-Estate Inc. vice president of sales and marketing Javier Romeo Abustan said.

“Whether you dream of raising your family in a healthy and sustainable environment, retiring and enjoying an active and engaging community, or simply investing in a place where you can grow and enjoy your future, this development promises to be a very special place for years to come,” he said.

Abustan said Lialto came from the words “Lian” which is the municipality where the development is located and “Alto” which means high altitude or height.

“(It’s) a vivid description of how this development stands on an elevated area in this side of Batangas,” he said.

GERI is a developer of master-planned integrated tourism estates.

Its other integrated lifestyle communities include Eastland Heights in Antipolo, Rizal; Twin Lakes in Laurel, Batangas; Boracay Newcoast in Boracay Island; The Hamptons Caliraya in Lumban-Cavinti, Laguna; Sta. Barbara Heights in Iloilo and Arden Botanical Estate in Trece Martires-Tanza, Cavite.
