2023 Legends Tour: Bigger Prize Funds with New Venues in Scotland and Ireland

Golf in uae, golf in uae world.

At least 18 tournaments with a record-breaking prize fund

Sport - Golf - James Kingston

The Legends Tour will continue to build on its star quality with a global 2023 schedule which features exciting debuts for two stunning links venues, in Scotland and in Ireland, and increased prize funds across the board for many of the game’s most decorated players.

The 2023 season will feature at least 18 tournaments with a record-breaking prize fund – with final numbers set to be released shortly - which will be a significant increase on the 2022 campaign.

Among the exciting developments for 2023 is the news that the spectacular Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen will host the Tour for the first time when the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is played from August 25-27.

The Scottish venue is joined on the schedule by another breath-taking links newcomer, with Seapoint Golf Links - a rising star in the ranks of Irish links courses and located on the East coast, just an hour north of Dublin - set to host a major international professional event for the first time from June 22-24.

The JCB Championship will return from August 4-6 after a glorious debut in 2022, when a host of superstars including Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Darren Clarke and Paul Lawrie descended upon the spectacular Uttoxer venue, with Germany’s Alex Cejka finishing two shots clear of Irish star Paul McGinley to lift the title.

Among the other returning highlights on the new-look schedule are July’s Swiss Seniors Open at Golf Club Bad Ragaz, the WINSTONgolf Senior Open in Germany in September, the Italian Senior Open in October and November’s Farmfoods European Senior Masters in Spain.

A new English event, the Legends Players Championship, will be held for the first time in 2023, joining the JCB Championship and the Jersey Legends in a triumvirate of confirmed England-based tournaments.

Major glory may be on the cards for the biggest stars of the Legends Tour, with the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex visiting Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in 2023, while the KitchenAid US PGA Senior Championship will be played at PGA Frisco, Texas and the US Senior Open will take place at Wisconsin’s SentryWorld Golf Course.

The Tour will once again close with the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius, which has provided a fitting finale to the popular competition for more than a decade. At the 2022 edition of the event, staged earlier in December, South African James Kingston lifted the John Jacobs Trophy as the Order of Merit leader despite an impressive display by tournament winner Thomas Bjørn.

Many golfers hoping to make their mark on the Legends Tour in 2023 will have to first prove themselves at the Tour’s Qualifying School this month, which returns for the first time in three years. The venue for the high-stakes event will be Gloria Golf Resort in Belek, Turkey, where players will battle it out to earn one of five spots on the Tour.

2023 LEGENDS TOUR: BIGGER PRIZE FUNDS WITH NEW VENUES IN SCOTLAND AND IRELAND

Phil Harrison, Legends Tour CEO, said: “Since rebranding as the Legends Tour in 2020, our central ambition has been to keep growing, and this 2023 schedule is another incredibly exciting step forward in the evolution of our Tour.

“We have some stunning new venues to add to the long list of world-class golf courses which we visit on an annual basis. We are thrilled that, for the first time, our players will compete on two spectacular links venues in Trump International and Seapoint, while the addition of the English Masters means another big event for the famously passionate British golf fans.

“We extend our thanks to all of our host venues, sponsors and partners for being part of this journey and we look forward to welcoming them back in 2023 for what is set to be an exhilarating season for our players, our celebrities and our fans.”

The Legends Tour is the brainchild of entrepreneur Ryan Howsam, who bought a majority stake in the then-named European Senior Tour and set about rebranding the Tour in 2020. A prestigious competition featuring some of golf’s finest players aged 50 and over, the reimagined Legends Tour became a fan favourite and promises to be better than ever in 2023.

There was no rest for the weary as most of the top players on the PGA Tour were back in action for the third consecutive week, this time at the Travelers Championship, a signature event at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

So, a signature event must mean a Scottie Scheffler victory, right? Well, yes. The World No. 1 captured his sixth win of the year and fourth at a signature event—Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Memorial Tournament and now the Travelers. Those to go with the Masters and the Players.

Scheffler shot 65-64-64-65 for a 22-under-par total. Tom Kim made birdie on the last hole to shoot a final-round 66 and sneak into a playoff with Scheffler. But on the first playoff hole Kim dumped his approach into a greenside bunker and was not able to get up and down, leaving Scheffler with a simple two-putt par for win No. 6.

For the victory, Scheffler took home $3.6 million from the overall $20 million purse.

It's the first time that anyone has won six times on the PGA Tour before July since Arnold Palmer accomplished the feat in 1962.

Legends Tour hits new landmark with biggest schedule and record €18million prizepool

The legends tour has unveiled plans for a record-breaking 2024 season, headlined by its busiest schedule to date – including nine new events – and an eye-watering €18million prize pool..

Running from April to December, this year’s globetrotting schedule will feature 20 events – featuring new tournaments set to debut in Barbados, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, the UK and Zambia, with even more additions still to be announced.

They join Legends Tour staples such as the flagship Staysure PGA Seniors Championship – which will return to Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen following the success of last year’s event – and the Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links.

Many of the Legends Tour’s brightest stars will be eyeing up Major victory in 2024 at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores Golf Club, the US Senior Open at Newport Country Club and The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Carnoustie Golf Links.

The season will culminate with the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius at Constance Belle Mare Plage, where qualifying players will contest for the John Jacobs Trophy, which was won in 2023 by former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker.

As well as the tournament silverware, some of golf’s biggest names will also be competing for the largest prize pool in Legends Tour history. The €18million (more than €8.6million of which will be assigned outside of the Majors of senior men’s golf – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open presented by Rolex) represents a 100 per cent increase since the tour returned to a full schedule in 2022 following the covid pandemic, with $2million to play for in the final two events on the Road to Mauritius and a bonus pool of $100,000 for the top five players in the final standings.

Complementing the drama of the professional events will be the unique Celebrity Pro-Am, which sees stars from the world of sport and entertainment competing to raise money and awareness for their chosen charities. Meanwhile, passionate amateurs can tee off alongside their heroes in the Legends Experience, the tour’s one-of-a-kind pro-am experience.

The announcement suggests the global growth of the Legends Tour – which hit new heights in 2023 – is set to continue. At the end of the season, the brand announced record figures for amateur participation, spectators and social media engagement, with the latter taking total reach across all channels to over 100million people for the first time.

In November, the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam – the competition’s first foray into Vietnam – embodied the expansion into new markets, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, that has characterised the Legends Tour’s first three years.

Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and 2024 promises to be another incredible year for the Legends Tour.

“Securing new events in some truly spectacular venues around the world is always a key objective of ours, and we are thrilled with the additions to the schedule for this season, as well as the prestigious venues we are honoured to return to.

“Everything – from the standard of competition to the number of amateurs getting involved – has been growing year on year, and this year will be no exception. We cannot wait to see it all unfold.”

Scottie Scheffler 7th on all-time PGA Tour earnings list

Scottie Scheffler  earned his 11th PGA Tour win Sunday at the 2024 Memorial Tournament . In a quirk of scheduling, it’s his first victory after the month of April.

Regardless, a win is a win is a win, and Scheffler now has five this year, the first to win five in a season since Justin Thomas seven years ago.

What’s more, it’s yet another signature event victory, which means elevated first-place cash. This Memorial win was good for $4 million and brings his career on-course earnings on the PGA Tour to $66,589,782.

His win in April at the Masters moved him into  10th all-time . This latest victory has leapfrogged him past Justin Rose and Adam Scott into the No. 7 slot.

His 11 wins include two Masters, two Players (the richest event on the PGA Tour), two Arnold Palmer Invitationals, two WM Phoenix Opens (one of which was a signature event) as well as a Match Play, an RBC Heritage and now a Memorial.

He is a Tiger Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational shy of winning all three of the player-hosted events.

Scottie Scheffler’s 11 PGA Tour wins

  • 2022 WM Phoenix Open:  $1,476,000
  • 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational:  $2,160,000
  • 2022 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play:  $2,100,000
  • 2022 Masters:  $2,700,000
  • 2023 WM Phoenix Open:  $3,600,000
  • 2023 Players Championship:  $4,500,000
  • 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational:  $4,000,000
  • 2024 Players Championship:  $4,500,000
  • 2024 Masters:  $3,600,000
  • 2024 RBC Heritage:  $3,600,000
  • 2024 Memorial Tournament.

Scheffler is one of 16 players in the history of the PGA Tour to reach the $50 million plateau in on-course earnings.

Runner-up Collin Morikawa and Ben An became the ninth and 10 th  players this season to cross $5 million in earnings.

Here’s a closer look at how much each player who made the cut in the 73-man field earned from a purse of $20 million.

After a chaotic protest on 18th green, Scottie Scheffler wins Travelers

  • Follow on Twitter

First, a back-and-forth.

Then, chaos.

But in the end, Scottie Scheffler . Again. Things returned to normal.

It’d been a scene, though, on the 18th hole at TPC River Highlands, after Scheffer had worked his way into a one-shot advantage during Sunday’s Travelers Championship final round. On the closing hole, Scheffler hit just off the green’s right side with his second shot, before Tom Kim , his closest pursuer, dropped to 10 feet. But then play stopped. A small group of protesters stormed the green.

They released a power-looking substance. They were stopped and led off by security. Watching were Scheffler, Kim and playing partner Akshay Bhatia , who later said he was scared for his life. Play was paused. The grounds crew cleaned up debris, though some stains remained. They played on.

And Scheffler missed. And Kim made. Playoff.

There, back on 18 — where a new hole was dug after the interruption — Scheffler shined, as he has all year long. He hit his second shot to 12 feet, while Kim dumped his into a greenside bunker, and on a par, the win was Scheffler’s. It’s his sixth victory before July 1, a feat not accomplished since Arnold Palmer last did so in 1962. In March, Scheffler won the Arnold Palmer and the Players . In April, Scheffler won the Masters and the RBC Heritage . This month, he won the Memorial . There was an incident at last month’s PGA Championship , and a blip at last week’s U.S. Open . But now he’s a winner again, following a five-under 65 in regulation play and a 22-under total he shared with Kim.

One by one by one, quite a few in all, his foes fell short.

Sungjae Im ? Nope. A bogey on 10 did him in. Patrick Cantlay ? He bogeyed 16. Bhatia? He bogeyed 1, 9 and 16. Xander Schauffele ? He shot just even-par. Cameron Young ? He was wayward with his tee shot on 12 and he double-bogeyed. Tony Finau ? He was wayward with his tee shot on 16 and double-bogeyed. Tom Hoge? He blitzed TPC River Highlands for a 62, but he had started the final round too far back.

Meanwhile, one by one by one, quite a few in all, Scheffler’s drives fell in the fairway.

And his irons fell next to flags.

And his golf balls fell into golf holes.

To be fair, things were close, and Kim, the third-round leader, showed game in shooting a 66, but Scheffler was relentless. He birdied the par-5 6th after hitting his third shot to 6 feet. He birdied the par-4 7th on a 15-foot putt. He birdied the par-5 13th after hitting his second shot to 11 feet. He birdied the par-4 14th after hitting his second shot to 3 feet, and that put him in at least a share of the lead the rest of the way. He also birdied the par-4 15th.

On the par-4 18th, things tightened. Things became frightening.

But in the end, Scottie Scheffler.

Again.

Things returned to normal.

The takeaway

What’s next? Seven wins? Ten? A dozen? The Open Championship? All are in play for Scheffler.

The leaderboard breakdown

— Tom Kim starts the final round with a one-shot lead over Akshay Bhatia and Scottie Scheffler, a two-stroke lead over Xander Schauffele and Sungjae Im, and a three-shot lead over Collin Morikawa. Kim is at 18-under, Bhatia and Scheffler are at 17-under, Schauffele and Im are at 16-under, and Morikawa is at 15-under.

— Schauffele birdies the 578-yard, par-5 6th after getting home in two, and he moves into a share of the lead. Schauffele and Kim are at 18-under, Im, Bhatia, Scheffler and Cameron Young are at 17-under, and Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau and Shane Lowry are at 16-under.

— In about a minute span, the birdies fly. Young, after a birdie on the 368-yard, par-4 9th, and Scheffler, after a birdie on the 6th, briefly move into a share of the lead, before Kim also birdies the 6th to reclaim it alone. The leaderboard now reads this way: Kim is at 19-under, Scheffler, Schauffele, Young and Bhatia are at 18-under, and Cantlay, Finau and Im are at 17-under.

— The 202-yard, par-3 8th is dramatic for the final group. Scheffler birdies on a 15-footer. Bhatia birdies on a 26-footer. Kim then three-putts from 3 feet, and he falls out of the lead. Bhatia and Scheffler are at 19-under, Young and Kim are at 18-under, and Cantlay, Finau, Schauffele and Im are at 17-under.

— Young double-bogeys the 398-yard, par-4 12th after hitting his tee shot out of bounds, and he falls. The leaderboard reads this way: Bhatia and Scheffler are at 19-under, Finau and Kim are at 18-under, and Cantlay and Im are at 17-under.

— Bhatia bogeys the 368-yard, par-4 9th after missing the green with his second shot, and he falls out of the lead. Scheffler now stands alone. The leaderboard reads this way: Scheffler is at 19-under, Finau, Kim and Bhatia are at 18-under, and Cantlay, Im and Tom Hoge are at 17-under.

— Finau birdies the 12th on a 23-footer, and he jumps into a share of the lead. Finau and Scheffler are at 19-under, Kim and Bhatia are at 18-under, and Hoge and Cantlay are at 17-under.

— Kim, on a 9-footer, and Bhatia, on a 2-footer, birdie the 450-yard, par-4 10th, and there are now four players in the lead. Finau, Kim, Bhatia and Scheffler are at 19-under, Cantlay is at 18-under, and Hoge and Brian Harman are at 17-under.

— Cantlay birdies the 405-yard, par-4 14th after hitting his second shot to 4 feet, and he jumps into a share of the lead. Cantlay, Finau, Kim, Bhatia and Scheffler are at 19-under, Hoge is at 18-under, and Harman is at 17-under.

— Finau birdies the 293-yard, par-4 15th to take the solo lead — then hits his tee shot into the water on the 158-yard, par-3 16th. A couple minutes later, Scheffler and Kim birdie the 531-yard, par-5 13th, and the leaderboard reads this way: Finau, Kim and Scheffler are at 20-under, Hoge and Bhatia are at 19-under, and Cantlay is at 18-under.

— Hoge birdies the 440-yard, par-4 18th after hitting his second shot to 4 feet, and he moves into a share of the lead. Hoge, Finau, Kim and Scheffler are at 20-under, Bhatia is at 19-under, and Cantlay is at 18-under.

— Finau double-bogeys the 16th. The leaderboard reads like this: Scheffler, Kim and Hoge are at 20-under, Bhatia is at 19-under, and Cantlay, Finau and Im are at 18-under.

— Scheffler birdies the 14th after hitting his second shot to 3 feet, and he leads by one. Scheffler is at 21-under, Kim and Hoge are at 20-under, and Bhatia is at 19-under.

— Scheffler and Kim birdie the 15th, and the leaderboard stays the same. It reads like this: Scheffler is at 22-under, Kim is at 21-under, and Hoge is at 20-under.

NEARLY JARS IT! Trailing by one, Tom Kim will have 10 feet for birdie at the last. pic.twitter.com/RJWO0Qd7uS — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 23, 2024

— On 18, Scheffler comes up just short of the green with his second shot, while Kim, after a club twirl, drops an iron to 10 feet. Then things get chaotic. First, a group of protesters storm the green, leaving debris. Then, Scheffler comes up just short on a 26-footer for birdie. Then Kim drops the putt for birdie. They will go to a playoff, starting on the 18th hole, which will have a new hole location after the disruption.

— On the first hole of the playoff, Scheffler hits to 12 feet on his second shot, and Kim hits into the greenside bunker. Scheffler pars, and he wins.

The final word

“It’s pretty special. It’s been a great season. I’ve been fortunate to come away with some wins, and it’s been a lot of fun. Tom played his heart out today. He’s a great player, great champion. It was fun battling him today.” — Scottie Scheffler on CBS

KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Purse Increases to $10.4 Million

KPMG Signage

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — KPMG, the PGA of America and the LPGA announced today that this year's KPMG Women’s PGA Championship purse has increased to $10.4 million, a $400,000 increase from 2023. The bump raises total prize money for the 2024 season to $125 million, a record-breaking amount on the LPGA Tour.

The winner of this week’s major championship will take home a $1.56 million first-place check, making the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship the sixth LPGA Tour event to feature a winner’s share of more than $1 million. It is also the third highest first-place prize on the 2024 schedule.

KPMG and the PGA of America first partnered with the LPGA in 2015 and have been committed to raising the bar in women’s golf and women’s sports ever since. The purse has increased by 360 percent since the three organizations began working together on the championship, going from $2.25 million to $10.4 million, with an additional 360 percent increase in the winner’s share.

Today’s announcement also raises the total prize money for the LPGA’s five major championships to $48 million, an increase of over 100 percent.

LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan knows that having partners who are continually dedicated to elevating women’s sports is critical for the long-term success of both the organization and female athletics as a whole.

“I don't think you can talk about the growth of the LPGA over the last decade without saying the words KPMG,” said Marcoux Samaan. “I think bringing the PGA of America, KPMG, and LPGA together, we've created something that has been a catalyst. Going from $2.25 million to $10.4 million this year, 360% growth, it's not just about the money.

“It's that the world is showing the value they place and that KPMG and the PGA of America places on the talent that we have out here. These are the best women in the world, and they should be paid commensurate with that talent. What we've done has truly instigated and been a catalyst to others moving there.”

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is the third major championship of the 2024 LPGA Tour season and gets underway on Thursday, June 20 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
