At a distance of 2 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station, Observatory Hill is a hill top located near Chowrasta Square in the dreamy hill town of Darjeeling. It is one of the great places to visit in Darjeeling and among the popular viewpoints in Darjeeling. The hill is encircled at the bottom of the Mall Road. The Observatory Hill is one of the oldest sites of attraction in Darjeeling and also has historical and religious significance. Built in 1765 CE by Lama Dorje-Rinzing, the Bhutia Busty Monastery, the oldest monastery in Darjeeling, was first located on Observatory Hill. The monastery was sacked by a Gorkha invasion in 1815 and it was rebuilt and shifted to its present location at Bhutia Busty in 1879. At a distance of 1 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station, Lloyd's Botanical Garden or Darjeeling Botanical Garden is a beautiful garden located in the beautiful hill town of Darjeeling. The garden is among the oldest botanical gardens in Darjeeling and also one of the popular tourist places in Darjeeling. Established in 1878 CE, the garden was named after William Lloyd, who provided the required land for it. The garden was built in reference to the Calcutta Botanical Garden. 2 Old Ghoom Monastery / Yiga Choeling Monastery

At a distance of 1 km from Ghoom Railway Station and 6 km from Darjeeling, Old Ghoom Monastery, also known as Yiga Choeling Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery situated at Ghoom near the beautiful hill town of Darjeeling. It is one of the oldest and most popular Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region of Darjeeling and also one of the must visit places in Darjeeling. Yiga Choeling Monastery was established in 1850 CE by the Mongolian astrologer and monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, who was the head of the monastery until 1905 CE. The Monastery belongs to Gelugpa or the Yellow Hat sect. This is the first ever Tibetan Buddhist monastery to be built in the Darjeeling region. During the Chinese occupation of 1959 in Tibet many high ranking monks fled to India and took refuge in this monastery. 3 Batasia Loop

At a distance of 4 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Batasia Loop is a railway loop in Darjeeling of West Bengal. Situated below the Ghoom station, it is one of the mesmerizing places to visit in Darjeeling. Batasia Loop was built in 1919 as an engineering requirement to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. At this point, the track spirals around over itself through a tunnel and over a hilltop. After Ghoom (the highest railway station), there is a sharp fall as the toy train moves towards Darjeeling. There was no way a narrow gauge toy train could navigate the drastic fall of about 100 feet to the gradient of the slope. So, a large circular area was built for the loop to make the slope gentle. 5 Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway

At a distance of 4 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway is a passenger ropeway located in Darjeeling town of West Bengal. Also known as Darjeeling Ropeway, it is one of Asia's longest Passenger Ropeways and also the first Passenger Ropeway in India. Darjeeling Ropeway was started in 1968 by the Forest Development Corporation of West Bengal. It was initially set up to cater to the tea gardens at the valleys below which did not otherwise have an easy access. Starting with just one cable car, now it was upgraded to 16 cable cars each having a capacity of six persons. 6 Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre

At a distance of 5 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station, Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre is a rehabilitation center for the Tibetan refugees in the beautiful hill town of Darjeeling, West Bengal. It is one of the prominent landmarks of Darjeeling and also one of the best places to visit in Darjeeling. The center was setup by Tibetan refugees on 2nd October 1959 AD. It serves as a residence of several Tibetan refugees who fled from their homeland following the footsteps of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. At a distance of 2.5 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Darjeeling Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist stupa situated on the slopes of the Jalapahar hill in Darjeeling. It is one of more than 70 pagodas built around the world by the Japanese Buddhist Nipponzan Myohoji organization and among the most popular attractions in Darjeeling. The foundation stone of the pagoda was laid in 1972 by Nichidatsu Fuji, a Buddhist monk from Japan and founder of the Nipponzan-Myohoji Buddhist Order. Inaugurated in 1992, the pagoda was designed by M. Ohka. Being the tallest structure in Darjeeling with a height of 28.5 meters, it is open to people of all faith and is purposely made to propagate peace and prosperity in the world. At a distance of 2.5 km from Darjeeling Railway Station, Dali Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located in Dali area of Darjeeling. Also known as Druk Sangag Choling Monastery, it is one of the biggest monasteries in West Bengal and also among the famous places to visit in Darjeeling. Dali Monastery is one of the most prominent monasteries of the Kargyupa sect, built by Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche in 1971. The gompa was inaugurated by His Holiness Dalai Lama in 1993, where he gave 3 days of religious teachings. Darjeeling Tour Package Overview

Visit this beautiful and stunning hill-station, set in the foothills of the Himalayas in West Bengal with your friends and family. In its history, Darjeeling was much more than a tea plantation. Then it was a summer resort for the British Elites during the Raj era and has many attractions.  The weather of Darjeeling is cool and hazy which is quite enjoyable.  On the first day of this package, you will reach the airport and check into your hotel. After checking in you will relax yourself for the first day of the trip. On the second day you will head towards Tiger Hills and witness beautiful sights of sunrise. Then you will Visit Ghoom Monastery  which is famous for its tall statue of Maitreya Buddha. After that you will head towards a spiral railway surrounded by Beautifully. You will also visit  Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. And then you will be back to the hotel for a night stay. The next morning will be the last day of the trip and you will check out from the hotel. You can visit the local market and then head toward your airport or railway station for the departure.

• After the amazing morning, rush back to hotel and have your Breakfast to get energy for the rest of the day
• After having Breakfast, you will head towards Himalayan Mountaineering Institute which is famous institute to impart skills to all those who wish to pursue career in climbing activities
• After that visit highest altitude of Zoological Park to watch different varieties of species, animals and birds
• After this you will visit beautiful Tenzing Rock and famous Tea Gardens
• Other places to visit next are Ropeway and Japanese Temple
• After a whole day of Sightseeing , head back to the hotel. And enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3 - Departure fr Darjeeling via Midil Tour

Day 1 : Arrival in Darjeeling

Meet our representative at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) or Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand (Junction) or Bagdogra Airport (XIB). With his assistance, you can reach to Darjeeling and check-in the pre-booked hotel. The day is at leisure.

Stay overnight at Darjeeling.

Day 2 : Darjeeling Sightseeing

This day we will go for Darjeeling sightseeing. In the morning we will visit Tiger Hills at the time of sunrise to enjoy the scenic view of Kanchenjunga, Mt. Everest and several other famous peaks of Eastern Himalaya .

After a short break, we will have a ride on Toy Train of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) which is famous as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Toy train tickets are not included in the main package.

Next, we will visit the Mountaineering Institute , founded by Tenzing Norgay, the renowned Everest conquerer. The equipment used in the climb is arranged here for a display.

Thereafter we will go to the Tibet Handicraft Centre and spend some time in the midst of wonderful tea gardens . Our next destination is Ghoom Monastery . The calm ambience of this place becomes more mystic with dense fog.

We will also take you to Yoga-Chiling 'Yellow Hat' temple . Here you can experience a foghorn-like sound coming from the giant Gyeling pipes blown by the Buddhist monks making the village more interesting.

Then we will have a visit to Chholing and Darli , two popular Buddhist monasteries. Makal-babu-ko-thaan, an Observatory Hill is our place to visit in the evening . It is a popular belief that a red hat Buddhist Monastery called as Dorje Ling or 'Place of the Thunderbolt' was in this place once upon a time. It was destroyed by the Nepalese in the 19th century and now both the Shivas and Buddhist share the present temples.

Return to the hotel and overnight stay at Darjeeling.

Day 3 : Darjeeling - Mirik - Darjeeling

In the morning we will have a trip to Tiger Hills to enjoy the amazeballs sunrise and on our way back visit to Ghoom Monastery where there is a statue of Maitry (Coming Buddha).

Upon having breakfast, we will go to the local market and post-lunch you will start your journey towards Mirik . The name Mirik is actually derived from Mir-Yok which means 'Place burnt by fire'. Enjoy the magnificent beauty of the serene hills from Mirik.

Spend some quality time beside Sumendu lake and enjoy the mesmerising natural beauty along with fun activities including horse ride, boating and canoeing .

Later Visit the Indo-Nepal border while returning. Overnight stay at Darjeeling.

Day 4 : Darjeeling (Departure)

After breakfast, our assistant will transfer you to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) or Bagdogra Airport (IXB).

French President Emmanuel Macron: "Let us be worthy of those who landed here"

French President Emmanuel Macron closed the international ceremony marking 80 years since D-Day with a speech honoring the soldiers who fought in the largest seaborne invasion in human history and, as other leaders have done throughout the day, drawing parallels to the current geopolitical unrest — most notably the war in Ukraine.

Perhaps the strongest part of Macron's speech was its end, in which he honored Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — who was in attendance — and the Ukrainian people's fight against Russia.

"Faced with the return of war to our continent, faced with the questioning of everything they fought for, faced with those who claim to change borders by force or rewrite history, let us be worthy of those who landed here. Your presence here today, Mr. President of Ukraine, says it all,” Macron said, followed by a brief interruption of the roar of a fighter jet flyover.

Europe has not seen the type of ground conflict that is raging in Ukraine since the end of World War II, and this year’s anniversary comes as Russian forces advance on the battlefield – handing Kyiv a series of tactical defeats and poking holes in the already fragile Western alliance opposed to the Kremlin’s war.

"We know that liberty is a fight for every morning," Macron added. "For everyone in this world that lives hoping for liberty, for equality, for fraternity the sixth of June is a day without end, a never-ending dawn."

World War II veteran dies while traveling to France for D-Day anniversary

Robert Persichitti, a 102-year-old World War II US Navy veteran, died last week while on his way to France to commemorate  the 80th anniversary of D-Day , according to Honor Flight Rochester, a veterans organization.

Persichitti was a “wonderful, pleasant, humble guy,” who was “easy to talk to,” said Honor Flight Rochester President and CEO Richard Stewart, who told CNN he learned of his friend’s death last Friday.

“We miss him,” said Stewart.

While Persichitti passed away bound for Normandy — where the Allied forces’  landing on June 6, 1944 , laid the foundation for the defeat of Nazi Germany — he served in the Pacific as a radioman aboard the USS Eldorado, Stewart said. His tour of duty included Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam, according to Stewart and  the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame , into which Persichitti was inducted in 2020.

Persichitti fell ill last week during a stop in Germany while headed for Normandy, Al DeCarlo, a friend who was traveling with Persichitti, told  CNN affiliate WHAM . Persichitti was airlifted to the hospital and died soon after, DeCarlo said.

“The doctor was with him. He was not alone, he was at peace and he was comfortable,” DeCarlo said. “She put his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra, on her phone and he peacefully left us.”

Persichitti had heart problems in the past, “but for 102, I would say he was in superb health,” Stewart told CNN.

Persichitti was born in a coal mining town outside Pittsburgh, Stewart said, describing his friend's “humble, poor beginnings.” After the war, Persichitti worked as a carpentry teacher in Rochester, New York, according to the Veterans Hall of Fame, and in 1972 received a degree from SUNY Buffalo.

Trump posts tribute on 80th anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy

Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday posted a tribute to the “immortal heroes who landed at Normandy” to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. 

“Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth. They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

France's Macron awards 3 more people the Legion of Honor

French President Emmanuel Macron used the international ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day to award the Legion of Honor, France's highest military or civilian distinction, to three more American veterans: Joseph Miller, Richard Calvin Rung and Arlester Brown.

Earlier in the day, Macron awarded the Legion of Honor to Christian Lamb , a 104-year-old British woman credited with having made the maps for the D-Day landing, and 11 other American veterans.

Testimonials and musical performances are taking place during international ceremony

As the international ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Omaha Beach is underway, testimonials from those who fought in the war are currently being read out.

Along with the testimonials, musical performances are demonstrated in front of attendees.

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deliver an address later during the ceremony.

Austin says "Ukraine matters" in the midst of D-Day ceremonies

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed Russia's war in Ukraine while participating in D-Day ceremonies, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer that "Ukraine matters."

"I have engaged members of Congress on both sides, in both parties. I have seen throughout strong support for Ukraine, and even though it took a while to get the legislation through, I was confident that that the right thing was going to happen."

He continued, "Because anytime you see that type of support on both sides of the aisle for a cause, Congress will find a way to get things done, which is what they did in this case, because it's the right thing to do."

The international ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Omaha Beach has begun.

More than 20 heads of state and government and representatives from royal families across Europe are in attendance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at Thursday's international ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day to a standing ovation and a rousing applause.

Zelensky's presence — and Russian leader Vladimir Putin's absence, despite Soviet Russia's key role in winning the war in Europe — is highly symbolic given how the war in Ukraine is casting a shadow over the day's events.

Several world leaders have already used their speeches to cast parallels between Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the aggression of Nazi Germany that sparked World War II.
