Some vendors may process your personal data on the basis of legitimate interest, which you can object to by managing your options below. Look for a link at the bottom of this page to manage or withdraw consent in privacy and cookie settings.

Data preferences

Manage your data

You can choose how your personal data is used. Vendors want your permission to do the following:

TCF vendors

Store and/or access information on a device

Cookies, device or similar online identifiers (e.g. login-based identifiers, randomly assigned identifiers, network based identifiers) together with other information (e.g. browser type and information, language, screen size, supported technologies etc.) can be stored or read on your device to recognise it each time it connects to an app or to a website, for one or several of the purposes presented here.

Use limited data to select advertising

Advertising presented to you on this service can be based on limited data, such as the website or app you are using, your non-precise location, your device type or which content you are (or have been) interacting with (for example, to limit the number of times an ad is presented to you).

Create profiles for personalised advertising

Information about your activity on this service (such as forms you submit, content you look at) can be stored and combined with other information about you (for example, information from your previous activity on this service and other websites or apps) or similar users. This is then used to build or improve a profile about you (that might include possible interests and personal aspects). Your profile can be used (also later) to present advertising that appears more relevant based on your possible interests by this and other entities.

Use profiles to select personalised advertising

Advertising presented to you on this service can be based on your advertising profiles, which can reflect your activity on this service or other websites or apps (like the forms you submit, content you look at), possible interests and personal aspects.

Create profiles to personalise content

Information about your activity on this service (for instance, forms you submit, non-advertising content you look at) can be stored and combined with other information about you (such as your previous activity on this service or other websites or apps) or similar users. This is then used to build or improve a profile about you (which might for example include possible interests and personal aspects). Your profile can be used (also later) to present content that appears more relevant based on your possible interests, such as by adapting the order in which content is shown to you, so that it is even easier for you to find content that matches your interests.

Use profiles to select personalised content

Content presented to you on this service can be based on your content personalisation profiles, which can reflect your activity on this or other services (for instance, the forms you submit, content you look at), possible interests and personal aspects. This can for example be used to adapt the order in which content is shown to you, so that it is even easier for you to find (non-advertising) content that matches your interests.

Measure advertising performance

Information regarding which advertising is presented to you and how you interact with it can be used to determine how well an advert has worked for you or other users and whether the goals of the advertising were reached. For instance, whether you saw an ad, whether you clicked on it, whether it led you to buy a product or visit a website, etc. This is very helpful to understand the relevance of advertising campaigns.

Measure content performance

Information regarding which content is presented to you and how you interact with it can be used to determine whether the (non-advertising) content e.g. reached its intended audience and matched your interests. For instance, whether you read an article, watch a video, listen to a podcast or look at a product description, how long you spent on this service and the web pages you visit etc. This is very helpful to understand the relevance of (non-advertising) content that is shown to you.

Understand audiences through statistics or combinations of data from different sources

Reports can be generated based on the combination of data sets (like user profiles, statistics, market research, analytics data) regarding your interactions and those of other users with advertising or (non-advertising) content to identify common characteristics (for instance, to determine which target audiences are more receptive to an ad campaign or to certain contents).

Develop and improve services

Information about your activity on this service, such as your interaction with ads or content, can be very helpful to improve products and services and to build new products and services based on user interactions, the type of audience, etc. This specific purpose does not include the development or improvement of user profiles and identifiers.

Use limited data to select content

Content presented to you on this service can be based on limited data, such as the website or app you are using, your non-precise location, your device type, or which content you are (or have been) interacting with (for example, to limit the number of times a video or an article is presented to you).

Ensure security, prevent and detect fraud, and fix errors

Your data can be used to monitor for and prevent unusual and possibly fraudulent activity (for example, regarding advertising, ad clicks by bots), and ensure systems and processes work properly and securely. It can also be used to correct any problems you, the publisher or the advertiser may encounter in the delivery of content and ads and in your interaction with them.

Deliver and present advertising and content

Certain information (like an IP address or device capabilities) is used to ensure the technical compatibility of the content or advertising, and to facilitate the transmission of the content or ad to your device.

Match and combine data from other data sources

Information about your activity on this service may be matched and combined with other information relating to you and originating from various sources (for instance your activity on a separate online service, your use of a loyalty card in-store, or your answers to a survey), in support of the purposes explained in this notice.

Link different devices

In support of the purposes explained in this notice, your device might be considered as likely linked to other devices that belong to you or your household (for instance because you are logged in to the same service on both your phone and your computer, or because you may use the same Internet connection on both devices).

Identify devices based on information transmitted automatically

Your device might be distinguished from other devices based on information it automatically sends when accessing the Internet (for instance, the IP address of your Internet connection or the type of browser you are using) in support of the purposes exposed in this notice.

Use precise geolocation data

With your acceptance, your precise location (within a radius of less than 500 metres) may be used in support of the purposes explained in this notice.

The last shows of their 2022 album cycle for the Grammy-nominated “The Last Goodbye” are the largest outings of the act’s career, with nine dates including stops at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden and the picturesque Gorge Amphitheater in their home state of Washington.

The eclectic EDM duo of Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills have no identifiable radio hits. Yet, since 2012, they’ve built one of the most fervent fan bases in electronic music with four studio albums, a handful of singles and EPs, and consistent touring.

Starting as like-minded college students at Western Washington University in 2012, the pair have become a symbiotic partnership known worldwide that lives in the space between rave culture and arena pop.

Influenced as much by the Beach Boys as they are by Moby and Animal Collective, Knight and Mills traverse decades of recorded sound to craft soundscapes through samples and soaring vocal features that range from heavenly to heavy — both sonically and emotionally. Their music has taken them from tiny clubs to top-line and headlining performances at festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo.

The music is brought to life through a cinematic production that has few parallels in modern concert presentation, creating sensory overload through large-scale visuals, bursts of fire, canopies of lasers, confetti cannons, and — what has become the duo’s live signature — an epic drumline that provides percussive wallop and eye-popping entertainment.

Odesza will pay homage to everything they’ve done in their career so far with the finale, which they say will be the longest show they’ve produced. Recently The Times spoke with Knight and Mills about the album and what inspired it, their creative process, what fans can expect from the finale, and more.

Odesza seemingly levels up with each album cycle. With the creation of the album “The Last Goodbye,” what were you trying to do and convey?

Mills: We’re always paying attention to evolving. It’s really important to us to change and move forward and not rest on our laurels too hard. But we don’t want to lose the thing that makes us us. We’re really focused on trying lots of ideas and seeing where that takes us. And then the things that stick tend to be the guiding light for us. If we keep gravitating towards one song, it becomes this goal post for us.

That’s a big reason why “The Last Goodbye” was our first single. It’s this big journey track. It pushes forward a lot of sounds that we were trying to make before, and also new things. We use that as the tent pole for us to decide what this record means. What’s the journey we’re trying to take people on? What’s our new sound?

We were trying to answer those questions throughout a lot of COVID. We wanted to look back and not feel like we were trying to just lean into the sadness there. We wanted it to feel hopeful, and feel like something bringing people back together when the world opened up again.

Knight: Headphone-based records have been a lot of what we’ve leaned into. And of course, we love enjoying music that way. This one definitely is a little more dance oriented and started with the idea that you want to play it out with your friends and be in those communal spaces because that was such an important aspect of coming out of the pandemic.

SoCal has a new record pressing plant. Can it meet Swiftie-sized demand?

You can hear the snippets, family recordings and stuff. That was a starting point for us, just looking back at how we got to where we were, and who made us who we are. So a lot of these tracks started as just an ode to our family and friends. We wanted to have that unearthing and be a little more vulnerable than we’ve been in the past.

Mills: A big part of the record was trying to take these things from the past, make them modern, but also do it in our own way that adds our unique twist on it. It’s pretty hard to do that and not screw up some great music. For instance, Bettye LaVette and [the song] “The Last Goodbye.” That’s such a powerful, incredible record, and you want to respect it and do it correctly. Getting her blessing through it all was such an incredible experience for us.

Knight : There’s a lot of these Moby references, throughout — the kind of golden era of electronic music, being like Boards of Canada, Four Tet stuff. We really tried to go back to what we fell in love with in the first place, add our twist to it, and bring it a little more in the modern world. So, using sampling techniques, and then trying to use as many modern synth elements to give it this blending of two worlds. That was definitely a big task. But something we really enjoyed doing.

Listening to Catacombkid and BeachesBeaches (Knight and Mills pre-Odesza solo projects), you were doing similar things separate from each other, and then found each other. How serendipitous or weird was that, to find almost your musical mirror?

Mills : Yeah, it’s very love at first sight. I feel like it’s weird, because you say musical mirror, but I think we’re super different, but the same. That’s what makes it work is, we push each other in different directions, but it’s for the same goal.

And that combination is really potent. That’s what excited us when we first met and we were jamming together. He would add something I would have never added myself. But then it made so much sense to me once I heard it. And I think we were doing that back and forth. And you feed off that energy.

I spent that entire summer just driving back up to Bellingham [Washington], where we went to school, just to keep jamming with Clay because it just felt so special. We both thought we were going to have to get real jobs pretty soon. So it was like our last hurrah. And that’s what our first record was.

Knight : We both went to Western Washington University. It’s very band focused. There’s a lot of folk rock, even a lot of punk. We were the only guys leaning into electronic stuff really.

Cheryl Waters of Seattle radio station KEXP said your sound feels like the Pacific Northwest. How would you explain that to people who haven’t been there?

Mills : Because of the weather, you’re usually stuck inside. So it harbors a lot of creativity, from just being inside. I think we’ve spent so many days overcast and rainy and us in our rooms trying to make music and experimenting with noises and stuff.

Knight : The weather is such an important part of our background. I think we do a lot of really good writing when you’re hunkered down. But there is this longing for this warmth, longing for this bright stuff that you just don’t get from the weather. So we put it in the music, to create some sort of that feeling back.

Mills : We’re fighting seasonal depression.

Dance duo Justice just crushed Coachella. Eight years between albums, ‘We don’t like to be too exposed.’

You create arena-ready music with pop hooks and emotive elements that people latch on to. How do you choose your collaborations?

Knight : When we first started collaborating with vocalists, we were just doing random vocal sessions with writers. And we’re hitting a wall here and there, because the music wasn’t coming together in a genuine enough way.

What we started doing is just work with artists we really wanted to work with, no matter what size. Honestly, the smaller artists, maybe a little less known, aren’t so boxed into a sound. They’re a little more willing to explore and push their boundaries.

Odesza performing on big stage surrounded by blue light

Odesza is known for the live show. How did your show evolve to the place where it is now, and how do you expand upon that for a finale?

Mills : It started when we first did our first show. We had no idea how to make a live show. We found [an] Ableton template of how to make a live set. And then we just started building off that.

While that seems wrong and silly, what it did is it really allowed us to not only have the freedom to keep changing it, but also learn in real time what works, what doesn’t work, how to adapt our sound, how to change our sound.

Now I think we’ve done enough shows where we can start imagining what things are going to be like live. And because we’ve slowly built this community of people that want to see us, I think they’re more willing to indulge in these more cinematic things or theatrical things that we’re trying to convey.

Us being fans of film and soundtracks — and all these other things — and that coming into the music, we just try to emphasize it in the live show. We’re really lucky that people are along for that ride.

Knight : There’s always something to prove for us in some of these settings, because we didn’t have a massive single to lean on, which we can play at the end where no one really cares what you do through the rest of the set. … All of it has to be good. People have to walk away being like, “What the f— did I just watch?”

Jeff Gordon on his post-driving career and that rumored Mike Bliss airport fight: 12 Questions

Jeff Gordon

Each week, The Athletic asks the same 12 questions to a different race car driver. Up next: Jeff Gordon, the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Hall of Famer who is now vice chairman at Hendrick Motorsports.

1. What is currently the No. 1 thing on your bucket list?

Maybe the Kentucky Derby. That one’s always been on my list. I would also say Monaco. Both of those races always seem to conflict with our racing schedule and NASCAR schedule. So I don’t know if I’ll get to it anytime soon.

Yeah, it’s hard to get to Monaco when you have both the Indy 500 and Coke 600 now.

Yeah, I checked with Zak Brown (of McLaren) and was like, “Can it happen? Can you do all three in one day?” And it’s impossible.

2. How much media coverage of NASCAR do you consume?

A lot more now than I probably did before. Just because with my role, I’m tapped into our content team and our marketing team and our sponsors and even our drivers and our branding at Hendrick Motorsports. My drive every morning is about 30 minutes from my house to the shop. And so it’s SiriusXM Radio pretty much on that drive in and drive home.

And then I do what most of us do, where I can’t help myself just scrolling through Instagram and YouTube and all those. Not much TikTok, although my daughter (Ella, now 16) got me into TikTok. So a little bit of that, too.

3. Beyond winning, what is the best way to measure success in racing?

One of the big things is progression. Show me you’re learning and applying it and getting better and improving and progressing through your career. That’s success, because if you do that, you’re probably going to end up somewhere where it’s going to be rewarded and where you can showcase your talent and your hard work you’ve put in. If somebody throughout their career never stops progressing, they’ve had a successful career.

4. What is an opinion you have about NASCAR that you don’t think is shared by the fans?

Conspiracy theories. (Laughs.) Listen, fans are loyal. They’re loyal to their brand, they’re loyal to an OEM (manufacturer), they’re loyal to a driver or team. And so I think when things don’t go their way, then a lot of them start saying, “Oh, must be that NASCAR needed this for this reason.” And I’ve never seen that to be true. Not from where I sit.

And then the more you try to explain it to people, the more they just don’t believe you.

Oh no, they won’t believe you. I didn’t say it’s a debate. (Laughs.)

5. What is the biggest thing fans don’t realize about what you do for a living?

Coming into an office about every day of the week. I’ve gone from being behind the wheel for many years to being up in the broadcast booth to answering lots of emails and taking lots of calls and being in lots of meetings. I’m super invested in a company that luckily I’ve been part of for 30-plus years. I’ve seen how it’s grown. I’ve seen the investment Rick (Hendrick) has made and been a part of that. So I love this company, and I love seeing it be successful, and I love the fact I get to play some role in that.

6. I’m doing a couple of wild-card-type questions here. I went back to our 2010 12 Questions interview and at the time, I’d asked you how long you wanted to continue driving. As it turns out, you said, “I feel like I have five more years.” (He retired after the 2015 season.) But here’s what I still don’t understand: Aside from maybe desire or motivation, what would physically prevent you from getting in the car at age 52 and being successful? Is your eyesight not as good? Your hand-eye coordination? Why couldn’t you if you wanted to?

So I did this Porsche Carrera Cup race a couple years ago (at Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and that was about as good of a measuring stick for exactly what you’re talking about as possible. I’d been out of the car for several years and you’re never as sharp as the guys who are doing it every week. I just heard Kevin Harvick talk about this (when he filled in for Kyle Larson during All-Star Race practice at North Wilkesboro). He’s only been out of the car for six months and he’s saying, “You can’t just jump in here and compete with these guys.”

So first, it’s out of respect for the people who do it well and work so hard at it and are tied into their team and tied into the vehicle on a weekly basis. It’s so hard to compete with that — I don’t care how talented you are.

And then the other thing I experienced in that race was just the physicality of it. I was exhausted. I realized how good of shape I was in driving race cars. I mean, of course, I look at myself in the mirror and I see I’ve gained weight. I don’t look the same way. But I still felt like, “I’m still strong. My heart is good, and my lungs. I can exercise and all those things, and I can handle it.” But I got in that race car, and I was just wiped out.

It’s just forgetting how much that car puts your body through. Maybe I took that for granted a little bit just because I raced my whole life and raced every weekend, so I felt like I was in good shape. But I didn’t realize how good of shape.

Yes, the eyesight goes. Your depth perception goes a little bit. But your desire to put the car on the absolute edge changes as well. You know, a lot of people would say, “Oh, when you have kids, you have a family now, that must be in the back of your mind.” That was never in the back of my mind. When I was driving race cars, I got in there and I flipped the switch and the switch was on. There was nothing else other than driving this car to the best of my ability and putting it out there as far as I needed to.

But after you step out of it, honestly, I went up into the booth with Fox and I watched and I said, “Those guys are crazy! There’s no way I used to do that.” Now I could push myself to a pace that I’m comfortable with, and that pace would not be good enough to put the car at the speed it needs to be.

7. I went back to our 2014 12 Questions interview. I’d asked you: “Fans often come up to you and want to discuss a moment or race from your career. Which one comes up the most?” Ten years later and now that you’re retired, what do they want to bring up from your career?

I had someone say, “You were a huge part of my childhood. Watching you every week changed my life.” And it’s hard for me to grasp that. But to hear somebody say that certainly is humbling, and it makes you really proud you had an impact on somebody’s life like that. So that was really cool.

I saw another guy had a 24 tattoo on his shoulder. You have to understand: I don’t like needles at all. So for somebody to actually go through that kind of pain to put that on their body, I have the utmost respect.

8. What do you like about the place that you grew up? You grew up in a couple of different places, so I don’t know which one you want to go with.

Well, if I go back to California (Vallejo), it taught me a lot of life lessons, like how to be tough. Growing up in a public school that was very diverse and very challenging. I wasn’t an athlete, and I wasn’t an academic. Luckily, I was a race car driver, because I would have been very lost in that system. But I was also scrappy. I had to hold my own because I was a little guy. So it taught me how to do that.

It also made me appreciate when I moved to Indiana — that school system and the friends I made and being able to do what I love, which was racing. California was holding me back from that because I was so young. All I kept hearing is, “You can’t,” and “You’re not allowed to,” and “The laws or the rules don’t allow you to.” So I was happy to get out of California for that reason and come to Indiana and it was like, “I can go race and drive anywhere basically I want to.”

And I got to go through high school right down the road from Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the place I dreamed about racing my whole life, and then eventually got to race there with NASCAR. But those days in California, growing up in Vallejo, really taught me about what you have to do to apply yourself and break out to get somewhere in life and also how to be tough.

9. What personality trait are you the most proud of?

My kindness? But my wife might not always agree with that after being married 18 years. (Laughs.) I always wanted to be balanced. I wanted to be happy, but not too happy; be angry, but not too angry if it required that. It was staying well-balanced just like I love race cars — I love a well-balanced race car, and that’s what makes it go faster. That’s what makes me who I am. I have good days and bad days, but I never have really, really bad days, and I don’t think I ever have really, really good days. I’m just solid, happy and very appreciative. Humble. Sometimes I’m arrogant, too. (Laughs.)

10. Which driver would you least like to be stuck with on an elevator?

Probably Robby Gordon. Robby and I get along fine now, but of any driver, he has probably gotten under my skin the most. Even more than (Brad) Keselowski. Just go back and watch New Hampshire whatever year that was (2001). We won the championship and 9/11 happened and then we went back late (in November). I’m pretty sure it was that race. I’ve never been that angry. (Laughs.)

11. What is a run-in you’ve had with a driver that TV or the media missed?

Mike Bliss.

Oh! The one at the airport, if I heard right?

Yeah. We were both struggling at Chicago (in 2005), running 20-something. It was not a good day; at least it certainly wasn’t for me. I was pretty unhappy with what we had out there on the racetrack that day, just struggling and trying to get to the finish and go home.

I remember with a few laps to go, we went into Turn 1 and I was side-by-side with somebody and (Bliss) took me three-wide going into (Turn 1) for 20-whatever (place) and crashed all of us. To me, that was just absolutely absurd. Why would you do something like that for that position? Was it really that important?

So we were going to the airport and I was with Brian Vickers and I said, “Man, if I see Mike Bliss, I swear I’m gonna punch him.” And we get to the airport and he’s like the first guy I see. Going back to the question (about personality traits), I am a man of my word — like to a fault. If I say I’m going to do something — to a fan, to a colleague, to a sponsor, whatever it is — if I say I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna do it. And I said I was gonna do it, and I ended up doing it.

So if Vickers wasn’t in the car and you’re just by yourself and you hadn’t said it out loud, you might not have?

Exactly. Maybe not. Not one of my proudest moments, but I was angry. And I did not cool down by the time I got to the airport. (Note: Bliss showed up at the racetrack the next week with a black eye, sparking unconfirmed rumors of an altercation with Gordon.)

Jeff Gordon and Mike Bliss

12. Each week, I ask a driver to give me a question for the next person. Mario Andretti was the last one. He says: “How are you coping with your career after coming out of the cockpit? Is it as satisfying as driving? I doubt it. So how do you view that satisfaction for your future?”

I don’t know if anything will be as satisfying as the birth of your children and winning major events or a championship. So satisfying. But I will say: I’m far more satisfied in what I’m doing now at this point in my life than I thought I would be. I thought I would really miss racing and I wouldn’t find something I was passionate about or interested in.

When I do something, I want to put a lot of effort into it, and I want to be good at it. So I was like, “What could that possibly be?” Now this job is a little more challenging than I even anticipated. To be good at it takes a lot of work and a lot of time because it’s so vast. So many areas of the business you’re touching.

But I’m enjoying it. It’s awesome. I get to work and be close to my mentor Rick Hendrick and learn from him. He’s not only a great person, but he’s just a brilliant businessperson, too. So to partner with him, I feel like I couldn’t be in a better post-driving position than I am now.

Do you have a question I can ask the next person?

I could just say, “Car or driver?” and just lay that one out there. What’s the percentage of which one is more important?

Oregon Ducks Baseball vs. 'Perfect' Texas A&M: Super Regional Preview

  • San Diego Toreros
  • Texas Longhorns

The Oregon Ducks baseball team will play at Texas A&M (47-13) in the Super Regionals beginning Friday or Saturday. The Ducks and Aggies will battle in a best-of-three series, with the winner punching a ticket to Omaha for the Men's College World Series.

Oregon (39-18) is heating up at the perfect time but will face another streaking squad in the Aggies.

The No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies beat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 9-4 Sunday night to win the College Station Regional at Olsen Field. The Aggies went a perfect 3-0, successfully defending their home turf with wins over every opponent (Grambling, Texas, and Louisiana.)

The Ducks will need to account for Texas A&M third baseman Gavin Grahovac. Grahovac smacked his 22nd homer of the season in the ninth inning on Sunday, which broke the record by an Aggies freshman.

This Texas A&M squad also set a program record for most home runs in the season, when shortstop and slugger Ali Camarillo hit a solo bomb in the seventh inning on Sunday. After smacking five total home runs on Sunday, the Aggies now have 130 home runs this season.

The Ducks advanced from the UC Santa Barbara Regional, where they beat the No. 18 Gauchos twice and San Diego.

The Ducks are advancing to the Super Regionals for the second-straight season for the first time ever. The Aggies are advancing to the Super Regionals for the second time in three seasons.

Oregon bounced back from a winless Pac-12 Tournament appearance and hopes to keep the positive momentum alive.

“We knew that we had our hands full, and we had our hands full all weekend,” UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. “And we were blessed enough to come out on top. I’m just proud of the guys that I get a chance to represent, and their grit and determination. We got a few breaks, and we had a lot of really quality play.”

The three-game Oregon winning streak is with much thanks to excellent pitching and the bats coming alive. UO pitcheer Kevin Seitter is fresh a four-hit shutout Sunday. Seitter, Grinsell and RJ Gordon combined to go 23 innings while allowing just three earned runs across wins over the weekend.

“From the first inning on, my guys were making plays behind me left and right,” said Seitter, a senior transfer from Quinnipiac. “It was really fun to watch, and just to be a part of something like that is really special. Pitch-wise my fastball was working pretty well, and I had my breaking stuff, which was great. But I don’t want to take away from the team effort at all. That was one of the best things I’ve ever seen, and it was so fun to be a part of.”
