'Come and go as you please': Here's how overnight cruise stops work

carnival cruise with overnight stay

If you've ever sailed on a cruise , you know there's no grace period from the ship leaving the dock. But on a recent cruise, it was nearly 5 p.m. when I was heading out on my first shore excursion.

I caught an evening show at San Francisco's magic speakeasy The Magic Patio and when I returned to the port, Princess Cruises' Discovery Princess ship was lit up for the evening, glowing in the Bay.

The sight was a rarity because we'd normally be sailing away by that time, our host explained over the loudspeaker on the bus. But that night, the ship served less as a means of transportation than a floating hotel during our two-day visit.

While many cruises stop only for a day, some itineraries include overnight stays that give guests more time to explore and see destinations from a new vantage point.

"One of the common gripes for cruising is you don't really get to experience the destination if you're only there for X number of hours," said Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel. "The cruise lines' answer to that is, 'Well, let's stay overnight.'"

What are the benefits of overnight cruise stays?

For starters, travelers don't have to feel rushed to return to the ship before it leaves. "You're able to really experience what the port has to offer in terms of nightlife," Feldman said.

Tillie and Joseph L. James Jr., luxury travel advisers who co-own Tillie James Travel, said longer stays allow them to arrange unique experiences for their clients, like private museum tours or dinners at local restaurants. Cruise lines may offer nighttime excursions as well.

Some activities may be even better after dark, like perusing Christmas markets . "It's so beautiful to see them at night," said Tillie. "During the day, you can go walk through those, but during the nights, when everything's lit up and you smell all the food, it's just a wonderful experience."

Those kinds of stops are becoming easier to find, too, according to Feldman. He noted an uptick in itineraries featuring overnights over the past two or three years.

"It's a growing trend," he said.

Do I have to stay on the cruise ship during an overnight stay?

Not necessarily. Feldman said cruise ships typically leave the gangway open all night for guests. "You can come and go as you please," he said. "And if you want to go out and, let's say, party until 3 in the morning, you can do that and then come back."

You can sleep in without missing out too. Most ships also don't leave for their next destination until late afternoon or evening, giving passengers nearly a full second day in port.

On my cruise, knowing I had extra time in San Francisco, I didn't feel pressured to cram everything into one day. The ship offered a nice home base after the show, and I grabbed a quick bite to eat on the way back to my cabin.

What cruises have overnight stays?

Travelers are more likely to find overnights on itineraries that feature "some of your larger destinations where there's just so much to do, people want to get immersed," Feldman said, like Athens, Rome, or Southampton, England.

Looking for cruise deals? Here's why they may be harder to find

Some lines market their sailings with a particular focus on overnight stays, he added, such as Princess, Azamara, Silversea Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises . Longer itineraries, like world cruises that can sail for months at a time, may also feature more overnights as they have more time to fill.

And having even just one extra day can shift the hop-off, hop-on dynamic of a cruise. "You're like, 'Oh, I don't have to be back by any certain time. I don't have to be back until tomorrow,'" said Feldman. "So, it kind of changes your perspective of how you can approach a port."

Can I Get Off a Cruise Early in Another Port? (Partial Cruises)

Note: The following article is intended for U.S. citizens sailing round trip itineraries from U.S. ports. The rules discussed may not apply for other countries. You also shouldn’t take this as legal advice. Contact your cruise line for their guidance if you would like to do a partial cruise.

MSC Divina in port in Ocean Cay

For most people, taking a cruise is simple. You hop on from a cruise port in the U.S., sail on the trip, and then return to the cruise port where you embarked.

It’s easy and convenient. These cruises that begin and end in the same port are called “closed-looped” cruises. They are the standard in cruising for Americans and make the process of immigration and customs simple. In fact, you don’t even need a passport to sail (though it is highly suggested).

But there are times where you might not want to — or simply can’t — sail a closed-loop cruise. Some examples include:

  • You get sick or injured on your cruise and can’t continue on your journey
  • You miss the ship and the cruise departs without you
  • You simply want to spend more time in a port city (such as taking a cruise to Cozumel and then staying there for a week)
  • It’s cheaper to take a cruise to a port city than it is to fly, so you want to sail there instead
  • You have to get back home due to a family emergency
  • Your experience on the cruise ship is so bad that you refuse to get back on board

No matter the reason you want to get off the ship early, it’s definitely a common question — but a rare occurrence. The vast majority of passengers simply sail their normal cruise itinerary.

But can you just get off the ship and return home on your own terms?

The answer is yes, but there are some major complications (and laws) that should be considered.

An Old Law Causes Confusion for Disembarkation

You’d be forgiven if you have never heard of the Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886 (also known as the PVSA). The law was enacted in the 19th century to protect U.S. maritime interests. It is still on the books today , and it essentially says that foreign ships can’t transport passengers between U.S. ports, or they will face a fine.

Today, nearly every cruise ship operates under a foreign flag. That means they can’t pick you up in say, New York, sail to Miami, and let you leave the ship permanently.

The spirit of the law was to keep foreign ships from picking up passengers in one U.S. port and transporting them to another U.S. port, thereby competing with American vessels. Instead, only U.S.-flagged ships can make these trips.

Now, there are certain caveats and exceptions. But the major points are relatively clear regarding disembarking passengers in the United States sailing on a foreign vessel:

  • A passenger can’t sail from one U.S. port and get off at another U.S. port (even for the day) without the trip including a foreign port of call in the itinerary.
  • If a ship sails a journey to a “nearby” foreign port, a passenger still can’t leave the ship permanently at a different U.S. port than the embarkation point (nearby foreign ports are those in North America like in the Bahamas or Mexico).
  • If the ship sails a journey to a “distant” foreign port, the passenger can leave the ship permanently in another U.S. port (distant foreign ports are those outside North America).

In most cases, if you sail from a U.S. port and want to get off at another U.S. port on the same trip, it’s going to cost the cruise line a PVSA fine, which is likely to be passed on to you. ( The fine is currently almost $800 per passenger .)

That’s what happened recently on a cruise from New York:

Where there is some question is if the law applies to passengers who depart a U.S. port, but disembark permanently at a foreign port.

In that case, the rules appear to say that it is fine to do so. According to the Code of Federal Regulations :

“Any vessel of the United States, whether or not entitled under paragraph (a) of this section to engage in the coastwise trade, and any foreign vessel may proceed between points in the United States embraced within the coastwise laws to discharge cargo or passengers laden at a foreign port, to lade cargo or passengers for a foreign port , in ballast, or to transport certain articles in accordance with § 4.93.”

In this case, leaving the ship appears to be fine according to the U.S. law. And in fact, there are many cruises that start from the U.S. and then let passengers off in a foreign country, such as Transatlantic trips from the United States to Europe.

Here’s what Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently said on their website (note that we found this specific passage several years ago, but have been unable to relocate the original source) :

“Does U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) fine cruise ships that allow passengers to disembark before the end of the cruise’s itinerary?

“The Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA), 46 U.S.C. 55103 (19 CFR 4.80a), is one of the several coastwise laws enforced by CBP which prohibits the transportation of passengers between points in the U.S. in any vessel other than a vessel that has a coastwise endorsement, i.e a vessel that is built in and owned by persons who are citizens of the United States.

“The penalty for violating the PVSA is $300 per passenger carried and is assessed against the carrier/cruise line. For example, an Argentinean-flagged cruise ship picks up passengers in Miami then sails to various ports of call, including Bermuda, Charleston, South Carolina, and Annapolis, Maryland before returning to Miami. While passengers may leave the vessel to see the U.S. ports, they must return to the vessel before the cruise itinerary ends, i.e. before the vessel returns to Miami, in order for the carrier to avoid a PVSA violation. If passengers were to disembark, i.e. finally and permanently leave the vessel in Bermuda, the vessel would not incur a PVSA penalty because Bermuda is not a U.S. point.”

In other words, if you sail on a cruise and leave the ship permanently in a foreign port, then it should be allowed according the U.S. law.

One thing to note: Just because U.S. law does not have a problem with passengers leaving the ship in a foreign country, it is possible that the foreign country could have laws against cruise passengers staying. You’ll want to check with your cruise line for details.

Leaving the Ship Early in a Foreign Port Usually Not Allowed by Cruise Lines

Costa Maya, Mexico

In practice, except in some circumstances (such as a medical emergency) allowing passengers to freely leave the ship permanently in a foreign port appears rare.

For example,  Royal Caribbean’s website used to confirm that getting off the ship permanently in a foreign port instead of returning home was ok, as long as you went through the proper channels. In fact, it explained the entire process. Now, it simply says that:

“Royal Caribbean no longer allows cruise passengers to pre-plan early debark or late embarkation for any of our ships.”

Other cruise lines say even less. In fact, searching the website of all the major lines, Royal Caribbean was the only one we found that mentioned anything about debarking early at another port — even if it was to say it’s not allowed.

Want to Leave Early? Always Talk to the Cruise Line First

While others cruise lines made no mention we found of leaving the ship early, it’s worth giving the cruise line a call if you want to leave early and see exactly what their policy is regarding the situation.

If they say that it is not allowed due to the PVSA, you might have to talk to a supervisor (the law does get confusing) as that law only applies to leaving the ship in a U.S. port.

You might also have to fill out some paperwork before disembarking. Keep in mind as well that legal or not, the cruise line may have a policy of not letting passengers debark early.

No matter, if you plan to leave early anyway, be sure the cruise line knows your plans.  Otherwise, they may believe they have a missing passenger.

You will also need to inquire about immigration status in the foreign port. After all, while there should be a record of your travel to the foreign country, you won’t have a passport stamp to prove your entry. This could make for a tougher time when exiting the country.

Keep in mind that you will also have to incur the full cost of traveling back home, however you decide to do so. For most people, this means having to buy a plane ticket back home after their stay. It goes without saying that you can’t just hop on the next ship that comes to port to cruise back. Cruises just don’t work that way.

Finally, you won’t get any sort of refund from the cruise line for the days you don’t sail. You’ll have to eat the cost of the entire cruise, even though you aren’t aboard the ship for some of the journey.

The Bottom Line on Taking a Partial Cruise

You should keep in mind that we aren’t lawyers, nor experts in maritime law. Our understanding, however, is that Americans sailing from the United States to foreign ports can end their cruise early (a so-called partial cruise) in another country without any sort of legal penalty.

However, cruise lines themselves may not allow their passengers to debark the ship in a foreign port early . Keep in mind there are also finer points of the law that might apply to your specific situation.

Frankly, we are of the opinion that if you know for certain you want to disembark in a port and not finish your cruise, it’s much easier just to use an alternate way to get there. This way you don’t have to worry about any legal issues, potential fines, or the cruise line’s policies.

Weather caused flight cancellations and I was out on possible space stand by for 4 more flights and did not get there. We missed New York embarkation but thought I would just board the ship, the next stop Cape Canaveral. They charged me $947 per person to do this. US immigration. But if I flew to Cozumel, days later I could get on the missed ship for $50. I agree these old laws need to be changed for cruise ships, because it is becoming common occurrence for airline malfunction and for medical reasons!

What if it’s a 1 way cruise to Vancouver. The itenerary says we arrive thursday in vancover but the disembarkation is friday morning? Once we leave the ship thursday can we just not come back since that is our final port? Thank you.

I have a booking for a 30 days Carnival cruise in September, from Seattle to Brisbane, Australia. I would love to debark in Indonesia before arriving to Australia. I spent a month in Australia, five months ago and would like to stay in Indonesia longer. Any advice on what should I do to make it happen? Thank you!

The best thing is to call the cruise line. Given that the cruise isn’t a closed-loop journey, you might be able to get off the ship in Indonesia. My understanding is that it doesn’t violate the law, but it can be complex.

On a round-trip cruise to Hawaii from San Diego, I became seriously ill in Hawaii and flew back to Oregon from Hilo. Per the antiquated maritime law, I was fined $941, which is the set fine, not $800. I wish you had included information about whom I might contact to discuss submitting medical documentation to try to get my money back. The cruise line ioffers no help in this.

One suggestion might be calling your representative’s office. They have constituent services that can help with this sort of thing.

Can a cruise line ban you, or put you on a ban list for all cruise lines, if you leave in a foreign country (say for a month), then try to catch a cruise back to the U.S.?

Not sure how you would catch a cruise back to the U.S. from a foreign country. Cruises are sold from the departure port. So if I sail from Miami to Cozumel and back, I can’t buy a ticket from Cozumel to Miami only.

We wanted to leave a cruise early because my husband could not maneuver the long distances Around the ships long hallways We were told we could not get off unless medical excuse. So we went to the medical center. $10,000 later he was transported to a hell hole hospital and held against his will for six days. Princess cruise line and their insurance did nothing to help us! Beware

Pre-Covid, I was able to end my cruise early in Nassau, before it’s scheduled end the following day in Miami. This was on a Carnival ship, and it required pre-approval of the cruise line and the United States CBP. They arranged my meeting with Immigration in Nassau, to receive a stamp in my passport so I could show legal entry when I departed the Bahamas the following week.

Thanks for sharing!

FYI: https://www.royalcaribbean.com/faq/questions/different-departure-port-city

Q Can I join a Royal Caribbean cruise after it starts or leave before it ends? A Royal Caribbean no longer allows cruise passengers to pre-plan early debark or late embarkation for any of our ships.

This surprising. I thought that if you missed the embarkation (especially through no fault of your own) you could embark at any of the next ports of call. I know The Jones Act can make it tricky to leave cruise in mid itinerary.

We recently missed our flight out of Tampa due to our plane having mechanical issues and we thought we could board the ship at our first stop in Key West but were told it would cost us $750 each to do this. Obviously, we missed the cruise. They need to change this law!

These New Cruise Itineraries Offer Overnight Stays in Every Port

For many, experiencing a destination's nightlife is an integral part of travel—from exploring the brightly lit streets of Tokyo for an evening of karaoke and street food to bringing out the black tie attire for a posh night out at Monaco's Casino de Monte Carlo. However, when it comes to cruises , passengers usually end up spending most of their nights at sea.

But this year, luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas is launching a new array of itineraries specially designed for travelers to be able to experience port cities after dark. Called “Immersive Overnights,” the new voyages offer the industry's first-ever itineraries for which the ship stays overnight (sometimes two) in every port of call, according to Regent. The sleepover sailings will take place in fall 2024 and 2025 in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe , and Asia .

Traditionally, cruises depart each port in the late afternoon, meaning that travelers can only see a destination by day. When traveling this way, cruisers can miss out on iconic experiences in many cities—like Tokyo , Barcelona , and Berlin —where the nightlife is a huge part of the local culture.

Overnight port stays have been a growing trend in the cruise industry over the last few years, with many of the top lines offering one or two sleepover stays in some of the more bustling cities in Europe and Asia. “It’s something travelers are demanding more of,” says Tom Baker , a travel specialist at Cruise Center. “Clients are looking for longer port times to enrich their cultural experiences ashore and some even will overnight ashore in a hotel in a key city [if it’s] farther inland to maximize port times,” Baker adds.

While overnighting in port has become increasingly popular throughout the industry, Regent says these are the first cruise itineraries to feature overnight stays in every port along the way.

The first of the Immersive Overnight sailings will take place in the Mediterranean in early October 2024, with three different voyages offered in the region through October and November. Each voyage will give passengers the opportunity to experience some of Europe’s most glamorous coastal cities after dark. The first sailing, a 10-day voyage on board Seven Seas Voyager features overnights in Trieste, Italy; Zadar, Croatia ; and two nights in Athens, Greece . Later in October, Voyager will offer another 10-day cruise, this time departing from Istanbul , with overnights in Dubrovnik , Rome , and Barcelona.

In spring 2025, Regent's second Immersive Overnights itinerary will launch in Asia, with a 14-day cruise from Japan, giving passengers the chance for nighttime revelry in some of the region’s most exciting cities. That voyage, which is on board Seven Seas Explorer , will spend the night in Kyoto, Japan ; Seoul, South Korea ; Shanghai ; and Tokyo.

The new overnight-focused itineraries “will change the way luxury travelers cruise,” Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, said in a statement . “These extended overnight experiences will allow guests unparalleled immersion in a range of incredible global destinations."

Each Immersive Overnight sailing will also feature special evening shore excursions, so passengers can make the most of seeing port cities at night. Regent has created 26 new excursions focusing on activities that are best experienced at dusk or nighttime, including sunset wine tasting in a Tuscan villa , an evening tour of Athens followed by a seaside dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a night spent in Split gazing at the city lights with a traditional a cappella performance over dinner.

The after-dark activities are a chance for cruisers to be immersed in their voyage’s destinations, instead of feeling rushed to explore a new city in just a few hours. According to Linda Speer , founder of Cruises by Linda, more travelers are seeking out slow travel experiences like these. “Passengers really like to dine locally as well as stroll, shop, and just experience a destination unhurriedly,” Speer says.

Spring and summer 2025 will also see Regent’s overnight itineraries return to Europe. Among the highlights on those voyages are two-night stays in Berlin, Stockholm , and Salerno, Italy, on the iconic Amalfi Coast . Single-night stays will also be offered in Copenhagen , Helsinki, and Monte Carlo.

Fares for the Immersive Overnight voyages currently start at $4,799 per person based on double stateroom occupancy.

Galveston cruise port: A guide to cruising from Texas

Melinda Crow

The Port of Galveston is the fourth-most-popular cruise home port in the U.S., having hosted 1.49 million cruise passengers in 2023.

While that's still a small number compared to the Florida ports ( Miami , Port Canaveral near Orlando and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades ), the Port of Galveston continues to grow. The ships are getting bigger, cruise lines are expanding the itineraries they offer from Galveston and, in 2025, MSC Cruises will begin homeporting in Galveston with the introduction of year-round sailings on MSC Seascape . The total number of ship calls on the port's 2024 calendar is 388.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most cruises from Galveston visit the Western Caribbean destinations of Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Belize; Jamaica; and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. However, you can find other options; for example, Carnival Cruise Line offers longer sailings (up to 14 nights) that include Eastern and Southern Caribbean ports.

Galveston itself is a beach destination worth spending time in either pre- or post-cruise, with a variety of hotel choices ranging from economy to luxury to historic. Families can find plenty to enjoy, and adults can enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife.

Royal Caribbean bases three ships here, offering a mix of eight-night Bahamas cruises, which visit Perfect Day at CocoCay, and four- to eight-night cruises primarily in the Western Caribbean.

Terminal 16 (opening in November 2025)

MSC Cruises will base MSC Seascape year-round at a new terminal in Galveston. The ship will sail to the Western Caribbean, visiting Cozumel, Roatan and Mexico's Costa Maya.

Terminals 25 and 28

Multiple cruise lines share terminals 25 and 28. Carnival rotates a fleet of four ships year-round in Galveston, including the line's Texas flagship, Carnival Jubilee . The fleet offers four- to 14-night cruises throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Princess Cruises sails seasonally from Galveston, offering four- to 11-night cruises in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Norwegian Cruise Line rotates a variety of ships seasonally through the Port of Galveston, offering seven- to 14-night sailings throughout the Caribbean, including visits to the line's private island, Harvest Caye, in Belize. Norwegian also sometimes offers one-way cruises from Galveston on point-to-point sailings to other destinations like Central and South America.

Disney Magic runs seasonally from Galveston, offering four- to six-night Western Caribbean itineraries.

Closest airports to the Galveston cruise port

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is in north Houston, approximately 71 miles from the Port of Galveston. Airlines that fly to IAH include United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Delta fans can save with the airline's annual companion certificate via its American Express-branded credit cards.

IAH is a United hub, with airline-branded lounges in four of the five terminals, including a Polaris Lounge in Terminal E. Terminal D at IAH features an Amex Centurion Lounge with access for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express .

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is a bit closer to the port (41 miles) but is served by fewer airlines. Look for flights on Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue, American and Delta. Southwest offers the opportunity to fly two-for-one with the Southwest Companion Pass .

Houston Hobby lacks luxury lounges, but does have a Gameway gaming lounge, with access available to Priority Pass members via a selection of credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

How to get to the Port of Galveston

carnival cruise with overnight stay

Cruisers have multiple options for getting to the Port of Galveston, including:

The port of Galveston is on a coastal barrier island south of the city of Houston. The main highway into Galveston is Interstate Highway 45. It is possible to arrive from the east using the Port Bolivar car ferry, but the potential for ferry delays often outweighs the extra driving time it takes to go around the bay to reach the I-45 bridge.

Car rentals between IAH or HOU and Galveston

Currently, only Enterprise offers rental drop-offs in Galveston. With one-way fees and fuel, a midsize car or SUV could cost $200 for an overnight rental. This option gains value if your travel group has plans for exploring a bit pre- or post-cruise. You'll still need transportation from the Enterprise facility to the port, a distance of roughly 3 1/2 miles.

Cruise line airport transfers

You can travel from either Houston airport to the Port of Galveston on embarkation day via transfers prepurchased from the cruise lines. These are usually offered to passengers who buy air through the cruise line, but even those who book independently can call to make the purchase.

Carnival has instructions online for booking transfers from Houston airports, including flight timing restrictions. The cost is currently $58.99 per person from IAH and $41.99 per person from HOU. Return transfers would be similarly priced.

Independent airport shuttles from Houston airports to the cruise port

Local companies operate shuttle services between both Houston airports and Galveston, either to the cruise port or to a Galveston hotel. Galveston Express has shared van rides starting at $40 per person each way.

Independent van/car services

Multiple companies offer private car service from the airports to either the pier or a Galveston hotel. SuperShuttle offers private car service to the port starting at $80 per person. Blacklane offers chauffeured car service, averaging around $200 from either airport to the port, for up to three people and two bags. A larger Mercedes van for up to five passengers will cost around $250.

Hotel shuttles

Roughly half of the hotels located in Galveston offer free shuttles to the cruise pier. Hotels outside of Galveston rarely provide shuttles to the port.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Getting from a Galveston hotel to the port via ride-hailing service, such as Uber or Lyft , is possible, but not always your best choice. Galveston is a relatively small island and when two or more ships are departing on the same day, extended wait times for pickups at your hotel can cause delays and surge pricing can make the trip more expensive than you anticipated.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are available at both Houston airports. Taxis are metered, with fares averaging $165 from IAH. For ride-hailing services, follow signs and use your apps for directions to pickup points. We checked a prebooked Uber from IAH and were shown a starting fare of $98.

Public transportation

Galveston does not offer public transportation to the cruise port. The Galveston Island Trolley has bus and rail lines that are ideal for traveling between pre- or post-cruise hotels and on-island attractions, but it stops short of the port.

Port of Galveston parking

carnival cruise with overnight stay

Galveston cruise passengers often drive to the port, so parking options abound. These include both official Port of Galveston parking and private lots. For guests not staying in a Galveston hotel, private parking lots are the cheapest option. If your plan includes a hotel stay and your hotel offers a parking package, it is almost guaranteed to be at a lower price than the lots closer to the port. Reservations made well in advance are recommended for all parking options.

On-site parking

Parking for terminals 25 and 28 is a bit spread out. Some lots have shuttle service, others are walking access only. The walk can be as far as two blocks. You can choose from covered and uncovered options, with prices ranging from $22 to $26.

Parking at the newer Royal Caribbean Terminal 10 includes shuttle services for all lots. All parking at Terminal 10 is uncovered. The price per day is $22 to $25.

Private parking facilities

Private parking options near the terminals include indoor and covered parking, all with shuttles. Some service only terminals 25 and 28, while others will also service Terminal 10. If the reservation form doesn't list your cruise ship or sailing date, it means that lot doesn't serve the terminal you need.

Prices are competitive and usually lower than official port parking. For example, Lighthouse Parking beats the terminal's official parking lots, offering covered parking for around $20 per day, with shuttle service to all terminals.

Some, like Galveston Park N Cruise, offer discounts for prepaying. That lot only serves terminals 25 and 28 (Carnival and Princess) and does not provide a shuttle because it's across the street from the terminal. Prepaid rates for indoor parking are as low as $18.50 per day for a seven-night cruise.

Park-and-cruise

If you plan an overnight stay in Galveston, the cheapest parking option is a hotel with a parking package. Many Galveston hotels offer cruise parking to guests who stay either before or after a cruise. Some offer parking free of charge; most charge a fee for leaving your car behind. The best scenario is a hotel with both a parking option and a shuttle to the port.

Hotels near the Galveston cruise port

carnival cruise with overnight stay

Hotels are abundant in Galveston, all of them 10 miles or less from the port. Because this is both a small port town and a vacation destination, rates and room availability fluctuate widely. Whether you need a one-night stay as close as possible to the port or are looking for a longer stay to fully explore this charming beach town, here are some of the many choices to consider.

Hilton hotels near the Port of Galveston

For a quick overnight before your cruise, the DoubleTree is a good choice (32,000 to 168,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It has a pool and free Wi-Fi and is across the street from the beach. It also offers parking package options.

For a more resort-style stay, consider the Hilton Galveston Island Resort (32,000 to 338,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It's within walking distance of the beach and offers parking and shuttle packages.

Marriott hotels near the Port of Galveston

For an affordable stay with beach access, check out the Courtyard Galveston Island (30,000 to 59,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). You can dine at its on-site restaurant or venture out — either by foot or via the island's trolley — to sample the island's renowned seafood. Wi-Fi is free for Bonvoy members.

The Grand Galvez, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, is the city's signature hotel. First opened in 1911 as the Hotel Galvez, it is the only historic beachfront hotel on the entire Texas coast. A stay here (from 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night) is a grand way to start a cruise vacation.

For a hotel even closer to the pier and the city's famed downtown strand, the Tremont House is a luxury option from the Tribute Portfolio (from 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). Its Blum & Co. bistro and wine bar is open all day and well into the evening for those arriving from late flights into Houston. The hotel has park-and-sail packages as well as transportation to the terminal.

Hyatt hotels near the Port of Galveston

The nearest Hyatt is the Hyatt Regency Baytown, a Category 3 hotel (from 9,000 World of Hyatt points per night). It's an hour's drive from the port, situated not far from Space Center Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk, if those are on your to-do list pre- or post-cruise.

Related: Why the World of Hyatt card is one of the best credit cards

Non-points hotels near the Port of Galveston

A stay at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center is a whopper of a family-friendly choice. Besides the aquarium, rainforest and discovery museum on-site, the property boasts a beachy water park and lazy river, and a paddlewheel boat offering dinner cruises. The hotel offers cruise parking and a cruise shuttle for a fee.

Leaving the kids behind? The San Luis Resort, Spa and Conference Center is family-friendly, but its lack of attractions for children (other than a pool) means fewer children will likely be on the property. That makes it ideal for a couples or singles escape. The resort has ocean-view rooms and suites, four restaurants and a luxury spa to kick off (or finish off) your cruise.

Restaurants near Galveston cruise port

The food scene in Galveston includes everything from baskets of fish and chips done Texas style (which means it's probably wrapped in bacon and served with jalapenos) to elegant chop houses and seafood establishments. Choices line Seawall Boulevard and extend to the Strand Historic District and the Pier 21 tourist area.

Seafood is the predominant option, but it's also possible to sample barbecue and Tex-Mex.

Things to do in and around Galveston before or after your cruise

carnival cruise with overnight stay

The beach is the No. 1 reason people visit Galveston. It stretches for 32 miles (more than 10 miles protected by a seawall and promenade) and is dotted with fishing piers, overwater souvenir shops and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park. The best part is that almost anything you need in Galveston is across the street from the beach, including most of the hotels and restaurants.

The bar scene along the seawall has plenty to offer, from rooftop outdoor seating at Pelican and the Shark at the 61st Street Fishing Pier to the famous Poop Deck facing the beach. The Strand has its own concentration of bars, from classy wine bars to genuine dive bars.

Beyond the beach, look for a Texas original water park — Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens. Kids and adults both can delight in the three Moody Gardens pyramids. One's an aquarium featuring penguins, seals and a coral reef lab. Another is a rainforest, home to over 1,700 exotic plants and endangered animals, including free-roaming sloths and birds that fly between the trees as you walk the trails below the canopy. The third pyramid is a discovery museum with rotating exhibits. Expect animal encounters and hands-on "edutainment" at all three.

Shopping near the Port of Galveston

For last-minute cruise clothes, swing by the Tanger Outlets on I-45, approximately 20 miles north of Galveston in Texas City. As luck would have it, there's a Buc-ees right next door. Besides the clean bathrooms, you'll find Texas souvenirs, out-of-the-ordinary snacks, drinks and even decent barbecue packed into a supersize gas station and roadside palooza.

You won't have trouble finding Galveston's Walmart and Target if you're looking to purchase last-minute snacks, sundries, bottled water, soda or wine to carry on board ( where allowed ).

Hot spots for beachwear, hats, sunglasses and souvenirs specific to Galveston are Dolphin World and the Mermaid Pier.

Is it a contract thing?

I think its because there is no place else to go besides there and it could be money issue bermuda wants tourism so maybe something to do with a contract between them and cruise lines...and then there are people who don't want a 7 night cruise with just one port day, as for me, I always wonder why cruise lines don't have a Bermuda cruise from Pt. Canaveral as it is only 200 more miles to Bermuda than NY is.

Tapi

No other place to go on a 7 night cruise from the US mainland so the ship stays there multiple nights.

I have seen Bermuda as a day port of call on repositioning cruises

Just for kicks I did some looking and found a few. from 7 to 11 days.

here is one on MSC

Sat Apr 11 Miami, FL 6:00pm

Sun Apr 12 Nassau, Bahamas 7:00am 3:00pm

Mon Apr 13 At Sea

Tue Apr 14 King's Wharf, Bermuda 10:00am

Wed Apr 15 King's Wharf, Bermuda

Thu Apr 16 King's Wharf, Bermuda 7:00am

Fri Apr 17 At Sea

Sat Apr 18 Miami, FL 8:00am

I am not sure what their reason is, and it could be any of the above reasons including contractual, but Bermuda is one of those places that cannot be properly be appreciated in one day IMO.

Bases5 I was just thinking of 7 night cruises, definitely on longer cruises they do go for the day thanks for bringing that point up.

I don't like spending the night in port (I have done that two years ago) and EVERYTHING on the ship is closed and so was the casino its boring. Not much nightlife either to get to in Bermuda pretty much quiet as a mouse at night time.

unless I miss read your post the example I posted was a 7 night cruise.

or are you just talking about a day stop on a 7 day cruise?

That's why I want too do the Bermuda cruise, stay over night.

we did the Bermuda cruise...2 3/4 days in one port. I'd do it again in a hot minute. absolutely loved Bermuda itself, and the fun of seeing a port of call in a much less frantic and nerve-wracking always-checking-your-watch way. loved it.

Bases5 was talking about a day stop in 7 night cruise thanks.

I think for me I go on a cruise to be at sea but if I want to see a place I just do land vacations.

My upcoming cruise on the Valor in May docks in Aruba always wanted to go there so we also booked 8 night land vacation in Aruba. :D I do have to tell you cruises are so economical...my balcony cabin is 2100 for two of us where our Aruba airfare cost 1600 for two tickets, hotel will cost 3200 and then there is food very expensive...so I guess a cruise staying a few nights in Bermuda is best.

NYcruzzer

Ships that overnight in Bermuda are allowed to open their Casino 9:00 PM to 5:00 am

It's been that way since last year. Additionally Royal does a 9 night R/T from NJ that overnights in Bermuda before heading to the Carribean islands.

Thats great news when I went they were still in the voting stage glad to hear it was approved! (NCL Breakway 2013)

Yeah it was great being able to go to the casino after dinner both nights we were docked in Bermuda last year.

bassmaster150

Bermuda is kind of in the middle of nowhere, so if they were going to stop anywhere else, it would probably be a 7 day cruise with only two stops

beanies098

Way back on my very first Bermuda cruise, they stopped at a couple different ports on the island, but it was kind of silly. The island is so small and very easy to get around. A lot of people on the cruise complained about being required to get back on the ship only to go an incredibly short distance. I imagine passengers have much more flexibility in seeing the island with the overnight stay.

Years ago yes they did Hamilton and St. Georges!

This year HAL will have 7 night cruises from Boston docking 3 nights in Hamilton. This is something only "small" ships can accomplish. Three days is not enough time to see and do everything. I usually get a 3 day unlimited transportation pass. Good for all the ferries and buses. One day I take ferry to St Georges , one day a bus to the aquarium, then another to Horseshoe Beach. Other trips I've rented a motor boat and explored some of the smaller beaches. Bermuda is one of the cleanest and prettiest islands I wish Carnival sailed there more often.

How choppy are the waves getting there? What is the best month to go?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Forums mobile app

Seas can be choppy or smooth anytime of the year

Historically the months with the smoothest seas are May, June , and July

wow. thats a lot of money. I am wondering if you were doing an AI.

We rented a one bedroom from an owner at PlayaLinday for 1100 for a week. We live in PHL but traveled to BWI where flights were 1000 cheaper for 3-- airfare for 3 was 1,000 and our food budget for 3 was 1000.

I wish the cruise lines would offer more overnighters in ports.OUr next cruise has a 2 day stay in Honnolulu and a 2 day stay in M:)auai

serene56 no not doing an AI only because Aruba has such wonderful fine dining restaurants I need and want to try. Yemanji, Carte Blanch, Chefs Table, Screaming Eagle, Passions, Madam Janette, Suisse Chalet, Daniels Steak & Chop and Matthews....those are the ones I am planning on eating at but there are so many others I want to try so I had to take some off the list lol. What time of the year did you go? We are going in July basically because my niece is a school teacher and is off during summer months. My brother and sister in law live in NY their airfare is cheaper by $200 p/p and I live in Florida and mine is higher go figure that lol. You had a good airfare there.

We had to choose Marriott Resort and Stellaris hotel because my brother and sister in law along with their adult girls will be staying next door at the Marriot Ocean Club (Marriott time share) just like you did but different place. I do know food will cost us $300 plus a day then add the drinks. :roll eyes:

dhill, if you don't use the casino or want it I don't blame you for wanting more nights in port, as for me, we usually choose the cruises with the most time at sea.

Wonder why Bermuda Cruises do so many overnights just look at a world map.

It is out in the Atlantic all by itself.

That also makes it so unique . Nothing like the Caribbean Islands .

Nobody selling you beads on the beach . A fairly wealthy population .

If you should hit occasional ruff seas crossing the Gulf Stream getting there , you will appreciate the longer stay before the return trip.

Been cruising for many years and Bermuda still remains a favorite cruise of ours on the cruise lines like NCL & X that spend several nights there.

I can see why since there is no place close by to go to. The only time we've been there was a stop on a transatlantic and we did not stay overnight.

Breaking news, inside carnival’s cheapest $90-a-day, windowless cabin on its firenze ship.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

An Italian-themed Carnival Cruise ship offers the line’s discount-rated cheapest rooms — but you’ll have to sacrifice having a view.

The four-year-old Firenze, anchored in Long Beach, California has 44, tiny “interior” cabins with no windows nor balcony that can cost about $90 per night, according to reports.

A deal with Costco advertises trips on the four-year-old 4,000-plus capacity ship can go for even cheaper at $564, taxes included. Business Insider reported that it can cost $360 apiece, or about $90 a day.

The Firenze cruise ship was panned for having some cramped quarters.

Other than having some cost-efficiency, a vacation onboard the Firenze doesn’t exactly feel like you’ve seas-ed the day, according to one review.

“It might’ve been the ugliest cabin I’ve ever stayed in,” Business Insider’s Brittany Chang bluntly wrote of her cramped quarters over four nights to Ensenada, Mexico with a stop at Catalina Island in California.

carnival cruise with overnight stay

It was about 150 feet in total space.

The ship doesn’t have any alternative solo cabins beyond the accessible, according to ThePointsGuy .

Aside from the cheap cost, the room was torn for looking “quadruple” its young age from dates furniture. The bathroom was also compared to a gas station’s.

“Did it feel more like a hospital room than a floating hotel room? Yes,” Business Insider reported.

However, some redeeming qualities were reported as well.

“It’s chaotic and a lot to take in, but somehow it works,” according to a review Ashley Kosciolek wrote for ThePointsGuy.

The small room is less than 200 feet.

“Passengers can have their photos taken with a Vespa-style scooter and grab Italian-themed burgers and meatball sandwiches at new iterations of some of Carnival’s most popular eateries.”

Trivia, movies, and games were noted for creating a lively atmosphere — as were the spa, waterslides, ropes course, and gym.

One reviewer said the bathroom evoked that of a gas station's facilities.

Still, it was panned for feeling too crowded on a trip well below full capacity.

An American adaptation of Italian culture — the ship is named for Florence after all — is also present just about anywhere you go. Photos evoke a similar sensation to walking around The Venetian in Las Vegas.

“The Italian vibe carries through everything you do on board,” she added. “It will either make you smile or roll your eyes. Regardless, it’s a lot of fun.”

Carnival Cruise Ship Catches Fire for Second Time in 2 Years After Passengers Report Lightning Strike

The incident marks the second time in two years this particular ship has caught fire. It has caused the cancellation of two upcoming voyages

A Carnival cruise ship’s exhaust funnel caught fire on Saturday during a trip to the Bahamas, causing the company to cancel its next two voyages.

This is the second time in less than two years that the Carnival Freedom, based in Port Canaveral, Fla., has been impacted by a fire.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations, told Florida Today in a statement. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

PEOPLE has reached out to Carnival, but did not immediately hear back.

While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Carnival noted in a post on X Saturday that eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike.

One of the cruise’s passengers, Heath Barnes, posted footage of the incident on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

In a statement to TMX, Barnes said it had been storming on and off and he was on one of the ship’s upper decks when he experienced “the loudest thunder and lightening [sic] I have ever heard.”

After he returned to his cabin for about 15 minutes, his nephew and two friends came to tell him the ship was on fire.

“I thought they were giving me a hard time but I got up and went out on the balcony and sure enough the flames and smoke was pouring out of the tail,” he continued, adding that he took the videos from his balcony before travelers were asked to stay indoors.

Carnival's brand ambassador John Heald addressed the incident on Facebook, acknowledging that those impacted by the cancellations “will be feeling very disappointed.”

“And I want to add my apologies and my assurances that when you rebook using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the Fun you deserve,” he added.

In May 2022, the Carnival Freedom caught fire during a five-day cruise to Turks and Caicos.

At the time, Carnival Cruise Line verified that a fire broke out in the funnel of the ship while it was in Grand Turk.

The company said its "emergency response team quickly activated and extinguished" the flames.

"All guests and crew are safe, and the ship's guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore," Carnival added.

The 948-foot Carnival Freedom, built in 2007, can hold just over 3,500 passengers, according to Cruise Mapper .
