japan tours november

  • Monday to Friday 8:30AM - 5:30PM (PST) Saturday 9:00AM - 3:00PM (PST)

November is, next to the cherry blossom months of March and April, one of the most breathtaking times to plan a trip to Japan. Seasonal trees everywhere across the country change the bright greens of summer for bolder fall colors of red, orange, and gold. The maple, ginkgo, rowan, and zelkova are some of Japan’s most common leaf-changing trees, and November is the month they are at their fullest autumn colors for most of Japan. The average weather is perfect for a walking tour of Japan, and while the top hiking and pilgrimage routes in the country are good most of the year, the autumn leaves make the historic footpaths, temple treks and hiking paths into a golden autumn dream. The Nakasendo Road is a historic road established to connect Tokyo with Kyoto, and a walk down this heritage path takes you back to the Edo period as you pass through charming little post towns like Tsumago and Magome on your way through the Kiso Valley. The famed Kumano Kodo is unforgettable in November, as you trek from temple to magnificent temple around mountains and over bridges through stunning forest scenery. Or take a route through the southern island of Shikoku to the temple complex at Mount Koya-san. A sacred site to the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, Koya-san is absolutely splendid in autumn, and offers travelers the chance to live a day as a Buddhist monk, including traditional monk’s food and an overnight stay at a “shukubo”, or temple lodging. Be sure to plan sightseeing stops at Japan’s top travel destinations during your November tour. The contemporary sights of Tokyo – Shinjuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, and more are extra charming covered in autumn leaves. The ancient city of Kyoto, it’s temples, shrines, and historical districts captivate travelers with its golden autumn glow, and the Hakone/Mount Fuji region is a definite must for any traveler to Japan in November.

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 514 REVIEWS

We gained great appreciation for the culture and history of Japan through the sites we visited. The transportation was comfortable and convenient, and our guide, Trend, was outstanding, knowledgeable and entertaining. The accommodations were terrific, and it was so convenient to have two meals included each day. We enjoyed every aspect of the tour and we'd highly recommend it to others!

This tour was amazing with everything so well organized. The transportation was comfortable, accommodation was great (pretty much got 4-star hotels) and all the important touristy places were covered. It'd be hard for anyone to do the same itinerary on their own for sure. My fav. aspect of the tour is that it was not rushed and had ample time at each of the spots making it more enjoyable. Most importantly, our guide TREND was brilliant. She did an excellent job in taking care of the group, keeping it entertaining and educative. She always ensured we were all comfortable everywhere and especially in the restaurants where the menu was hard to understand given I had dietary restrictions leaving few choices. I'd recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for the highlights of Japan.

We had a wonderful tour.

We had a trip of a lifetime! Our guide Joyce and driver, Yokomi-san were very professional and timely. We will miss them! They were very friendly and ensured our children (11 and 14) had an incredible experience! Joyce was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information about the sites we were seeing, made sure we had our tickets and did not lose anyone. We had plenty of time at each attraction to walk around, get snacks and use facilities - we never felt rushed or that we were wasting time. Sadly, there was too many clouds at Hakone to see anything. We had spent a lot of time riding to get there and saw nothing, so we ate the black egg and took photos, which was still memorable. The onsen hotel is the most beautiful hotel ever! We enjoyed using the family onsen and the kaiseki dinner.

Trend was an exceptional tour host! She was attentive to every traveler and gave us such helpful information, both historical and cultural.

Visiting Japan in November: The Ultimate Guide

Visiting Japan in November: The Ultimate Guide

Table of Contents

November is an excellent time of year to visit Japan. There are fewer crowds, the autumn colours are at their peak and the temperature is ideal for exploring. I spent the entire month of November travelling around Japan. It was the perfect time of year to visit.

In this post, I’ve shared everything you need to know about visiting Japan in November. This includes the weather in November, what to pack for your November trip to Japan and the best places to visit.

Read next: all you need to know about a solo trip to Japan

Japan weather in November

When it comes to the weather, November is a great month to visit Japan. The temperatures are moderate, there are often clear skies and the beautiful fall foliage (Momiji) has begun. With both the typhoon season and the rainy season officially over, November is also one of the driest months in Japan.

The weather in Japan in November can be very diverse. Japan is a large country and the weather conditions vary.

The popular tourist areas in Honshu which include Tokyo and Kyoto can still see mild temperatures in November. For my first week in Japan, I only had to wear a t-shirt. By mid-November and late November, the temperatures were much cooler and a warm jacket was needed. Snow is unlikely in the Honshu area before early December, although there was a light dusting while I was in Kyoto.

In Northern Japan , the area of Hokkaido is much cooler and it’s the start of the winter months. In fact, it’s not uncommon for there to be snow in November. The average temperature for the city of Sapporo (Hokkaido) in November is 5.2°C (41 F) compared to 12.5°C (54.5 F) in Tokyo (Honshu). The autumn colours can start a few weeks earlier in Hokkaido.

If you’re heading down to the southern tropical-like beaches of Okinawa , the weather tends to stay very mild, but still bearable.

Temperatures will vary depending on where you plan to visit in Japan, but one thing that tends to stay consistent around the country is the clear skies and minimal rain.

I was in Japan for almost four weeks and only had a couple of days of rain in November. The clear skies also make it an excellent time to see the iconic Mount Fuji .

Is Japan crowded in November?

November is a busy time of year in Japan. The temperatures are cooler, the beautiful autumn foliage is at its peak and accommodation tends to be a little cheaper.

While this does attract the crowds, it’s worth noting that November can still be a lot quieter than other months, especially compared to the Cherry Blossom Season . I found the crowds in the major cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo overwhelming at times. But they certainly weren’t at their busiest.

Japan is a beautiful country and often, tourists focus on the same few destinations. If you want to escape the crowds in Japan, consider going off the beaten path.

Despite there being fewer crowds, November can still be busy so it’s a good idea to book your accommodation and activities ahead of time. I found budget accommodation in the major cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto had sold out a few weeks ahead of my visit in November.

I find Klook the best option for booking activities and rail passes in Japan. I booked everything through this website and had no issues at all.

Best places in Japan to visit in November

Japan is full of epic must-visit destinations all year round but there are a few which shine during the month of November.

If you’re planning a trip to Japan in November, here are some of the top destinations to include on your Japan itinerary.

Hakone is an easy day trip from Tokyo as well as the perfect place to spend a few days relaxing. It’s known for stunning mountain scenery, views of Mount Fuji and for being one of the best places to experience an Onsen (hot springs).

Hakone Sightseeing Cruise by Pirate Ship

November is one of the best times of year to visit Hakone. With clear skies and minimal rain, Mount Fuji is often visible from spots around the area. It’s also an epic destination for the famous Momiji (autumn colours).

If you’re visiting Hakone from Tokyo, consider getting the Hakone Free Pass . This includes your journey to Hakone and transport around the area such as the famous Lake Ashi Sightseeing Cruise.

Planning a trip to Hakone? Check out my Hakone guide and itinerary .

Fuji Fives Lakes

The Fuji Fives Lakes area is another must-see spot in November. The autumn colours light up the area and make a beautiful frame for the iconic Mount Fuji.

Lake Kawaguchi is an absolute must visit while in the Fives Lake area. It’s home to the famous “Momiji Kairou” or Maples Corridor, a stunning display of autumn colours. The best time to see this incredibly display is from late October to mid-November.

It’s also a popular place for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.

The Mishima Skywalk is one of the best places to see the incredible Mount Fuji.

The city of Nikko and the surrounding area is a great destination in November. The area lights up with autumn colours and there is plenty to see and do. The Ryuzu Waterfall , Lake Chuzenji and the Shoyoen Garden are all popular spots to see the colours of fall. In fact, many people say that Nikko is one of the best places in Japan to see the autumn colours.

It’s possible to visit Nikko as a day trip from Tokyo as I did, but it’s better to stay overnight if you can. The areas with the best autumn colours are out of the main city so you want to give yourself time to visit them.

Tobu Railway offer the Nikko World Heritage Pass which is worth buying if you’re visiting Nikko from Tokyo. It includes return transport and transport around the area itself.

The Kansai Area (Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima)

The month of November is the perfect time to visit the famous Kansai region of Japan. This includes popular spots such as Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji and Hiroshima .

Hirsoshima Atomic Dome

Kyoto is especially beautiful in November. There’s no place quite like Kyoto. Walking through Kyoto’s Southern Higashiyama Ward offers an incredible insight into Japan’s history and ancient traditions. It’s an absolute must-do on any visit to Japan whenever you visit.

For autumn colours near Kyoto, consider visiting the nearby Nara . Nara is known for its wild deer who often bow to receive food, but Nara Park is also an epic spot to see the autumn foliage.

Arashiyama is a scenic mountain area just outside of Kyoto. It’s an absolutely stunning area, but autumn is an especially beautiful time to visit. For a ride through the golden colours, consider a journey on the Sagano Romantic Train.

Minoo Park is another great spot to visit during November. It’s an easy day trip from Osaka and boasts incredible autumn colours as its Maple Trees turn red, especially around Minoo Falls.

While in the Kansai region, be sure to visit the famous Himeji Castle , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There were no crowds whatsoever on the day I visited in November. In the Spring, Himeji is a great spot for the Cherry Blossoms.

If you’re travelling around the Kansai Region, consider purchasing the Japan Rail Kansai Pass . This saved me a lot of money during my trip.

Minoo Park is a great day trip from Osaka

Tokyo is known for its long and humid summer days. By November, the weather is much more bearable making it a great time to visit Japan’s capital city.

For a chance at seeing the autumn foliage in Tokyo, visit Yoyogi Park , one of the city’s biggest green spaces. Another epic spots in Tokyo to witness the reds, oranges and golds of autumn is the Meiji Jingu Gaien and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden .

A short day trip from Tokyo is the iconic Mount Takao which boasts some of the best autumn colours in Japan. It’s also home to the Autumn Leaves Festival held in November. It can get very crowded here so avoid weekends if possible.

If you want to explore the white beaches of Japan without the scorching heat, consider visiting Okinawa in the south of Japan.

This beach destination boasts incredible white sand beaches and crystal clear waters. While you won’t get to see the autumn foliage, you will be able to relax on the beach without overheating. It’s sometimes still possible to swim in the ocean during November.

Visiting Japan in November means clear skies

November events and festivals in Japan

November sees a variety of festivals and cultural events take place all over Japan. The below is a few highlights to consider when planning your Japan itinerary.

One of Japan’s most important Sumo matches happens in November. The Sumo match takes place in the city of Fukuoka . You’ll need to be lucky to grab tickets to this famous Grand Tournament .

Winter illuminations

Japan loves to put on a show and November is no exception. November often sees the start of many of the winter illumination festivals and shows. These famous light illuminations take place all over the country.

One of the most famous winter illuminations in Japan takes place in Kobe . It’s known as ‘Luminaire’ and is an Italian-inspired light show. Another popular winter illumination is the Rikugien Garden Autumn Illumination . This can be found in Japan’s capital, Tokyo.

teamLabs in Tokyo

Cultural events

With festivals and cultural events throughout the year, Japan is one of the world’s culture capitals. November sees several cultural events take place.

In Kyoto , you’ll find the Gion Odori , where you can find traditional dance and music in the Gion area. Over in Miyajima , there’s the famous Fire Walking Ceremony at Daiganji Temple. This unique event sees brave priests and visitors walk across scorching hot coal in bare feet.

‘Culture Day’ is also celebrated across the country on November 3 rd . The day is a public holiday and with the aim of promoting the arts and culture. ‘Labour Thanksgiving Day’ is another famous public holiday which takes place in November across the country.

Autumn leaves festivals

With the red, gold and orange colours of autumn at their best, November sees various festivals to celebrate this incredible wonder of nature.

One of the best autumn festivals is the Fuji Kawaguchi Autumn Leaves Festival . The shores of Lake Kawaguchi are one of the best places in Japan to see the autumn colours including the famous “Momiji” tunnel .

Mount Takao is another great Autumn Leaves Festival.

Autumn Foliage in Japan during November

What to wear in Japan in November

Packing for Japan in November isn’t the easiest of tasks. The weather is changing and it’s hard to predict at what point the mild temperatures end and the cooler begins.

What you pack for your trip to Japan also depends on where you plan to visit. For those heading to Northern Japan ( Hokkaido ), you’ll want warmer clothes . If you’re heading to Okinawa , you’ll likely find clothes for warmer weather sufficient. For visitors to Honshu (Tokyo’s main tourist area), you’ll need both clothes for warmer and colder weather .

Ultimately, layers are the simple solution when it comes to packing for Japan in November.

Here are some essential packing items for those visiting Japan in November and heading to the popular areas of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka:

  • Long-sleeved shirt or top : make sure to take a couple of warmer base layers such as a long-sleeve top.
  • Light jacket : you can use this in cooler weather to layer. Even in early November, you might find the weather is cool in the evening so taking a light or down jacket is a sensible idea.
  • Fleece or warmer jumper/sweaters : pack at least two warm and cosy layers such as a fleece or fluffy sweatshirt. This will help to keep you warm and allow you to layer.
  • Rain jacket : despite being one of the driest months in Japan, November can still see rain. Pack a waterproof rain jacket in case you get stuck in a storm.
  • T-shirts : November can still be a warm month in Japan, especially earlier in the month. Have several t-shirts to wear during the day.
  • Skirt or dress : while I was in Tokyo in early November, the daytime temperatures reached 25°C and it was still quite humid. Have a couple of options for those potential warmer days (if you’re visiting in late November, don’t worry about this).
  • Comfy shoes : whatever the time of year you visit Japan, it’s essential to pack comfortable shoes you can walk long distances in. I’m not sure I’ve ever walked as much around cities as I did in Japan.
  • Swimwear : November is the perfect time to relax in an Onsen (hot springs), remember to pack swimwear.

If you’re visiting Japan at the end of November and into December, you might find a winter coat is necessary. Otherwise, I’d focus on layers to make your packing as easy as possible.

Mount Fuji View From Mishima Skywalk

Summary: Is November a good time to visit Japan?

Yes! November is a great time to visit Japan. In fact, I would argue it’s one of the best times of year to visit this incredible country.

I loved my trip to Japan in November. The temperature was perfect for exploring, the autumn colours were incredible and the crowds were bearable (aside from a couple of the very popular spots).

Brilliant blue skies and vibrant colors

For most of Japan, November brings brisk air, clear skies, and radiant autumn foliage, making it a pleasant month to travel. The weather does gradually become chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings, but a hot spring excursion is a simple remedy for any cold spells you may encounter. Keep an eye out for Christmas lights and illumination events—many of which also begin in November.

Know Before You Go

  • November weather ranges from cool to chilly making sweaters a hot commodity
  • Kyoto can be particularly busy at the end of November when the leaves are at their peak
  • Temples and shrines in urban areas often have splendid gardens—ideal for effortless autumn leaf viewing

Autumn colors around Japan

The Japanese words momiji and koyo refer to red and yellow leaves, the star attraction of the autumn season. Mountain and lakeside areas are popular destinations, but you can enjoy the colors practically anywhere. Most shrines and temples have attractive grounds with their fair share of maple trees.

Learn more about Japan

Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

Visit ancient temples and walk history-laden pilgrim routes on our 8 day Koya-san & Kumano Trek.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on a 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan.

Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore' which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order.

Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.

Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras.

Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travellers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colourful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.

Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.

Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.

Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.

Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile while in Japan?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your mobile phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

March, April and May are excellent months to holiday in Japan and, as a result, are the busiest. The weather is usually fine and beautiful cherry blossoms are in full bloom. September, October and November are also great months to visit Japan on holidays, as the days are warm but not humid and the autumn colours are out. Winter, while cold, offers great conditions for skiing, snowboarding, going to snow festivals and admiring the stunning mountain scenery. The summer months can be quite humid, but tourist areas are generally quieter and there are many fun festivals and fireworks displays to enjoy.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 10 to 20°C, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 21 to 32°C depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Autumn (September to November): temperatures range from 7 to 20°C. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 0 to 15°C. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travellers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

LGBTQIA+ travellers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalised yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travellers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make travelling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travellers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Japan Travel & Culture Guide

Yoyogi Park in Fall, Tokyo

13-Day Japan Itinerary – November

When it comes to visiting somewhere else in Asia in November , Japan is hard to beat. Honshu , the largest island of Japan is where you will be traveling around at this time of year.

This suggested itinerary is crafted with many interesting places and landmarks that are located across Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Takayama, Gifu, Kanazawa, Nagoya, Tokyo, Kamakura, and Hakone . These places also include the best autumn colors spots to visit in November .

If you are planning an upcoming trip to Japan and don’t know really where to start, I am going to tell you exactly what you need to do. This suggested itinerary helps you organize your entire Japan trip with sharing useful info on the things to do and see, foods to eat, places to stay, ways to save money, and more.

Kofukuji temple in Nara, Japan

Indeed, the above destinations along with other well known attractions situated throughout the country are considered tourist magnet. One of the top reasons why November should be your ideal place to visit Japan is you can experience impressive fall colors vistas.

Please note on Honshu Island, autumn leaves can be seen from mid-October through early-December .

One interesting point about this itinerary is that you can easily modify this the way you want it. Let me show you my ultimate travel guides through this travel plan. I hope you will have a fantastic a 13-day trip (almost a 2 week holiday) in Japan this November.

Day 1: Osaka

Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan

Welcome to Japan!

Yeah you are supposed to start off your trip from Osaka . Hop on a JR airport rapid train to get to Osaka Station from Kansai International Airport . The one way ride takes about 70 minutes.

You can purchase your 1-day Amazing Osaka Pass from the Osaka Visitor Centre outside JR Osaka Station. It costs 2,500 Yen. The pass allows you unlimited rides on buses, and trains. Entry to Osaka Museum of History, Osaka Castle, Umeda Sky Building, and other sightseeing spots are fully covered by the pass.

You can also use this as sightseeing spots for free facility I suggest you to buy only “One day Osaka Amazing Pass.” For more info click here .

No matter what time you land at Kansai International Airport, you will be staying at this hotel in Umeda area , located quite close to Osaka Station.

If you will land at the airport before your lunch time, you can spend some time roaming around the city in the evening. On the other hand, if you reach Osaka in the evening, there is no need to go for sightseeing.

Sleep tight!

Hotel to Stay in Osaka: Hilton Hotel Osaka .

Day 2: A Day in Osaka

Osaka Castle in Osaka City, Japan

Places of Interest: Shitennoji Temple, Osaka Castle Museum, Nishinomaru Garden, Osaka Museum of History, Midosuji Avenue and Umeda Sky Building.

The day has arrived to use the Osaka Amazing Pass . It does save you some money!

Admissions to the above attractions (except Midosoji and Dotonbori) are fully covered by the pass including the subway.

A visit to Shitennoji in the morning will be just a great experience. Founded in 593 by the Prince Shotoku, Shitennoji is a stunning Buddhist temple and the best way to spend your time here is to take a walk around its complex and in the Gokuraku-jodo garden .

japan tours november

Next destination is Osaka Castle Park . With garden, walking trails, museum, and the castle tower, this park is one of the city’s most popular attractions for tourists.

In search of some interesting exhibit, you should get to Osaka Museum of History . Admission to the museum is free if you have the pass.

HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel in Osaka

Walk along the Midosuji Street as it’s packed with many shops, restaurants and cafes there. One of my favorite places to wonder in Osaka is Umeda Sky Building .

This 173 meter tall building consists of two distinct towers that are connected with the “Floating Garden Observatory” on the 39th floor. The observatory offers bird’s-eye view of Osaka city.

If you are not tired, visit HEP FIVE , one of Osaka’s major shopping malls where visitors can spend time on shopping and dining.

The shopping complex is actually known for its Ferris Wheel , attached to its roof. The ride will be quite relaxing for you at night and admission is included in Amazing Osaka Pass.

Let’s call it a day!

Day 3: A Day trip to Nara from Osaka

Todaiji Temple, Nara Park in Japan

Osaka Station -> Nara Station -> Osaka Station

For day three, interesting places to visit are Nara Park, Kofukuji Temple, Nara National Museum, Todaiji Temple, Kasuga Taisha, Isuien Garden, and Yoshikien Garden . Nara Park itself is spacious area in Nara city and famous for its temples, and deer.

There is no need to stay a night in Nara as it’s located about 28 kilometers east of Osaka. You will enjoy a day trip there, that’s your today’s plan. After the end of the trip you head back to Osaka.

Since you will stay nearby Osaka Station, it would be best if you reach Nara by JR Yamatoji rapid trains. The one way trip to Nara Station from Osaka Station takes about 45-50 minutes, and costs 800 yen.

Instead of taking a bus, I would like you to take a walk to Nara Park from the station. It usually takes 20 minutes. You will definitely enjoy the walk!

Nara Park in Autumn, Japan

Once you reach there, you take a look at the map and decided which attractions and landmarks you should be visiting first. Would it be the Nara National Museum or Todaiji? Decide yourself!

There is nothing much to say about Nara’s main attractions as everything you see and find there are worth exploring. Enjoy a leisurely walk into the park, feed the deer , and learn the history and traditions of those famous attractions to make your day a great adventure.

After the end of Nara expedition, head back to Osaka Station by train. Have some rest and take a shower before leaving for Dotonbori .

Visiting Dotonbori in the evening till late night is a must thing to do if you are looking for some ideas on where to spend your time in Osaka at night.

The area is very lively with lots of crowds, and most of them actually go there to taste the foods of different kinds that Osaka has to offer you.

Goodnight! Sleep well.

Day 4: Osaka to Kyoto

Torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto

Places of Interest: Toji Temple, Fushimi Inari Shrine, Tofukuji, Higashiyama district, and Kiyomizudera .

There are two ways you can get to Kyoto Station, they are as follows:

1) Osaka Station -> Shin-Osaka Station -> Kyoto Station

2) Osaka Station -> Kyoto Station

You will be staying at Kyoto Tower Hotel . The location of the property is adjacent to Kyoto Station and there are many restaurants and shops around.

If you think that getting to Kyoto Station from Osaka Station by JR Special rapid train on the JR Kyoto Line is convenient for you, then choose this route.

The one way trip takes about 30 minutes. Alternatively, you will have to hop on the JR Tokaido Shinkansen (Hikari and Kodama trains) from Shin-Osaka Station to Kyoto Station.

Toji Temple in Autumn, Kyoto

There are many coin lockers to storage your luggage at JR Kyoto Station . Do it right away, if you can’t manage to drop them off at the hotel you are going to stay overnight in Kyoto.

Contact with a support desk staff at the hotel to know whether they can hold the luggage for you before check in.

I am sure that you will find a smart solution, though, and these days most of the hotels actually provide such kind of service for their guests.

Buy a Kyoto City Bus All-day Pass to roam around the city. It costs only 500 yen for adult, and 250 yen for children.

This pass is valid for only one day with unlimited ride on the city buses to access Kyoto’s popular attractions. This page guides you how to take a bus in Kyoto.

Kyoto is famous for its iconic temples and shrines. Therefore let’s begin today’s sightseeing trip with a visit to Toji Temple . It’s situated a 15 minute walk southwest of Kyoto Station.

Enjoy a leisurely walk around its beautiful temple’s complex and discover its iconic Five Storied Pagoda, and the Kondo Hall.

Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto in Autumn

Then visit rest of the attractions one after another. Your trip to Kyoto in the fall is incomplete until you pay a visit to Tofukuji . Get there and see incredible fall foliage.

The temple is considered one of the best fall foliage spots in Kyoto . It’s always lovely to take a walk along the streets of Higashiyama District and it’s packed with cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

In the evening, you will be visiting one of Japan’s most popular Buddhist temples called Kiyomizudera (listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site). It has a large wooden stage, from where visitors can enjoy great views of maple leaves in autumn.

Day 5: Kyoto -> Arashiyama -> Kyoto

Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama in Autumn, Kyoto

Located in the western outskirts of Kyoto, Arashiyama is a perfect day trip destination from Kyoto city. From the picturesque temples, to the beautiful bamboo grove, there’s no other place like in western Kyoto.

Visiting Arashiyama in November can make you fall in love with its interesting landmarks. The good thing about Arashiyama is that it’s an easy day trip from Kyoto city by train.

Please note the one way trip to Saga-Arashiyama Station from Kyoto Station takes about 15 minutes and costs 240 yen.

Visitors, who come to Kyoto, usually don’t bother coming to Arashiyama and spending a lovely day discovering its main highlights.

japan tours november

Read this page to see how to spend a day in Arashiyama during autumn.

Whatever you intend to do and see in Arashiyama; just don’t forget to take a walk across the Togetsukyo Bridge . It looks pretty stunning in the sunshine!

Get back to Kyoto and enjoy your evening walking down the streets of Gion , a famous geisha district in Kyoto. This is not a mandatory activity for you, if you think you want to spend your time around Kyoto Station.

Tonight you pack your suitcase as you will say “Goodbye” to Kyoto City tomorrow.

Day 6: Kyoto to Takayama

Nijo Castle, Kyoto

Today you will go to Takayama, but before you hop on the train, I believe you should visit two must-see places in Kyoto, they are: Nijo Castle and Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) .

Start your morning by heading towards Kyoto Station. First destination for today is Kinkakuji temple. It’s best when you visit the temple in the morning. You hop on a bus either Kyoto City Bus number 205, or 101. The one way ride takes about 40 minutes and costs 230 yen.

After the expedition, head to Nijo Castle. The area of the castle is spacious and you should spend most of your time exploring its main highlights such as the Karamon Gate, Ninomaru Palace, Ninomaru Garden, and Honmaru.

Take the bus number 101 from Kinkakujimae bus stop to reach Nijo Castle.

Kinkakuji, Kyoto

Once you get back to your hotel room, check your all belongings, and get ready to check-out and make your way to Kyoto Station thereafter.

Here is the route: Kyoto Station -> Nagoya Station -> Takayama Station

At first, you will have to take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya, afterwards transfer to the JR Hida limited express train to reach Takayama. The one way ride from Kyoto Station to Takayama Station with a change at Nagoya Station takes about 3 hours.

For your overnight stay I highly recommend you this hotel . It’s just a short walk from Takayama Station.

If time permits, you can walk for a while nearby the station.

Day 7: Takayama to Shirakawa-go

Ogimachi village in Shirakawa-go, Japan

There are two interesting bus tours to Shirakawa-go provided by Nohi bus on daily basis. Join this bus tour and explore Ainokura and Ogimachi villages. This tour costs 6690 yen with lunch included and the bus departs everyday from Takayama Bus Terminal. Find more info here .

Next, you make your way to your hotel room and take a shower if you want to. Then I would like you to visit the Old town of Takayama . There, visitors like walking down the streets and taste some local foods from the cafes and restaurants.

If you are not interested in that bus tour, you can completely forget about it and plan on your own to explore Shirakawa-go and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa. Spend half a day in Shirakwa-go and half a day in Kanazawa .

I would not recommend you visit all the popular sightseeing spots of Kanazawa but the iconic Kenrokuen . This is one of the three most beautiful landscape gardens in Japan alongside Mito’s Kairakuen and Okayama’s Korakuen . Fall color here is stunningly breathtaking as ever.

If you have enough time to travel around the city, make your way over to Kanazawa Castle Park .

Check out the Bus timetable here .

Day 8: Takayama to Nagoya

Korankei Gorge Autumn Leaves, Japan

Takayama Station -> Nagoya Station

Good morning!

It’s time to head towards Nagoya City from Takayama . If you can, catch the early morning train to Nagoya Station. There are many coin lockers at the station, so finding an empty locker would not be a daunting task. Leave your luggage there and make your way to Meitetsu Nagoya Station .

Nagoya has one of Japan’s famous autumn leaves spot called Korankei Gorge . This is an incredible site to behold in autumn, especially in mid-November when the valley is ablaze with colors.

japan tours november

There are multiple ways to get to Korankei with at least one transfer involving trains and buses. Take a train from Meitetsu Nagoya Station on the Meitetsu Line and get off at Higashi-okazaki station.

From there, you will have to reach Korankei by Meitetsu bus. The one way bus ride to Korankei takes about an hour.

You can learn more about this popular fall foliage spot in this post .

Tonight you are going to stay a night at this hotel in Nagoya City.

Day 9: Nagoya to Tokyo

Shinjuku Gyoen in Autumn, Tokyo

Nagoya Station -> Tokyo Station -> Shinjuku Station

I always like staying in Shinjuku area in downtown Tokyo. It would be best if you could stay in a hotel that’s located adjacent to Shinjuku Station. You’d better stay the nights at Shinjuku Prince Hotel .

If you have a valid JR Pass, hop on a shinkansen (bullet train) either Hikari or Kodama at Nagoya Station. The one way journey takes about 110-120 minutes. Next, you transfer to Shinjuku Station by train (15 minutes) on the Chuo line.

You can visit some interesting landmarks right after you finish your lunch. You won’t go that much far, but around Shinjuku area including two beautiful fall foliage spots in Tokyo called Shinjuku Gyoen and Yoyogi Park .

Start your today’s sightseeing with a visit to Shinjuku Gyoen. You can take a walk from the hotel, spend two hours there viewing gorgeous maple leaves. After enjoying the garden, head over to Yoyogi Park.

At first, get to Yoyogi Station and take a train to Harajuku station (2 minutes’ ride). It’s a 5 minute walk from Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line.

If you think that visiting Meiji Shrine can make your trip awesome, visit it as it’s located next to Yoyogi Park. Marvel at the large torii gate there, it’s impressive!

Takeshita Dori in Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan

Wondering what to do next? Well, you can enjoy shopping along Takeshita Dori in Harajuku.

From Hakajuku Station you get to Shibuya Station. It’s a 2 minute train ride on the JR Yamanote Line. The ride is fully covered by Japan Rail Pass . You can have your dinner in Shibuya, but before doing that, please head over to Hachiko Statue , and experience the Shibuya Crossing .

Get back to your hotel room from by train from Shibuya Station to Shikjuku Station. Goodnight!

Day 10: A Day trip to Kamakura

Kamakura Daibutsu at Kotokuin Temple, Kamakura

Kamakura , one of the best side trip destinations from Tokyo, is a coastal town located south of Tokyo. With historic temples and shrines, Kamakura offers a number of easy hiking opportunities to enjoy the fall colors.

I have already shared a perfect one day Kamakura itinerary for those who want to visit the area in the fall. Check it out here .

Kamakura can be accessed directly from Shikjuku Station by train on the Shonan Shinjuku Line. Please note when coming from Tokyo, make sure you get off at Kita Kamakura Station if you are to start your trip with a visit to Engakuji temple .

Get back to Tokyo in the evening. Still want to roam round Shinjuku a little longer? Do it on your own then. Good luck to you guys!

Day 11: A Day Trip Hakone

Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji in Hakone

Today, you will be visiting Hakone , one of the best places to enjoy hot springs, and natural beauty in Japan. Before you take a day trip to Hakone, I want you to buy Hakone Free Pass .

It’s a discounted rail pass offered by Odakyu Railways. You can purchase it at Shinjuku Station, and costs you 5,140 yen.

Visitors to Hakone usually intend to experience a ride on the Hakone Tozan Train, the Hakone Open Air Museum, the Hakone Tozan Cablecar, Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani (Hell Veally), Hakone sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashinoko, the Hakone Checkpoint Museum, the Ancient Cedar Avenue, and Hakone Shrine.

A day trip to Hakone can give you once-in-a-life time experience as you can see the iconic Mount Fuji .

The day you visit Hakone, don’t forget to pray for a lovely sunny day to see the mountain! If the sky is cloudy, there is no chance of viewing Mount Fuji, though!

Day 12: Tokyo City

Icho Namiki during autumn, Tokyo

This is a trip that includes the best attractions of Tokyo City. If my recommendations here don’t inspire you to explore the city, replace with your own choices.

Tokyo in November is stunning with its parks and streets that ablaze with vivid colors. There is a list of best Tokyo’s autumn leaves spots.

Among these notable koyo spots, you have already visited at least two, Shinjuku Gyoen, and Yoyogi Park.

Have your breakfast and then discover some awesome places around Tokyo City! Start your morning by taking a walk along the avenue lined with ginkgo trees of Meiji Jingu Gaien (Icho Namiki) . Icho Matsuri is held there during the peak season (mid November through early December).

At the time of the festival, a lot of people come to admire the beautiful foliage here. That’s for why I tell you to visit the festival site in the morning, before it gets crowded!

Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo City

After enjoying the festival, head to Sendagaya Station and then hop onto a train to Iidabashi Station (8 minute ride) on the JR Chuo-Sobu Line (yellow). From there, you have to walk for 6-8 minutes to reach Koishikawa Korakuen .

This is a traditional Japanese landscape garden with ponds, mandmade hills, trails, and trees of different kinds such as plum, cherry, and maple. You can spend an hour here viewing red maple leaves!

Head over to Asakusabashi Station on the JR Sobu Line, then transfer to Asakusa Station. Walk for a while from the station to Sensoji Temple (Asakusa Kannon Temple) .

Enjoy a walk along Nakamise , a shopping street. In fact, this is the path that leads you to the temple complex. You will also see an impressive shrine located next to the temple.

Japan in November, Travel Guide

Your next place to visit is Tokyo Skytree , the tallest tower in Japan with a height of 634 meters. Enjoy a great bird’s eye view from its observatories. You can have your lunch at Sky Restaurant 634 (Musashi) .

I would recommend you two more spots to see for today before you call it a day, they are: Tokyo National Museum and Rikugien Garden . In search of history of Japan, one must get to Tokyo National Museum.

On the other hand, Rikugien is another beautiful Japanese landscape garden where maple trees are illuminated gorgeously in the evening till 9:00 pm at night.

Day 13: Shinjuku to Narita/Haneda Airport

Nartia International Airport, Tokyo

It’s time to say “Goodbye” to Japan!

Get to the airport well in advance and check your flight schedule. However, if you have enough time before takeoff, spend some time on shopping (duty free) at Narita and Haneda airports. You can buy some souvenirs to take home.

If you have few more days to travel around Japan, you can visit a number of places except the above ones such as Nikko, Yamanashi, Ibaraki, and Yokohama .

It’s my pleasure to introduce this suggested itinerary. You can modify it on your own; there is no problem at all. To see the best of Japan in November, follow my guides and this travel plan, I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

I do hope you will have a great time in Japan this November. Take care and have fun!

What people love about Japan Tours in October

This tour was fantastic. The tour owners are foodies so we were told and it showed. The tour itself was terrific and well organized but on top of that the restaurant and other food choices etc. were just stellar.
We had an amazing time on this tour. We visited so many places in such a short time. Our tour guide Yumi was friendly and fun, providing tips and helpful information along the way. Our bus driver Shingo was a great driver, manoeuvring his way through the traffic with ease. He was so much fun as well. The tour itself provided a diverse mix of activities and meals, as well as allowing some free time to explore. The hotels were of a good standard and size, always convenient to public transport.
All good. Very immersive and worthwhile experience.

Best places to visit in japan.

Known as the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan's civilization dates as far back as 30,000 years. Today, the archipelago seamlessly blends its rich history with its ultra-modern present. And while its capital, Tokyo, is a must-visit for first timers, Japan has so much more to offer travelers of all types, from cherry blossoms to white sand beaches to soothing onsen (hot spring spas). U.S. News took into account cultural attractions, culinary options and accessibility (among other factors) to bring you the best places to visit in Japan. This metropolis is a feast for the senses. Neighborhoods like Ginza and Akihabara buzz with flashing lights and larger-than-life shopping, while Meiji Shrine and the Tokyo Imperial Palace give you a look into Japan's storied past. There are also a number of green spaces like Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, which acts as a place to escape from the chaotic, concrete jungle. What's more, Tokyo is regularly regarded as a top foodie city thanks in part to its abundant Michelin-starred restaurants (the most you'll find in any city in the world), so come hungry.

Travelers most interested in Japan's history and traditions should head to Kyoto. Centrally located on the archipelago, Kyoto has long been considered the cultural capital of Japan. Here, you'll find more than 1,000 Buddhist temples and 400-plus Shinto shrines (you can't miss the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha), including a whopping 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can also stroll through geisha districts like Gion and Miyagawacho, admire classic wooden architecture and visit traditional teahouses before checking out more modern attractions, such as the Kyoto Aquarium.

Nikko is the place to go to see lavish architecture surrounded by nature. Head to Nikko National Park, one of Japan's oldest national parks, to enjoy an up-close look at traditional structures situated alongside mountains, lakes, waterfalls and hot springs. The park is especially beautiful in fall when its trees display vivid shades of yellow, red and orange. The 103 Edo-era (1603–1868) temples and shrines in Nikko include world-renowned sites like Toshogu Shrine and Rinnoji Temple.

Situated about 35 miles southwest of Kyoto, this port city is worth a visit for its food alone. One of the city's most famous dishes, the tasty pancake-like okonomiyaki (which means "grilled as you like it" in Japanese), is made with batter, cabbage and your choice of meat and other toppings. After you've gotten your fill of the delectable local cuisine, explore the flashy Dotonbori neighborhood, check out the reconstructed 16th-century Osaka Castle or head to contemporary sights like Universal Studios Japan and the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

As Japan's second most populous city, Yokohama is often touted as a more approachable and more affordable alternative to Tokyo (located 22 miles northeast). As one of the country's first ports to open to international trade, Yokohama features unique culture fusions, including a sizable expat population, Western-style buildings in the Yamate area and the largest Chinatown in Japan (it has more businesses than residents). While here, visitors can explore Minato Mirai 21, the city's modern central district teeming with skyscrapers and shopping malls, and visit museums ranging from the Cup Noodles Museum to the Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum.

More than 160 islands comprise Okinawa, a top destination for snorkeling and diving. The Japanese prefecture boasts proximity to multiple coral reefs teeming with fish, manta rays and hammerhead sharks that you can access from beautiful beaches like those found on Okinawa's Kerama Islands. These 20-plus islands are also ideal places to see migrating whales between January and March. Back on the main island, visitors will find one of the world's largest aquariums, several castle ruins and a museum that focuses on Okinawa's unique history and culture. And on the less developed Iriomote Island, adventurous travelers can hike to awe-inspiring waterfalls.

Spared from World War II air raids and the major natural disasters that have affected other Japanese cities, Kanazawa on the western coast is home to some of the country's best-preserved architecture from the Edo period. Sites like Kanazawa Castle, Seisonkaku Villa and Myoryuji temple are popular among visitors, as are the Higashi Chaya geisha district and Nagamachi Samurai District. Plus, no trip to Kanazawa would be complete without a visit to the resplendent Kenrokuen Garden. With its water features, bridges and a variety of flowering trees that add beauty to any season, Kenrokuen is often described as the perfect garden.

Nestled in the mountains of the Gifu prefecture, Takayama is ideal for visitors looking for a rural retreat with a dose of history. Start your visit with a rickshaw ride through the well-preserved old town, which features sake breweries, traditional residences and shops that date back to the feudal ages. Then, head to the Hida Folk Village, a former farming village with 30 gassho-style houses. When you've worked up an appetite, indulge in must-try local specialties including Hida beef and Takayama ramen. To further immerse yourself in Takayama culture, visit during the Takayama Festival, held for two days every spring and fall.

The country's tallest mountain and one of its most iconic landmarks is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. For centuries, Japanese artists and poets have been inspired by Mount Fuji's almost perfectly round form. The Fuji Five Lakes region at the foot of this UNESCO World Heritage Site makes a great base for the thousands of climbers who visit each year. Enjoy the area's museums and amusement park during the warmer months. Or, arrive in winter to soak in the onsen and ski Mount Fuji's slopes.

Located on Kyushu (Japan's third-largest island), Fukuoka offers travelers a mix of urban sprawl, sandy coastlines and ancient temples and shrines. Can't-miss sights include Tochoji Temple – home of the largest sitting wooden Buddha in Japan – and Nokonoshima Island, which features colorful flower fields and beautiful views of the surrounding bay. Fukuoka is also known for its incredible Hakata ramen, so be sure to try this tasty dish at one of the city's many food stalls. Plan your visit around one of Fukuoka's lively festivals, such as the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, which takes place throughout the first half of July.

Head to the smallest of Japan's four main islands if you're looking to get off the beaten path. Shikoku is best known for its 88 Temple Pilgrimage – a nearly 750-mile loop that covers sacred sites around the island. Whether you're trekking this path or creating your own, you'll encounter Shikoku's natural beauty (think: forest-covered mountains and an unspoiled coastline). Meanwhile, the city of Kochi features cheap eats and a well-preserved castle. If you're visiting in mid-August, add Shikoku's cultural pinnacle, Awa Odori, to your itinerary. One of the most famous festivals in Japan, this dance celebration in the city of Takushima is a must-do.

Mountainous Hakone is one of Japan's most popular hot spring destinations. Nestled within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, the town features 17 different hot springs, plus a hot spring theme park with unique baths like one with coffee and another with mulled wine. After you've dried off, visit one of Hakone's art museums, such as the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the Okada Museum of Art or the Hakone Museum of Art. No Hakone vacation would be complete without enjoying spectacular views of Mount Fuji from Lake Ashinoko and the Komagatake Ropeway.

After an earthquake caused significant damage to the city in 1995, Kobe rebuilt itself into a thriving cosmopolitan city. You'll want to remember to bring your appetite when you visit. Kobe is famous for its namesake beef, as well as its sake. It's also considered one of Japan's most attractive cities, with sleek architecture and beautiful green spaces like Sorakuen Garden. For some of the city's best views – especially at sunset – go to the top of Mount Rokko or ride the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway. End your evening exploring Nankinmachi (Kobe's compact Chinatown) or dining at one of Kobe Harborland's waterfront restaurants.

For many, Hiroshima brings up memories of war, as the city is where the world's first atomic bomb attack occurred in 1945. But today, Hiroshima is a city of peace, with the vast Peace Memorial Park as the center for monuments and memorials like the  the Children's Peace Monument and the UNESCO-certified Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Atomic Bomb Dome). It is also a city of great beauty. Travelers can take a scenic stroll through Shukkeien Garden, peruse the exhibits at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art or visit Sandankyo Gorge to hike or boat past its beautiful waterfalls, caves and coves.

Tourists flock to the island of Miyajima (formally named Itsukushima) for its prime attraction: Itsukushima Shrine and its postcard-worthy torii gate. To see the shrine at its most picturesque, try to visit during high tide, when the gate appears to float on the water. Since the island is just a 30-minute ferry ride from Hiroshima, it makes for a great day trip. However, visitors may want to stay the night at a charming ryokan (Japanese-style inn) to experience Miyajima at its most serene and walk by the illuminated shrine at night.

An outdoor-lover's delight, Matsumoto is just 22 miles east of Kamikochi, an awe-inspiring valley in the Hotaka mountain range. But though it serves as a gateway to the Japanese Alps, this city in central Japan should not be skipped over. As the birthplace of contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, known for polka dots and pumpkins, Matsumoto pays her tribute at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. Meanwhile, those who prefer more ancient masterpieces can visit Matsumoto Castle, one of the oldest and grandest castles in the country.

Japan's first permanent capital is famous for housing the Great Buddha, a nearly 50-foot-tall bronze statue of Buddha. You'll find this jaw-dropping national treasure in Nara's Todaiji temple, which is the one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. While on the temple grounds, explore the deer-filled Nara Park and the ornate Kasuga Taisha shrine. Also save time for visiting Yakushiji Temple, one of Japan's oldest temples that dates back to A.D. 730.

This peninsula situated 62 miles southwest of Tokyo makes a great getaway from the busy city. It is popular among locals and tourists alike thanks to its relaxing hot springs and stunning beaches. These, along with various museums and ryokans, can be found in cities like Atami and Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula's eastern coast. During spring visits, travelers will also want to check out Kawazu's vibrant pink blooms at the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. Meanwhile, on the southern and western coasts, vacationers will find more rugged yet equally scenic coastlines, such as Cape Irozaki and Dogashima.
