Tips for Tours to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen

Follow these tips to make the most of your Isla Mujeres excursions from Playa del Carmen:

  • Be prepared for a long day: It takes over an hour to drive from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, and then you’ll either board a boat there or take a ferry to Isla Mujeres. Be prepared for a long day of travel by car and boat – but it is so worth it!
  • Watch out for the tourist traps: Be prepared for some tourist traps once you first get to the island. Near the ferry location, it can feel very touristy and there are no shortage of souvenir shops, restaurants, and bars (i.e. Señor Frog’s) trying to get your attention. But once you head further into town and away from the bustling center, Isla Mujeres is a beautiful island full of adventure, relaxation, and hidden gems.
  • Don’t miss Playa Norte: Located on the northern tip of the island, Playa Norte (North Beach) is the best beach on Isla Mujeres, and has even been voted as one of the best beaches in the world by TripAdvisor. If your tour provides free time in Isla Mujeres, be sure to spend some time swimming or sunbathing at Playa Norte. It is within walking distance from the ferry terminal and marina.
  • Bring cash for island purchases: Cash is the preferred method of payment on Isla Mujeres when dining at restaurants and shopping for souvenirs. Bring enough cash to cover your expenses for any island purchases. If you don’t have cash, some restaurants (but not all) may allow you to pay with a credit card for a 5% surcharge.
  • Bring biodegradable sunscreen, a towel, and a change of clothes: Regular sunscreen is prohibited on most tours, so you’ll want to bring biodegradable reef-safe sunscreen for sun protection. You’ll also want to bring a quick-dry beach towel , and a dry change of clothes for the ride back to Playa del Carmen.
  • Don’t forget money for tips: Be sure to bring some extra money to tip your tour guides, as it is customary to do so.

Wondering about how to get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres ? Find out on this post!

There are many different ways to get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres. While there isn’t a direct ferry between Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres, transportation is not overly complicated.

In this guide, I’ll discuss the best options from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres. So, no matter your schedule and preferences, you can easily hop over to the magical Caribbean island.

Aerial view of Isla Mujeres Marina Port.

How to Get From Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres: Quick Guide

👉🏽 distance between playa del carmen and isla mujeres.

The distance between Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres is 84.7km (52.6 miles).

The distance from Playa del Carmen to the main Isla Mujeres ferry terminal (Puerto Juárez Maritime Terminal) to Isla Mujeres is 71.2km (44.2 miles).

Isla Mujeres is about 13km (8 miles) offshore from Cancun.

👉🏽 How Long Does it Take to Get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres?

The trip from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres should take between 1.5 hours – 2.5 hours.

Traveling from Playa del Carmen to the Cancun area takes approximately one hour, and the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres takes about 30 minutes.

The total time may vary depending on how you travel from Playa del Carmen to the Cancun area.

For example, a colectivo from Playa del Carmen to Cancun may take much longer than a private transfer or taxi.

The colorful signage of Playa del Carmen near the beach.

Best Ways to Get to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen

1. renting a car + ferry.

Renting a car and taking the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres is one of the easiest ways to get around because you have more independence and freedom.

When you rent a car, you can work on your schedule and not worry about the headache of coordinating transportation.

The main ferry terminals have parking available for the day or overnight.

It’s generally safe, but avoid leaving any valuables or belongings in your car when you leave it unattended for long periods.

If you’re driving from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminal, I recommend driving to the Puerto Juárez Maritime Terminal (or Gran Puerto Cancun, right next to it).

There’s a large parking lot, and easy to get to.

You can pay around $45 USD a day for a car rental, plus about 300 MXN ($17.50 USD) per day for parking at the ferry terminal.

🚙 Car Rentals at Playa del Carmen

Are you wondering where to rent a car in Playa del Carmen ?

There are hundreds of car rental companies in Playa del Carmen. Some are excellent, while others are more “scammy”.

When renting a car in Playa del Carmen, one general rule of thumb is this: if it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t legitimate.

You’ll find a lot of car rental companies listing extremely low prices. Then, when you pick up the car, they’ll try to charge x500 more for “mandatory add-ons” like insurance.

One of the best tools for car rentals is DiscoverCars . You can check out different prices across town and compare them with one another.

Aerial view of Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres.

2. Private Transfer or Taxi + Ferry

Organizing a private transfer or taxi from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminals is another easy way to travel.

You don’t have to worry about long travel times or the hassle of renting a car.

You can organize a private driver or taxi for the time you plan to leave and head straight there.

They won’t make additional stops, and you don’t have to worry about sharing your space with anyone else.

Private transfers or taxis from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminal should cost 600 MXN ($41 USD) to 1,200 MXN ($70 USD), depending on the driver and services.

🚕 Uber from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres Ferry

I don’t recommend taking an Uber from Playa del Carmen to the Isla Mujeres ferry terminals.

Uber in Quintana Roo was approved for operation in January 2023. However, taxi drivers have revolted against Uber drivers.

If you find an Uber driver on the app in Playa del Carmen, it might not be the safest choice.

The lifeguard tower in Playa del Carmen.

3. ADO Bus (Cheapest Option) + Ferry

An ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to the ADO Bus Terminal in Cancun , followed by a quick 5-minute taxi to the ferry terminal, is the cheapest way to get there if you’re traveling in a small group.

ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) is a private bus company that offers transfers all over Mexico, particularly in the southern regions. It’s a very safe and affordable form of transportation.

The bus from Playa del Carmen to Cancun leaves frequently and is pretty fast.

The buses usually have a bathroom on board, comfortable seats with charging ports (but don’t rely on the charging ports to work all the time), and even a movie playing in Spanish.

Since the bus tickets are per person, it may be cheaper to travel by taxi, van, or private transfer if you have more than three people in your group.

But it’s the most affordable option for just you and another person.

The price of an ADO ticket from Playa del Carmen to downtown Cancun is 240 MXN ($14 USD), though sometimes you can get tickets on sale during “non-busy” departure times.

🚌 ADO Bus Schedule from Playa del Carmen

There are two ADO bus stations in Playa del Carmen; both have regular departures to downtown Cancun.

The most popular ADO bus station is ADO Terminal Turistica Playa del Carmen, located right on 5th Avenue, on the corner with Juarez.

This bus station is closest to all the action and more convenient to get to since it’s right downtown.

The second ADO bus station is ADO Alterna Terminal Playa del Carmen, on Avenue 20 and the corner of Calle 12. This one is only a few blocks back from Fifth Avenue.

When you purchase tickets, you know which bus terminal you depart from. The ticket should clearly say “Turistica Playa del Carmen” or “Alterna Terminal Playa del Carmen.”

Buses leave from both stations every 15-30 minutes, starting around 6:00 a.m. and going until around 1:00 a.m. So, it shouldn’t be a problem getting to downtown Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

You can purchase your ADO tickets through the ADO website , the ADO phone app, or directly at the bus station.

View of the white sand beach of Playa del Carmen.

4. Shared Van + Ferry

A shared van from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres ferry terminal in Cancun is another cost-effective and convenient travel method.

Shared vans are convenient because they’ll pick you up directly from your hotel or chosen location. And they’ll likely drop you off at the ferry terminal or very close to downtown Cancun.

One of the downsides to a van is it might take longer depending on how many other passengers are going and when you’re picked up.

For example, if the van has eight different passengers, and you’re the first to be picked up, you’ll have to ride in the van while the others are being picked up.

There are many tour agencies and shared van services around Playa del Carmen. A shared van should cost around 350 MXN ($20 USD).

5. Playa Express (Colectivo) + Ferry

The absolute cheapest way to get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres is with the Playa Express (colectivo) and the Isla Mujeres ferry in Cancun.

However, it’s a bit more challenging to navigate.

The Playa Express is a public bus service that regularly operates between Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Vans leave every 10-15 minutes, regardless of whether it is full or not.

Playa Express begins on Highway 307, near Benito Juarex Avenida, Chedraui, and Mcdonald’s.

However, if it has space, you can hop on the colectivo/van at any point to Cancun. Simply head to the highway and flag it down.

Playa Express from Playa del Carmen to Cancun costs 55 MXN ($3.20 USD) and drops off at the ADO station in downtown Cancun.

You can take a quick taxi ride to Puerto Juarez Ferry Terminal to make the last leg to Isla Mujeres.

A bus in Isla Mujeres.

6. Tours + Ferry

If all of that is too complicated, the easiest thing you can do is hop on an Isla Mujeres tour from Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen is a tourist hotspot, so there are plenty of options for all those tourists. There are dozens of different tours to choose from.

Most tours organize roundtrip transportation to and from your hotel doorstep, meals, drinks, entrance fees, and other associated costs. This is by far the easiest way to visit Isla Mujeres.

It’s also a great way to meet people. Most tours have a small group of travelers, so you can easily make new companions if traveling alone.

If you’re traveling with your family or a group of friends, it makes the planning much more manageable.

It’s also great if you’re on a limited schedule. If you’re trying to squeeze in a lot of activities in a short time, a tour can help you fit it all in by having everything pre-planned and prepared.

The downside is you don’t get to plan your activities or work on your own time. Instead, you’ll likely be with a small group, going to the main tourist spots where all the tours go.

Here are three of the best Isla Mujeres tours from Playa del Carmen.

👍🏼 Isla Mujeres Unlimited! Fun & Party with Transportation

4.5 ⭐️ 101 Reviews

This Isla Mujeres Unlimited! Fun & Party Tour is the perfect option for solo travelers, small groups, and couples looking for the most exciting and action-packed way to visit Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen.

The tour includes round-trip transportation from your hotel in Playa del Carmen.

From Playa del Carmen, you’ll hop on a 9-hour tour with unlimited alcoholic beverages and refreshments, a buffet-style lunch, and two snorkel stops.

You’ll also have a few hours in Isla Mujeres, where you can relax on the beach, roam around town, or lay out at the beach club (the entrance is included in the price).

Considering how expensive and time-consuming transportation can be from Playa del Carmen, this is a great deal. And you’ll have plenty of drinks, food, and fun guaranteed.

Staff was really friendly and made the tour super enjoyable. Everything was perfect! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Carlos_L , Aug 2023

👍🏼 Isla Mujeres All-Inclusive Tour from Playa del Carmen

4.0 ⭐️ 68 Reviews

This Isla Mujeres All-Inclusive Tour from Playa del Carmen is another excellent option, including a trip to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy.

The tour offers round-trip transportation from your hotel in Playa del Carmen and takes you on a fun 8-hour adventure on a high-speed catamaran.

Throughout the day, continental breakfast, buffet lunch, beers, and refreshments are included.

You’ll be able to enjoy the buffet lunch peacefully while on Isla Contoy, an uninhabited island.

The tour also stops at several snorkel spots, where you can explore the beautiful Mesoamerican Reef and see the lively marine life.

You may even get lucky and get to swim with sea turtles!

This is a less “party-focused” tour with more emphasis on the stunning nature and beautiful wildlife of the Riviera Maya and the Caribbean Sea.

It’s perfect for small groups, families, and solo travelers.

Fantastic experience! The guides were super helpful, knowledgeable, and kept the drinks flowing. They made the entire experience very fun! 😁 Would highly recommend and already want to come back! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kyle_L , Jun 2023

A bridge at Isla Contoy.

👍🏼 Isla Contoy & Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen

5.0 ⭐️ 4 Reviews

This Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres Tour is another action-packed full-day adventure around the Caribbean Sea. The six-hour tour begins at your hotel in Playa del Carmen.

From there, you’ll head to the marina with the group and sail on a catamaran to Isla Contoy.

The guide will take you to all the best snorkeling spots near Isla Contoy, so you’ll hopefully catch a glimpse of some of the incredible marine life here.

Afterward, you’ll sail to Isla Mujeres, where you’ll enjoy relaxing on the white sand beaches or wandering through downtown Isla Mujeres.

This tour includes round-trip transportation, meals, unlimited drinks, and all the equipment you need on the boat or snorkeling.

This is a fun, low-key adventure from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres that couldn’t make the Isla Mujeres day trip any easier.

If you are in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, I suggest you do this tour! The beaches are really beautiful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cristian_A , Jul 2023

Taking the Ferry from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres

⛴ puerto juárez maritime terminal.

Several ferry operators run out of Puerto Juarez Maritime Terminal and Cancun. Ultramar is the most popular ferry provider for tourists.

The Puerto Juarez Maritime Terminal, or Gran Puerto, is 5 miles from downtown Cancun. It’s really easy to get to.

The trip from Gran Puerto to Isla Mujeres takes about 25 minutes.

🎫 Ferry Price for Adults : 270 MXN ($16 USD) one way, 540 MXN ($31 USD) roundtrip.

⏰ Ferry Schedule : Every half hour from 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and every hour from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

⛴ Ultramar Terminal Playa Tortugas

Ultramar Terminal Playa Tortugas is in Cancun’s hotel zone at KM 7. The terminal is much easier for tourists in the hotel zone, but the Isla Mujeres ferry schedule is more limited.

The trip from Terminal Playa Tortugas to Isla Mujeres takes about 40 minutes.

⏰ Ferry Schedule : 9:30 am, 11:00 am, 12:15 pm, 1:30 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:30 pm, 6:00 pm.

Aerial view of the docks in Isla Mujeres.

⛴ Ultramar Terminal Playa Caracol

Terminal Playa Caracol is also in Cancun’s hotel zone at KM 9.5. There is a dock fee at Playa Caracol, so tickets will be more expensive than what’s listed on the website.

The dock fee is usually between $3 to $5 USD.

⏰ Ferry Schedule : 9:45 am, 11:15 am, 12:30 pm, 1:45 pm, 3:15 pm, 4:45 pm, 6:15 pm.

⛴ Punta Sam Terminal

Punta Sam Terminal is the cargo or car ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres . The ferry takes about 45 minutes and runs on a more constricted Isla Mujeres ferry schedule.

While the ride is smooth sailing, bringing your own vehicle to Isla Mujeres is not recommended. The roads are tiny and narrow. They aren’t really made for regular cars.

Punta Sam Terminal is about 50 minutes from downtown Cancun and 30 minutes from Cancun’s ADO terminal.

🎫 Ferry Price : A traditional family car is 440 MXN ($25 USD), including the driver, and a motorcycle is 150 MXN ($9 USD), including the driver. Each adult passenger in a car is an additional 230 MXN ($13 USD).

⏰ Ferry Schedule : Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., Saturday 7:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 4:00 p.m., Sunday 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m.

Getting Around Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is split into two main parts: the north point and the south point.

The ferry from Cancun drops you off right in the center of North Isla Mujeres, where you can easily walk to many of the downtown hotels, restaurants, and the well-known Playa Norte.

Walking to anything you do on the island’s north side is straightforward. And most of what you’ll need regarding food and beach time is found on the north end, anyway.

However, if you want to venture to other parts of Isla Mujeres, like Punta Sur (the easternmost point in Mexico), you’ll need to find a more efficient mode of transportation.

✔︎ Golf Carts

Electric golf carts are the most popular way to zip around the island. The roads are narrow and windy, not exactly built for cars, but perfect for golf carts.

There are golf cart rental companies all over the north side of Isla Mujeres, so it’s pretty easy to find the perfect one.

The rentals cost around 1,200 MXN ($70 USD) for 24 hours, but prices may vary depending on the season and who you’re working with.

When you’re driving around, make sure to explore all parts of Isla Mujeres. There are many beautiful vistas on the other end of the island.

Just watch out for topes or speedbumps. They can pop out of nowhere, and the last thing you want is a damaged golf cart because of a speed bump.

The Moon Statue in Isla Mujeres on a clear sky.

✔︎ Motorbikes/Scooters

You can rent a motorbike or scooter if a golf cart isn’t your thing. These are little electric, automatic motorbikes that usually don’t exceed 65 km (40 mph).

Motorbikes are much more affordable than golf carts and usually cost around 300 MXN ($17 USD) per day.

While motorbikes are really fun to drive around, they’re also very dangerous.

There are multiple scooter accidents daily between Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, some of which are fatal. You have to drive very cautiously.

Hiring a taxi is the next best option if you don’t want to drive around.

There are many taxi drivers near Playa Norte and downtown Isla Mujeres, so it should be easy to snag one.

If you plan on taking a taxi to the other side of the island, you can look into hiring a driver for the day or a few hours, as there aren’t many taxi drivers without passengers.

Taxis around town usually cost around 50 MXN ($3 USD) to 100 MXN ($6 USD). Taxis from Playa Norte to Punta Sur cost about 150 MXN ($9 USD) each way.

Generally, a taxi driver charges around 300 MXN ($17 USD) per hour if you’d like to hire a driver for a few hours and save yourself the hassle of finding a new driver every time you get out of the cab.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

🏝 explore the beaches.

Isla Mujeres has earned international recognition for its beautiful beaches, so you have to make sure you spend some time exploring some of the best beaches on Isla Mujeres.

Playa Norte is the most notable beach on the island, actually earning a spot on Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards of the best beaches in the world.

Playa Norte is characterized by its white sand beaches, calm turquoise waters, and many exciting beach activities. The water is pretty shallow and almost always warm.

You’ll find beach clubs, bars, and water sports activities lining the beach.

But Playa Norte isn’t the only beach in Isla Mujeres. If you have the time, venture out to other lesser-known sports for fun in the sun.

Here are some other beaches on Isla Mujeres:

🌊 Playa Centro (Central Beach) : The first beach visible from the ferry, located in downtown Isla Mujeres close to Playa Norte.

🌊 Playa Albatro (Albatro Beach) : On the west coast of Isla Mujeres, a smaller, less populated beach closer to the island’s south side. There’s a beach club here with a few umbrellas and hammocks.

🌊 Isla Contoy : An uninhabited island about 30 km (18 miles) off the coast of Isla Mujeres. You can visit on a day trip and relax on the practically untouched Caribbean Beach.

Punta Sur Temple.

🏝 Book a Snorkeling Tour

5.0 ⭐️ 1,358 Reviews

Snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres , so take some time to get out in the water.

Unfortunately, there isn’t the best snorkeling right offshore, so joining a snorkeling tour is highly recommended.

The Riviera Maya is located on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef behind the Great Barrier Reef.

This reef is full of fun marine life, including sea turtles, colorful fish, starfish, and other sea creatures.

Additionally, the underwater museum is right off the coast of Isla Mujeres.

The museum has over 500 lifesize structures and sculptures, including art pieces, sunken cars, and other unique items.

The underwater structures have become integrated into ocean life over time, as well.

This Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour Adventure is one of the best snorkeling tours on the island.

First, you’ll go to “Lighthouse Reef,” a shallow and fun snorkeling spot.

Next, you’ll visit the underwater museum. And finally, you’ll stop at the largest near Isla Mujeres, “Manchones.”

This Isla Mujeres Snorkeling tour also provides a delicious, fresh ceviche lunch, sandwiches, and beverages on board the boat.

Great trip! Everything was very well organised and the guides did a very good job – in English also! Recommended undoubtedly! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Georgios_P , Aug 2023

People snorkeling at Isla Mujeres.

🏝 Scuba Diving at MUSA

If snorkeling just isn’t enough action for you, try scuba diving in the warm waters around Isla Mujeres. MUSA (the underwater museum) is the most popular dive shop here.

While you can see a lot of the museum snorkeling, you can see even more while scuba diving.

If you’re already scuba certified, this is an excellent two-tank dive to MUSA Underwater Museum and Manchones Reef .

You’ll follow your PADI-certified instructor and can choose between two dive times, depending on what works best for your schedule.

If you’re not scuba certified but up for an adventure, consider a PADI Discover Dive. This is a PADI-instructor lead guide following a brief course in the pool.

This is an excellent way to dip your toes into scuba diving in a safe and comfortable environment. If you’re still confident, check out this PADI Discover Dive to MUSA and the Manchones Reef .

🏝 Go on a Catamaran Tour

Another excellent way to enjoy the beautiful Caribbean Sea is on one of the incredible catamaran tours.

These boat tours generally include several snorkeling stops, an open bar buffet-style meals, and everything you might need for the day.

This is not only the best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Caribbean but also an excellent way to meet other travelers.

Usually, the groups are pretty small, and other like-minded travelers will be aboard (unless you book a private tour).

If you’d like your private tour from Isla Mujeres, check out this 4-hour Isla Mujeres Private Sunset Trip .

This trip includes a private catamaran for yourself and your family or friends and the use of snorkeling equipment, snacks, water, and beer.

If you’d like to hop on a beautiful catamaran cruise to Isla Mujeres from Cancun, check out this incredible Sailing Experience to Isla Mujeres in a Catamaran .

This is arguably one of the best ways to travel to Isla Mujeres. The tour includes entrance to a private beach club on Isla Mujeres, an open bar, and a buffet lunch.

🏝 Shopping at Downtown Isla Mujeres

If you want to spend more time on land, shop in downtown Isla Mujeres.

Ten or twenty years ago, the island was quiet, with only a large handful of shops and markets.

Recently, tourism has seen a boom, and shopping opportunities have exponentially expanded.

Nowadays, Isla Mujeres is such a fun place to shop. You’ll find practically anything here: island-style outfits, traditional Mexican souvenirs , high-quality tequila brands, handcrafted gifts, local chocolates, and more.

The end of Punta Sur.

🏝 Visit Punta Sur

Punta Sur is located on the southern tip of Isla Mujeres.

It’s an ecological park with a short boardwalk along the ocean, a lighthouse, a Sculpture Garden, and unbeatable views.

Punta Sur was once the home to an ancient temple honoring Mayan Goddess Ixchel, the Goddess of the Moon and wife of the Sun, and was considered a fertility goddess with life-changing healing powers.

Women traveled from mainland Mexico to Punta Sur, Isla Mujeres, for centuries to seek help.

Now, residents of Isla Mujeres gather at Punta Sur on New Year’s morning to greet the sun.

Punta Sur is the first place in all of Mexico to see the sun’s rays every morning, as it’s the easternmost spot in Mexico.

So, visiting Punta Sur, learning more about the history, and enjoying the beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea is a must-do while you’re on the island.

Where to Stay Overnight in Isla Mujeres

🛏 casa barco hotel boutique (budget).

Casa Barco Hotel Boutique is the best budget hotel, although it doesn’t feel like a budget hotel.

This cute boutique hotel is only 200 meters from Playa Norte and 600 meters from Isla Mujeres Beach.

It also features a small rooftop pool with a nice seating area, making it an excellent place to watch the sunset.

Everything, cannot fault anything. The AC was excellent, the wardrobe, balcony, bedroom, and views were exceptional. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stephanie , AUG 2023

🛏 Izla Hotel (Mid-range)

Izla Beach Front Hotel room.

Izla Hotel is the perfect mid-range accommodation with a large outdoor swimming pool, a private beach, a garden, and an onsite bar and restaurant.

The hotel is a bit further away from the center of Isla Mujeres, so it is not within walking distance of everything.

But with its private beach and endless amenities, you won’t need much while staying here.

Loved how it was a private beach and that it’s really away from the loud party. If you want to really unwind and relax, this is the perfect hotel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ GLORIA , SEPT 2023

🛏 Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets (Luxury)

Impression by Secrets Isla Mujeres room.

Impression by Secrets is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort toward the south end of Isla Mujeres.

The hotel is right on the beach, with incredible Caribbean Views. It also has a massive outdoor pool that overlooks the ocean, making it one of the most beautiful places in Isla Mujeres.

Guests can enjoy meals from the highly-rated onsite restaurant or spend the day sipping drinks at one of the two bars.

The Secrets all-inclusive experience is about as good as it gets.

It is a beautiful brand new resort and the butler service is amazing. The restaurant/bar staff are all so kind and helpful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ NICHOLAS , SEPT 2023

Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres

The best time to visit Isla Mujeres is typically from January to April when there is little to no rain, and the temperatures are not sweltering.

The rainiest months tend to be September and October, so you should avoid these months if you think rain will put a damper on your vacation.

That said, prices tend to be much more expensive during the high season, from January to April.

If you want the best deals, consider a trip during the rainy season or shoulder weeks (the beginning and end of the high season).

Isla Mujeres

Reasons to visit isla mujeres, the beaches.

Isla Mujeres is home to one of the top rated beaches in the world, Playa Norte (North Beach). Calm and clear blue water that is shallow for almost 100 meters. Then, it becomes deep enough to swim! A pristine beach, but is not isolated. The island has the perfect amount of charming beach bars and restaurants visited by international visitors.

Laid Back Vibe

Hammocks everywhere! These hammocks are so inviting and are a perfect compliment for this island’s chill atmosphere. It is not uncommon to come to here for a day trip and changing your plans to stay longer.

The unspoiled beaches are beautiful for long walks and the adult only hotels are ideal for relaxing lovers. The beachfront dining options are the perfect venues to view a starry sky. All inclusive adults only resorts, where each guests room often have in-room whirlpool tubs, a private black car and yacht service direct from the Cancun airport.

Water Activities

From swimming with whale sharks to snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, Isla Mujeres is the perfect place for underwater activities of all kinds. Home to a lighthouse reef, MUSA (underwater museum of art), and an ocean filled with brightly colored fish!

Isla Mujeres was named for the abundant statues of Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of love, fertility, and medicine. These were found by Spanish conquistador Francisco Fernandez de Cordoba in 1517. There is a sculpture garden and incredible views of the waves crashing into the cliffs at Punta Sur (South Point). Although not much remains of the ruins of Ixchel’s temple, you can still feel the presence this Mayan mythological goddess.

Sunrise + Sunsets

Isla Mujeres has astonishing sunrises and sunsets. Go to the southern part of the island (most eastern point of Mexico) for the opportunity to be the first in Mexico to see the sun rise above the horizon. The best place to view the sunset is the west part of Playa Norte.

Uncrowded and Less Expensive

Isla Mujeres is more or less inexpensive because it doesn’t have glitz and glamour like the bigger and more popular destinations in Mexico. It has grown in popularity, but is still not overly populated with tourists. The charm of Isla Mujeres is that the local people are welcoming and friendly, especially if you ask them about local experiences!

Easy to Navigate and Unique Finds

The center of town is only four by six blocks, which can easily be walked. The rest of the Island of Isla Mujeres is only four miles long, so there is no need for cars. The best (and most fun) way to travel around on the island is by renting a golf cart and discovering all the island has to offer. Enjoy the open-air carts and have fun driving. Local vendors and craftspeople sell beautiful merchandise. You can shop for goods on the beach and in vendor kiosks near Playa Norte and in town. Some examples of the best items are blankets, ceramics, hammocks, and beaded jewelry.

A beautiful tropical island in the Caribbean Sea, Isla Mujeres is a magical destination for travelers of all ilks. With turquoise waters, beaches and boats aplenty, Mujeres is sure to give you chills from its stunning beauty. Here is our guide to Isla Mujeres!

Isla Mujeres Beach

A Bit Of History

This idyllic, tiny island has been held in high esteem and cherished for centuries. Revered by the Maya as a holy place, it continues to be celebrated by locals and tourists alike. The history of the island dates back 1500 years when it was the sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel, known as the goddess of the moon, happiness, medicine and fertility. A temple to honor Ixchel was known to exist on the southern tip of the island and doubled as a lighthouse for those who would come to worship or harvest salt. The island remained a Mayan sanctuary until it was “discovered” by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1517.

Isla Mujeres Today

Isla Mujeres Today

These days, Isla Mujeres is celebrated as a different kind of sanctuary. One that provides a calm serenity from the intensity and party culture of its neighbor across the bay,  Cancun . The tranquil environment, charming people, gorgeous beaches and of course, delectable food are a warm welcome for all who visit. Although most visitors only come for a day, there are more than enough activities to keep people of all ages entertained for several days.

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

Is Isla Mujeres Safe?

Isla Mujeres is widely known as one of Mexico’s friendliest places and is considered very safe. The island itself is very small, making it very hard for significant crime to occur.

Additionally, there is a decent-sized Navy base on the island, keeping things peaceful and calm. Any crime that does happen on the island is typically done by chance, so be sure to keep an eye on your belongings and use common sense.

Where is Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres On A Map

Isla Mujeres  is a small island just off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, directly across the water from Cancun . Located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Isla Mujeres is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres

Looking for the best time to go to Isla Mujeres? The tropical climate in Isla Mujeres is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F), it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.

January – April

Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Isla Mujeres. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings.

When Is Isla Mujeres Hurricane Season?

Isla Mujeres hurricane season begins in late May and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Isla Mujeres are low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Isla Mujeres can still cause inclement and severe weather. Be sure to check weather reports ahead of time and we always suggest getting travel insurance during these months just in case.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres & Around

There are a couple of ways to get to Isla Mujeres and around the island. Note that some larger hotels in Isla Mujeres may provide free transportation to your hotel, so check ahead.

Yucatan Ferry: Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Holbox

Arrival By Ferry

The Ultra Mar ferry offers 3 places to disembark in order to get to Isla Mujeres, including Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Caracol.  We recommend Puerto Juarez. From Cancun, take a short taxi ride or a bus to the Puerto Juarez ferry terminal, where you can buy your tickets at the Gran Puerto Cancun (Ultra Mar) ferry dock. You can buy a one-way ticket for around $16 or a round-trip ticket for about $32. The boat leaves Puerto Juarez every half an hour from 5:30 am until 6:00 pm (they skip the 2:30 run, so there is an hour gap from 2 to 3 pm) and then every hour after that until 11 pm.

Isla Mujeres Catamaran

Arrival By Catamaran Day Cruise

Throughout Cancun & Playa del Carmen you can book a day trip to Isla Mujeres. These fun boats take you out on beautiful catamarans for a whole day of snorkeling and cruising. Full-day trips typically include all-day rum punch and buffet lunch on Isla Mujeres. Bring Sunblock! While you will have a limited time to explore the island, if you only have one day to visit Isla Mujeres this can be a fun adventure.

Book a highly rated catamaran tour here.

If you feel like upgrading, book a more luxury private catamaran tour here .

Isla Mujeres Golf Cart

Rent A Golf Cart

Golf Carts are a hugely popular way to get around the island and can be rented in town on Rueda Medina when you disembark from the ferry. The price will be between $50-$65 for a day. Make sure the cart is in good working shape when you rent it and we suggest taking a quick video of it before setting out, especially of any dings or dents already present. Prices are regulated and the same everywhere so look for the best quality and service.

Taxi in Mexico

Taxis On The Island

Taxis are plentiful on the island and can easily be flagged down or called by your hotel. Be sure to discuss the prices in advance of taking the ride so you don’t get overcharged. This is an easy way to explore the island.

Isla Mujeres Bicycles

Rent A Bicycle

Bicycles can be rented in town on Rueda Medina. Make sure the bike is in good working shape when you rent it and we suggest taking a quick video of it before setting out, especially of any dings or dents already on the bike. Make sure that a lock is included. Prices range from $10-$20/day.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

Isla mujeres top highlights.

There is plenty to do on Isla Mujeres. Whether you just want to relax or have an adventure, you’re sure to find something amazing to do. Here are some of our favorite recommendations.

Beaches on Isla Mujeres

1. Hit The Beach!

If it is pure relaxation you are seeking, Isla Mujeres has you covered. Easily laze away the day in a hammock at one of several beach clubs, splash around in the gorgeous sea, sip on a refreshing beverage in a coconut or get a massage at a pop-up stand on the beach. Your beachside options are endless. Playa Norte is the most famous beach on the island for its perfect white sand and clear waters. It often finds its way onto “Best beaches in the Caribbean” lists.

Eco and Historic Park Punta Sur Park in Isla Mujeres

2. Visit Punta Sur Park

A shockingly beautiful historic/eco park at the southernmost end of Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur is not to be missed for nature lovers. Complete with Mayan ruins, epic views, trails, cliffs, iguanas and more, taking a stroll through Punta Sur is a great way to get outside and experience something different on the island. Seeing the blue water here alone is worth it.

ISLAND LIFE TRAVEL TIP : GET TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel Insurance is a must in our opinion. Standard health insurance likely doesn’t cover you while outside of the country so travel insurance will cover any emergency medical needs as well as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage (it happens), flight delays, missed connections and more. You can easily compare the top-rated travel insurance plans here .

MUSA Underwater Sculpture Garden in Isla Mujeres

3. See An Underwater Sculpture Garden

Go on a diving or snorkeling expedition to nearby MUSA Underwater Sculpture Park. Possibly the largest underwater sculpture project in the world, MUSA is home to over 500 sculptures of people, animals, cars, and so much more. Envisioned as an artificial reef, the sculptures are now growing plants and coral on them giving an otherworldly quality to the experience.

Explore snorkeling and scuba trips to MUSA here .

Dive, kayak, or snorkel at Parque De Los Suenos at Kin Ha in Isla Mujeres

4. Parque De Los Suenos at Kin Ha

Looking for a different way to spend your day? Diving, kayaking, snorkeling, boating, and everything in between are always on offer at Kin Ha. No matter where your mood guides you, you won’t be disappointed. This unique and wonderful beach club also has several terraced pools to relax and look out at the sea. The entrance fee gives you access to everything you may need such as lockers, towels and washroom facilities. Food and beverages are at an additional fee.

Snorkeling in Isla Mujeres

5. Go Snorkeling

While Cozumel gets most of the praise for its world-class snorkeling & diving, Isla Mujeres is no slouch either. Besides the MUSA underwater sculpture garden, there are several other lovely sites and reefs easily within reach. Perhaps the most famous is El Farito with its bright corals and and colorful fish. Or, if you are here at the right time of year (late May to early September), take a boat tour to experience snorkeling with the incredible Whale Sharks! The largest fish in the sea.

Check out this popular snorkeling tour

Relax at Garrafon De Castilla in Isla Mujeres

6. Garrafon De Castilla

This off the beaten path place to swim, sun and snorkel is a perfect place to relax. A spectacular setting, soft sand, lounge chairs and just the right number of amenities. With very affordable prices and few crowds, this may become your favorite place to snorkel on the island.

*DO NOT CONFUSE THIS with the Garrafon National Reef Park, which is an entertainment center that uses captive animals to entertain tourists. Not to mention houses said animals in small enclosures. We at Island Life do not support such places because we feel places like these are unethical and we love animals.

Isla Mujeres Travel Guide: Things to do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico

7. Eat Your Heart Out At Mercado Municipal

Mercado Municipal is the central market of Isla Mujeres and is the perfect place for an authentic, no-frills meal. This lively local market offers a glimpse into island life with authentic meals at unbeatable prices. The atmosphere inside the market is always bustling and vibrant, with locals gathering to haggle over prices and enjoy lunchtime snacks. Whether you want delicious eats, fresh juices, or local produce, you will find it at Mercado Municipal. Come with an empty stomach, explore the different stalls, and try a bit of everything.

Keep in mind that Mercado Municipal can be busy at lunchtime, but the craziness of the food market is one of the reasons we love it. Some of the most delicious, fresh food on Isla Mujeres is at the market. Don’t miss out on the vibrant fish tacos and savory empanadas.

8. Take A Sunset Cruise

Isla Mujeres is known for its stunning multi-hued sunsets, and one of the best ways to experience the golden hours of sunset is on a cruise. A sunset cruise off the shores of Isla Mujeres is the perfect way to end a day of exploring the island.

There are a few sunset tours on the island, but the most famous is probably the sunset cruise offered by The Joint Reggae Bar n’ Grill . This 3-hour sunset sail includes live reggae music, unlimited drinks and more!

Isla Mujeres Travel Guide: Things to do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico

9. Bike or Golf Cart Around the Island

You can’t beat exploring Isla Mujeres on a golf cart or bike. While cars are permitted on Isla Mujeres, very few are on the island. This makes golf cart rentals the best way to get around, and let’s be honest; they are so much fun! Isla Mujeres is also the perfect destination to rent a bike and explore. You can rent a bike on the island for around $10-$20 (USD) per day.

You can easily rent a golf cart when you disembark from the ferry, and it will cost between $50-$65 for a day. You will need a valid driver’s license to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres. Once you get your golf cart, follow basic road rules and watch out for pedestrians. We recommend stopping at North Beach and Punta Sur to see the Mayan ruins dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel.

If you want to add an extra dose of fun to your visit to Isla Mujeres, consider this Golf Course Bar Crawl with a local guide and tour around the island, where you can sample Mezcal, Mojitos, Margaritas, and fresh guacamole.

Isla Mujeres Travel Guide: Things to do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico

10. Marvel At the Street Art

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful and vibrant town positively covered in beautiful street art, from the well-known sea wall murals to intricate paintings on buildings downtown. Trust us, you will want to have your camera handy while exploring the island and looking for street art.

The sea wall murals on Isla Mujeres offer a dose of art and activism. Many of the ocean-themed art pieces were created to raise awareness about important issues, including ecotourism, sustainability, and the conservation of whale sharks. They are scattered all around the island, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding some.

If you want to learn more about the history behind the murals, you can take a tour with the Isla Mujeres Street Art Tour . This tour takes you off the beaten path to help you explore the lesser-known street art of the island.

11. Go Deep Sea Fishing

Did you know that Isla Mujeres is a fishing paradise? It’s true! The breathtaking turquoise blue waters of Isla Mujeres offer various fantastic fishing options. Fishing here includes deep-sea fishing, spearfishing and inshore fishing. Whether you are an experienced angler or a beginner, fishing around Isla Mujeres is a great way to spend the day on the water.

Typically, the fishing excursions offered on the island include fishing equipment, bait, and tackle. You can catch a variety of fish, ranging from marlin and dorado to snapper, grouper and even tuna and mahi-mahi. It just depends on the season.

This highly recommended Private Inshore Fishing Experience is perfect for the whole family. Your group will board a private boat, head a few miles from the Isla Mujeres coastline, and spend time trolling for fish. Cast your line in the hopes of hooking barracuda, snapper, grouper and more, depending on the season.

12. Enjoy Yoga On the Beach

Is there a better way to enjoy island life than a calming yoga class with the waves lapping on the beach next to you? Build on those relaxing island vibes with a yoga practice that makes you feel centered and peaceful.

Most beach yoga classes on the island are 60-minute classes for around $20 (USD), and there are classes suitable for all fitness levels. Early birds can start their day with a morning session with the highly recommended Treehouse Yoga . If you prefer an evening practice, they also offer sunset yoga classes.

13. Stroll Down Avenida Miguel Hidalgo

Discover the charms of the Isla Mujeres pedestrian street of Miguel Hidalgo. This is a spot where you can enjoy the lively ambiance of the island. On this colorful avenue, you can find quaint boutiques, many restaurants, and a variety of tour operators.

We recommend visiting in the evening once the heat of the day cools down a bit and the entire avenue lights up. Avenida Miguel Hidalgo is a fantastic place to take an evening stroll and enjoy the fun island vibes of Isla Mujeres.

Remember that the restaurants in Miguel Hidalgo are catered towards tourists and can be slightly more expensive than those on the back streets. However, the quality of the meals is excellent.

14. Take A Day Trip to Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy is one of the most enchanting day trips in the Mexican Caribbean. Beautiful and uninhabited Isla Contoy is just 18 miles (30km) from Isla Mujeres. On the protected Isla Contoy, you can find stunning white-sand beaches, over 150 species of birds, and nesting grounds for sea turtles.

Many day trips to Isla Contoy include snorkeling, a tour of the island, and lunch. You’ll also have enough free time to explore or simply lounge by the beach and soak up the sun!

There are plenty of excellent day tours to choose from, including this highly recommended Isla Contoy Eco Adventure . This guided tour offers sailing and snorkeling on the beautiful Isla Contoy, along with a history of the flora and fauna of the island. After exploring, the tour includes a delicious lunch and open bar at an Isla Contoy hot spot. Note that most Contoy tours depart from Cancun so make sure you book a tour from Isla Mujeres if you are staying there.

15. Swim With Whale Sharks

Swimming with whale sharks is one of the best ways to experience the magic of Isla Mujeres. The waters around the island are on the migration route of whale sharks, making this one of the best places to spot them. From May to September, you can swim with these gentle giants in the waters off the coast and take in their enormous size and grace.

Whale sharks are incredible creatures, and seeing them in their natural habitat is nothing short of a spectacular experience. While snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks, you can also see manta rays and other marine life. Note that touching the whale sharks or inhibiting them in any way is strictly forbidden.

I’m new to traveling to Mexico and just started my research. Isla Mujeres sounds perfect! Would love a relaxing vibe versus big, party city vibe. How friendly is the island for Americans that don’t speak much Spanish?

Its very friendly. Many people speak English there. Enjoy!

Thank you for this brief but detailed information. I’ve been to a few cities in Mexico a few times but hadn’t heard of Isla Mujeres. I’m looking forward to going now and I can plan better because of what this site has put together.

I’ve never seen the ocean or flew on a plane! So I’m super excited to have so many first experience’s!!! February can’t come fast enough!!!!

I just came here to say that the underwater sculpture was one of my favorite parts of my trip to Mexico. I experienced it on a snorkeling tour and it was so worth it.

We had never heard of Isla Mujeres until coming across your guide when researching Mexico. This place looks amazing and now we’re going to make sure that we at least make a stop for a few nights here.

My family visited Isla Mujeres after coming across this visitor guide when planning our trip to Mexico. This place was great. We all especially loved Punta Sur Park. My teen enjoyed the Mayan ruins while my youngest loved all the little iguanas we found.

How is covid testing being handled on the island? We have been visiting Isla for over 10 years and haven’t been in over 2 years now due to covid. Planning on visiting at the end of October. Staying at Cabanas. We will need to be tested prior to returning to the US.

Testing is done internally at most large hotels and resorts, though many visitors choose to be tested at a local lab instead to avoid the possibility of a mandatory hotel quarantine if they get a positive test in the hotel. You can also get tested at the airport, but that’s sort of a last resort option in my opinion. I absolutely recommend getting Travel Insurance though just in case!

I had originally planned to just visit Mujeres for a day with my husband, then we read your guides about the place and decided to stay here. We love it. Such a relaxed vibe here, we ended up staying here for our entire vacation. Thank you!

Excellent guide(s), very helpful for planning a family vacation. We have been to the Yucatan so many times and it was such a pleasure to come somewhere new. Thanks.

I also recommend Guru Beach Club. Great guide here.

I was looking for a chill and amazing place for my birthday celebration and your guide sold me on Isla Mujeres..the island of Women! love that 😊 It was magical. Thank you!

Goodnesses me, ya’ll make it sound so exciting to visit Isla Mujeres! I have used this guide and the others to plan my whole visit! AAAAHHHHH I am so excited! Thank you for making it so easy for me. LOVE your guides!!!

Which park is better Xcaret or Xplor?

There is no clear winner, as they are very different parks. Xplor is a park for adrenaline-loving adventurers, as it has activities such as zip lines up to 45 m high, amphibious ATVs through the jungle, swimming and rafting in stalactite rivers and underground exploration. Xcaret is México’s Majestic Paradise where you will enjoy shows and performances, nature in the Aviary, the Butterfly Pavillion and the Coral Reef Aquarium, the beach, natural pools, a museum and more.

What excursions are there to do in Playa del Carmen?

In Playa del Carmen there is an excursion that takes you to explore the sky, the surface and beneath the earth, the Xplor tour. In this park you will fly on 14 zip lines, including the highest in the Riviera Maya; you will ride amphibious ATVs through caverns, caves and hanging bridges; you will swim and ride on a raft through stalactite rivers and go on an underground expedition with obstacles and contemplative areas.

What ATVs are available to use at Xplor?

Xplor's ATVs are amphibious vehicles capable of operating both in water and on land, so called because of their acronym ATVs - All-Terrain Vehicle. Xplor's amphibious vehicles allow you to travel through the park's jungle, caverns and caves.

What do the rivers of stalactites in Xplor consist of?

The stalactite rivers of Xplor are part of the longest underground river system in the world, which were formed more than 65 million years ago when an asteroid hit the Yucatan Peninsula. On the earth's surface, the crater basin began to fill with water that infiltrated, eroding the limestone and thus the large, millenary caves and rivers of stalactites were born.
