Planning a trip to Kerala? Here are the new travel guidelines

Kerala reported 26,701 new covid-19 cases and 74 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Kerala no longer requires a negative RT-PCR test result from travellers entering the state with both doses. Apparently, the government of Kerala made this decision seeing the pace of the Covid-19 vaccination.

"Important update for Domestic Passengers," Air India said in a tweet.

Requirements for passengers travelling to Kerala

• No RT-PCR test report is required for those who are fully vaccinated.
• Fully vaccinated passengers are required to carry a valid vaccination certificate for both doses

Meanwhile, Kerala reported 26,701 new COVID-19 cases and 74 deaths in the last 24 hours. As per the office of the state health minister on Sunday, the total death toll mounted to 21,496 and the active caseload stands at 2,47,791.

Earlier, on September 4, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a press conference after holding a meeting to review the state's COVID-19 situation, confirmed that the state will continue with its night curfew and Sunday lockdowns.

The trend of less than 50,000 daily new cases being reported in the country continued for the 71st consecutive day today. With 38,948 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the overall tally went up to 3,30,27,621, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated today. The death toll climbed to 4,40,752 with 219 fresh fatalities.

India has administered a total of 25,23,089 vaccine doses in the past 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 68,75,41,762

Traveling To Kerala? Everything You Need To Know

Kerala has recorded a surge in covid-19 cases, leading to tightening of curbs. can you visit kerala can you eat out.

For most of the past week, the state of Kerala has been recording a rise in Covid-19 cases.

On July 28, last month, Kerala recorded an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases. The number stood at a staggering 22,056 infections, more than half the national tally for the day. In response, the Kerala government ordered a complete weekend lockdown on the state on July 31 and August 1. In this time, Kerala also recorded the highest number of deaths per million, in the country.

Kerala's cases represent close to 45 percent of the daily cases being reported in India. The fear of a third wave knocking on its doors is real as an increasing number of cases of the highly infectious Delta variant are recorded.

A new set of guidelines was issued in the state on August 4 , with the relaxation of some norms following the strict weekend lockdown. In urban wards and panchayats where the Weekly Infection Population Ratio (WIPR) is greater than 10 (more than 10 infections in 1,000 individuals), a triple lockdown will be imposed.

Can you travel to Kerala?

Yes, both domestic and international travel to Kerala is possible. Travellers arriving in Kerala, by road, by air, and by train or bus, need to carry a negative RT-PCR report issued within 48 hours of entering the state as per a Health Ministry (GoK) order issued on July 18. This was later updated to exempt those who have received two doses of the vaccine.

Those who are not carrying a negative RT-PCR report will be required to take a test on arrival and remain in room isolation until the results have arrived. If the test report is positive, travellers need to seek immediate medical attention.

Registration on the Government of Kerala E-Jagratha portal is mandatory where an application for an e-pass for visitors can be made. Short visits to the state are capped at eight days.

Can you travel within Kerala?

There is currently no cap on inter-district travel within Kerala as long as it is in line with the current guidelines in the state. On August 4, the Kerala government issued fresh instructions following the weekend lockdown that has allowed for some curbs to be lifted. Shops (both essential and non-essential) can remain open from 7 am to 9 pm, on all days except Sunday.

A special allowance has been made for shops to remain open on August 15 and August 22 on account of Independence Day and Onam.

However, there is a rider here. Only staff and visitors who have received at least one dose of the vaccination more (15 days ago or more), or can display a negative RT-PCR test report, are allowed to enter. Social distancing measures will need to be followed as per the size of the establishment. Restaurants and hotels are allowed delivery.

Public transport is allowed with strict masking and social distancing protocol.

Entry to religious places is allowed but capped at 40 people at a time. Earlier last month, Sabarimala Temple was open to 5,000 visitors between July 17 and 21 for the yearly Masapooja.

Can you travel from Kerala to other states?

In view of the mounting cases in the state, other states have taken cognisance and tightened curbs for those travelling from Kerala. Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu require negative RT-PCR test reports for travellers from Kerala, issued not more than 72 hours in advance. This is irrespective of the vaccination status of travellers.

On August 5, Goa has also made negative RT-PCR test reports mandatory for travellers from Kerala. Earlier a Rapid Antigen Test (RAG) report was accepted.

What to know about traveling in Kerala

To Kerala: RT-PCR negative test report issued 48 hours in advance and registration of E-Jagratha platform mandatory. E-pass application for short-term and long-term visits can be carried out here. Fully vaccinated individuals can carry their vaccination certificate instead of an RT-PCR test report.

Within Kerala: No restrictions for inter-district travel within current lockdown guidelines.

Other states: Travellers from Kerala need to carry a negative RT-PCR test report in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Goa.

There are two major cities in Kerala which account for the majority of travelers. State capital, Thiruvananthapuram and Cochin have both railway stations and airports. Special buses and trains are running from other parts of the country to Kerala. Travel advisory june 23, 2023, india - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Exercise increased caution in India due to crime and terrorism.

Do not travel to:

• The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (except the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh) due to terrorism and civil unrest .
• Within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border due to the potential for armed conflict .

Country Summary : Indian authorities report rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India. Violent crime, such as sexual assault, has occurred at tourist sites and in other locations.

Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and government facilities.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in rural areas from eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana through western West Bengal as U.S. government employees must obtain special authorization to travel to these areas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined India has a moderate level of COVID-19.  Visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to your travel.

Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Avoid all travel to this state (with the exception of visits to the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh). Sporadic violence occurs particularly along the Line of Control (LOC) separating India and Pakistan, and in tourist destinations in the Kashmir Valley: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. The Indian government prohibits foreign tourists from visiting certain areas along the LOC.

India-Pakistan Border – Level 4: Do Not Travel

India and Pakistan maintain a strong military presence on both sides of the border. The only official India-Pakistan border crossing point for persons who are not citizens of India or Pakistan is in the state of Punjab between Attari, India, and Wagah, Pakistan. The border crossing is usually open but confirm the current status of the border crossing prior to commencing travel. A Pakistani visa is required to enter Pakistan. Only U.S. citizens residing in India may apply for a Pakistani visa in India. Otherwise apply for a Pakistani visa in your country of residence before traveling to India.

Northeastern States – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Incidents of violence by ethnic insurgent groups, including bombings of buses, trains, rail lines, and markets, occur occasionally in the northeast.

U.S. government employees at the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India are prohibited from traveling to the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur without special authorization from the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata.

Central and East India – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Maoist extremist groups, or “Naxalites,” are active in a large swath of India from eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana through western West Bengal, particularly in rural parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and on the borders of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. The Naxalites have conducted frequent terrorist attacks on local police, paramilitary forces, and government officials.

Due to the fluid nature of the threat, all U.S. government travelers to states with Naxalite activity must receive special authorization from the U.S. consulate responsible for the area to be visited. U.S. officials traveling only to the capital cities in these states do not need prior authorization.

Kerala recorded 18,257 cases on Sunday, the highest single-day surge in the past few months.

New Delhi: With COVID-19 cases surging in Kerala, the state government has issued fresh guidelines.

Everyone coming to Kerala from other states should register on e-Jagratha portal and those who have been vaccinated also should carry out an RT-PCR test within 48 hours before arriving in the state.

People who are not vaccinated should undergo an RT-PCR test as soon as they arrive in Kerala and remain in room isolation at their place of residence till the results of the examination are received.

Kerala has imposed fresh restrictions 

On Saturday, Kerala had decided to impose restrictions, including making it mandatory for registration of weddings and house warming ceremonies.

According to a government order, details of public functions, including ceremonies like marriage and house warming, should be registered on the ‘COVID-19 jagratha portal’ in advance.

The number of people allowed for public functions organised indoor and outdoor venues has been limited to 75 and 150 respectively until further orders; PTI quoted state chief secretary Dr VP Joy as saying.

The restrictions were in view of the rapid increase in positive cases in the last few days and to ensure its effective containment, the order further stated.

The state police in a Facebook post said people coming to Kerala from other countries and other states have to register in the Jagratha portal.

'Urgently need 50 lakh vaccine doses to fight COVID-19'

The state has recorded 565 recoveries, and 25 deaths while the death toll stands at 4929 and 11,40,486 patients have recovered, so far.

On Saturday, the state had recorded 13,835 positive cases.

Meanwhile, Kerala Health Minister said that the state urgently needs 50 lakh vaccine doses to fight the COVID-19 surge.

She gave this statement after attending a meeting convened by the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.

New Covid guidelines have Kerala tourism sector in a bind

KOCHI: The new travel guidelines issued by the Central Government have gotten those associated with the tourism industry into a tizzy. Many fear the new guidelines will lead to a flurry of cancellations and some have already seen such a situation unfold. Everyone associated with the industry is keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that a repeat of the days of restriction doesn’t happen.

According to a tour guide (under the condition of anonymity), it is true everyone in the industry is worried. “The operators are under extreme pressure. People are not saying anything. But the atmosphere inside the industry is heavy. Many of them have invested a lot, especially in outbound tours. 

Some of the trips from France booked for February and March has already gotten cancelled. However, I feel that it is premature to get all worked up. Things might not pan out negatively,” he said. Meanwhile, Rojin V M, another tour guide said, “The news has had an adverse effect.

Already several French FITs have started cancelling their trips that were planned in February and March to India. These restrictions will definitely backfire on us. Nobody wants to take the risk of getting tested positive at the airport upon arrival.” According to Rojin, even if they are to explain to the guests that all these are just precautionary measures, they won’t believe them.

“The guests take the word from the media more. Also, elderly tourists don’t want to take risks” he said. Another tour guide said some trips, mainly UK clients, got cancelled as soon as the news about the restrictions first broke a week ago. 

“Now comes another batch of guidelines. Luckily, the countries from where a majority of the tourists arrive have not been included,” he said. Geethu Mohandas, founder, LetsGoForACamp, also said trips are getting cancelled after the new guidelines were released.

My Ultimate Travel Guide to Kerala | Solo Female Travel

Some people are complete water babies; they love beaches, lakes and everything aqua. Others love the land; hills, peaks and vast expanse of greenery. And others like me love both. And the best place to visit for the best of both worlds is Kerala. To make it even more exciting, you can travel solo to Kerala!

As a solo female traveller, what better place to explore than Kerala? Kerala is called God’s Own Country for good reason. It has repeatedly topped India’s HDI or Human Development Index for years now. It h as the best literacy rate in the country and ranks very high on the education and health fronts.  

And due to its picturesque locations, Kerala is a major tourist attraction as well. Solo female travellers like me prefer to go to Kerala because it is one of the safest places to visit in India. It even won the award for best governed state along with Tamil Nadu and Goa recently. Read the blog if India is a safe place for solo female travellers  to know more.

The people of Kerala are SO friendly and welcoming. The locals are used to having tourists around, and will go out of the way to help you. Here’s a pro tip: try to talk to the locals in Malayalam (the local language) , and see the bewilderment on their faces! Look up a translator app on your phone. Even a few words like Namaskaaram (hello), Nanni (thank you) and Kshemikku (Sorry) will do. Many people are comfortable with English, but a little Malayalam will not hurt. If you’re travelling solo for the first time, here’s a blog on  how to beat all awkwardness and just kill it!

A land of Cleaner roads and denser forests

Apart from this, what I really love about Kerala is its general cleanliness. The state takes its commitment to the Indian government’s Swachh Bharat Mission seriously. The cities, towns and even the small villages are well-planned here. So if you are a solo female traveller who is a cleanliness freak, worry not. Kerala is the place for you. Ah, and I cannot stop raving about the drainage system. Even on the worst of rainy days, this system ensures that the roads are not flooded. 

I am not exaggerating when I say that most of Kerala – even the habitable lands – resemble dense forests. I had to count the number of barren lands I encountered and trust me, they were very few. 

When should you visit Kerala?

The best time to visit Kerala is the monsoons (June-September). The green expanse of land adorned with glorious showers make for great viewing. The fragrance of the earth as the first drop of rain falls on it – called petrichor – is incomparable to anything. I liked stepping out on rainy days (with a raincoat on – OBVIOUSLY). But I also loved sitting in my room, looking out my window and marvelling at nature’s beauty. Of course, with a steaming hot cup of chaaya (milk tea) in my hand. Such was my Kerala experience, and being an introvert did not stop me from enjoying every bit of it. Are introverts good at solo tripping?

There are many wonderful places in God’s Own Country, no doubt. But these are my picks for top five cities to visit in Kerala for solo female travellers: 

 1. Alappuzha

Hear the word ‘Alappuzha’, and what immediately comes to mind is the backwaters. The backwaters are an intricate system of lakes, canals and other waterways that eventually meet the Arabian sea, the backwaters are a must-visit place in Alappuzha. 

You can take a relaxing ferry ride, or better even, rent a houseboat across the backwaters. The houseboats in Alappuzha are a tad expensive to rent, but totally worth it. It is literally a house in a boat – with wonderfully furnished rooms and bathrooms, and even air conditioning! 

On my solo trip to the Alappuzha backwaters, I rented an entire houseboat for myself. The staff of the houseboat were friendly and made me feel comfortable. They served me the local cuisine – complete with hot favourites such as the Karimeen pollichathu (Baked pearl spot), Pepper duck and Spicy fish curry. 

I absolutely enjoyed the scenic beauty of the Kuttanadan landscape! Each of the homes are like little islands and you need to row yourself to get to them. I could not believe my eyes when I saw this – I did not know that such a thing was even possible!

If you take a trip to Alappuzha as a solo female traveller, then you should surely go to Vembanad Lake. Fishing is the main source of livelihood here. If you are up for it, accompany the local fishermen on a fishing trip like I did. The precision and skill with which they catch the fish is just mind-blowing!

A non-touristy thing I did in Alappuzha is observe the coir-making process and even be a part of it. You must be wondering what coir is. It is a type of fibre made using the husk of the coconut. Not many tourists are drawn to Alappuzha’s rich coir industry. You may just get an opportunity to witness something unique after all. The entire process – from defibering to extraction is marvellous!

 2. Kumbalangi

Before the release of the 2019 Malayalam movie Kumbalangi Nights (which was even critically reviewed by the BBC), Kumbalangi was not well-known. Kumbalangi is a small island-type of-village in Kochi. If you like small, quiet hamlets teeming with life, then Kumbalangi should be on your travel list as a solo female travelling to Kerala. 

Kumbalangi’s highlight is its fishermen and their fishing. they do not use normal fishing nets for this, but rather Chinese fishing nets. They are called Cheena Vala in the local language, Malayalam. They are fixed for some time on the edges of the water body instead of being thrown at the time of fishing. Dozens of Chinese fishing nets adorn Kumbalangi’s shoreline and they are a sight to behold. 

The mangrove forests in Kumbalangi are another crowd-puller. As a solo female traveller, you will need a guide or a local to take you inside these thick forests. I suggest you do not go alone even for the sake of adventure because of wild animals. Mangroves also have a lot of leeches and other small insects, so better cover up! Wear boots and full-length clothes if you can. Many organisations do ‘mangrove walks’ in Kumbalangi now, so you can just sign up for them easily. 

As a solo female traveller on a trip to Kumbalangi, you may not find fancy places to stay here. However, you can always bet on good homestays in the region. Always look for Google reviews before you book a homestay. Enquire about the availability of services such as laundry and steam iron beforehand. If they are not available, you may have to look for other local options. 

If you like finger food, the thattukada (small eateries) in Kumbalangi are the right place for you. They serve tasty seafood with local catch from the sea. Fried fish with local masala, crab roast, deep-fried squid and prawn curry are some must-try dishes here. 

An exciting non-touristy thing I did in Kumbalangi is enjoy the ‘sea sparkle’ in the waters there. The sea waters emanate a unique fluorescent light due to the presence of bioluminescent algae. This is nothing unusual for the locals in Kumbalangi, but it was a never-seen-before sight for me! I waded through the shiny waters all by myself and enjoyed some ‘me time’. 

Cherai is the ultimate destination for beach lovers in Kerala. It is unlike the busy, always-so-crowded Marina beach in Kochi city. You will love Cherai especially if you are a solo female traveller because of the serene and calm atmosphere. 

Cherai does not have any touristy monuments or buildings to visit. What makes it special is the vast beach surrounded by rocks. It is one of the cleanest beaches in Kerala which follows a strict no-plastic policy. Why? Because of dolphins! Who does not love dolphins? Dolphin-sighting is a common pastime in Cherai. 

If you love taking photographs or love sketching picturesque locations, then you should go to Cherai. The sunrise and sunset, with fishing boats on the horizon, are just perfect for this purpose. If you wake up early enough, you can catch the sight of the fishermen loading the fresh catch into piles to sell them. 

I expected a lot from the Cherai cuisine, but was a little disappointed to find out that most dishes lacked salt in them. Especially in the dishes made of fish. I asked the proprietor of the property I was staying in about his and he said people use less salt in general in the area. I wonder why, to this day. If you are from the area or know anybody from Cherai, could you let me know why? 

I also noticed that there is saltness that lingers in the air at Cherai so I suggest you carry a scarf with you. Or else the wind might ruin your hair. And a bad hair day is not a good start to anybody’s trip, right? 

A non-touristy thing I did at Cherai was to give someone’s pet dog a walk! A tourist was looking for some help with walking her dog as she was carrying fresh fish from the Munnambam harbour. I offered to help her out (for selfish reasons as I love animals). I felt right at home in a strange land. A little kindness does not hurt anyone.

4. Thrissur

Elephants, temples, celebrations. These are what the cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur, embodies. If you want a slice of the Kerala festive spirit, then you should visit Thrissur around May. This is when the famous Thrissur Pooram, the annual festival of the Thrissurkar (People of Thrissur) happens. Mighty tuskers adorned in silks sway in unison to the traditional percussion instruments. People get immersed in the music and forget themselves. Bazaars are put up in the famous Sakthan ground, and everybody – from children to elders rejoice. It is nothing like anything you have seen before, mark my words. As a solo female traveller on a trip to Kerala, the Thrissur Pooram has to be on your must-visit list. 

The sites where the Pooram happens – the Vadakkumnathan Temple and the Paramekkavu Temple – are tourist attractions in themselves, even on a regular day. They are two of the oldest temples in all of Kerala. Getting up before dawn and taking a trip to the temple fields will give you a sense of inner peace. You could also chat up with the locals to understand the meaning behind the rituals. They can also give you a brief history of each temple and why they came to be built on that particular piece of land. 

Thrissur is nothing without the world-famous Swaraj Round or Thrissur Round. It is the second-largest roundabout in the whole world and the second in South Asia. It is 2 km long and connects all the major commercial hubs in Thrissur. The Thrissur Round is also special because it is the spot where the famous Puli Kali (Tiger Show) happens. It takes place during the Thrissur Pooram. 

Thrissur has some of the most iconic restaurants in Kerala. If you are a die-hard foodie like me, you should head to Bharath Hotel in Thrissur. Though it is called a ‘hotel’, it is not one. It is a restaurant. It is an Indian habit to call a restaurant hotel. Bharath Hotel is undoubtedly the best vegetarian restaurant in Thrissur. Fluffy pooris, crispy dosas and smooth thayir vadai (curd vada) are its specialties. If you love Biryani as much as I do, you should go to Sapphire Hotel (again a restaurant, not a hotel). The meat is deep-fried before being baked with rice and spices. Simply irresistible!

I did an exciting non-touristy thing in Thrissur. As I was passing through Swaraj Maidan, where elephants usually stop before their next festival or event, I got an opportunity to give a bath to a big elephant. I casually asked the mahout if I could pat the elephant. That is when he told me that he was going to bathe the tusker. I asked if I could join in and what followed was great fun. It was kind of scary at first, but I understood what a majestic creature the elephant is! Well, there is a first-time for everything I guess.

Travelling to Kerala as a solo female, but Munnar is not there on your list? Then there is something awfully wrong with your list! Hills stations are popular for their pleasant weather and erstwhile British charm, and Munnar is no different. It is the crown on the head of the beautiful district of Kerala that is Idukki. Temperatures never extend or go below 20 degrees in Munnar and that is why it is an evergreen place to visit. Suppose you want a place to relax and rewind during the unforgiving Indian summers – go to Munnar! 

If you like a hot cuppa, then the tea gardens at Munnar should be the place to go first. You could wear the hat of a fine tea sommelier for a couple of hours and taste the finest teas. the local tea pickers could show you how a typical day is for them, and you could do some picking too. Trekking around the hilly areas is a great option too, especially for solo female travellers to explore places on their own. 

Water falling with a rush of intensity has always fascinated me. And I love water bodies like dams. If water makes you happy too, then you should head to Munnar’s very own Mattupetty Dam. You could take a walk along the top of the dam or do some boating. The locals are very friendly at the dam and may even teach you a boating trick or two. If birdwatching is of any interest to you, you may be pleased to know that the dam is home to many indigenous birds and animals. Some of the wildlife is also endangered, so make sure you do not overstep boundaries while interacting with them. 

If you cannot get enough of wildlife, then the Eravikulam National Park is just the place for you. It has a bit of history attached to it as it is Kerala’s first national park. It is home to the very famous Lion-tailed macaque and the Indian Gaur. You can also personalise your tour to the park with your very own tour guide for a truly unique experience. 

Some tips to keep in mind

Travelling to Kerala as a solo female tripper can be very exciting. However, adhering to a few pointers can make the difference between a good journey and a great journey. Note the following before embarking on the ultimate journey to Kerala:

• Always be on your guard. If you are feeling ‘meh’ about your first solo trip, here’s a blog  on my first solo travel experience . As a solo female traveller on her way to Kerala, you need to know the local helpline numbers in Kerala. Dial 1090 for the Crime Stopper Helpline and 1961 for general inquiries.
• Kerala is very humid – whether it is pouring heavily or it is burning hot. So do not choose synthetic fabrics. Go for natural ones like cotton, soft silk or linen. 
• You need special permission to enter certain places. So enquire about the place you are visiting beforehand. 

• Culturally, people are averse to revealing clothing in the state. So being a little modest will not do you any harm. 
• Always watch your step in Kerala. I mean this literally. As much as we love dense vegetation and forests, we should also be wary of poisonous snakes. Do not walk in dark spots without a flashlight in hand. Do not forget to carry these important things too.

Lok Sabha Election Results: Naidu, Nitish, other NDA leaders hold meet at PM Modi's residence to discuss new govt formation

Naidu, Nitish, and other leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convened at the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deliberate on the formation of the new government. The meeting, which took place shortly after the victory of the NDA in the recent elections, aimed to discuss the allocation of ministerial positions and the overall structure of the upcoming administration. Key figures from various NDA constituent parties, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, were present at the gathering to provide their insights and suggestions regarding the formation of the new government. The discussions are expected to pave the way for a smooth transition of power and the establishment of a stable and effective government that will work towards fulfilling the promises made to the electorate during the campaign.

'BJP as a party only know how to fight straight forward war':

Madhavi Latha, a prominent BJP leader, recently made a statement comparing the party's approach to warfare with that of the Pandavas and Kauravas from the epic Mahabharata. She emphasized that the BJP only engages in straightforward battles, much like the Pandavas, while the Kauravas employed underhanded tactics and attacked from behind. Latha acknowledged that although the Pandavas emerged victorious in the Kurukshetra war, they suffered significant losses, including their own children, the Panch Pandavas, and the mighty warrior Abhimanyu. She drew parallels between this ancient conflict and the current political landscape, suggesting that in the battle between truth and injustice, the truth often has to make sacrifices and lose some of its supporters. "We have to sacrifice our beloved voters because of the wrong allegations, wrong misinterpretations, and wrong communication that has been passed onto those simple, poor, insecure people of this country," Latha stated. Despite these challenges, she expressed confidence that truth and justice will ultimately prevail, attributing the BJP's return to power to this belief.

Lok Sabha Election Results: NDA fared badly in final phase of LS polls in Bihar

The NDA's performance in the recent Bihar Lok Sabha elections was its worst since coming to power in the state. The BJP-led coalition secured only 30 out of the 40 seats, a significant drop from its previous tallies of 39 in 2019, 31 in 2014, and 32 in 2009. Despite ruling Bihar since 2005 and having a strong ally in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the NDA struggled to maintain its dominance in the face of the "Modi wave". The INDIA bloc, comprising the RJD, Congress, and Left parties, managed to win nine seats, with one going to an Independent candidate. The bloc's best performance came from the south Bihar region of Shahabad and Magadh, where it won six out of the eight seats that went to polls in the final phase. CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya noted, "Even though the INDIA coalition has underperformed in Bihar, the best performance has once again come from the south Bihar region of Shahabad and Magadh. Of the eight seats that went to the polls in this region on the last phase, INDIA has won six and put up a great fight in the other two". The RJD, the largest Bihar constituent of the INDIA bloc, won only four seats, falling short of its potential. The Congress, often considered a spent force in the state, surprised many by winning three of the nine seats it contested, including the Sasaram reserved constituency. The Magadh-Shahabad region also saw the RJD's strategic move to field Arun Kushwaha, a JD(U) turncoat, in the Rajput-majority Aurangabad seat, which paid off as they wrested the seat from the BJP. The INDIA bloc also made gains in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region, with the Congress retaining Kishanganj and senior leader Tariq Anwar winning back Katihar from the JD(U). Independent candidate Pappu Yadav, who calls himself a "loyal soldier of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi", won the Purnea seat, defeating the two-term JD(U) MP Santosh Kushwaha.

It is all a matter of numbers (govt formation). The public has rejected negative politics. We aimed to stop the BJP. I thank the public for this and their cooperation," he said. Akhilesh Yadav won the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency with a vote margin of 1,70,922 defeating BJP's Subrat Pathak who was the incumbent.

The Election Commission data reveals that the BJP secured victory in 25 out of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. However, the party's vote share declined from 63.11 per cent in the 2019 elections to 61.86 per cent in the recent polls. The Congress and AAP, both members of the INDIA bloc, collectively garnered 33.93 per cent of the votes in the 25 constituencies they contested. The Congress's vote share stood at 31.24 per cent, while the AAP managed to secure 2.69 per cent. In a closely contested battle, the Congress succeeded in wresting the Banaskantha seat from the BJP, preventing the ruling party from achieving a third consecutive clean sweep of all 26 seats in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. Despite fielding candidates in Bharuch and Bhavnagar as part of the INDIA bloc, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) failed to secure victory in these constituencies. The EC data also highlighted that in the 2019 elections, when the Congress contested independently without any alliance, it registered a vote share of 32.55 per cent but failed to win a single seat.

The Election Commission of India has announced the results for 542 out of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party, securing 240 seats, while the Congress party made significant gains, winning 99 seats. However, the BJP's victory count fell short of its previous performances in 2019 and 2014, when it had won 303 and 282 seats, respectively. In contrast, the Congress party showcased a remarkable improvement, nearly doubling its tally from 52 seats in 2019 and more than doubling its 2014 count of 44 seats. The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, exceeded expectations by crossing the 230-seat mark, presenting a formidable challenge to the ruling party and defying the predictions made by various exit polls. PM Modi has secured a third term, but the BJP will need to rely on the support of other parties in his coalition - JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP's chief Chandrababu Naidu. The BJP, having fallen 32 seats short of the 272 majority mark, will require the support of its coalition partners to form the government. This marks the first instance since 2014 that the BJP has not achieved a majority on its own. As the nation awaits the formation of the new government, the leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are expected to convene at Prime Minister Modi's residence later today to discuss the way forward.

Lok Sabha Elections: Maharashtra BJP holds meeting to discuss Lok Sabha poll results

A meeting of the Maharashtra unit of the BJP began here on Wednesday, a day after the party won nine Lok Sabha seats in the state, where its tally dwindled by 14 as compared to the 2019 parliamentary polls. Deputy chief minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and the party's state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule are among the leaders who are attending the meeting, party sources said. This time, the BJP and allies won 17 seats out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state, with the BJP's tally dwindling by less than half compared to 2019, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won 30 of the 48 seats. The BJP-led NDA fell significantly short of its target of bagging 45-plus seats in Maharashtra, garnering just 17 seats. The Congress won 13 seats, a quantum jump from the solitary seat it won in the state in 2019, while Shiv Sena (UBT) won nine and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) got eight seats.

After a weekend of heavy rains, severe floods in regions of southern Germany led several towns to declare states of emergency and to evacuate their citizens from heavily affected areas. Water submerged streets and highways, broke dams and derailed a high-speed train. Even as rain let up on Monday, emergency crews rushed to fortify dams along rivers in anticipation of further flooding.

On Monday morning, a 43-year-old woman was found dead in her basement in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district in Bavaria, according to the local authorities. She had been missing since Saturday night.

Several hours later, responders who were pumping water out of a basement in Schorndorf in Baden-Württemberg found the bodies of a man and a woman, according to the police. On Saturday, a firefighter died trying to save people, according to the district he served; another firefighter has been missing since Saturday.

Tens of thousands of emergency workers, both local and from other regions, are responding to the disaster, which affected Germany’s two southern states, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The responders, who include 800 soldiers, have rescued people stranded in their houses and cars, built emergency dams and set up crisis accommodations.

The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, visited the small market town of Reichertshofen, roughly 35 miles north of Munich, on Monday and said that the flooding represented a new reality as the effects of climate change are being felt in Central Europe.

“What is also important to me is that we are very clear that this is not just an event that has been happening for centuries,” he told reporters, noting that he had visited four active flooding sites this year alone.

“We must not neglect the task of halting man-made climate change,” he told reporters on Monday. “This, too, is a lesson that we must learn from this event and this disaster.”

Between Friday at noon and Monday at noon, 120 to 160 liters of rain, or about 30 to 40 gallons, fell per square meter (about 11 square feet), which is more than usually falls in a month, according to Sebastian Altnau, a meteorologist with the German Weather Office.

The firefighter who became the first victim of the floods had set out with three colleagues on a boat late on Saturday to save a family stranded inside a building. Before they reached the house, the boat flipped. While three of the firefighters were able to save themselves, the body of the fourth was found early Sunday, a spokeswoman for the district confirmed.

In the small southwestern town of Ebersbach in Baden-Württemberg, the water pushed through a highway wall on Sunday night. A video published on the city’s Facebook feed shows how the water turned the road into an impassable river in seconds.

About 15 miles to the northeast, near Schwäbisch Gmünd, a sudden mudslide pushed a high-speed train off the rails and buried a car on Saturday night, according to the national rail service. Rescue workers were able to evacuate the train of its 185 passengers, and no one was hurt. After signaling with a flashlight, the driver, too, was picked up by rescue workers, he told the German newspaper Bild .

In both Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg over the weekend, several dams broke, in some cases leading to flooding of entire neighborhoods. On Saturday in Reichertshofen, where the chancellor visited Monday, two dams broke despite being fortified with sandbags, allowing the Baar River to flood neighborhoods. Around 5,000 emergency workers helped with rescue and evacuation operations.

Responders spent much of Monday safeguarding against flooding from bigger rivers, which have swelled since the downpour. In the medieval city of Regensburg in Bavaria, in the southeast, emergency workers built a dam on Monday along the Danube River as it continued to rise. On Monday afternoon, the Danube’s level measured at over six meters, or nearly 20 feet — twice as high as it was on Friday morning.

The flooding has brought up memories of the disastrous Ahr Valley floods in 2021, which killed 189 people. The heavy rains, which scientists said were driven by climate change , led the Ahr River to rise sharply, sweeping up buildings, bridges and roads. At the time, the authorities were criticized for not warning the local populations properly.

Nancy Faeser, who, as Germany’s interior minister, is responsible for disaster response, traveled with Mr. Scholz on Monday. She told local reporters that she could see “lessons had been learned” in the Ahr catastrophe. “Coordination and organization work much better,” she said.
