Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Find out more about inadmissibility .

Permanent residents of Canada

We do not issue temporary resident visas (TRV) to permanent residents (PR). If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you must apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) instead. If you meet the requirements for a PRTD, you can return to Canada as a PR.

Know the rules before you apply to travel to Canada from India

indian tourist visa application canada

Francais | हिंदी | ਪੰਜਾਬੀ | ગુજરાતી

There are scammers making guarantees about working, studying or travelling in Canada. They charge a lot of money for bad service or no service at all. Their actions can have serious consequences for you and your family.

No one can guarantee you a visa

Scammers will tell you that you meet the criteria for a visa, even if you don’t, so that they can take your money. Don’t be fooled . Find out if you’re eligible to come to Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

On this page

Using a visa agent, consequences of fraud, application fees, fake job offers, student scams.

You can apply for a visa on your own, or you can use a visa agent (called a “representative” in Canada). The agent helps you fill out forms, and they can also submit applications on your behalf . If you use a representative, you must include this information in your application. If you don’t, the application could be refused, and you could be banned from applying for 5 years.

There are 2 types of representatives:

  • Unpaid representatives help you with the application process without charging a fee , and they often include friends and family members. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for free .
  • Paid representatives must be authorized in Canada to charge money for their services. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for a fee .

Authorized representatives are regulated professionals who understand Canada’s immigration and application processes. They can be lawyers, paralegals, Quebec notaries, or consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (opens in a new tab)   . They can explain the different visas, advise you on your application, and communicate with the Government of Canada on your behalf.

Learn more about authorized representatives (opens in a new tab)

indian tourist visa application canada

Be careful when hiring unauthorized visa agents

We won’t deal with visa agents who charge a fee but are not authorized representatives. If you use an unauthorized representative, we may return your application or refuse it.

Hiring a visa agent will not help your application get processed any faster or guarantee that your visa will be approved. Agents do not have special connections with Canadian visa officers. Canadian immigration officials follow the same steps and rules when reviewing all applications, whether you hire an agent or apply on your own.

If your application was refused, make sure you understand why it was refused before you reapply . Applying again with the same information is a waste of your time and money. It will not change the decision, and it will cost you more.

No one can guarantee that your visa will be approved .

If you hire an agent to help you fill out the application, ask people you trust to recommend an agent they used to get a visa. Get advice from a few people before you choose.

If the agent applies on your behalf, remember these tips:

  • Both of you have to fill out and sign the Use of a Representative Form (opens in a new tab)   . Failure to declare information on your application is considered lying, and your application may be refused .
  • Ask to be present when the agent submits your application through IRCC’s online system to make sure it gets sent. A lot of scammers will tell you that they’ve sent in your application, but they haven’t .

If you’re paying someone for their services

  • ask for a written contract and breakdown of the IRCC fees and the services you’re paying for
  • get a signed receipt for every payment you make

Don’t lie or send fake documents

It’s a serious crime to lie on an application or send fake or altered documents. Your application will be refused and you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years .

You’re responsible for the information you give in a visa application even if you use a visa agent .

If a Canadian visa officer finds false information on an application, you’re the one who will face the consequences—not your agent .

If someone tells you to lie on a visa application or give fake documents, they are putting you and your family at risk .

Never sign blank forms or applications given to you by a visa agent.

Before you sign your application , make sure that all the information in your application and supporting documents is true and that you understand everything.

If you send false documents or information or your agent does

  • your application will be refused
  • you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years
  • you could have a permanent record of fraud with IRCC

The Canadian government works with partners to train officers and watch for fake documents.

Don’t waste your money

You and your family shouldn’t be spending your life savings on an application. It costs around 6,000 (CAN$100) to apply for a visitor visa. Beware of scammers who charge a lot more than that. Application fees are the same for everyone.

  • temporary resident visa (visitor visa): $100 ( 6,000)
  • work permit * : $155 ( 9,300)
  • open work permit * : $255 ( 15,500)
  • study permit * : $150 ( 9,100)
  • biometrics: $85 ( 5,100)

You must pay to have your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) taken, but making an appointment is free .

Fees are given in Canadian dollars, followed by approximate rupee conversions.

Learn more about fees for applications and services (opens in a new tab)   .

* Once a study or work permit is approved, a visa will automatically be issued at no extra charge.

Beware of fake job offers and student scams

Scammers around you and on the internet will promise to get you a work or student visa for Canada. They may also tell you that once you get a visa, you will be able to apply to become a permanent resident (PR).

No one can guarantee you a visa or PR .

indian tourist visa application canada

Before a Canadian company can hire a foreign worker, they must try to hire someone in Canada. The company has to get a document from the government that gives them permission to hire a foreign worker. The document is called a labour market impact assessment (LMIA), and it costs the company 60,200 (CAN$1,000) for each worker they want to hire. The company must pay this fee .

If a job offer sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam . Research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real before you pay a visa agent to help you.

Learn more about working in Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

Canadian companies have to pay the fee for the labour market impact assessment (LMIA). The government does not let the worker pay the cost. Beware of companies, recruiters or agents who ask you to pay this fee. If the company does not comply with the requirements to hire a foreign worker, the LMIA could be revoked, and your visa could be cancelled.

If the LMIA is approved, your employer should give you a copy of the approval letter for you to include with your work permit application. You need the LMIA approval letter before you can apply for the work permit.

It could be a scam if

  • a recruiter charges you money to find a job Note: Honest companies pay recruiters to find workers, so you shouldn’t have to pay for a job offer .
  • you’re asked to pay money up front for the right to apply, the labour market impact assessment (LMIA), training, or supplies like tools or a uniform
  • a recruiter or employer promises that you can move to Canada and start working in a few weeks
  • the wages seem too high for the job or region Note: The Government of Canada Job Bank (opens in a new tab)   lists average wages by occupation and city. You can enter the city or postal code for the job and find its salary range.
  • the job description is vague (for example, location, duties, benefits)
  • no experience is required
  • no interview is required
  • a recruiter or employer promises that once you have a job, your family can move to Canada
  • permanent residence (PR) is guaranteed once you’re working in Canada Note: No one can guarantee you PR .

Many companies will post job openings on their website. If the position offered to you is not on the company’s website, it could be a scam. Ask your friends or family in Canada to research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real.

If you’re applying to study in Canada:

  • Make sure the school is a designated learning institution (DLI) .
  • Don’t apply for a study permit without an acceptance letter.
  • Always pay tuition fees directly to the school .
  • Check to see if your school has services for international students .

If you want to work in Canada after graduation, make sure you’re eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

Don’t let a scammer take your dream away .

Not all schools in Canada can accept international students . A designated learning institution (DLI) is a school that’s approved to host international students. If you want to study in Canada, make sure the school you’re applying to is on the designated learning institutions list (opens in a new tab)   .

Many schools have services to help international students learn about living in Canada, the city, weather, finding somewhere to live, health care, scholarships and many other things.

Not all designated learning institutions (DLIs) and not all programs of study make you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) . Review the DLI list (opens in a new tab)   to see which schools offer programs that make you eligible for a PGWP. Learn more about working in Canada after you graduate (opens in a new tab)   .

You may be getting scammed if a visa agent or student recruiter

  • tells you to apply for a student visa without an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada Note: You need the acceptance letter before you can apply for a student visa. The DLI will send the acceptance letter directly to you.
  • promises you a letter of acceptance from a DLI if you pay them Note: If someone makes that promise, they’re likely part of a scam. An honest school will assess your language and academic abilities before providing any admission documents.
  • tells you that they can get you a discounted tuition rate for a fee Note: Speak with the school directly to discuss fees.
  • asks you to pay money to apply for a scholarship or to guarantee that your scholarship is approved Note: Applying for a scholarship is usually free and no one can guarantee you will get one.
  • tells you that you can stay in Canada for much longer than the length of your study permit
  • tells you that all DLIs and programs of study can make you eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP)

Protect yourself and your family

Scammers want to take your hard-earned money and give you false promises of guaranteed visas or permanent residence (PR). Don’t be fooled: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

FAQs and a Complete Guide to Applying for an Indian Visa (for Canadians)

Guest Post by Melanie Schorr from www.melanieschorryoga.ca

2019 Update! 1 year online tourist, business and medical Indian eVisas are now available for citizens of 161 countries! Hooray!   Read my NEW post about how to get a 1 year Indian eVisa online!

Nearly all nationalities, including all Canadian citizens, need to apply for a visa before traveling to India . This can take a bit of time and forward planning, which means that applying for an Indian visa is an essential part of  planning any trip to India.  There are 2 main options for Indian visa for Canadians – you can send your passport off to apply for a longer term visa or apply online for an E visas which is valid for upto 60 days.

The process of applying for an Indian visa for Canadians can be quite frustrating and confusing so I thought I would write a step by step guide to make applying for your visa easier and I’ll go into full details about both types of visa in this post.

I have applied for an Indian visa at least 4 times, and every time I do it, it’s a little bit different, so I thought I would write a guide about the process of how to apply for a tourist visa to visit India. It is a frustrating process, but well worth it to be able to visit this incredible country!

Please bear in mind this is from the point of view of a Canadian passport holder and guidelines can change frequently and suddenly. Also, this is just from my experience and I am not an immigration professional) Requirements and processes for other nationalities are different – if you are from the UK see this post on how to apply for an Indian visa for UK citizens.    If you’re from the USA check out   How to apply for Indian tourist visa from the USA.   The process is also different for Canadians of Pakistani origin .

indian tourist visa application canada

So how do you get a visa to visit India?

Canadian passport holders  must apply for a visa before visiting India , even if applying for an E-Visa. It’s important to be aware that Indian tourist visas are  valid from the date of issue,  not the date of your entry to India. So make sure that you prepare in advance and that you start the application process so that your visa coincides with your travel dates – don’t apply too early or your visa could expire before the end of your trip.

Short term Indian visas – visa on arrival and e-visas

How to get an indian e visa for canadians.

The E-Visa is the quickest way to get a visa for India, but even though it has sometimes been described as a ‘visa on arrival’ you must still apply for the visa in advance before you travel.   The E-Visa is the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to apply for an Indian visa for Canadians but it does have a few limitations, like, for example, the amount of time you can spend there.

Citizens from 161 countries are eligible to apply online for an  E Tourist Visa to India , including Canada, USA, Australia, UK and Ireland, New Zealand and many European Countries.

At first the ETA was only valid for 30 days (1 month), but it the E Visas are valid for 60 days (2 months) . The catch is that you can only apply for an E-Visa twice per year and it is NOT extendable. The E-Visa costs USD $50 (about CDN $62) plus a small admin fee. The application process is fully online, and you can apply a minimum of 4 days before your arrival date in India.

The E-visa has three subcategories; e-Tourist Visa, e-Business Visa and e-Medical Visa. Double entry is permitted on E-Tourist Visa and E-Business Visa. Triple Entry will be permitted on E-Medical visa. You can enter India on an E Visa at 24 airports and 3 seaports; Cochin, Goa and Mangalore.

indian tourist visa application canada

How to apply for an Indian E Visa online

You can apply for an E Visa to India on  the government website here . Your visa will then be emailed to you, and a printed copy of it must be with you when you arrive in India . The visa will then be affixed to your passport at the airport when you arrive in India.

The ETA is not extendable or convertible and you can only apply for 2 ETVs in 1 year. As the process is fully online (you are not required to send off your passport and wait for 2 weeks for the visa to be processed) the E-Visa makes a quick holiday to India so much easier.

However, bear in mind that there is still quite a lot of paperwork to fill out and it can get confusing and you need to make sure the photo you upload meets the specific requirements. Plus, if you make a mistake on the forms you could be rejected and have to apply again and the fee for the visa and for processing of the application is non-refundable, even if the visa is not granted.

indian tourist visa application canada

To take the stress and hassle out of applying for your Indian visa let  iVisa  sort everything out for you.  They do charge a small service free but they offer a zero frustration policy and make the process simpler and easier to follow. They can process your application and send your E Visa via email in only 18 hours. They also have a window for arrival of 120 days meaning you can get your visa sorted well in advance of your trip but remember you still need a apply online no later than 4 days in advance of your arrival date to India.

However, if your parents or grandparents were born in Pakistan, sadly you’re  not eligible to get an E-Tourist Visa whatever your current nationality, so unfortunately you will have to apply for a normal Tourist Visa.

indian tourist visa application canada

Applying for a 6 month or 12 month Indian tourist visa in Canada with BLS

There is so much to see in India and its not a country you can rush through so if you can I would really recommend spending more than 1 or 2 months in India in which case an E Visa will not give you enough time.

If you want to travel in India for longer than 1 or 2  months then you will still need to apply for a visa by sending away your application and passport.

The Indian visa application process in Canada has been outsourced to BLS International Services . The website and instructions are pretty straightforward, although some may find applying for the visa a bit confusing and some of the information is out of date.

Read on and I’ll guide you through the process of applying for an Indian tourist visa with BLS International, or if you want to make the process easier for the longer visa then you can use an agency like   Visa HQ

Which Indian visa should I apply for?

Basically most Canadian citizens travel to India on a tourist visa  valid for 3 – 6 months.  You can get single, double or multiple entry, 3, 6 or 12 months. Tourist visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. You may as well apply for a  6 month or even 12 month multiple entry tourist visa  because the price and process for applying is still the same.

However, even on a 12 month visa you are still not allowed to spend more than 180 days (6 months) in India  in one go but you can leave for a day and come back without having to go through the hassle of applying again!

Tourist visas for India are only granted to foreigners who do not have a residence or occupation in India and whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives, etc. No other activity is permissible on a tourist visa. There are different visas for volunteering, studying, employment, business, research, journalism etc, which require more documents.

indian tourist visa application canada

Up until recently, the maximum tourist visa a Canadian National could get was 5 years, but a 10 year Tourist visa has recently been introduced. Canadians can now apply for a upto 5 year or upto 10 year multiple entry tourist or business visa for India.  Again there is a maximum stay of 180 days per visit.

Be aware that  the duration of visa granted is at the at the sole discretion of the Issuing Authority.  The High Commission of India do not always give you the exact length and entries of visa that you have asked for, so you never know what you’ve got until you receive your passport back. All visa fees are non-refundable even if your visa is rejected or the duration granted is shorter than what you asked for. Also, the validity of the visa begins from the date of issue by the High Commission of India and not from the date of travel on your application form.

For the best chance of getting the longer visa, it’s always best to apply in your home country. You can apply from places like Nepal, Sri Lanka or Bali but often they will only grant 3 month single entry visas, or sometimes even less.

How much does a tourist visa for India cost for Canadians?

A tourist visa for India up to 1 year costs CDN $153 for Canadian passport holders.

But then after you add on other processing fees and BLS International’s fee the total cost for applying for an Indian tourist visa adds up to  CDN $164.40 in total. You then have to add on the postage and the photos, which vary depending on where you live. The 10 year visa costs CDN $202 plus additional processing fees.

The fee is also non-refundable—even if your application is denied the fee is not refunded.

How to apply for an Indian visa by post or in person

When applying for an Indian visa, you need to start by filling out the form on the BLS International website.

The first task is to work out where to start the application and where to find the online application form, to save you the trouble here is the link . Click on this and then click on the red tab that says ‘ regular visa application ’

The first hurdle is to figure out is which ‘mission’ you select. All postal applications are only being accepted in Toronto, Ottawa or Vancouver, but if you did find it more convenient to attend an appointment there are several other offices across the country. You can find the application centre closest to you on their home page .

Then continue to fill out the  ridiculously long form  and there are a plethora of questions to be answered. They wanted to know everything from my religion to whether or not I had any visible identification marks. They also want to know the place of birth of mother and father and whether my grandparents were born in Pakistan, details of previous visits to India with the previous visa number and all the countries that I have visited in the last 10 years.

Photos required for the Indian Tourist Visa Application

The Indian visa application also requires 1 recent photo but it is a  different sized photo  to normal Canadian passport photos –  51mm x 51mm.  You can quite easily get these done in most photo shops, but it is recommended to do it at a BLS Centre.

You can also check the specifications and take a photo yourself and upload a photo to the application, but the photo specifications are very strict and the visa will be rejected and not refunded if the photo is wrong.

It’s a good idea to get some extra ones because you will need them if you want to get a sim card for your cell phone. See more on this (also overly complicated process) on  how to get a Sim Card in India

References for applying for an Indian Visa

The form also asks you for a reference in India – if you don’t have any friends in India you can use a hotel or tour company as a reference. If you haven’t booked a hotel yet (because you are still figuring out how to get a damn visa!?) you could always book provisionally on  Booking.com  and cancel or change the booking later.

Next you need to provide a reference in Canada – I always just use my Dad!

Once you have answered all the questions, confirm the details. It then gives you your application number – it’s a good idea to make a note of the application number in case the website crashes, because if you have the application number you can log back in. If you don’t, not you’ll have to start again.

Then you need to print off the application form. Make sure you sign it in the right places (on both pages) and attach the right size photos. You can find the photo specifications here; http://www.blsindia-canada.com/photo_spec.php

How to submit the Indian visa application

Click on the button to ‘make appointments and payments’ and select your mode of submission – choose to either make an appointment or send your application in by post.

If you are sending by post you must enclose a CERTIFIED CHEQUE to BLS International Services Canada Inc, which includes Visa Fee + 7.40 (BLS Service charge) + ($20 or $30 for Return courier fee within Province OR for outside province respectively). If you apply in person then you will need to make an appointment and you can pay by Debit card or in cash. No credit card payments are accepted!

Where to send your Indian visa application

Check you have everything:

  • Printed and signed application form
  • One 51cm x 51cm photo, with your signature on the bottom (or send 2 just in case)
  • Certified cheque with the visa fee
  • Certified cheque for processing and courier charges

Don’t  send it to the address on the top of your Indian visa application form – send it to the centre in your jurisdiction, which can be found here; https://www.blsindia-canada.com/contactus.php

How long does the Indian visa take to process?

Officially it states that the processing time for a Indian tourist visa for Canadians takes a  5 to 12 working days, but it takes more time if you are not a Canadian National .  It is advised to apply at least 15 days before you plan to travel to India in case of any delays.

You should get an email saying ‘a decision has made on your application … your processed application is ready for collection or courier’. Once you get this you can go and collect your passport or if applying by post then it should be back with you in the next few days after that.

You will not know until you open the post whether your visa has been granted or refused or if it has been granted for the full amount of time and number of entries you have asked for.

There used to rule that you were not permitted to re enter India within 2 months, ( even if your visa was still valid you had to wait 2 months) which made a quick trip to somewhere like Nepal more inconvenient. It was only possibly to re enter without the gap of 2 months if you submitted an itinerary for the whole trip and applied in advance for a permit to re-enter. Thankfully  a re-entry permit is no longer required  and that restriction has been lifted for Canadians.

indian tourist visa application canada

Also note that certain restricted areas including most of the states in the far  North East,  some border areas and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands still require special permits. The easiest way to obtain these is by going through a travel agency or on a tour.

Can you apply for an Indian visa outside of Canada or your country of residence?

It’s always better to apply for a visa in your home country or country of residence, but it is possible to obtain and Indian visa in neighbouring countries, like Nepal , Sri Lanka , Bali , Cambodia ,  Laos  and Myanmar , although since the introduction of the E-Visa this has become harder and some travellers have reported difficulties recently in obtaining Indian visas in Bangkok, Thailand or often only get single entry 3 month visas even if asked for multiple entry, 6 month visas. Now the E Visa is valid for 60 days and is much easier to obtain, so you might want to try that if applying for outside of Canada.

I actually recently applied for (and got) a tourist visa in Bangkok, but I lived there at the time and had a Thai business visa and work permit. BUT they only granted me a single entry 30 day visa, which meant I had to change my travel plans to accommodate this. I know many have been denied, but, to my knowledge, they did not have a long-term visa for Thailand. I think it’s only possible if you are a resident of Thailand so its better to apply for the E Visa.

As with everything in India really, the visa process requires a bit of persistence and patience but it will be worth it just make sure you plan ahead and get your Indian visa in good time when planning your trip to India.

Thank you so much. Going through the designate agents for the Indian Consulate here in Ottawa was hard. I gave up and followed the e-Visa route. I already got my Visa!

One note: when they say to “print” is not so. It generates a pdf file and your computer places it where you assign it. It took me a few “print” commands to understand this and find the file.

Yes it’s not easy applying for the Indian visa and there often seems to be glitches in the website. Glad you got your visa ok though and hope you have a good time in India 🙂

Hi, I have dual citizenship, French and Canadian. I travel around but officially based in France. Do you think i could get a 10 year tourist visa if i applied in Paris?

Hi Mallika, I’m not sure if Europeans can even get the 10 year tourist visa. You should check with you embassy in Paris.

Even if I hold a Canadian passport? I was thinking if I could do this Visa in the country I reside in?

' data-src=

Hi Mallika,

This is super helpful! But I already submitted by visa application while I’m studying in the states and somehow got “VAF” stamp, visa applied for. Have you ever gotten this before? I’m a little worried.

A Canada tourist visa typically allows for stays of up to 6 months per visit and can be valid for up to 10 years.

Multiple-entry visitor visas allow the holder to visit Canada multiple times, with each visit allowing a stay of up to six months, as long as the visa remains valid. These visas can be issued for up to 10 years, though the specific validity period is determined by the visa officer.

When applying for a Canada tourist visa from India, it’s essential to understand the various fees involved. Here’s a detailed look at the Canada tourist visa cost for Indian citizens:

To be eligible to pay the maximum fee of CAN$500 family members must all apply at the same time and same place and the children must qualify as dependents.

The Canada tourist visa fees for Indian applicants are non-refundable and subject to change. Additional fees may apply depending on factors such as foreign exchange fluctuations, courier delivery charges (if availed), etc. Always check the latest fee details before applying to ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Understanding these Canada tourist visa embassy fees will help you prepare better for your application process and avoid any unexpected costs.

The Canada tourist visa processing time can vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for and the specific circumstances of your application. Generally, Canada visa processing time for Indians can range between 50 to 70 working days.

  • If you have submitted your visa application online directly on the IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) website, please note that status updates related to your visa application can only be obtained from the IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) website
  • If you have submitted your application at the VFS Visa Application Centre, you can Track Canada visa using the “Track your application” feature. Simply visit the tracking page and enter the Tracking ID number mentioned on the receipt received from the Visa Application Centre, and your Date of Birth.

If you want to stay longer in Canada as a visitor, you need to apply for a visitor record. This document extends your permission to stay and sets a new date by which you must leave Canada. It's important to apply for a visitor record before your current status expires.

However, having a visitor record doesn't automatically guarantee that you can leave Canada and return. If you plan to travel outside Canada or the United States, you'll need a valid entry document like a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to come back to Canada.

When applying for a Canada visa, knowing what could potentially lead to denial is crucial for strengthening your application and boosting the likelihood of getting approved. Here are some important considerations:

  • Lack of Proper Documentation: All Canada visit visa or tourist visa documents you submit must be authentic, complete, and satisfactory. Submitting incorrect or misleading information can cause your application to be rejected immediately and may lead to potential bans on future applications.
  • Lack of Funds: Inadequate proof of financial stability and inability to cover the cost of your stay can lead to rejection.
  • Weak Ties to India: Canada authorities may question your intentions to return to India, if you cannot demonstrate strong ties, such as family, property, or employment in India, and, hence, may reject your visa application.
  • Questionable Travel Record: A history of overstaying visas in other countries could be seen as a red flag, suggesting a risk of not adhering to Canada’s visa regulations.
  • Intentions Under Scrutiny: Not being able to convincingly explain the reason for your visit and its consistency with your planned activities might arouse suspicion. For example, expressing plans to work on a visa that doesn't allow employment could result in denial.

Global Visa Wait Times

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

Fewer visa approvals, increased entry refusals: What Indians must know about Canada's new immigration rules

Canada is pulling the reins on immigrants with fewer visa approvals, increased entry refusals, and the abrupt end of the temporary public policy.

Canada has been turning away foreigners faster than ever - in the first seven months of 2024, on an average nearly 3,700 foreigners were turned away by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). That’s a 20% increase on year on year basis. In July alone, 5,853 foreign travellers were refused entry including students, workers and tourists, the most since January 2019, according to CBSA data. Even those with valid visa and official documents were turned away by the border force.

Canada’s immigration department is approving fewer visas. The visa refusal rates have also gone up drastically - in January, February, May and June 2024, more applications were refused than approved, according to immigration department data.

Canada’s immigration department is approving fewer visas. The visa refusal rates have also gone up drastically - in January, February, May and June 2024, more applications were refused than approved, according to immigration department data. Visa refusal in June was the highest since the the height of the Covid pandemic.

The number of approved study and work permits also dropped from multi-year highs in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

Data by national data collection agency Statistics Canada reveals that the number of immigrants arriving in Canada reached 468,817 in July of 2024. The majority of foreigners to Canada come from India, China and the Philippines. Americans are the fifth most common foreign-born resident group in Canada.

CBSA: The Canada Border Service is handled by the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) that is responsible for immigration, border enforcement, and customs. It is important to note that all individuals crossing the border/entering Canada will be subject to screening by an Immigration officer. Entry into Canada depends upon how much an individual can convince an immigration officer on their intent of visit and assurance of return once the duration of permit to stay, expires.

What to do if you disagree with CBSA’s decision of denying entry? If you, as an individual or business, disagree with a CBSA enforcement action or trade decision, you may want it reviewed. You have that right, the First Steps including various forms and letters will guide you through the process. To expedite the initiation of your appeal, submit your request using the Online Appeal Form and complete each field accordingly.

In 2023, there were nearly 3,500 such requests for a review of an enforcement action or trade decision (Source: CBSA).

If application for a visitor visa was refused, should you apply again immediately.

No. If your application was refused, applying again with the same information, even with an immigration or travel agent, will not change this decision.

Your application may be refused because:

• the official deciding your case has reason to believe you’ll stay in Canada beyond your authorised stay

• you’re inadmissible to Canada.

Applying a second time will not change this decision. It will only cost you more money and increase processing times for other applicants. However, if your situation changes, you may apply again with your new information.

Hiring an immigration representative also won’t change any previous decision on your application. If anyone tells you you’ll have a better chance on your second application because they’re representing you, they’re not being truthful and are likely looking to take your money. (Source: IRCC).

Remember: No one can guarantee you a job or a visa to Canada. Only immigration officers in Canada, at Canadian embassies, high commissions and consulates can decide to issue a visa.

Can one appeal after temporary resident visa refusal? There is no formal appeal process if your application for a temporary resident visa is refused. Should you wish to re-apply, you should do so only if your situation has changed substantively or you have significant new information to submit (Source: IRCC).

End of Temporary public policy: Effective immediately, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has ended a temporary public policy that allowed visitors to apply for a work permit from within Canada. The temporary policy was set to expire on February 28, 2025 but was terminated last week with immediate effect.

The IRCC, however, will continue to process applications submitted before August 28, 2024 under the policy.

The IRCC introduced the policy in August 2020 to help visitors who were unable to leave the country due to COVID-19 pandemic-related travel restrictions. Under the policy, visitors in Canada could apply for a work permit without having to leave the country. In addition, foreign nationals who had held a work permit in the previous 12 months but who changed their status in Canada to ‘visitor’ could apply to work legally in Canada while waiting for a decision on their new work permit application.

If you have a temporary resident visa, can you leave Canada and come back?

Single-entry temporary resident visa

• If you have a single-entry temporary resident visa, you will generally need a new single-entry visa to come back to Canada.

• You can request to return to Canada on your original single-entry temporary resident visa, if:

◦ you will only visit the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon; and

◦ you will return to Canada before the end of your approved stay in Canada.

Multiple-entry temporary resident visa

• Yes, you can come back to Canada, if you have a multiple-entry temporary resident visa and it has not expired.

Expired temporary resident visa

• You can request to return to Canada on your original temporary resident visa, even if it is expired, if:

If you visit any country other than those listed above, you will need a new temporary resident visa.

In recent years, Canada has seen a sharp increase of temporary residents admitted to the country. As of 2024, there are a total of 2.5 million temporary residents in Canada. This is up from nearly one million in 2021, according to figures by national data collection agency Statistics Canada. A majority of temporary residents - around 54% - in 2021 had a work permit. International students with a permit solely to study in Canada represented 22% of temporary residents, and asylum claimants accounted for 15% (Source: Statistics Canada).
