Adventure and Action Punta Cana Excursions

Some of my favorite Punta Cana excursions are in this section. They’re a great way to break the lazy beach days by adding some adrenaline-infused activities to your vacation.

You don’t need to be a fitness maniac to join these tours. However, your physical level should allow you to trek for half an hour in the sweaty tropical jungle and climb a flight of stairs for most of these Punta Cana activities.

Are you ready to get a little dusty? Then, let’s explore the best adventure and action Punta Cana tours !

1. Zip Lining over the Jungle

Zip Line over the Jungle

Wanna see the jungle like Tarzan?

The zip-lining Punta Cana excursions allow you to fly over the treetops of the Dominican jungle. The best place to soar above Punta Cana’s lush tropical forests is the island’s first zip-lining course.

The expert canopy guides will not only ensure your safety. They’ll also provide fascinating insights into the surrounding jungle as you navigate from one platform to the next.

The longest cable extends 800 m / 2,600 ft. above a river, giving you 50 seconds of pure thrill.

The whole course features 16 platforms and 12 zip lines, including the two longest lines in the Caribbean.

Raise your adrenaline levels and enjoy the incredible views of the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range from platforms built within centenary trees. All while securely clipped to the lines.

🎒 What to Bring : Mosquito repellent to keep those nasty bugs away.

📍 How to Book : Join the tour of the awesome 12 zip-line cables course via this link . Pick-up service from your hotel is included.

2. Riding a Buggy

Buggy Tours Are Some Of The Best Things To Do In Punta Cana

Feel the speed of the open buggies or quads , go off the main street and onto the dirt roads through Dominican villages, plantations, and farms.

Reach your destination on a secluded beach, take a dip into the water, and then head back to your hotel to wash off the dust and relax your bones.

✔️ Tip : After a break, don’t try to sit on your seat before cooling it with a splash of water. The dark seats attract the sun and heat up quickly.

🎒 What to Bring : A bandana or a scarf to protect your face from the sand and dust, a pair of (sun)glasses to protect your eyes, and plenty of water.

📍 How to Book : Use this link to book the best buggy tour in Punta Cana .

3. Parasailing over Punta Cana

Parasailing in Punta Cana

Elevate your vacation with a heart-pumping parasailing experience.

You’ll reach almost 60 m / 200 ft. and enjoy a staggering view of Punta Cana’s coastline. Feel the breeze as you look out to the crystal waters and pristine beaches of the Dominican Republic.

✔️ Tip : Try to relax your body into the harness to fully enjoy the flight. Secure your sunglasses and anything that might fall out of your pockets.

🎒 What to Bring : Wear comfortable clothes.

📍 How to Book : Use this link to book your parasailing flight .

4. Learning to Kite-Surf

Opposed to other surf types, you don’t need strong winds or big waves to ride a kite surf.

According to instructors, most people need about 20 hours of training to learn to kite surf.

You’ll start with a smaller kite at the beach and move to a larger one once you’ve learned how to control it. Then, go into the water and feel the waves under your board and the power of the wind in your kite.

When you’re ready, make a few jumps in the air, and don’t forget to ask someone to record it for you.

🎒 What to Bring : Plenty of sun protection to avoid a nasty sunburn.

📍 How to Book : You can book lessons or rent kitesurfing gear at the KBS School .

5. Learning to Scuba Dive

Underwater

A lot of resorts offer courses for scuba diving certificates. You’ll start your practice at the resort’s swimming pool and then go out into the open waters.

Don’t neglect the rules and instructions, as diving can be detrimental to your health when done wrong.

And if you already have a certificate, go directly for a fun scuba dive in Punta Cana !

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll be provided with the gear, so you’ll only need your beach essentials.

📍 How to Book : Check if your hotel offers scuba diving lessons. And if you already have your certificate, join this ocean adventure .

Multiday Trips from Punta Cana

A couple of destinations in the Dominican Republic, such as the amazing Samaná, call for a multiday trip from Punta Cana .

You can either join an organized tour or take care of the logistics yourself. I’ve done both, and I’ve enjoyed the self-paced option way more.

Let’s see what multiday Punta Cana excursions are available.

7. Taking a Road Trip

Road Tripping Dominican Republic

If you’ve read this post carefully now, you might already have a plan for what you want to visit and explore.

So should you rent a car and just do it?

Hell, yeah!

There are no Punta Cana excursions that will fit everything you want to see and do on your visit to the tropical paradise.

Don’t limit yourself to just the things to do in Punta Cana. Venture away from the crowds and create your own adventure. My best suggestion is to visit Samana Peninsula at your own pace.

🎒 What to Bring : Navigation, cash, and a tank full of gas. Some Dominican roads are in poor condition, so my advice is to rent an SUV with full coverage.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore any destination on a road trip is by renting your own wheels. Compare the best deals from Discover Cars .

Beach and Sea Tours in Punta Cana

Macao Beach - Dominican Republic

The Punta Cana beaches are the top reason you came to the Dominican Republic, right?

So, leave your resort and visit more than just the sand stretch in front of your hotel! These beach and sea Punta Cana excursions are worth leaving your comfy sunbed.

Let me prove that to you in this section.

8. Visiting Saona Island

Sailing to Saona Island

Embark on a catamaran adventure to Saona Island. This is the Dominican Republic’s best-selling tour. When you arrive at the idyllic Saona Island with its palm-lined, white-sand beaches and mesmerizing turquoise waters, you’ll quickly understand why.

Spend the day chilling on the lounge chairs, splashing in the natural swimming pool, or sunbathing on the pristine beach. Enjoy the delicious local cuisine and unlimited drinks from the bar before heading back.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack your beach essentials and don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

📍 How to Book : Catamaran tour to Saona Island .

9. Sailing to Isla Catalina

Sailing to Catalina Island

Embark on a full-day snorkeling adventure to Catalina Island. Explore the vibrant underwater world with a Padi-certified dive team. Snorkel at The Wall , a mesmerizing site suitable for both beginners and seasoned snorkelers.

Encounter vibrant sea creatures like corals, octopuses, and lionfish. After snorkeling, head to Catalina Island’s private beach for a feast. Try the catch of the day and lounge on the beach with a drink from the open bar.

On the way back, enjoy the stunning sunset.

✔️ Tip : Apply sunscreen before diving into the turquoise waters to avoid sunburns.

🎒 What to Bring : Don’t forget essentials like sun protection and a towel. Bring a waterproof camera to capture the spectacular underwater world.

📍 How to Book : Book your Catalina snorkeling tour here .

10. Beach Hopping near Punta Cana

Secluded Beach - Playa Limon

Punta Cana and Bavaro offer two of the most amazing, long-stretched Dominican Republic beaches . However, they are quite touristy and crowded in the peak season.

So, my best tip for your beach vacation is to rent a car and explore the coastline north of Punta Cana. You’ll discover several breathtaking, secluded Dominican beaches that feel surreal to explore.

Arm yourself with enough adventure spirit, pack plenty of water and snacks, and don’t forget your beach essentials! Keep in mind that not all beaches you’ll encounter will have a lifeguard or any facilities.

🎒 What to Bring : Sun protection, water, and snacks are a must for a beach-hopping day.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore as many awesome Dominican beaches as possible is by renting your own wheels. Compare the best deals from Discover Cars .

11. Offshore Snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea

The coral reefs around Hispaniola Island are spectacular. Hop on a boat that will take you to one of the amazing underwater spots.

Watch, but do not touch, the colorful corals and fishes.

✔️ Tip : Be careful when choosing your tour. Some of these Punta Cana excursions consist of more drinking and partying than snorkeling.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack plenty of sun protection and your beach essentials. The best way to prevent a nasty sunburn is to wear a swim T-shirt and a bandana.

📍 How to Book : I recommend this awesome private catamaran cruise if you’re traveling in a group.

12. Taking a Boat Tour

Wondering what to do in Punta Cana? Take a Boat Tour - Snorkelling and Party

In Punta Cana, you’ll find boat tours for every taste.

You can party, drink, and meet other vacationers. You can watch the coral reef from the safety of your boat through a glass bottom. You can go fishing. Or even sailing.

Whatever your perfect day at sea looks like, I’m sure you’ll find a boat tour to make it happen :-)

🎒 What to Bring : Sun protection is a muse but also bring a long-sleeved shirt or a hoodie. The wind at sea may bring you chills even in the tropical heat.

📍 How to Book : My recommended boat tour includes swimming with sharks and stingrays! You can book it here .

13. Doing Some Sports

Kite

A lot of hotels and resorts offer a variety of sports at their beaches for free or for a small fee.

These might include bodyboarding, beach volleyball, kayaking, football, yoga, or exercising.

You can also do exercises on your own, take a long beach walk, or jog at the beach at sunrise.

And in the evenings, don’t miss the chance to learn some Bachata and Merengue moves, so you can impress your friends back home the next time you go dancing.

The Dominican Republic is also known for its perfect golf courses. If that’s your sport, you’ll surely find a perfect spot to practice your shots around Punta Cana.

🎒 What to Bring : Whatever sport you decide to do, make sure to put on enough sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

📍 How to Book : Ask at your hotel’s reception for the available options or wander the beach looking for local vendors.

Breathtaking Nature Excursions near Punta Cana

Nature Excursions Punta Cana

Deep caves with incredible limestone formations, wildlife-rich lagoons, and mesmerizing views over the coast are just a stone-throw away from Punta Cana.

If exploring on your own, these Punta Cana excursions in nature might take a little bit of planning and research, but the effort is well worth it. You’ll have the advantage of admiring nature’s beauty without other tourists.

14. Watching the Wildlife at the Lagoons

Visit the mangroves at Laguna Limón or Laguna Redonda to watch the birds in their habitat. Both lagoons are protected reserves.

You can hire a boat or rent a kayak on the spot. Explore the mangroves slowly to avoid disturbing the wildlife.

Local guides will give you all the information you need about the rural fishing communities, the lagoons, and the surrounding flora and fauna. They’ll also help you spot tropical birds, like herons and egrets, to make this a unique experience.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack a mosquito repellent to keep the feisty bugs off your skin. Use sun protection and stay hydrated.

📍 How to Book : Arrange your transportation by hiring a taxi or renting a car . Book a tour of the lagoons when you get there.

15. Viewing the World from above at Montaña Redonda

Montana Redonda - Hiking in Punta Cana

Did you know that you can go hiking in Punta Cana? Well, not exactly  in but just a few kilometres away.

If you’ve rented an SUV , you can drive right to the top of the 600 m / 1,969 ft. high Montaña Redonda . If not, you’ll have to climb all the way up. The ascend is not an easy one, as the road is very steep.

However, the 360° view from the top is extremely rewarding. On one side you’ll see Laguna Redonda and on the other – Laguna Limón and Playa Limón in the distance.

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll find a small picnic area at the top, so make sure to bring some provisions for a picnic.

📍 How to Book : You can enjoy the best panorama of the Punta Cana coastline by joining this tour .

16. Exploring Limestone Caves

Los Tres Ojos Cave Dominican Republic

The limestone caves Cueva de las Maravillas and Los Tres Ojos are both close to Punta Cana and Bavaro.

In Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders), you’ll see around 500 Taino wall paintings and engravings in black and red. The highlight of the cave is the Water Mirror Gallery, where the waters of the artificial lake reflect the beautiful ceiling of the cave.

The other cave close to Punta Cana, Los Tres Ojos , is an open-air cave formation. As the name suggests, it consists of three lakes, called eyes.

An underground river supplies water to the lakes. Stalactites and stalagmites surround them. Their depth remains unexplored.

✔️ Tip : Swimming in the lakes is not allowed.

🎒 What to Bring : Sturdy shoes with good grip will come in handy.

📍 How to Book : Some tours to Santo Domingo offer a stop at one of the caves. But if you want to visit them independently, I suggest you rent a car .

17. Getting Wet at the Waterfalls

Punta Cana Waterfalls - Salto De Socoa

There are no Punta Cana waterfalls directly located in the tourist area.

The nearest waterfalls from Punta Cana are around 2:30 h drive away. Still, if you decide to visit Salto De Socoa or Salto La Jalda , you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view and a refreshing dip in the waters.

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll need water shoes and mosquito repellent for this tour.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore these waterfalls is on your own. You can do so by renting a car .

Exploring Dominican Everyday Life in Punta Cana

One of my favorite activities when traveling is observing the everyday life of the locals. Unfortunately, not many Punta Cana excursions offer an authentic glimpse into Dominican life.

Organized tours from Punta Cana usually include a visit to Santo Domingo, La Romana, or a short stop at a plantation. But if you want to experience these places deeper, you better don’t join a group.

Instead, hire a taxi or rent a car, talk to locals on the street, sit at a cafe, and observe the routine of the Dominicans.

Below, you’ll find my recommended authentic experiences near Punta Cana.

18. Roaming the Vibrant Capital Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic

Walk the cobblestoned streets of Zona Colonial , the old town. Visit a museum or two, and enjoy medieval and Renaissance art.

Admire the 16th-century buildings and the city’s architectural gem – the cathedral Santa María la Menor. One of my favorite facts about the Dominican Republic is that it was the first built in the New World.

Discover the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus’ son. Don’t miss the captivating exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, showcasing contemporary Dominican art, and providing a glimpse into the city’s cultural heritage.

🎒 What to Bring : Wear sturdy, comfy shoes as you’ll be walking on cobbled streets a lot.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore Santo Domingo is by joining this awesome tour from Punta Cana .

19. Visiting the Laid Back Higuey

Higuey was founded in the 16 th century. The Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Altagracia dominates the city’s landscape and can be seen from afar.

Experience the vibrant local culture by exploring the bustling market. Colors, aromas, and lively exchanges will show you the everyday life of Higuey.

Don’t forget to visit the Museo de La Altagracia to dive into the city’s cultural heritage and artistic legacy. Wrap up your day in Higuey with a stroll through its charming streets, and observe colonial-era architecture and vibrant local life.

20. Exploring the Diverse Hato Mayor

Hato Mayor

Hato Mayor del Rey (King’s Great Herd) is a rural city, founded in 1520.

The road to the city will take you through small villages, plantations, and farmland. Watch everyday life as you pass by simple and colorful houses with the laundry hanging directly on the house fence.

Once you reach Hato Mayor, find the beautiful city center and mingle with the locals in the gorgeous park.

21. Visiting the Surprising La Romana

Immerse yourself in the unexpected charm of La Romana, the heart of the sugar industry.

Wander through the downtown area, where the striking Art Deco tower of the town hall stands tall. Just a short stroll away, encounter El Obelisco, a captivating miniature reproduction of the Washington Monument. Vibrant murals depicting the rich tapestry of Taino culture and contemporary Dominican themes adorn its sides.

Continue exploring, and you’ll uncover La Romana’s unique blend of history, art, and culture at every corner.

22. Driving Through Picturesque Dominican Villages

Village Life - Laundry

Start the day early in the morning in a rental or a taxi and try to visit as many Dominican villages as possible. Take the highway, and every now and then exit it to follow the bumpy roads through the countryside.

Most buildings you’ll see are colorful simple sheds with laundry hanging in front of the door. Small yards with several plants and trees, and the friendly faces of the Dominicans round the picture.

Try to order lunch in Spanish, as outside the resorts and tourist areas most people don’t speak English. Sit and enjoy the simple but delectable food while watching the everyday activities of the Dominicans.

Note that none of the organized tours I’ve seen include this kind of experience. However, you can easily build your own Punta Cana itinerary .

🎒 What to Bring : Take some cash and fill up your tank. Pack enough water and some snacks. Bring your beach essentials if you decide to visit a beach after seeing the countryside.

📍 How to Book : Renting a car from Discover Cars is the best way to explore the vibrant Dominican villages.

23. Visiting Plantations in the Countryside

A visit to the countryside to see the plantations is one of the coolest Punta Cana excursions to make.

The tour will take you to coffee, cacao, and sugar cane plantations. Taste sugar cane, fresh fruits, mamajuana, and try handmade cigars. Learn about the importance of these plantations for Dominicans.

Afterward, you’ll meet a local farmer’s family, see their home, learn about their work, and try typical dishes. Finally, you’ll pass by a rural school, greet kids, and learn about the Dominican educational system.

📍 How to Book : You can book this immersive tour and explore plantations, farms, and country life .

24. Enjoying the Nightlife of Punta Cana

Punta Cana is packed with nightclubs and bars.

  • Learn to dance Merengue and Bachata or simply watch the Dominicans do it.
  • Go to a show or visit the one-of-a-kind  nightclub in a cave – Imagine Punta Cana .
  • Join a bonfire beach party with live music.
  • Enjoy the Caribbean Pride. The hottest and most luxurious pride celebration in the Caribbean takes place in September. During the rest of the year, you can check what other colorful events you can join in this comprehensive gay Punta Cana travel guide .

25. Shopping for Local Goods

Cigars Factory

You can bring home several great souvenirs from Punta Cana. Here are some ideas.

  • Cigars : even if you’re a non-smoker like me, puffing a flavored cigar is a great experience.
  • Rum : the best brands, according to locals, are Ron Barceló and Brugal. Ask for the extra añejo (aged). You’ll thank me ;-)
  • Coffee : quality and price ranges vary. I was happy with the supermarket coffee, but I’m sure the super-expensive gourmet brands are even better. Not sure if their price is worth it, though.
  • Cosmetics : natural cocoa butter face creams for a couple of cents each are a great bargain and something both useful and good for your skin.
  • Jewellery with amber or larimar stones : while you can find amber elsewhere, the Dominican Republic is the only producer of larimar stones. If the sky blue stones are your color, get a nice piece of jewelry to remember your trip.

As in other touristy destinations, avoid shopping at souvenir shops. You can find coffee, rum, and cosmetics at supermarkets. For cigars and jewelry, find a factory tour. This way, you’ll be certain to buy from the source and avoid scams.

Keep in mind that proper storage is extremely important, especially for cigars. Don’t ever buy from someone at the beach. Even if the quality of the cigars is good, they weren’t stored properly and are way too dry, making them a total waste of money.

📍 How to Book : Your accommodation will most probably have contacts with factories near you. The tour of that factory is usually complimentary. You’ll learn a lot about the production process and can purchase souvenirs at manufacturer prices.

Travel Tips to Best Enjoy Your Punta Cana Excursions

Secluded Beach - Playa Limon

How to find the best excursions in Punta Cana and what is the most convenient way to book them?

Here are a few tips:

  • Check what activities your hotel offers for free . Usually, these are factory and shopping tours.
  • Check what tours you can book directly at the beach . You’ll save yourself the transfer time. These Punta Cana excursions are usually boat tours and water activities.
  • Compare tour prices AND what’s included in the tour.
  • Ask other vacationers what they paid and if they recommend a tour.
  • Ask the hotel staff, e.g. your favorite bartender or waiter , for recommendations.
  • For a fixed price, you can hire a taxi for the day or for several hours. You can find a price table in front of your hotel.
  • Rent a car . A big, safe car. Pay for full-cover insurance. Drivers in Punta Cana and the rest of the Dominican Republic are relentless. Road accidents happen all the time.
  • Search and book directly online . Read the reviews of other travelers.

living punta cana tours

Punta Cana Tours was founded by 3 normal guys who all shared a dream of making a living in the Dominican Republic. Easier said than done!

One way tickets to Paradise

Garry arrived from Haiti in 2005, TJ from New York in 2006 and Ken from Anguila in 2008; each of us with two suitcases and a dream of living full time in the Caribbean.

By late 2010, that Caribbean dream was pretty grim for TJ and Ken. After years of working together at  dr1.com  (a local English language tourism website) and just scraping by, Ken returned to the U.S. to be with his ailing father and TJ took a 6-month contract job for the Dominican Ministry of Tourism – in London of all places!

Garry, on the other hand, fared a bit better. Working his way up the Punta Cana tour operator ranks, he went from Transport Guide to Airport Manager for Sunwing, a major Canadian vacation company. Making good money but regularly working 12 hour days and nights, Garry was exhausted.

A Caribbean Dream

Garry had started a small tour operator side gig, in 2007, he named Caribbean Dream (perfect name for our story huh?). TJ and Ken knew of Caribbean Dream too. Over the years they’d helped Garry try and market his business on  dr1.com .

But in early 2011, while working in London for the Dominican Ministry of Tourism, TJ had an idea – to partner up! He was meeting lots of travel agents interested in selling the DR, Garry had his side gig tour operator in Punta Cana and Ken, the tech guy, could put our entire idea online.

A leap of faith and a stroke of luck

So, Garry quit his big job, TJ turned down a full-time position with the Ministry of Tourism, Ken made peace with the passing of his father…and we got to work.

We started selling our tours 100% online. At the time, tours were sold mainly in hotel lobbies with a tour rep. We wish we could say we knew what we were doing! But we tripped over an opportunity and Caribbean Dream grew into one of the most trusted tour operators in Punta Cana; pioneering online sales for excursions and transport.

Punta Cana Tours

During the pandemic we re-branded the company name to match the web domain we purchased during our humble beginnings in 2011 ( puntacanatours.com ).

Fortunately, the pandemic is over; travel is back and Punta Cana is back! And we’re still TJ, Ken and Garry ready to answer your questions and offer up an unforgettable experience in our tiny corner of the Caribbean.

Thank you for reading our story and we thank you for choosing us. What a ride it’s been and we’re just getting started!

Top Rated Punta Cana Adventures

Each person defines adventures as something different. While for some people it is already an adventure traveling to the Dominican Republic, others are craving pure wilderness, local experiences, adrenalin-rushing activities or athletic performances. This is why this Punta Cana adventure guide covers both:

– Guided excursions and activities , which are true adventures (and not just “adventures of your lifetime” in terms of the marketing speech) – DIY adventures for seasoned travelers and experienced outdoor freaks – Furthermore, we also include some hybrid adventures, which are the best of both worlds

If you don’t want to read until the end, here is our recommendation for the best adventure in Punta Cana in each category:

The 5 best Punta Cana adventure excursions

Let’s start with the best Punta Cana adventure tours and excursions. Those can be seen as all-inclusive adventures, as you get picked up at your resort, get dropped off again and enjoy full services such as guides, transport and equipment (if necessary). Those adventure excursions are perfect for those who’re looking for some adrenaline-rushing activities without foregoing the safety and security of an organized excursion in Punta Cana . Let’s have a look at the 5 best Punta Cana adventures when heading on an organized tour.

Zipline Adventure in Punta Cana

One of the most popular Punta Cana adventure tours is ziplining. As you can read here , there are various Zipline adventures in Punta Cana , among them the one at Bavaro Adventure Park Punta Cana * or the canopy adventure Punta Cana with Bavaro Runners *. However, in my opinion, the most adventurous zipline in Punta Cana is the one at Scape Park Punta Cana .

The reason for the Scape Park zipline being the most adventurous one is that it not only includes 8 cables, but it also has a short Via Ferrata included. Furthermore, you can enjoy a hammock zipline as well as a water zipline (in addition to the 8 cables) which are great fun and will guarantee long-lasting memories.

What’s unique about ziplining is that you feel like you’re flying, which is already an adventure in itself. Add the perfect Punta Cana scenery, some beautiful ocean views and a pretty quick speed when ziplining (at least at some of the cables) and you have the perfect ingredients for your zipline adventure in Punta Cana .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: ziplining in general is a great organized and safe adventure + this particular zipline offers water fun and hammock ziplines. Pricing: find the best prices for ziplining here * Further information: the best ziplines in Punta Cana – your canopy adventure in paradise

Ziplining Tour in Punta Cana at Bavaro Adventure Park

Parasailing

Let’s continue with another Punta Cana adventure you can have up in the air: parasailing. This is particularly perfect when you don’t want to leave your resort in Punta Cana for too long as this is a rather quick adventure. In case you don’t know what’s parasailing, that’s the activity where you start on the boat, get spanned under a kind of parachute and later fly up into the air once the boat is moving. However, you are secured with a robust cable, hence you can enjoy your time up there safe and sound.

When considering a parasailing adventure in Punta Cana, there are two great things about it: first of all, you can enjoy a similar feeling flying as it is with ziplining, even though it is not as quick. Second, the views of the coastline, the white beaches in Punta Cana and the several all-inclusive resorts are simply stunning, hence you will have a great time in the air.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: a rather quick adventure, but seeing Punta Cana from above is breathtaking Pricing: find the best prices for parasailing here *

Hiking adventure in Punta Cana

If you’re looking for a nature adventure in Punta Cana but don’t want to head on some of the DIY adventures mentioned further below, a hiking trip in Punta Cana might be the right thing for you. Considering that you might stay in your resort for most of the time, such a trip into nature will be a great adventure to explore the local wildlife, see the lush vegetation and get to know some of the secrets the Dominican Republic has to offer. Particularly as this excursion is mostly done in very small groups, you can also fully immerse into the local nature.

If you book this recommended hiking excursion * as your personal Punta Cana adventure, you will head to the Anamuya Mountains and have an approximate 2-3 hour hike at a relaxed pace, hence it is suitable for nearly all kinds of travelers. Following some farmers’ trails and unmarked hiking paths, your local guide will explain everything about the plants, fruits and smaller wildlife you’ll see along your way.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: having a little workout and getting immersed in nature is a great and unique combination Pricing: find the best prices for hiking tours here * Further information: Hiking in Punta Cana – the best excursions and trails

The hiking trail in the Cordillera Oriental to Loma Linda

Xtreme Buggy Adventure Punta Cana

There are many Punta Cana buggy tours out there, but only a few of them offer a true adventure in Punta Cana. Particularly the cheap so-called dune buggy adventures are more a combination of some decent off-road driving fun and shopping stuff, hence it is not necessarily recommended to book those tours if looking for a proper adventure.

Much better are some of the REAL buggy adventures, which are also described in our Punta Cana Buggy Guide . One of them is the so-called Punta Cana Xtreme Buggy Adventure *, which takes you in very small groups out through the untouched countryside of Punta Cana. Particularly during the full-day tour, you see authentic local villages far away from Punta Cana, unspoiled countryside and pristine beaches where usually not a single tourist is going – this is a true Dominican Republic adventure.

When booking the Xtreme Buggy Adventure Punta Cana it is important to know how to drive with a manual stick shift.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: pretty adventurous full-day buggy excursion with areas where no other tour is heading to Pricing: find the best prices for Xtreme buggy adventure * Further information: The best dune buggy adventure tours in Punta Cana (Tested and hand-picked)

Buggy Excursion in Punta Cana with Xtreme Buggy Adventures

If you don’t know how to drive a manual stick shift, you can also opt for an ATV Adventure in Punta Cana. The general idea is similar to the dune buggy adventure , but you are driving a sturdy ATV along the off-roads of Punta Cana. It pays off as well to check which of the Punta Cana ATV/Polaris adventure tours you’re booking, as some are just following the paths along the tourist trails.

One of the great ATV adventures in Punta Cana is the Flintstone Buggy Adventure . This tour leads you into the unpopulated backcountry of Punta Cana, where you’re speeding through unpaved roads, along uncleared scrubland, admiring how drastically Punta Cana is changing within a few miles after leaving the resort area. You’ll also visit a typical local Colmado in the countryside (which is not that adventurous though) and a pretty cool cave system.

Particularly the many trails off the beaten track makes this tour a great Punta Cana adventure and it is combined with some great learnings too.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: reasonably priced ATV adventure tour in Punta Cana off-the-beaten-track and with interesting local insights Pricing: find the best prices for the ATV adventure here * Further information: The best dune buggy adventure tours in Punta Cana (Tested and hand-picked)

The 5 best Punta Cana DIY adventures

Are you a true adventure lover and can’t sit still for just a few minutes? Are you always looking for the most extreme experiences when on holiday? Do you want to know the hidden gems in the east of the Dominican Republic? Then the following DIY adventures in Punta Cana are for you. All involve a certain kind of organization before your trip, but I’ll try to explain them in detail as much as possible. Furthermore, most of these Punta Cana adventures require a rental car . If you haven’t booked one so far, check out this article about the best rental car companies in Punta Cana .

Saona Overnight Adventure

If I would have to pick one, the Saona Overnight Tour might be my favorite adventure in Punta Cana. You might know Isla Saona as one of the most popular excursions in Punta Cana , but this 2-day adventure is definitely different as you hardly will see any other tourists during these days.

The basis of this Punta Cana adventure tour is the small village of Mano Juan at beautiful and paradisical Saona Island . While most day trips only head to the easily accessible beach on Saona, Mano Juan is a bit further away and therefore only receives a small trickle of tourists who are heading every day to the island. It is also the only village on the island and is home to only three guesthouses. The most recommendable of them is Saona Beach House *.

The unique thing about this adventure is that hardly anyone is overnighting in Mano Juan. You’ll have the whole village for yourself once the day trippers are gone, time seems to have forgotten this place. You might not always have electricity here, but you will have fantastic beaches, great views and a Robinson Crusoe island vibe all for yourself. Furthermore, it is recommended to hike (or take a boat) to Canto de la Playa (approx. 1.5 hours flat walking per way), one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic . And again, you most likely have the whole beach on your own.

To organize this trip, you have to drive to Bayahibe and park your car at the harbor. There is a boat leaving every morning around 9 am (can be 9 am, can be 10 am – remember, we’re on island time) from Bayahibe towards Mano Juan. The boat back leaves Mano Juan/Saona Island around 2.30 pm. This can be done as a day trip as well, but the adventure is much more worth it if you organize it as a 2 day-trip.

For further information, make sure to read the full Saona Island guide .

It is recommended to pre-book Saona Beach House *.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: a paradise just for you alone, without any tourists – isn’t this enough of an adventure? Pricing: Approx. 25 USD for the ferry per way per person + 70-80 USD for a double room per couple + food + transport from Punta Cana to Bayahibe Further information: Excursion to Isla Saona 2023 – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Saona Island Tour

The beautiful and remote village of Mano Juan at Isla Saona in the Dominican Republic

Salto de la Jalda

Salto de la Jalda is my favorite Punta Cana adventure when it comes to outdoor activities in Punta Cana. It is the highest waterfall in the Dominican Republic but hardly explored as the hike is pretty long – which makes it a perfect adventure as you usually have the entire place for yourself.

Salto de la Jalda is also one of the best options when it comes to hikes in Punta Cana . You should count around 10-14 miles for the return trip, depending on your type of rental car in Punta Cana . The hike starts in the community of Magua, around 2 hours drive away from most of the all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana . If you have an Economy car, you have to park close to the main road and walk the full 14 miles (return). If you rent an SUV with higher clearance, you can head closer to the trailhead and can start for a 10-mile hike (round trip) approximately.

While 10 (or even 14 miles) sounds pretty long, the hike is not too strenuous as it mostly covers flat terrain. You’ll pass cocoa plantations and cross the river a couple of times, just the last mile or so has a few steeper inclinations. Your reward will be the views of an amazing waterfall dropping around 400 feet – the highest in the Dominican Republic – where you even can have a dip into.

If you want to tackle this hike, it is recommended that you have experience following GPS trails and hiking in tropical terrain. You have to take all your snacks and drinks (at least 4 liters of water) as there is no opportunity to buy something during the hike. If you’re not used to hiking on your own on non-marked hiking trails, it is recommendable to go with a guide, which you can book here *. You also need a vehicle to get to Magua, it is best to rent a car in Punta Cana .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: having the highest waterfall in a country completely on your own and combining it with a 10-mile hike through untouched nature sounds like a pretty cool DIY adventure Pricing: completely for free if you have your own means of transport (otherwise, check rental car prices here * or get a taxi) + guide fee if you need one ( you can book it here * but a local guide would be cheaper) Further information: Salto de la Jalda – the highest waterfall in the Caribbean

Hike to Salto de la Jalda, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean

Hike to Salto de los Mosquitos

If 10-14 miles sounds like a hike that is too long for you, you could check out Salto de los Mosquitos, which involves a much shorter distance. As this Punta Cana waterfall is hardly known by anyone, it is another perfect Punta Cana adventure off-the-beaten-track.

Salto de los Mosquitos is actually a name I was awarding to the waterfall. Guess why? Because there are (usually) a lot of mosquitos around. Still, it is a rewarding jungle adventure, especially as you can combine it with a trip to Loma Linda, an (abandoned) mountain similar to Montaña Redonda , featuring incredible views.

The hike to Salto de los Mosquitos takes around 1.5 hours one-way, mostly uphill, but with a decent inclination. If you want to add Loma Linda to your hiking adventure, add another 30 minutes. The trailhead is at Rancho Terranova in Las Lisas. As long as you don’t have experience using GPS apps and trail trackers, you should go with a guide from this pretty cool restaurant and ranch, where you can also have a typical Dominican lunch afterwards. Particularly on Sundays, there is a large local audience present here enjoying the pool and loud Latin music. But don’t worry, they all only come to party, the hiking trails you will have completely on your own.

To get here, take your rental car from Punta Cana and head to Las Lisas, approximately one hour away from most all-inclusive resorts. Here you can easily park and start your hiking adventure. As mentioned, if you don’t have a GPS, ask for a guide at Rancho Terranova.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: perfect for those who want to explore Punta Cana on a hike with decent length and difficulty Pricing: 200-300 DOP entrance fee to Rancho Terranova + guide fee if you need one (I don’t have the prices but I would calculate with around 1500-2500 DOP per group) Further information: All waterfalls reachable from Punta Cana in under 3 hours

Road-Trip to Los Haitises National Park

If hiking in Punta Cana is not yours, but you’re still looking for a proper Punta Cana adventure, how about a mini road trip through this part of the Dominican Republic ? A perfect destination if you’d like to combine beautiful nature with impressions from the countryside and some unique things to do in Punta Cana and around.

The great thing about a road trip to Los Haitises National Park is that you can opt for this DIY adventure from Punta Cana as a 1-day, 2-day or 3-day tour. While a 1-day trip is perfect if you have a booking at one of Punta Canas’ all-inclusive resorts for the entire duration of your vacation, a road trip for 2 days is certainly better as this allows you not only to enjoy the national park much more, it also allows you to sleep in one of the most amazing eco-lodges in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic, Paraiso Caño Hondo *. It is a beautiful hotel amidst the national park, surrounded by several waterfalls directly on the property, which are forming various natural pools to swim in. The views particularly from the upper rooms are also amazing and the surrounding is as natural as you can imagine. From Paraiso Caño Hondo, you can head on several tours through the national park, among them by boat, by kayak or by hiking.

To get here, it is best to rent a car in Punta Cana and drive on a newly-paved road to Sabana de la Mar. From here, it is just around 25 minutes on a dirt road until you reach Los Haitises National Park. The tours in the park can either be prebooked here or reserved directly with your accommodation. To complete this Punta Cana road-trip adventure, some stops on the way are recommended such as at Montaña Redonda , in Miches or at Playa Esmeralda.

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: enjoy a personalized road trip from Punta Cana and visit one of the most beautiful national parks in the Dominican Republic Pricing: there is no entrance fee for the national park. You just need a vehicle (rental cars starting from around 40 USD per day incl. full insurance) + accommodation (approx. 60 USD per person incl. half-board) Further information: Los Haitises National Park – a wonderful excursion or road-trip from Punta Cana

The beautiful Los Haitises national park, the most popular national park in the Dominican Republic

Last but not least I have another road-trip adventure for you – but this time it is just a day trip from Punta Cana , hence no overnight accommodation is necessary. This Punta Cana road trip features two of the most pristine beaches in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic – hence it is perfect if you’re a beach lover and are looking for an adventure in Punta Cana.

Playa Esmeralda is one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic and is particularly remarkable for its slightly half-moon-shaped bay. Besides one resort that opened shortly after Covid-19, this more than 2-miles long beach is completely pristine and features perfect turquoise and usually serene water.

Playa La Vacama is a particularly wild beach north of Punta Cana and can mark a great stop on your way as well. If you head to Costa Arrecife *, you can have a delicious beachfront lunch here in a rustic setting. They even have tents here if you’re looking for an extra adventure in Punta Cana and would like to camp directly at the beach.

Both beaches can be combined perfectly as they are both in the same direction from Punta Cana, not more than 75 minutes away from most all-inclusive resorts .

Why it is one of the best Punta Cana adventures: two very different but beautiful beaches combined into a unique road-trip adventure Pricing: the beaches are free in the Dominican Republic. You only need your vehicle (rental cars starting from 50 USD per day). Further information: the best beaches in the Dominican Republic

Dune Buggy Excursion in Punta Cana with Xtreme Buggy Adventures

5 other adventures in Punta Cana

There are some other activities, excursions and tours in Punta Cana which are also called adventure. It is a great marketing word as you imply that someone will have unlimited fun and a lot of action. But can those kinds of excursions really be counted as a Punta Cana adventure tour? Let’s have a look!

Power adventures Punta Cana

Power adventures is a term used in Punta Cana to describe a combination of various water sports activities. Especially when you love to explore the ocean from above and from below, it is a great option. Considering you have so many different activities on one day, the Power adventures Punta Cana are indeed a pretty cool option to enjoy action and fun.

Usually, this kind of package consists of the following four adventures in Punta Cana: – snorkeling – hookah diving – a party boat cruise – parasailing

To book this kind of combo excursion, you have the following options: – the initial Power adventure Punta Cana package with 4 activities * – a Power adventure package with 3 activities (snorkeling, hookah diving, party boat) * – a Power adventure package with 3 activities (snuba snorkeling, parasailing, catamaran) *

Catamaran tours in Punta Cana to the Natural Swimming Pool

Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures

Talking about Punta Cana adventures in the water, Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures might be another option you come across when looking for suitable tours. However, don’t expect big ocean adventures here which get your adrenaline pumping as they offer mostly regular catamaran tours and snorkeling trips along the coast of Punta Cana .

The tours with Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures Punta Cana are recommendable but it is nothing that gets your heart pumping. If you’re looking for a relaxed quality cruise along the coastline of Punta Cana with a catamaran , you might check them out.

Catamaran tours in Punta Cana to the Natural Swimming Pool

Runners Adventures Punta Cana

You might have heard of Runners Adventures Punta Cana, a tour company in Punta Cana offering a wide variety of tours and excursions . Are they actually offering real Punta Cana adventures, maybe even runners’ adventures?

Yes and No! On the one hand, they don’t offer any Punta Cana adventure tours or excursions which makes them particularly adventurous. And they also don’t offer particular adventures for runners. Most of their tours are regular Punta Cana excursions such as a trip to Salto El Limón and the Samaná peninsula , whale-watching excursions or culture trips to Santo Domingo .

On the other hand, they also offer ziplining and ATV tours (which are called Jungle Buggies in their description), tour types of activities that already have been described as some cool Punta Cana adventures. Taking this into consideration, there are two cool things about this: – Their zipline circuit is among the longest in Punta Cana, including 12 cables and the longest zipline in the Dominican Republic . Hence yes, this zipline tour is also pretty adventurous. – You can book the ATV Jungle Buggy Tour and the Zipline of Runners Adventures as a combo excursion *, meaning you can have two cool adventures in Punta Cana in one day.

Ziplining Adventure in Punta Cana in the Anamuya Mountains

Bavaro Adventure Park

According to the name, Bavaro Adventure Park Punta Cana sounds like a pretty cool adventure in Punta Cana, doesn’t it?

And indeed it is – if you’re looking for a family adventure in Punta Cana. The different areas and activities of the park will make kids of all ages pretty happy and I am sure they will have an amazing day. Especially the zipline is a very family-friendly activity , but also the horseback rides or the waterfall pool is a great option for kids.

However, if you’re only traveling as a group of adults and are looking for adrenaline, some of the adventures above might be better suitable to satisfy your thirst for adrenaline and action.

Btw, there are other adventure parks in Punta Cana (besides Bavaro Adventure Park) which offer similar experiences incl. great adventures for families, for example, La Hacienda Park Adventure Punta Cana *.

Zipline Excursion in Punta Cana at Bavaro Adventure Park

Adventure Boogies Punta Cana

Last but not least, let’s talk about Adventure Boogies Punta Cana (sometimes also referred to as Adventure Buggies Punta Cana). They are one of the many dune buggy adventure tour operators in Punta Cana and one of the few ones which have their own route, even though they also head on the typical tracks to Macao Beach and a cave where you can swim.

Even though Adventure Boogies Punta Cana is one of the better dune buggy adventures, I would still recommend one of the adventures mentioned above in the first section – either the Xtreme dune buggy adventure or the ATV Tour with the Flintstones Buggy Adventure – they are simply more adventurous.
