Vienna , capital of Austria , is one of the most charming cities in central Europe being the second most populous, after Berlin. Crossed by the Danube River that records its main streets, it is located in the easternmost part of the country in the area of the Vienna Forest Valley , the feet of where the imposing Alps mountains stand. It has a unique cultural and artistic legacy, having as principal references Mozart, Beethoven or Sigmund Freud himself. On an architectural level, it stands out for its imposing imperial palaces, especially that of Schönbrunn, which acts as a summer residence for the Habsburgs. In the Museumsquartier district you can admire works by such renowned artists as Egon Schiele or Gustav Klimt. You can discover not only the essential places, but also its history and all the curiosities that make each corner an exciting adventure. Vienna State Opera – guided tours

On a 40-minute guided tour, experience the Vienna State Opera, one of the most significant opera houses in the world. Built in 1869 to plans by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, and reopened in 1955 following devastation in World War II, it offers its international audiences top-caliber music theater on some 300 days a year.

A peek behind the scenes of the Vienna State Opera , the world’s biggest repertory theater, reveals lots of things that are otherwise hidden from evening opera-goers. A tour provides lots of interesting information about the history, architecture and running of the Opera House.

From the foyer , the tour ascends the Grand Staircase and then through the ceremonial rooms (Teesalon, Marmorsaal, Schwindfoyer, Gustav-Mahler-Saal) to the auditorium with a view of the stage. Images that the whole world knows: The stalls transform once a year into a ballroom for the Vienna Opera Ball . Normally, the Viennese audience listens in from the tiers of seating.

On the website of the Vienna State Opera , you'll find the times at which the tours are offered (held at least in German and English). For dates of tours in other languages, please inquire directly at the contact details shown.

Walking tours & themed walks

Tour guide with listeners

Enjoy a selection of ways to tour Vienna on foot, including self-guided and guided alternatives, along with suggestions for some themed options.

Self-guided walk

Outside the Vienna opera house

(You start at the State Opera House…)

Many of the historical sights in Vienna live in the compact, largely flat, and eminently walkable city centre.

I’ve put together a set of suggestions for seeing the important locations on your own with photos, instructions, visitor tips, and links to more information on what you pass.

Wander the old town at your leisure (or take a total of around 90 minutes if you don’t hang around):

  • Part 1 : you begin at the Staatsoper and walk to the edge of the Habsburg’s Hofburg palace complex
  • Part 2 : historical Michaelerplatz square and through the Hofburg to Heldenplatz square
  • Part 3 : along a stretch of the old town city limits flanked by many of Vienna’s most famous buildings
  • Part 4 : back through the pedestrianised centre to end at Stephansdom cathedral

View of Stephansdom and south tower

(…and end at the cathedral)

If you prefer a more rural wander around the city, Vienna has numerous formal and clearly-marked hiking routes . Most take you into the surrounding woods and hills, with a couple of notable exceptions (like the social housing walk).

Since Vienna has dozens of certified tour guides willing to take you on all sorts of trips, I would simply send you to three other websites:

  • City tours *: various scheduled tours in Vienna for direct online booking. Many on foot, but also bus & bike tours
  • Findaguide.at : the Chamber of Commerce directory of guides you can hire
  • Guides-in-vienna.at : directory of the Association of Licensed Guides in Vienna

With few exceptions, working as a tour guide in Vienna needs a state license (awarded after completing a lengthy training & education programme and then passing an exam).

A strong alternative to a general guided walking tour is, of course, one of the hop on hop off bus services .

Themed tours

Aside from any specialist tours provided by the above, I have a few articles and links for those looking to explore particular themes. We begin with…

History & architecture

Many locations offer their own specialist in-house tours , notably the two Habsburg palace complexes, the cathedral, the Spanish Riding school, and traditional music venues like the State Opera House or Musikverein.

Architectural epochs

Parliament and Athena fountain at night

(The refurbished parliament building, constructed in the Hellenic style)

Within the following introductions to architectural and design eras relevant to Vienna, you’ll find tips on where to see examples.

  • Baroque : an ostentatious style from the 1600s and early 1700s. Several of Vienna’s more popular palaces and churches date back to this period.
  • Biedermeier : a more conservative, homely approach that developed in the first half of the 19th century as a consequence of what we’d probably call a police state today.
  • Historicism : where architects and designers drew inspiration from the past. Particularly popular in the second half of the 1800s, which explains all the neogothic, neorenaissance and similar buildings from that time.
  • Jugendstil : Vienna’s Art Nouveau movement whose heyday was the late 1800s and early 1900s. The pedestrianised centre has notable architectural examples , as does the rest of the old town .

Other themed historical location tips

The Sisi memorial

(The Sisi memorial in the Volksgarten park)

  • Empress Elisabeth : explore those sights closely associated with the famous Sisi , including her apartments and a dedicated museum
  • Vienna Modernism : Vienna’s creative flame probably burned brightest around 1900 (though my current calender and to-do list are a remarkable experiment in modernist creativity).
  • Jewish Vienna : the article covers significant locations.
  • Social housing : experts consider Vienna a role model for urban development, thanks in large part to the availability of high-quality city-owned housing. This harks back to the remarkably farsighted social housing projects of post-WWI, whose legacy remains in the cityscape.

Music and art

As mentioned above, major concert venues have in-house tours. I can particularly recommend the tour of the Staatsoper . Quite apart from the gorgeous interiors, the guide has enough anecdotes to fill a 5-hour Wagner opera.

The Strauss monument

(The golden Strauss monument)

A musician-themed walking tour is very easy. Just stand anywhere in the older parts of Vienna and look around. Chances are you’re next to where some baton-wielding giant of classical music lived / died / composed / played (not necessarily in that order).

But for detailed tips on places to see, I have a famous footsteps page that lists locations for Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss (II), Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, Liszt, Lehár and Bruckner.

Most of the composer guides split into three sections: life locations (residences and similar), music locations (venues for premieres and similar), and memorials & more (monuments, museums and similar).

Artists & architects

The Klimt Villa

(Gustav Klimt’s final studio)

That same On the trail of… page also has location guides for the artists Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, the artist/architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and the architect Otto Wagner.

All the guides cover places to see their works (or buildings in the case of Wagner and Hundertwasser) and those places associated with their life and legacy.

Vienna All-Inclusive Pass

As a final tip, the Vienna All-Inclusive Pass from Go City is the tourist pass with the greatest focus on tours and activities. At the time of writing, for example, it included one-time free access to 10+ walking, bike and bus tours.

Stops at Landmarks and Attractions As you ride through Vienna, you’ll make several stops at landmarks and attractions along the way. These stops will allow you to stretch your legs, take in the sights, and learn about the city’s history and culture. Some of the most popular stops include the Viennese Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Belvedere Palace. You’ll also have the opportunity to try some of the city’s famous pastries, coffee, and wine.

Food and Drinks Along the Way Vienna is known for its food and drink, and a guided bike tour is a great way to sample some of the best. Your guide will take you to some of the city’s most popular cafes, bakeries, and restaurants, where you’ll have the chance to try some of the local specialties. Whether you’re looking for a light snack or a full meal, there will be something to suit everyone’s taste.

Vienna is a perfect destination for a guided bike tour. These tours provide visitors with the opportunity to see the city from a different perspective, get some exercise, and learn about Vienna’s history and culture. One of the main benefits of taking a guided bike tour is that you’ll have a knowledgeable guide who can provide you with information about the city and its landmarks. The guide will lead the way, ensuring that you see all of the must-see sights, and can also help you navigate the city, which can be especially helpful for those who are unfamiliar with Vienna.

Another benefit of taking a guided bike tour is that you’ll get to experience the city in a unique way. Biking allows you to cover more ground than you would on foot, and you’ll get a better feel for the city’s different neighborhoods and areas. Additionally, biking is a fun and efficient way to travel, and it’s a great way to get some exercise while you’re on vacation.

If you’re planning on taking a Vienna guided bike tour, there are a few things that you can do to make the most of your experience. First, make sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Biking can be tiring, so it’s important to be comfortable. Second, bring a camera or smartphone to take pictures along the way. And finally, make sure to drink plenty of water and bring snacks, as the tours can be long and you’ll want to stay hydrated and nourished.

In conclusion, Vienna bike tours are a great way to see the city and experience its history and culture. With knowledgeable guides, quality bikes and equipment, and stops at landmarks and attractions, a guided bike tour is the perfect way to explore Vienna. So, book your tour today and get ready to experience the best that Vienna has to offer!

The 12 best things to do in Vienna

V ienna seems awfully grand at first glance, with its wow-eliciting clutch of imperial palaces and art-rammed galleries (courtesy of the Hapsburgs who ruled here for more than 600 years). But there’s more to the Austrian capital than the obvious big-hitters: go on a self-guided tram tour, talk to strangers at 'Coffeehouse Conversations', chill on the Danube Island, or hook onto a guided tour with a homeless resident and you’ll see one of Europe’s greatest cities from totally new and unexpected angles. Topping the polls in quality of living surveys most years, this city never loses its touch.

Below our expert shares her highlights among Vienna's wealth of attractions. For further inspiration, see our guides to the city's best  hotels ,  restaurants ,  nightlife  and  coffeehouses , plus how to spend a  weekend in Vienna .

Find things to do by area

City centre (1st district), leopoldstadt (2nd district), landstrasse (3rd district).

  • Nebau (7th district)

Hietzing (13th district)

Donaustadt (22nd district), liesing (23rd district), take a spin of the ring by tram.

Encircling the historic centre like a charm bracelet, Ringstrasse boulevard is a magnificent showcase of grand and glorious architecture. Here you can get your bearings while tracing Vienna's evolution from walled small town to powerful Empire and finally modern green city. Keep a look out for the lavishly stuccoed Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum), the whimsically turreted, neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall) and the monumental Heroes' Gate leading to the Hofburg Palace.

Insider's tip: Take tram 1 from Schwedenplatz and then tram 2 for a round trip of the Ring for the price of a standard ticket. This is most atmospheric in the early evening when the city starts to twinkle.

Nearest metro: Schwedenplatz

Climb to the top of a Gothic cathedral

Affectionately called ‘Steffl’ by the Viennese, St Stephen's Cathedral takes pride of place in the city’s historic Innere Stadt. Its distinctive polychrome mosaic roof of 230,000 glazed tiles shimmers just underneath the North Tower's viewing platform. The main nave with its baroque high altar and late-Gothic pulpit impress inside. Try and catch a service here – during these times, otherwise-closed gates are swung open for worshippers.

Insider's tip:  It’s well worth puffing up 343 steps to the top of the 136m-high South Tower to see Vienna open up like a pop-up book before you, with views reaching over the city’s domes, spires and rooftops to the hills beyond. If you're visiting at Christmas, attend an advent concert.

Nearest metro: Stephansplatz (U1, U3)

Tune into Vienna’s social side

If you're looking for a walking tour with a difference, try this one for size. Shades runs edgy, insightful two-hour ambles through the city, which are led by members of Vienna's homeless population. Kicking off at a central meeting point, the offbeat tours dive into lesser-known corners of the Innere Stadt, with guides sharing their moving stories in the process. This is a side to Vienna that few get to see.

Insider's tip: Shades has recently broadened its offer and now offers guided walks with refugees and former drug addicts, too. Asking questions is encouraged and the tours help to bridge the gap between perceived prejudices and reality.

Revel in imperial riches

Few European palaces can outpomp the 600-year-old former abode of the Hapsburg royals, which today houses a lavish mix of museums and ministries, a chapel and a library. The most peculiar site in the Hofburg is undoubtedly the exercise room of Empress Sisi, a 19th-century fitness pioneer: her wooden gymnastics rings still dangle from a palatial door frame. Don't miss the particularly blingy Imperial Treasury or the striking baroque library (Nationalbibliothek).

Insider's tip:  Sneak into Hofburg using a passageway left of Palmenhaus and onto Schweizerhof and Hofburg Chapel to discover its earliest remains. Join locals for summer picnics in the sculpture-dotted Burggarten or for drinks on the terrace of the Art Nouveau Palmenhaus.

Nearest metro: Herrengasse (U3)

Marvel at Old Master paintings

Beauty, power and drama ooze from the Habsburgs' collection of fine art at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Lodged in a palatial neoclassical building, this museum presents a fascinating romp through fine arts: from Ancient Egypt and Rome to the Renaissance and Baroque. The undoubted highlight is the Picture Gallery where masterpieces like Pieter Bruegel the Elder's astonishingly detailed Tower of Babel , Raphael's Madonna of the Meadow (1506) and Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath (1607) enthral.

Insider's tip:  Stop at the museum’s sumptuous café underneath the dome for a Viennese coffee or bite to eat. On the main staircase, keep an eye out for Klimt’s cycle of frescoes depicting major periods in art history.

Speak with strangers

If you’ve ever fancied sharing your deepest secrets, regrets and desires with a total stranger but haven’t dared, now’s your chance. A one-off way to slip under the skin of the city, the monthly Coffeehouse Conversations, run by witty British expat Eugene Quinn,  give you the chance to meet a local over evening drinks at one of the grand coffeehouses on the Ringstrasse. Simply turn up with an open mind and sociable spirit. You’ll be presented with a probing question ‘menu’ of appetizers, meatier mains and desserts. The idea is not to rush through the lot but to really take time to think about each question and give it due attention.

Insider’s tip: Can’t make the Coffeehouse Conversations? Check out Whoosh’s range of other quirkily alternative events, from Vienna Ugly tours to Smells like WIEN Spirit, an olfactory spin of the city.

Ride a charmingly old-fashioned Ferris wheel

A whirl on the Wiener Riesenrad giant Ferris wheel is a must for the far-reaching views out over Vienna (it goes slowly enough to play ‘spot the landmark’). Built by British engineers over 100 years ago, the Riesenrad has received a couple of facelifts, including an electronic one to brighten up the night sky. It's been featured in a number of films, including  The Third Man ,  The Living Daylights  and  Before Sunrise .

Insider's tip:  Coincide a ride, which only takes 20 minutes, with a wander in Vienna’s Prater, a vast park with chestnut-lined avenues, lawns and woods for strolling, cycling and jogging. Or linger in the Wurstelprater for all the fun of the fair.

Go in for The Kiss

Schloss Belvedere encompasses two palaces linked by French-style formal gardens that are guarded by winged sphinxes. It is vast, magnificent and worthy of at least half a day’s excursion. The baroque halls of the Upper Belvedere reel in Klimt fans with golden wonders such as The Kiss (1908) and Judith (1901) while the Lower Belvedere impresses with lavish state apartments where Hapsburg royalty once swanned around.

Insider’s tip: Tie in your visit with a peek in Belvedere 21, a showcase of modern and contemporary art in a glass-and-steel building, with a sculpture garden perfect for warm days. See the website for details on the latest rotating exhibitions.

Peruse pop art at museumsquartier.

Vienna's largest museum complex, also known as MQ, is unmissable for modern art fans. In the Leopold Museum, don’t miss Schiele's provocative yet vulnerable female nudes, and his self-portraits, which offer a chilling taste of the spiritual abyss that characterised early-20th-century Vienna. Perhaps the most compelling thing about the Mumok gallery, set to reopen post revamp in summer 2024,  is how it juxtaposes international pop art and radical Austrian pieces.

Insider's tip: MQ's iconic Enzi lounge sofas in the courtyard are a nice place for a rest after traipsing around the gallery. Have your lunch at popular Glacis Beisl tavern, with a lovely outdoor space behind Mumok.

Explore fabulous formal gardens

Once the Habsburgs' summer residence, sumptuous Schönbrunn Palace warrants a day in itself, particularly in good weather. Audio guide tours whisk you through opulent, chandelier-lit state apartments, including the frescoed, mirror-clad Spiegelsaal where Mozart gave his first public performance aged six in 1762. Allow ample time for a saunter in the formal baroque gardens, with leafy avenues, mock Roman ruins, a maze and the Neptune Fountain.

Insider's tip: Head up to the Gloriette for a drink and sweeping views over the palace grounds and city. Or if you've children in tow, take them to see the Giant Pandas in Tiergarten Schönbrunn , the world’s oldest zoo.

Escape to an island in the Danube

When the heat gets too much to handle in summer, the Viennese flock to the 21km-long island of Donauinsel for a swim, barbecue or sunbathe (there are nudist sections should you be that way inclined). To ramp up the action, you can rent bikes, canoes, stand-up paddleboards and inline skates, and there’s even a surfing school, wakeboard and water ski lift and climbing park. And the hottest new thing? Stand-up paddleboard yoga . In late June, the island hosts the Donauinselfest, a free music festival.

Insider's tip: Vienna is miles from the nearest sea, but you’ll find beaches right here. Swing over to palm-dotted CopaBeach to crash on a deckchair and dig your toes in the sand, cocktail or beer in hand.

Sip wine among the vines

Vienna for wine? You bet. Just a quick tram or U-Bahn hop from the centre, vines march up hillsides above the gentle curve of the Danube. The Austrian city is the only capital in the world to grow substantial quantities of wine within its boundaries. To tune into the scene, visit one of its Heurigen, woodsy wine taverns on the city’s fringes that pop corks from spring to autumn. Coupled with a sprig of pine or fir, a sign proclaiming "Ausg'steckt" means the Heurigen are open for business. And they have been ever since Emperor Joseph II wangled it for local vintners to be able to serve homemade food and wine without a permit way back in 1784.

Insider's tip: One of the best Heurigen is Edlmoser in Vienna’s 23rd district, Liesing. The winery’s family tradition reaches back to 1374 and its  much-loved Heuriger has a rambling garden for enjoying wines like the full-bodied Vienna, a blend of Zweigelt und Sankt Laurent, with buffet specials like wild boar sausage and caraway roast.

Electric Buses

Big bus tours adds 40 electric sightseeing buses to its fleet.

Avatar for Michelle Lewis

Global open-top tour bus operator Big Bus Tours has added 40 electric sightseeing buses to its fleet in time for the summer holiday season.

Big Bus Tours is introducing 20 brand-new Ankai electric buses in Paris and Vienna and retrofitting 20 buses in London by converting 20 of the existing diesel fleet to electric.

The new electric tour buses in Paris and Vienna are purpose-built electric sightseeing buses supplied by Ankai Anhui. The buses have 315 kW battery packs, sending power to the road through a ZF hub-motor axle. The buses can DC fast charge within four to six hours, depending on the grid load.

In London, the original buses are 2012 Ankai tri-axle diesel converted to fully electric by Equipmake. The conversion entails fitting a 327 kW battery pack that sends power to a single motor driving directly into the existing axles. The buses can be charged either AC or DC. The London buses are only used during the day, so they’ll be charged overnight on 22 kW chargers.

“We are thrilled to welcome these new electric buses as part of our investment in sustainability,” said Pat Waterman, executive chairman of Big Bus Tours. “This EV expansion is a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the tour experience for our customers.”

The electric buses in all three European cities will hit the road this summer, bringing the company’s total electric fleet to 51 (just over 10% of its global fleet).
