By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 30, 2023

Grenada and its cruise port in St. George's (the capital of this small island) is one of the most off the beaten track cruise destinations in both the South and Eastern Caribbean itineraries. Because of this and its natural beauty, this cruise port has a unique allure.

Cruise ships dock in Grenada in a long pier perpendicular to the coast where two large ships or three smaller ones can moor. The pier is next to the heart of St George (the capital of Grenada with an estimated population of 112,500). The Melville Street Cruise Terminal, with most services and amenities cruisers require, is at the end of this relatively new pier.

Besides restrooms, ATMs, and Free Wi-Fi, the cruise passenger will find in the Terminal an excellent information kiosk of the Grenada Tourism Authority where you can get good maps and guides. A few other stalls can be helpful for those wishing to explore Grenada on Your Own: a stall selling the water taxi tickets, another with tickets for a scenic train ride of St. George, and the official taxi dispatch kiosk with regulated fares..

Part of the Terminal is occupied by the Esplanade Shopping Mall which, accordingly, has a profusion of shops. The majority of these are local souvenirs shops but also a few (less than a handful) of the typical duty-free stores that populate the Caribbean, such as Colombian Emeralds or Milano.

Once outside the Terminal building, you will be on the main street of the historical St. George's downtown. The sightseeing train ride stop is on your left, which is a perfect way to discover the landmarks of this small, quaint and charming city.

Also on the left side of the Terminal, no more than 100 yards (meters) farther away, cruise passengers will find the Water Taxi with connections to Grande Anse Beach (considered one of the top 10 in the Caribbean) and Mount Rouge Beach. Both are stunning beaches not to be missed.

Very close by, just a couple of blocks from the terminal, you will find the Fresh Market that many enjoy exploring and is a great place to enjoy a drink in the shade.

To the right, the main street will leads to the steps that give access to the Fort George and next to these (on the left) the entrance to the Sendal Tunnel that connects this side of St. George to a beautiful natural harbor known as Carenage.

Fort George - Sendal Tunnel

Although it doesn't happen often if there are more than 2 vessels in port, cruise ships may anchor on the bay close to St. George. Cruise passengers will then be tendered to the Carenage. As already mentioned, this part of the historical town of St. George is connected to downtown by the Sendal tunnel.

Carenage in Grenada

A word about the Sendal Tunnel. Many visitors feel intimidated to cross this tunnel as you will be sharing the road with cars and there isn't a protected sidewalk for pedestrians. However, the locals trick that the Editor has always used is to walk facing the oncoming cars - have in mind that traffic in Grenada circulates on the left, like in Great Britain.

Grenada Port of Call

With very few exceptions, all cruise lines call at Grenada's St Georges Cruise Port. However, some cruise lines like Carnival, Crystal, Holland & America, NCL or Oceania only dock sporadically in Grenada either on re-positioning cruises or on an exceptional itinerary. By contrast, some cruise lines dock regularly at Grenada usually between November and as late as April.

Celebrity (with the Silhouette and the Summit), Royal Caribbean (Jewel Of The Seas and Serenade Of The Seas) and Princess regularly include Grenada in the South and/or Eastern Caribbean itineraries. And so do the British P&O Cruises and Marella, two German cruise lines (Aida and Mein Schiff), the two Italian cruise lines (Costa and MSC) and the Spanish Pullmantur.

Less regularly but with quite a few calls every year, it should be noted that small ships of luxury cruise lines such as Royal Clipper, SeaDream, Windstar, Silversea, Seabourn, Ponant or Regent also include Grenada in their itineraries.

Grenada Cruise Port: Attractions, Beaches, Weather

The Grenada cruise port at St. George’s in the eastern Caribbean is known for its shore excursions to mountains, lush rainforests and waterfalls.

Cruise ships and resort visitors don’t necessarily go there just for the beaches. They go there as much as anything for the beauty and ecotourism.

The “Isle of Spice” consists of the main island of Grenada and the smaller islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

It is not the most popular Caribbean island because it is so far south. It lies about midway between St. Vincent and Trinidad and southwest of Barbados. But it does have some unique qualities that attract cruise and resort visitors alike.

Cruise ships dock at the Grenada Port Authority cruise ship terminal. Passengers will walk off the docks and into St. George’s, the capital of the island. St. George’s has a horseshoe-shaped harbor surrounded by multi-colored dockside warehouses and red-tiled roofs of shops and homes.

The city is filled with English, French and West Indian history. It also has many options to view French and British Colonial architecture because both nations previously had it as a territory.

Quick Travel Tips

Attractions and shore excursions, walking around attractions.

The city is known for French, English and West Indian history and also Colonial architecture.

Attractions in St. George’s for walking tours include the Grenada National Museum on Young Street near Vendors Market. It is in an old army barracks and prison built in 1704. Other attractions in the city include the pink Anglican church, Market Square and Fort George.

Fort George, built in 1705, is less than a half mile from the cruise terminal. It has excellent views of the city and the harbor. It is still in use as a police headquarters. Its battery of old cannons are used during special ceremonies.

The size of the city and number of attractions mean that visitors who want to tour St. George’s will more likely do it on their own rather than pay for a guided walking tour.

Tourist Attractions

The Grenada cruise port is one of the better island destinations in the Caribbean for old military forts. Shore excursions from cruise lines include them in tours of the island.

A common shore excursion includes Fort Frederick, Annandale Falls and Grand Etang Lake & National Park. Prices usually range between $60 and $100 per person depending on the length, amenities, sail date and other factors.

Fort Frederick is better preserved than Fort George, but it is two miles outside of the city. Like Fort George, it has 360-degree views of St. George’s and Grenada.

Otherwise, Grenada’s tourist attractions are mainly outdoors and created by nature. The main island has many hiking opportunities and quite a few waterfalls.

Annandale Falls, the most popular with shore excursions, are easily accessible from St. George’s. It has restrooms and nearby shops. Tours that include Annandale Falls and Fort Frederick cost about $100 per person for a two-hour trip.

Otherwise, anyone exploring Grenada on their own or as part of an island-wide guided tour can see plenty more waterfalls. Concord Valley has three waterfalls known together as Concord Falls. Fontainebleau has a waterfall dropping off a 65-foot cliff into a clear pool. The Royal Mt. Carmel Falls have two that drop more than 70 feet.

Island tours may also include the Grenada Sugar Factory in St. George’s, the River Antoine Rum Distillery in St. Patrick parish, Westerhall Rum Distillery in St. David and Grenville Nutmeg Processing Station in St. Andrew.

Attractions near the St. John parish include Dunfermline Rum Distillery, Douglaston Spice Estate and Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Station.

Anyone who wants a little more adventure can try river tubing on Balthazar River. This three-hour shore excursion has prices starting at $80 per person. (Prices vary according to the sailing date.) The trip includes a 45-minute drive through the island’s lush interior.

Nearby Beaches

The best beach on Grenada and one of the closest to the St. George’s cruise port is Grand Anse beach. It has a reputation as one of the best beaches in the world by top travel writers and critics.

Grand Anse beach is two miles of white sand in a sheltered bay and is a favorite of many locals and visitors alike. It is four miles or 20 minutes south of the cruise terminal over a slow road.

Grand Anse is heavily featured in advertisements about the island, and several major hotels are located next to it. Indeed, the beach has a lot to offer, from water sports and scuba diving shops, to the vendors markets with local crafts and several restaurants.

Cruise line visitors can take a $5 water taxi to get there (if the line isn’t too long) or a somewhat more expensive taxi cab. Anyone who wants to see both Grand Anse and more of Granada can take a shore excursion for $50 to $100 per person that includes the beach as well as other major attractions such as Fort Frederick and Annandale Falls.

If several ships are in port, Grand Anse may get crowded. Morne Rouge Bay beach is an option for anyone who wants a smaller, less crowded and more secluded beach with calmer waters. It is only one mile south of the Grand Anse beach.

Otherwise, some shore excursions are available for closer beaches and a visit to Fort Frederick for prices starting at about $50 per person.

Shopping / Restaurants

St. George’s is one of the less-visited cruise ports in the Caribbean, and the small cruise terminal reflects the number of visitors. But the streets of St. George’s make up for the difference with souvenir shops, restaurants and art galleries.

Esplanade Mall on St. Juilles Street, less than a half mile north of the cruise terminal, is the only shopping mall in St. George’s. It has about 50 shops covering the usual range of duty-free goods such as jewelry, clothing, perfumes and crafts.

The open-air Market Square on Young Street is a closer option at a quarter of a mile east of the cruise terminal. It may not appeal to cruise visitors as much because it has quite a bit of fresh produce that can’t go back on the ship. Daring visitors can eat their lunches right there. It’s colorful, lively and has some crafts for sale.

Visitors to Grand Anse Beach can go to Spiceland Mall, which has about 20 shops, or Vendors Market, which has about 80 booths with arts, crafts, spices, produce and other goods for sale.

Getting Around / Transportation

Land and water taxis are also available for hire. Hotel and airport taxis have fixed rates, while rates vary for other points of interest around the island. Always ask for the rate before getting into the taxi.

Rental car drivers must be at least 25 years old, have a valid driver’s license and get a $60 EC driving permit from the police station at The Carenage in St Georges. Some rental agencies provide the permit.

The island has a public bus system that runs between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, according to the Grenada Tourism Authority. Each bus has a zone sticker in the front and a conductor to help passengers. Fares cost between $2.50 and $6.50 EC.

Weather / Best Time to Go

Grenada is one of the warmer islands in the Caribbean with an average high temperature of about 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius almost year round.

The dry season is February through May with an average rainfall of one inch or less. The rainy season begins in June. Total rainfall keeps climbing until it reaches more than 10 inches historically in November.

The most popular month to visit is August followed by December, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The least popular is September and then a tie between June and October.

Even though August is the most popular month to visit, May is better because of a low risk of rain.

Commonly known as the Spice Island, Grenada is part of a beautiful tri-island state in the southern Caribbean. With a population of only 110,000 people, the island is home to a beautiful landscape with pristine beaches, fantastic snorkeling and diving, numerous festivals, abundant food, and the ever-present aromas of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Grenada contains just the right balance of modern conveniences with traditional Caribbean charm. The people are friendly and helpful by nature and quite welcoming to visitors. It is the perfect destination for families as well as couples.

Grenada, although one of the less popular cruise ports in the Caribbean, is certainly worth the visit. Whether you are stopping over on an island-hopping cruise excursion for a day or planning an extended vacation, be sure to use this Grenada cruise port guide to explore what this island has to offer.

Beaches, waterfalls, and hikes will attract the nature lover while forts, and museums will attract the history buff. For the foodie, spices and spice plantations are abundant. I would be amiss if I did not mention the rum distilleries.

Pro Tip: Fort Frederick is walking distance from the cruise port if you prefer to go on your own.

Some best things to do in Grenada should include:

Underwater Sculptures

A trip to Grenada would not be complete without a trip to the World-Famous Underwater Sculpture Park . The Molinere Sculpture Park, created in 2006, consists of a collection of underwater contemporary art designed to engage the local population with the sea.

House of Chocolate

The House of Chocolate is a mini museum and café which portrays the history of chocolate. From the history of cacao you are educated on how it is grown, harvested and processed. You can also grind some cacao beans and see how they make cocoa butter and chocolate bars. Tasting is also available, and an assortment of items is available to take away. Oh, and you might even find some free samples!

Grand Anse Beach

Spending some time on the beach in Grenada is a must! There are so many well-kept beaches where you can relax, read a book, take a dip, watch the boats go by or simply just listen to the waves.

From Grand Anse beach, you can see the cruise ships in port and marvel at their beauty with the tropical island landscape as their background. The azure colour of the water relieves all stress as you walk along the beautiful soft sand beach.

Tip: An inexpensive taxi ride could be just what you need to enjoy this day.

Laura’s Herb and Spice Garden

Laura’s Herb and Spice Garden is a definite must as Grenada is known as the Spice Island after all. From the time you arrive on the island, the Christmas-like scents of nutmeg and cinnamon fill the air. At Laura’s Garden you will be escorted and guided though an array of locally ground herbs and spices. The guide will demonstrate how to grow them and some of their uses.

There is a small store on-site to purchase some of these spices. On the day I was there, a worker was demonstrating how cinnamon was traditionally harvested from the tree and formed into the curled pieces we see today. This is one of the best things to do in Grenada.

Cruise Planning Checklist Bundle

Planning a cruise is made easy with this Cruise Planning Checklist Bundle. It has everything you need to keep you well organized. From Pre-planning to Budget Planning, Excursion Planning, and a variety of Checklists, you will have the tools to plan and enjoy your cruise.

Seven Sisters Falls

One of the most beautiful hikes in Grenada is to the Seven Sisters Falls in Grand Etang National Park. The hike takes about forty-five minutes, and it is quite the trek. Be sure to wear proper shoes and perhaps take a walking stick as the path does tend to be steep and slippery.

Once at the falls you will be tempted to go for a swim or to try jumping off the falls. Jumping is quite dangerous so do so at your own risk. If you go with a guide, they will be able to identify the flora and fauna of this beautiful area. You might even see a monkey or two.

Fort Frederick

Although looking a little worse for wear, Fort Frederick , is the fort that you see when you arrive in the cruise port in St. George’s. High on a hill, it offers incredible views in all directions. In the evening, you will see amazing ocean sunsets with colourful reflections on the surrounding hills. The southwestern direction offers views of the southwestern peninsula, the airport, Grand Anse Beach, the roofs of St. George’s University and tiny Glovers Island which was used for whaling in the 1920’s.

At the fort, you will notice that the cannons are facing backwards as it was believed at the time that a military offense would come by land rather than by sea. This fort is known as the “backward’ s facing” fort.

Clark’s Court Rum Distillery

Many cruise excursions include Clark’s Rum Distillery . In advance of entering the plant, hard hats will be provided. Also be aware that there are many stairs on the tour and some passageways are narrow. Your guide with take you through the distillery and provide an informative presentation of the history of the distillery. It is quite interesting to see the rum making process.

At the end of the tour, you will be guided to the on-site store for tasting and sampling the rum. There are over 15 varieties of flavoured rum available for tasting and purchase. Don’t get too excited as quantities are limited for tasting. My favorite is the chocolate rum. Remember, if you are on a cruise, you cannot bring a bottle back to the ship. Definitely, one of my favorite things to do in Grenada.

Grenada National Museum

This little museum is a great place to learn about the history of Grenada from the European influences of the 15th century to the modern-day including Grenada Independence in 1974 and the Revolution in 1979. Inside you will fine artefacts and displays including Amerindian pottery, cannons from British/French battles, coppers used to process sugarcane and other objects from the 17th and 18th century.

The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Georges Grenada. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

St Georges is Grenada's capital and main port. Its horseshoe-shaped harbour is surrounded by a hillside of an extinct volcano crater.

St George's Grenada is a popular Caribbean cruise ship vacation destination. The cruise port is managed by "Grenada Ports Authority" (controlled by the country's Minister of Finance). Its initiatives and investments over the years hugely increased the country's potential for cargoship handling and cruise ship tourism. The port authority is responsible for all operations in Port St George's, as well as in Prickly Bay, Grenville, St David's Harbour (all three on Grenada Island) and also in Tyrrel Bay (on Carriacou Island).

Grenada's capital has population around 35,000. Here is also the country's airport (Maurice Bishop International Airport). The city's main businesses are tourism and export (nutmeg, mace spice, cocoa bean cacao). The climate is moderate tropical, ensuring the success of spice production.

The Spicemas Carnival takes place in St George's each year, held in the second week in August. The festival celebrates slaves' emancipation and features a wealth of themes, costumes, calypso queens, calypso steel band music, parade through the streets.

Port's first-ever double ship day was December 15, 2018, when here berthed simultaneously the 4400-passenger  MSC Preziosa ( MSC ) and the 3600-passenger  Celebrity Reflection ( Celebrity ).

Larger cruise ships in Grenada dock at Melville Street Cruise Terminal. After docking at the new pier, disembarked passengers exit through Esplanade Shopping Mall and directly to the downtown.

Smaller cruise vessels dock at the city's Inner Harbour. Their passengers disembark onto The Carenage waterfront. During busy days (with more than 3 ships visiting at a time) the extra ships are anchord near the city and their passengers are transported to the harbor via tender boats.

Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park Mermaid

This is the cruise adventure that my mom and I did. We had a good time!

We got a beautiful catamaran ride, 45 minutes of great snorkeling, and beach time all in 3 hours.

Bonus: Spice Tour of the Island

This excursion wasn't offered by our ship, but another couple on our cruise ship did this excursion on a prior cruise and had good things to say about it.

My Favorite Thing to Do from Grenada Cruise Port: Snorkeling and then Grand Anse Beach

My mom and I did the "Isle of Spice Snorkeling" excursion with the Holland American Nieuw Statendam ship.

The “Isle of Spice Snorkeling excursion” was a 3-hour excursion that left from the port at Grenada.

The excursion included about an hour of snorkeling at the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, a catamaran ride, and an hour at Grand Anse Beach.

Cruise Tip: Arrive at your excursion at least 15 minutes early. The departing time means the time that the excursion leaves.

For example, our cruise excursion had a departure time of 9:15am. By 9am, we were checked in. By 9:10am, we were all on the catamaran. We left at 9:12am (early!!).

Below is a detailed summary of the snorkeling excursion in Grenada for cruise travelers.

What's included: catamaran ride, 45 minutes of snorkeling, catamaran ride to Grand Anse Beach, and 45 minutes of beach time before heading back to the ship.

Catamaran Ride

The first part of our excursion started with a brief 15 minute ride to the snorkeling spot, called Medallion in Grenada.

Then, we put on our snorkeling gear.

Grenada excursion and catamaran ride to Underwater Sculpture Park

We followed our tour guide for a 35 minute snorkeling adventure (all within the same small area, which is a good thing!) with about 10 minutes of free time to snorkel around.

We saw the underwater sculptures of Grenada, which were cool to look at.

Underwater Sculptures at Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park

We also saw fish, sea urchins, an eel (or at least I did!), and coral reefs.

After our 45-minute snorkel adventure, we took a 15-20 minute boat ride to Grand Anse Beach.

Grand Anse Beach

Grand Anse Beach in Grenada

Grand Anse Beach is lovely! I walked around while my mom floated in the ocean.

On the way back to the cruise ship, the tour guides offered us cheese and tuna sandwiches (so generous!). We also had our choice of Caribbean beverages, which were Sunny-D Light, Hawaiian Punch, soda, and water.

The tour was exactly 3 hours, which was just perfect for us.

We went back to the ship for lunch. Then, went out again to explore the shops and Spice Market around the Grenada Cruise Port.

St. George’s – Grenada

Last updated on March 10th, 2024 at 01:23 pm

Experience the warmth and beauty of St. George's, the capital of Grenada. Explore historic forts, stroll through spice markets, or visit the enchanting Grand Anse Beach. Immerse yourself in the flavors of nutmeg and cocoa, discover the underwater sculpture park, and let the vibrant colors and friendly locals make your visit to St. George's truly unforgettable.

Credit: worldatlas.com

Good To Know

The wet season in St. George’s, from mid-December to early April, is hot, windy and mostly cloudy. The rest of the year is considered the dry season and is warm, again very windy and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 75°F to 87°F and is rarely below 72°F or above 88°F.

The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. While there are some places where you can use American dollars on the island, you will probably get change back in the local currency. There are numerous ATMs in St. George’s, so you will not have any difficulties getting cash. If you want to know the current exchange rate, go here: https://www.xe.com/

Banking hours are Monday to Friday from 8am to 2pm.

Wireless Internet:

The cruise ship terminal has free WiFi as do many of the cafes and restaurants on the island.

English is the official language spoken in Grenada. You may also hear French-African spoken.

Where You Dock in St. George’s – Grenada

The Melville Street Cruise Terminal is the spot where most ships dock. It is located right next to the town of St. George’s. Passengers will exit the pier through the Esplande Shopping Mall which takes you right into downtown St. George’s. Smaller ships dock at the Carenage, which is near the main pier.

You will find restrooms and ATMs at the main terminal. There is also an information kiosk sponsored by the Grenada Tourism Authority. Maps and written guides are available here. A duty free mall with shops is located at the port.

You can get tickets for a scenic train ride of St. George, and purchase water taxi tickets and find a taxi dispatch kiosk in the terminal.

Getting Around St. George’s – Grenada

Once you are outside the cruise terminal building, you will be on the main street of St. George’s historical downtown. Outside the port buildings there are pick-up and drop-off points for taxis and some tours. Just a few steps north of the pier is the Melville Street Bus Terminus.

St. George’s is a small town, and once outside the terminal  buildings, shops and cafes are a short walk away. While it is possible to walk St. George’s, it has a very hilly topography and there are lots of steps and steep hills throughout the town.

The historical area of Carenage is just a 10 minute walk from the port where you can see an amazing view from Fort George, and learn about the history and culture with a visit to the Grenada National Museum.

It would take you about three hours to explore the city if you chose a self-guided tour.

Buses in Grenada are privately-owned vans. They will seat up to 20 people, and the drivers like to keep the van as full as possible. The owners of the van are usually the drivers, too. There is also a conductor in the van that watches for passengers and signals the driver to stop.

There are designated bus stops, but most of these vans will stop anywhere when they see a passenger. When you want to get off the bus, knock on the side of the van and they will let you off.

Know that sometimes the driving can be erratic and so can the schedule that buses run on. Each driver gets a limited number of daily runs on their route and so they will pack as many passengers into the van as they can and make the best time that they can.  You will also find that many of the vans have been decorated according to the owner’s taste, so they make for some colorful modes of transportation.

They run Monday to Saturday from 6am to 9pm and fares vary depending on the route.

Taxis & Water Taxies

There is a taxi kiosk at the cruise port terminal that assists you in getting a taxi. Rates in Grenada are fixed, so there is no need for negotiation.

Water taxis are small boats, so you’ll likely get a little wet, but they can be a fun way to get a different view of the island. There’s a kiosk at the cruise terminal where you can purchase tickets.

Here are a few of the taxi and water taxi services:

Ace Ventura Taxi & Tours   (yes, that is the real name!) They offer service 24/7

Sweet Grenada Tours, Taxi and Rentals You can book a taxi or a tour with this service.

This video gives you an idea of a water taxi ride:

Rental Cars

If you want to rent a car in Grenada, you will need a valid driver’s license and a local permit. The permit needs to be purchased from the Central Police Station in St. George’s. You will need to be over 21 years of age. It has also been said that you will need nerves of steel and the reflexes of a cat to drive the steep and windy roads in Grenada. Driving is on the left side of the road.

Here are a couple of rental places in St. George:

Y & R Rental Car Services

Azar’s Auto Rentals   (this service will bring the car to you)

A1 Auto Rental

Yes, you can rent a car in Grenada if you really want to. However, depending on how long you will be in port, you might want to leave the driving to a taxi. Read this funny, but true, note from The Professional Hobo , who did drive in Grenada while living there.

“Driving in Grenada, I slam on the brakes. On the bank is a goat grazing dangerously close to the road. In front of me a driver stopped suddenly to chat with a friend on a road-side porch. In front of him is a wheelbarrow, inexplicably sitting on the road. In trying to maneuver around these obstacles, I skirt between a massive pot-hole with a muffler sitting in the bottom and the road’s edge (which involves a steep drop-off). Just ahead are more parked cars I’ll have to get around once I’ve let traffic coming the other way through. Adding further to the chaos, I plan to stop randomly at the side of the road myself to get some barbecued chicken.”

Grenada Discovery Train

The Grenada Discovery Train leaves from the cruise terminal every 45 minutes and tours the city. Included in your ticket is the cost of admission for the Grenada Museum and Fort George. The tour is 45 minutes and if you choose to get off at the museum or the fort, you would have 45 minutes to explore before the train comes back to pick you up.

Shopping In St. George’s – Grenada

There are some Grenadian specialties that you should keep an eye out for when doing your shopping – as souvenirs for you, or gifts for someone else: Nutmeg ( and other spices), local rum, Guava jam (so good you could eat it right out of the jar!), hand-dyed fabrics called batik turned into clothing and blankets, chocolate made from local cocoa, and handwoven baskets.

Just make sure if you’re purchasing food items, especially spices, that they are in sealed containers so they don’t get confiscated by customs when you return from your cruise!

Here are some stores where you may find these items:

The Esplanade Mall – at the port

In order to get to the town of St. George’s, from the pier you need to walk through the Esplanade Mall. Here you will find duty-free shops, with perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry, liquor, tobacco and of course, souvenirs.  You will find handbags, electronics, local crafts, a supermarket and apparel for men, women’s and children. There is also a Western Union located in the mall.

St. George’s Market – 5 min. walk from port

Also known as the Spice Market, you will find both souvenir shopping and some of the spices that the island is named for in this open-air market. Especially bustling on Saturday mornings, you will be able to find handmade crafts and fresh produce too. The Grenada Government is working on rehabilitating the space, so be prepared for various states of construction in and around the area.

Art Fabrik – 5 min. walk from port

In the historic district of St. George’s, on Young Street, this boutique is located in a building that is over 200 years old. Local craft items, wearable art and batik are in this colorful shop that had been a fish monger’s building. The batik is made right there in the shop. It is designed, created, traced, waxed, dyed, boiled out and hung out to dry in the Caribbean sun. So this batik is the real thing!

Jo Ann’s Souvenirs – beside pier

Located in The Esplanade Mall, they have souvenirs, gifts, jewelry, handbags and ladies dresses. It is said that Jo Ann’s is your number one source for souvenirs on the island.

Grand Anse Craft and Spice Market – 3.5 miles from port, in The Lime

At the Grand Anse Craft and Spice Market, you will find items made by local craftsmen and artisans, fresh spices and amenities such as washrooms, Wi-Fi and restaurants, including the popular Beach Bum. It’s also within walking distance to the beautiful Grand Anse beach and close to Spiceland Mall, which is touted at Grenada’s premier shopping venue.  Because it’s located outside of the city center, a water taxi from the cruise pier is a quick and easy way to get to the Market.

Spiceland Mall – 4 miles from port, in The Lime

With over 30 modern stores at “Grenada’s premier shopping center,” you can find electronics, groceries, banking and men’s and women’s clothing. There is also a food court with local and American choices. It is close to the popular Grand Anse beach and less than a mile from the Grand Anse Craft and Spice Market.

Dining In St. George’s – Grenada

In Grenada, food is tied to history and culture, with a mix of African,  Indian and British influences, and being knowns as the Spice Island, gives it a rich and tasty culinary scene.

Here are some must-try dishes and foods:

Oil Down – Grenada’s national dish – is an hours-long simmered stew of meats or fish, vegetables, plantains, spices and coconut made in large steel pots so there’s enough to share.

Saltfish and Bake – this combination of rehydrated salted fish and fried bread is often topped with fresh vegetable toppings and chutneys

Soup – Pigeon Pea or Callaloo – hearty soups with meat and vegetables

Roti and Doubles – these street foods are popular around the West Indies. Roti is a flatbread wrap filled with curried meat or veggies. Doubles are round fried bread filled usually with curried chickpeas and topped with sweet and spicy chutney.

Nutmeg Ice Cream & Local Chocolate – satisfy your sweet tooth with ice cream made with the island’s most popular spice, and chocolate made with local cocoa. Sugar & Spice Ice Cream has been making local ice cream since 1985. You can find it at The Esplanade Mall or Spiceland Mall.

There are many food carts and street food vendors in the tourist areas of Grenada. Make sure you go to places that are busy with locals and make sure hot food is served piping hot and cold food is served cold.

The Esplanade Mall , which are the shops at the cruise port, has a few restaurants in its food court including a bagel shop, Subway, fried chicken and a couple of sweets and pastries shops.

Taste of the Tropics   – the small restaurant is within view of the pier and serves fish, burgers, wraps and fresh juices and smoothies.

Deyna’s Tasty Foods – this is located on Melville St. (the same as the cruise terminal) near the Market and offers traditional Caribbean meals.

360 Degrees Grill & Lounge – 0.6 miles from port, Old Fort Road. A 15 minute walk up the hill. With a laid back atmosphere and amazing views, you will have offerings of grilled chicken, pork, steak, shrimp and lobster.

BB’s Crabback – located a half mile from the cruise port, on the other side of Fort George, this popular restaurant is known for the Grenada specialty crabback, land crab meat mixed with spices and cheese sauce and baked inside a crab shell. Also be sure to try the pumpkin fritters. In addition, they have port and perfectly seasoned fish, so this is a spot busy with locals.

Sails Restaurant and Bar – located beside BB’s Crabback – 15 minute walk from cruise terminal. Sails Restaurant serves local cuisine, with a heavy emphasis on seafood and Caribbean style offerings. They also have vegetarian options. The views from the waterside restaurant are wonderful.

Things To Do in St. George’s – Grenada

Grenada is often underrated as a Caribbean island, but it has so much to offer. It’s cultivation of spices, cocoa and production of rum make it a delight for foodies. Nature lovers will appreciate its beaches, jungle hikes and amazing waterfalls, and history aficionados will enjoy visiting the museums, cultural center and war-era forts. And because of the small size of the island, you could fit in more than one adventure in a day!

Check out the Grenadian adventures of this family, who have been fortunate enough to take the year off to travel the world!

Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve

This national park covers 3,816 acres. Its name is derived from French meaning “large lake.” In the center of Granada, the park has a huge crater lake that was formed from an extinct volcano. A great place to go hiking, the rainforest that surrounds the lake has colorful tropical birds, rare flowers and trails that lead around the area’s waterfalls. Hikes can range from easy to rugged and from a few minutes to several hours. You can explore the flora and fauna in the Forest Reserve with it’s informative written guides. Check out these tours and excursions for Grand Etang National Park!

River Antoine Rum Distillery

Visit the oldest working water-propelled distillery in Grenada and the wider Caribbean. Operating since 1785, this distillery makes a strong rum from local organically grown ingredients. The distillery is powered either by hand or from the nearby river. You will be given a free sample at the end of your tour, but watch the proof if you plan on purchasing some and have to fly home. Some of the rum is so strong, it is banned from aircraft. You can purchase tour tickets here.

House of Chocolate Grenada

The House of Chocolate is a mini-museum/cafe that gives you a history of chocolate. They hand-craft their creations onsite and offer tastes as well as baked goods and ice cream for purchase.

Fort Matthew and Fort Frederick

Located beside each other, these Forts represent Grenada’s complicated history.

Fort Frederick is a bastion type fort. A bastion is a fortification that was styled when gunpowder and cannons dominated a battle. From the top of Richmond Hill, Fort Frederick gives you a 360° view of St. George’s.

Fort Matthew is the largest fort on the island but is falling into disrepair. Once a battle ground, the fort was then used as an insane asylum. You will be able to see the kitchens, bathrooms, underground tunnels and the cells that held patients. The views from this elevation are amazing.

Resort Day Pass

Enjoy the beautiful white sand beach with all the amenities of a luxury resort with a resort day pass. Pools, with complimentary poolside drinks and snacks, complementary lunch and WiFi, or upgrade to a spa package or private day room! Click here for more details.

Grand Anse Beach

Very popular with travelers, this almost 2 mile beach has white sand and is ideal for swimming. Located along the southwest coast, you will also find opportunities for water sports, restaurants  and a vendors market at this location.

Morne Rouge (BBC) Beach

The Morne Rouge is also known as the BBC beach; there are fewer people here than at Grand Anse. The water is shallow and the beach is sandy.  Rocky’s, a beach bar, is in close proximity and a great place for a meal and a drink.

La Sagesse Beach

If you are looking for something more secluded, this is the beach for you. It is about 25 minutes from downtown St. George’s and has both stretches of sand and hiking trails. One end of the beach has a salt pond that is fringed with mangroves and is a great spot for birdwatching.

St. George's Grenada

The port of St George is located in the south of the island of Grenada . Grenada alternated between French and British territory. Grenada gained sovereignty in 1974. The army that sympathized with the Russians took power in 1983. The United States and Caribbean allies invaded the island to drive the army and communists out of power.

The spice industry is important in Grenada. Nutmeg is mainly grown here.

A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.
