The Gories Reunite for Tour

By Tom Breihan

Image may contain Tie Accessories Accessory Musical Instrument Guitar Leisure Activities Bass Guitar and Human

In the late 80s and early 90s, the scuzzed-out Detroit trio the Gories , along with peers like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the New Bomb Turks, reinvented classic 60s garage rock as something dirtier and more confrontational, pushing a tinge of punk menace into the mix. The band broke up in 1992; Mick Collins went on to lead the Dirtbombs , while guitarist Dan Kroha did time in the Demolition Doll Rods .

But the Gories are back. They reunited last year for a few shows, and they'll launch back into action this summer, taking the time-tested chaos of their live show across North America. Dates below.

The Gories:

07-15 Ottawa, Ontario - Ottawa Blues Festival 07-16 Toronto, Ontario - Lee's Place 07-17 Montreal, Quebec - Cabaret Du Mile End 07-29 Hoboken, NJ - Maxwell's 07-30 New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom 07-31 New York, NY - Lincoln Center (Ponderosa Stomp) 09-07 San Diego, CA - The Casbah * 09-08 Los Angeles, CA - The Echo * 09-09 San Francisco, CA - The Independent * 09-10 Portland, OR - Dante's Musicfest *^ 09-11 Seattle, WA - Neumos *

Shows of the Week: The Gories Will Rock You

What to see and what to hear..

gories band tour

SUNDAY, NOV. 5:

No history of American garage rock is complete without The Gories . Hailing from Detroit—a city with a storied tradition of feral, primal rock ‘n’ roll, from the MC5 to the Stooges to Funkadelic—the Gories updated ‘60s-style garage rock in the ‘80s by turning up the bluesiness and dialing down the sophistication to near-Stone Age levels of primitivism. Upon reuniting in 2009, the trio entered a second phase as a formidable touring act whose shows are a testament to the power of rudimentary rock noise. Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie Ave. 8 pm. $25. All ages.

MONDAY, NOV. 6:

Oklahoma sludge-rock band Chat Pile has made American industrial and infrastructural decay its primary subject, and frontman Raygun Busch tackles it with gusto and good humor. Despite the gnarly riffs and even gnarlier subject matter on their debut album, God’s Country , there’s something fundamentally endearing about the band, and their goofy stage names have as much to do with it as their obvious empathy for Americans who didn’t ask to be born in a crumbling late-capitalist empire. Star Theater, 13 NW 6th Ave. 8 pm. $25. All ages.

TUESDAY, NOV. 7:

Earl Sweatshirt performs as if the act of rapping is the only thing keeping him standing on two feet. Since debuting more than a decade ago as Odd Future’s teen prodigy, the 29-year-old MC has sharpened his bars while thickening the production haze around them, resulting in some truly soupy and cryptic music (and polarizing—“East” is a litmus test for rap fans). Comfortable in the knowledge that he’s one of the most technically gifted rappers of his generation, Earl does whatever the hell he wants. Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside St. 8 pm. $35. All ages.

Excellent show, we were dancing (and sometimes moshing) at the front! Mick's guitar work was exceptional, the song choices were terrific, and in short the Gories are a great band live.

THE GORIES + DETROIT COBRAS

The emergence of the Gories heralded a new Golden Age of Detroit rock beginning in the late '80s; a renaissance of noise and rustbelt rock that lasts through to today. Formed in 1986 by three Detroit natives -- Mick Collins, Peg O'Neill, and Dan Kroha (none of whom previously knew how to play an instrument) -- the Gories took their name from a band of the same name that appeared in the Gidget series of the late '50s/early '60s. Comprised of two guitarists and a drummer (i.e., no bass), the Gories concocted a primal, raw yet soulful blend of garage punk, culling a wealth of inspiration and cover material from Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, and John Lee Hooker. The three-piece also paid homage to the Keggs and Nick & the Jaguars, two other bassless bands from Detroit.

The Gories began their recorded career in 1987 with two tracks on the Wanghead compilation It Came from the Garage II, the same compilation that featured Nine Pound Hammer (who would go on to become Nashville Pussy). Len Punch, the owner of Wanghead, recorded and released their first album, Houserockin', in 1989. According to legend, these first Gories recordings were executed in a tin shack. For their second album, Alex Chilton of Big Star joined them as producer, recording I Know You Fine, But How You Doin' for the French label New Rose. Throughout this entire period, the band continued to release various 7" singles, including a cover of Spinal Tap's "Give Me Some Money" for the Sub Pop Singles Club. In 1992, Crypt released Outta Here, their third album and what would be their last for some time to come.

Following an especially tumultuous European tour, the Gories broke up unceremoniously. Mick Collins continued to perform in Blacktop, King Sound Quartet, the Screws, and the Dirtbombs, and contributed to Andre Williams' Silky and The Black Godfather and Speedball Baby's Uptight. Dan Kroha spent some time in Rocket 455, the gender-bending bassless trio the Demolition Doll Rods, and Danny and the Darleens, as well as playing solo and making multiple cameo appearances. Peg O'Neill recorded a few tracks with '68 Comeback and played for a time with New Orleans act the Darkest Hours.

In 2009, the Gories reunited to play a handful of shows with their former sister band, the Oblivians, who were also re-forming after a lengthy hiatus. Shows in Detroit, Memphis, and throughout Europe that summer led to more sporadic Gories shows in the years that followed, bringing the band out of a decidedly disbanded phase into a state of semi-activity. In late 2013 a live album entitled The Shaw Tapes surfaced, comprised of gritty audio from a sparsely attended 1988 gig at a rented storefront outside of Detroit. The live album was released on Third Man Records, label of the White Stripes' Jack White, an outspoken fan of the Gories and someone whose music was deeply influenced by the band.

Jason momoa jams out with his kids at hollywood concert, jason momoa turns concert into family affair ... daughter sings, son on guitar.

Jason Momoa 's got one musically gifted family ... bringing his kids onstage with him during his band's Hollywood show in footage obtained by TMZ.

The actor took the Sunset Room Hollywood stage -- a venue just off the Hollywood Walk of Fame in L.A. -- with his group ÖOF TATATÁ ... and check out the vid, 'cause he also shares a pretty great moment with his kiddos.

The video starts with JM playing on his own before transitioning to a shot of him face-to-face with his son -- 15-year-old Nakoa-Wolf -- strumming on a guitar.

Jason's son's really starting to look a lot like him ... same dark hair and even going with a similar-looking tank top for the show.

Then, JM's daughter 16-year-old Lola took to the mic onstage ... belting out Amy Winehouse 's "Valerie" -- a pretty difficult song to sing well, but one she absolutely crushes.

Jason shares both kids with his ex Lisa Bonet , mom to actress Zoë Kravitz too. The pair married in 2017 and were together long before tying the knot but divorced in 2022.

It's a nice little reconnection for Jason and the kids .. as we've told you Jason's been busy on the road, traveling to Nashville to play some shows last month where video caught him locking lips with gal pal Adria Arjona.

But, Jason had his dad hat on Friday ... and, his family crushed the show like a modern-day Jackson 5.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

On March 21st, 2024, the Dirt Band will kick off the first leg of their last traditionally scheduled gigs, ALL THE GOOD TIMES: The Farewell Tour. No need to fret, this isn’t goodbye forever, but it will be the last fans see of multi-city runs and long bus rides from the group that helmed the multi-artist Will The Circle Be Unbroken series that featured the likes of Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Levon Helm, and dozens more.

“‘All The Good Times’ perfectly describes our career,” said the band in a statement this week. “Playing our music for Dirt Band fans all over the world has been an incredible experience for us. The most important part of that has been the connection to our audience—that beautiful communal give and take is like nothing else. That's the very spirit we'll be celebrating as we head into our farewell tour. We really look forward to seeing you folks. Good times will be had by all!”

About Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: With one of the best lineups in the group’s storied history, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, featuring founding members Jeff Hanna (lead vocals, guitar) and Jimmie Fadden (drums, harmonica, vocals); longtime bandmate Bob Carpenter (keys, vocals)—a member since 1980; along with Jim Photoglo (bass, vocals); Jaime Hanna (guitar, vocals); and Ross Holmes (fiddle, mandolin, vocals); remains one of the most accomplished bands in American roots music. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played their first gig in 1966 in Southern California as a jug band and by 1969 had become a cornerstone of the burgeoning country-rock community. Their career breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of the record Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy and the single “Mr. Bojangles,” a folksy Top 10 pop hit that brought roots music to the national forefront. In 1972, they released the first of three groundbreaking Will The Circle Be Unbroken records, collaborating with many of the best bluegrass, country, and folk artists in the world. The band also has enjoyed vast success on the U.S. Country charts with hits like "Fishin' In The Dark," "Modern Day Romance," and "Long Hard Road." The Dirt Band are GRAMMY, CMA, and IBMA Award winners, and their Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & Friends - Fifty Years, Circlin' Back! for PBS was an Emmy Award-winning television special. The Dirt Band’s latest album, Dirt Does Dylan—released in 2022—has received widespread critical acclaim. More at nittygritty.com/history.

Dogstar is getting ready to hit the road.

The rock band, which features bassist Keanu Reeves , guitarist/vocalist Bret Domrose and drummer Rob Mailhouse, announced dates for their upcoming Summer Vacation Tour 2024 on June 5.

"We are stoked to announce a new North American headline tour this August & September," read a post on the trio's social media page.

Kicking off Aug. 8 at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, the tour will make stops throughout the United States and Canada before wrapping Sept. 21 at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Hotel & Casino in Maricopa, Arizona.

"We are having the best time out here on the road interacting with fans at these shows, we wanted to keep it going," said the band in a statement about the tour. "For this next U.S. run starting in August, we will be planning to try out some new songs as well — hope to see you out there!”

Tickets first become available through a presale on June 5 at noon local time, before the general onsale begins June 7 at 10 a.m. local time.

Following a 20-year hiatus, Dogstar returned to the stage for the first time last May at BottleRock Festival in Napa Valley, California. The band's new album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees , is out now.

"When we reunited to try to write some songs, we never knew what an amazing journey we were beginning," said the band in a statement.

"The way this record came together was nothing short of magical for us," continued the trio. "The fun, the passion and the friendship shines through on these recordings and hopefully the variety of emotions will connect and resonate with everyone the way they do for us."

The Black Keys and managers Irving Azoff and Steve Moir have parted ways after the sudden and thoroughly publicized cancellation of the band’s North American arena tour previously scheduled for the fall.

A rep for Azoff confirmed the split to Variety late Thursday, calling it an “amicable parting”; a rep for the group did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The news was first reported by the New York Times.

While live-entertainment companies have reported record revenues in the two years since pandemic restrictions fully lifted and top tours continue to do extremely well, that rush has clearly cooled off for artists below the very top tiers. 2023 may come to be regarded as a watershed year, with Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Drake, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and others thundering across North America. But ticket prices have also reached a new peak, and combined with the bad press the industry has received amid the Justice Department’s recently filed but long-expected antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster owner Live Nation, many fans have apparently decided to be more selective with their spending.

Jon Bon Jovi says 'Forever' pays homage to The Beatles, his wife and the working class

gories band tour

As the lights faded in a ballroom of the Los Angeles Convention Center, a wallop of guitar and drums rang through the room.

Jon Bon Jovi, sleek in all black, took his rightful place center stage as drummer Tico Torres, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Hugh McDonald and guitarists John Shanks and Phil X launched into an anthemic intro of “Whoa-oh-oh-ohs.”

The audience who had come to honor Bon Jovi’s philanthropic efforts at the annual MusiCares gala glanced around with puzzled looks.

Was this a new Bon Jovi song? If so, were they debuting it as the opening salvo at a glitzy Grammys charity event when the MusiCares honoree doesn't usually perform until the end of the night? And was that Paul McCartney sitting at a front table pumping his first along to the very-Bon-Jovi chorus?

Yes, yes and yes.

“Legendary,” the first single from Bon Jovi’s 16 th studio album “Forever,” out June 7, received its christening in a room that included McCartney , Bruce Springsteen , Melissa Etheridge, Shania Twain and numerous other music VIPs.

A few weeks later, the infectious pop rock song lyrically rooted in Bon Jovi's trademarks of loyalty, friendship and a blue-collar ethos began its steady chart climb , eventually landing in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales and Adult Contemporary charts.

It was an auspicious rollout for the band’s first album since “2020” as well as the first for frontman Jon Bon Jovi since undergoing vocal cord surgery in 2022.

During a recent interview about the band’s four-part Hulu documentary, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” Bon Jovi, 62, also shared some insight into a few of the songs on “Forever.”

Bon Jovi is still rocking the talk box

The second single from the album, the rhythmically pumping “Living Proof," is coated with another Bon Jovi hallmark – the talk box, which the band reinvigorated from its ‘70s-era origins on its signature smash, “Livin’ on a Prayer,” and bowed to again for 2000’s “It’s My Life.”

“I will give Richie (Sambora) full compliments for commandeering the talk box in 1986,” Bon Jovi says of the band’s original guitarist and frequent song collaborator . “We both knew it of course from (Peter) Frampton and Joe Walsh, but I would think from ’86 forward that instrument belongs to Richie and to Bon Jovi using it again.”

Bon Jovi is careful to credit his forebears for the distinctive wonky sound created by the mouth device and says he returns to the credo his mother told him: “Find out who your influence's influences were … because now if anyone says oh, the talk box, that’s Bon Jovi. No.”

Jon Bon Jovi writes a love letter to his wife

The ninth track on “Forever,” the piano ballad “I Wrote You a Song,” is a sweet testimony of love shaded with insecurity.

“How could it ever be beautiful enough?” Bon Jovi sings in a slightly strained voice.

The target of his affection is obvious, he says. His wife of 35 years , Dorothea.

Words including “I can’t give you the ocean or the sky/the wonders of the world can’t compare to you/I did the only thing I know how to do – I wrote you a song,” as well as the melody, came to Bon Jovi in the middle of the night.

“I had a notebook next to my bed,” he recalls, “which I sometimes do when I’m in a place where I’m writing and I know that position well – in your underwear on the side of the bed, asleep with a pen in your hand and scribbling and you wake up to see every single word of that first verse and the melody written.”

Bon Jovi shared the lyrics with co-writer Billy Falcon but still fretted about landing the perfect title.

“Billy said, ‘I Wrote You a Song’ and I was like, ‘Ah!.’ The simplest thing you could possibly say.”

Bon Jovi salutes The Beatles’ ‘A Day in the Life’

The dozen songs on “Forever” balance between ballads and barroom stompers. “Seeds” is one of the most memorable for its hook and fantastical ending that pays homage to The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.”

Bon Jovi says he was inspired to write the song while looking out of the window of his Manhattan apartment and watching the people wandering around in a park. “There are 100 stories happening right now and these people don’t even know that their stories are intersecting at this moment,” he remembers thinking at the time.

He credits his “current self-help way” of “trying to get back to joy” for inspiring the image of seeds “trying to find our place in the weeds.”

The song rockets to a swirling strings-and-drums climax that is reminiscent of The Beatles’ ingenious concoction that caps their “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. “Seeds” wraps with a sustained chord, similar to the one that famously closes “A Day in the Life.”

“From inception, I knew what I wanted (with the song) and it was absolutely ‘A Day in the Life,’” Bon Jovi says. He enlisted noted composer David Campbell to arrange the strings.

“I full-on wanted the George Martin, Beatles-esque climb. And I think we achieved it,” Bon Jovi says.

Jon Bon Jovi is hardly a 'Hollow Man'

The closing song on “Forever,” the contemplative “Hollow Man,” might concern fans with its ruminative lyrics over mournful slide guitar.

“What do you sing when the song’s been sung?/Who do you fight when the war is won?/What do you write when the book is done?” Bon Jovi wonders, then later in the song, “How does it work when the words don’t come?”

It might sound like a declaration of defeat, but Bon Jovi isn’t swaggering into the sunset.

Touring remains uncertain because of his self-mandate that his voice is fit enough to perform a 2 ½-hour concert four nights a week. But he’s continuing to rebuild his vocal strength and maintain his optimism.

“Every day,” Bon Jovi says, “I work at it.”
