4-Day 'Add-on' Georgian Cuisine & Wine Tour (Tbilisi & Sighnaghi) - Private Charter Bus

Georgian cuisine, tbilisi.

Georgia is well-known for its outstanding and delectable cuisine. Georgian food is arguably one of the world’s most unsung cuisines, showcasing flavours from Greece and the Mediterranean, and influences from Turkey and Persia. Georgian food is quite appropriately an expression of the country's generous  hospitality and culture. Warm, gooey comfort food like khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) finds balance with matsoni (yogurt). Herbs such as tarragon, flat parsley, dill and coriander combine with walnuts and garlic for interesting fillings and sauces.  The variety is endless, delicious and a joy to explore!

Kakheti, the Cradle of Wine

Georgia has an 8000-year history of winemaking culture.  The oldest wine vessels and grape seeds were discovered over 8000 years ago, proving to be conclusive evidence of wine production in the Kakheti region.  This is why Georgia is referred to as the Cradle of Wine. Georgian traditional wine making way in underground Qvevri has had UNESCO cultural heritage status since 2013. Qvevri wine-making is practised throughout Georgia, particularly in village communities where unique varieties of grapes are grown. The Qvevri is an egg-shaped earthenware vessel used for making, ageing and storing the wine. Knowledge and experience of Qvevri manufacture and wine-making are passed down by families, neighbours, friends and relatives, all of whom join in communal harvesting and wine-making activities. In Georgia there are 500 different grape varietals , from which the best quality wines are produced.

Some examples of Georgian wine are:

Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Kindzmarauli, Titska-Tsolikauri, Khvanchkara, Tvishi, Usakhelauri, Ojaleshi and others.

A Tour Through The North Georgia Mountains

Local riders rave about motorcycle roads in North Georgia.  If you’re surprised, then you probably aren’t from these parts.  No problem.  This scenic three-day tour shows off some of the best motorcycle roads and well-known destinations in northern Georgia.  You’ll want to put this tour on your short list.

Starting in the capital city of Atlanta, the ride takes a wide loop north through the Chattahoochee National Forest stretching into North Carolina where it then turns south to follow the Savannah River on the South Carolina side.  Turning back into Georgia, the ride runs through Augusta and then on to Atlanta.  Ride time and miles are comfortable for virtually any rider, leaving plenty of time to enjoy small towns and sights along the way.  The combination of Georgia country roads and Appalachian Mountain twistiness makes this a must ride for any motorcyclist.

What to Expect

Riding in Georgia can best be described as relaxingly picturesque.  The roads have a southern feel; narrow with slight shoulders and shrouded in Georgia pines and oaks.  Twists come in bursts separated by relaxing stretches through quiet forest and wide meadowlands.  Elevation changes are gradual and extend over miles never seriously challenging a competent sport touring rider. Sky Valley, the highest point on this ride and the highest town in Georgia, has an elevation of only a little more than 3100 feet.

Weather in Georgia can change quickly.  Summer temperatures are in the upper 80’s with characteristic southern humidity making it feel even warmer.  Hard short rains often come in the afternoons along with the potential for lightening.  Always check the forecast before setting out and gear-up accordingly.  As on any ride, easily removed layers are recommended for quick adjustments to accommodate changing conditions.

Motorcycle rider rounding a turn

Roads on this tour are all paved.  However, many roads in Georgia (and the Carolinas for that matter) feature an abundance of tar snakes which can become slippery when wet and when softened up in a hot sun.  Unexpected gravel or sand kicked up from adjoining driveways is also a regular risk given.  Take sensible precautions when riding unfamiliar roads.

With so many small towns along the way, there are plenty of local coffee shops and cafes to choose from.

Atlanta to Helen Through The Chattahoochee National Forest

This first day of riding features some of North Georgia’s best motorcycle roads in the famed Chattahoochee National Forest with stops in picturesque towns including Ellijay, Blue Ridge, and Helen.  But first one must escape the congested city of Atlanta.

Most people agree traffic in the greater Atlanta area is just plain bad.  To avoid spending a good part of the riding day in traffic leave Atlanta for Braselton on US-85 as early as possible.  From there the roads improve steadily with the best parts coming after Gainesville.  The woodsy run along GA-52 between the junction with GA-136 and Ellijay offers a short respite from rural scenery, but better roads lie ahead.

Map showing tour route from Atlanta to Chatsworth.

Follow GA-382 to GA-136 to loop around the south end of Carters Lake and the Reregulation Reservoir.  While not on the main tour route, a stop at Carters Lake Visitor Center is only a little more than 2 miles off GA-136 on Carters Dam Road.  Information about the history of Carters Lake, the dam, and the surrounding area are all on display.  Views of the dam itself, the largest earthen dam east of the Mississippi, are available from multiple vista points near the Visitor Center.

From Carters Lake ride up to Chatsworth past Dennis along the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest.  Chatsworth sits at the entrance to the Appalachian Mountains in northwest Georgia.  With plenty of restaurant options Chatsworth makes an ideal lunch stop before heading into the forest.

Leave Chatsworth on GA-52.  The first 12 miles comprise a section of the Cohutta-Chattahoochee Scenic Byway and arguably are the most enjoyable section of the byway’s 54 miles.  This noteworthy road winds up and down through the Chattahoochee National Forest offering picture-worthy vistas of rolling hills and the Cohutta Mountains.  Take in gentle curves separated by pockets of attention getting 25MPH twisties.

Aerial view of Carters Lake Dam.

The Fort Mountain Overlook, although not marked, is easy to spot and a recommended stop.  The views to the valley and mountains are inspiring.   A loop through Fort Mountain State Park just a little farther up the road provides even more views of the Cohutta Mountains and the possibility of spotting a black bear.  The area around the park was once home to Cherokee Indians where it’s believed they constructed a stone wall near the crest of the mountain.  Some historians argue the wall was built by the Cherokee to defend the area while others say it served a spiritual purpose.

Another 5 miles or so up the road, look for the Cohutta Overlook.  Pull in to take one more look at the panoramic views of the wide valley and Cohutta Mountains below.  The overlook is off the highway and easy to miss – watch for the US Forest Service sign on the left that marks the entrance.  Cohutta Overlook also marks the end of the scenic byway, but more good riding lies ahead on GA-52 as it twists and turns through the Cohutta Mountains.

Follow GA-52 to Ellijay, known as the Apple Capital of Georgia with its surrounding orchards.  Plan a ride in the fall to enjoy fresh apples from pop-up fruit stands dotting the roadside.

Map showing tour route from Chatsworth to Helen.

Turn north on Old Highway 5 toward Blue Ridge.  This unremarkable highway takes the ride to Old US Highway 76 on the north end of Blue Ridge Lake and then continues to GA-60.

Blue Ridge is a popular mountain get-away in the Chattahoochee National Forest.  The town offers an assortment of craft breweries, restaurants, and other tourist activities.  One of the most popular attractions being a 4-hour scenic train ride in the southern Appalachian Mountains along the Toccoa River to the town of McCaysville on the Georgia-Tennessee state line.

Shortly after crossing the Blue Ridge Dam the highway becomes GA-60 and so begins another of Georgia’s best motorcycle roads.  Sections of this road are positively enchanting with well-spaced tight curves and crowded shoulders framed by the Chattahoochee National Forest on either side.  The pace continues through Suches and past Woody Lake.  This is Georgia high-country albeit at a relatively modest elevation under 3000 feet.

Georgia riders refer to the roads around Suches as “Georgia’s Tail of the Dragon”. In fact the “dragon” is a triangular loop stretching from Suches southeast on GA-60 to US-19, then north on US-19, and then returning to Suches on GA-180.  The tour described in this article covers the first two segments of the loop, but not the return to Suches.  Some might argue GA-180 is the best part of the ride.  Feel free to turn left on GA-180 at Suches to find out.  This tour opts to cover two of three sections and leave the last, GA-180, for another time.

The pullout at Woody Gap, past Suches, is worth a stop for panoramic views of the North Georgia Mountains and the Yahoola Valley from an altitude of 3160 feet.  Beside picture-worthy vistas, Woody Gap also marks where the historic Appalachian Trail crosses Georgia’s Blue Ridge District.

Keep an eye out for US-19 about 7 miles down the road from Suches where the ride turns north.  US-19 is another masterpiece of Georgia motorcycle roads running though yet more of the Chattahoochee Forest.  Vogel State Park along the way is one of the oldest parks in Georgia situated at 2500 feet above sea level in the shadow of Blood Mountain, the highest summit on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia.

Helen Georgia main street.

Turn off US-19 east on GA-180 and then take GA-348 to Helen.  GA-348, also known as the Richard B Russell Scenic Byway, brings the riding day to an end with flair.  The road throws an array of splendid curves, corners, and twists that are sure to be discussed over dinner.

A few pullouts, in particular the Dodd Creek Vista point, offer picture taking opportunities of the surrounding mountains and valleys.  For Appalachian Trail buffs, the historic Walasi-Yi Inn on US-19 marks a noteworthy trail crossing.  This is the only point where the 2175-mile Appalachian Trail literally passes through a man-made structure, earning the Walasi-Yi Inn a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

At the next junction, take GA75A to GA-75 into Helen where the day ends.  Helen is one of Georgia’s most popular getaway destinations.  Themed as a Bavarian-style town, Helen is filled with shops and restaurants of all kinds and a selection of comfortable accommodations.  If time allows, consider spicing up the day with tubing or zip lining.  Helen is known for outdoor activities.

Helen to Augusta Through the Carolinas

The second touring day begins in Helen, following a meandering northerly route, continuing through the Chattahoochee National Forest into North Carolina before cutting across the northeast corner of Georgia into South Carolina where the ride arrives in Augusta at the end of the day.

Leave Helen on GA-17, the final section of the Richard B Russell Scenic Byway, heading north toward Macedonia.  This quiet 2-laner is flanked by hills and trees with the Chattahoochee River running alongside the road.  The riding is easy for the most part, with a few curvy stretches here and there.

Map showing tour route from Helen to Augusta.

At Macedonia, take GA-2 to US-76 heading east.  Initially an unremarkable road, eventually US-76 crosses the Appalachian Trail and from that point begins to develop a more exciting personality.  Make a stop at Popcorn Overlook to capture views of the North Georgia mountains.

Rather than continue on US-76 to Clayton we chose a more interesting path.  Look for the junction with GA-197 about a half mile past Popcorn Overlook.  This road is decidedly more twisty as it winds south past Lake Burton.  At the south end of the lake, take Burton Dam Road east around the south end of the lake and then connect with Bridge Creek Road heading north again, eventually arriving in Clayton.  The fun-factor on this detour is absolutely worth the extra 24 miles.

Two motorcycles riding near Tallulah Falls Georgia.

The planned route bypasses the scenic town of Tallulah Falls.  For those who would like to experience this popular destination, take Seed Lake Road off Burton Lake Road for 12 miles to US-23.  Tallulah Falls is about 4 miles farther south.  The town of Tallulah Falls overlooks Tallulah Gorge which itself features a series of six stunning waterfalls and many hiking trails.  Tallulah Point Overlook is a favorite stop, offering views of the gorge and a gift shop.  Ride back to Clayton on US-23 to resume the planned route.

At Clayton, pick-up US-23 toward North Carolina.  At the small town of Dillard turn onto GA-246 eastward to Highlands North Carolina.  The road packs a good number of fast turns as it dips in and out of North Carolina before dropping south to Sky Valley Overlook.  At an elevation just under 3300 feet, Sky Valley is one of the higher points on the ride, but not the highest.  The view from the overlook down to Sky Valley shows an expanse extending from valley to forest to distant mountains.

View of valley and distant mountains from the Sky Valley Overlook.

Not long after Sky Valley Overlook, GA-246 enters North Carolina where It becomes NC-106 quietly passing through the Nantahala National Forest and occasional ranch land.  There are several worthwhile overlooks along the way offering even more photo opportunities.  If you have time for only one, try the Blue Valley Overlook.  The views are wide and endless. This is definitely a fun mountain road for motorcycling and a popular area for outdoor recreation.  It’s narrow and twisty enough to keep any rider smiling.

Continue on NC-106 across the south end of Lake Sequoyah and into Highlands North Carolina.  The small town of Highlands sits on a plateau in the Appalachian Mountains at an elevation of just over 4100 feet surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest.  With a small population of less than 1000, Highlands has yet to become the crossroads of trade between east and west that the founders envisioned in 1875.  Still, a nice stop for lunch or coffee.

Continue south, this time on NC-28 toward Georgia.  There are some fun sections as the road descends to the state line and rolls into Georgia toward Pine Mountain.  A short distance past Pine Mountain, GA-28 crosses the Chattooga River into South Carolina and becomes SC-28.  The ride on the South Carolina side of the river is loaded with wide turns along a road closed in on both sides by a variety of pine trees and other native species.

If time permits, consider a stop at Stumphouse Park for a cool-down in the Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel. This tunnel was started before the Civil War but never completed.  With a constant temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit Clemson University had used the tunnel to grow blue cheese for 20 years into the early 1970’s.

Eventually SC-28 rolls into Walhalla where the ride turns onto SC-183 and then SC-11 heading south.  The road twists and turns as it runs south more or less following the Savannah River to the west.  The scenery is intermittently marked by small towns tucked between stretches of relaxing tree covered roads.

Keep riding south toward Starr South Carolina, then on to Calhoun.  Unfortunately stops aren’t allowed on either side of the bridge that crosses Lake Hartwell; the view in either direction is incredible.

Riverwalk Park in Augusta Georgia.

Augusta is a good size city on the Savannah River in Georgia. Together with North Augusta on the South Carolina side the region is collectively known as the greater Augusta Georgia Metropolitan Area.  The historic Augusta downtown is in the City of Augusta on the Georgia side of the river.  There you can find a wide choice of restaurants and accommodations.  In addition to good dining, highlights in Augusta include the Augusta Historical Museum and the Augusta Riverwalk Park. All in all, a comfortable end to the second day of this tour.

West to Atlanta from Augusta

After two days riding in North Georgia forests and mountains, this last day of riding takes a less exhilarating route, but with some good scenery nonetheless and a few interesting bits of pavement as well.

Leave Augusta on US-78 westbound toward Atlanta.  This part of the day is about as uninteresting as they come, but keep the faith.  The ride gets better after the first 20 miles or so, just west of Harlem when the road narrows to a two-lane highway lined on either side by a mix of Georgia pines and maples.  Follow US-78 to Bearing and watch for Hobbs-Mill Road just past town toward Happy Valley.  The road passes unhurried through crop fields and ranch land separated by pockets of trees scattered here and there.

Map showing tour route from Augusta to Atlanta.

At Happy Valley, connect with GA-17 and then turn west on Happy Valley Road.  Happy Valley Road is rural, two lanes, and perfect for relaxing and taking in the views of central Georgia.  It’s not a twisty road, but somehow just right for riding.   Watch for Jewel Road, where the ride turns right eventually connecting with GA-16 which then leads to Sparta.

The town of Sparta was incorporated in 1805 and earned its name for the resolute bravery of its pioneering townspeople reminiscent of the ancient Greeks.  Later, during the Civil War, Sparta was at the crossroads of conflict.  The courage of its citizens once again saved the town from harm. Today, Sparta welcomes visitors offering a fine assortment of local restaurants perfect for a mid-day meal or late morning coffee.

From Sparta, follow GA-22 to Milledgeville, another Georgia town of historical significance.  Milledgeville, named for John Milledge the 26 th Governor of Georgia, was once the state capital owing to the cotton boom, its location on the Oconee River, and prosperous trade with Savannah down-river.  Today, the town stands as a rich reserve of early American antebellum architecture reflecting the pre-war period between the American Revolution and the Civil Wat.

From Milledgeville, follow GA-212 toward the Cedar Creek Wildlife Management Area in the Oconee National Forest.  The Cox-Mathis House, near the Cedar Creek Check Station is notable; built by a Revolutionary War veteran and believed to have been used by General Sherman’s troops on their march to Savannah.

Welcome sign at Piedmont Wildlife Refuge.

Turn left off GA-212 at Fullerton-Phillips Road heading south through the Oconee Forest.  These roads through the forest are not particularly twisty, but the solitude and scenery are fantastic. At Hillsboro, recognizable by the large cemetery that seems to consume the whole town, turn left on GA-11 and then right onto Sugar Hill Road. Eventually re-connect with GA-11 heading South and then take Round Oak Juliette Road west through the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge.

The Piedmont refuge is a 35,000 acre area to the south of the Oconee National Forest that was reclaimed and managed to health after forests were clearcut to make way for cotton farming only to be abandoned during the Great Depression.  Learn more about the area at the Visitor Center on Allison Lake Road.  Keep in mind that many side roads in the refuge are unpaved.

Juliette Road crosses the Ocmulgee River near the Juliette Dam.  The movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed in Juliette and on location at the dam.   The town economy was built on cotton and grain milling, but today largely depends on tourism.

Past the river, turn north on US-23 and then again onto GA-83 crossing the Ocmulgee River a second time to ride more of the Oconee Forest.   The road has a distinctly forest character, with trees packed-in close to the road for mile after mile.  Watch for Clay Road where the ride turns northwest continuing through the forest and then on to Fellowship Road (GA-16) and Harvey Lane Road before connecting with GA-212.  These roads offer a peek at life in rural Georgia.

Once on GA-212, it’s a direct route to Atlanta.  But GA-212 is not entirely without merit.  Trees line the road making the area feel far more isolated than it actually is.  Where the trees break away, well tended hay fields can be seen covering acres of land on either side of the road.

GA-212 crosses the northern section of Jackson Lake, which in reality is a reservoir created by the Lloyd Shoals Dam in 1910. Today the dam still produces electricity for the surrounding area.

Eventually GA-212 connects with US-20 leading into the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The Ride Doesn’t Have to End

Three days of riding in northern Georgia is not enough to cover every good road, but this tour rides some of the best.  The route was designed to give sport touring motorcyclists a taste of what Georgia has to offer.  There are still more roads to explore in the Peach State.

Two-lane road stretching into the distance.

So why not keep the party going?  There are plenty more good roads in Georgia and certainly in neighboring states.  The Appalachians and Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina have some of the most famous motorcycle roads in the world. Or take a ride east to Savannah and then up into the Carolinas.  Read Five Top Roads in the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains for more touring ideas in the wider area.

Unveiling the Peach State: Georgia’s Motorcycle Gems

Georgia, known as the Peach State, is a gem in the world of motorcycle riding. The state’s beautiful scenery, exciting roads, and pleasant climate make it a must-visit destination for motorcycle enthusiasts. I’ve gathered some essential information to help make your journey through Georgia even more enjoyable.

While the weather in Georgia is generally mild most of the year, the optimal time for a motorcycle ride is from late spring (May) to early fall (September) . This period offers warm temperatures, minimal rainfall, and gorgeous landscapes in full bloom.

To ensure you have memorable experiences, it’s important to plan some stops during your rides. Some great places to visit while you’re exploring Georgia on your motorcycle include:

  • Historic landmarks and buildings
  • Picturesque small towns and villages
  • Beautiful parks and scenic overlooks
  • Popular restaurants and eateries

The route’s challenge and difficulty level should never be overlooked when planning a motorcycle ride. In Georgia, you can find a variety of routes catering to different skill levels. Be sure to pick a route that suits your skill level and riding preferences.

Lastly, don’t forget to consider your motorcycle’s fuel range and the availability of gas stations along your chosen route. It’s also essential to keep safety gear like helmets, jackets, gloves, and boots in mind before setting off on your ride.

Overall, by considering these factors, you’re well on your way to uncovering some of Georgia’s true motorcycle gems.

1. Cherohala Skyway: Scenic Thrills Await

Cherohala Skyway

Cherohala Skyway is one of the best motorcycle rides in Georgia. This incredible route covers around 43 miles of scenic byways connecting Tellico Plains, Tennessee, with Robbinsville, North Carolina. What makes this ride truly memorable is the panoramic views, winding curves, and elevation changes.

The ideal time to experience the Cherohala Skyway on a motorcycle is between April and October , when you’ll find mild weather and colorful foliage. However, always be prepared for variable temperatures and remember that colder temperatures can occur at higher elevations even during the warmer months.

Riding the entire 43-mile stretch of Cherohala Skyway takes about 2 hours without any stops. But I’d highly recommend allocating at least half a day to fully enjoy the sights and attractions along the way.

Places to stop:

  • Santeetlah Overlook (milepost 8): Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Santeetlah and the surrounding mountains.
  • Huckleberry Knob (milepost 20.8): Hike a short trail to the highest point on the Skyway at 5,560 feet above sea level.
  • Hooper Bald (milepost 29): Explore a high-elevation meadow with native grasses and abundant wildflowers during summer months.

The Cherohala Skyway is a ride that falls under the moderate category of difficulty. With numerous winding curves and elevation changes, it’s best for those who are comfortable with navigating a motorcycle on mountain roads.

If you get hungry during your ride, there are limited dining options along the Skyway, so you might want to pack some snacks or plan a meal stop in either Tellico Plains or Robbinsville. Additionally, always keep an eye out for wildlife as deer and other animals are known to make appearances near the road.

2. North Georgia Mountains Loop: Twists and Turns

North Georgia Mountains Loop

I’ve found that one of the most exhilarating motorcycle rides in Georgia is the North Georgia Mountains Loop . This route takes you through some of the most picturesque landscapes, with plenty of twists and turns to thrill any rider.

The ideal time to take on this ride is during spring or fall . These seasons offer comfortable temperatures, beautiful foliage, and fewer tourists. Summer and winter can be pretty extreme, making riding conditions less than ideal.

The entire loop covers approximately 120 miles and can be completed in about 3-4 hours , depending on how many stops you choose to take along the way.

There are quite a few noteworthy spots to stop at during your ride. Some of my favorites include:

  • Dahlonega : A historic gold-mining town with lovely architecture and interesting shops to explore
  • Amicalola Falls State Park : Home to Georgia’s tallest waterfall, Amicalola Falls, this park has numerous hiking trails and fantastic scenery
  • Chattahoochee National Forest : This vast forest offers breathtaking views, picnic areas, and various recreational opportunities
  • Blairsville : A small town with a friendly atmosphere, Blairsville is an excellent place to grab a bite or refuel before continuing your journey

I’d say this loop is best suited to intermediate riders due to its numerous twists and turns. It’s essential to remain cautious and attentive, as weather conditions and changes in road surfaces can create unpredictable situations.

When planning your trip through the North Georgia Mountains Loop, it’s helpful to know that:

  • The route is well-maintained with mostly smooth asphalt, making it a pleasure to ride on
  • There are ample gas stations and restaurants along the way, but it’s always wise to keep your gas tank full and carry some snacks for those more remote stretches
  • Cell phone reception can be spotty in certain areas, so be prepared with maps or a GPS device
  • On weekends, especially during peak seasons, be prepared for some increased traffic from other motorcyclists and tourists exploring the gorgeous mountain roads

  • Helton Creek Falls : Refresh yourself in the cascading waters of this serene waterfall, just a short hike from the main road.

Navigating the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway is considered a moderate ride in terms of difficulty. While it’s packed with fun twists and turns, riders should watch out for the occasional tight curve and local wildlife crossing the road.

In addition to the beautiful scenery and engaging ride, there are a few other things to note:

  • Elevation : This route reaches elevations of up to 3,315 feet, offering unmatched views of surrounding peaks.
  • History : Named after Georgia’s longest-serving U.S. Senator, this highway has been a popular spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts since its completion in 1996.
  • Safety Tips : This scenic route is frequented by various users, so keep an eye out for hikers, cyclists, and wildlife sharing the road. Additionally, cell service can be spotty, so it’s essential to plan ahead and inform someone of your trip.

Riding the Georgia Triangle

Where the best line between two points is a curve

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

Formed roughly 480 million years ago, the Appalachians are a chain of mountains that stretch from Newfoundland, Canada, down to central Alabama. Eons of erosion have rounded and softened their edges, and rivers and creeks have cut deep creases within their slopes. The result is a nearly endless variety of roads that follow the contours of the land, attracting motorcyclists from far and wide like moths to a flame.

The Appalachian Trail begins in North Georgia, on Springer Mountain, not far from one of the best riding loops in the Southeast. The three sides of the Georgia Triangle are anything but straight. In fact, the triangular loop made up of U.S. Route 19 and Georgia State Routes 60 and 180 has some of the most challenging curves and best scenery in a region known for both.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

View/download the Georgia Triangle route on REVER

The Georgia Triangle is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains just north of the charming, historic mountain town of Dahlonega. The three-road loop is located within the Chattahoochee National Forest, and there’s an abundance of streams, waterfalls, lush forests, and historic sites in the area. Add in numerous tourist attractions, activities, hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, campgrounds, and eateries, and you’ve got everything you need for a great day ride or a long weekend of exploration.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

Six miles north of Dahlonega, the triangle begins where U.S. 19 meets State Route 60 at Stonepile Gap. Within the junction’s roundabout is a mound of stones that is said to mark the burial spot of Cherokee Princess Trahlyta. According to legend, Trahlyta was a beautiful princess kidnapped by a Cherokee warrior she refused to marry. Her dying wish was to be buried near her home on the mountain, though she probably didn’t imagine her grave would be surrounded by a ring of asphalt.

Riding north on Route 60 toward the town of Suches is the first leg of the triangle. If you have not been practicing your cornering skills, be cautious. These roads are not for the faint of heart. They can either be exhilarating or nerve-wracking, depending on your motorcycle’s cornering clearance and your comfort with tight S-curves and decreasing-radius turns. For the alert, confident rider, these roads offer an unforgettable riding experience, with gorgeous scenery and well-maintained pavement.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

About 5 miles up Route 60 is Woody Gap, and a look to the left reveals an expansive valley with Springer Mountain rising on the other side. The Appalachian Trail crosses the road nearby, and other stops on the road have signs and information about Civil War battles, gold mining sites, and hiking trails.

In the small town of Suches is a well-known motorcycle lodge and campground called Two Wheels of Suches , a popular meet-up spot. On weekends the parking lot is filled with bikes of all styles and vintages, and riders from all over. There’s an onsite restaurant that serves burgers, sandwiches, snacks, and drinks on Friday nights and weekends. The main lodge offers rooms for rent, and there are small cabins and campsites with a bathhouse on the property. A single-person campsite is $15/night, cabins are $65/night, and lodge rooms are $75/night.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

A stone’s throw from Two Wheels of Suches is the junction with State Route 180, also known as Wolf Pen Gap Road. This segment of the ride is without a doubt the most challenging leg of the triangle, with more tight curves and steep grades per mile than any other paved road in Georgia. The first few miles are a sedate and primarily straight two-lane blacktop leading to Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area. When the lake’s emerald-green water is calm, it acts as a large reflecting pool for the mountains that surround it. And it is a particularly scenic spot in the fall when the leaves change color.

Once past the lake, the roller-coaster ride begins with a sign that says “Sharp Curves and Grades Next 5 Miles.” Route 180 snakes through the Sosebee Cove Scenic Area with speed limit signs on some curves reading as low as 10 mph, with nary a straight section of road. Stay sharp and heed the caution signs. The great thing about this section of the Georgia Triangle is that it’s only 11 miles long – the same length as the Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee – so you can ride it back and forth to your heart’s content.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

Just before Route 180 merges with U.S. Route 19, it passes by Lake Trahlyta, which is part of Vogel State Park. You can swim in the lake and stay in the park, which offers tent camping, RV sites, and rental cottages and yurts. Georgia is often hot and humid in the summer, even up in the mountains. I have stopped here on a hot day for a quick change and a swim, so pack your swimsuit.

Riding south on U.S. 19 is the last leg of the triangle. The road here is wider, with passing zones for easily and safely getting around slower traffic. Still, it has magnificent twisting sections of repeating S-curves and turns, great scenery, and worthwhile stops all the way back to the triangle’s starting point.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

Continuing to the junction with Route 60 yields total mileage around the triangle of about 36 miles. The travel time for a nonstop ride is about 90 minutes at a reasonable rate of speed, but why hurry? The beautiful forest ride and options for stops make a leisurely pace worthwhile. Or, follow the lead of many motorcyclists and repeat the loop or run it in reverse. You won’t be bored, I promise.

Part of what makes the Georgia Triangle such a target-rich destination is that it’s a hub for other great rides in the area. Route 60 is a joy to ride not just to Suches but beyond, all the way to Route 76. From there, head east to Hiawassee, the scenic town on Lake Chatuge, or west to Route 515, which becomes I-575 and takes you to Atlanta.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

If you’re looking to explore further, taking Route 60S (also known as Murphy Highway) northeast at Mineral Bluff into North Carolina will lead you to U.S. Route 74 and the town of Murphy, North Carolina. Continuing east on U.S. Route 64 is a scenic ride through the Hiawassee River and Lake Chatuge areas, and several roads connect back to the Georgia Triangle area.

Continuing north on U.S. 19 past Vogel State Park, Route 180 breaks away again and continues east. A short hop on 180 takes you to State Route 348, also known as the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway, another gem of a road. Or continue east on 180 to Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia (4,784 feet), which on a clear day offers a 360-degree view of four states.

Riding the Georgia Triangle best motorcycle ride

If you are planning a stay in the area, Dahlonega is a charming, historic town known for its history of gold exploration and mining. Legend has it that in the 1540s, Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto searched this area for El Dorado, the legendary lost city of gold. Dahlonega was the site of the second major U.S. gold rush in the early 1800s and still has active mines where visitors can pan for gold and gemstones. For lunch or dinner, I highly recommend the Smith House , which serves fried chicken, ham, sides, and desserts family-style, with platter after platter passed around long tables. Just to the east of Dahlonega is Helen, a quaint alpine-style village. Both towns offer many choices for lodging, dining, and shopping.

If you’re undecided about which road to ride first, throw a dart at the map – chances are wherever it lands, you’ll find a winner. North Georgia offers hundreds of miles of great roads to ride, and the Georgia Triangle is just the beginning.

Top 5 Best Motorcycle Rides in Georgia (2021 Riding Season Year-End Review)

georgia motorcycle tour

We looked at a full collection of 2021 motorcycle riding season data when millions of riders visited MotorcycleRoads.com to find the best motorcycles rides and routes in the USA , Canada, and abroad.  For over 20 years now, MotorcycleRoads.com has been documenting the best/most-popular motorcycle roads, routes, and rides and for about a decade, we have published annual reports after diving into the website's statistics (which routes are riders researching the most, which routes are getting the most photo/video/comment uploads, etc., etc.) to determine which of the motorcycle routes have risen to the top in motorcycle rider popularity.  We look at a complex set of factors (see Note 2 below) to determine which of the motorcycle rides in each of the states and US regions are the most popular and rated to be the best by motorcycle riders just like you.  Our very popular annual "Top Motorcycle Rides per Region" guides cover the best rides for each of the four official riding regions of the USA: the Northeast, the South, the Midwest, and the West.  This year we took things a step further and decided to gone one level deeper and develop guides outlining the Top 5 Best Motorcycle Rides in for the US states and so you are seeing one of those such guides on this page.

Georgia, is a state with great hill and mountain riding in its northern portion near particularly in where it borders South Carolina and Tennessee. Most of the best motorcycle rides in Georgia are in this northern region but it does have some popular rides that are further south around central Georgia and it's border with Alabama to the west.  So, starting from #5 and working our way down to the #1 best motorcycle ride in Georgia.

After reviewing an entire year of activity of Georgia motorcycle riders, here are the results:

Best motorcycle rides in Georgia 1

Note 1:   All facts and figures below were gathered in Dec of 2021 and will change over time as new motorcycle roads are added to the collection.  For an update listing, you can go to MotorcycleRoads.com at any time, search on a state of your choosing, and you'll be presented with a list of the best motorcycle roads in that state.  You can also search on the newest motorcycle routes to be registered in that state as well as sift through the routes based on other filters.  Some examples of filtered searches you can do is to filter results based on - only the routes in your state that have 5-star scenery ratings, or only routes with a 5-star driving excitement rating and at least a 3-star rating for scenery, etc. etc.

Note 2:   How were these popularity ratings calculated?  A motorcycle road’s popularity can be based on a wide variety of factors.  Our analysis considered some obvious indicators of motorcycle road popularity such each roads’ “Rider Rating” scores (star ratings) and which motorcycle road description pages were visited the most.  But, the analysis dug deeper and looked at some less obvious yet valuable indicators of a motorcycle road’s popularity such as how often a given motorcycle road was added to riders’ “To Ride” lists, how often a given motorcycle road was added to riders’ “Rode it” lists and enthusiasm indicators such how often photos and/or videos were uploaded for a given road and which roads are attracting the most buzz among motorcycle roads indicated by those roads that are receiving the most number of new/recent comments.  For the sake of being consistent and as objective as possible we use a popularity algorithm that “crunches those number” and allows us to develop a ranking of the popularity of each of the motorcycle roads used as a basis for this guide.

1. Introduction

Approaching the mountains that these routes cut through gives me the same feeling the first time I see the ocean or snow for the first time.  It takes my breath, my heart rate increases and my excitement grows, it is truly therapeutic compared to how I normally spend my time.

Imagine the wind in your face, the rumble of the engine beneath you, and the freedom to explore the beautiful North Georgia Mountains at your own pace. That’s the promise of North Georgia Motorcycle Routes. But why choose this region for your next ride?

 2. Why North Georgia for Motorcycling?

North Georgia isn’t just known for its southern hospitality; it’s a haven for motorcycle enthusiasts. Here, you’ll find a perfect blend of picturesque landscapes, challenging twists and turns, and a warm community of fellow riders. The rolling hills, dense forests, and serene lakes make it an ideal backdrop for your motorcycling adventure. I can without hesitation say, Georgia’s mountain landscape is some of the prettiest in the country.  Also, our roads are typically in good condition, Georgia has won the road smoothness award several times and it shows.  Plus there are several stops along these routes that welcome riders.  These stops include restaurants, convenience stores, and overnight lodging if needed.

3. Getting Started: Motorcycle Essentials

Before you hit the road, it’s essential to ensure your safety and comfort. Make sure your motorcycle is in top-notch condition, wear appropriate safety gear, and check the weather forecast. Planning is key to a successful ride. Safety to me is a way of life, I spend a lot of money on gear that should prevent or lessen certain types of injuries such as road abrasion and head or brain injury, etc.  All of us know, the inherent risks associated with riding motorcycles, so it makes sense to protect yourself where you can.  Also, be aware the road conditions experienced on one side of the mountain may vary on the opposite side of the mountain.  This is typically the situation during late fall and winter, I have experienced dry roads on one side and ice on the other, it can be a quick change with worse kind of consequences if not prepared for it.

4. Top North Georgia Motorcycle Routes

Now, let’s dive into the heart of the matter – here are a few of the top motorcycle routes North Georgia offers.  Please keep in mind, in my experience, those who ride this area may have a different name or nuances to the route that may not be described or shown in detail within these route narratives.  The port of origin, where someone starts this ride may have an impact on their route and length of the ride.  The lengths provided within are approximate and are not claimed to be accurate to the mile, close but not guaranteed.

  • Blue Ridge Mountain Loop –We will start this route in Ellijay, Georgia on route 76 N., then turn South on HWY 60 to ride through the beautiful Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests.  Where HWY 60 meets HWY 19, continue south to Dahlonega to connect to HWY 52 (Chatsworth HWY) if you want to return to Ellijay.  HWY 52 also connects with HWY 5 if you want to go south towards Atlanta.  The total length of the ride is approximately 92 miles.   This loop is comprised of what some riders consider a couple of different routes.  This ride will test your endurance and concentration, but it is an absolute blast. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1QkhIS5BQ68gVBXfjnTJ8nHjDDxC1WXY&usp=sharing
  • Chatsworth, GA to Ellijay, GA via Hwy 52.  This is a beautiful ride from Chatsworth, GA to Ellijay, there are a few good areas to stop and take in the mountain views, and fall colors or to talk to other motorcycle riders experiencing the beauty of this ride.  Cohutta Overlook is located near the middle of this route and is a popular stopping point for most motorcyclists.  The views from this roadside turnoff are second to none.  The length of the route is approximately 25 miles.  I enjoy taking this route from both directions it feels like two different rides.  I noticed during my last trip on this route a few potholes at the apex of some of the turns.  The Georgia DOT is typically on top of its game, I would expect these to be repaired soon.   Regardless, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it, head on a swivel and eyes straight ahead.    Ellijay is a great place to stop too.  The town square is a picturesque mountain town with shops and eateries that a lot of riders frequent for their bargains, unique products, and delicious food.

  • There is a route out of Dahlonega, in fact, a lot of nice rides start in or near Dahlonega,  this particular route starts on HWY 19 North to Route 60 to  Suches, then to HWY 180 North to Route 19 South to Porter Springs Dahlonega.   I have attached a map for your reference.  The length of this ride is approximately 90 miles and is packed full of challenging curves, varying elevations, and scenery that is sure to please.   This is an exciting route, one that should thrill even the most experienced riders.  https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1GCcy-hbwf6tgalgujCXiM2xLfKJmJj4&usp=sharing
  • More popular routes will be discussed in future installments.

 5. Safety First: Tips for a Safe Ride

As stated previously, I am a safety-minded person, it is a culture that I appeal to.  I have been in construction for 30-plus years, Safety is very real and with it in mind, can make the longevity of this sport more attainable.  While the thrill of the ride is paramount, safety should never be compromised. Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey:

– Always wear a helmet and protective gear. I personally wear, gloves with knuckle protection, long-sleeved jackets or coats according to the weather with armor inserts for shoulders, back, and elbows.  I also wear protective pants with armor inserts at the hips and knees.  I rode motocross for years with my four boys, safety equipment is a staple in that sport, and so should it be for riding on the road.  I respect everyone’s decision regarding what they want to wear when riding, these are strictly my opinions from what I have experienced in the past.

– Obey traffic rules and speed limits.

– Stay alert and avoid distractions. Head on a swivel and eyes straight ahead.

– Check your motorcycle’s brakes and tires before each ride.  Checking the tire pressure is a must when riding these routes.  The stress the tires experience on some of these rides is only possible by maintaining the tire manufacturer’s suggested air pressure.

– Ride within your skill level and comfort zone.

6. Where to Stay and Eat

North Georgia offers a wide range of accommodations, from cozy cabins to luxury resorts. When it comes to dining, you’ll find delicious Southern cuisine in quaint restaurants. Make sure to try some local specialties. The cabins available for rent in the Blue Ridge Mountains cover the gamut from 600 SF to 7000 SF complete with hot tubes, pools, pool tables, and just about any other amenities you can think of.   Your budget and imagination are the only limitations.

More detailed narratives will be provided in future posts.

7. North Georgia Motorcycle Events

If you want to connect with fellow riders, North Georgia hosts various motorcycle events throughout the year. It’s a great way to share experiences, make new friends, and immerse yourself in the motorcycle culture. Suches is a popular holder of motorcycle events, I also recommend visiting the following site for more motorcycle-related events. GEORGIA Motorcycle Events & Biker Rallies – CycleFish.com

8. Conclusion

In conclusion, North Georgia Motorcycle Routes offer an unmatched riding experience. From challenging curves to awe-inspiring vistas, this region has it all. So, gear up, hit the road, and create memories that will last a lifetime.  As for this site, it is our intention to keep it fresh with updated routes to consider, possible motorcycle events, pictures of the bikes we ride, and hopefully an area for bike and motorcycle accessories classified and an area related to motorcycle gear testing and recommendations.

5 Best Motorcycle Rides in the North Georgia Mountains to Try

Although northern Georgia is beautiful to see at any time of year, the colors burst forth in all their wonder during the spring and fall in Georgia . With dozens of different loops to try, it’s the perfect place to take the motorcycle out for a spin.

Here are some of the best motorcycle rides in North Georgia to explore when a day on the open road is calling.

1. Highway 52

You can take this gorgeous trip from Ellijay to Chatsworth. You can go even further if you want, but this stretch delivers numerous impressive views. The first portion of the highway appeared on maps in 1920, with the final route given a hard surface before 1950.

Cohutta Overlook is a beautiful stopping point about halfway through the ride, allowing you to see the colors of the season with the mountains in the background.

Another stop on the way is the sprawling Fort Mountain State Park. You can spend a day there hiking, exploring the old fort, or enjoying the beach at the lake.

2. Blue Ridge Loop

Starting from Ellijay, take Highway 76 north until you get past Blue Ridge. From there, you’ll turn south on Highway 60 to ride through the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. You’ll get to enjoy vineyards, rivers, beautiful trees, and plenty of attractions.

Highway 60 runs into Highway 19. Keep heading south to Dahlonega to connect to Highway 52 to return to Ellijay.

You’ll drive through Suches on this motorcycle ride. It’s home to the smallest public school in the state, which is where you’ll find the Indian Summer Festival each October. This weekend event includes square dancing, homemade pies, and handmade quilts.

3. The Georgia Mountain Parkway

When you want to see the high country of the North Georgia mountains, SR 515 is an excellent option for those taking their motorcycles out on an adventure.

You’ll drive south out of Ellijay to explore the options on this parkway. It won’t be long until you reach stops like the Panorama Orchards and Farm Market . It’s a family-run business that has sold fruit to the area since the 1920s, including apples and peaches. If you visit in the fall, you can also pick up some fresh vegetables.

As you keep driving south, you can take some time to enjoy the Talking Rock Nature Preserve. It’s a fairly quiet location with mountain bike trails, hiking options, and picnic tables to have a quick lunch. You’ll want to check out the apiary where the bees are kept!

Keep heading south until you reach the I-575 interchange near Nelson, then return to Ellijay to enjoy a meal at one of our fantastic restaurants !

4. Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway

When you want to spend the whole day in the saddle, head east past Highway 19 to explore this beautiful scenic byway. It takes you to the Brasstown Wilderness, over to the High Shoals Creek scenic area, and lets you enjoy all the wonders and waterfalls found on this beautiful loop.

If you get started early, consider hiking the Raven Cliffs trail to explore the wilderness areas near Dodd Creek.

You can also stop in Robertstown or explore Unicoi State Park during this adventure.

5. Ellijay Western Loop

Consider this fantastic motorcycle ride near Ellijay if you want a more casual riding experience. You’ll head south to join Highway 382, leading you around Carters Lake. It’s one of the most scenic lakes in the Blue Ridge Mountains, providing sparkling waters and a rugged shoreline to enjoy.

As you drive west, you’ll run into Highway 136. Keep going, and you’ll cross Reregulation Reservoir before Reaching Old Highway 411. Stop to do some fishing if you want, since there’s plenty of bass in the waters out there. You can cast lines straight from the piers at the day-use areas with the appropriate license.

That’s when you’ll want to head north. You’ll cross the dam, driving on a rural road north until reaching Highway 76, which you’ll take east to return to Ellijay. Plenty of camping, fishing, and boating activities are available at the lake. You can also linger to enjoy the views at the visitor’s center .

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer died at his home in Osprey, Florida, David Spero, Betts' manager of 20 years, confirmed. Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spero said.

"He was surrounded by his whole family and he passed peacefully. They didn't think he was in any pain," Spero said by phone.

Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre — Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans' music, which combined the blues, country, R&B and jazz with '60s rock.

DICKEY BETTS-DECESO

Founded in 1969, the Allmans were a pioneering jam band, trampling the traditional notion of three-minute pop songs by performing lengthy compositions in concert and on record. The band was also notable as a biracial group from the Deep South.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971, and founding member Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle crash a year later. That left Betts and Allman's younger brother Gregg as the band's leaders, but they frequently clashed, and substance abuse caused further dysfunction. The band broke up at least twice before reforming, and has had more than a dozen lineups.

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012. Betts left the group for good in 2000, and also played solo and with his own band Great Southern, which included his son, guitarist Duane Betts.

Forrest Richard Betts was born Dec. 12, 1943, and was raised in the Bradenton, Florida, area, near the highway 41 he sang about in "Ramblin' Man." His family had lived in area since the mid-19th century.

Betts grew up listening to country, bluegrass and Western swing, and played the ukulele and banjo before focusing on the electric guitar because it impressed girls. At 16 he left home for his first road trip, joining the circus to play in a band.

He returned home, and with bassist Oakley joined a group that became the Jacksonville, Florida-based band Second Coming. One night in 1969 Betts and Oakley jammed with Duane Allman, already a successful session musician, and his younger brother, and together they formed the Allman Brothers Band.

The group moved to Macon, Georgia, and released a self-titled debut album in 1969. A year later came the album "Idlewild South," highlighted by Betts' instrumental composition "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which soon became a concert staple.

The 1971 double album "At Fillmore East," now considered among the greatest live albums of the classic rock era, was the Allmans' commercial breakthrough and cemented their performing reputation by showcasing the unique guitar interplay between Allman and Betts. Their styles contrasted, with Allman playing bluesy slide guitar, while Betts' solos and singing tugged the band toward country. When layered in harmony, their playing was especially distinctive.

The group also had two drummers — "Jaimoe" Johanson, who is Black, and Butch Trucks.

Duane Allman died four days after "Fillmore" was certified as a gold record, but the band carried on and crowds continued to grow. The 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" rose to No. 1 on the charts and featured "Ramblin' Man," with Betts singing the lead and bringing twang to the Top 40. The song reached No. 2 on the singles charts and was kept out of the No. 1 spot by "Half Breed" by Cher, who later married Gregg Allman.

The soaring sound of Betts' guitar on "Ramblin' Man" reverberated in neighborhood bars around the country for decades, and the song underscored his knack for melodic hooks. "Ramblin' Man" was the Allmans' only Top Ten hit, but Betts' catchy 7½-minute instrumental composition "Jessica," recorded in 1972, became an FM radio staple.

Betts also wrote or co-wrote some of the band's other best-loved songs, including "Blue Sky" and "Southbound." In later years the group remained a successful touring act with Betts and Warren Haynes on guitar. Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks died in 2017.

After leaving the Allmans for good, Betts continued to play with his own group and lived in the Bradenton area with his wife, Donna.
